Full textIntimate relationships, including romantic, marital, and sexual relationships, are a fundamental aspect of life and a right for everyone. However, despite their desire to take on social roles such as spouse, lover, or partner, persons with mental illness, such as schizophrenia, are less likely to develop such relationships. According to the International Classification of Functioning, which serves as the theoretical framework for this doctoral work, this situation reflects a significant participation restriction in the area of intimate relationships (World Health Organization, 2001). Although person-centered approaches, such as recovery-oriented and rights-based approaches, fully legitimize professional involvement in this domain, mental health practices remain insufficient or inadequate. Within this context, the INTIMate research program was developed to promote intimate relationships for persons living with mental illness by improving the support they receive. To achieve this goal, four studies were conducted. A systematic literature review was conducted to identify interventions aimed at promoting intimate relationships for persons with serious mental illness. The results revealed a lack of scientifically validated interventions, which may constitute a barrier to evidence-based support. To gain a deeper understanding of the phenomenon of participation restriction and the factors influencing it, a second study aimed to characterize the frequency and impact of barriers and facilitators of intimate relationships. This descriptive and comparative study was conducted among the general population and persons living with schizophrenia. The latter group perceives the impact of personal factors (particularly those related to self-concept), impairments (e.g., cognitive difficulties), and environmental factors (such as stigma) on their intimate relationships. Given that stigma was identified as a major barrier, this doctoral work subsequently focused on studying public stigma and self-stigma. A third study, using a mixed-method approach, identified stereotypes about the intimate relationships of persons living with schizophrenia among the general population, healthcare students, and professionals. It also highlighted potential pathways for reducing this stigma. Finally, a fourth study was conducted at the University of Montreal, in collaboration with patient partners, to develop and validate a scale assessing self-stigma in intimate relationships. In conclusion, this doctoral work presents promising perspectives for enhancing support in intimate relationships for persons living with mental illness. However, further studies are needed to promote evidence-based support that aligns with the preferences for those concerned. In accordance with national and international recommendations, this work advocates for holistic approaches aimed at achieving full social participation, such as recovery-oriented and rights-based approaches (Coldefy, 2022; WHO, 2021)

Full textDrawing on digital ethnography of a male-for-male dating website that combine "ordinary" sex and commercial sex, this thesis aims to grasp transactions between escort boys and their clients. By considering these relations as sexual and intimate as well as social and economic, the investigation shows that escorts and clients grant specific meanings to sexuality, intimacy and the debts that bind them. Thus, the participants value these relationships in two ways. First, they attach to them a moral value that is sometimes higher than the one they attach to non-commercial sex, because of the deep intimacy they manage to create. Then, by engaging in gift/counter-gift transactions - especially when relationships become regular - they redefine (or undefine) the value of their relationships through money. In both processes, the role and the meanings of sexuality are major components to grasp these exchanges. Finally, this valuation of escort-client relationships allows participants to build strong social ties, that is, to develop their transactions according to a relational model of sexuality, not only a recreational model that is more often attached to prostitution. At a time when late capitalism has interfered in our intimate relationships, economic-sexual exchanges between (mostly gay) men are then an interesting field of inquiry to understand how sexuality and intimacy may be granted values and meanings that do not fit into the devalorization of commercial sex

Full textThis research focuses on courtship and representations of love among young adults in Muscat, the capital of the Sultanate of Oman, concerning the social transformations that occurred since the 1970s. Through the observation of different spaces of the city, the thesis presents various types of encounters between young people, in order to analyze how a “geography of distance” is set up. The prohibition of an out-of-wedlock relationship places flirtation in a space-time of secrecy, which the online sphere strengthens. The Internet also participates in the sublimation of the beloved and announces the entry into the “love career”, a status by which the individual recognizes his feelings and builds intimacy and trust with the other. Love is also analyzed as an object of speech and transmission. With the observation of the conditions of marriage, the thesis also analyzes the outlines of the ideal spouse in relation with the national policies of the family and the couple, but also through the discourse of elders and religious and academic institutions. A distinction appears between two categories called “love marriage” of “traditional marriage”. By analyzing the contexts of their evocation, these categories reveal issues of reputation or class belonging. Finally, love is analyzed in its representational and symbolic dimension, through weddings and Valentine's Day celebrations. These “shows of love” highlight the cosmopolitan aspect of the Mascatis youth love experiences

