Abstract:
"Urbanism and its alter: race, culture and the city in Brazil (1920-1945)" Abstract: This paper deals with some important sources of the social thought in Brazil as they refer to the formation of the urban space in the country, particularly in respect to racial, ethnic, and cultural relations in the city. It raises the hypothesis that the urbanistic discourse, from the 1920s onwards, finds in eugenics and regionalism some reliable basis for the nationalistic realignment of its technical intervention in complexly divided urban spaces and cultures. Having in mind the contemporary question of urban renovation, it specially examines matters of social segregation, spatial distribution and cultural identification of ethnic, national and regional groups in some writings of Oliveira Vianna, Gilberto Freyre, José Mariano Filho, Donald Pierson and Samuel Lowrie. Keywords: urbanism; city; nation; Brazilian social thought; racial relationships; ethnicity; eugenics; culturalism; regionalism.

Abstract:
The article deals with the concept of regionalism including it in the dialogue between architectural culture and alpine world through an interdisciplinary perspective. As a result of historical processes of interaction with external cultural, social and economic situations, the Alps look as a mosaic of identities with an evasive and discontinuous contour. This has encouraged the segmentation of approaches to read them and the increase of the geographies, through regionalism, has tried to reconstruct the logic and coherence of this space. In the second half of last century, the criticism to the regionalist paradigm has led to a new view of the region that can find new perspectives in the regionalism as a space of governance of the territory. Through regionalism, the contemporary alpine architecture brings up the complex network of cultural circulation and government and political systems. The architectural culture stands as a medium of comprehension of the territory as an expression of values, awareness and common and shared practices. In this perspective, regionalism reflects the cultures and the needs of living in the mountains. At the same time the culture of construction needs the participation of a civil society aware of the values of inclusion and belonging; in other words a society that, through culture, expresses awareness and common and shared practices; in other words its regionalism.

Abstract:
Research into the globalisation processes leads to establishing the set of concepts with the relative heuristic, methodological, and theoretical effectiveness as well as consequent practical effectiveness. Yet, a simple analysis shows this set of concepts as dependent on certain political programmes and projects. Scientific research is not a prirori limited by any other language – except its own, i.e. scientific language. To accept the language of non-scientific discourse means (mostly) to accept the non-scientific logic, too. Scientific establishment of region, community or similar social unit is a matter of logic different from the logic of political programmes or projects. Scientific research seeks logic of a subject (region, e.g.) from outside as well as from inside. That is why ideas and principles of social constructivism would have to play an important role among the scientific research tools. These principles and ideas are not a part of simple language and logic of political programmes and projects. Substitution of scientific language and scientific logic by political ones could lead to a fatal error. A region is the result of social construction, yet the scientific construct of a region is only one dimension of this complex process. This process can be called a social and cultural cartography process and could be based on parallel or complementary research methodologies – on standard methodology (working by means of standard descriptive and analytical quantitative research tools) and on social constructivism methodology (social and cultural cartography). Such complementary research is capable of overcoming relatively naive language and logic of political programmes and projects as well as limited heuristic possibilities of a standard scientific approach.

Abstract:
As regionalism has become a politically and economically advantageous policy across much of Asia, vernacular popular music has concomitantly become an important arena for articulating and codifying shared regionalist sentiment. This article explores the reasons for the emergence of subnational regionalism within post-independence India, and its more recent resurgence since the 1990s, arguing that expansion and diversification of popular music (in combination with other media) industries have been central to these processes. Examining the case of the protest song “Nauchami Narayana” from the Uttarakhand Himalayas, the article then investigates how vernacular popular music can blend local signs of devotion and cultural identity in order to effect political change and articulate a space of regional belonging.

Abstract:
This essay examines the limits and possibilities of the mid-century broadcasting field in Northern Ireland, by attending to the dynamic interplay at the BBC's Belfast station of three competing regional formations: the political regionalism of the Northern Irish state; the cultural regionalism of a coterie of Northern Irish writers and intellectuals; and the broadcasting regionalism instituted as part of the BBC's policy of national programming. These contrary regionalisms each had different and, at times, competing criteria for what constituted particular and typical details of life in the North, and broadcasters had to negotiate the inexact correspondences among them with ears tuned to the political relations triangulated by Belfast, Dublin, and London. Beginning with a consideration of how broadcasters in Northern Ireland produced forms of mediated actuality both in and beyond the studio, the essay concludes with Sam Hanna Bell's This is Northern Ireland (1949), a feature that explores the tension of overspill and containment effected less by the partition of Ireland than by the contradictions inherent to the broadcasting field.

