Abstract:
This report is an evaluation of if it is good or bad to use a metaphor in order to display the results of an academic search engine in a web interface. In order to evaluate this we are describing our work with developing two different web interfaces for an academic search engine by the name Silverfish. This project has been a co-operation between Indian Institute of Information Technol- ogy in Bangalore, India and Malmˆ University K3, Sweden. To start our report we describe how we see our context we are to work within. We define our stakeholders as being academics worldwide and also define that we are working within a web 2.0 context. To strengthen our choices regarding the design process of the two different interfaces as well as in order to give more validity to our discussion surrounding metaphors we continue with presenting different studies and facts that give more weight to the above mentioned parts. To make it possible to create the interfaces we have made use of several methods. We give a short definition of how these methods are to be used and later describe in the design process how we have made use of them. To describe how we have made use of the methods as well as to describe how we have developed our prototypes we continue our report with describing the design process, regarding which deci- sions we have made and why we have made them. To summarize our report we come to a con- clusion regarding our thesis question; communicating related key phrases through web interface metaphors; good or bad? Regarding our question we have found that the orientational metaphor we are using does not work as it is supposed to. We believe that further studies are required in order to get a deeper un- derstanding of how the user understands the orientational metaphor we are using. This informa- tion could help us come to an understanding of how we could make better use of our orienta- tional metaphor, or help us find out of a metaphor that would be better to use than our orienta- tional metaphor.

Abstract:
Previous research showed that greater frequency and/or orgasmic consistency of penilevaginal intercourse (PVI) are the only sexual behaviours that are consistently associated with indices of better physical and psychological health, and relationship quality. Other sexual activities (notably masturbation and anal sex) tend to be unrelated or even inversely related to indices of health and relatedness. Study 1 showed that, in a sample of largely Scottish women, more use of immature psychological defence mechanisms (associated with psychopathology and relationship difficulties) was associated with lesser orgasmic consistency through PVI, but unrelated or directly related to other sexual behaviours. Study 2 replicated many findings of Study 1 in a sample of persons of diverse countries (47.6% Scottish and 4.8% from other parts of UK), and also showed that men’s immature defences are associated with greater frequency of sexual behaviours other than PVI. Study 2 also demonstrated that greater orgasmic frequency of PVI and/or lesser frequency of other sexual activities are associated with indices of better health and relatedness, namely greater heart rate variability, greater conscientiousness, and less avoidant attachment, in both sexes, and with less anxious attachment and greater handgrip strength, in women. Study 3 showed the same pattern of findings regarding conscientiousness, in a sample of mostly Scottish University students, after controlling for potentially confounding personality traits, but the behaviour of some students raises concerns regarding the validity of the findings. Study 4 confirmed the pattern of findings regarding immature defence mechanisms and relationship quality, in a sample of cohabiting British, after controlling for a variety of socio-cultural factors related to traditional ideology and negative attitudes to noncoital sex. The results provide support for the hypothesis that evolution selected biopsychological phenotypes linking capacity to seek and appreciate PVI with health and relatedness, as one strategy for promoting gene propagation

Abstract:
This thesis develops the theoretical construct of "relatedness." Relatedness is defined as a sense of connectedness or meaning which provides for acceptance and serenity in the face of "the things I cannot change" and is an empirical extension of the work of Victor Frankl in Man's Search for Meaning. To examine the possible interaction between locus of control and an hypothesized "relatedness" phenomenon, four hundred forty four students of introductory psychology at the University of Arizona were given the Rotter Social Reaction Inventory and the Antonovsky Sense of Coherence Scale. A subscale measuring relatedness was constructed by factor analysis of Rotter and Antonovsky items combined. Five subscales of the Rotter were identified by factor analysis. Correlation was performed between the Relatedness subscale and the Rotter and its various subscales. Regression procedures were applied using Relatedness and Sex as independent variables and the Rotter as the dependent variable.

Flora, J. K. "Relatedness, loneliness and longing in Qeqertaq, Greenland." Thesis, University of Cambridge, 2009. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.599087.

Full text
Abstract:
This is an ethnographic study of the concept of suicide in Qeqertaq, a small settlement in northwest Greenland. Research into suicide is often driven by a quest for identifying causalities. However, this study suggests it is by taking a broader view that a very different and local causality of suicide emerges. This thesis suggests that suicide may be understood as an extreme way of recreating relatedness. Part I: Relatedness: Having been bestowed the names of recently deceased relatives upon birth each person in Qeqertaq is a ‘returned person’. Names are vehicles for relatedness and personhood, which achieve their full potential, through repeated acts and processes of re-invoking relatedness. Uttering names and kinship terminologies in particular ways, sharing and eating particular foods and visiting particular places in the landscape are ways of re-invoking relatedness. This continuum, I suggest, feeds into a particular form of morality of circumventing feelings of longing, homesickness, bereavement and loneliness. Part II: Loneliness: Although people without relatives are virtually non-existent, they recognise loneliness as a predicament that can defeat anyone if relatedness is not re-invoked. Local concepts and feelings of longing and homesickness are instrumental in maintaining both relatedness as well as the aversion to loneliness and thus bring relatedness and loneliness together in such a way that the re-invocation of one becomes a vehicle for the continued re-invocation of the other. Both relatedness and loneliness are tied up with expectations and disappointments in relatedness and I argue that their interplay is part of a broader social pattern of ‘turning towards’ and ‘turning away’ of which the disappointed characters of the suicide and the dangerous ghost-like figure of qivittoq are parts. By comparing suicide and qivittoq as two extraordinary characters that ‘turn away’ and cross a threshold into loneliness, I suggest that their differences rest on the degree of irreversibility in which they ‘turn away’.

