Abstract:
This chapter discusses “autism dads” who write about their children. By analyzing memoirs written by several fathers of autistic children, it shows how fathers rehearse topoi related to fatherhood, masculinity, the family as an institution, and their professional or disciplinary identities in order to rhetorically constitute roles for themselves. In order to constitute this character, fathers must sometimes reject or revise other characters grounded in the commonplaces of hegemonic masculinity that emphasize male strength, success, and power and adopt new topoi of fatherhood. However, although fathers refigure available characterizations of fatherhood, few reject that role entirely. Whereas narratives written by mothers tend to take on a quest for recovery, narratives written by fathers tend to take on a quest for understanding—not simply of the child in question but of the father's own character and identity.

Abstract:
European choreographers Pina Bausch and Jérôme Bel share a critical line of inquiry into the established dance practices of their time, putting both the identity of their subjects and the identity of the genre of dance at risk. By addressing and including their own rehearsal processes in the performance, Bausch and Bel play with their own aesthetic strategies and their coming into being as social practices. As the author argues, the political, here, lies in the blurring of definite and defining categories, thus creating ambivalent and polyvalent scenes that defy explanation. Yet, Bausch and Bel’s work on repetition also produces an excess of energy that blurs distinctions and differences. As an emotional response to a rhythm that is created out of the in-difference to difference, this force undoes what subjects have learned socially. It is here that their freedom lies.

Abstract:
This chapter pursues across a wide span of intellectual history reflections on the kind of plebeian political agency so graphic in the opening of Coriolanus. Examining presentations of popular tumult in Shakespeare’s source, Livy, it tracks both Machiavelli’s republican reading of Livy and the interest in Livy’s narrative displayed by Shakespeare’s contemporary, Gabriel Harvey. The broadening of parameters recovers a line of thinkers open to relatively radical ideas about the constitution of a mixed polity, sharply contrasting the repressive anti-populism doctrinal in Elyot’s Boke Named the Governour and official Tudor discourse. Shakespeare’s play unfolds a distinctive doubleness of tone, dramatizing conflicting political perspectives rather as Livy had done, but with a prevailing darkness to its caustic and destabilizing vision. Shakespeare incorporates into this Roman yet contemporary drama a charged, emergent lexicon, deploying such relative novelties as ‘depopulate’ and ‘plebs’, and coining the term ‘Weales men’.
