Cakiroglu, Aylin. "Relationship Between Quality Of Life And Happiness In Turkey." Master's thesis, METU, 2007. http://etd.lib.metu.edu.tr/upload/2/12608392/index.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
This study aimed to reveal the relationship between quality of life and happiness in a comparative manner, to underline the importance of happiness and enable researchers to familiarize themselves with happiness in the sociological context of Turkey. Quality of life and happiness, which are multidimensional and interdisciplinary concepts, were firstly identified by looking at their treatment in different approaches. Then, they were analyzed by relating them to different variables in the European Quality of Life Survey (EQLS) data which allows for making comparisons among European Union countries and Turkey. Our study is limited to four countries, namely Bulgaria, Denmark, Hungary and Turkey that were selected on the basis of two criteria
their average of happiness score and their membership status in the European Union. On the other hand, the independent variables of the study are &ldquo
having&rdquo
(material living conditions), &ldquo
loving&rdquo
(social relations), &ldquo
being&rdquo
(quality of society), &ldquo
time pressure&rdquo
(work-life balance), &ldquo
alienation&rdquo
, &ldquo
environment&rdquo
, internet using, health and socio-demographic variables namely gender, age, region, employment status and educational level. Consequently, improving quality of life resulted in happiness. In other words, the main aim of improving quality of life is to supply, improve and increase happiness.

Escobar-Tello, M. Carolina. "Explorations on the relationship between happiness & sustainable design." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2011. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/8447.

Full text
Abstract:
Through understanding the way in which design can contribute in a holistic way to sustainability, this thesis investigates and proposes the design methods, and characteristics of sustainable products, services or systems capable of contributing to our happiness, hence shaping and promoting society towards sustainable lifestyles. It presents the first indications of the relationship between Happiness and Sustainable Design. The review of a vast array of phenomena (Happiness, Sustainable Lifestyles/Society, Sustainable Product Design, Consumption Behaviour, and the emerging Role of the Designer), shed light on this relationship, as well as making evident the social gap that represents within sustainable design. This led to the development of an Initial Theory to bridge this gap, which then proposed the development of new design theories and tools and also a radical evolution of the design discipline. Preliminary Testing with sustainable design thinkers validated this theory and pointed out other interesting avenues in order to develop and test it further. Subsequently, through an exploratory and iterative approach, with the Initial Theory at the heart of the research, the Design for Happiness workshop framework emerged and took shape. Two pilot studies and a first study facilitated its planning, development and implementation, which ultimately led to a strong Design Process and Tool-Kit. In addition, two Main Studies confirmed its effectiveness and put forward a robust conceptual design outcome; the trials of which demonstrated its success and high potential to contribute to Happiness and Sustainable Lifestyles. Overall, the results and findings of this research demonstrated that material changes can take place without having to do without social networks which feed our happiness. The Design for Happiness workshop framework is a practical proposal that encourages multidisciplinary groups to reinterpret the relationship between objects and users, hence approaching design from a different perspective that results in innovative conceptual designs. Here, the designer becomes a process facilitator who shares design tools, encouraging participation in the construction of collective and integrated design visions and scenarios. Creativity and Sustainability are pivotal pillars of this proposal and its success is anchored in its capacity to deliver a collection of experiences that contribute to happiness through the way in which they require people to live in general. It also challenges the evolution of the Design discipline and its consequential theoretical development. The relationship between Design, Sustainability and Happiness is new territory. This research is the first on the subject of Sustainable Design and Happiness, therefore offering a groundbreaking opportunity for design, designers, and its practical applications.

Måseide, Hanne. "Income and Happiness : Does the relationship vary with age?" Thesis, Umeå universitet, Nationalekonomi, 2021. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:umu:diva-185112.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between income and happiness across three age groups: young (18-30 years), middle (31-64 years), and old (65 or older). Theory suggests that income has a positive effect on an individual’s sense of happiness. The data set in this study contains survey data conducted by European Social Survey on randomly selected Swedish citizens between the years 2010, 2012, 2014, 2016, and 2018. The method used in this analysis is performed using a Generalized Ordered Logit model with happiness as the dependent variable. The result shows, after controlling for sociodemographic variables, that income has a positive significant association with happiness in all three age groups. Those with a higher income were more likely to be very happy compared to those in the lowest income group. The study also finds that, for some income levels, there exists a difference in how happiness is affected by income between the middle and old age group while no significant difference was found between the young and old age group.

