Abstract:
This study reviews the available clinical studies of Reiki to determine whether there is evidence for Reiki providing more than just a placebo effect. The available English-language literature of Reiki was reviewed, specifically for peer-reviewed clinical studies with more than 20 participants in the Reiki treatment arm, controlling for a placebo effect. Of the 13 suitable studies, 8 demonstrated Reiki being more effective than placebo, 4 found no difference but had questionable statistical resolving power, and only one provided clear evidence for not providing benefit. Viewed collectively, these studies provide reasonably strong support for Reiki being more effective than placebo. From the information currently available, Reiki is a safe and gentle “complementary” therapy that activates the parasympathetic nervous system to heal body and mind. It has potential for broader use in management of chronic health conditions, and possibly in postoperative recovery. Research is needed to optimize the delivery of Reiki.

Abstract:
This pilot study examined the effects of Reiki therapy and companionship on improvements in quality of life, mood, and symptom distress during chemotherapy. Thirty-six breast cancer patients received usual care, Reiki, or a companion during chemotherapy. First, data were collected from patients receiving usual care. Second, patients were randomized to either receive Reiki or a companion during chemotherapy. Questionnaires assessing quality of life, mood, symptom distress, and Reiki acceptability were completed at baseline and chemotherapy sessions 1, 2, and 4. Reiki was rated relaxing with no side effects. Reiki and companion groups reported improvements in quality of life and mood that were greater than those seen in the usual care group. Interventions during chemotherapy, such as Reiki or companionship, are feasible, acceptable, and may reduce side effects.

Abstract:
Purpose: Reiki is a growing complementary therapy in pediatric oncology that needs evidence to become more credible among the health community. A within-subject design experiment was conducted to pilot testing the feasibility and efficacy of Reiki to provide pain relief among pediatric patients undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). Method: Pediatric patients undergoing HSCT during the inpatient phase in the Stem Cell Transplantation Unit were eligible to participate to the pilot study. Short and medium effects were assessed investigating the increase or decrease of patient’s pain during three specific time periods (“delta”) of the day: morning of the Reiki session versus assessment before Reiki session (within subjects control period), assessment before Reiki session versus assessment after Reiki session (within subjects experimental period) and assessment after Reiki session versus morning the day after Reiki session (within subject follow-up period). The long-term effects were verified comparing the pain evolution in the day of the Reiki session with the following rest day. Results: The effect of 88 Reiki therapy sessions in nine patients (Mage = 12; Female = 61%) was analyzed following a short, medium, and long-term perspective. Repeated-measures analysis of variance revealed a significant difference among the three periods ( F = 17,17 p < .0001): A decrease of the pain occurred in the experimental period in short and medium term, while in the follow-up period, the pain level remained stable. Conclusions: This study demonstrates the feasibility of using Reiki therapy in pediatric cancer patients undergoing HSCT. Furthermore, these findings evidence that trained pediatric oncology nurses can insert Reiki into their clinical practice as a valid instrument for diminishing suffering from cancer in childhood.

Abstract:
The aim was to contribute to an evidence base for the efficacy of Reiki. Initially in three cases studies chronic fatigue syndrome patients received seven Reiki treatments over eight weeks. All three showed overall health improvements following treatment, although one relapsed at eight-week follow-up. Without a control group the improvements may have been due to expectation, relaxation and practitioner effects. A randomised controlled trial was next conducted where 35 undergraduates over twoand- a-half to twelve weeks received ten 20-minute Reiki or No-Reiki sessions while their attention was absorbed in self-hypnosis or guided relaxation. The Reiki group showed comparatively greater improvements in illness symptoms and stress, although they had higher baseline scores. A constructive replication was conducted where 40 students - half with high depression and/or anxiety and half with low depression and/or anxiety - were randomised to receive Reiki or a non-Reiki-control. Participants experienced six 25-minute sessions over two to eight weeks, where they underwent a guided-relaxation to facilitate Reiki-blinding. Those with high anxiety and/or depression who received Reiki had significantly better overall mood at five-week follow-up, whereas there was no change in the other controls. Three double-blind experiments followed involving a total of eight Reiki Masters. In each experiment different Reiki Masters each treated four dishes of gamma-irradiated canary seeds. Germination was monitored daily for 12 days and compared with control dishes. Overall analysis of the three studies found no statistical germination differences between the groups, although the dishes treated third and fourth had higher gem1ination than their controls. However, the controls of the dishes treated first had higher germination than their Reiki dishes, and higher germination than other control dishes, presumably by chanceIn conclusion, while benefits occurred following Reiki in each study, due to limitations of the studies nothing can be concluded with regards to a Reiki effect

