Abstract:
There has been a confrontational structure to the relationship between Korea and Japan for several years, as the South Korean government reneged on the Japanese military “comfort women” agreement, and the Supreme Court’s ruling on compensation for forced laborers led to Japanese restrictions on Korean exports. In tandem with these developments, anti-Japanese sentiment in Korean society has been growing stronger, as have anti-Korean attitudes in Japanese society. This article suggests that the experience of the 2002 Korea-Japan joint World Cup was not conducive to better relations, but was rather the starting point of the current xenophobia within each country in relation to the other.

Abstract:
The relationship between Japan and Korea has complex historical, political, and cultural dynamics, often characterized by tensions and disputes. Influenced by the intervention of the superpowers, these two countries are economically interdependent and politically opposed. Despite the efforts of the Korean leader to improve the trend, the bilateral relationship faces challenges due to unresolved factors such as historical issues, territorial disputes, and war reparations. This paper takes the external threats affecting the cooperation between Japan and Korea as the research object and evaluates the current situation and obstacles to the bilateral relations between Japan and the Republic of Korea by analyzing the impact of actions taken by countries other than Japan and Korea on their domestic governance, economic conditions, foreign policy decisions, military arrangements, and bilateral relations development. Also, this paper prospects favorable conditions for tightening further bilateral communication, and looks forward to the possibilities of future cooperation between the two countries.

Abstract:
How does the economy of China and Japan interact with each other? Through building vector autoregression (VAR) model, this study examines the transmission mechanism of economic synchronization among the two nations from three perspectives, namely foreign direct investment (FDI), bilateral trade, and political relation. Based on this, relevant stabilizing measures for China’s economy are proposed. The findings of this study are as follows: (a) There exists business cycle co-movement between China and Japan. (b) The transmission mechanism of this co-movement contains bilateral trade and FDI. Therein, import contributes the most to China’s economic fluctuation, which is followed by FDI and export. (c) Bilateral political relation exerts indirect influence on China-Japan economic synchronization. (d) The impact of Japan’s economic fluctuations on the economy of China would be mitigated by expanding international trade markets, reducing financial market access restrictions, strengthening the political mutual trust, and encouraging communications between China and Japan in science, technology, and education, etc.

Abstract:
IntroductionA growing body of literature has demonstrated that cancer patients have a higher risk of suicide and cardiovascular mortality compared with the general population, especially immediately after a cancer diagnosis. Using data from the National Cancer Registry in Japan launched in January 2016, we will conduct the first nationwide population-based study in Japan to compare incidence of death by suicide, other externally caused injuries (ECIs) and cardiovascular disease following a cancer diagnosis with that of the general population in Japan. We will also aim to identify the patient subgroups and time periods associated with particularly high risk. Methods and analysisOur study subjects will consist of cancer cases diagnosed between 1 January 2016 and 31 December 2016 in Japan and they will be observed until 31 December 2018. We will calculate standardised mortality ratios (SMRs) and excess absolute risks (EARs) for suicide, other ECIs and cardiovascular death compared with the general population in Japan, after adjustment for sex, age and prefecture. SMRs and EARs will be calculated separately in relation to a number of factors: sex; age at diagnosis; time since cancer diagnosis; prefecture of residence at diagnosis; primary tumour site; behaviour code of tumour; extension of tumour; whether definitive surgery of the primary site was performed; and presence/absence of multiple primary tumours.Ethics and disseminationThe study protocol was approved by the institutional review board and ethics committee of the National Cancer Center Japan and Nagoya City University Graduate School of Medical Sciences. The findings will be disseminated through peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations.Trial registration numberUMIN000035118; Pre-results.

Abstract:
By the late 1930s, it became clear to informed Americans that the international system in East Asia had failed. The outbreak of war between Japan and China in 1937 demonstrated that the current system could no longer provide stability in the region. Four years later, Japan’s surprise attack on Pearl Harbor ended American neutrality and united the regional conflict with the World War. Even as war raged, Japanese aggression raised questions for the future. If Imperial Japan, the most powerful country in Asia, were defeated, what might replace its regional dominance? What would become of its colonies? What had caused Japanese militarism, and how could its resurgence be prevented? If America were to emerge from the war powerful enough to reshape global politics, what future for Japan would best serve American interests? The story of how these questions were answered and why a particular set of responses became American policy is the subject of this dissertation. This work provides an account of the post-war planning process and the deliberative period which shaped American policy towards Japan after surrender in 1945. It will look at how these questions came to be answered, both in terms of the formulation of actual policies implemented after the war and the inputs and environment in which responses developed. Much has been written on the outcome of these choices, there have been many histories of the postwar occupation of Japan and postwar US-Japan relations. But very little attention has been given to where the eventual policy came from. By bringing the aims and intentions of the planners to light, this work provides a new perspective on the policy that the United States imposed on Japan during the occupation period and after.