Maqubela, Loyiso. "The relationship between friendship quality, masculinity ideology and happiness in men's friendship." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/6851.

Full text
Abstract:
Friendships are voluntary, reciprocal relationships that consist of a number of provisions such as intimacy, companionship and help. These provisions or dimensions help to form, maintain and strengthen these friendships. This study has examined the claim that certain types of friendship are related to happiness, and that men's and women's friendships differ. It did so by comparing men and women in terms of the three aforementioned friendship dimensions as well as happiness. This study further investigated whether or not masculinity ideology functioned as a mediator between the dimensions of friendship and happiness. Male (n=140) and female (n=194) students from the University of Cape Town (UCT) completed the Friendship Qualities Questionnaire, which measured their scores on companionship, intimacy, help, positive affect, negative affect, satisfaction with life, and masculinity ideology. Overall happiness scores were calculated using each participant's standardised scores on measures of positive affect, negative affect and satisfaction with life. T-tests and Mann-Whitney U tests revealed that women scored significantly higher than men on measures of intimacy, help and companionship. Women also scored significantly higher than men on the satisfaction with life measure. Despite this, men and women were not significantly different in terms of their overall happiness scores. Path analysis revealed that masculinity ideology did not function as a mediator between friendship dimensions and happiness for men. However certain path coefficients were found to be significant. For men, the path between intimacy and masculinity ideology was significant as was the path between help and happiness. Additional analyses on women revealed that the paths between companionship and happiness as well as help and happiness were significant. These findings suggest that masculinity ideology does affect the expression of intimacy between men in their friendships. The findings further suggest that help is one of the most important dimensions in friendships as it is significantly related to happiness for both genders.

Abstract:

Neuroticism and partner relationship quality are associated with happines. A Swedish longitudinal project was utilized to examine whether these two aspects together determine happiness. Adolescent neuroticism was measured at age 15 witht he High School Personality Questionnaire (HSPQ). Measurements of neurotic manifestations were adminstered at ages 15-18. Adult neuroticism was measured at age 37 using the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (EPQ-I). Measures of partner relationship quality and happiness were also administered. An adolescent neurotic dimension and partner relationship quality were related to happiness. Overall, neuroticism appears to be a better predictor of happiness with both direct and indirect effects through the influence on partner relationship quality.

Jackson, Adrienne. "Sex and Older Americans: Exploring the Relationship Between Frequency of Sexual Activity and Happiness." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2010. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc30474/.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study is two-fold: (1) to examine the correlation between frequency of sexual activity and general happiness among older Americans and (2) to examine the correlation between frequency of sexual activity and marital happiness among older married Americans. This study employed quantitative data drawn from the 2004-2008 General Social Surveys. Two samples were used. The first sample included all respondents 65 years of age and older with valid responses for the dependent, independent, and control variables. The second sample was a subset of the first and included only the married respondents. Both bivariate cross-tabulations and binary logistic regression analyses were conducted. As expected, the data support a positive association between sexual activity and general happiness in both the total elder sample and the married elder sample (p < 0.05). Also, as expected, the data support a positive association between frequency of sexual activity and marital happiness in the married elder sample (p < 0.05). Even with the introduction of control variables, frequency of sexual activity was found to be a significant predictor of both general and marital happiness (p < 0.05). This study suggests that sexual activity does indeed contribute the happiness and well-being of older Americans.

Afghani, Amani, and Alisha M. Hardman. "An Investigation of the “Happiness Gap” between Married and Cohabiting Couples in the US." Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 2018. https://dc.etsu.edu/secfr-conf/2018/schedule/30.

