Entworfen werden skizzenartige Transferszenarien für die beiden Sequenzen "Rex regum die agne" (Hermannus Contractus, gestorben 1054) und "Sancti merita Benedicti" (möglicherweise Frankreich, 10. Jahrhundert). Beide Stücke wurden in je unterschiedlicher Weise über die Alpen nach Italien transferiert und erfuhren im 12. Jahrhundert im Zuge der Hirsauer Reformbewegung ein weitere Verbreitung: "Sancti merita" als regulärer Bestandteil des Hirsauer Sequenziars, "Rex regum" hingegen als optionales Anhängsel des normierten Hirsauer Repertoires. Die Beobachtungen zu den zwei Fallbeispielen bestärken die Vermutung, dass aufgrund des im Vergleich zum kodifizierten Grundstock der Messgesänge eher freien und ungebundenen Status der Sequenz die Verbreitungs- und Rezeptionsmechanismen des Genres - zumal für Einzelstücke außerhalb von verfestigten Komplexen wie etwa Notker Balbulus' "Liber hymnorum" - generell variabel und weniger kontrollierbar gewesen sein dürften.

The article discusses the date, content and historical context of the lapis Pollae, a Latin inscription set alongside the road from Capua to Regium, recording the distance to various places and listing the achievements of an unknown Roman magistrate. Comparison with a milestone associated with the same road prompts a dating earlier than 131 bc, and internal evidence suggests a date prior to the Servile Wars, which broke out around 138 bc. It is further argued that by listing his achievements the magistrate was attempting to secure the political support of the colonial elites of Lucania. The article also uses the inscription as evidence for three historical themes: (1) the role of local communities and Italian entrepreneurs in the exploitation of public land in Sicily; (2) the role of local and Roman elites in southern Italian agricultural intensification; (3) Rome's use of road building to support colonization.

Abstract The Animalistic Style differs in different phases with its own and different characteristics. There is also a 'hybrid' Animalistic Style, in which different phases of this decorative style are juxtaposed or even merged. This variant of the Animalistic Style has been analyzed here with the aim of clarifying the key moments of the evolution between the different phases. Three artifacts from the Regnum Langobardorum were considered, in particular from Cividale San Mauro, Torino Lingotto and San Lorenzo in Vaccoli in Lucca. Comparing the three artifacts, some conclusions were reached. The presence of artifacts decorated in a 'hybrid' Animalistic Style reaffirms an apparently banal concept: the use of a decorative style does not cease with the appearance of a new one. Furthermore, the coexistence in the Italian context of the different phases of the Animalistic Style on the same artifact indicates that the evolution towards the II Animalistic Style may have occurred in Italy.

(the powers of the horses of Erichthonios) Vergil illustrates her seemingly superhuman speed and lightness of foot, before passing on to the impression she made upon the watching population who have swarmed out of their homes and fields to mark the finery of her appearance and equipment:illam omnis tectis agrisque effusa iuventusturbaque miratur matrum et prospectat euntem,attonitis inhians animis ut regius ostrovelet honos levis umeros, ut fibula crinemauro internectat, Lyciam ut gerat ipsa pharetramet pastoralem praefixa cuspide myrtum.

Se edita, traduce y anota en este artículo un Panegyricum in laudem Serenissimorum Regum Hispaniae Fernandi et Hellysabeth dedicado a los logros militares y políticos de los Reyes Católicos, que fue compuesto por el humanista italiano Gaspare Manio de Clodiis. El poema, escrito en hexámetros, se imprimió en Sevilla hacia 1492. Pese a que el único ejemplar impreso del que hay noticias se encuentra en una biblioteca privada escocesa y resulta por el momento inaccesible, podemos conocer el texto del Panegyricum a través de una copia manuscrita que hasta la fecha ha estado mal catalogada (ms. 1530 de la Biblioteca de la Universidad de Salamanca). Se brindan en el artículo todos los datos conocidos sobre el autor, sobre el incunable y sobre el manuscrito, y se ubica la composición en el contexto literario y propagandístico de la época.

