This work is a study of universalism concepts and literary regionalism and its implications in the study of Novel. The novelistic narratives have often been categorized either as regionalist, or as universal. However, this classification is usually made arbitrarily, since the basis under which these concepts are applied are not consistent, which paves the way for the claim that these are used exclusively with marginalization purposes of certain literary manifestations. On this, the research seeks to establish other ways in which the local and the universal can be thought of in the novel, making use of the opportunities provided by the reflections of the French philosopher Paul Ricoeur about the narrative which allow us to think the novel as having dimensions that include both private as universalizing aspects of the plot. In order to check the consistency of the analysis, the study will turn to the literary works Relato de um certo Oriente, by Milton Hatoum, Beiradão, by Alvaro Maia, and Galvez Imperador do Acre by Márcio de Souza, that, wheter they have been compiled by authors from outside the major centers, they have elements that allow align them to the general panorama of the novel, while guarding features that approximate their original context of accomplishment.

Abstract:

It was published in booklet form periodically in the Official State of Goiás observed that this literature was made for a specific purpose, since the author was active in the Brazilian Communist Party, reflecting its ideals in such work. The work is supported theoretically in Cultural History, which enables to use literature as a source of historical research. In the first chapter we demonstrate how the historian can use literature as a document; as some writers have become regionalist, do a quick story about how it came to literature engaged. In the second, expose briefly the life and works of Bernardo Elis, as well as their engagement in PCB reflected in the literature they produced. In the final chapter, we make a possible intersection between literature as "fiction" and its power of symbolization of the historical reality of the struggle for land.

"Translators' and target readers' reconstruction of regionalism in Taiwan's regional prose literature." Thesis, University of Newcastle Upon Tyne, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10443/1457.

Full text
Abstract:
The object of this research is to investigate the dynamic nature of identity construction of a regional place in English translations. The study focuses on the analysis of Wang Zhenhe’s works in translation. The Regional Prose Literature of Taiwan was developed when writers began to examine their identity and sense of belonging under Japanese colonization (1895-1945) and later the rule of the Nationalist government under Martial Law (1949-1987) by using narrative and descriptive prose as a vehicle for presenting the distinctiveness of the island. The dialects, the colonial language, local customs and scenes which regional writers created in their stories brought out what they saw as the uniqueness of Taiwan identity. However, Taiwan, like Hong Kong, has been categorized by many scholars as part of the Han-Chinese-influenced region, which shares the same cultural identity. Translating Taiwan, therefore, depends on how a translator understands and (re)constructs its cultural and political discourse in translation. This thesis uses a cognitive-pragmatic model (CPM) to describe how a translation of regional prose literature communicates to readers of the target culture. The CPM in translation studies looks at translation from the aspects of literary communication and the comprehension process. It enables the researcher (1) to study the textual signals of a place which readers used to construct the text of the source cultural world; (2) to examine how these signals were conveyed in the target text; (3) to study the likely effects on specific readers who have little or no knowledge of the source text culture. The major finding of this study is that communication through translated literature depends not only on the translator’s roles as a reader and a rewriter, but also on target readers’ processing effort and literary competence. Textual analysis shows that the translators’ decisions on conveying regional signals in translations often affect readers’ comprehension of the target text (TT). When the translation is too literal and the cultural signal is unfamiliar to the target readers, those who have little or no knowledge of Taiwan have more difficulties understanding the text. Reader response studies also show that the use of footnotes in the literary translation is not always unacceptable by the readers when specific regional elements are preserved in the TT. Target readers’ reception of cultural signals relies firstly on their existing knowledge and secondly on the information they receive from the translation. Effective communication therefore results from a translator’s assumption of target readers’ schemas and efforts in making the translation comprehensible and coherent, especially when there are regional elements in the translation.