Abstract:
While pragmatics, through its integration of situational awareness and real world relevant knowledge, offers a high level of analysis that is suitable for real interpretation of natural dialogue, semantics, on the other end, represents a lower yet more tractable and affordable linguistic level of analysis using current technologies. Generally, the understanding of semantic meaning in literature has revolved around the famous quote ``You shall know a word by the company it keeps''. In this thesis we investigate the role of context constituents in decoding the semantic meaning of the engulfing context; specifically we probe the role of salient concepts, defined as content-bearing expressions which afford encyclopedic definitions, as a suitable source of semantic clues to an unambiguous interpretation of context. Furthermore, we integrate this world knowledge in building a new and robust unsupervised semantic model and apply it to entail semantic relatedness between textual pairs, whether they are words, sentences or paragraphs. Moreover, we explore the abstraction of semantics across languages and utilize our findings into building a novel multi-lingual semantic relatedness model exploiting information acquired from various languages. We demonstrate the effectiveness and the superiority of our mono-lingual and multi-lingual models through a comprehensive set of evaluations on specialized synthetic datasets for semantic relatedness as well as real world applications such as paraphrase detection and short answer grading. Our work represents a novel approach to integrate world-knowledge into current semantic models and a means to cross the language boundary for a better and more robust semantic relatedness representation, thus opening the door for an improved abstraction of meaning that carries the potential of ultimately imparting understanding of natural language to machines.

Abstract:
Conflicts are. This seemingly incomplete sentence bears many insights for the study of conflicts and their transformation - the practise. A newer consciousness of conflicts perceives them not per se as something negative, timely limited and violent but as first of all relational, not to be immediately judged on, also positive, and only transformable. This is the notion of conflicts that will be underlying this work and as we find it in the contemporary conflict transformation discourse (e.g. Lederach, 2005, 2007a; Galtung, 2000; Senghaas, 2004; Wills and others, 2006). Thereby conflicts are ubiquitously present on at least four dimensions of our phenomenological Being (Heidegger, 1995): the intrapersonal, the interpersonal, the structural, and the cultural one (e.g. Lederach and Maiese, 2003; Galtung, 2003). Conflicts always have psychological and sociological elements which coexist and therefore have to be contemplated psychosocially of: How and who am I in social systems? Our Being is always bound to systems we are forming part of. We cannot not be in systems. As soon as human life is formed, as soon as we are in the world, is family; are parents and child (Mahr, 1996). Thereby our systemic Being is more between us than in us. The relationships we form and naturally have, shape us much more than what I am individually

Abstract:
The ability to establish affective relatedness appears to be lacking in children with autism. As a result, the primary and secondary intersubjective engagements with others are impaired and affect the development of the child`s ability to symbolize. Research conducted on children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has identified quantitative data in connection with social behavior, pre verbal and verbal communication behavior, and emotional behavior. However, this research has not yet addressed the quality of the initial social and emotional relationships established by children with autism. It is widely known that the emotional connection is an important prerequisite for the symbolization ability in typical development (TD). The present research focuses on the investigation of two ASD children`s affective relatedness during their interaction with a therapist. A control group formed by 2 TD children was included in the investigation. The description of 5 taped scenes demonstrates that regardless of the qualitative differences among the ASD and TD groups, it is possible to observe a subtle trace of affective relatedness between the autistic children and the therapist.

Abstract:
From the viewpoint of Self-Determination Theory, this study evaluated theoretically competing models examining the relationships among one’s fear of missing out (FOMO) and multiple indicators of relatedness (satisfaction and frustration) with well-being (life satisfaction) and ill-being (depression) among a sample of emerging adults. The first model conceptualized that higher levels of FOMO would be related to higher levels of depressive symptomology and lower levels of life satisfaction, and that relationship would be mediated by relatedness satisfaction and frustration. Alternatively, the second model conceptualized that relatedness satisfaction would serve as a moderator of the relationship between FOMO and depressive symptomology and life satisfaction. Model 1 results indicated that an individual’s FOMO was associated with lower relatedness satisfaction and higher relatedness frustration, and, in turn, both forms of relatedness were significantly associated with perceptions of life satisfaction and depression. Model 2 results also indicated that one’s relatedness satisfaction or frustration did not serve as a moderator between the relationship of FOMO and well-being or ill-being. Discussion of the importance of relationship attachments, as well as clinical implications, will be included.

This thesis is an interpretive inquiry that seeks hermeneutic understandings of pedagogic moments through encountering and interrogating my lifeworld. I question our understanding of mind, self, other, world, and reality that informs our worldview. My inquiry manifests evidence that pedagogy is something we are and can be rather than something we do. It is a tribute to pedagogy’s ineffability, found in relating, touch and tact, showing pedagogy as a desirable phenomenon for human science research.

Iqbal, Nazalie. "Transnational subjectivities : the practice of relatedness among British Pakistanis." Thesis, Durham University, 2006. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/2552/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores the meaning and experience of local and transnational kin connections for Pakistani Muslims living in Teesside, United Kingdom. The thesis contributes to knowledge about 'the practice of kinship' in a transnational context. The attempt to combine an investigation of transnationalism with a study of how kin relations are conducted in the present day is one of the strengths of the work. The ethnography is based on eighteen months of fieldwork carried out among British Pakistani Muslims. It explores the domestic nature of transnationalism in kin connections that forms the experiential basis of global and local relationships. The research was undertaken with the cooperation of first, second and third-generation British Pakistanis living in the north east of England. Various ethnographic qualitative methods were used to collect data, including semi- structured interviews, life histories, participant observation and focus group discussions. demonstrates the complex interplay of gender, age, origin, kin connection and life-course events in creating variation in individuals' engagement with the transnational. I argue that during their migratory experiences many first and second-generation Pakistanis display new forms of' habits of meaning' or 'habitus' to cope with differences exposed in their transnational travels. The thesis is written from the perspective of local actors: people who identify themselves as Pakistani, British Pakistani and have a Pakistani-origin. Although the thesis attempts to foreground their perspectives and narratives, it is also infused with my open interpretation and analyses, which I attempt to distinguish from local 'emic' ones. I am much less interested in this thesis in generalising claims about British Pakistani migrants, than in local practices of British Pakistanis in Teesside. For British Pakistanis, transnational practices involve not only a particular post-colonial history, but also unique understandings of the meanings of birãdari (extended family), marriage and family life and the everyday practices in which the recipients of such global processes must live. The migration of Pakistanis into the United Kingdom however, has introduced volatile relationships between kin as new configurations of space, consumption and social reproduction are negotiated. A striking aspect of the lives of those whom I interviewed was the fact that most of them were in the process of acquiring new patterns of commodity consumption and desire. Narratives from parents and grandparents contain a 're-consciousness' of property relations revealing new ideas and practices about the importance of siblings and children in the new migratory context. Moreover, they form new self-definitions of fellow British Pakistanis and relatives living in Pakistan. It is these complex transnational reconfigurations (transnationalism, subjectivity, the meaning of ‘home' and relatedness) that comprise the main subject of the present thesis. However, this thesis spans several areas of anthropological interest: the practice of kinship and relatedness. South Asian migration, transnationalism, diaspora, intergenerational conflicts, nurturing practices, ethnicity and studies of ethnic minorities in Britain.