In the library of the Gioenian Academy are stored two copies of the book A Description of active and extinct Volcanoes, of Earthquakes, and of Thermal Springs (London 1848, II edition), bearing a dedication to the Academy by Dr Charles Daubeny. The author was a prominent chemist, geologist and botanist which made a particular endeavour to write A kind of Guide-book to the explorers of Districts in which Volcanic phaenomena occur abroad. Daubeny was elected to the prestigious Aldrichian Chair of Chemistry, University of Oxford (1834), was appointed to the Sherardian Chair of Botany (1834) and to the Sibthorpian Chair of Rural Economy (1840). He undertook interesting travels to Europe and North America (1819-1845), particularly three journeys to the south of Italy (1823-1845). He wrote Sketch of the Geology of Sicily (The Edinburgh Philosophical Journal, 1825), a booklet in two parts never translated into Italian. During the visit to the Etna region Daubeny had contact with local scholars such as Mario and Carlo Gemmellaro, Giuseppe Alessi and Carmelo Maravigna which supported his appointment as foreign associate of the Gioenian Society at Catania since 10 June 1824. He was the first of the squad of geologists as early foreign corresponding or honorary members. The relevance of his main book, Sicilian booklet and other works is discussed.

Based on an ontological frame for comparative onomasiological lexicology which embeds the RAIN eventity type as an exponent-shaped activity into a general linguistic ontology as well as an ontology of motion, the words for RAIN in two Germanic and two Romance languages are compared with respect to their semantic and syntactic variability. It turns out that the Germanic forms are more flexible than the Romance forms. English rain has the highest variability: It can be used with eight valencies, a nominal and seven verbal ones, and with five different meanings, and it is the only one to display a valence that combines an expletive subject with a cognate object as well as a causativized eventity meaning. On the other hand only German regnen has a resultativized meaning. The Romance languages too show some internal variance: In allowing both an impersonal construction with a generalized meaning and a source construction, Spanish llover is slightly more flexible than Italian piovere. Finally, an Optimality Theoretic account of the data is adumbrated in terms of three principles: Avoid linking mismatches, Avoid heterogeneity of sentence patterns, and Avoid redundancy.

Il Cristo Pantocratore assunto come modello iconografico per rappresentare la sovranità nel Regnum Siciliae in età normanno-sveva, lasciava il posto in età angioina alla paupertas che, per effetto della predicazione francescana accolta dai sovrani napoletani, diventava elemento ineludibile di legittimità del potere regio. In una lettera scritta dal frate francescano Angelo Clareno a Filippo di Majorca, fratello della regina Sancha di Napoli, sono delineati i caratteri del sovrano cristiforme, che esercita il potere in qualità di amministratore del Regno, il cui unico titolare è Cristo: a Deo coronato è solo il sovrano che si fa povero, spogliandosi di ogni brama di potere e volontà di dominio ed usando le ricchezze pubbliche al solo scopo di provvedere alle necessità dei sudditi. La novitas francescana incentrata sul precetto del sine proprio codificato nella Regola di Francesco di Assisi, mutava la rappresentazione e le prospettive della sovranità, introducendo nel diritto pubblico del Regno concetti giuridici destinati ad ampliare la gamma dei significati di proprietas e di dominium. Con sguardo retrospettivo ed in continuità con la tradizione del Regno, l’ultimo re delle Due Sicilie Francesco II di Borbone faceva appello agli antichi diritti del trono di Ruggero e di Carlo III per difendere la legittima sovranità delle Due Sicilie, richiamando così l’immagine del sovrano a Deo coronato la cui condotta politica non poteva che ispirarsi al modello della christiformitas: una prospettiva della sovranità che di lì a poco sarebbe stata travolta dagli eventi rivoluzionari in corso in tutta Europa, dei quali tuttavia potrebbe fornire un’inedita chiave di lettura, proponendosi come momento di riflessione sulla storia italiana ed europea degli ultimi due secoli.