Full textHow to understand Man’s relationship with Nature ? This study, achieved with sensitive surveys, is a qualitative and reflexive anthropology. It uses anthrozoology, palaeoanthropology and ethology, symbolism and imagination. If Man is afraid of Nature, how does he manifest it? Nature without mystique, dominated, controled, “boxed”, polluted, destroyed, re-created in artificial situations, Nature makes us examine Man, his complex fears, paradoxes. And Man’s exploration of Nature in daily life or in extreme circumstances, what is he looking for? Nature is an essential need, for well-being, a means of exploring one’s own senses, a source of renewal, a method of escaping society’s pressures. Man’s inner problems are reflected in Nature. It affords him a resting view of himself. It mirrors the animal side of Man. These relationships are ambivalent: between destructive fear and sympathetic interaction, they have as many aspects, facets and reactions as each individual has. Relationships with wildlife, how are they experienced and why? They offer the possibility of (re)discovering oneself whilst discovering the Other, they offer a richness of understanding faced with the natural unknown which wants to be in contact. Nature offers multifaceted enrichment: for the body, senses, emotions, feelings, self-knowledge, mind and spirituality. Thus, Man may experience an inner transformation

Full textIn Sweden, 17 women are murdered each year by a man they are or recently have been in an intimate relationship with. That means one woman every third week. The circumstances usually resemble. Separation initiated by the woman. The man she is leaving is most often a jealous and controlling type. He has clearly expressed suicidal thoughts, caused by the situation. A larger number of the murdered women did seek help, and in some of the cases authorities has been unsuccessful in identifying the risk situation. Perhaps one could improve the risk assessment done when she is seeking help or reporting vulnerability by finding common factors among the women or in their immediate surrounding? The source of information is court records and criminal investigations. Theoretically, one can look at both criminological and sociological theories. Through qualitative systematic document analysis of this material some findings emerged; the actual size of the woman, her personality and her financial situation. Furthermore, for future research, it reveals various aspects of the protective measures taken to keep the woman safe. Since the basis of the results in this paper rests on relatively few cases, it would be interesting to work with a larger amount of material. This could reveal if the results held their strength or weakened, and if there was more to be found. Intimate partner murder is a significant problem that affects both individuals and society. 17 victims, 17 men incapacitated for a long time and an even larger number of children that without guilt are attributed with a lifetime of suffering including a huge impact on their future health and wellbeing.

Full textBackground: Gender intends to describe the socially constructed part of being a woman, man, girl or boy. It discusses how individuals interact with each other, how we understand femininity and masculinity and what set of norms and values we have. There has not been much room for a gender perspective in healthscience even tough statistics show that there are several differences between women and men not least when it comes to the field of nursing profession and patients experiences of being a patient. Much like cultural sensitivity, a gender perspective could contribute to a more person centered care. Aim: The aim of this literature review is to explore how gender related aspects relevant to the relationsship between nurses and the relationship between nurse and patient is described in healthscience. Methods: A litteraturereview has been done according to the method proposed by Friberg (2012). The result is based on ten scientific studies. The studies has been seperated into themes based on the similarities that were found. Results: Sex, age, how sick/the degree of dependence of the patient, the thoughts about what is masculine and what is feminine and the image of the nurse affected the experience of intimate care and what job assignments that were seen as appropriate for women and men and also how the patient experienced the care that he or she recieved. Discussion: Gender affects the way individuals act towards each other, their expectations on each other and how they value each others work. This affects the relationship between individuals. The result is related to Hildegard E. Peplaus theory about interpersonal relations in nursing.