Taylor-Aiken, Amanda Jayne. "Relatedness and alienation in interpersonal understanding : a phenomenological account." Thesis, Durham University, 2011. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/3338/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis aims to provide a phenomenological exploration of relatedness and alienation in interpersonal understanding, which elucidates and supports recent interdisciplinary critiques of more traditional accounts of interpersonal understanding. Orthodox accounts of folk psychology, namely theory and simulation theories, have focused on the role of attributing mental states in understanding others. This focus has led to a neglect of how interaction and forms of relatedness contribute to the task of interpersonal understanding. Building on recent interdisciplinary research, my work aims to rectify this neglect through an exploration of how various forms of relations, particularly interactive relations between interlocutors, support interpersonal understanding. My account, therefore, emphasises understanding as a shared process, moving away from the spectatorial orientation of the orthodox accounts. My approach is distinctive in its use of Gadamerian hermeneutics to offer a novel and detailed account of the central role played by collaborative refinement of interpretative presuppositions. Examining face-to-face interaction, it becomes apparent that affective interactions often frame and underpin an ability to attribute mental states. I explore how, in conversational instances of interpersonal relatedness, understanding involves a continual collaborative refinement of interpretive presuppositions, resulting in a modification of understanding. From this my work broadens, taking into account how reciprocal embodied expression, space, and stance tacitly support an ability to relate to and understand others, in virtue of jointly inhabiting mutually meaningful social situations. To clarify the ways in which affective interaction and shared situation are partly constitutive of ability to understand others, I consider impaired forms of interpersonal understanding in the illnesses schizophrenia and depression. Examination of these instances highlights the central role held by an ability to dynamically engage and inhabit relations with others.

Torrance, David Alan. "Christian kinship : relatedness in Christian practice and moral thought." Thesis, University of Cambridge, 2017. https://www.repository.cam.ac.uk/handle/1810/269744.

Full text
Abstract:
Ideas of kinship play a significant role in structuring everyday life, and yet kinship has been neglected in Christian ethics, as well as moral philosophy and bioethics. Attention has been paid in these disciplines to the ethics of ‘family,’ but little regard has been paid to the fact that kinship is not a given, but is culturally contingent. The thesis seeks to remedy the neglect in recent Christian theological ethics by drawing on resources from the history of Christian thought and practice. It uses social anthropology both to unsettle the accounts of kinship used in Christian ethics, and to expose elements in Christian traditions of thought and practice relating to kinship. Notions of shared bodily substance, the house, gender and personhood recur cross-culturally in giving shape to kinship. By examining these four notions as they inform Christian thought and practice, a theological account is developed. Chapters dedicated to each of these four attempt to provide, in the first instance, a descriptive account of how the notion has structured Christian thought and practice in relation to kinship. Each chapter then turns, in the second instance, to a critical mode, offering a theological treatment of the chapter topic as it bears on kinship. The thesis concludes that kinship in Christ should be considered normatively primary for the Christian, but also that there are ways in which Christians have honoured this kinship in Christ by organising and playing out kinship on a smaller scale. In detailing the distinctively Christian organising principles that structure some practices of kinship ‘in miniature,’ another common practice – the special privileging of the blood tie in structuring kinship – is singled out for critique.

Sun, Meng. "Estimating relationships and relatedness from dense genome-wide data." Thesis, University of Leicester, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/36401.

Full text
Abstract:
Relationship and relatedness estimation from genetic markers is relevant to many areas, including genealogical research, genetic counselling, forensics, linkage analysis and association analyses in genetic epidemiology. Traditionally unlinked genetic markers (microsatellites) are used. But the problems which can be solved by such markers are limited. Linked genetic markers are not only available in much larger numbers, but also provide extra information which is not available from unlinked markers. It is desirable to exploit the increasing availability of dense genome-wide single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) data for estimating relationships and relatedness. While Method of Moments (MoM) methods and other non-pedigree approaches only give a degree of pairwise relatedness, a pedigree likelihood approach can distinguish exact relationships. The pedigree likelihood approach also has advantages in that extra individuals can be considered jointly and extra data such as Y-chromosomal and mitochondrial SNPs can be incorporated with autosomal SNPs easily. In this thesis I firstly confirm that the increase in information obtained from large sets of linked markers substantially increases the number of problems that can be solved with pedigree approach. Furthermore, when two distant relatives do share genome segments through identity by descent (IBD), we usually have greater power to distinguish more distant relatives from unrelated pairs than was previously believed. Data on extra individuals always improve discriminatory power, but the position of the extra individuals in the pedigree dictates the extent of this increase of power. Linkage Disequilibrium (LD) is an issue for pedigree likelihood approach and it needs to be dealt with. MoM methods are easy to use and are generally robust to the effect of LD, but they are only accurate for relatives up to second cousins. I propose using pedigree likelihood approach to estimate pairwise relatedness and find we can greatly improve the accuracy in detecting distant relatives.

