Alvarez, Heidi Lee. "Regional aspects of Miami crime fiction." FIU Digital Commons, 1999. http://digitalcommons.fiu.edu/etd/1263.

Abstract:
This thesis argues that forces of literary regionalism and postmodern culture are behind the explosion of crime fiction being written in and about South Florida by a growing number of resident authors. Research included four methods of investigation: 1. A critical reading of many of the novels that make up the sub-genre. 2. A study of the theories of regionalism, postmodernism and the genre of the crime fiction. 3. Interviews with a number of the authors and a prominent Miami book seller. 4. Sociological studies of Miami in terms of historical events and their cultural significance. Today's South Florida crime fiction authors cast their narratives in the old genre of the detective novel where characters are delineated according to traditional definitions of good and evil. Evil characters threaten established order. What makes South Florida crime fiction different from traditional detective fiction is its interest in the exotic, postmodern culture and setting of South Florida. Like the region, the villains are exotic and the order that they threaten is postmodern. There is less of an interest in attributing a larger social meaning to the heroes. Rather, there is an ontological interest in the playing out of good against evil in an almost mythical setting that magnifies economic, environmental and racial issues. There is a unique cultural diversity of the city due to the geographical location of Miami in relationship to Latin America and the Caribbean, and the political forces at work in the region. South Florida's subtropical climate, fragile ecosystem, and elements of frontier life in a cosmopolitan city work to support Miami crime fiction. The setting personifies the unpredictability and pastiche of a postmodern world and may call for a new definition for literature that relies on non-traditional regional characteristics.

Abstract:

The topic studied in this master’s thesis is the investigation about the contribution of Grupo Matrícula to consolidate a regional literary system in Serra Gaúcha. Understanding the literature like a particular system, elements of production will be analyzed, as the publication, and diffusion in relation to the group. Writers, readers, books, publishing houses, universities, libraries, bookstores, and critical analysis are part of this system. The literary landscape, where the anthology arises, will be observed, and, also, the literary configuration after that. Based on the sociology of literature, this research is firstly developed considering a literary system in its totality, and, gradually, it reduces to the regional literary system in Serra Gaúcha, and, finally, it verifies the role of the Grupo Matrícula in the consolidation of a system. The studies about cultural region, regionalities, regional literature and literary systems will be used as theoretical basis. The social and cultural factors of a region that act on the production and reception of literature, the institutions that constitute a regional literary landscape, and, also, the conditions of reading and the literary public are investigating elements of this work. They contribute to understand the literary life in Serra Gaúcha, between 1950 and 1980.

Lo, Yun-Fang. "Translators' and target readers' reconstruction of regionalism in Taiwan's regional prose literature." Thesis, University of Newcastle Upon Tyne, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10443/1457.

Full text
Abstract:
The object of this research is to investigate the dynamic nature of identity construction of a regional place in English translations. The study focuses on the analysis of Wang Zhenhe’s works in translation. The Regional Prose Literature of Taiwan was developed when writers began to examine their identity and sense of belonging under Japanese colonization (1895-1945) and later the rule of the Nationalist government under Martial Law (1949-1987) by using narrative and descriptive prose as a vehicle for presenting the distinctiveness of the island. The dialects, the colonial language, local customs and scenes which regional writers created in their stories brought out what they saw as the uniqueness of Taiwan identity. However, Taiwan, like Hong Kong, has been categorized by many scholars as part of the Han-Chinese-influenced region, which shares the same cultural identity. Translating Taiwan, therefore, depends on how a translator understands and (re)constructs its cultural and political discourse in translation. This thesis uses a cognitive-pragmatic model (CPM) to describe how a translation of regional prose literature communicates to readers of the target culture. The CPM in translation studies looks at translation from the aspects of literary communication and the comprehension process. It enables the researcher (1) to study the textual signals of a place which readers used to construct the text of the source cultural world; (2) to examine how these signals were conveyed in the target text; (3) to study the likely effects on specific readers who have little or no knowledge of the source text culture. The major finding of this study is that communication through translated literature depends not only on the translator’s roles as a reader and a rewriter, but also on target readers’ processing effort and literary competence. Textual analysis shows that the translators’ decisions on conveying regional signals in translations often affect readers’ comprehension of the target text (TT). When the translation is too literal and the cultural signal is unfamiliar to the target readers, those who have little or no knowledge of Taiwan have more difficulties understanding the text. Reader response studies also show that the use of footnotes in the literary translation is not always unacceptable by the readers when specific regional elements are preserved in the TT. Target readers’ reception of cultural signals relies firstly on their existing knowledge and secondly on the information they receive from the translation. Effective communication therefore results from a translator’s assumption of target readers’ schemas and efforts in making the translation comprehensible and coherent, especially when there are regional elements in the translation.