Full textSince the turn of the 21st century, the funeral rituality in France undergoes a profound transformation that strongly questions the relationship between death and the city. The more frequent practices of cremation and ashes scattering express a rejection of cemeteries standardisation and constraints. The materiality of the ash leads to dematerialisation and more diffuse localisation of the dead. These are reinforced by the increasing use of digital media (memorial pages, social networks, virtual cemeteries) that open a new space-time framework for sustaining the relationship to the dead and participate in redefining the spatiality of grief. In addition, environmental considerations reveal today a new deviation in the field of funerary both in practice and at the level of representation. We assume that weaving our relationship to the dead passes across the body, its movements and gestures that materialise that relationship while creating a special ambiance. Therefore, from this sensory approach dealing with urban ambiances, constructed and landscaped arrangements are perceived as a way for setting the conditions on spatial, temporal and bodily levels, that participate in establishing the relationship to death and the dead, and partly shape the intimate experience of mourning. Thresholds, rhythms and gestures captured in urban spaces are levers for understanding and designing the relationship between death and the city.In this sense, we identify certain intentionalities that are particularly relevant for the experience of mourning (accompany/support, maintain/sustain, reflect/meditate, travel/progress), which are seen in the light of action possibilities related to the built and landscaped environment. This work helps to highlight the different gaps and resources, and to consider renewing the criteria upon which the design processes of spaces related to death on architectural and urban scales is based

Högskolan i Halmstad.

Full textPrevious research has placed incels in relation to violence and radicalization. Relatively little academic attention has been paid to what can be seen as the essence of the community; the lack of intimate relationships. The following study aims to close this gap by exploring how incels view masculinity and intimate relationships, and how this view relates to theoretical perspectives on sexuality and masculinity. This study is based on a qualitative method with a social constructivist approach. Data was collected in the form of a time-based sample where written posts from the three largest international forums for incels were collected on three different occasions. At each occasion all forum posts that were created or updated within a chosen specific hour were included in the sample. The material was processed using an inductive conventional content analysis. The theoretical perspective is based on hegemonic masculinity, and a development of Bourdieu's concept of physical capital. Erotic capital was used as a complementary theoretical concept. The overall results show that people on the incel forums relate to two imagined structures within which intimate relationships are assumed to arise. One structure is based on an imagined masculinity hierarchy where only men with hegemonic status are assumed to be able to initiate intimate relationships with women. The second structure consists of an imagined sexual market where forum members believe that women strive to initiate relationships with attractive and successful men. The people on the incel forums try to develop and establish strategies to achieve a superior position in the masculinity hierarchy and on the sexual market. The purpose of advancing within the hierarchies is based on the notion that only a superior position can enable intimate relationships.

Full textIn 1957, Tempo di Roma brings success to the Belgian novelist Alexis Curvers (Liège 1906-1992). His admirers still today do not understand why this lengthy masterpiece is his swansong. Going through Curvers’ archives has brought to light about 500 publications (1920-1992) in periodicals from Belgium, Luxembourg and France that show his literary, ideological and personal evolution. Tens of thousands of heretofore unpublished letters, sometimes very intimate, were kept among his papers and in several public collections. Reading them leads to more than 200 interesting or illustrious correspondents (such as Marguerite Yourcenar or Grace of Monaco). Their content reveals a multi-faceted Curvers who confides greatly in his poet friends (Paul Dresse, Marcel Thiry, Yves-Gérard Le Dantec, Vincent Muselli). Various samples, including all of his correspondence with his family (particularly the thousands of letters from his famous Hellenist wife, Marie Delcourt) and letters from patrons, translators, painters, actors, journalists, publishers, writers, intellectuals of all colours (Aline Mayrisch, Maurice Beerblock, Herman De Cunsel, Stéphane Audel, Denis Marion, Jacques Peuchmaurd, Henri Calet, Jean Madiran…) give light to his journey and explain the circumstances of the birth and death of his poetry journal, La Flûte enchantée (1952-1962). The links between Curvers and Italy, the painters (Ensor, Chirico, Marie Howet) and André Gide are also detailed here. The presentation and critical editions of two manuscripts, La vérité vous délivrera (written at the Liberation) and Curvers’ diary (1924-1961), along with his bibliography, add to our understanding of this tortured creator

