Abstract:
This paper proposes a strategic behavior categorization between the contractor and the provider in information technology (IT) outsourcing. We identified four behaviors (or attitudes) focusing specifically on the contractors’ attitudes: (a) conservative, (b) collaborative, (c) opportunistic, and (d) transformational. Theoretical concepts from IT Outsourcing, Relational Governance, and Knowledge Transfer were used to derive the study hypotheses. A questionnaire was developed to collect the information to test the hypotheses. An empirical analysis of a sample of 247 Brazilian companies was used, supporting the grouping of the companies as follows: 38.49% of them had the conservative attitude; 29.14% of them had the collaborative attitude; 14.97% of them had the opportunistic attitude; and 17.40% of them had the transformational attitude. We found that the relational attitudes should be adjusted to the individual contractors’ conditions, specific characteristics, and sectors. Our results also emphasize that the type of outsourced activity (traditional or customized) enables the managers to identify the need to balance the participation in relational governance. This study brings innovations to the understanding of the importance of the relationship between the contractor and the supplier, supporting, for example, the prioritization of new relational profiles according to the level of the IT service that was contracted, whether it is traditional or customized.

Abstract:
Counselor educators and mental health counselors often have a lukewarm attitude toward counseling research and evidence-based practice. This attitude may be because of a perceived mismatch between evidence-based technical procedures and the relational orientation that most counselors value. To warm up mental health counselors' attitudes toward evidence-based research and practice, we propose a relationally oriented research agenda that focuses on integrating evidence-based relationship factors (EBRFs) into counselor training and practice. Eight EBRFs are defined and operationalized, and specific counselor behaviors are described. Reframing and refocusing counseling research on relational variables has the potential to support current counseling practices and inspire development of a counseling-specific research base. Recommendations for a rapprochement between counselor education research and mental health counseling practice are offered, including a list of brief measures that mental health counselors could introduce into their counseling practice.

Abstract:
Studies on evaluative conditioning show that a change in liking can occur whenever stimuli are paired. Such instances of attitude change are known to depend on the type of relation established between stimuli (e.g., “Bob is a friend of Mike” vs. “Bob is an enemy of Mike”). Research has so far only compared assimilative and contrastive relational qualifiers (e.g., friend vs. enemy). For the first time, we compared the effect of nonoppositional qualifiers on attitude change in an evaluative conditioning procedure (e.g., “Bob causes Positive Outcomes” vs. “Bob predicts Positive Outcomes”). Differential effects of nonoppositional relational qualifiers were observed on explicit and implicit evaluations. We discuss the implications of our findings for attitude research, theories of attitude change, and optimizing evaluative conditioning for changing attitudes in applied settings.

Abstract:
Relational sociology rejects substantialism and focuses its attention on the complexity and dynamics of all forms of social life and the subjective nature of action. Relational thinking is an alternative attitude to both functional structuralism and strongly individualistic-oriented theories. Relationality emphasizes the processual and emergent nature of reality. Actions— individual and collective—appear as successive stages of a specific process of events, and result from the configuration of relations and social interactions constituting a particular situation. Different conceptions of identity have been developed within relationally oriented sociology. The aim of the article is to summarize the narrative and realistic approaches, and to present how much they differ in their ontological assumptions. The constructionist concept of narrative identity presented by Margaret R. Somers, and Kenneth J. Gergen’s project of a “relational self,” illustrate the narrative approach. Pierpaolo Donati’s concept of the relational subject and the theory of agency developed by Margaret S. Archer exemplify the position of critical realism.

Abstract:
Aim is to determine the extent to which self-esteem and parental attitude perceptions of adolescents predict depression. This is a quantitative research design and the relational screening model was conducted throughout the study. ‘Depression Scale’, ‘Parental Attitude Scale’ and ‘Self-Esteem Scale’ were utilised in the study. The study was conducted on a total of 526 students of whom 276 were female and 249 were male studying in nine different secondary schools in Istanbul during the 2012–2013 academic period. Product-moment correlation coefficient and Stepwise regression analysis were utilised in analysing the data. According to the Product-moment correlation coefficient analysis, a negative significant relationship was detected between depression and democratic attitude sub-dimension of parental attitudes; and a positive significant relationship was detected between depression and authoritarian attitude and protective or willing attitude. Also, a negative significant relationship was detected between depression and self-esteem. Stepwise regression analysis indicated that democratic attitude and self-esteem variables were significant in explaining depression. Abstract:
Contemporary relational psychoanalytic theory provides new opportunities in the dialogue between psychology and religion. This article suggests three examples. First, by seeing the self as inherently interrelated and by underscoring the importance of experience, relational psychoanalysis creates the possibility of a more open attitude toward religious experience. Second, a relational understanding of human nature potentially contains new resources for theological reflection. Third, this shift leads psychoanalysis to focus on how religious forms embody various relational themes. The article concludes by presenting a case which illustrates a contemporary relational approach to religious material.