Abstract:
x, 94 p. : col. ill.
Siberia is a space that is more ideologic than it is geographic; it lacks defined physical boundaries and has no precise date of founding. Throughout its contemporary history as a Russian territory, the Siberia of public imagination has been dictated primarily by the views and agendas of external actors, and its culture and literature - despite having multi-ethnic, multi-linguistic, and multi-religious roots - have been subsumed by the greater Russian tradition to which they are uneasily tied. Using an historical framework, this thesis establishes that there is, in fact, a canon of Siberian literature that stands apart from the Russian canon and that incorporates not only Russian texts but also other European and local indigenous ones. Furthermore, I contend that this canon has both been shaped by and continues to shape a pan-Siberian identity that unifies the border-less, ideologic space in a way that physical boundaries cannot.

Henningsgaard, Per Hansa. "Outside traditional book publishing centres : the production of a regional literature in Western Australia." University of Western Australia. English and Cultural Studies Discipline Group, 2008. http://theses.library.uwa.edu.au/adt-WU2008.0255.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis provides a study of book publishing as it contributes to the production of a regional literature, using Western Australian publishing and literature as illustrative examples of this dynamic. 'Regional literature' is defined in this thesis as writing possessing cultural value that is specific to a region, although the writing may also have national and international value. An awareness of geographically and culturally diverse regions within the framework of the nation is shown to be derived from representations of these regions and their associated regional characteristics in the movies, television and books. In Australia, literature has been the primary site for expressions of regional difference. Therefore, this thesis analyses the impact of regionalism on the processes of book production and publication in Western Australia’s three major publishing houses— a trade publishing house (Fremantle Press), an Indigenous publishing house (Magabala Books), and an academic publishing house (University of Western Australia Press). Book history, print culture studies and publishing studies, along with literary studies and cultural studies, roughly approximate a disciplinary map of the types of research that constitute this thesis. By examining regional literature in the context of its 'field of cultural production', this thesis maintains that regionalism and regional literature can avail themselves of a fresh perspective that shows them to be anything but marginal or exclusive. Regionalism has been a topic of peripheral interest, at least as far as scholarly research and academia are concerned, because those who are most likely to be affected by and thus interested in the topic, are also those who are most disempowered as a result of its attendant dynamics. However, as this thesis clearly demonstrates, access (or a lack thereof) to the field of cultural production (which in the case of print culture includes writers, literary agents, editors, publishers, government arts organisations, the media, schools, book clubs, and book retailers, just to name a few) plays a significant role in establishing and shaping an identity for marginalised 3 constituencies. The implications for this research are far-ranging, since both Western Australia and Australia can be understood as peripheries dominated in their different spheres (the 'national' and the 'international', respectively) by literary cultures residing elsewhere. Furthermore, there are parallels between this dynamic and the dynamic responsible for producing postcolonial literatures. The three publishing houses detailed in this thesis are disadvantaged by many of the factors associated with their distance from the traditional centres of book publishing, while at the same time producing a regional literature that serves as a platform from which the state broadcasts its distinctive contributions to the cultural landscape and to a wider understanding of concepts such as space, place and belonging. These publishing houses changed the way in which Australians and others have come to know and think about 'Australia', re-routing public consciousness and the national imagination.