Abstract The Papyrology Rooms of the Sackler Library, Oxford, preserve the correspondence of the two famous papyrologists, B.P. Grenfell and A.S. Hunt, conducted with numerous scholars from Britain and continental Europe. The main subject of this correspondence is the editing of the texts found in the Oxyrhynchus papyri. On some of the most important legal papyri, namely P.Oxy. 1814, 2089 and especially 2103 (the ‘Oxyrhynchus Gaius’), Hunt sought out the collaboration of Roman law scholars such as F. de Zulueta, W.W. Buckland and E. Levy, who all participated to a varying degree in the editorial process of these legal documents. These letters, some of them hitherto unknown, are here published for the first time. They reveal the extent of the collaboration especially between Hunt and de Zulueta, the Regius Professor of Civil Law in Oxford. In addition to this correspondence, another letter on the same theme was discovered in the University Library of Aberdeen, where de Zulueta’s personal library is now located. It was sent to de Zulueta by the Italian Roman law scholar V. Arangio-Ruiz, who was then editing the PSI 1182 (the ‘Florentine Gaius’), and shows the ongoing dialogue between the two scholars on this important legal papyrus. Taken together, these letters allow a reconstruction of the editorial process applied to some of the most significant witnesses of Roman law sources unearthed in the 20th century. This in turn provokes reflection on the desirability of submitting the standard editions of these sources to a new critical analysis.

ROMAN LAW AS A PART OF THE ENGLISH DOCTRINE AND PRACTICE OF THE INTERNATIONAL LAWSummary This paper presents views on the role played by Roman Law as a factor in creating the roots of international law which developed within the English legal doctrine from the 16,h to the 19th century. In addition, it exemplifies applications of the institutions of Roman law in international legal practice. The general theory discounts the influence of Roman law on the British system of law. This, however, should be reviewed, as the evidence shows that Roman law has always played a vital role in the English legal system (e. g. Courts of Chancery, Admiralty, Constable and Marshall, Ecclesiastical Courts, Doctors’ Commons organisation). The Roman influences on the doctrine of English international law (Gentilis, Zouche, Duck, Wiseman, Westlake, Maine, Phillimore) indicate a positive, or even enthusiastic attitude towards the use of Roman law as a source of international law. One of the public branches where English practitioners and theorists of civil law could always find employment was in HM Foreign Service, which had a strong need for lawyers qualified in Roman law who were often educated and trained at English universities.One of the earliest authors describing the use of the theory and practice of Roman law in international law was Alberigo Gentili. Although he was Italian, his professional life and career was bound to England as both a Regius Professor at Oxford University and as a legal counsellor for the Privy Council. He gained much prominence and his works on international law, De Jure Belli, De Legationibus and Advocationis Hispanicae have become frequently quoted in the theory of international law. Another Oxford Regius Professor, and a judge in the Admiralty Court, Sir Richard Zouche, together with Gentili and Grotius, is regarded as the father of international law. Among his many works, Jus inter Gentes and Juris et Judicii Fecialis illustrate the influences of Roman law on the developing theory (and practice) of international law. The Roman ideas are particularly visible in Jus Inter Gentes, where Zouche had used the Roman systematic of status, dominium., delictum and judicium to classify and explain international law theory. Another 17th century civil lawyer, Sir Robert Wiseman, in The Excellency o f the Civil Law above all other Human Law glorifies the Roman law as universal law for all nations, applicable to many international debates. One of the most famous British civilians and international law experts, Sir Henry Maine considered the Roman law as an important resource and element of the 19th century doctrine of international law. According to Sir Robert Phillimore, the Roman law could be used in the controversies between independent States. As an example he described the cases between the USA and Spain concerning navigation in the Mississipi River, boundary disputes and arbitration. He proposed application of the Roman law to numerous cases concerning overseas properties.Apart from theory, hundreds of international cases bear traces of successful application of the Roman law to resolve situations when there was no actual law institution to bridge the legal divide. This paper presents five international cases in which an important role was played by Roman law. Arbitration of the Behring Sea dispute in 1893, where the UK and the USA argued about the UK’s right to hunt seals outside the three miles boundary area of the Pribilof s Isles. Both sides used arguments based on Roman law. The Americans view was that seals born on the isles would always return to the shore, not losing animus revertendi of Roman law, thus not becoming res nullius and not subject to „occupation” by the UK fishermen. The British delegates claimed that the seals were born ferae naturae (another Roman law category), and so everyone should be entitled to hunt them.The Alaskan Boundary Tribunal proceedings of 1903 declared that Roman law rules, as a source of international law, should take precedence over the rules of common law.During the Venezuelan arbitration before the Hague Tribunal in 1903, the opponents dealt with many Roman law institutes (like pignus> hypotheca, cessio bonorum, negotiorum gestio and others), trying to adjust them to their actual position.In 1910 the Arbitration Tribunal concerning fishing on the North Atlantic coast allowed the Roman definition of servitude and attempted to treat a state’s territory as a Roman property.The last case dealt with in the paper is the famous Indian Oil Corp. Ltd v. Greenstone Shipping dispute of 1987. The British judge applied the Roman law of confusioy declaring that no previous common law precedent was applicable to this case in which crude oil had been accidentally mixed on board the tanker.Taking into consideration these examples, one may draw the conclusion that Roman law has been an inspiration for European lawyers, as well as English common lawyers, in both the theory and practice of international law.