Abstract:
At the end of the XX - beginning of the XXI centuries, regionalist parties have become reputable and influential political players in the European political landscape, however, the unevenness of their development in the cross-regional dimension raises the question of the factors that impact their success. The article aims to test the hypothesis developed in previous works based on other empirical data and using different ways of operationalizing variables. The study is carried out by the method of multiple linear regression on the empirical material of all 313 administrative-territorial units of European countries that fully correspond to the concept of "region". As a result of the analysis, it was found that the socio-cultural and historical specificity of the region has the most stable influence on the success of regionalist parties, while the socio-cultural one is of utmost importance. The level of economic development of the region is also statistically significant, but its effects are multidirectional. In the countries of "old" Europe, more developed regions tend to have regionalism, while in "new" Europe, on the contrary, regionalist parties are more successful in underdeveloped regions. The hypothesis regarding the positive impact of decentralization on the development of regionalist parties is not confirmed.

Abstract:
AbstractThis essay assesses the role of regionalism in interwar Austrian painting with a focus on the Tyrolean painter and architect Alfons Walde (1891–1958). At a time when painting was seen to be in crisis, eclipsed by the deaths of prominent Viennese artists such as Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele, regionalism offered an alternative engagement with modern art. As the representative of a wider regionalist movement, Walde paved the way for a clearly identifiable image of rural Austria without foregoing the modernization process that took place in the Alps at the time. Filtering essential elements of local culture and synthesizing them with both a modern formal language and “modern” topics, most significantly ski tourism, he created a regionalism that reverberated beyond the narrow confines of his home province and caught particular momentum during the rise of the Austrian Ständestaat in the 1930s. Moving in between regional and national significance, Walde's work underlines the essential position of the region in Austria after 1918 and conveys that an engaged regionalism that responded to the rapid cultural and political changes taking place became a significant aspect of interwar Austrian painting.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
The progress of the practice and the debate on architecture in the Alpine region of Trentino, in the last fifty years, has been characterised by a pivotal role of the Autonomous Province, the local authority with key competencies in environmental matters and spatial organisation, on the one hand, and by the experimentation and the promotion of discussion events on architecture, on the other. In the Sixties, spatial planning was conceived as a key instrument to support the development of a mountain province. Change was the perspective, and this required the activation of landscape control procedures centred on the control of the quality of architectural projects. This was not enough to qualify the professional practice, although some architects were able to propose innovative projects and began to animate the cultural debate, to establish supra-local relationships and to consolidate the awareness of the role of the architectural project. The contributions proposed are aimed at critically examine such issues, with a particular focus on the experience of institutions such as the “Scuola per il Governo del Territorio e del Paesaggio” within the Trentino School of Management, the “Osservatorio per il Paesaggio” within the Autonomous Province and the “Circolo Trentino Architettura Contemporanea”. Factors that led a decisive evolution of the spatial planning framework in the last decade, characterised by a new attention to the landscape and to the quality of architectural design, thanks to cultural initiatives, occasions of debate, and training paths.

The dialectical cycles of expansion/contraction of capitalism in the Amazon during the twentieth century have left indelible marks on the cultural and social sphere. The rubber period was one of the most significant moments of this process, the economic values transacted in the apogee of rubber exploration turned Manaus and Belém in modern urban centers, equipped with infrastructure services that would come later to other Brazilian cities. The short time between the peak and decline of the rubber extraction was marked by a vigorous intellectual production, ranging from an optimistic view about the future of the region to the pessimism of the Amazon abandonment by the public power of the Union. Born in 1928, Leandro Tocantins, sought to understand the social change processes that led to the decline of the regional economy and at the same time signals a political strategy to put the region on the national political agenda. His intellectual production and political action moved gradually from the national developmentalism for the conservative modernization. In this sense, the concept of tradition and modernity in his thinking is intimately articulated to the intellectual role he played in the organization and direction of cultural, regional and national living.