Full text
Abstract:
Previous research has indicated that married persons report experiencing greater happiness than cohabitating persons (e.g., Stack & Eshleman, 1998). Lee and Ono (2012) conducted a cross-national analysis to compare overall happiness between married and cohabiting couples in different cultural contexts and found the "happiness gap" increased as society became less gender-egalitarian and as the role of religion increased. The current study sought to consider how race and ethnicity might serve as a cultural context within the United States (US) by investigating the differences in relationship satisfaction between married and cohabiting couples by testing two hypotheses. First, it was expected that married couples would have higher relationship satisfaction than cohabitating couples. Secondly, it was expected that the effect of marital status on relationship satisfaction would vary with race/ethnicity. To address these hypotheses, data was taken from the Married and Cohabitating Couples dataset from the National Center for Family & Marriage Research (NCFMR). The data set includes information from 752 married and 323 cohabitating heterosexual couples, from18-64 years of age. Of these individuals, 80.5% were White/Non-Hispanic, 5.0% Black/Non-Hispanic, 4.9% Other/Non-Hispanic, 7.8% Hispanic, and 1.8% 2+Races/Non-Hispanic. A single survey item from the NCFMR study served as the dependent variable in the present study. Participants were asked: "To what extent do you agree with the following statement: Our relationship has changed for the worse”. This item was intended as a measure of relationship satisfaction by determining the relationship between the responses to this item and responses to demographic items about race/ethnicity and marital status. A two way, independent ANOVA analysis found a non-significant main effect of marital status on the respondents’ view of the relationship, F(1, 2070) = .564, p = .453, = 0, a non-significant main effect of race/ethnicity on the respondents view of the relationship, F(4, 2070) = .984, p = .415, = 0 , and a significant interaction between marital status and race/ethnicity, F( 4, 2070) = 2.582. p = .036, = .003. A simple effects analysis was conducted and among White, non-Hispanic respondents, the view of the relationship was more negative among the cohabitating group than among the married group (p < 0.01). However, the view of the relationship was similar for married and cohabitating couples among Black, non-Hispanic (p = .279), Other non-Hispanic (p = .836), Hispanic (p = .533), and 2+Races, non-Hispanic (p = .127). The findings suggest there is no difference between married and cohabitating couple's relationship satisfaction. However, there was a statistically significant difference in relationship satisfaction between married and cohabitating couples in the White, non-Hispanic group but not in the other racial and ethnic groups. The findings of this study should be interpreted with caution as there was a large difference in sample size among the racial and ethnicity groups, decreasing the reliability of the results. Understanding how marital status and race/ethnicity influence relationship satisfaction has important practical implications for relationship education programs such as ensuring that content presented is culturally relevant to diverse groups. Additional limitations and implications will be addressed in the presentation.

Hudson-Reed, Jessica Erin. "The Economics of Happiness: Exploring the Complex Relationship Between Income and Subjective Well-Being." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/29744.

Full text
Abstract:
Over the past decade, economists and policy makers have become increasingly interested in the relationship between income, economic growth and happiness. Drawing on the existing literature and empirical evidence, this research seeks to contribute to a better understanding of the complex relationship between income and subjective well-being. This research uncovers a paradoxical relationship between income and subjective well-being. Specifically, at a point in time, both within and across nations, happiness varies directly with income, but over time, happiness does not increase when a country’s income increases. This paradoxical relationship can be attributed to 'internal’ and 'external’ income comparisons and the effects these comparisons have on material aspirations and satisfaction judgements. As such, this research finds that relative income, in addition to one’s own absolute income, is an important determinant of individual subjective well-being. Moreover, this research provides evidence of a possible causal relationship between income, relative income and subjective well-being. Overall, this research makes a valuable contribution to the literature by bringing together a diverse range of empirical evidence and theoretical arguments to form a holistic and indepth understanding of the complex relationships and processes at work.

Sklair, Nathan. "Happiness, debt & depression Is there a relationship between debt and depression in South Africa?" Master's thesis, Faculty of Commerce, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/31034.

Full text
Abstract:
While poor financial circumstances have been associated with an increased likelihood of depression, the role of personal debt in determining individual mental health is not fully understood. This paper investigates the existence of a causal relationship between individual debt and depression across 5 waves of panel data from the National Income Dynamics Study (NIDS). This paper adds to the existing literature on the relationship between consumer debt and mental health. The paper (i) explores the causal relationship between debt and mental health, (ii) conducts research between debt and mental health in a non-western economy, and (iii) considers the effect of various categories of debt on mental health e.g. mortgage debt, student debt, formal debt and informal debt. By using logistic fixed effects analysis, and exploiting the panel, the analysis controls for unobserved heterogeneity in the causal relationship between debt and depression. The paper finds that (I) Individuals who acquire informal debt in the current period have an increase in the odds of being depressed in both the current and future period. On the other hand, individuals who exhibit evidence of depressive symptoms in the current period have an increase in the odds of acquiring debt in the current period – but past period depressive symptoms do not appear to predict future period informal debt. Therefore, informal debt appears to exhibit characteristics of a bi-directional causal relationship in the current period, with informal debt associated with long term depressive symptoms. (II) Individuals with secure or mortgage debt exhibit a decrease in the odds of being depressed in the future, and (III) There is evidence that an individual who aquires formal debt and already depressed in the current period has a decrease in the odds of exhibiting symptoms of depression in the future period. This means that for unproductive debt categories debt appears to exhibit a negative effect on mental health and thus a decrease in lifetime utility. However, for productive debt categories such as secure debt, there is a positive effect on future mental health which may be argued to be an improvement in lifetime utility.