Abstract:
Japan has maintained a low profile in its diplomacy since the end of World War II, relying heavily on the United States for its security and prosperity. The cold war structure allowed Japan to maintain its passive foreign policy behavior. By the end of 1980s, West-East confrontations largely ended and global issues such as arms control, environmental problem, human rights, economic development, and ethnic conflicts became the main international concerns. It was expected that in this changed world environment, Japan as an economic power, would take on a more active international role. Yet Japan has not shown any significant political initiative despite of its willingness to contribute to international peace and prosperity. The primary purpose of this thesis is to identify the underlying factors that have kept Japan from being a strong voice and taking initiatives in world affairs. This study presents Japan's official guidelines on global issues as its foreign policy. The guidelines indicate that Japanese foreign policy is too general and broad; it aims at cooperation with everybody. Japan's foreign-policy behavior is represented by its voting behavior in the United Nations General Assembly. Inasmuch as it has adopted a U.N.-centered diplomacy, I believe that Japan's voting in the U.N. delineates its foreign-policy behavior. A statistical method of factor analysis I apply in this study delineates Japan's stance and voting cohesion issue by issue. The voting maps reveal Japan's ambivalent stance on most of the issues. Japan's voting pattern often does not follow its idealistic guidelines. The study further inquires into the discrepancy between Japan's foreign policy and its foreign-policy behavior. The main reasons seem to stem from its dependent security relations with the United States, the close economic ties with Asian countries and the oil-producing Middle East states, and historical constraints in relations with Asia. In addition, Japan's ambiguous foreign policy guidelines are themselves a factor which creates the discrepancy. These factors prevent Japan from independently reacting to international incidents. Yet given its financial and technological advances, Japan could play a leading role within the framework of international organizations, especially on global environmental issues.

Abstract:
In recent years, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has become the main driving force of the economic dynamism of Southeast Asia. Japan, being the economic leader of the Southeast Asian countries during the 1980s and the early 1990s, is in a declining position in terms of leadership. Japan has also been experiencing economic recession since the mid-1990s and displaying only subtle signs of recovery recently. China, however, has taken the advantage of being the most demanding market of the region and already established the functional mechanisms of economic integration with ASEAN. This economic configuration of the region is the main inquiry of this study. Although the growing economic integration of China with ASEAN is fairly recent, it is generally discussed in the academic circles, that China has been taking the lead as an economic player in Southeast Asia. However, it is argued in this study that China is not yet ready to replace Japan as an economic leader of Southeast Asian in the long-term. Given the recent economic interaction between ASEAN and China, it is early to predict that China would replace Japan'
s leading economic position. In addition to that, China'
s blooming economy with its domestic crisis potential and China'
s long-erm geo-strategic interests in the South China Sea should also be taken into account while analysing economic potentials of Japan and China in the ASEAN market. The study examines the related literature with a comparative methodology including the analysis of the recent statistical data and survey of the news.

Abstract:
This dissertation aims at exploring and analysing the effects of Japan&rsquo
s trust-based relations in the region of East Asia in the post-Cold War period within the framework of its anti-militaristic state identity and outlook. The main research question is based on how the Japanese policy makers constructed the meaning of the post-Cold War period, opening the ways and ideas to solidify the anti-militaristic state identity and posture. In this sense, Japan provides a significant case study for examining ontological security. The main argument of dissertation is based on building up Japan&rsquo
s ontological security structure in the regional context. Since the end of the Second World War, Japan has pursued an anti-militaristic state identity and posture. This attitude has been the guiding principle of Tokyo&rsquo
s foreign and security policy. In this dissertation, for the continuance of anti-militaristic identity successfully in the post-Cold War period, Japanese policy decision-makers have both configured and further sustained the country&rsquo
s trust-based relations with neighbouring countries in the region. This dissertation was analysed under the five main headings except the introduction chapter: (1) The historical background telling the story of anti-militaristic identity and posture of Japan, (2) Japan&rsquo
s emerging human security agenda in the Post-Cold War period, (3) Japan&rsquo
s cooperative initiatives at the regional level by focusing in particular on APEC and ARF. (4) Japan&rsquo
s relations with the significant others for its identity preservation. (5) The conclusions.

