Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: In our contemporary globalized world, Eritrean enterprises are challenged with high competition from within and from foreign counterparts. Consequently, only those companies that predict the future and take proactive decisions can win the game. However, none of these organizations have applied formal competitive intelligence practice in a proactive, disciplined, and systematic fashion to defend against threats as well as to exploit opportunities, though informally they do engage in the practice. Some of these informal competitive intelligence practicing companies are relatively 'good performers' and others are 'poor performers'. The level of this competitive intelligence performance is believed to be influenced by organizational culture. This implies that employees who are encouraged and trained to have shared values, beliefs, norms and practices are in a better position to share information and interact with each other with open minds. Here, the free flow of information is the basic ingredient that helps to produce effective competitive intelligence. In an attempt to explore if a statistically significant relationship exists between organizational culture and competitive intelligence performance, a literature study was first carried out to learn from other scholars' work. The literature review was then followed by an empirical study. This empirical part of the study attempted to investigate if Eritrean manufacturers and traders perform informal competitive intelligence practice as well as if there is a positive relationship between the independent and dependent variables. Data was collected through a questionnaire from top level managers. Of the 39 questionnaires distributed, 23 organizations properly completed the questionnaire. Statistical analysis was then computed using the SPSS package to determine the correlations. The relationship between organizational culture and competitive intelligence was determined in two ways: first, it was correlated in terms of the six selected organizational culture dimensions (employee involvement, human resources, organizational focus, communication flow, reward, and trust) and competitive intelligence; and second, in terms of scores of each firm's organizational culture and competitive intelligence. Moreover, the level of the score determined whether these companies performed well or not. In both cases a positive relationship was found between organizational culture and competitive intelligence performance. These results supported the hypothesis that organizational culture does contribute to improved competitive intelligence practice. Furthermore, the finding suggests that Eritrean firms are doing moderately good in their informal competitive intelligence.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: In ons huidige globaliseerde wêreld kry Eritrea se ondernemings te doen met sterk kompetisie van binne en van buite die land. Dus floreer net daardie ondermemings wat die toekoms kan voorspel en pro-aktiewe besluite kan neem. Dit is egter waar dat nie een van hierdie organisasies formele, kompeterende intelligensiepraktyke op 'n pro-aktiewe, gedisiplineerde en sistematiese wyse toegepas het om hulself teen dreigemente te beskerm en om geleenthede uit te buit nie; informeel het hulle wel. Sommige van hierdie maatskappye wat informeel kompeterende intelligensie toepas, is betreklike 'goeie presteerders' en ander is 'swak presteerders'. Daar word geglo dat die prestasievlak van hierdie kompeterende intelligensie beïnvloed word deur organisatoriese kultuur. Die implikasie is dat werknemers wat aangemoedig en opgelei is om aan dieselfde dinge te glo en wat dieselfde waardes, norme en praktyke deel, in 'n beter posisie is om inligting te deel en met 'n ope gemoed met mekaar om te gaan. Die vrye vloei van inligting is die basiese bestanddeel wat help om doeltreffende kompeterende intelligensie te produseer. Met die doel om na te vors of daar 'n statisties sinvolle verhouding bestaan tussen organisatoriese kultuur en kompeterende intelligensie, is daar eers 'n literatuurstudie gedoen om uit ander se werk te leer. Na die literatuuroorsig is daar 'n empiriese studie gedoen. Die empiriese deel van die studie poog om na te vors of die vervaardigers en handelaars informele kompeterende intelligensie toepas en ook of daar 'n positiewe verhouding bestaan tussen die onafhanklike en afhanklike veranderlikes. Data is versamel deur middel van 'n vraelys aan hoëvlak bestuurders. Nege-en-dertig vraelyste is uitgestuur waarvan 23 volledig deur die organisasies ingevul is. Statistiese ontleding is toe gedoen om deur middel van die statistiese pakket SPSS die korrelasies te bepaal. Die verhouding tussen organisatoriese kultuur en kompeterende intelligensie is op twee maniere bepaal: dit is eers gekorreleer in terme van die ses geselekteerde organisatoriese kultuurdimensies (werknemer betrokkenheid, menslike hulpbronne, organisatoriese fokus, kommunikasievloei., beloning en vertroue) en kompeterende intelligensie; en tweedens in terme van tellings van elke maatskappy se organisatoriese kultuur en kompeterende intelligensie. Die vlak van die telling het bepaal of die maatskappy goed presteer het of nie. In albei gevalle is daar gevind dat daar 'n positiewe verhouding bestaan tussen organisatoriese kultuur en prestasie in kompeterende intelligensie. Hierdie bevindinge ondersteun die hipotese dat organisatoriese kultuur wel bydra tot verbeterde intelligensiepraktyke. Verder bewys dit dat ondernemings in Eritrea redelik goed vaar in informele kompeterende intelligensie.