Abstract: This research examines the relationships between the brazilian literature and its historical context, from de the book Dois irmãos, by Milton Hatoum, an important contemporary writer. Especially in the twentieth century, beginning of the novel, brazilian society started a process of industrialization which apparently broke the country in modern and archaic regions, giving rise to the brazilian dualism. The trajectory of the twin brothers Yaqub and Omar, from a lebanese family in Manaus, exemplifies the allegory of brazilian dualism and uneven development, especially since the 1950s. The novel is narrated by Nael, son of the servant of the house with one of the brothers, which reconstructs the history of that family from their memories. Through this Hatoum's novel this work proposes an analysis of Brazilian society from its characteristics and contradictions

Abstract:

Some elements of historical and cultural reality, identified in fiction about the State of Rio Grande do Sul, have contributed and still contribute to the construction of a social imaginary and of a regional identity, whether in representations of the environment in which the narrative takes place or in the language used by the writer. On the assumption that the writer’s lexical choices are relevant factors to setting the historical context of a given season, this paper aims to examine the relation between the lexicon of the novel called “The House of Seven Women”, by Leticia Wierzchowski (2002) and regional culture. To achieve these goals, this dissertation develops a lexical-semantic analysis of the representation of the historicalcultural and social characteristics of Rio Grande do Sul from the selection of lexias, organized into lexical fields according to Coseriu's theory (1979). As theoretical contribution it was used the lexical studies, Lexicology, Lexicography and Terminology, emphasizing the lexicon related to culture and regional aspects.

Cattle, Graham. "Other Englands: Regionalism in Shakespeare's first historical tetralogy." Thesis, Edith Cowan University, Research Online, Perth, Western Australia, 1999. https://ro.ecu.edu.au/theses/1217.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation examines the representation of England in the plays of the first tetralogy. Arguing that a large number of studies of Shakespearian drama have tended to gloss over the inherent differences within the English nation. I suggest that regionalism and regional identity play a pivotal role in Shakespeare's dramatisation of English history from the accession of Henry VI to the death of Richard Ill. In this thesis I propose that the first tetralogy is not only a representation of the past, but an expression of the political, cultural and geographical divisions within England during the period of the plays first production. While Shakespeare's first tetralogy forms part of an interconnecting discourse of nationhood -- contributing to what has been termed the discovery of England -- I explore how the plays also serve to highlight the extent to which regionalism and regional diversity remained powerful factors within English society. By drawing attention to the proliferation of geographical references in the tetralogy, I discuss how the localisation of scenes and the identification of characters with specific places represents an encounter with the kingdom beyond the confines of the theatre. In a series of plays that appear to be principally concerned with the struggle between rival dynasties for control of the realm, the various regional references can be read as the site of competing voices and sectional interests: an acknowledgment of not one England, but various other Englands. While the image of the regional world in these plays is largely informed by the chronicle sources, this study considers how Shakespeare's fashioning of regional identity was governed by the need for Elizabethan acting companies to secure and maintain the protection of powerful and influential patrons, by censorship, company rivalry, and the demands placed on theatre companies by touring. With this in mind, I argue that the manner in which certain characters and regions are presented in the tetralogy is an indication that these plays may have been performed throughout England. After a theoretical overview, chapter one presents an examination of regionalism as a social, cultural, political and economic phenomenon in early modem England. It is followed by a discussion of the various ways in which a sense of place was projected on the Elizabethan stage. Appropriating William Harrison's division of the late Tudor kingdom into four distinct provinces, this dissertation interrogates the role and representation in the first tetralogy of the area south of the Thames (chapter two), the midlands (chapter three), Wales and the English border counties (chapter four), and northern England (chapter five).

Abstract: In the Brazilian History of Literature, the 1930s are known not only as a decade of a vast number of novels published, but also as a period when the writers were concerned about politics and the aesthetic innovations of 1922's Brazilian Modernism. Via a more general study on the fictional character, element in which it is possible to realize the dilemma between representation and creation - one of the greatest issues to 30's novelists -, this master thesis aims to compare the role of the female characters in both canonical and non-canonical novels of that time. From the first group we analyzed Menino de Engenho, O Quinze; Capitães da areia and Vidas Secas, from the second Paracoera, Rua do Siriry, Três Sargentos and Badú