Abstract:
During the first half of the twentieth century there was a flourishing of publishers in the United States that specialized in books with content targeted for regional audiences. One of the largest regional publishers west of the Mississippi was the Binfords & Mort publishing company of Portland, Oregon. In 1930, Binfords & Mort began publishing works of fiction, history, poetry, children's literature, and natural history by Pacific Northwest authors with content focused on the Pacific Northwest. Between 1930 and 1984, when the Binford family sold the publishing company, Binfords & Mort published around one thousand titles, and became a one of the leading influences on the Oregon literary scene. Although Binfords & Mort did not publish books that received widespread critical praise from national literary critics, its books sold well to Oregon readers. This thesis examines the economic and cultural contexts for Binfords & Mort, and its larger cultural impacts. The thesis also challenges the standard claim that Oregon literature underwent a major shift toward modernism after the publication of H.L. Davis's and James Stevens's critique of Oregon writing, Status Rerum in 1927. Instead, the thesis proposes that by looking at the output of Oregon's most popular publisher, Binfords & Mort, one finds that an older style of writing focused on the pioneer period continued to be popular well into the twentieth century. These publications had a widespread impact on Oregon's cultural development.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the geographic complexity of English identity in the High Middle Ages by examining texts that reflect moments and spaces of cultural contact. While interaction with a cultural Other is often thought to reinforce national identity, I challenge this notion, positing instead that, in the texts analysed here, cultural meetings prompt the formation or consolidation of regional identities. These identities are often simultaneously local and cross-cultural, inclusive but based in community ties and a shared sense of place. Each of the four chapters examines a different kind of regional identity and its relation to Englishness through romances and historiographical texts in Anglo-Latin, Anglo-Norman, and Middle English. Discussion primarily focuses on the Gesta Herwardi, Gaimar's Estoire des Engleis, Fouke le Fitz Waryn, Gui de Warewic, Boeve de Haumtone, Le roman de toute chevalerie, and Richard Coer de Lyon. Each of these texts negotiates English identity in relation to a cultural Other, and balances various aspects of cultural identity and scales of geographic affiliation. While some focus exclusively on a particular locality, others create inclusive regional identities, draw together the foreign and the familiar, or depict England as a region on the edge of an interconnected world. These texts show that Englishness can carry different meanings, nuances, and identitary strategies that depend on context, location, or ideology. Together, they forge an image of England that is diverse and multinucleated. Its borders become spaces of meeting, connection, and cultural overlap, as well as division. These works establish a strong English identity while articulating England's necessary relationship with other places, spaces, and peoples, challenging not the borders of England, but the borders of Englishness.

McGovern, Jennifer Anne. "The Captive press: captivity narratives, print networks, and regional prospects, 1838-1895." Diss., University of Iowa, 2014. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/6612.

Full text
Abstract:
The Captive Press argues that nineteenth-century Indian captivity narratives escaped from the expectations of the American literary marketplace through manipulations of the material text. With modern methods of production, promotion, and dissemination, captivity narratives dominated the reading public even as Native peoples were forced to submit to governmental encroachments. This study focuses on narratives produced by and about Anglo-American women whose impoverished return from captivity motivated them to write for their livelihood. The narratives of Rachel Parker Plummer, Sarah Larimer, Fanny Kelly, and Abbie Gardner-Sharp were designed to appeal to local readers who were likely to become financial sponsors through direct marketing. Later editions added para-textual material, developed textual content, and introduced illustrations such as wood engravings or photographs to increase marketability for broader audiences. By publishing captivity narratives on state presses and distributing them through regional print networks, nineteenth-century producers maintained the homegrown flavor of the genre while expanding readership beyond local boundaries. This dissertation demonstrates how, with the assistance of editors, illustrators, and publishers, these entrepreneurial women reversed their subject position to hold the popular press captive.