Abstract:
The Swedish public health authority has a target called equal health where the public health policy will create societal conditions for a good public health. There are different determinants of health which one by one affects the physical- and mental health and consequently the level of happiness. This study aims to investigate if, and how religiosity affects the level of happiness, using microdata from European Social Survey. From previous research on how religious affiliation affects life satisfaction, the variables religious belonging, attending religious services and praying was expected to be significant. To examine whether this hypothesis was true or not, an ordered probit model was used with three different model specifications. The result of the empirical study showed that religious attendance was significant when also controlling for religious belonging and praying. When only controlling for religious belonging, the variable showed a statistically significant relationship with happiness.

Waugh, Geoffrey William. "A study exploring the relationship between employee happiness and financial performance within a South African financial institution." Thesis, Rhodes University, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1012080.

Full text
Abstract:
This research is an investigation of the relationship between employees 'happiness' and the financial performance of a financial services organisation in South Africa. As a component of the financial services industry the banking sector contributes greatly to the economic growth of the country. The South African Banking sector is concentrated and highly competitive. It is vital for banks to maintain competitiveness and ever increasing global competition adds further pressure on organisations to financially perform so as to meet the demands of their shareholders. The literature that has been reviewed and previous research suggest that employee 'happiness' is a vital variable influencing the performance and success of individuals. Organisational performance will be measured in terms of financial performance for the purposes of this research. The concept of financial performance and 'happiness' are discussed and a questionnaire based on the Satisfaction With Life Scale (Diener et al,1985) is used to determine the levels of 'happiness' at selected branches within the institution. The individual branches financial performance is determined via calculating selected ratios, namely cumulative leverage, cost to income ratio and net yield. An analysis of correlation was conducted to establish whether or not a relationship of statistical significance exists between employee 'happiness' and financial performance. It was concluded that there is no relationship of statistical significance between employee 'happiness' and the financial performance of branches within the organisation, it was suggested that other factors exert a much greater influence over financial performance. Some of these factors influencing financial performance are discussed and recommendations for further research are made.

George, Katherine. "The relationship between psychological ownership, work engagement and happiness." Diss., 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/50907.

Full text
Abstract:
As a new generation of employees floods the market, loyalty has been redefined. The days of employees staying in one organisation for their entire career are long gone. Loyalty is now shown by the amount of effort and dedication that is put into the job at that moment in time. With that said, organisations need to find ways to retain employees for as long as possible by ensuring that employees feel ownership towards their jobs, are engaged and happy. In order to achieve this, organisations should shift their focus towards positive organisational behaviour and positive psychology as a preventative approach to retaining employees. The outcome could result in happy, engaged employees who possess psychological ownership towards their jobs. The ideal outcome for organisations is for employees to remain with the organisation for as long as possible. The purpose of this study was twofold; first, it aimed to investigate if there was a positive relationship between psychological ownership, work engagement and happiness and secondly, whether psychological ownership can predict work engagement and consequently the happiness of employees in the organisation. A quantitative, non-experimental, cross-sectional survey design was used on a non-probability purposive sample (N = 365) consisting of professional, white-collar employees in the professional services industry in an audit firm in South Africa. The data for the study were collected by using a questionnaire containing a combination of measuring instruments such as the Satisfaction with Life Scale, Well-being Questionnaire for the measurement of happiness, the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale and the Psychological Ownership Questionnaire. Pearson product-moment correlations and structural equation modelling confirmed significant positive relationships between psychological ownership, work engagement and happiness. It showed that psychological ownership acted as a predictor of work engagement, which had an influence on happiness.