Abstract:
In this thesis I examine familial dynamics and relations between Kenyan migrants in London and their non-migrant kin remaining in Kenya. Two transnational family configurations predominate: younger migrants and their non-migrant parents and siblings, and older transnational couples (migrant wives and non-migrant husbands). If migration is understood as a morally-laden social process, then how migrant and non-migrant kin engage with the distance(s) between them become the grounds on which what it means to be related is expressed and negotiated. Distance emerges not only as geographic and physical, but also as socially generated by the actions and inactions of kin. I argue that the emplacement of kin in different contexts post-migration, particularly younger migrants within a nascent Pentecostal community in London, mediates transnational kin relations. The thesis challenges a predominant strand of research on transnational families, which contends that migration disrupts kin relations and contributes to the commodification of love and care. Moreover, the focus on transnational Kenyan families fills a gap in African diaspora research that has largely focused on migrants from West Africa and issues of identity, diaspora politics, and development, while also addressing themes in African anthropology, such as, intergenerational reciprocity, social reproduction, and change.

Burbidge, Belinda Beverley. "Contemporary Wiradjuri relatedness in Peak Hill, New South Wales." Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/12046.

Abstract:
Wiradjuri Aboriginal people in Peak Hill, a small economically-declining town in central rural New South Wales, have been subjected to a century of government policies included segregation, assimilation, and forced relocations. Despite this local, colonial history Peak Hill Wiradjuri continue to experience daily life in a distinctively Wiradjuri way. To ‘be Wiradjuri’ is to be embedded within a complex web of close relationships that are socially, morally and emotionally developed with both kin and friends, human and non-human subjects. Despite dramatic social and cultural transformations in Wiradjuri meanings and practices of relatedness, the Wiradjuri social world and their ways of self-experience remain informed by past practices. To understand contemporary socialities, and thus the significance of these transformations, this thesis is an examination of the ways in which the moral and emotional order of relatedness governs relatedness, where daily lived experience of shared emotional states can be understood in terms of a language for the self and moral framework. Specifically, this thesis is an exploration of how Wiradjuri people negotiate relatedness in a space in which shared and contrasting Wiradjuri and non-Wiradjuri inter-subjectivities are experienced. This study draws on historical research and ethnographical fieldwork to move beyond an analysis of kinship in terms of structures, roles or values to explore the deeper foundations of emotions and states of being in everyday life.

The purpose of this study was to first examine the role of coaches, peers, and significant others in the development of relatedness as it applies to the motivation of adult Master swimmers, and second to develop recommendations for coaches. The participants in this study were 87 Masters swimmers from the Wasatch Front region of Utah in the counties of Davis, Weber, Utah, Wasatch, Salt Lake, and Summit. Participants in this study were registered members of United States Masters Swimming(USMS) and were spread across eleven age-group classifications in five-year increments and ranging in age from 18 to 74. There were 43 adult males and 44 adult females that participated in completing an open-ended response questionnaire. The results of this study show that relatedness, fostered by coaches, peers and significant others, plays a key role in getting and keeping adult Masters swimmer in the water to train and compete.

Abstract:
The exponential growth of scientific literature is creating an increased need for systems to process and assimilate knowledge contained within text. Literature Based Discovery (LBD) is a well established field that seeks to synthesize new knowledge from existing literature, but it has remained primarily in the theoretical realm rather than in real-world application. This lack of real-world adoption is due in part to the difficulty of LBD, but also due to several solvable problems present in LBD today. Of these problems, the ones in most critical need of improvement are: (1) the over-generation of knowledge by LBD systems, (2) a lack of meaningful evaluation standards, and (3) the difficulty interpreting LBD output. We address each of these problems by: (1) developing indirect relatedness measures for ranking and filtering LBD hypotheses; (2) developing a representative evaluation dataset and applying meaningful evaluation methods to individual components of LBD; (3) developing an interactive visualization system that allows a user to explore LBD output in its entirety. In addressing these problems, we make several contributions, most importantly: (1) state of the art results for estimating direct semantic relatedness, (2) development of set association measures, (3) development of indirect association measures, (4) development of a standard LBD evaluation dataset, (5) division of LBD into discrete components with well defined evaluation methods, (6) development of automatic functional group discovery, and (7) integration of indirect relatedness measures and automatic functional group discovery into a comprehensive LBD visualization system. Our results inform future development of LBD systems, and contribute to creating more effective LBD systems.

Cheng, Weining. "Working together : relatedness and economy amongst the Rukai of Taiwan." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/24343.

Abstract:
This dissertation examines the mutual construction of relatedness and the economy amongst the Rukai of Taiwan. A person is imagined as the embodiment of a couple’s collaborative efforts at work and hence practises of work are central to making a person the site of relatedness. Significantly, work refers to both human efforts and human agency – in contrast to ritual performance. With respect to their experiences of capitalism, I suggest that money not only embodies the fruit of labour for the Rukai, but is also thought to be a living thing with fertility that is important for domestic reproduction as well as the realisation of inter-house relations. Rukai workers consider work for kin paid by piece rate to be the enactment of kinship morality rather than undertaken just for payment. With kin-employer’s provision of gifts to kin-workers, an act of exploitation is transfigured into a practice implying reciprocity. Above all, workers emphasise conviviality in doing piecework in the company of kin, and such work enacts domestic sociality in the Rukai context. By contrast, labour paid in daily wages is viewed as toil, and a wage is seen as ‘bitter money’. This is associated with experiences of unreasonable labour time on the shop floor. In the wake of increasing unemployment, the moral code stemming from kinship in turn underpins the provision of food to jobless kin. Meanwhile, the Rukai expect the government, viewed as a superior, powerful caretaker, to offer them opportunities of employment in terms of ‘having pity’ on the unemployed. However, Rukai engagement in wage labour is, strikingly, experienced as bodily affliction. I argue that Rukai participation in charismatic healing practices for the purpose of repairing distress and affliction is tantamount to implicit resistance to the encroachment of capitalism.