This study uses the seven novels, by the author Rachel de Queiroz (1910-2003): O Quinze (1930), João Miguel (1932), Caminhos de Pedra (1937), as Três Marias (1939), O Galo de Ouro (1950), Dôra, Doralina (1975), and Memorial de Maria Moura (1992) with the objective of identifying and describing the regional lexicon from the Brazilian Northeast, especially, from Ceará, the state where she was born. Such objective was justified by the author's own words who said, in several occasions, that her characters, although they are fictional, they are representative of the Northeast culture, and that they also refer to characteristics of the people from her social life. The investigation of Rachel de Queiroz's work, in a linguistic perspective, is quite relevant due to the fact that this author presents in her writing a set of works composed greatly of ordinary language from the Northeast. This language is presented through countless regionalisms, which encompass words and expressions and proverbs. All this richness in ways of speaking may be found, mainly, in her novels, since it was exactly, through this literary genre, that Rachel de Queiroz expressed the dramatic situation of men in the dry and poor lands of the Northeast. In the composition of a literary work, the lexicon assumes an important role in the sense of that it provides us with a monitoring process of advance and transformation of language integrated in the culture of a people. For that, this research will be conducted in the prospect of theoretical principles of Lexicology and Lexicography, based on Aragão (2006), Krieger et al (2006), Biderman (2001), Isquerdo (1998), and Barbosa (1991), in order to produce a glossary with lexical regional unities presented in Rachel de Queiroz's novels. We believe that this perspective of research is relevant to Linguistic studies, since it treats of a social and ethnolinguistic research, which investigates the linguistic variation in its social context, more particularly, concerning the linguistic process and the Northeastern regional culture, inserted in the glossary, as a way of giving contribution to some gaps in the area of Lexicology and Lexicography, specially, the regional one, and to Rachel de Queiroz's literary criticism.

Abstract:
Since its conception in folklore and superstition, the vampire has had an innate ability to reflect the environment of the culture that creates it. Each manifestation of this being is entirely unique to the culture in which it is born. The vampire of the American South is no exception to this idea. As a region with a particularly tumultuous history, the South has been molded by many cultural influences. Religion, sexuality, and race are some of the most notable factors to have impacted the area. Many Southern authors writing vampire fiction explore the fears, stereotypes, and prejudices of the culture with the vampire characters as a means to represent and critique Southern identity. Vampires in Anne Rice’s Interview with the Vampire, Poppy Z. Brite’s Lost Souls, Scott Nicholson’s They Hunger, Alan Ball’s True Blood, and Patrick Lussier’s Dracula 2000 all reveal something about the culture of the South.

Claridade - literature and arts journal - is considered a landmark in the literary development of Cape Verde. The motto set feet into creoule ground remained a strategy in the search of themes that reflected the social reality of the islands. The contact with Brazilian writers (modernists and regionalists), from the 1930s on, was a driving force to the development and modernization of Cape Verde literature. Gilberto Freyre\'s works, particularly his Regionalista Manifesto, played a significant role since they provided a theoretical and methodological framework to the acknowledgment of cultural roots and the islands\' social formation. This study centers on the analysis of Claridadoso group, whose activities questioned the Literary and cultural identity of the islands by taking into account the regional aspects, as shown by Claridade editions from 1930s to 1960s.

Abstract:

Some elements of historical and cultural reality, identified in fiction about the State of Rio Grande do Sul, have contributed and still contribute to the construction of a social imaginary and of a regional identity, whether in representations of the environment in which the narrative takes place or in the language used by the writer. On the assumption that the writer’s lexical choices are relevant factors to setting the historical context of a given season, this paper aims to examine the relation between the lexicon of the novel called “The House of Seven Women”, by Leticia Wierzchowski (2002) and regional culture. To achieve these goals, this dissertation develops a lexical-semantic analysis of the representation of the historicalcultural and social characteristics of Rio Grande do Sul from the selection of lexias, organized into lexical fields according to Coseriu's theory (1979). As theoretical contribution it was used the lexical studies, Lexicology, Lexicography and Terminology, emphasizing the lexicon related to culture and regional aspects.