Abstract:
Tese de doutoramento, Medicina Dentária (Dentisteria Conservadora), Universidade de Lisboa, Faculdade de Medicina Dentária, 2016
Dentistry, taking into account its need for concentration, accuracy and manual skills as well as physical and psychological requirements, is one of the most stressful professions and the one with most frequently reported musculoskeletal disorders. Dentists present high levels of stress, which may impair their physical and mental health, their well-being and personal relationships, and the quality of treatments that they provide to patients. Stress is related to the onset of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), which are a major health concern for dentists. Happiness precedes and creates several favorable life outcomes predicting quality of life and longevity, with countless benefits not only on a individual basis, but also for the families and the communities to which people belong. Happy people live healthier and longer lives, both physically and mentally. The main purpose and the novelty of the present study was to assess the relationship between stress, happiness (both fluctuating and authenticdurable) and musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) among dentists. The first part of this study includes the validation of Subjective Fluctuating Happiness Scale (SFHS) and Subjective Authentic-Durable Happiness Scale (SA-DHS) for the Portuguese population. In order to validate SHFS and SA-DHS, two other measures have been applied: Positive and Negative Affect Scale (PANAS) and Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS). The entire questionnaire was applied nationwide simultaneously using both online (n = 1338) and paper/pencil methods (n = 1018), making a total of 2356 respondents. The Portuguese versions of Subjective Fluctuating Happiness Scale and Subjective Authentic-Durable Happiness Scale had high internal consistency in every sample. For the total sample, the Cronbach’s alpha was .90 for SFHS and .93 for SA-DHS; the mean values were: 3.58, and 4.60 respectively for SFHS and SA-DHS. Both scales had adequate convergent validity. Item 15, in the Portuguese version, loaded in Contentment Subscale. Both scales showed high reliability and seemed to be a valid tool for measuring and distinguish between fluctuating (SFHS) and authentic-durable happiness (SA-DHS), for both online and paper/pencil survey methods. To assess the relationship between stress, happiness and musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) among dentists, four measures have been applied: SHFS, SHA-DS, Perceived Stress Scale and a musculoskeletal complaint (MSC) questionnaire, adapted for the present study by the author. Portuguese dentists were surveyed through online method (n = 508). Mean stress level was 22.99 and 17.62 on full and short scales, respectively. The stress was positively correlated with the MSC and the fluctuating happiness, and negatively correlated with authentic-durable happiness. The prevalence of MSC for at least one body region was 88.2% for the last week, and 90.7% for the last year. MSC were positively correlated with fluctuating happiness and negatively with authentic-durable happiness. Subjective happiness scored 3.32 on fluctuating and 4.54 on authenticdurable, in a 1-7 scale. Stress and MSC were high among Portuguese dentists, and higher among female dentists. Fluctuating happiness and MSC were predictors of stress. Portuguese dentists presented high levels of stress and MSC, which were positively correlated with each other, and negatively related to authenticdurable happiness and to physical activity.

The goal of the present study is to analyze in which extent the effect of Toxic and Empowering Leadership on Work Motivation is significantly different between various profiles of Orientation to Happiness. According to the corresponding definitions, empowering leaders support their team, promote autonomy, self-direction and encourage self-management and toxic leaders bully and belittle their subordinates, impacting their enthusiasm, creativity, and autonomy. In other words, while empowering leaders address the autonomy and competence needs satisfaction, toxic leaders undermine competence, autonomy, and relatedness, the three basic needs underlying work motivation according to the Self-Determination Theory, the theoretical framework adopted by us in this study. Starting from the evidence that those leadership types influence, in general, work motivation of followers, this phenomenon will be more accurately described if we consider their orientation to happiness. Four questionnaires (Orientation to Happiness, Multidimensional Work Motivation Scale, Empowering Leadership Questionnaire, and Toxic Leadership Scale) were applied to a sample of 850 Portuguese workers. MANOVA, Cluster analysis and hierarchical multiple regression analysis were performed. Results confirmed that Empowering Leadership is positively related to work motivation, Toxic Leadership is negatively related to work motivation, and those effects are different among orientation to happiness profiles (groups). Implications for future research and limitations of the research are also discussed.