Abstract:
In this thesis concerning the protection of well-known trade marks against confusion in the European Community Trade Mark (CTM) and Japanese trademark systems, the author critically considers the difficulties in comprehensively defining ‘well-known trade mark’ in the relevant international trade mark instruments. After critical analysis of various definitions of both ‘trade mark’ and ‘well-known trade mark’, she undertakes a comparison of the definitions of the parallel concepts of ‘trade mark of repute’ and ‘syuchi-syohyo’, and also undertakes an assessment as to the extent to which these trade marks are protected against confusion and kondo in the CTM and Japanese systems, respectively. It is concluded that the protection of well- known trade marks against confusion in the CTM and Japan cannot be said to be completely clear, and the author identifies some areas for legal reform

Abstract:
The Introduction outlines the case for treating music, in the broad sense of music-related activities, as part of the general history of human activity, with reference to relevant (albeit scarce) scholarship. The author argues that examining music provides a valuable path to understanding global processes such as globalization in the sense of global integration, and the formation of national identity. The main argument is stated, namely that music was central to the making of modern Japan, and a brief chapter-by-chapter outline relates their respective topics to the overall theme. The main section of the book is divided into three interconnected parts, relating to the global, the national, and the local level. Globalization and nation-building, two major trends in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, can only be fully understood if developments in the different and diverse localities within the nation’s borders are taken into account: a nation-state has to unite the people within its borders. The chapters in Part Three are central to the book (which is reflected in their length and level of detail), because it is at the local level that we see most clearly the vital role played by music in drawing together the Japanese people in order to actively participate in the nation as well as experiencing themselves as part of a world of nation. It is also at the local level that the importance of personal initiative by individuals is most evident.

In Teaching Multiplication with Lesson Study, 25–35. Cham: Springer International Publishing, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/978-3-030-28561-6_2.

Abstract:
AbstractThis chapter shows how the teaching of multiplication is structured in national curriculum standards (programs) around the world. (The documents are distributed by national governments via the web. Those documents are written in different formats and depths. For understanding the descriptions of the standards, we also refer to national authorized textbooks for confirmation of meanings.) The countries chosen for comparison in this case are two countries in Asia, one in Europe, two in North America, and two in South America: Singapore, Japan, Portugal, the USA (where the Common Core State Standards (2010) are not national but are agreed on by most of the states), Mexico, Brazil, and Chile, from the viewpoint of their influences on Ibero-American countries. (The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) standards (published in 2000) and the Japanese and Singapore textbooks have been influential in Latin America. Additionally, Portugal was selected to be compared with Brazil). To distinguish between each country’s standard and the general standards described here, the national curriculum standards are just called the “program.” The comparison shows the differences in the programs for multiplication in these countries in relation to the sequence of the description and the way of explanation. The role of this chapter in Part I of this book is to provide the introductory questions that will be discussed in Chaps. 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 to explain the features of the Japanese approach. (As is discussed in Chap. 1, the Japanese approach includes the Japanese curriculum, textbooks, and methods of teaching which can be used for designing classes, as has been explored in Chile (see (Estrella, Mena, Olfos, Lesson Study in Chile: a very promising but still uncertain path. In Quaresma, Winsløw, Clivaz, da Ponte, Ní Shúilleabháin, Takahashi (eds), Mathematics lesson study around the world: Theoretical and methodological issues. Cham: Springer, pp. 105–122, 2018). The comparison focuses on multiplication of whole numbers. In multiplication, all of these countries seem to have similar goals—namely, for their students to grasp the meaning of multiplication and develop fluency in calculation. However, are they the same? By using the newest editions of each country’s curriculum standards, comparisons are done on the basis of the manner of writing, with assigned grades for the range of numbers, meanings, expression, tables, and multidigit multiplication. The relationship with other specific content such as division, the use of calculators, the treatment of multiples, and mixed arithmetic operations are beyond the scope of this comparison. Those are mentioned only if there is a need to show diversity.