The formation and effective functioning of the Kharkiv scientific-industrial conditioner building complex, formed through the cooperation of two leading sectoral institutions – Kharkiv plant "Conditioner" and All-Union Scientific Research Institute "Conditioner", in the early 1930's – in the beginning of the 1990's, were studied in the paper. Wide historiographical and sources study analysis are done. The importance of science and technology beginnings as a historical background of the industry formation, is proved. Achievements of individual scientists from around the world are generalized. The author periodization of industry development, which consisted of four periods, is grounded. In particular, the first (early 1930 – 1957 year), the second (1957 – 1967 years), the third (1967 – the beginning of the 1990's). The fourth period covered the events after 1991. The feature of engineers training in Kharkiv for conditioner building branch is disclosed. Inconsistency of conditioner building industry state administration, which led to the curtailment of air conditioners production in Kharkiv at the beginning of the 1990's of the XX century, is highlighted. However, despite the serious complications of that time, manufacturing of air conditioners in Kharkiv survived, and the direct heir of the production center of conditioner building industry today is LLC "UkrConditioner".

Full textBehovet av bostäder i Sverige har ständigt ökat under de senaste åren. Denna situation kan dock förändras 2018, eftersom det finns tecken på att ökningen av efterfrågan kommer att nå sin topp. Å andra sidan har användningen av trä som lastbärande konstruktion blivit mer populär i flerfamiljshusbyggnaden. Det konkurrerar med betong- och stålstomme och dess marknadsandel kan till och med nå 50% år 2025. Att lägga kundernas medverkan i husdesignbeslut och en hög anpassningsnivå är slutsatsen att trähusbyggnaden måste fortsätta utveckling mot mass customization (MC). Det finns brist på kunskap om hur MC utvecklas och implementeras när det gäller off-site tillverkningssystem. I denna avhandling görs ett bidrag till tillverkningssystemutveckling i trähusbyggnad genom att föreslå ett nytt tillvägagångssätt för att anpassa tillverkningssystem till de olika kraven av produktionsstrategier, marknaden, produktdesign och tillverkningsprocesser. Den föreslagna konceptuella ramen är en sammansättning av kunskapen från tre empiriska studier och olika metoder som finns i teorier om förändringsbara tillverkningssystem, MC och tillverkningssystemutveckling. Forskningssyftet med det presenterade arbetet är att öka kunskapen om hur utvecklingspotentialen av off-site tillverkningssystem utanför anläggningen kan identifieras i MC-orienterad trähusbyggnad. Fallstudier användes för att samla empiriska data. Datainsamlings- och analysmetoderna som används i de empiriska studierna kan vara användbara när man diskuterar potentiella förbättringar. Men denna information är inte tillräckligt komplett när det gäller att presentera enhelhetsbild av off-site tillverkning, utan en bedömning av marknaden samt kunskap om variationer i produkt- och processer behövs även. Därför presenteras det konceptuella ramverket, inklusive en kravlista samt en stegvis beskrivning av hur utvecklingspotentialen för off-site tillverkningssystem kan identifieras.