Настоящая работа является первым общим описанием на русском языке двух некрополей Кампокиаро (Кампобассо, Италия) – Виченне и Морионе, датируемых последней третью VII в. – началом VIII в. Культурное содержание некрополей показывает прочные связи с населением центральноазиатского происхождения. Важнейшим признаком некрополей являются захоронения с конем, соответствующие евразийскому кочевому погребальному обряду. Автор поддержал выводы европейских исследователей о том, что с большой долей вероятности некрополи оставлены булгарами дукса–гаштальда Алзеко, зафиксированными Павлом Диаконом в VIII в. на территориях Бояно, Сепино и Изернии. Аналогии некрополей Кампокиаро с погребениями Аварского каганата показывают присутствие в аварском обществе булгар со схожим погребальным обрядом. Из тысяч погребений с конем, оставленных аварским населением, булгарам могла принадлежать большая часть. Авары и булгары составляли основу и правящую верхушку каганата. Народ Алзеко являлся той частью булгар, которая в 631 г. боролась за каганский престол, что указывает на высокое положение булгар и их большое количество. После поражения эта группа булгар мигрировала последовательно в Баварию, Карантанию и Италию. Несколько десятков лет проживания в венедской, а затем в лангобардской и романской среде привели к гетерогенности погребального инвентаря, но не изменили сам обряд. Булгары лангобардского королевства составляли новый военный слой, который представлял из себя профессиональную кавалерию, получивший землю. La historiografía sobre fortificaciones medievales en el ámbito medieval cristiano es tan amplia como dispersa. Abundan los estudios de carácter local abordados con metodologías y desde disciplinas diversas, empezando por los clásicos trabajos de Historia del Arte e Historia de la Arquitectura, y, por supuesto, los de contenido estrictamente histórico, planteados desde el estudio de las fuentes escritas y, más recientemente, desde la Arqueología. Faltan, no obstante, estudios de conjunto y aunque se ha abordado el tema de la conceptualización y clasificación tipológica de estas fortalezas, creemos que sigue siendo una asignatura pendiente en el ámbito de la castellología. El presente trabajo pretende pues abordar la problemática sobre la definición y límites del castillo medieval, para pasar después a plantear una clasificación tipológica y funcional de los castillos cristianos peninsulares, para lo cual tendremos en cuenta no sólo la producción historiográfica reciente, sino también nuestras propias investigaciones de base fundamentalmente arqueológica. There is an abundance of local studies undertaken employing different methodologies, starting with the History of Art, the History of Architecture and, of course, those of strictly historical content, based on the study of written sources and, more recently, on Archaeology. However, there is a lack of comprehensive studies and, although the problem of the conceptualisation and typological classification of these fortresses has been addressed, I believe that this continues to be an unresolved issue in the field of castellology. This article aims to address the problem of the definition and limits of the medieval castle, and then propose a typological and functional classification of peninsular Christian castles, taking into account not only recent historiographical production but also my own archaeological research. Riassunto Il complesso e intrecciato rapporto tra impero, papato e Regnum Italicum, che aveva segnato la storia altomedievale a partire dalla notte di natale dell’800, subì un notevole cambiamento con l’incoronazione a imperatore di Ottone I. Mentre sotto i suoi predecessori il regno d’Italia e l’impero avevano continuato a essere due entità autonome, ora si creò un collegamento diretto tra essi. Ottone I pose il Regnum Italicum sotto il suo dominio imperiale (senza chiamarsi Re d’Italia, come aveva invece fatto ancora Carlo Magno), e durante la sua terza campagna d’Italia cercò di spingersi verso l’Italia meridionale. L’Italia, diventata in tal modo centro del suo dominio, forse era assorto per l’imperatore a simbolo della tanto ambita parità con Bisanzio che il matrimonio di Ottone II con una principessa bizantina avrebbe reso palese. Un titolo onorifico che in fondo non aveva comportato nessuna reale crescita di potere, né un legame con un territorio, si era trasformato in un motivo per chiedere il dominio sul territorio italiano, inteso di conseguenza non più come un regnum tra gli altri, ma come nucleo centrale di un impero. Rispetto ai suoi diretti predecessori sul trono imperiale, anche i suoi rapporti con la Sede Apostolica erano molto più condizionati dalla rivendicazione di supremazia e ricordano le tendenze presenti ai tempi di Carlo Magno.