Abstract:
Biology course can be difficult for students at times as it includes a lot of concepts and a relatively intense content. At this point, students’ attitude towards biology and biology course is highly important because having developed a positive attitude would significantly affect behavior. In other words, those students who have developed a positive attitude towards biology and biology course are expected to be more interested in class, more enthusiastic for learning, and as a result more successful. In this research, the gender and grade level variables as well as the pet-keeping variable were examined. The effects of these variables on the attitudes of secondary school students towards biology and biology course were examined by MANOVA. The sample of the research, which was designed in a relational survey model, consisted of 1047 secondary school students. In the collection of data, “Secondary School Students’ Attitude towards Biology and Biology Course Scale” was used. It was concluded that students who keep a pet have a more affirmative attitude. It was determined that female students have a more affirmative attitude compared to male students and 9th graders have a more affirmative attitude compared to students in other grade levels. Finally, it has been discussed why female students', pet keeping students' and lower grade students' attitudes towards biology and biology course are more affirmative, and suggestions for increasing students' attitudes have been developed. Keywords: attitude towards biology, biology course, secondary school students, pet-keeping behavior.

Abstract:
Even though the adopted teaching-learning approaches and the curricula that are based on them are subject to change in an educational institution, teaching competencies and attitudes determine the basic quality of the educational system. The study mainly intends to determine the relationship between levels of teacher candidates' attitude to teaching and levels of their teaching-learning competencies. This study has a survey design as it identifies teacher candidates' attitudes toward the profession and teaching-learning process competencies, and a relational survey design as it explores whether attitudes toward the profession and teaching-learning competencies correlate or not. As the study aims to make a comparison between social sciences and science-math fields, the data was collected from 387 teacher candidates, whose subject fields can be grouped within these two areas. The data was collected through "Attitude to Teaching Profession Scale" and "Teaching Learning Process Competencies Scale". The results revealed that teacher candidates have a positive attitude towards the teaching profession and teaching competencies at high levels. In addition, it was found that teacher candidates' positive attitude correlates significantly with their teaching-learning competencies.

Abstract:
The Five Minute Speech sample is a cost effective, efficient means of data collection in developmental research, but recent criticism of traditional coding methods associated with the methodology has spurred the creation of more developmentally appropriate coding systems. The purpose of this study is to examine the reliability and validity of a new coding system, The Family Affective Attitudes Rating Scale (FAARS), for use in children with chronic illness. Results did not support the use of this coding system, at least in its current form, in a pediatric asthma population. Discussion focuses on whether the FAARS may be of use when examined on an item level and directions for future research - such as profile analyses and edits to the coding system - that may better capture the experiences of parenting a child with chronic illness.

Abstract:
This study examines students’ attitude towards and understand of history as a school subject. The study is particularly interested in how the teachers’ role affects the student’s attitude. The results of this study may help to shed some light on the relationship between attitudes towards the subject and the opinion of the teacher. The study is based on qualitative interview method where twelve (12) students have been interviewed through a semi-structured interview with help of an interview guide. The students are from preparatory and vocational programs from different upper secondary schools (gymnasium) in a medium-sized municipality in Sweden. The results show that most of the students have a positive view of history as a subject, with no distinctive differences between the programs. A common idea teacher have is that students from an occupational preparing program show less motivation and engagement towards a theoretical subject as history, this study proves that idea wrong. Moreover, the results show that teachers hold a significant impact on the students’ attitude towards the subject. The relationship between the teacher and the students is critical for the motivation and commitment from the students. According to this study’s results, the teacher must have a commitment towards the profession as well as the students. It is evident if the students feel a commitment from the teacher, their own motivation is empowered.