Abrams, Sean Michael. "My Ántonia and Willa Cather's Reciprocal Regionalism and W.T. Benda's Illustrations." ScholarWorks @ UVM, 2016. http://scholarworks.uvm.edu/graddis/530.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores regionalism as a fictional genre and Willa Cather's experimentations and innovations in her 1918 novel My Ántonia. In it I argue that Cather employs what I will be calling reciprocal regionalism, which expands upon the regionalist relationship between the land and the characters in the story. In My Ántonia and later novels of Cather's, reciprocal regionalism functions in how characters survive, prosper, or perish in the region; the relationship needs to be fluid and adaptable. Using regionalist criticism and close textual analysis of Willa Cather's novels, essays, and letters, I argue that Cather believes in an inherent essentialist relationship between the artist and the muse, the character, and the region. When the relationship falters and fails, the art and the character dies. Furthermore, Cather's commissioning of illustrations for the novel by W.T. Benda illustrate that the relationship between material and personal experience is foremost in truthful representation. This thesis aims to fill a gap in Cather criticism that has so far neglected in studying Cather's fourth novel My Ántonia as a regionalist text, while also exploring how Cather served as an intermediary and experimenter in a rather traditional female written form by questioning its place in the literary canon and revising it as a modernist author.

This dissertation, developed at the Research Line: Culture and Educational Processes Program of Graduate Studies in Education of the Federal University of Goias, addresses the issue of intrinsic relations between education, visual arts and literature. To develop it we chose a qualitative approach, similar to bibliographic research using methodological assumptions of the historical survey of art and culture of Goias in an aesthetic standpoint and also local. We analyzed Eli Brasiliense novels and works of Frei Nazareno Confaloni, looking for ideas about man and nature, the world of school, modern art, the popular religion, work and courage of the frontiersman and his connection to the land. For this analysis, we used the references of Barbosa, Candido, Palacin, Olives, Borges, Cavalcanti and Sabino Junior. In conclusion, it was realized that the culture, like possibility of education, goes beyond the art education of formal teaching, and yet the languages of literature and the visual arts are interrelated and are essential in human development.

Abstract:

This dissertation focuses on the representations of the female figure in Presença de Thalia (1989), by Ruth Laus, a writer from Santa Catarina, dialoguing and relating to issues inherent to the identity and the space of fictional representations of gender, the female subject as a producer of texts and fictional character, as well as evaluates the interference of patriarchal ideology present in the novel. To seek answers to the question of what is the feminine, the analysis of masculine and feminine, among other combinatorial possibilities, enables a critical view through research and analysis, on breaking, or not, the mythical model of patriarchy. Therefore, it is analyzed the regional setting and its cultural interrelations in the novel, first, from theoretical assumptions regarding the region and regionality; then, combined with the perspective of feminist criticism, are used as subsidies the studies of Showalter (1994) and the anthropologists Bruner (1986) and Geertz (1989), in order to, by focusing on the female authorship text, that is, her expression, regarding the evaluation of family court and social power structures established fictionally, to unveil the conceptual structures and interpret the culture's fictional web of symbols; and, finally, basing the discussions on representation, identity and subjectivity with the assumptions of Chartier (2002) and Weedon (2003), reveal how female subjects are conceived.

Abstract:
This research has as main focus the observation of land and of people from São Paulo as being the artistic point on Guilherme de Almeida\'s literature. It comprehends poet\'s reflections about the cultural identity of people and about the city itself, based on articles from the newspaper \"O Estado de S. Paulo\", by emphasizing the difference between the cosmopolitan and the traditionalist São Paulo. For that purpose is analyzed in his literary production after the Modernism movement and its esthetical and ideological transformation as well, and the strains revealed by that change are evidenced: the cosmopolitan and the traditionalist views, the author\'s concerns in understanding the people from Brazil by defining the people from São Paulo, and the introduction of author on a Bandeirante line and the creation of the Bandeirante mith.