This dissertation aims to demonstrate that S?o Paulo State?s urban history was surrounded, from the beginning, by the imprecision between the urban and rural environments, especially in the mogiana region, which spawned a rural urbanity apart from the administrative limits and strongly related to Minas Gerais. This way, it relativizes the civilization?s approaches, presenting shards of a road network and spread preexistent neighborhoods, deeply related to the natural landscape, structured according the way of life and imagination of their inhabitants and where ideas and goods that supplied the internal market traveled. At the same time, they worked as communication channels with areas already considered urbanized, from where came diluted influences built from the diversity of beings and ways. This culturally diverse landscape shaped a perception of the urban environment compatible to the existing rural way of life and adapted to the reality and possibilities of the rural population. Therefore, the cultural landscape was the base for the insertion of the administrative network then consolidated the modern regional territoriality. Like stacked layers, intersection and detachment moments are observed, influenced by the encounters, conflicts, dialogs, resistances and redeterminations of the landscape itself and the network. The failure in immediately complying with an external urbanizing model, makes this process peculiar, consistent with the local culture and detached from the belle ?poque concept. This regionalist urbanity kept rustic cultural aspects that justified its spatial features and the organization method of the society around communities, where the production and genealogy defined them as groups. Under this scenario, urban cores presented themselves as places of political representativeness, linking the region to the capital of S?o Paulo, while converting it in a metropolis. This administratively fragmented cultural landscape between S?o Paulo and Minas Gerais territories was kept until late 19th century and the industrialization process, that began during the 20th century, was a milestone on the frontier definitions.

The present study has as object of analysis the young musical groups of the city of João Pessoa, that are fit into the musical gender MPB neo-regionalist, which articulate elements of the traditional musicality of the Northeast area with rhythms and languages of musical genres considered universal. The research had as objective to analyze the image of Northeast that is built over the musical production of those groups. That production is characterized by the hybridization of rhythms and timbers of the traditional musicality, with elements of a globalized culture, like, for instance, the use of electronic instruments and rhythms as jazz, rock, funk, reggae and ska. The theoretical-methodological way that was used was inspired by the Cultural Studies and by some elements of the Semiotics. The research demonstrated that those groups are building a new image of the Northeast area, that follows the contemporary articulations among the Northeast, Brazil and the New World Economical Order, likewise the intensified tourist flows. The contemporary musical scene of the city was characterized as well as the dialogues that the current groups establish with traditional icons of the regional music. also, The new forms of production and musical circulation of the city were emphasized in addition to the performance of the significant cultural agents, like the representatives of the State and SEBRAE. It was observed the consolidation of a neo-regional musical gender, that builds an image of the Northeast which comes out as a hybridized place, a mix of tradition and modernity, that is also a place of ambiguities involving poverty and violence living side by side with wealth, culture and exuberant nature.

This research refers to the artistic and cultural production of Cornelius Pires (1884-1958) and the historical context of the country from the effects of colonization in the socio-economic and cultural, the presence of different ethnic groups and their inter-relations that have contributed to the formation of the regional culture paulista, the rustic. This background is relevant in the light of the stigmas attached to the rustics in view of "poverty" of São Paulo and its inhabitants by the end of the nineteenth century compared to other national locations and the downside of these distorted views with the resumption of popular culture on the part of intellectuals and artists by means of movements such as regionalism and the Modernism in search of a possible national identity. The justifications of these questions relate to historical tension that exists between popular culture and erudite culture and in the mediation of these two notions the contribution of laughter, humor as a way to smoothen the communication and insertion of the popular space in hegemonic society. Thus did Cornelius Pires, with his style facing the rural theme plus the humor in its production and penetrated hegemonic spaces allowing communication between the antagonisms present in our society such as: rural and urban, tradition and modernity, popular and erudite

Abstract:
This thesis proposes a Marine Museum in Callao, based on the potential for spreading the biological and marine culture of Peru. The justification for a marine museum has as its main element the ability of this typology to transmit culture. And through this ability reintegrate a community with its historical past. Creating a link between the users of the community and the city in which it is located, generating a positive social impact within the museum's range of action. However, it is not limited to an act in the cultural-social sphere of the users who receive it. Because, thanks to the scale in which it works and the uses that this typology gathers, it is capable of generating a tourist pole with a positive economic impact for the region in which it is located. The place chosen for the location of the Marine Museum is Callao. Due to 4 factors: its geography at 0 masl, the identity of the Chalaco citizens that relates to marine activities, the tourist potential of Callao and the concentration of activities related to the trade of the sea in Callao. Another important point is the presence of the historic center, which complements the cultural character of the museum, which proposes a future of tourist and cultural regeneration in this sector of Callao.