Abstract:
This thesis is the story of how forms of relatedness in social organization and kinship changed among Inuit after the Canadian government assumed control of their lives. Respect and affection are identified as attributes through which to understand important contexts of relationship among Inuit. Kin and other relations are reviewed before major contact with the Western world, followed by a close look at the dynamics of relational and social change in a number of contexts during the government era after the 1950s. These shifts are readily identifiable in Inuit youth suicide, which as one form of social perturbation can be viewed as a postcolonial disorder. Inuit in Nunavut under the age of 24 have a suicide rate ten times the rate of Canada. This thesis examines the lives of Inuit male youth, and analyzes the relationships – particularly sexual and familial – in which suicidality becomes manifest. The thesis then shifts to the recent efforts by youth to stop the suicides. The activities of youth in this regard represent a reclaiming of collective agency at the community level. The youth implemented programs that, with community support, stopped the suicides for a period of time. Igloolik is one of two communities described that benefited from this social action by youth. The thesis analyzes the successes in this community by tracing the development of a local youth group and its efforts at community action. This thesis is a story of transformation by outside and then by inside forces. In conclusion, the thesis examines some of the struggles of Inuit youth today, and the means by which male youth can become resilient and collective efforts of youth can be sustained into the future.
Abstract:
In spite of many indications to the contrary, not least the tenor of the times which includes both the remnant left after the "death of God" as well as the rise of New Age religiosity, this thesis proposes, using feminist and feminine archetypal thinking, that the theory of culture that Christianity, and specifically Catholicism, formulates, is more relevant than ever for the culture it had a part in creating. Within the frame of Christian value reality, a "religion of relatedness" is centred on the Great Commandment which orders loving relatedness to God, then to oneself, and finally to others. What this has to mean in practice is that our relatedness to others depends on our relatedness with ourselves which depends on our relatedness to a beneficent God. Our relatedness to ourselves and to God can be appreciated and evaluated through the lens of Jungian thought - in particular Jung's theory of individuation. Our relatedness to others and the success of that as expressed in the health of our cultural milieu can be appreciated and evaluated through the lens of Lacanian discourse theory. Both individual and cultural growth are part of a developmental and maturation process leading to the "paradox, depth and intergenerational responsibility" that Fowler (1981) describes as characteristic of a Stage 5 level of faith in his Stages of Faith model. That complexity in Stage 5 understanding is seen as essential for growing out of the social and environmental problems that beset human life at this point in its history.

Abstract:
Relying solely on Web browsers to navigate large Web sites has created some navigation problems for users. Many researchers have stressed the importance of improving site user orientation and have suggested the use of information visualisation techniques, in particular "site maps" or "overview diagrams" to address this issue. Link prediction and the semantic relatedness of Web pages have been incorporated into such site maps. This thesis addresses disorientation within Web sites by presenting a visualisation of the site in order to answer one of the three fundamental questions identified by Nielsen and others that users might ask when they become disoriented while navigating a Web site, namely, Where am I now? Where have I been? Where can I go next? A method for making link predictions, which is based on Markov chains, has been developed and implemented in order to answer the third question, "where can I go next?". The method utilises information about the path already followed by the user. In addition to link prediction, pages which are semantically similar to the "current" page are automatically identified using an approach which is based on lexical chains. The proposed approach for link prediction using an exponentially-smoothed transition probability matrix incorporating site usage data over a time period was evaluated by comparing with similar approach developed by Sarukkai. The proposed semantic relatedness approach using weighted lexical chains was empirically compared with an earlier approach developed by Green using synset weight vectors. In conclusion, this thesis argues that Web site link prediction and the identification of semantically-related Web pages can be used to overcome disorientation. The approaches proposed are demonstrated to be superior to earlier methods.

Abstract:
From an economic perspective the value of a group of related businesses under one management is derived from the potential for synergy, based on the exploitation of underlying economies of scope. To realise this inherent economic value, organisational theorists have argued that a purposively cooperative pattern of structures, systems and processes must be put in place. Divisions of modem multidivisional companies are internal, quasi-corporations of related businesses and, as such, theoretical economic/organisational rationales would posit divisions as cooperative enterprises. Using a sample of divisions purposively chosen to comprise businesses that were highly related, this thesis set out to explore the extent to which divisional managing directors expressed views and initiated organisational dynamics consistent with a cooperative perspective. Semi-structured interviews with senior divisional personnel in 12 divisions and with business and functional level staff in 2 of these provided the prime source of data which served as a basis from which a case study was written for each division. The cases were analysed in terms of the membership benefits (value) the divisional managing director was attempting to optimise for the component businesses and the extent to which he expressed a cooperative orientation and was overseeing cooperative structures, processes and systems. Two categories of division are identified. The 'cooperative' grouping is consistent with the theoretical view of economies of scope and cooperative structures but a larger number of divisions are categorised as 'non-cooperative' with perspectives, systems etc. consistent with a traditional M-form orientation of autonomous, non-interacting businesses. Reasons for this mismatch of theory and practice are discussed with the existence of non-cooperative divisions being explained as the consequence of a variety of organisational contingencies. Implications for divisional management and practice in multidivisional firms are suggested.

