Abstract:
This chapter starts with Harry Frankfurt’s pioneering account of bullshit, and goes on to consider Gerald A. Cohen’s criticism of Frankfurt and his alternative view. The chapter maintains, contrary to Cohen, that we should not give up seeing bullshit as a single and unified phenomenon. The thesis it goes on to defend is that bullshitting and its product bullshit are to be characterized by a certain state of mind of the producer, a state of mind that is to be identified by its relation to assertion. But it is not the state of mind Frankfurt suggested (the state of being unconcerned with truth), for which Cohen has provided counterexamples. The state of mind that produces bullshit, it is argued, is the state of not being concerned, as we should be, with knowledge. And that, in its turn, throws an interesting light on what assertion is, and which norm governs it.

Abstract:
This chapter offers an account of mechanistic production, which is contrasted with Salmon and Dowe’s theory of physical production. It provides a new analysis of the nature of events, and an account of how those events can form productive causal chains. This account identifies three distinct kinds of production: constitutive, precipitating, and chained. The chapter shows how the New Mechanist account addresses a number of standard problems for theories of causation, and for mechanistic theories in particular. These include how mechanistic production could be grounded in fundamental physics, how productive theories can explain causation by omission, prevention, and disconnection, how to explain causal relevance without appeal to counterfactuals, and how to understand the relation between production and constitution in inter-level causal claims. The chapter concludes by discussing how the New Mechanist approach to causation and constitution leads to a sensible account of the nature and limits of reduction and emergence.

Abstract:
Chapter 4 introduces the ways in which institutional investors produce investment returns over time and space. In doing so, the chapter considers the 1937 theory of the firm by Coase and reviews the theory’s relevance in today’s environment. It then outlines the three building blocks underpinning the ways in which financial institutions produce investment returns in the context of spatially extensive financial markets: ecology of finance, managers and workers, and coordination. The chapter also demonstrates the distinctive attributes of financial institutions, especially vis-à-vis the power and authority of senior managers in relation to the institution’s goals and objectives. The chapter explores other influential factors, such as the ways in which location, particularly in large urban centres with extensive financial networks, can make a difference.