This dissertation aims at presenting views of Brazilian Northeast and development thrown an analysis of movies about Northeast and the dialogue with historical context in which they are inserted. The analyzed movies were: Barren Lifes (1963), God and the Devil in the Land of the Sun (1964), A Dog‟s will (2000) and Too Much Brazil (2000). Initially, we considered Northeast as an unit. Nevertheless, the Northeast has an unique plurality, as seen in works of Freyre (1946) and Canclini (2008). The movies analyzed from a film analysis methodology expressed by Morettin (2007) portrait: this multiplicity; the theoretical discussions in their Brazilian historical context from the beginning of twentieth century; the effervescent discussions about nationalism; and regionalism that Oliven (2000), Freyre (1976) and Albuquerque Jr. (2006 and 2007) present and that will influent the written compositions in which the movies were inspired by. The movies analysis was made from the following categories: people-government relation, cangaço, coronelismo, landscape and religiosity. After the analysis we found multiple views of Brazilian Northeast which survive and reinvent themselves in time.

Abstract:
The concern with a notion of culture that contribute to the definition of a Brazilian cultural identity has guided many studies since the 1920s in Brazil. The northeastern region, for having expressive popular manifestations, is considered by many researchers the place of emergence of this culture. From this premise that authors like Gilberto Freyre and Ariano Suassuna have developed an entire ideology that sought to preserve what they considered to be the essence of this culture. Therefore, much of the cultural production of the region was influenced by this notion that aimed to, in the search for elements of popular culture, the production of a high culture. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Recife was still with an unstable social and economic framework, which allied to the dissatisfaction with this traditionalist view of culture, turned out to contributing to the emergence of the movement called Manguebeat. In that sense, this work propose to examine the relationship established in the cultural scene of Pernambuco in the 1990s between the movement Armorial and the movement Manguebeat , taking as principle that an opposition between established and outsiders settled there at that time. From the concepts developed by Norbert Elias in his book The Established and the Outsiders and the \"field\" concepts developed by Bourdieu in several of his works, we will cover how the hybridity of Manguebeat place it in that scene and how this feature provides elements that allows subverting the established order by Armorial movement.

Abstract:
Lambayeque is a northern department that is characterized by its ancestral culture. The Sicán civilization developed there, and therefore, inherited a tradition of craftsmanship that continues to develop today. However, there is not an adequate equipment to exhibit and commercialize handicrafts. Also, the deficient distribution and location of centers of artisan sale has caused the devaluation of this activity. On the other hand, the artisans of Lambayeque are affected by the rains of the Niño Costero which has caused the loss of their workshops, work tools and access to raw materials. According to the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism of Perú (MINCETUR), 266 artisans were affected in the region .Therefore, the state is developing a containment and investment plan for the recovery of their workplaces. Likewise, in Lambayeque there are 3 993 artisans written in the National Registry of the Artisan this means that the activity is profitable and it is the sustenance of many families. Therefore, this research is based on the study of the markets of artisan production in order to determine the adequate functioning and design, since most of them are spaces that have been adapted for this activity. Jointly applying the principles of Regionalist Architecture for the integration and architectural interpretation of Lambayeque, the development of a cultural market will be achieved.

Abstract:
Abstract: The contents of an unpublished letter (FLC I1-17-5), sent to Le Corbusier from the Basses-Pyrénées during the development of the Villa Ocampo project (1928), is the key to understanding the Swiss-French master’s particular response to the site at the end of the 1920s. Countess Adela Cuevas de Vera, who negotiated the project from Anglet, revealed the Côte Basque as an attractive new market and claimed Le Corbusier's presence there. Furthermore, she reminded him of the prevailing regionalism and the strong cultural identity of the place, as well as the fact that Robert Mallet-Stevens, a great competitor of his, had already embarked there. Whatever the content of this letter awakened in Le Corbusier, led him to submit a very similar version of the third Villa Meyer project (1925) (designed for Paris) to be built in Buenos Aires. This paper re-evaluates the reasons behind a site exchange between two Southern cities on different sides of the Atlantic, studying the role of the negotiation site in the design process; and reassesses Le Corbusier’s critical attitude towards regionalism, mapping out his relationship with a French region in which he never intervened. Through primary source research, this paper also recognizes that in architecture, rivalry, pride and ambition can quite often be authentic triggers for action. Abstract:

Abstract:
