Full textThe residential flats with services have the characteristics of gathering small housings (equiped and furnished), of including collective areas (laundry room, TV room, etc. ) and of greeting a type of special household: single household. Their recent appearance shows the break with the way accomodation of people living alone is traditionally considered, and which consists in gathering standard-aged individuals (old people's homes) or people from the same background (students'housings, young workers'hostels). Here, the domestic structure appears as the discriminating criterior and a "transversality" of situations is claimed instead. This research aims at understanding and analysing the effects which the aggregation of inhabitants - close regarding their domestic situations but diverse under other criteriors - infers on the sociability of the neighbourhood (mutual perceptions and relations). It shows that the two main categories of inhabitants (students and non-students) constitue a relational configuration of the type established/unconventionals (reference to Norbert Elias, Logiques de l'exclusion). Non-students are in an unfavorable position in power struggle which brings them into conflict with the students (they are "the unconventionals"). They are stigmatized. Their presence is imposed as weird and illegitimate. It leads us to take interest in the foundations of the status hierarchy, and of the symbolic power of students as well as in the way non-students internalyse, live, interpret and control the stigmatization process

Full textThis Phd thesis is about horticulture, relations to plants, human relations around plants, and conceptions of life and living things in Japan. It presents an ethnographic fieldwork conducted among two groups of cultivators in the Ōsaka metropolitan area (2013-2017): volunteers cultivating a wisteria (Wisteria floribunda) in the Fukushima district of Ōsaka, and professional producers growing plum, peach and cherry in the Higashino neighborhood in Itami. In order to monitor these emblematic plants to “bloom” (sakaseru), the cultivators practice traditional horticultural characterized by a fastidious shaping of each plant, and they skillfully display the flowers. However, upsetting events such as lack of bloom or the outbreak of a plant disease (specifically a plum virus) put into question a technical control of plants that was taken for granted. Cultivators are led to modify their practices, and also the way they of appreciate the plants. These actions and assessments lead to inferences, allowing to question the status of plants, and how they work. There are two main purposes in this research. On the one hand, an ethnography of Japanese horticulture, focusing on a description of local social life and the technical actions observed during fieldwork. On the other hand, drawing on an "anthropology of life" engaged with the concrete manipulations of living beings that are both organisms and artefacts, the aim is to grasp the conceptions of life and living things, may that be a flower festival or part of a phytosanitary plan

Full textThis study aims to understand the meaning given by two goups of individuals, between 20 and 30 years of age, living in Stockholm and in Paris, to their night-time sociability habits with friends. With the hypothesis that interaction which do not situate individuals in formal roles allow the testing of different expressions of social identity, and thus construct themselves progressively, we have studied the gathering of peers at night, in public and private spaces including comsumption of alcohol. Full textThis thesis investigates the role of inhabitants and their garden in the management of ordinary biodiversity, based on three towns located within the Greater Paris. This core issue leads us to explore the inhabitants-gardeners' sensitivity towards the living world, to assess the connection between this sensitivity and gardening techniques and, more fundamentally, to consider the link between this sensitivity towards the living, gardening practices and the biodiversity that exists in domestic gardens. This study is based on a database mainly composed of a questionnaire survey (585), enriched by iconographic material (110 pictures taken by the respondents) and by 59 botanical surveys conducted by ecologists. Thus, we demonstrate that inhabitants develop a multidimensional connection with their garden in which nature, order and aesthetics play a central role. Within these plural connections, we identify as biophilic the respondents who justify their interest for the garden by a specific care for the living. Domestic gardens are thus the support to a particular connection to biodiversity distinguished by gardening techniques more considerate of the living. We implement an Index to gauge the state of the Potential Biodiversity in Gardens (IPBG). This index reveals that gardens, areas undertaken by inhabitants-gardeners, are also areas of biodiversity, furthermore when their owners are considered as biophilic. With the aim of improving biodiversity in private green areas, we propose to overstep the connection to nature advocated in several scientific work and by governmental policies, and to encourage a connection to the living and a new aesthetic of the garden
