Abstract:
Chapter 6 grapples with the problem of relatedness, which requires one to confront foundational questions in moral philosophy and their implications for forfeiture theory. The core issue is whether a wrongdoer forfeits her right against being harmed for any reason whatsoever (the unlimited-reasons approach), or only for reasons appropriately related to her wrongdoing (the limited-reasons approach). After rebutting the initial impression that the unlimited-reasons approach is wholly implausible, the chapter offers some reasons in defense of the conclusion that wrongdoers do not forfeit their rights against being harmed in general; more specifically, they forfeit their right against being punished, which (by definition) involves being intentionally stigmatized for one’s putative wrongdoing.

Birch, Jonathan. Cultural Relatedness and Human Social Evolution. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198733058.003.0008.

Full text
Abstract:
Humans often set aside their own self-interest to help others and punish free riders, even when interacting with strangers. To explain the origin of these ‘broad-scope prosocial preferences’, we should consider the processes of cultural evolution that might have acted in early human populations. Two types of cultural selection can be distinguished: CS1, in which cultural differences between individuals cause differences in their reproductive success; and CS2, in which cultural differences between individuals cause differences in their ‘cultural fitness’. This chapter proposes, speculatively, that human social evolution involved a gradual decoupling of cultural fitness from reproductive success. A cultural version of Hamilton’s rule, in which the coefficient of genetic relatedness is replaced by a coefficient of cultural relatedness, provides a helpful organizing framework for thinking about the evolution of social behaviour by CS1, and leads to a ‘cultural relatedness hypothesis’ regarding the origins of human prosociality.

Abstract:
Social behaviour is widespread in the microbial world, yet social evolution theory was mostly developed with multicellular animals in mind. One difference between multicellular organisms and microbes is the prevalence of mobile genetic elements, such as plasmids, in microbial populations. Plasmids are often implicated in the production of so-called public goods, and relatedness may be at the heart of this phenomenon. However, gene mobility introduces a temporal aspect to relatedness: because genotypes can change over the life cycle, two bacteria may share a gene at one time point, but not at some earlier or later time point. This chapter argues that the best concept of relatedness in this context is a diachronic concept that captures the association between actor genotypes at the moment of gene expression and recipient genotypes at the end of the life cycle.

Huang, Minyao, Jiranthara Srioutai, and Mélanie Gréaux. Charting the speaker-relatedness of impersonal pronouns. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198786658.003.0007.

Full text
Abstract:
Impersonal pronouns have been claimed to express generic reference that possesses a special connection to the speaker in unembedded contexts. Drawing on cross-linguistic data and new experimental findings, the authors propose a novel typology to capture the range of speaker-related interpretations associated with impersonal pronouns, and put forward a contextualist semantics that explicates the proposed typology. Contrastive evidence from English, French, and Thai will testify that the uses of comparable impersonal forms in these languages allow two dimensions of variation, pertaining to speaker/non-speaker reference and generalization/non-generalization. These variations are further construed as two dimensions of contextual development—at the levels of content and force—of an unspecified, merely generic meaning of the impersonal pronoun.