The Great East Japan Earthquake and the subsequent tsunami on 11 March 2011 initiated accident conditions at several nuclear power plants (NPPs) on the north-east coast of Japan and developed into a severe accident at the Fukushima Daiichi NPP, which highlighted a number of nuclear safety issues. After the Fukushima Daiichi accident, new research and development (R&D) activities have been undertaken by many countries and international organizations relating to severe accidents at NPPs. The IAEA held, in cooperation with the OECD/NEA, the International Experts’ Meeting (IEM) on “Strengthening Research and Development Effectiveness in the Light of the Accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant” at IAEA Headquarters in Vienna, Austria, 16–20 February 2015. The objective of the IEM was to facilitate the exchange of information on these R&D activities and to further strengthen international collaboration among Member States and international organizations. One of the main conclusions of the IEM was that the Fukushima Daiichi accident had not identified completely new phenomena to be addressed, but that the existing strategies and priorities for R&D should be reconsidered. Significant R&D activities had been already performed regarding severe accidents of water cooled reactors (WCRs) before the accident, and the information was very useful for predicting and understanding the accident progression. However, the Fukushima Daiichi accident highlighted several challenges that should be addressed by reconsidering R&D strategies and priorities. Following this IEM, the IAEA invited several consultants to IAEA Headquarters, Vienna, Austria, 12–14 May 2015, and held a meeting in order to discuss proposals on possible IAEA activities to facilitate international R&D collaboration in relation to severe accidents and how to effectively disseminate the information obtained at the IEM. The IAEA also held Technical Meeting (TM) on “Post-Fukushima Research and Development Strategies and Priorities” at IAEA Headquarters, Vienna, Austria, 15–18 December 2015. The objective of this meeting was to provide a platform for experts from Member States and international organizations to exchange perspectives and information on strategies and priorities for R&D regarding the Fukushima Daiichi accident and severe accidents in general. The experts discussed R&D topic areas that need further attention and the benefits of possible international cooperation. This paper discusses lessons learned from the Fukushima Daiichi accident based on the presentations and discussions at the meetings mentioned above, and identifies the needs for further R&D activities to develop WCR technologies to cope with Fukushima Daiichi-type accidents.

Abstract:
There are numerous instances in which in-service flaws due to various kinds of damage and deterioration are found in equipment as a result of in-service inspections. The proper evaluation of such flaws is extremely important. Fitness-for-Service (FFS) codes, such as ASME B&PV Code Sec. XI and JSME S NA1 for nuclear power generation facilities and BS 7910 and API-RP579 for general industrial facilities, are available. In light of such circumstances, the High Pressure Institute of Japan (HPI) has prescribed its code “Assessment procedure for crack-like flaws in pressure equipment” for conducting quantitative safety evaluations of flaws detected in common industrial pressure components such as pressure vessels, piping, storage tanks, and so on designed and fabricated in accordance with Japanese codes and regulations such as JIS B8265 and High Pressure Gas Safety Law. The FFS code consists of Level 1 assessment (whereby assessment can be conducted without extensive knowledge of fracture mechanics) and Level 2 assessment (which enables more detailed fracture mechanics analyses and is currently being studied). The allowable flaw size is specified in accordance with the plate thickness. The required impact absorbed energies based on material strength, whether or not PWHT has been done and the orientation of the flaw in relation to the weld seam, are also specified. An approximated equation of stress intensity factor for an embedded flaw near the surface has been derived. The re-characterization procedure for assessing an embedded flaw has been clarified. The flaw can be judged to be acceptable if its size is less than that of an allowable flaw and the equipment is to be used at temperatures exceeding the temperature (MAT) at which the material absorbed energy meets the required impact absorbed energy.

Abstract:
This paper explores Japan’s position in relation to Taiwan including Japanese policy options in different potential conflict scenarios around the island. Japan has a substantial stake in the conflict, given its economic ties to China and Taiwan, energy security, and its military alliance with the United States. In recent years, Japan’s deterrence capabilities were greatly enhanced by the reinterpretation of its constitution in 2014, as well as the development of its military capabilities. Regardless of its pacifist heritage, its geographic proximity and diplomatic as well as security relations make Japan an innate part of any conflict over the fate of Taiwan. The main conclusion is that these factors, as well as its vital economic and strategic interests make the Japanese position not radically different from other countries reacting to similar crises.