Beeler, Dori Michelle. "An ethnographic account of Reiki practice in Britain." Thesis, Durham University, 2015. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/11098/.

Full text
Abstract:
Reiki practice is a hands-on-healing method with spiritual foundations that travelled from Japan to the West in the 1930s. Since that time it has rapidly grown in popularity and has taken root in many countries around the world. This thesis is the result of 14 months of ethnographic fieldwork intended to develop a detailed understanding of what Reiki practice means to participants in Britain. I focus on three groups: Reiki practitioners, Reiki clients and medical professionals. First, I introduce important Reiki terms and concepts. Second, after a discussion of methods, I explore a specific method for researching spirituality and the role that interiority has in this approach. A disciplinary practice grounded in spirituality, Reiki is considered as a technology of the self. I apply a triadic analysis of doing—becoming—being in order to examine the ways in which practitioners processually embody the Reiki practice in their lives. In the following chapters I delve into the meaning of Reiki practice. Central to this is the link between spirituality and well-being. This link is investigated through discussions on how subjective spirituality derives meaning through practise and an ethical imperative for care in Reiki practice. Additionally, as it pertains to the health care market, I critically discuss Reiki practice as a commodity. In maintaining a detailed, anthropological focus, the complex nature and diversity of meaning underpinning Reiki practice in Britain begins to emerge. This comprises of the diverse journeys of this study’s participants, including myself, each aiming for an embodied well-being that transcends common understandings of spirituality and health and is often characterised in terms of a peaceful and harmonious life.

Maharaj, Akashni. "The impact of reiki and philophonetics on the victims of domestic violence." Thesis, University of Zululand, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10530/1106.

Full text
Abstract:
Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree DPhil (Community Psychology) in the Faculty of Arts, in the Department of Psychology at the University of Zululand, South Africa, 2011.
Domestic violence is a huge social, moral and spiritual problem in society today and many traditional methods of healing such as psychodynamic, solution-focused and cognitive behavioural therapies have left a vacuum when addressing the needs of the abused woman. This study aimed to determine whether there is a place for integrative therapies, particularly Philophonetics and Reiki which are both considered to be “body-based” therapies in the treatment of survivors of Domestic Violence. The sample was drawn from patients that sought treatment from the Community Care Centre and consisted of eight case studies of women who have been abused. A phenomenological approach was used in order to find the meaning the women attached to their experience of being abused. The findings of the study revealed a reduction in both depressive and anxiety symptoms. Depression and anxiety are common diagnosis for those who have suffered abuse and prior to the study all participants showed signs of depression and anxiety. The findings further showed that with Reiki therapy significant changes occurred physically as well as psychologically. With Philophonetics therapy changes occurred at a deeper layer as individuals were able to access the abuse in a nonverbal manner, without intellectualizing the problem. Both therapies proved to be effective due to the fact that individual’s had to “feel” rather than “think”. A further finding was that all participants felt comfortable enough to access their spirituality, thus showing that mind-body connection is vital in treating abuse. Finally it was revealed that no therapy can work in isolation, therefore the combination of traditional and CAM therapies had shown merit for the twenty first century therapist.

Gibson, Helen Elizabeth. "Exploring the effects of Reiki self-use on health literacy." Thesis, University of Leeds, 2012. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/3757/.