Abstract:
The success of relationship marketing depends on individual preferences, knowing that clients are not all equally receptive to relational approaches. It appears necessary for this purpose to improve knowledge about client’s expected relational benefits. Within a sequential mixed design, non-directive interviews conducted with wealth management clients, then with retail bank clients, show and confirm the existence of three distinct types of relational profiles : transactional, psychological relational and socio-valuable relational. A matrix combining the money attitude and the banker stereotype reveals desirable vs undesirable hybrid profiles. The quantitative study creates a scale to measure the banker stereotype, enriches the money attitude scale with the taboo dimension, and produces a scale for the expected relational benefits. The test of hypotheses in a structural equations model shows the role of the banker stereotype, the money attitude, the cultural values and critical incidents, in the formation of expected relational benefits

Hanan, Audrey. "L'influence de la transgression des normes de distribution de l'enseigne sur son image de marque et sa relation avec le consommateur : le cas des produits alimentaires dits "moches"." Thesis, Aix-Marseille, 2018. http://www.theses.fr/2018AIXM0607.

Full text
Abstract:
This research has based itself on the relationship between the consumer and the brand to demonstrate the consequences of an act of transgression done by the brand. Such breaches constitute ruptures with customs so widespread that they escape the consumer’s attention, while simultaneously remaining predominant and visible enough to impregnate its consumption experience and ultimately its expectations. This theoretical approach is highlighted by a real case of a breach of distribution norms: the recent offer of “ugly” products by supermarkets, which constitutes a breach to the usual norm of standardised products. This transgression occurred subsequently after the controversy over food waste. The research model presented herein is based on a review of literature, in addition to two qualitative exploratory studies. A longitudinal study examining regular customers of E.Leclerc supermarkets, which was conducted on the same respondents during two different sessions, is used to measure and validate our research hypothesis. The results exhibit the evolution of the consumer’s behavior following the introduction of the transgressive offer and confirm the deterioration of the brand image and the engagement process. If the transgression can be destructive, it can also create value through its innovative nature, its ability to attract consumers and its power of differentiation

Abstract:
This work seeks to assess the effectiveness of Relational Psychomotricity in clinical environment in children with Attention- Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder using the following rating scale: Behavior Assessment System for Children-BASC Reynolds, R. & Kamphaus, W. (1992). The sample was set up by thirteen children aged between 6 and 10 years; seven boys and six girls, average age of 8 years. This intervention took place in Clínica da Encarnação - Department of Child Psychiatry of Lisbon Central Hospital. Symptomatic behavior assessment was performed before and after the psychomotor intervention. This intervention ran over a period corresponding to one school year, about 7 months. After the intervention of Psychomotricity we found clinically significant improvements in the following items assessed by BASC: Hyperactivity, Aggressiveness, Disturbing behavior (atypical behavior), Depression, Somatization and Attention Problems. As regards items Anxiety, Isolation, Adaptability, Social Skills and Leadership, there was also an improvement although without significant differences from the statistical point of view. These data can indicate that the intervention time was insufficient to achieve a more effective reduction of the symptoms that characterize the child with ADHD in this therapeutic process. This Intervention must be guided directly to the child, and also systematic follow-up to the family and the school. The evaluation instrument BASC, has a major reorientation therapeutic value. Allows us after the knowledge of these data to guide therapy to situations such as basic confidence to improve anxiety, give more emphasis to group dynamics to try to combat the Isolation, promote situations that gradually lead the child to respect the rules, objects and the other to promote a greater adaptability, as well as promote playing situations that lead to better social skills.

This dissertation consists of five articles concerned with different aspects of consumer-brand relationships. Article 1 looks at what makes consumers consider a brand in the first place, the precondition for a brand to establish a relationship with a consumer. Article 2 deals with sustaining consumer-relationships and the role of satisfaction in retaining customers. Article 3 looks at whether consumers stay with the brand in the case of a relationship problem, actively work to sustain the relationship or silently let it deteriorate. It shows that relationship norms constitute an important factor in how consumers react to such negative incidents in a relationship. Article 4 investigates the effect of negative brand information on consumers’ attitudes and article 5 develops communication strategies for companies to employ when negative brand incidents occur.