The Changing Shape of the World Automobile Industry: A Multilayer Network Analysis of International Trade in Components and Parts. Institute for New Economic Thinking Working Paper Series, January 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.36687/inetwp173.

Abstract:
In 2018, after 25 years of the North America Trade Agreement (NAFTA), the United States requested new rules which, among other requirements, increased the regional con-tent in the production of automotive components and parts traded between the three part-ner countries, United States, Canada and Mexico. Signed by all three countries, the new trade agreement, USMCA, is to go into force in 2022. Nonetheless, after the 2020 Presi-dential election, the new treaty's future is under discussion, and its impact on the automo-tive industry is not entirely defined. Another significant shift in this industry – the acceler-ated rise of electric vehicles – also occurred in 2020: while the COVID-19 pandemic largely halted most plants in the automotive value chain all over the world, at the reopen-ing, the tide is now running against internal combustion engine vehicles, at least in the an-nouncements and in some large investments planned in Europe, Asia and the US. The definition of the pre-pandemic situation is a very helpful starting point for the analysis of the possible repercussions of the technological and geo-political transition, which has been accelerated by the epidemic, on geographical clusters and sectorial special-isations of the main regions and countries. This paper analyses the trade networks emerg-ing in the past 25 years in a new analytical framework. In the economic literature on inter-national trade, the study of the automotive global value chains has been addressed by us-ing network analysis, focusing on the centrality of geographical regions and countries while largely overlooking the contribution of countries' bilateral trading in components and parts as structuring forces of the subnetwork of countries and their specific position in the overall trade network. The paper focuses on such subnetworks as meso-level structures emerging in trade network over the last 25 years. Using the Infomap multilayer clustering algorithm, we are able to identify clusters of countries and their specific trades in the automotive internation-al trade network and to highlight the relative importance of each cluster, the interconnec-tions between them, and the contribution of countries and of components and parts in the clusters. We draw the data from the UN Comtrade database of directed export and import flows of 30 automotive components and parts among 42 countries (accounting for 98% of world trade flows of those items). The paper highlights the changes that occurred over 25 years in the geography of the trade relations, with particular with regard to denser and more hierarchical network gener-ated by Germany’s trade relations within EU countries and by the US preferential trade agreements with Canada and Mexico, and the upsurge of China. With a similar overall va-riety of traded components and parts within the main clusters (dominated respectively by Germany, US and Japan-China), the Infomap multilayer analysis singles out which com-ponents and parts determined the relative positions of countries in the various clusters and the changes over time in the relative positions of countries and their specialisations in mul-tilateral trades. Connections between clusters increase over time, while the relative im-portance of the main clusters and of some individual countries change significantly. The focus on US and Mexico and on Germany and Central Eastern European countries (Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia) will drive the comparative analysis.

Garrido, Isabel, and Irune Solera. Has the 2021 general SDR allocation been useful? For what and for whom? Madrid: Banco de España, August 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.53479/33423.

Full text
Abstract:
In the face of the COVID-19 crisis, the International Monetary Fund (IMF), other multilateral institutions and countries took unprecedented measures. Inter alia, the IMF agreed on an historical SDR allocation that more than tripled the volume of SDRs to cover long-term global reserve needs and ultimately support vulnerable countries. Member countries can keep SDRs to boost their reserves or use them in other ways, including to cancel their debts with the IMF, lend to the IMF or exchange SDRs for currencies. This document evaluates how members have used the 2021 SDR allocation. The findings show that most of the allocation has been used to increase reserves, although 40% of emerging economies and more than 60% of low-income countries have used SDRs to service their debts with the IMF or to exchange for currency, mainly for budgetary purposes in relation to social and health policies. Furthermore, in line with the G20’s objective to channel USD 100 bn of SDRs to countries in need, members with sound economic positions have voluntarily lent some of their SDRs to IMF trusts that finance vulnerable countries in affordable terms.

Zimmerman, Ephraim, and Staphanie Perles. Vegetation monitoring in relation to white-tailed deer browsing in First State National Historical Park: 2021 summary report. National Park Service, July 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.36967/2299655.