The article offers insights on the reception and cultural transmission of one of the most important Renaissance texts entitled De Europa written by Aeneas Silvius Piccolomini, an Italian scholar (he became Pope Pius II in 1458). His work was adopted and adapted by the Polish scholar Jan of Stobnica. In his dissertation Introductio in Ptolemaei cosmographiam cum longitudinibus et latitudinibus regionum et civitatum celebriorum, he took up all issues of Piccolomini`s treatise, including geographical and historical aspects of Greece. His attitude to this material was very positive. The article considers the motifs of Greek districts, such as Macedonia, Thessaly, Boeotia, Attica, the Peloponnese, the Isthmus, Achaea, Acarnania, Epirus, and the significance of Greece for Polish Renaissance culture.

Na passagem do latim para as línguas românicas, sequências de consoantes adjacentes formadas por obstruintes (C1C2) no interior de palavras foram modificadas por meio de três processos fonológicos: vocalização (<em>lacte</em> &gt; leite, <em>palpare</em> &gt; poupar), assimilação (<em>factu</em> &gt; fatto, <em>domnu</em> &gt; dono) e apagamento (<em>pigmenta</em> &gt; pimenta, <em>subterrare</em> &gt; soterrar). Esses processos criaram novos elementos nas línguas, como o ditongo “ei” no português (<em>conceptu</em> &gt; conceito, <em>regnu</em> &gt; reino, <em>factu</em> &gt; feito), o ditongo “ui”, no francês (<em>fructa</em> &gt; <em>fruit</em>). No italiano, houve o surgimento de geminadas (<em>fructa</em> &gt; <em>frutta</em>, <em>septe</em> &gt; <em>sette</em>) e, no espanhol, a criação de africadas (<em>strictu</em> &gt; <em>estrecho</em>), entre outros casos. A instabilidade das CC parece estar operante nos dias atuais. No espanhol chileno falado, há casos de semivocalização, como em “adquirir/a[j]quirir” e “absurdo/a[w]surdo”. No espanhol peninsular do centro-norte, há fricatização de oclusivas sonoras, como em “ritmo/ri[T]mo”, por exemplo. No português, há casos de variação entre presença e ausência da consoante C1, dicionarizados atualmente, como “respectiva~<em>respetiva</em>”, por exemplo, e de situações, na língua falada, de aplicação de uma epêntese vocálica, separando as duas consoantes em diferentes sílabas (rá.pi.to). A história do português mostra que o processo de simplificação de CC não agiu uniformemente em todas as palavras. Algumas dessas mantiveram a sequência de consoantes, como em “óbvio”, “técnica”, “admirar”, “amnésia”, “afta” etc. Outras perderam a primeira consoante da sequência, como em sinal (<em>signale</em>) e em fato (<em>factum</em>), por exemplo. Apesar de algumas dessas consoantes desaparecerem na forma primitiva, mantiveram-se em palavras derivadas, como é o caso de pigmentação. Na história da língua, registram-se variações de grafia de palavras com a presença e a ausência dessas consoantes, evidenciando flutuações e instabilidade. Casos como “<em>assignatura</em>~assinatura”. “<em>subtil</em>~sutil” e “corrupto~<em>corruto</em>”, entre outros, são comuns na escrita do português desde muitos anos. Com base na associação entre o exame grafológico em jornais do século XIX, produzidos no Brasil, em análises de sequências de obstruintes na teoria fonológica e no uso destas na língua falada, este trabalho procurará observar que sequência de obstruinte medial é mais produtiva e se a permanência dessa sequência encontra algum respaldo na estrutura fonológica do português brasileiro. Os resultados mostram que diferentes sincronias (passado e presente) e abordagens de estudo da língua (escrita e falada) podem se coadunar para explicarem formas variáveis na língua, conforme os pressupostos metodológicos da Sociolinguística Quantitativa e da Teoria Fonológica.