Full textO tema principal desta tese é a operacionalização da flexibilidade de manufatura, a partir de duas abordagens: teórica e empírica. A abordagem teórica visa a discussão com base em uma extensa revisão da bibliografia, da flexibilidade de manufatura e a sua operacionalização. No tocante à operacionalização, destaca-se a existência de diversos aspectos considerados indutores, como a tecnologia de processo, métodos de gerenciamento da produção, gerenciamento de recursos humanos, tecnologia de informação, processo de desenvolvimento de produtos e os relacionamentos na cadeia de suprimentos. Dentre esses aspectos, verificou-se a necessidade de aprofundamento na questão que trata dos relacionamentos na cadeia de suprimentos, em especial os relacionamentos produtor- fornecedor. Após o desenvolvimento do referencial teórico sobre os relacionamentos na cadeia de suprimentos, no sentido de apresentar as características gerais e seus efeitos sobre a flexibilidade de manufatura, passou-se a uma análise empírica com o foco no relacionamento produtor- fornecedor. A escolha desse indutor para a condução do estudo empírico deu-se em função da emergência do papel dos fornecedores na definição das estratégias do produtor e da importância das relações entre produtor e fornecedor na criação e desenvolvimento de vantagens competitivas. Além da construção de um referencial teórico - útil para a discussão da operacionalização da flexibilidade de manufatura como fonte de vantagens competitiva e preparação para futuras pesquisas - a tese também atende à demanda por estudos empíricos tão importantes para o avanço das pesquisas sobre o tema. Nesse sentido, buscou- se responder às duas questões de pesquisa: como se caracterizam os relacionamentos produtor-fornecedor quanto aos aspectos de confiança/comprometimento, compartilhamento de informações, desenvolvimento de fornecedores e desenvolvimento conjunto de produtos nas empresas estudadas? E como se dão os impactos dos aspectos de relacionamento produtor-fornecedor sobre a flexibilidade de manufatura e o desempenho da manufatura nas empresas estudadas? O estudo envolveu quatro empresas de manufatura em uma investigação da influência de quatro aspectos de relacionamento produtor-fornecedor - confiança/comprometimento, compartilhamento de informações, desenvolvimento de fornecedores e desenvolvimento conjunto de produtos - sobre três dimensões externas de flexibilidade de manufatura - mix, novos produtos e volume. A análise estendeu-se à observação dos efeitos generalizados dessas relações sobre o desempenho da manufatura dos níveis da flexibilidade de manufatura apresentados pelas empresas estudadas.
The purpose of this dissertation is to study the operationalization of manufacturing flexibility, focusing on aspects of relationships in the supply chain and their impact on manufacturing flexibility. The research involves four manufacturing companies for studying the influence of four aspects of buyer-supplier relationship - trust/commitment, information sharing, supplier development and joint product development - on three external dimensions of manufacturing flexibility - mix, new products and volume. The study also observes the generalized effects of these relationships on manufacturing performance and on the levels of manufacturing flexibility shown by the companies studied. The buyer-supplier relationships are deeply analyzed and their general characteristics and effects on the operationalization of manufacturing flexibility are presented. In addition, the analysis of scope and achievability factors indicated the presence of little explored flexible resources in the companies studied. Finding ways for operationalizing flexibility must be seen as a priority question to obtain competitive advantage in manufacturing systems. This work shows how the relationships between the buyer and supplier can influence several external dimensions of manufacturing flexibility and, consequently, manufacturing performance.

Graphene has shown great promise since its isolation in 2003; demonstrating amazing electrical and mechanical properties that could enable a wide range of cheap, flexible, and biocompatible electronic devices. Many graphene-based devices have already been successfully fabricated and characterized including capacitors, transistors and various sensors. However, the major challenge facing wide-spread adoption of graphene is scaleability. While advances in chemical vapor deposition have enabled the creation of quality graphene at larger scales than mechanical exfoliation, this graphene is still difficult and expensive to transfer and pattern over large areas. This work explores ways of large-scale graphene production and patterning from graphene oxide and polyimide precursors. These precursors can be coated directly on materials and then patterned with a laser, or they can be prepared as inks to be used in 3D printing technologies. Large-area devices including strain sensors, wires and capacitors were fabricated and found to have good electrical characteristics. A 3D printing system was also constructed and used to directly print graphene-based devices.

Over the next few decades, we are going to transition to a new economy where highly complex, customizable products are manufactured on demand by flexible robotic systems. In many fields, this shift has already begun. 3D printers are revolutionizing production of metal parts in the aerospace, automotive, and medical industries. Whole-garment knitting machines allow automated production of complex apparel and shoes. Manufacturing electronics on flexible substrates makes it possible to build a whole new range of products for consumer electronics and medical diagnostics. Collaborative robots, such as Baxter from Rethink Robotics, allow flexible and automated assembly of complex objects. Overall, these new machines enable batch-one manufacturing of products that have unprecedented complexity. In this thesis, I argue that the field of computational design is essential for the next revolution in manufacturing. To build increasingly functional, complex and integrated products, we need to create design tools that allow their users to efficiently explore high-dimensional design spaces by optimizing over a set of performance objectives that can be measured only by expensive computations. In this work discuss how to overcome these challenges by 1) developing data-driven methods for efficient exploration of these large spaces and 2) performance-driven algorithms for automated design optimization based on high-level functional specifications. I showcase how these two concepts are applied by developing new systems for designing robots, drones, and furniture.