Full textContesting the classical approach of the social denial of death, this work aims to deepen the recent researches focusing on the intimacy of mourning and the socializations caused by a death (Déchaux, Roudaut). This research is based on observation and on 45 semi-structured interviews presenting 31 situations of death, and analyzes the reactions of young people (from 18 to 30 years-old) facing the death of a friend. Coming with the scope of Bastide’s work about a « set » representing the officials rituals, and a « establishing » representing all the other funerary socializations (party being the key figure), the socio-anthropological approach suggested here defines a comprehensive model of links with death from a individual surrounded by multiples groups membership. Individual facing loss is also analysed through anthropological invariants helping to highlight a anthropology of the intimacy of mourning. This work shows the continual effort of the peer group and their members to give meaning to the death of their friend. Opposed to classical rituals and manners, which they judge rigid (i. E. “deformalization” movement described by Elias), young friends prefer the spontaneous, the natural, the hazard and the surprise as modalities to cope with loss. Moreover, the question of intimacy is crucial since inside it, it is possible to find the classical phases of mourning. Finally, the death of a friend reveals to young people their mortality and makes them pass through a test that appears to them to be a true ritual of passage (Van Gennep) toward adulthood

"Kärlek - en helt normal osannolikhet : en sociologisk samhällsteoretisk studie om skillnader mellan det förmoderna och moderna samhällets syn på intim- och familjerelationer." Thesis, Örebro University, Department of Social and Political Sciences, 2006. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:oru:diva-802.

Full textIn social psychology of health, the analysis of psychological and social dimensions involved in health risks construction represents a major both theoretical and pragmatic issue. The current research proposes to articulate the social representations approach (Apostolidis, 2006) and the Terror Management Theory (Solomon, Greenberg, & Pyszczynski, 1991) in order to study the links between an induced state anxiety and the mobilization of symbolic reasoning concerning HIV risk perception. In our four experiments (N = 520, 221 men and 299 women, age mean = 21.1), after death thoughts (versus a neutral theme) were made salient, participants were asked to read a socially normed sexual relationship script (with or without “delay”), and then were asked to evaluate the sentimental valence of the relationship described and the HIV risks associated with it. Results showed that perceived risks depend on the sentimental valence attributed, which itself depends on the “delay” factor. This sociocognitive functioning is also modulated by gender, and by experimental inductions : in general, waiting before having sexual intercourse is more valued by women and by mortality salience condition participants, except when they have religious or spiritual beliefs. Our main results thus support those derived from TMT. These findings are discussed in a social representations perspective, and their practical implications are examined in relation to HIV risk preventive actions

Full textPoly, to live in several loving and intimate relationships at the same time, is one alternative to the mono norm. In Sweden polygamy is illegal yet in recent years poly has slowly started to enter the hetero normative political agenda and raise debate in the media. But what does poly mean, and how do those who identify with this type of relationship describe it in contrast to mono? The theoretical framework is based on a structural viewpoint of the changes in the organisation of the family and the growing de-traditionalism of society. Amongst other I use a Foucauldian perspective to explain the structural shift (yet not replacement) between an Alliance pattern and a Sexuality pattern. Other theories in use are that of the emerging ideal of The Pure Relationship and Queer Tendencies. The essay draws its empirical results from seven e-mail and/or face interviews with individuals who identify with poly. The results show that if poly and mono are both understood as expression of the pure relationship they are potentially not so different. Yet the stigma and the lack of role models show that there is much needed public debate about it to unleash it from old discourses that still seem to uphold the equation that love equals two partners. Drawing attention to queer mechanism and the initiated process of the decentralisation of the heterosexual norm, I speculate that in the future polygamy must not be a foreign concept in Swedish society.