Full text
Abstract:
Health literacy represents the cognitive and social skills which determine the motivation and ability of individuals to gain access to, understand and use information in ways which promote and maintain good health (Nutbeam and World Health 1998:10). To date, there is a paucity of research looking at health literacy in terms of specific types of Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) use. However, levels of current usage of CAM with their emphasis on raising awareness about health and healing suggest that they may be an acceptable and useful way to help people to manage their health and wellbeing. Reiki can be learned by anyone and, once a person has learned it, he or she is encouraged to regularly use Reiki on themselves as a means of self-care. This research address the question; how does learning and self-use of Reiki enhance health literacy? The starting point of this multi-stage qualitative project was the formation of a theoretical model of Reiki health literacy based on a critical review of the Reiki and health literacy literature. The model was refined using unstructured interviews with a purposive sample of 10 Reiki Master Teachers and further explored in semi-structured interviews with 25 Reiki level one and two practitioners who regularly self use Reiki. Analysis of the data indicated that participants perceived Reiki as an ‘easy’ skill to learn and valuable to use on a regular basis. Such self-use helped them make changes to their lifestyle, including diet and ways they coped at work. Reiki was used pro-actively to prevent ill-health and maintain good physical and emotional health. Participants spoke of using their Reiki knowledge and skills to self-treat minor physical ailments (headaches, muscular pains) and to manage mental and emotional problems such as worry, stress and anxiety. This research develops, refines and applies a novel model of Reiki health literacy and in doing so provides supportive evidence of the potential of learning Reiki and its regular self-use to enable a pro-active approach to health and well-being. Implications of this research include the use of Reiki as a supportive intervention for enhancing health literacy. Because anyone can learn and practise self-use of Reiki it may be a useful intervention for enhancing the health literacy skills of disadvantaged populations who are least likely to have highly developed health literacy skills. The research adds to the limited evidence base on self-use of Reiki and deepens understanding of the benefits of Reiki.

Abstract:
Countercultural movements, initiated mainly in the 60\'s and 70\'s, questioned the capitalist- technocratic society and encouraged greater politicization of social life, enabling the extension of the debates and tensions that affected the existing social institutions, refuting established paradigms. This fact allowed a (re)valuing and even reappropriation (or creation) of holistic perspectives regarding the body and health, and the inclusion of other explanatory dimensions, beyond the ones offered by biomedical rationality. With an increased acceptance of alternative or complementary practices, there was more space for the return of ancient healing methods through hands, among them, those that do not require direct touch between \"healer\" and patient, such as reiki and johrei, of the World Messianic Church. This study aimed to recognize and interpret the meanings of reiki and johrei, considering the technical and conceptual frameworks upon which they are based, as well as to understand how they affect the behavior of its practitioners and their social relations. In order to interpret these meanings and experiences, Clifford Geertz\'s interpretive anthropology and the ethnographic method were adopted as frameworks. The research was carried out in two sites, a Reiki Center and the World Messianic Church, both in Ribeirão Preto, state of São Paulo, Brazil, from October 2009 to January 2012. The study included 15 reiki practitioners as main subjects and 5 frequenters of the Center, as secondary subjects; 14 messianic as main subjects, and 5 frequenters of the Church, as secondary subjects. Data were collected through participant observation, semi-structured interviews and field diary. The main results indicate that belief in the healing power of these energies, reiki and johrei, is the main support of their effectiveness. Both the Messianic Church doctrine as well as the doctrine and theories associated with reiki, were able to provide new meanings to issues or problems of these subjects, modifying behaviors such as mood, aggressiveness, tolerance and sociability, allowing for the emergence of a \"holistic identity\" and the setting of new \"communities of enchantment\" regarding these two practices.

Abstract:

Clinicians working in community mental health clinics are at high risk for burnout. Burnout is a problem involving emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced personal accomplishment. Reiki is a holistic biofield energy therapy beneficial for reducing stress. The purpose of this study was to determine if 30-minutes of healing touch could reduce burnout in community mental health clinicians. This quantitative study utilized a cross-over design to explore the efficacy of Reiki versus sham-Reiki, a pseudo treatment designed to mimic true Reiki, as a means to reduce symptoms of burnout in community mental health clinicians. The Maslach Burnout Inventory - Human Services Survey and several other measures were administered before and after the intervention phases throughout the study. The results suggest that hands-on interventions are beneficial in reducing stress for community mental health clinicians and that Reiki has a positive effect greater than relaxing touch alone. The findings show that Reiki reduces burnout in community mental health clinicians.