Global operations for multinational companies today pose a particularly challenging environment for maintaining fluid knowledge transfer and effective communication methodologies. In a continuous drive for product innovation, process development often takes on lower priority to other initiatives that directly affect the design and delivery of a product. However, existing literature shows that process development and governance are critical to sustainable growth in the global marketplace. Multinational companies must recognize the need to integrate process development in a product centric enterprise to maintain effective information flow and clear communication channels. Cisco faces this challenging in maintaining effective cross-functional communication while growing through acquisition and new product developments. Cisco also faces additional complexity in managing a global network of outsourced manufacturing activities. This research analyzes two case studies in process development within the Manufacturing organization at Cisco. Specifically, these two case studies focus on driving early engagement of manufacturing concerns in the product lifecycle and effective means of facilitating this initiative.

Celestica, a global contract manufacturer specializing in printed circuit board assembly and computer assembly, has recently begun manufacturing equipment for the optical networking equipment (ONE) industry. The expansion to include ONE manufacturing requires the development of new skills in handling optical fiber and components, a new supply chain strategy, and a new approach to manufacturing systems control. Celestica is developing a set of standards for ONE manufacturing that will support the rapid development of the new skills required for this industry. This work outlines the standards and explores the specific issues related to manufacturing with optical fiber, including the mechanical reliability and optical performance of various types of optical fibers. An overview of the telecommunications industry is provided, including an analysis of its supply chain structure. Observations are made on trends in the industry and the ways that these trends have affected Celestica in the past, and could impact Celestica in the future. Finally, Celestica's current approach to manufacturing systems control is evaluated, and suggestions are made for improving systems control and project management when manufacturing for such a rapidly evolving industry.

Along with scaling down in size, novel materials have been introduced into the semiconductor industry to enable continued improvements in performance and cost as predicted by Moore's law. It has become important now more than ever to include an environmental impact evaluation of future technologies, before they are introduced into manufacturing, in order to identify potentially environmentally harmful materials or processes and understand their implications, costs, and mitigation requirements. In this thesis, we introduce a methodology to compare alternative options on the environmental axis, along with the cost and performance axes, in order to create environmentally aware and benign technologies. This methodology also helps to identify potential performance and cost issues in novel technologies by taking a transparent and bottoms-up assessment approach. This methodology is applied to the evaluation of the MIT 3D IC technology in comparison to a standard CMOS 2D IC approach. Both options are compared on all three axes - performance, cost and environmental impact.

The "handle wafer" unit process in the existing 3D IC technology, which is a crucial process for back-to-face integration, is found to have a large environmental impact because of its use of thick metal sacrificial layers and high energy consumption. We explore three different handle wafer options, between-die channel, oxide release layer, and alternative low-temperature permanent bonding. The first two approaches use a chemical handle wafer release mechanism; while the third explores solid liquid inter-diffusion (SLID) bonding using copper-indium at 2000C. Preliminary results for copper-indium bonding indicate that a sub-micron thick multi-layer copper-indium stack, when bonded to a 300 nm thick copper film results in large voids in the bonding interface primarily due to rough as-deposited films. Finally, we conduct an overall assessment of these and other proposed handle wafer technologies. The overall assessment shows that but the oxide release layer approach appears promising; however, each process option has its strength and weaknesses, which need to be understood and pursued accordingly.

Full textIn the category of rapid prototyping systems, we concentrate on stereolithography, which is emerging as one of the most popular rapid prototyping systems. We model stereolithography geometrically and then study the class of objects that admit a construction in this model. For the objects that admit a construction, we find the orientations that allow a construction of the object.
In the category of casting processes, we concentrate on gravity casting and injection molding. We first model the process and its components geometrically. We then characterize and recognize the objects that can be formed using a re-usable two-part cast. Given that a cast of an object can be formed, we determine a suitable location for the pin gate, the point from which liquid is poured or injected into a mold. Finally, we compute an orientation of a mold that ensures a complete fill and minimizes the number of venting holes for molds used in gravity casting processes.