Full textEven though the scientific community has recognized intimate partner violence in same-sex relationships for more than 30 years, this problem has only been socially recognized in recent years. Prevention and intervention practices for this population are still under development. Therefore, studying the process by which male victims of intimate partner violence by a same-sex partner understand their situation as violence could help to inform practices. The few researches on the subject explored this process using samples of heterosexual females, their result might not apply to male victims. Moreover, these models don’t explain how this process is initiated. This research seeks to better understand how French-speaking men victims of an intimate partner violence by a same-sex partner become aware of this violence. This research also seeks to understand the type of violence experienced, and the consequences associated with them. Ten participants took part in a semi-structured interview exploring intimate partner violence. Results of thematic analysis suggest all participants experienced sexual violence, almost all experienced psychological violence and most reported economic and physical violence. The consequences of this violence are diverse and persist over time. Analysis led to a three-phase model of the violence awareness process. First, violent behaviors are understood as a normal part of the relationship. Second, they are perceived as something abnormal and dangerous. Third, they are finally understood as intimate partner violence. In light of these results, implications for prevention, intervention practices as well as research on intimate partner violence in same-sex relationships are discussed.

Full text. Some studies suggested that lifestyle related factors such as physical activity, nutrition and socioeconomic status could influence the cardiovascular risk. An increased carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT) is associated with atherosclerosis risk factors and with an increased risk of coronary heart disease and stroke in adults. cIMT was measured before in children and adolescents with some diseases associated with an increased cardiovascular risk, but the relations between cIMT and the traditional risk factors or related to lifestyle were scarcely studied in adolescents from a general population. Our aim was to study the cIMT predictors in children and/or adolescents.1: We performed a literature systematic review about cIMT measurement in pediatric populations with cardiovascular risk factors. 65 papers (67 cited studies) were reviewed, published from 1986 to 2010, about some case-control studies performed in children and/or adolescents with the following diseases: obesity, diabetes type 1, dyslipidemia, hypertension, chronic renal failure. The analyzed studies included 3692 patients and 2623 controls with mean ages from 6.4 to 17.6 years. The measurement methods varied according to the studies. A significant increased cIMT was observed in 22 studies/26 in obese children compared to controls, 8 studies/14 in diabetic type 1 patients, 10 studies/11 in dyslipidemic patients, 7 studies/8 in hypertensive patients and 8 studies/8 in chronic renal failure patients. The non significant increased cIMT in some studies in diabetic patients was explained by the short median duration of the disease, the young age of the patients or the good metabolic control of the disease. In spite of the heterogeneity of the measurement methods, the cIMT was significantly increased in 55/67 cited studies confirming the early carotid artery damages in pediatric populations with an increased cardiovascular risk.2: Aim: We studied in adolescents from Lille metropolis the relations between cIMT and the anthropometric, biologic and lifestyle factors that may influence the cardiovascular risk. Material and methods: This work is an ancillary study of HELENA-CSS (Healthy Lifestyle in Europe by Nutrition in Adolescence Cross-Sectional Study), which analyzes in a population of European adolescents some data related to health, lifestyle and nutritional status. The sample comprised 319 adolescents (135 boys et 184 girls) aged from 12 to 17.5 years. The cIMT and carotid diameter measurements were performed on both sides, using a 7.5MHz linear probe, with the help of a semi-automatic edges detection soft. Weight, height, waist and hip circumferences, skinfolds, blood pressure were measured, and a blood sample was drawn in 29.8% of the adolescents. BMI, BMI z-score, waist/hip, subscapular + suprailiac skinfolds/ subscapular + suprailiac + bicipital + tricipital skinfolds (TSKF/∑4 skinfolds) were calculated. The pubertal stage was assessed according to the Tanner’s method, the socioeconomic status by the maternal education level and the family affluence scale (FAS 4)