Harland, Leslie A. "The relationship of virtue of happiness in Socrates’ moral theory." Thesis, 1993. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/1750.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the relationship of virtue to happiness in Socrates 'moral theory. The focus of my enquiry is a debate between Gregory Vlastos and Terence Irwin in which Vlastos claims that Socrates holds component view of the relationship of virtue to happiness, and Irwin claims that Socrates holds an instrumentalist view. I begin the thesis with an enquiry into what counts as Socrates’ moral theory. I conclude that, in spite of the seemingly negative function of the elenctic method, Socrates has a positive moral theory which can be found in the early Platonic dialogues. I then present Socrates' major theses. With respect to happiness, Socrates is a eudaemonist — that is, he holds that happiness is the ultimate end of all rational acts. With respect to virtue, Socrates holds the principle of the Sovereignty of Virtue — that is, when considering two alternate courses of action, one virtuous and the other either vicious or less virtuous, it is considerations of virtue and nothing else that should decide one's actions. With respect to the relationship of virtue to happiness, Socrates holds the Sufficiency Thesis — that is, virtue is both necessary and sufficient for happiness. The remainder of the thesis examines and critiques three diver-gent interpretations of the Sufficiency Thesis. First, Socrates could hold that virtue is necessary and sufficient for virtue because virtue is instrumental toward happiness. This is Irwin's position. Second, Socrates could hold that virtue is necessary and sufficient for happiness because virtue is the major component of happiness, and any other components of happiness are components of happiness only if they occur in conjunction with virtue. This is Vlastos' position. Third, Socrates could hold that virtue is necessary and sufficient for happiness because virtue and happiness are one and the same form of living described from the vantage points of different criteria. This is my position. I close the thesis with an evaluation of the Socratic relationship of virtue to happiness from a modern perspective. Although there awesome differences between contemporary conceptions of the relationship of virtue to happiness and that of Socrates, the third interpretation of the Socrates' Sufficiency thesis (outlined in the preceding paragraph) is consistent with modern thought.

In the age of technological advancement, modern people are in a rapidly changing environment. Challenges in the workplace and in life may cause stress accumulation, In our lifetime, Pressure is everywhere and cannot be completely avoided. Because it is impossible to escape, it is necessary to learn how to get along with stress, Improve self-management in a rapidly changing environment to overcome stress. This dramatic reorientation effected by the Lotus Sutra is distilled in the key and seemingly paradoxical concepts of Nichiren Buddhism that “earthly desires are enlightenment” and “the sufferings of birth and death are nirvana.” The image of the pure lotus flower blossoming in the muddy swamp is a metaphor that encapsulates this perspective—freedom, liberation,On the contrary, the pressure will increase exponentially, the mood will also decrease, and finally the happiness will be reduced, and even affect health and life. From the analysis of this study, the correlation between the three indexes of self-management index, stress sense index and happiness index is clearly known. When the self-management index is higher, the stress index will decrease, and the happiness index will also increase, Even with the analysis results obtained by different backgrounds and living habits, Based on the above analysis, it is clear from the study that the continuous learning and growth of life, self-management ability will also increase, and the happiness index can also be improved. Therefore, such relevance can be clearly defined as the happiness equation in the workplace.

Abstract:
Variability in daily relationship satisfaction has been shown to undermine future relationship well-being. The current study suggests that the relationship climate may moderate this effect. Namely, and in light of prior work showing that ignoring relationship issues can be detrimental for long-term relationship well-being, it is argued that when the relationship is characterized by more negative relationship experiences, variability in daily satisfaction may actually represent an adaptive acknowledgement of those experiences. Seventy-eight newly-married couples completed a 10-day daily diary task which assessed the variability of daily marital satisfaction, the positive and negative marital events taking place each day, and the daily coping strategies used to manage negative marital events. Spouses then reported on their global marital happiness as well as the severity of their marital problems every six months over the first two and a half years of marriage. Results revealed that when the marriage was characterized by more negative than positive marital events (i.e., a more negative marital climate), greater variability in daily satisfaction predicted initially lower levels of global marital happiness and more severe marital problems. However, greater variability in a more negative marital climate also was associated with less steep declines in global marital happiness and fewer increases in marital problems over time compared to low variability. Together, these findings suggest that variability in daily relationship satisfaction may temporarily feel unpleasant but over time may allow couples to address important relationship issues.