Molecular organic semiconductors and nanometer size particles are two new classes of functional materials allowing fabrication of electronic devices on low-cost and large area substrates. Patterning these electronic materials requires the development of unconventional techniques, and the scientific understanding behind the manufacture processes. We introduce the first-generation Molecular Jet (MoJet) printing technique for vacuum deposition of evaporated thin films and apply it to the fabrication of high-resolution pixelated (800 ppi) molecular organic light emitting devices (OLEDs) based on aluminum tris(8-hydroxyquinoline) (Alq3), and the fabrication of pentacene based organic field effect transistors (OFETs) with narrow channel (15 gm) and asymmetric silver/gold contacts. Patterned printing of both organic and metal films is demonstrated, with the operating properties of MoJet-printed OLEDs and OFETs shown to be comparable with the performance of devices fabricated by conventional evaporative deposition through a metal stencil. This MoJet printing technique is reconfigurable for digital fabrication of arbitrary patterns with multiple material sets and a high print accuracy of better than 5gtm, and scalable to large area substrates.
(cont.) Analogous to the concept of "drop-on-demand" in Inkjet printing technology, MoJet printing is a "flux-on-demand" process and we show it capable of fabricating multi-layer stacked film structures, as needed for engineered organic devices. We present the concept and the applications of the second-generation MoJet printing technique. Using this technique, we demonstrate patterned molecular organic semiconducting thin films directly printed by a three-step local evaporative deposition, in conjunction with using the HP thermal InkJet printing technology. This MoJet printing technique can be applied to pattern solution-processable molecular organic thin films, providing flux-on-demand in an ambient environment. We develop an Inkjet assisted micro-contact printing technique for the patterning of colloidal semiconductor nanoparticles. Active OLEDs incorporated with a uniform thickness layer of colloidal nanoparticles are fabricated by using this Inkjet printing plus stamp transferring technique. The material usage efficiency is largely boosted. To our knowledge, these three novel patterning techniques presented in this study provide for the first time unprecedented capabilities for manufacturing organic and nanostructured electronic devices.

Product Quality, broadly defined as the ability of a company's product to meet specific confonnance requirements as defined by the customer, is the subject of this thesis. Specifically, this thesis will explore how product quality can be improved in the context of Tenneco Automotive's (TA's) manufacturing process. A brief survey of these processes indicate the following: **Quality Gap: Company data suggest internal defect rates as measured by factors such as rework and scrap may be higher than external defect rates as measured by factors such as customer returns and warranty costs. Decreasing internal defect rates could potentially reduce TA' s internal manufacturing cost. ** Benchmark Study: This section reports and summarizes the experiences different Fortune 500 companies have had with Six Sigma. The information was obtained through a series of interviews with people, mostly senior managers, who have had direct experience leading a portion of their company's Six Sigma efforts. ** Six Sigma Models: This section reports the financial and product quality improvement that TA could potentially achieve on both a company-wide and plant level basis through the application of Six Sigma. The two quantitative models that were used to come up with these findings are also shown and explained. These two models, although specifically designed for TA, can be easily broadened to apply to almost any general manufacturing enterprise. ** Six Sigma Integration: This section attempts to identify the major issues and barriers that need to be overcome to successfully implement a Six Sigma program in TA manufacturing.

We investigate the use of unsupervised deep learning to create a general purpose automated fault detection system for manufacturing equipment. Unexpected equipment faults can be costly to manufacturing lines, but data driven fault detection systems often require a high level of application specific expertise to implement and continued human oversight. Collecting large labeled datasets to train such a system can also be challenging due to the sparse nature of faults. To address this, we focus on unsupervised deep learning approaches, and their ability to generalize across applications without changes to the hyper-parameters or architecture. Previous work has demonstrated the efficacy of autoencoders in unsupervised anomaly detection systems. In this work we propose a novel variant of the deep auto-encoding Gaussian mixture model, optimized for time series applications, and test its efficacy in detecting faults across a range of manufacturing equipment. It was tested against fault datasets from three milling machines, two plasma etchers, and one spinning ball bearing. In our tests, the model is able to detect over 80% of faults in all cases without the use of labeled data and without hyperparameter changes between applications. We also find that the model is capable of classifying different failure modes in some of our tests, and explore other ways the system can be used to provide useful diagnostic information. We present preliminary results from a continual learning variant of our fault detection architecture aimed at tackling the problem of system drift.

In the realm of semiconductor manufacturing, detecting anomalies during manufacturing processes is crucial. However, current methods of anomaly detection often rely on simple excursion detection methods, and manual inspection of machine sensor data to determine the cause of a problem. In order to improve semiconductor production line quality, machine learning tools can be developed for more thorough and accurate anomaly detection. Previous work on applying machine learning to anomaly detection focused on building reference cycles, and using clustering and time series forecasting to detect anomalous wafer cycles. We seek to improve upon these techniques and apply them to related domains of semiconductor manufacturing. The main focus is to develop a process for automated anomaly detection by combining the previously used methods of cluster analysis and time series forecasting and prediction. We also explore detecting anomalies across multiple semiconductor manufacturing machines and recipes.