Full text
Abstract:
Baseline information on canopy regeneration and plant community composition is needed in order to better understand white-tailed deer browsing impacts at First State National Historical Park (FRST). In 2021, the Pennsylvania Natural Heritage Program (PNHP) established 20 permanent vegetation monitoring plots following methods developed by the NPS Eastern Rivers and Mountains Network (ERMN) to assess and monitor trends in vegetation (Perles et al. 2014b; Perles et al. 2017). These protocols provided an efficient method of assessing the current status of native and non-native vegetation and deer browsing impact. This report documents the methodology used to quantify the vegetative composition of natural areas at FRST and provides a summary of the data collected in the first year of monitoring. This first year’s activities (2021) included the initial baseline vegetation assessment and summary of results from the baseline data analysis. A variety of metrics used to assess the impact of deer browsing on the vegetation were calculated and are presented. A second survey is proposed for 2024. PNHP used the NPS ERMN database and analysis methods (Perles et al. 2014b) to summarize the condition in year 1 (2021). In year 4 (2024), PNHP will investigate changes in the condition of browse-sensitive understory plants and tree seedlings. Plots occurred in a variety of settings, ranging from younger successional communities to more mature forest stands. Seventy-five percent (75%) of the plots occurred in Mature or Late Successional forests. Disturbances and stressors, such as deer browsing can strongly influence future forest structure as open woodlands mature. A large population of white-tailed deer may severely impact succession from the open woodlands towards closed canopy forest. In closed canopy, later successional forests, a large deer population may inhibit canopy tree recruitment leading to regeneration failure. Given that FRST managers desire to maintain the landscape as forest, it is important to maintain an adequate number of seedlings and saplings of tree species to ensure the persistence of canopy of native tree species as Mature and Late Successional Forests continue to age. The 20 permanent sampling plots occurred within 5 plant communities described by Ebert (2016) and were classified using agglomerative hierarchical clustering (HAC analysis) and indicator species analysis. The most common plant communities within the group of sampling plots were the Mixed oak – beech forest and Mesic mixed tulip – oak-hickory-beech forest. The remaining plots were found in successional Tuliptree woodland, Successional woodland, and Thicket types. All plots were assigned to these types described in Ebert (2016) and crosswalked to the National Vegetation Classification (USNVC). A total of 128 plant species were recorded from the 20 plots at FRST. Eighteen (18) species were found in over ½ of the plots surveyed, of which eight (8) were non-native. In all, 29 plants occurring in the plots (23% of total species richness) were considered introduced (non-native). Non-native plant cover ranged from 0–98% as measured in the monitoring plot quadrats. Indicators of deer browsing varied by plant community type at FRST. In general, the drier Mixed oak – beech forests showed substantially greater impact of deer browsing and fewer seedlings of canopy species in the understory. FRST monitoring protocols focus on a few plant species considered as preferred food for white-tailed deer. Sustained browsing may be affecting long-term viability of these species within the parks. Based on the status of these regeneration metrics in FRST, we suggest that the forest in FRST are in imminent regeneration failure. We define imminent failure as parks that are experiencing severe regeneration failure and are at risk of forest loss due to very low seedling and sapling abundance, as well as species mismatches between canopy and regeneration layers. Given the poor regeneration of canopy species across all community types at FRST, managers should seek opportunities to conduct adaptive management in the park’s forests, especially mixed oak – beech forest, to experiment with and monitor the effects of fire, browse exclosures, and canopy thinning to encourage native canopy tree regeneration.

Full text
Abstract:
Ground-motion models (GMMs) for subduction earthquakes recently developed as part of the NGA-Subduction (NGA-Sub) project are compared in this report. The three models presented in this comparison report are documented in their respective PEER reports. Two of the models are developed for a global version and as well regionalized models. The third model is developed based on earthquakes contain in the NGA-Sub dataset only from Japan and as such is applicable for Japan. As part of the comparisons presented in this report, deterministic calculations are provided for the global and regional cases amongst the models. The digital values and additional plots from these deterministic comparisons are provided as part of the electronic supplement for this report. In addition, ground-motion estimates are provided for currently published subduction GMMs. Two example probabilistic seismic hazard analysis calculations are also presented for two sites located in the Pacific Northwest Region in the state of Washington. Based on the limited comparisons presented in this report, a general understanding of these new GMMs can be appreciated with the expectation that the implementation for a specific seismic hazard study should incorporate similar and additional comparisons and sensitivity studies similar to the ones presented in this report.