Mphaka, Mamofella. "A reservoir urban living room- Increasing water relatedness in Marabastad." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/78520.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation aims to investigate how architecture can improve water literacy and, thus, water conservation and security, by bringing the user closer to the building’s water processes and systems. The programmatic function of the building is an urban living room. Here, the dwellers of the adjacent social housing development – about 3000 people – will be provided amenities for mostly recreational purposes. Furthermore, the tens of thousands of people who travel into Pretoria CBD daily for various government services, will be provided with a place to pause, linger, and perhaps have something to eat. The architectural exploration aims to empower the user through the provision of basic water services and surrounding secondary services, whilst at the same time enhancing the everyday user’s relationship with, and reverence of, water. The two main water resources that will be focused on are rain roof water and storm water. In an urban context where storm water runoff is currently treated as a destructive force and the water is discarded as quickly as possible from the city, the project will endeavor to harness this resource and utilise it to enhance the architecture. Similarly, roof rainwater will also be collected and utilised. The project will invite water into the building in various ways that enhance the climatic conditions within the building. Unlike in the traditional manner of waterproofing and keeping the water out of the building, these enhancing processes will be made visible to the users of the building in order to increase their understanding. This dissertation endeavors to add to the large body of research into the global quest for water security, underpinning itself in the context of the Marabastad, Pretoria.

Abstract:
Relatedness, industrial branching and technological cohesion in US metropolitan areas, Regional Studies. Work by evolutionary economic geographers on the role of industry relatedness for regional economic development is extended into a number of methodological and empirical directions. First, relatedness is measured as the intensity of inputoutput linkages between industries. Second, this measure is employed to examine industry evolution in 360 US metropolitan areas. Third, an employment-weighted measure of metropolitan technological cohesion is developed. The results confirm that technological relatedness is positively related to metropolitan industry portfolio membership and industry entry and negatively related to industry exit. The decomposition of technological cohesion indicates that the selection of related incumbent industries complements industry entry and exit as the main drivers of change in metropolitan technological cohesion.

Full text
Abstract:
Sexual selection shaped psychological mechanisms in both sexes to assess potential mates for evidence of mate quality (Buss, 2005). Attraction preferences are one such mechanism (Sugiyama, 2005) and physical attraction preferences are sensitive to fitness-promoting traits present in a potential mate. Physically attractive traits are thought to act as signals of good genetic quality (Neff & Pitcher, 2005) and are preferred because of the advantage such quality bestows towards reproductive success. Specifically, genetic quality is proposed to be a biological requirement necessary for physically attractive traits to develop and be maintained (Johnstone & Grafen, 1993). Furthermore, genetic quality is heritable to offspring, thereby increasing offspring reproductive success (Orr, 2009). All mating decisions inherently involve trade-offs due to costs inflicted on time and resources when choosing a long-term mate. Assessing a mate for genetic quality is imperative to ensuring one selects a quality mate with heritable fitness benefits towards offspring reproductive success (Buss, 2005). In order to minimize costs and maximize benefits when making mate selection decisions, humans use multiple and redundant signals of mate quality (Fink & Penton-Voak, 2002; Møller & Pomiankowski, 1993). Accordingly, this study supposed that siblings act as redundant signals of genetic quality that would factor into mating decisions. Because genetic quality is heritable (Houle, 1991) and visible through physical attractiveness (Thornhill & Gangestad, 1999), this study explored the possibility that knowledge of relatedness influenced attractiveness judgments of human faces. Supporting the main hypothesis of the current study, siblings affected judgments of physical attractiveness for target faces. Analyses showed this effect to be driven entirely by female raters for both male [t(62)=3.87, p<.001] and female [t(61)=2.24, p=.029] target faces. Secondary analyses examining the effects of sibling pair attractiveness differences (low vs. high) showed that relatedness significantly increased female ratings of facial attractiveness for both low and high facially attractive male and low facially attractive female target faces. Results offer two possible conclusions as to the role relatedness may serve in mate quality assessments that align with parental investment as well as kin selection assumptions.

Abstract:
Prior research on maternal postpartum care, the transition to motherhood, pelvic floor dysfunction, and pelvic floor muscle training (PFMT) has revealed that postpartum women are often denied the basic information, instruction, and preventive strategies necessary for optimal postbirth rehabilitation and psychological well-being. Employing a dual framework of self-determination theory and personal growth initiative (PGI) theory, this quantitative study utilized a cross-sectional design to investigate if autonomy, competence, and relatedness satisfaction predicted PGI in postpartum women. Differences in autonomy, competence, relatedness, and PGI between PFMT practicing and nonpracticing postpartum women were also examined. A web-based survey method was employed to collect data from 229 postpartum women, which consisted of 121 women not practicing PFMT and 108 women practicing PFMT. The Basic Psychological Need Satisfaction and Frustration Scale measured autonomy, competence, and relatedness. The PGI Scale-II measured PGI. Standard multiple regression and 4 independent-samples t tests were used to analyze the data. Results indicated that autonomy, competence, and relatedness predicted PGI. There were no significant mean differences between PFMT practicing and nonpracticing women. These findings have implications for positive social change such that the medical community and policy makers can utilize the fulfillment of postpartum women's needs for autonomy, competence, and relatedness to improve women's odds for optimal adjustment and adaptation to life after childbirth.