Abstract:
This study calls for a re-evaluation of contemporary regionalist literary theory. It argues that traditional models of the discourse have been too heavily influenced by nineteenth century realist aesthetics and political ideologies. Because most scholars continue to interpret regionalist texts according to a resolutely empirical reading of geography, literary regionalism has fallen out of touch with the new kinds of "unrealistic," generic landscapes that now dominate North American culture in the postindustrial era. Drawing heavily on recent work by postmodern geographers such as Edward Soja, David Harvey, Michael Dear and Derek Gregory, this project updates regionalist theory by "re-placing" the artificially stabilized reading of geography that dominated the nineteenth century with a more self-consciously spatialized reading of what Soja calls our contemporary "real-and-imagined" places. By grafting together traditional regionalism and postmodern spatial theory we improve on both contributing discourses. In a "postmodern-regionalist" literary criticism, traditional regionalism sheds its reputation for theoretical naivete, while the elusive abstractions of postmodern theory gain a real-world referent, and a specific geographical index. When we "read postmodernism regionally" - - when we aggressively interrogate where this kind of fiction comes from and the places it represents - - we realize that the canons of postmodern fiction in Canada and the United States have been influenced by two very different spatial epistemologies. Rather than being "determined" by their real geographies, Canadian and American postmodernism have been more directly influenced by two different readings of geography. Works by Thomas Pynchon, Toni Morrison, and Don DeLillo demonstrate that American postmodernism often interprets social space according to what Henri Lefebvre calls the idealistic "the illusion of transparency," while texts by Canadian postmodernists such as Robert Kroetsch, Wayne Johnston and Guy Vanderhaeghe tend to fall under Lefebvre's more materialistic "illusion of opacity." The ambiguous figure of Douglas Coupland - - a Canadian writer most critics treat as an American - - puts the spatial conventions of postmodernism in both countries in sharp relief. In an American postmodernism, dominated by generic suburban settings, regions will almost always be seen as imaginary projections, while in a Canadian postmodernism, dominated by the Prairies, regions will almost always retain some sense of their material reality.

The present work consists in a research that turns around the meanings that the fictional space assumes in the Brazilian literature since its first manifestations and during colonial periods, until the third modernism's stage that corresponds to the generation of 45 that is inserted in the work of João Guimarães Rosa. In this sense, it is exposed a panoramic view of regionalism at Brazilian literature from the theoretical route presented by Antonio Candido that approaches the way how the fictional texts assume the space in its literal or symbolic dimension. In this last meaning, the range of the spatial focus incorporates proper elements from modernity as: the narrator, language and reader space. These elements are discussed in perspective of Rosa's work in a general way and more specifically in the short stories As margens da alegria e Os cimos, the first and last respectively from the book Primeiras estórias (1962). In the case of short stories, it is done a comparative analysis highlighting common aspects, notable in the structural composition; and differences evoked by the perception of childish character regarding space. The space is characterized as element that allows to conceive the immersion of the childish character as perceptive subject in a world socially shared. The character's displacement, as physical as internal, evokes the imagination and gives a sign to an existential learning. On the other hand, in the case of short story as genre, the narrative assumes an ambiguity associating fictional poetic and reality. Thus, it is also discussed aspects related to the production context of Guimarães Rosa's work, spatially linked to a more urban perspective, from a Brazil that had a strangeness of the modernization. The perception of the environment by the childish character emphasizes the study of fictional space in the short stories of Joao Guimarães Rosa.

This thesis analyses the short stories from Uma Terra Só (1984) and intends to verify how the motifs related to the bordering space are manifested in this book, considering them from the perspective of making of characters, fictional space, narrative voice and, mainly, of the subject matter. The culture, the language, the literature, the frontier man, the history of both sides of the border line which passes by Rio Grande do Sul state and Uruguay are elements which attest a limit, however, they do not demarcate it in a precise and clear-cut way. On the contrary, such aspects configure this territory as a cultural continuum . This work aims at studying this conception of the physical and social space as well as its evident relation with the aesthetic project which we find in the so called puebleros short stories by Aldyr Schlee.

Full text
Abstract:
"Matters of State: American Literature in the Civil Rights Era" argues that American writers engaged with the American civil rights movement as it unfolded by turning their attention to the state and the state's relationship to its subjects and by imagining new forms for both. Postwar American literary culture, then, understood racial inequality not solely as a problem of identity and difference, nor simply as an economic problem, but as a problem of formal citizenship. Between around 1948 and around 1968, that problem as such spurred diverse and unruly literary inquiries into a range of matters of state, each taken up in dialogue with American constitutional law and each also a meditation on the particular capacities of literary art as a site for political thinking. William Faulkner and Flannery O'Connor tried to reimagine the structure of federalism; James Baldwin and Harper Lee interrogated the real workings of democracy; Chester Himes and Sam Greenlee asked whether social movements ought to collaborate with the existing U.S. state in the first place; Norman Mailer, William Styron, Amiri Baraka, and others reoriented literary culture toward a new, post-civil-rights set of questions. Read as one archive, the novels and plays and essays that they produced tell a new story about American literature at midcentury: a story about literature's quasi-autonomous engagement with the political-theoretical questions that racial inequality had rendered urgent. They remind us of the complexity of history itself, and of the difficulty and uncertainty obscured by triumphalist narratives of democratic liberalism's inevitable civil-rights redemption. And they afford a glimpse into the kaleidoscopic legal worldmaking for which literary art in general can be an arena.

The embryonic ideas for this thesis began to form in two seminars I attended in 2000 while studying for a Masters at the University of Chicago. The first of these, W. J. T. Mitchell's 'Verbal and Visual Landscapes', must be given credit for introducing me to a short essay by Martin Heidegger entitled 'Die Kunst und der Raum' ('Art and Space'), which got me thinking about the 'special character' of space (Heidegger 1973: 4). In addition, Professor Mitchell's specific approach to landscape, that it should be considered as a verb rather than a noun, made me consider the ontological implications of the relationship between space and power that is witnessed both in and through landscape when approached as 'a process by which social and subjective identities are formed' (Mitchell 1994: 1).

Abstract:
The writer Virgilio Rodríguez Macal, through his essays, narratives, and journalistic chronicles, actively participated in the great debates about the fate of the Guatemalan nation during and after the socialist governments of the Revolution (1944-1954). This thesis delves into a neglected oeuvre the study of which sheds light on an original perspective about a national period with continental repercussions. I study his regionalist novels Carazamba (1953), Jinayá (1956) and Guayacán (1962) within the framework of Guatemala and Latin America’s intellectual, literary and socio-political history. This approach, in combination with a close textual analysis, allows me to show that Rodríguez Macal, with a firm footing in the Latin American lettered tradition of political commitment to the construction of the nation, propounds narrative worlds that amount to national integration programs centered around the northern region of the country. I demonstrate that Rodríguez Macal adopts a regionalist aesthetic to postulate a Guatemalan autochthonous essence based on the discourse of narrators who act as discerners of that same essence based on a scientific knowledge derived from disciplines such as anthropology, historiography and sociology. Lastly, I reveal that this literary project is the expression of an independent intellectual trajectory preoccupied with proposing alternative projects for the modernization and territorialization of the nation.

Abstract: Assuming that writers share the craft of writing, this work analyses the Cycle of sugar cane by José Lins do Rego and Time and wind by Erico Verissimo to investigate the production and circulation of ideas as region and regionalism. It is analyzed the publishers who gave them support for became professional writers. The work also rebuilds the debates around the region and regionalism produced in Pernambuco and Rio Grande do Sul establishing a repertoire of themes and problems common to both writers, despite being equated in different ways. The tension between particular and singular, between local, regional and national guides the study of the novels, investigating if region and regionalism structures the narrative and sense makes the connections between literary form and social process

Stengel, Julia. "Die ,globale Provinz' ? Der Globalisierungsdiskurs am Beispiel von Arnold Stadlers Roman Ein hinreissender Schrotthändler (1999) und Andreas Maiers Roman Klausen (2002)." Thesis, University of Waterloo, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10012/2815.

Abstract:
This thesis demonstrates how two literary works ? Arnold Stadler's Ein hinreissender Schrotthändler (1999) and Andreas Maier's Klausen (2002) ? can be read as part of the globalization discourse. As a theoretical basis for the textual analysis the thesis first develops an understanding of the concept of globalization which forms a background against which the two literary works can be read. By embedding literature into the sociological theories of globalization it is possible to examine to what extent the two novels reflect and/or generate particular aspects of globalization.

Both texts are set largely in provincial towns, and the regions themselves play commanding roles in the stories being told. This focus on the provincial takes on an ironic appearance in the era of globalization where one would assume that localities have lost meaning. It is therefore useful to look at theories that broach the issue of the tense relation between globality and locality. Since no universally accepted definition of globalization exists, it is necessary to establish the crucial aspects of the phenomenon to be applied in the analysis of the novels by examining the work of various theorists on the topic.

The prominent model of 'glocalization,' originated by the sociologist Roland Robertson to refer to 'global localization,' offers useful categories for the analysis of the provincial in the era of globalization. In this model the simultaneity of global and local processes is assumed and with it the alleged antagonism of the 'global' and the 'local' is overcome. Claiming those dynamics Robertson's model can serve as a confirmation of the arguments put forward in this thesis which looks at literature about the 'local' through the prism of globalization. Other theories relating to explicit local dynamics are presented to round out the model of 'glocalization. ' In addition, the thesis takes into account normative ideas regarding the province in the global era.

The textual analysis that follows the delineation of the model of 'glocalization' demonstrates how the novels illustrate the global and local processes postulated by the model. The investigation also explains how the literary texts themselves evaluate the provinces portrayed. The results of the examination show that selected aspects of the globalization discourse have found their way into two contemporary German-language novels and therefore into German literary discourse. Even though the two novels deal with different ideas from the discourse, and even reject to a certain extent some of these concepts, they each reveal a particular literary manner of echoing the processes of globalization. Finally, the thesis demonstrates that the globalization discourse is of use for the interpretation of literary texts.

Abstract: Rachel de Queiroz and Graciliano Ramos are writers who have many similarities between them: both are from the Northeast of Brazil and begin their fictional production in the 1930s, and were supporters of leftist ideologies, particularly communism, as well as good part of the intellectual community of that time. From these similarities, this paper proposes a comparison between some of the works of these writers, which are, respectively, O Quinze (1930) and Vidas Secas (1938), on the one hand, and João Miguel (1932) and Angústia (1936), on the other. Therefore, the two writers are situated in the face of literary criticism, and the importance of each to the study of Brazilian literature to the present is focalized. Upon careful examination of passages and similar themes in the works of the two writers, one can see that despite the many similarities between these works and their authors, they drifted apart in terms of effectiveness aesthetics in their novels. This observation is made by analyzing a particular element of fiction: the narrative focus. Thus, when analyzing the narrators of each of the novels, is the explicit difference between Rachel de Queiroz and Graciliano Ramos, and one came to the conclusion that Graciliano was able to achieve in his works, starting from the realities and issues that are very similar to Rachel, higher literary quality

Abstract:
Quebec knew a long tradition of regionalistic literature since the novel of the soil, tradition with which the writers of Quebec broke for a long time. However, certain writers still practice a regionalistic form of literature, which does not have anything to see with the novel of the soil. Within the literary institution, the regionalistic writers of today seem to belong to a sphere of distinct production. In order to delimit the space occupied by the contemporary regionalistic writers, we based ourselves on the theory of the literary field of Pierre Bourdieu and the theory of the institution of the literature of Jacques Dubois. So as to apply the model of Bourdieu and Dubois to a typical example of contemporary regionalistic writer, we chose to concentrate us on the career of Sylvain Riviere, Gaspesian writer born in 1955. Sylvain Riviere seems to be the regionalistic writer par excellence, who devoted the most part of his work to his region, Gaspesia and the Magdalen Islands. The example of Sylvain Riviere shows us that in spite of his marginality, the regionalistic writer is able to find his place inside the contemporary literary field.

Abstract:
During the first half of the twentieth century there was a flourishing of publishers in the United States that specialized in books with content targeted for regional audiences. One of the largest regional publishers west of the Mississippi was the Binfords & Mort publishing company of Portland, Oregon. In 1930, Binfords & Mort began publishing works of fiction, history, poetry, children's literature, and natural history by Pacific Northwest authors with content focused on the Pacific Northwest. Between 1930 and 1984, when the Binford family sold the publishing company, Binfords & Mort published around one thousand titles, and became a one of the leading influences on the Oregon literary scene. Although Binfords & Mort did not publish books that received widespread critical praise from national literary critics, its books sold well to Oregon readers. This thesis examines the economic and cultural contexts for Binfords & Mort, and its larger cultural impacts. The thesis also challenges the standard claim that Oregon literature underwent a major shift toward modernism after the publication of H.L. Davis's and James Stevens's critique of Oregon writing, Status Rerum in 1927. Instead, the thesis proposes that by looking at the output of Oregon's most popular publisher, Binfords & Mort, one finds that an older style of writing focused on the pioneer period continued to be popular well into the twentieth century. These publications had a widespread impact on Oregon's cultural development.

The present work makes some comments on the scattered productions of Gilberto Freyre and Lu?s da C?mara Cascudo, in the period which includes the early years of their intellectual performance, the second decade of the twentieth century. The corpus of the research is delimited on the texts published by Gilberto Freyre, from 1918 to 1926, which were gathered in the book Tempo de aprendiz (1979), and from the ones published by C?mara Cascudo in Natal local newpapers, such as A Imprensa and A Rep?blica, in 1924, 1927, 1928 and 1929. Concerning C?mara Cascudo s texts, the delimitations of these years is due to they had a relevant importance for the literary and cultural history of Rio Grande do Norte. The included discussions in these writers texts mainly happen around the modernist and regionalist ideas that happened restrictively in the Northeast region of Brazil, and are based on the relationships between literature and culture. Thus, the set of collaborations of both writers is useful as a sample of the intellectual thinking of the mentioned region. Besides, it is representative in the way the cultural debate got along in the country, which in turn, demanded the inclusion of the local realities in order to follow the renewing process of the worldwide thinking, and as matter of fact, arrange a new process in the Brazilian literary tradition. In this way, the study goals to set the positions taken by the two writers faced to the new challenges that the Brazilian reality of that moment was imposed on. The theoretical basis of this work is focused on the accumulated studies about the Brazilians modernism, regionalism and literature, pointing out the Candido s texts, (2006, 2004, 2002, 1995, 1993 and 1989), Schwarz s (1999, 1997a and 1997b), Perrone- Moys?s s (2007), Pallares-Burque s (2005), Azevedo s(1996), D Andrea s (1992), Ara?jo s (2006, 1998, 1997 and 1995), among other authors. Therefore, It is relevant the participation of both writers in that moment which highlights the renewing of the national thinking and the formation of the Brazilian cultural modernity, even the positions taken by them reveal, at times, different views concerning literature and tradition without being disagreeing, however

Abstract:
In this essay, I investigate how the historic and current economic structures operating in Appalachia from the 1920s to the 2010s are represented in two contemporary Southern Appalachian novels – Serena (2008) by Ron Rash and Flight Behavior (2012) by Barbara Kingsolver. Through the lens of postcolonial theory, I show how Serena represents Appalachia as functioning under the colonial model outlined by Robert Blauner and Helen Mathews Lewis in 1978. Then, still under the theory of postcolonialism, I explore how Kingsolver’s work depicts regional identity in response to a post-colonial environment and the ever-expanding global economy.

Abstract:
In Overcoming the Regional Burden: History, Tradition, and Myth in the Novels of Cormac McCarthy, I contend that McCarthy's literary aesthetic develops and changes as he moves from Tennessee to Texas. McCarthy's conspicuous Southern and Southwestern regional affiliations have led critics to expect his works to recapitulate native history, traditions, and myths. Yet, McCarthy transcends provincial regionalism by challenging the creation of the regional and national myths we confuse with our actual histories and identities. McCarthy's fictions point away from accepted histories and point instead to figures marginalized by society and myth makers. These figures, according to McCarthy, are just as much a part of the creation of myth as those figures indelibly imprinted on our consciousness by literary and historical tradition. My dissertation, in many respects, focuses on McCarthy's debunking of both literary and historical tradition, and his concomitant revitalization of American identity.

Hartvigsen, Ann K. "The Terrifying and the Beautiful: An Ecocritical Approach to Alexandre Hogue's Erosion Series." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2015. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/5695.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores the work of Texan painter Alexandre Hogue, and specifically how his 1930s Erosion Series, paintings of wind-ravaged farms during the Dust Bowl, promotes environmental attitudes long before America had a well developed ecological language. It analyzes the Erosion Series in the context of Hogue's personal land ethics and those of his artistic contemporaries, showing that the 1930s series strives to depict the devastation caused by both drought and aggressive farming practices. A comparison of Hogue's work to Regionalist artists like Thomas Hart Benton and Grant Wood reveals that Regionalists' depictions of land during the 1930s created an unrealistic portrayal of American farms with eternal abundance. In contrast, Hogue's series explores man's relationship to land and shows how that relationship is often destructive rather than constructive. In many ways, Hogue's work is much more in line with works by FSA photographers and filmmakers who, similar to Hogue, imaged more realistic depictions of Midwestern farms at the time. Ultimately, this thesis asserts that paintings, and the fine arts in general, are an important step to a more environmentally minded future—a future Alexandre Hogue sought to promote through nine ecologically charged works.