The economic environment in Taiwan is getting worse and worse, and the working conditions for the medical staffs also become more and more unfriendly. Overtime work, working in dangerous place, working stress and psychological issues make our turnover rate of medical staffs on the top rank in the world. Thus, it’s important for us to investigate how to improve this situation. Early studies indicate job characteristics and job satisfaction may be the crucial factors that influence the turnover willingness. However, seldom studies took job satisfaction as mediator variable to investigate the turnover willingness, so this study wants to investigate these relationships by using job characteristics as the explanatory parameter, job satisfaction as the mediator, and turnover willingness as the dependent parameter. This study take questionnaire method to survey, the samples are medical staffs with nurse certificate and over 20 years old in Kaohsiung medical center. 259 formal questionnaires were recruited, and the valid questionnaires will be analyzed by descriptive data, difference test, and regression. The results show the turnover willingness can be influenced positively by job characteristics and negatively by job satisfaction. We consider this result can be a reference and suggestion for authorities and hospitals to propose management and policy recommendations for nurses.

This study intends to investigate the factors affecting the level of happiness for teenagers, in a range of 15 to 18 years old, in their school life. It also aims to help students improve their quality of life. Sample data were extracted and compiled from 3rd wave students and parent surveys of Taiwan Education Panel Survey (TEPS). The conclusions were: 1.The more pleasant the learning environment of the school and class, the fairer the treatment from the teachers; additionally, the interaction between teachers and students directly affect students' levels of happiness - the better the interaction between teachers and students, the higher the happiness level. 2. The results demonstrated that the level of students’ happiness is positively related to teachers’ teaching styles and their exam analysis. However, students' levels of happiness are negatively correlated to the amount of pressure given on and the homework assigned to students. 3. These findings, taken together, are consistent with the idea that senior high schools and comprehensive high schools, and especially private high schools, have higher chances of advancing to the next grade; furthermore, these particular high schools positively affect students' level of happiness and learning atmosphere, teachers’ fairness towards students, and the interactions between teachers and students.

This study empirically investigates the relationships among emotional management, interpersonal relationship and happiness. Also, the study examines whether the trio of emotional management, interpersonal relationship and happiness will be significantly different between demographic variables. A questionnaire survey was conducted to fulfill this purpose using a sample of 398 effective questionnaires gathered from teachers of junior high schools at Tainan. The analyses of statistics such as independent-samples t test, one-way ANOVA, and Pearson correlation coefficient were used to analyze the data, with the software of PASW Statistics. The main results of this research are as follows. Emotional management and happiness differ from age as well as job tenure. There is significant difference in junior high school teachers’ interpersonal relationship between different job titles. Compared with teachers who are responsible for administrative work, homeroom teachers have lower average scores on interpersonal relationship. Overall, emotional management significantly improves interpersonal relationship and it is partially positively related to happiness, with emotional adjustment as the most influential factor on teachers’ perceived happiness. Moreover, the better interpersonal relationship, the more happiness. Finally, implications and future research suggestions are discussed. This research combines and utilizes data from the third and fifth waves of the World Values Survey (WVS) and the data from Barro and Lee (2010) used by Wail et al. (2011) to calculate the Gini coefficients for education in 146 nations for the 5-year intervals between 1950 and 2010, and a total of 70 nations are analyzed. It can be observed from various literatures that, among studies on education and happiness, as social status, income, and health are all considered, the relationship of education to happiness declines or even becomes insignificant. Therefore, this research explores in societies with different education inequality and different average education levels, the difference in the impact of education on happiness through variables such as social status, income, and health, and examines whether the residual impact education has on happiness is explainable by adding living control variables. Before analysis commences, descriptive statistics are first applied to perform preliminary survey under different conditions on the average values of the variables of people with different education levels, so as to understand the relationships between education level and the variables. Subsequently, ordinary least squares (OLS) are used for regression analysis to add, one at a time and in groups, such variables as social status, income, health, and living control, and individual discussions are provided on whether the impact of education on happiness changes because of education inequality, average education, and both education inequality and average education. Empirical results indicate that both education inequality and average education will affect the impact of education on happiness via different channels, and that in societies with unequal education or low average education levels, education has higher degrees of impact on happiness via social status and income.