Abstract:
The study of venture idea characteristics and the contextual fit between venture ideas and individuals are key research goals in entrepreneurship (Davidsson, 2004). However, to date there has been limited scholarly attention given to these phenomena. Accordingly, this study aims to help fill the gap by investigating the importance of novelty and relatedness of venture ideas in entrepreneurial firms. On the premise that new venture creation is a process and that research should be focused on the early stages of the venturing process, this study primarily focuses its attention on examining how venture idea novelty and relatedness affect the performance in the venture creation process. Different types and degrees of novelty are considered here. Relatedness is shown to be based on individuals’ prior knowledge and resource endowment. Performance in the venture creation process is evaluated according to four possible outcomes: making progress, getting operational, being terminated and achieving positive cash flow. A theoretical model is developed demonstrating the relationship between these variables along with the investment of time and money. Several hypotheses are developed to be tested. Among them, it is hypothesised that novelty hinders short term performance in the venture creation process. On the other hand knowledge and resource relatedness are hypothesised to promote performance. An experimental study was required in order to understand how different types and degrees of novelty and relatedness of venture ideas affect the attractiveness of venture ideas in the eyes of experienced entrepreneurs. Thus, the empirical work in this thesis was based on two separate studies. In the first one, a conjoint analysis experiment was conducted on 32 experienced entrepreneurs in order to ascertain attitudinal preferences regarding venture idea attractiveness based on novelty, relatedness and potential financial gains. This helped to estimate utility values for different levels of different attributes of venture ideas and their relative importance in the attractiveness. The second study was a longitudinal investigation of how venture idea novelty and relatedness affect the performance in the venture creation process. The data for this study is from the Comprehensive Australian Study for Entrepreneurial Emergence (CAUSEE) project that has been established in order to explore the new venture creation process in Australia. CAUSEE collects data from a representative sample of over 30,000 households in Australia using random digit dialling (RDD) telephone interviews. From these cases, data was collected at two points in time during a 12 month period from 493 firms, who are currently involved in the start-up process. Hypotheses were tested and inferences were derived through descriptive statistics, confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modelling. Results of study 1 indicate that venture idea characteristics have a role in the attractiveness and entrepreneurs prefer to introduce a moderate degree of novelty across all types of venture ideas concerned. Knowledge relatedness is demonstrated to be a more significant factor in attractiveness than resource relatedness. Results of study 2 show that the novelty hinders nascent venture performance. On the other hand, resource relatedness has a positive impact on performance unlike knowledge relatedness which has none. The results of these studies have important implications for potential entrepreneurs, investors, researchers, consultants etc. by developing a better understanding in the venture creation process and its success factors in terms of both theory and practice.

Full text
Abstract:
This study, concerned with perceptions of relatedness, is partly based on tape-recorded, semi-structured discussions with ninety-seven English women. Except in the case of my principal informant, these discussions took place in a London family planning clinic over two six-month fieldwork periods during 1985 and 1987. Discussions with my principal informant, who was recruited through an ante-natal clinic, took place over a four and a half year period. The study also analyses eighty drawings of the body made by sixteen of the informants. The study suggests that the expressions 'blood' and 'flesh and blood' which are used by informants to describe 'kinship' relationships denote the recognition of a common identity, but do not consistently refer to a biological relationship. Instead, these expressions appear to indicate a complex model of procreation which incorporates both social and biomedical knowledge. This model appears to inform a view of relatedness which includes understandings of biomedical genetics and certain notions of 'openness', 'closeness' and 'sameness' which can be interpreted in either physical or metaphysical terms. These notions have implications for the way in which the body and individuality are perceived. It is suggested, for example, that in certain circumstances, the 'person' and the 'body' are not isometric for those of the same 'flesh and blood'. The study is thus particularly concerned with the cultural construction of the body and the way in which the relationships between such constructed bodies are understood. It aims to contribute towards an understanding of the little-examined ontological basis of western 'kinship', particularly in the context of new reproductive technologies which stress genetic relatedness.

Full text
Abstract:
The current study examined two means of reducing uncertainty in visual search: 1) visual relatedness of a prime to the target (a data-driven, bottom-up processing) and 2) expectancy (a top-down process based on the proportion of validly primed trials). The two processes were decoupled using a short and a long inter-stimulus interval (ISI) to examine their time course in visual search. Competing hypotheses were contrasted in order to determine whether relatedness is associated with iconic memory (Neely, 1977) or a longer lasting visual-structural implicit memory (Schacter and Cooper, 1995) and what role participant expectancy plays in visual search performance. Twelve participants engaged in a discrimination task and a visual search task. The obtained results suggest that visual relatedness is a bottom-up process, probably mediated by a short-term iconic store that affects search performance early, but whose effects rapidly decay. They also suggest that expectancy is a top-down process that requires time to build up before it can affect visual search performance, but whose effects are more long lasting than visual relatedness.

Abstract:
The sex of and genetic relatedness among interacting individuals are known to be biologically fundamental features that characterize the composition of animal groups. Current work continues to illuminate reasons for the variety of animal social patterns, including patterns in group membership. I investigated the composition of dusky dolphin groups relative to sex and relatedness at two locations in New Zealand. In Kaikoura, dusky dolphins are found year-round, foraging nocturnally on verticallymigrating prey and socializing in distinct group types (mating, nursery, and adult) during the day. By contrast, dusky dolphins use Admiralty Bay, where they feed diurnally on small schooling fishes, primarily in the winter. Molecular sexing revealed the sex of 107 dusky dolphins. The Kaikoura data support previous findings that small mating groups consist mostly of males and indicate that small adult groups can consist of either or both sexes. In Admiralty Bay, the percentage of female dolphins present during the study was estimated to be only 7.4%−22.2% (95% confidence interval, n=88). A randomization test further indicates that dusky dolphins in Admiralty Bay grouped preferentially with same-sex individuals. Nuclear and mitochondrial markers were used to investigate patterns of relatedness. Dusky dolphins sampled in Kaikoura (n=17) and Admiralty Bay (n=47) were genotyped at seven microsatellite loci, and genetic relatedness among all genotyped pairs was estimated. A randomization test indicates that dusky dolphins did not group preferentially by relatedness in Admiralty Bay. Grouping history for 13 genotyped samples was also known from a multi-year photographic record of individually distinctive dusky dolphins. No relationship was found between these longer-term grouping patterns and genetic relatedness. The d-loop region of the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) was sequenced for 197 dusky dolphins. The pattern of grouping among dolphins with different haplotypes indicates that dusky dolphin groups are not strongly structured by maternal lineages. However, data from eight individual dusky dolphins hint that nursery groups in Kaikoura tend to consist of dolphins that share a maternal ancestor. This investigation raises many questions about the nature of dusky dolphin social organization and suggests promising avenues for finer-grained investigations into the causes and consequences of dusky dolphin group structure.