Abstract:
AbstractAmidst the many problem that our societies are facing today, there is acknowledgment of the fact that the current economic system is unable to create and foster a just and stable society. This becomes increasingly true the more we continue to rely on the paradigm of the Homo economicus, which reveals itself as a fragile basis for a just and functioning society. The paradigm of the Homo economicus does not allow us to build a workable society; but then, the first question remains, what is the fundamental feature of the Homo, what does it mean to be human? And how can we build a just and functioning society? The theme of this work focuses on finding an answer through the paradigm of the Homo amans, that is, a paradigm in which we take into account not only human self-interest but also of those other features that are strongly linked with human life: the need for a meaning in our life, our relationship with our future and our relationship with other human beings. However, to change an anthropological paradigm, there is a necessary step that has to be addressed. To say that the paradigm of Homo economicus has been the dominant one so far, means that we have had a society that was imbued within a specific framework of customs, values, and traditions. Our society has been developed on a set of assumptions about human behavior, and on these assumptions have been developed institutions and procedures in which we trust. The attitude of trust is the main topic of this essay. To develop a society on the paradigm of Homo amans and to further develop the debate, one should ask what kind of expectation we should encourage in people, and what should the foundations for such expectations be. What, then, is the foundation of this sensible assurance? Why do we trust people and institutions? This chapter aims to analyze this fundamental requirement for the development of any kind of society: the need for trust between persons and communities.

AbstractIn this chapter, the authors analyze the artifacts in which the students explore the key attitudes of cultural literacy within the CLLP: Tolerance, empathy, and inclusion. The chapter introduces each attitude with critical discussion of its meanings, connections, and relations to other key concepts of cultural literacy, such as diversity, equality, and democracy. The authors explore how the program addresses these attitudes and the cultural texts it includes. The analysis of the artifacts reveals the variety of ways in which children give meanings to tolerance, empathy, and inclusion, such as helping others. In this meaning-making process, the students draw from their own experiences and emotions.

Abstract:
The Erasmus international mobility programme represent a significant step in a student’s development. In the past decades, millions of European students gained experience and lifelong learning period from prestigious universities abroad. Erasmus students are seen as independent people, curious about cultures and languages, open to new ideas and especially predisposed to become entrepreneurs. This study was designed to identify the entrepreneurial attitude of Erasmus students in order to ascertain the contribution of international mobility. For this purpose, the expectations of international students who benefited from the Erasmus Plus Programme were compared to the level of satisfaction after completing the international mobility programme at Institute of Business Administration (IAE), University of Sophia Antipolis, Nice. Factors that most influenced students’ departure in Erasmus mobility are academic and professional opportunities abroad. The data for this study was collected using a questionnaire and sent in collaboration with International Relations Office of IAE Nice. The results indicate that international mobility had a high impact on student’s self-confidence and relational skills. Regarding professional and social life, the entrepreneurial attitude was increased by the Erasmus experience.

Abstract:
The paper presents an analysis of consumer attitudes regarding private pre-university education services and provides a view of consumer behavior with the use of the three components of attitude: affective component, cognitive component and conative component. The objective of this analysis was to study and identify visible and less visible attitudes regarding the use of private education services. Attitude is one of the essential variables of behavior that can influence the buyer’s decision when they want to purchase a product or a service. The qualitative research that has been conducted in order to investigate the subject regarding attitude has revealed that attitude is closely linked to financial elements, distribution, placement, advertising or social pressure. Children’s education is a very important subject for both parents and future parents and thus a series of particularities can be extracted from the relations that form between attitude and perception, attitude and learning, attitude and motivation and attitude and effective behavior. Attitude represents a state of mental promptitude, organized through experience, that exercises a dynamic influence on the response of the individual. Attitude can have a positive direction or a negative direction; it can have low or high intensity and can be of many types.

Abstract:
The students’ attitude towards teaching is important in order to arouse interest and motivation for the lessons. In addition to the teacher, who plays the most important role, the environment in which instruction takes place can also influence student interest and motivation. Considering the peculiarities of technology and computer science teaching, the equipment of the classroom where the teaching takes place could have an influence. Therefore, the relationship between students’ perceptions of workshop/classroom facilities and their attitudes toward teaching technology and computer science was investigated here. The research was conducted in the form of a survey among a sample of 5th-8th grade students (N = 2155) from primary schools in Croatia. The results show a positive correlation between the students’ perception of the equipment and the statements that technical culture is important for life, that there should be more teaching in technical culture, that they like hands-on activities, and that they like working with technology. A weak correlation was found between the equipment and the need for more informatics and attitudes towards a career in this area. Therefore, it can be concluded that equipment is important for making students aware of the importance of this teaching, but it is not a decisive predictor of student attitudes.