Full textSilence rulesA study of the role visual rehabilitation in Skåne plays to support the ability to flirt and create intimate relationships amongst blind people.by Monica GranbergThe purpose of the study is to shed light upon the rehabilitation situation for blind people within Region Skåne, regarding how compensatory techniques and strategies for responding to and sending flirting signals, and initiating love and/or sexual relationships are practised. Also if, and if so how, rehabilitators construct a particular social type, “the blind”, and the effect this construction has on how these issues are approached is looked upon. The method used to examine these issues is qualitative semi-structured interviews with seven informants from different educational backgrounds but all with direct client contacts. The study shows that some of the informants have worked with the issues, in group activities and/or during courses, but no such skill training is planned nor performed today. Some of the informants do discuss the issues but only if the clients themselves bring them up during individual meetings. There is no single constructed social type, “the blind”; rather the pictures are formed from personal experiences either from client meetings or, when applicable, from being visibly impaired. Several of the informants’ pictures of “the blind” are coloured by many clients being elderly; thus the issues are considered less relevant, and harder to bring up.Keywords: flirt, rehabilitation, relationship, visually impaired

Full textBackground: Domestic violence is a widespread and serious public health issue. Every fourth woman will be subjected to domestic violence at some point in her life. Men's violence against women encompasses all forms of violence in a current or former partnership. The violence can be physical, mental or sexual, often a combination of different forms. Women exposed to violence often seek care due to problems other than the violence to which they are exposed. Nurses are therefore very likely to meet this group of patients as these women seek care to a greater extent than non-exposed women. The nurse has an important responsibility in identifying and screening women for violence in order to enable good and safe care at the earliest possible stage. Aim: The aim is to describe nurses experience of screening women for domestic violence Method: The literature review is based on 10 scientific studies, of which six are qualitative and four are quantitative. Results: The results are based on five developed categories: Lack of time and expectations of increased productivity, Lack of nursing knowledge, Organizational shortcomings jeopardazie the safety of patients, The nurse's experience of raising the violence subject and The nurse’s responsibility in screening. Nurses do not consider themselves to have sufficient knowledge, time or clear guidelines at an organizational level to handle screening of violence to the necessary extent. Conclusion: The results that emerge in this literature review show that nurses who experience uncertainty about violence management need increased education and information regarding domestic violence. Structural difficulties at the organizational level contribute to challenges in the nurse's work as there are not always sufficient conditions and resources. The nurse's own approach and attitude creates obstacles in the care of abused women. With an increased awareness and greater understanding, the nurse can master the limitations that exist in terms of taking responsibility and daring to ask the question of violence.

Full textThe purpose of this study is to discover and describe how inmate men experience that their sexuality and sexual health has been affected by the sentence of imprisonment. I have examined how these men maintain intimate partner relationships. What conditions are there for them to start new relationships and how do they perceive the Prison and Probation Service work with sexual matters? To answer the purpose of this study, I have used a qualitative method. I have interviewed seven individuals, all serving a current prison sentence. This master thesis rests on a theoretical framework that consists of Gagnon and Simon’s script theory and Michel Foucault’s analysis of power, institutions and sexuality. The results indicate difficulties for inmates to maintain a relationship and to start a new relationship. Factors such as long distances to the prison, current terms and restrictions, financial limitations and the length of the prison sentence were cited as main reasons. It emerged that Prison and Probation Service does not actively work on issues that concerns sexuality. Several individuals rather described policies that restrict and control the inmates’ sexuality. Further, the informants described how their current situation, has affected their sexual desire, the perception of their own sexuality and masculinity.
Sadkaoui, Nourchen. "L’expression féminine dans les romans d’Anne Brontë." Thesis, Paris 4, 2012. http://www.theses.fr/2012PA040100.
Full textAnne Brontë makes use of her talents as a novelist in view of exploring the realm of the feminine. This work proposes to study the different manifestations and usages of feminine expression in her novels. To start with, her first novel is to be read as an example of a feminine Bildungsroman describing the journey of formation, of maturity and fulfillment of the heroine who evolves from a passive, silent and shy young woman to a self-confident and eloquent wife, mother, educator and writer. The second chapter explores the metaphor of embedding in relation to the second novel, The Tenant of Wildfell Hall. The chapter examines the different levels of discourse overlapping in the narrative structure in order to illustrate the complex relationships between the sexes in the model of patriarchal society the novel presents. The third and last chapter studies the creative identity attributes of the heroine. Her ingenuity manifests itself in her writings, her paintings, her educational skills and her empathy, not only allowing her to survive and create in a hostile environment but also her close friends to benefit from her personal experience. A review of the studies on the author shows that the theme of feminine expression has not received much critical attention. This thesis, presenting new paths of research, offers a synthetic vision of the question