Zammit, Claire Andrea. "Feminine Power as a Tripartite System of Relatedness| A Theoretical Exploration." Thesis, California Institute of Integral Studies, 2018. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10686624.

Abstract:

This study explores a feminine system of power conceived of as a tripartite system of relatedness, comprised of three power centers: sourced through a generative relationship with ourselves, Life, and others. This theoretical dissertation describes feminine power’s roots as developed for and with women over the past decade.

I begin by situating the research within our present moment: the paradoxical situation of the rise of women, and decline in female happiness. I then examine various forms of power before describing the feminine power course. Next, I examine the feminine and relatedness (especially relational selves), followed by an exploration of disconnection, what holds us back culturally—individualism and the Western mind, cosmological lack, and shame (toxic anxiety) at the personal level.

I then describe the theoretical foundations of feminine power, by first focusing on the experiences and scholarship that directly informed my work including Self-Relations psychotherapy, Swimme and Spretnak’s ecological postmodernism course, the GDOC process, and collective intelligence. And finally I focus on transformative learning theory to explore the parallels between feminine power principles and methodologies and ways in which feminine power is informed by transformative learning, and can inform transformative learning.

This study endeavours to explicate the importance of relatedness as power and the transformative benefits of envisioning power in this way, especially as it relates to women who are seeking to self-actualize and participate in social transformation. Results will benefit women who want to realize these higher possibilities and also higher human potential in general. As well it will be of interest to educators and participants in the field of transformative learning and change as well as others who seek to understand and embrace the power of relatedness.

Abstract:
The world population is growing and becoming more connected whereby disease transmission is becoming an increasingly important issue. To learn more about disease spread, honey bees (Apis mellifera) could provide an animal-model system for network transmission. The honey bees have both an individual and a social defense against pathogens, their diseases are well studied and they enable studies on hundreds of individuals. The genetic relatedness is believed to be one of many important factors for disease transmission. A hypothesis is that the more closely related the honey bees are the more interactions will occur. In this study, the genetic relatedness in honey bees was analyzed by the use of microsatellite-DNA primers, in a multiplex PCR. Of the 18 microsatellite-DNA primers that were evaluated, the loci HB-C16-05, A007, AC006, HB-C16-02, AP043 and UN351 showed the highest variation. However, when applied on a larger material, the PCR-products did not yield any chromatograms that were possible to score. Many factors possibly affecting the result are discussed and further efforts will be made to improve the method and thereby determine genetic relatedness.

Fragoulaki, M. "Kinship in Thucydides : xyngeneia and relatedness between cities and ethnic groups." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2010. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/20217/.

Abstract:
This thesis studies the phenomenon of kinship in Thucydides’ History. Kinship is traditionally viewed in relation to the domestic domain. In Thucydides, however, xyngeneia/xyngenes – the terms denoting kinship – are more frequently used to indicate colonial and/or racial ties between cities. It is this type of xyngeneia, together with other types of relatedness between cities, communities and ethnic groups that are the focus of my investigation. Both these two categories of collective kinship ties were highly exploitable and effective in the sphere of politics, by the application of what has been termed ‘kinship diplomacy’. The constant reshaping of mythical narratives in relation to their historical and political contexts is central to my project. My thesis is divided into five chapters. Chapter 1 is a general introduction, including a typology of kinship, my theoretical underpinnings, and method of work. In chapter 2, I explore comprehensively the challenging variety of the language of kinship in Thucydides; in chapter 3, I discuss in detail the phenomenon of xyngeneia between a metropolis and its apoikia, in its ethical, emotional and practical dimension, through the case of Korinth and its two more conspicuous apoikiai in the work: Kerkyra and Syracuse. Chapters 4 and 5 concentrate on the two major belligerent cities, Dorian Sparta and Ionian Athens, respectively, and they both fall into two parts; their first part examines xyngeneia ties, and the second, ties of relatedness (i.e. types of connections outside descent). Both chapters offer discussions of test-cases, generally organised in terms of geography and ethnicity. Informed by recent anthropological work on social forms and experiences of relatedness, and by the sociology of ethnicity and emotions, and using kinship between cities and communities for the first time as an angle from which Thucydides’ text can be examined, my thesis aims to offer new insights from the narratological, stylistic and historical points of view.

Neville, Fergus Gilmour. "The experience of participating in crowds : shared identity, relatedness and emotionality." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/3112.

Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to extend the social identity model of crowd behaviour (Reicher, 1984, 1987, 1996) by exploring the experience of collective participation, with an emphasis upon quality of within-crowd social relations (‘relatedness') and collective emotionality. A multi-method research strategy is employed to study these topics at a variety of crowd events. Studies 1 and 2 use ethnography and retrospective interviews at a student protest and public screenings of football matches to generate hypotheses for subsequent testing. Study 3 then tests these hypotheses by means of questionnaire data collected during Study 2. Using an experimental ‘visualisation' paradigm, Study 4 demonstrates the role of shared identity (and not simply self-categorization) in generating relatedness. Studies 5 and 6 present evidence that groups of high relatedness participants experience identity-relevant stimuli as more emotionally intense than low relatedness groups. Study 7 concludes the empirical work by using questionnaire data collected at political protests to test a model of collective experience based upon the findings of the previous studies. The thesis argues that a perception of shared identity with co-present others can positively transform social relations towards relatedness (connectedness, validation and recognition). Relatedness may then be experienced emotionally, and facilitate the realisation of group goals which may also have emotional consequences. Strength of social identity is also noted as an antecedent to group-based emotion. In this way the analysis offers three ways in which social identity may lead to emotionality of collective experience, contradicting ‘classic' crowd psychology in which crowd emotion was rooted in a loss of identity. Preliminary evidence is also presented suggesting that the experience of collective participation may have a role to play in determining future social identification and participation in co-action.
