Cronin, Michael G. In the Wake of Joyce: Irish Writing after 1939. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198749394.003.0013.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter maps the mid-century period of the Irish novel in terms of the various aesthetic choices which Irish writers took as they contended imaginatively with the contradictions and conundrums of modernity, and the specific form which these took in a postcolonial society. After all, James Joyce’s Finnegans Wake (1939) destroyed the conventions of literary realism in a carnivalesque conflagration. He also dismantled the linguistic structures of intelligibility that uphold this mode of representation, yet he simultaneously produced an interfusion of Irish history with world history and of world history with global myth. Thus, this chapter conceives of a distinction between experimentation and realism as a performative rather than a constative assertion. The advantage of this model is that it not only recalibrates the distinction between realism and modernism in Irish writing, but also dissolves any clean division between Irish writers critically surveying the condition of modern Ireland.

Gonçalves, Alexandra, Pedro Marcos-Alberca, Peter Sogaard, and José Luis Zamorano. Assessment of systolic function. Oxford University Press, 2011. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780199599639.003.0008.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter describes the different modalities for assessment of systolic function by transthoracic echocardiography. Firstly, the basic principles of physiology and the determinants of left ventricular (LV) performance are considered, followed by a systematic appraisal of the methodologies for global LV systolic function assessment. Starting with M-mode echocardiography, passing through the traditional two-dimensional echocardiography evaluation to three-dimensional echocardiography approaches, main strengths and limitations are described. Power Doppler usefulness, regarding stroke volume calculations and dP/dt measurement are summarily explained, taking into consideration the usual pitfalls found in daily practice. There is a section dedicated to regional systolic function evaluation, with the recommendations for standardized LV division and differential characteristics of wall motion abnormalities. Additionally, more recent approaches with tissue Doppler imaging and strain analyses for global and regional LV function assessment are described. Finally, a section is dedicated to right ventricle systolic function which describes all modalities of evaluation.

Abstract:
This book examines how borders structure the working class, shaping exploitation and resistance. The book uses the example of Britain to demonstrate the contemporary relevance of a Marxist approach and develop insights that have international relevance. In the wake of the 'Brexit referendum' and facing an uncertain future, debate rages as to whether immigration is good or bad for British society, in economic and cultural terms. Within the political mainstream, both sides in this debate share the assumptions that categories based on nationality, citizenship and country of origin are fixed, legitimate, and appropriate for assessing social change, measuring social benefit and harm, and allocating resources. Likewise, both sides of the debate limit their horizons to what is possible within the capitalist mode of production. Given the long history of migration to and from Britain, and the historically recent development of ideas of nation and citizenship, it is necessary to ask how and why borders and the divides they produce have become so deeply rooted and widely accepted, to the point that they appear as a ‘common sense’ division of humanity. Perhaps more importantly, what role do these ideas play in shaping responses to the crisis, and what are the alternatives?

John, Law, and Evelyn Ruppert, eds. Modes of Knowing. Mattering Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.28938/9780993144981.

Full text
Abstract:
How might we think differently? This book is an attempt to respond to this question. Its contributors are all interested in non-standard modes of knowing. They are all more or less uneasy with the restrictions or the agendas implied by academic modes of knowing, and they have chosen to do this by working with, through, or against one important Western alternative - that of the baroque. Why the baroque? One answer is that the baroque made space for and fostered many forms of otherness. It involved knowing things differently, extravagantly, excessively, and in materially heterogeneous ways, and it apprehended that which is other and could not be caught in a cognitive or symbolic net. It also involved knowing in ways that did not gather into a single point and knew itself to be performative. As part of a great Western division between rationalist and non-rationalist modes of knowing, the baroque is therefore a possible resource for creating ways of knowing differently - a storehouse of possible alternative techniques. To say this is not to say that it is the right mode of knowing. The book's authors do not seek to create a 'baroque social science' whatever that might be, but instead work in a range of ways to explore how drawing on the 'resources of the baroque' can help us to think differently.

Creaser, John. Milton and the Resources of the Line. Oxford University PressOxford, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780192864253.001.0001.

Abstract:
Abstract Whereas prose is written in sentences, poetry is written in lines, lines that may or may not coincide with the syntax of the sentence. Lines add an aural and visual mode of punctuation through bringing some degree of pause and sense of weight at the line-turn. So lineation, the division of poetry into lines, opens a repertoire of possibilities to the poet. Notably, it encourages an enhanced concentration on meaning, rhythm, and sound. It makes metrical patterns possible, with interactions between regularity and deviation; or the presence or absence of structural rhyme; or the multiple variations of the line-turn, whether in harmony with syntax or overflowing in ways either more or less conspicuous. This book develops ways for exploring the expressive resources of the verse line through concentration on the greatest of English poets, John Milton. Topics examined include: the interaction of strictness and freedom in the rhythms of Milton’s line and paragraph; the interfusion of diverse prosodies in a single poem; approaches to free verse; rhyme in the earlier lyric verse and modes of near-rhyme in the later blank verse; the diverse modes of onomatopoeia; and the complex interweavings of prosody and ideology in this very political poet. The great themes and issues and characters of Milton’s innovative and always controversial poetry are perceived afresh, being approached intimately through the rich possibilities of the line. The insights of the approach will illuminate the reading of any poetry.