Full textBased on an analysis of gacaca trials recordings, the thesis aims to reconstruct the mechanisms of the execution of the 1994 genocide of the Rwandan Tutsi at a micro-local level. The narratives of the experiences of the different actors, called together within a totally new judicial scene, where judges themselves are survivors or eye-witnesses to the events, form the core material of this work, which first explores the conditions of the elaboration of the testimonies, and then analyses their content. Rooted in the social and emotional worlds, the gacaca tribunals reveal the intimacy of the massacres, carried out in the heart of the vicinities of hills and neighbourhoods. The confessions of the killers, as well as the other narratives unfolding through the audiences, unveil the diversity and the complexity of the forms of engagement in the violence, making it possible to give an account of the fulgurating efficiency of the 1994 spring massacres. At the same time, the trials render the experiences of survival, at the moment of the event, and in the aftermath. For survivors, « that time» of the genocide (icyo gihe) represents the time of the cruel reversal of the neighbourhood, and sometimes, of their family. For the killers, on the other hand, the time of the massacres belongs to the continuity of the time of the war, off arming work or of cabaret sociability. The narrative of the micro-local history of the killings relies on a critical examination and on a long-term perspective of social actors' accounts, such as they were unfolded during the trials in their original language, kinyarwanda

Full textThe doctoral thesis focuses on the assistance of functional impaired patients passing throug a personal self experience following a severe physical injury. It is based on an ethnographic inquiry, combining observations and interviews that have been conducted in two hospital services of Saint-Etienne’s UH. The first service is the functional rehabilitation recovery service and, for the major part, the other is the physical medecine and rehabilitation service. In presenting the « recapacitation » work of a person experimenting a new « non autonomous » body, the thesis explores relations between the medical professionals and patients, during the care and functional rehabilitation activities, but also the way in which relatives are included, in order to impact the perception of the handicap situation and to build collectively an acceptable life project after the hospital stay. This perspective reveals how to confront strong constraints of personal self experience by sharing words, this last become as a ressource to bring into the interactions and thus to engage the patient in an intrasubjective reappropriation of his body and an intersubjective continuity of his being. An important place is given to the hospitalization of quadriplegic patients, which is an extreme case and apart in the patient’s care in the physical medecine and rehabilitation service. The thesis presents a chronicle of a lived experience of these particular patients and thus shows the specificity of the process taken place in order to structure the experience of non autonomous body and to the one who has become dependent, and included in a collective composed of human actors medical professionals, relatives but also technical objects in which his act is distribued. The narrative takes into consideration the time and the moments experienced by these patients in this collective, during the care which can be counted by months and sometimes by years, by describing the ordinary activities in the rooms, those of the technical installations, those of professional’s meetings, finally and exceptionally a meeting’s structure where a group of former patients come with their spouses and a quadriplegic patient accompanied by his partner, to finalize the project of his return to an ordinary social environment