Abstract:
The past decade has witnessed rapid advancement in the field of technologically-supported learning environments, as well as a trend of applying technologies in formal education. Accordingly, the introduction of various forms of e-learning is becoming a reality at many universities. The development of online education offers a wide range of different teaching and learning alternatives that move the process of education beyond the traditional classroom. Instead of traditional vis-a-vis instruction, students can hear lectures online, i.e. through information technologies. This research aimed to examine students? attitudes regarding the impact of online teaching on academic achievement. The research included 204 students whose attitudes were analysed in relation to their sex, year of study, year of birth, study programme and average grade during their studies. In order to examine students? attitudes, the research resorted to the five-point Likert assessment scale. Research results showed that respondents believe that online teaching had a positive impact on their academic achievement. However, when it comes to the comparison between the quality of online learning and traditional classroom instruction, research data show that students still lack a clearly defined attitude. Students point out the development of their digital competencies as a positive effect of online teaching during the Covid19 pandemic, as well as more effective management of time and activities during the day. When it comes to independent variables, the research established that sex, year of study, study programme and average grade do not have a statistically significant impact on students? attitudes towards academic achievements as a result of online teaching.

Abstract:
Around the globe, ICT is making major differences in the teaching-learning approaches and assessment. In line with this, Bangladesh implements ICT in education through its Access to Information (a2i) Programme, and puts emphasis on skilling people by using ICT for supporting SDGs by its ministries and associated agencies. In response to this, Bangladesh Open University in association with the Commonwealth Educational Media Centre for Asia (CEMCA/ COL) implements the project entitled ‘Impacting Education and Open Schooling through OER- Making a Difference among the Learners’. This research paper forms part of an action research under this project, and focuses on identifying the policy gaps and tutors’ attitudes towards ICT-enabled vocational education and training (VET) for skilling the disadvantaged learners. Desktop approach on open source materials was deployed for identifying the policy gap, and survey approach was used to collect 180 tutors’ attitude to ICT-enabled VET. Analysis of literature and reports indicate that Bangladesh possesses significant advantage due to the availability of ICT infrastructure for implementing ICT-enabled VET. The results also showed that tutors had a positive attitude towards the use of ICT in vocational education, and it’s use to help tutors be more effective in VET tutorials and in improving student learning. The results have been further interpreted in relation to the existing national and institutional policies and practices.

Abstract:
This paper discusses the religious dimension of the public debate concerning the public health measures adopted by the Romanian authorities during the pandemic and focuses on the role played by the Romanian Orthodox Church within this context. It delineates the different camps that were formed within the Church in this regard and traces their evolution throughout the pandemic. It contextualizes the position of the Church in order to better understand it, placing it within the broader context of the Romanian society during the pandemic and integrating it within the longer history of post-communist relations between the Romanian Orthodox Church, the Romanian state and the Romanian civil society. It analyses the political impact of the public health measures and the role of the Church in shaping this impact. Finally, starting from the Romanian experience of the pandemic and from the ideological, theological and political disputes that it has generated within the Romanian public sphere, it develops some general conclusions regarding the relation between faith, science and politics whose relevance, if proven valid, surpasses the Romanian context and thus contributes to a more ecumenical discussion regarding the theological, pastoral and political lessons that can be learned from an otherwise tragic experience.

UK, Ipsos. Survey of public attitudes towards precision breeding. Food Standards Agency, October 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.46756/sci.fsa.ouv127.

Full text
Abstract:
The Genetic Technology (Precision Breeding) Bill is currently going through Parliament. Although this bill is ‘England only’ and food and feed safety and hygiene is a devolved issue, the Food Standards Agency (FSA) will introduce a separate regulatory framework for precision bred organisms (PBOs), should the Bill become law. The FSA will also work with stakeholders in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland to ensure consumers’ interests are protected in relation to PBOs. The FSA / Food Standard Scotland (FSS) is science and evidence led. In August 2022, the FSA and FSS commissioned Ipsos UK to conduct a two-phase social research project on precision breeding. Phase One, now complete, involved a survey of 4,177 UK residents with robust samples in each UK nation to allow comparisons between and within nations. Phase Two, scheduled to start in September 2022 and report in early 2023, will comprise a series of Citizens’ Forums in England, Wales and Northern Ireland(footnote 1). The overall aims of this project are to: explore consumer attitudes towards precision breeding gather consumer views on the FSA’s proposed regulatory framework understand consumer information needs inform how to communicate with consumers about precision breeding. This document presents interim findings for this project, reporting descriptive data from Phase One. Phase One’s core aims were to provide a snapshot of consumers’ awareness and self-assessed knowledge of precision breeding, its perceived acceptability, risks and benefits, and consumer appetite for information about this production method. These data show that awareness of precision breeding is very low, something which should be borne in mind when considering these findings. While these data reveal that there is a general openness to trying precision bred foods across the UK, with more people anticipating benefits than disbenefits from the use of precision breeding, there is a large degree of uncertainty about what impact precision bred foods may have on the different parts of the food system. This is reflected in the relatively large proportions of people taking a neutral stance or indicating they do not know enough to answer survey questions and in the strong appetite expressed for information about precision breeding to be provided. The next phase of this project will be essential for the FSA’s ability to interpret these findings’ implications, and to understand what is informing consumers’ views. The purpose of Phase One has always been to let the FSA know ‘what’ consumers think about precision breeding; Phase Two’s purpose is to build our understanding ‘why’ they think it. This will allow the FSA to develop a more nuanced understanding of consumers’ needs and incorporate this into the design of the future regulatory framework and any engagement with consumers on precision breeding. FSS will be carrying out further research in Scotland.