Full textDuring all his life, the English poet and romantic philosopher Samuel Taylor Coleridge secretly kept his thoughts and reflections in his Notebooks, which have been published in five volumes. This mosaic writing tells the story of a mind fed on an insatiable appetite and curiosity for the natural world and the human mind. Freed from any structural or generic constraint, the Notebooks certainly offered the poet a scriptural space well-suited for the rhythm of his thought. These texts can thus be read as the reflection of a mind constantly evolving, digressing, exploring new areas and opening new vistas. This work is an attempt to seize the variations of the Coleridgian thought by approaching rhythmically the first three volumes of the Notebooks. The writing of his first notebooks is essentially nomadic and asserts the pleasure of wandering through the natural world and delving into its texture. It feeds upon the energy of a body exploring space and of a mind struggling to inhabit the world poetically. Yet, as time passes, the poet’s gaze seems to linger more on the nocturnal sky than on the natural space. The writing of the Notebooks is then no longer the poetic substrate of the early days; it turns inward, loaded with melancholy. The writing of melancholy could therefore be seen as the darker side of the nomadic writing, one that feeds upon the energy of desire and anxiety, that takes a circumvoluted path towards this “dark spot”. Nevertheless, melancholy does not mean the annihilation of the self nor does it call for hollowness. Its source of inspiration resides in the vital force of creation which strives to bring to the light of speech that which can only be glimpsed at in the darkness of the night

Full textThis participatory action-research shows how seven street involved young women (18-23 years) in Quebec have experienced structural violence and how they deployed strategies to overcome. It is based on a definition of structural violence inspired by Farmer, Bourgois Scheper-Hughes et al., (2004) who presents this as the root of social inequality and oppression experienced by several social groups. This process operates in three complementary dimensions: 1) the symbolic domination, 2) institutional violence, and 3) the daily violence. A content analysis has identified the participants experience in each of these dimensions. The analysis of symbolic domination revealed that participants were seen through four prejudices: 1) the bad girl, 2) prejudices against welfare recipients, 3) rape culture and 4) heteronormativity. The violence of everyday life and institutional violence experienced by participants may be connected with symbolic domination. Participants experienced institutional violence during their paths within the child protective system, through their efforts to get a job, housing or financial support from government programs, and during their requests for help from community organizations or establishments of the health and social services. It reveals two patterns of structural violence that mutually reinforce each other in a cycle: Social exclusion and social control. Most of participant’s strategies to overcome social exclusion and to fulfill their needs make them vulnerable to social control. Social control helps increase their financial difficulties and their fear of exclusion. These two patterns of structural violence had created context for sexual victimization and intimate partner violence. While structural violence experiences by participants is at the crossroads of power relationship related to gender, social class, age and sexual orientation, it emerges that male domiiv nance is reflected in participants daily life. The analysis of the intersubjective dimension of Yuval-Davis grid (2006) identifies power relationship within the population of street youth, participants struggle to defining violence and to adopt egalitarian relationships with men. Finally, an analysis of the participatory action-research process experienced in this thesis was conducted from Reason and Bradbury (2001)’s criteria of validity. The development of two photo projects, selected by the group as a strategy against structural violence, helped open a dialogue with various stakeholders involved in structural violence against street-involved young women.

Full textThis thesis aims to analyse the formatting and the representation of the intimate in Hirokazu Kore-eda's Une affaire de famille (2018) and in Naomi Kawase's Naissance et maternité (2006), two Japanese filmmakers creating during a period marked by economic crisis, the adoption of neoliberal politics, and nationalism regaining popularity. From a mainly aesthetic point of view, the goal will be to examine the ways in which these two films represent and imagine two types of intimate relationships mobilized by cinema, which are respectively the relationship between the diegesis' characters and the relationship between filmmaker and spectator. Although their films seem apolitical, as they are centred around human relationships, the question is to observe how an approach focused on the intimate brings to light political and social ramifications.