Full text
Abstract:
The border area of Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso is a site of endemic violence. The area is punctuated by anti-state attacks, the targeted killing of traditional chiefs, and attacks on markets and other socioeconomic convening locales that otherwise serve as central mechanisms for the preservation of normalized intercommunal interactions. In addition, foreign military interventions and asymmetric insurgent warfare pit multiple state and non-state actors equipped with heavy weaponry against one another, adding another level of insecurity and threat to local communities. Community-based armed groups (CBAGs) of Fulani and Tuareg ethnicity have aligned themselves with outside actors carrying out operations in the region out of choice, coercion, or in some cases both. Building on other research reports in RESOLVE’s Community-Based Armed Groups Series, this report explores local perceptions regarding the nature and impact of the violence in southwestern Niger. The report provides a summary of understanding of ongoing conflict dynamics from the most impacted communities and an insight on the knowledge and attitudes around actors participating in the violence. It hopes to inform efforts to bring an end to the violence and increase understanding of participating actors.

Full text
Abstract:
One of the consequences of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is the imposition of western economic sanctions on the country and further autocratization of its political system. Both factors have resulted in a significant outward migration of Russian citizens, with Central Asia being one of frequent destinations due to the geographic proximity and widespread use of Russian language. At the same time, for many Russians the region remains a terra incognita, perceived primarily through the presence of the Central Asian labour migrants. In this blog piece, ECMI Researcher Aziz Berdiqulov examines this recent phenomenon by discussing specifically the cases of Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan as receiving countries, through the prism of different initiatives addressing the influx, social attitudes concerning the newcomers and reactions of the Russian minorities present there. Furthermore, the author tries to assess whether the new situation has the potential for changing the hitherto pattern of relations between Russians and Central Asians.

Abstract:
This research report applies the Attitudes-Behaviors Corrective (ABC) Model of Violent Extremism to map personal journeys in and out of al-Shabaab, the al-Qaeda affiliate operating in Somalia and the wider Horn of Africa. The ABC Model provides a framework through which to analyze individual trajectories in relation to sympathy for and actual involvement in violent extremism. The study was designed to deliver key insights for policy and practice by revealing the extent to which these journeys vary between respondents. The ABC Model was also designed as a platform through which to explore drivers of attitudinal and behavioral change, offering a granular understanding of the processes of joining and leaving the group. This report features the findings from interviews with thirteen ex-members of the group, including those from its intelligence agency (the Amniyat), military wing (the Jabhat), and police force (the Hizbah), as well as drivers, teachers, and others in support roles. These findings provide important considerations for the design of interventions to prevent further involvement and to facilitate disengagements from the group, including recommendations for communications campaigns, rehabilitation services, and the relevance of territorial control.

Full text
Abstract:
Extant research has indicated that women are under-represented in business ownership in the Caribbean, and when they do establish businesses, that they underperform relative to men in business ownership. Drawing on a tracer survey (2015 to 2018) and in-depth interviews with women entrepreneurs from across the Caribbean, the research sought to identify the constraints to enterprise development and their underlying causes. Utilising a conceptual framework of enterprise marginalisation, which itself draws on a theory of social exclusion, the results indicate that, while growth influences the ordering and prevalence of certain constraints to enterprise development, that marginalisation is still experienced by women entrepreneurs. While the absence of some support mechanisms for enterprise development contribute to the difficulties faced by these women entrepreneurs, the societal attitudes as to what is considered accepted in relation to sectors of operation and the perceptions of gatekeepers in financial institutions are the two main underlying constraints to the development of women-owned businesses amongst the sample. The research provides some recommendations to specifically address financial inclusion and the availability of business support services and networks. However, the issue of gender discrimination remains a longer-term societal issue to address.