Abstract:

Abstract:

The aim of this research is to investigate the literary and political project of Mansueto Bernardi (1888-1966), through comprehensive analysis of his literary and historiographic essays, as well as of his speeches and poems. Having published only one literary work, the author had nevertheless intense cultural and political activity in the first half of twentieth century. Besides creating and supervising periodicals at Livraria e Editora Globo, in Porto Alegre, he served in both the federal and the Rio Grande do Sul state governments, having achieved the position of Chairman of the Brazilian Mint (Casa da Moeda) during President Getúlio Vargas administration. This study attemps to demonstrate that Bernardi tried to make the culture of Rio Grande do Sul known and made considerable efforts to divulge the creed of Catholicism in Brazilian society, therefore placing religion as a main source for his literary and political project. This Dissertation constitutes an interdisciplinary approach that reports the findings of research involving Literature, History and Sociology, while focusing regional culture.

Abstract:

This study has as main purpose develop a dialogue between the Literature and the History in order to evidence their contributions to construct the gaucho hero s image. For such, we have selected the literary compositions O Gaúcho, of José de Alencar and O Vaqueano, of Apolinário Porto Alegre, because their innovations in the formation of the gaucho s personage as well as they were precursors of the rio-grandense s regionalist literature. The analysis discourse into the recital that the author s ideology is inserted into their narratives. We have analyzed the compositions into their context ideological and secular description, and we identified the images constructed in the narratives served in the meanings construction for the gaucho, and, by this way, they lead the text to the contemplation of ideologies contained in projects previously stipulated. We state the gaucho s figure suffered modifications during the time to attend ideological definitions of the society where it was inserted. In the XX century, the history served the politics for the construction of a regionalist identity, corroborating with the anticipated construction for literature. Thus, it put the gaucho in the center of attentions, constructing a hero who served of link for the cultural unification of the State, defended the ideology of the politics, reinforcing it, and infused a idealized image of the gaucho into the collective unconscious of the rio-grandense people.

Graciliano Ramos, in his literary works, always did a search into human s soul , as Antonio Cândido said. Such searching is done through psychological and social views, with the support of the literary language. However, the language used by the northern writer is distinguished: he legitimates the northern language, showing to the reader what the peoples from this place could say, think and ponder in many situations. Among Graciliano s literary works, we intend to tell about some analogous topics on the first four published books: Caetes (1933), Saint Bernard (1934), Anguish (1936) and Barren Lives (1938) are books we can find literary connection between the author and the characters; the Graciliano s severe self-criticism; the analysis about humane and their social local; the ideological conflict; and the language s power. However, the last subject is analyzed with emphasis on the two last books because, in our reading, the writer focuses the combination between the language and human beings in their social place. In this way, we are going to try helping the studies about Graciliano s literary works for extending the knowledge about northern literature in Brazil.

Abstract:
This thesis reexamines the beginnings of Swedish hardboiled crime literature, in part tracking its lineage to American culture and unpacking Swedish identity. Following the introduction, the second chapter asserts how this genre began as a form of escapism, specifically in Maj Sjöwall and Per Wahlöö’s Roseanna. The third chapter compares predecessor Raymond Chandler’s The Big Sleep with Roseanna, and how Sweden’s greater gender tolerance significantly outshining America’s is reflected in literature. The fourth chapter examines how Henning Mankell’s novels fail to fully accept Sweden’s complicity in neo-Nazism as an active component of Swedish identity. The final chapter reveals Helene Tursten’s Detective Inspector Huss engaging with gender and racial relations in unique ways, while also releasing the suppressive qualities found in the Swedish identity post-war. Therefore, this thesis will better contextualize the onset of the genre, and how its lineage reflects the fruits and the damages alike in the Swedish identity.

Abstract:
In the aftermath the 25th January Revolution of 2011, two Egyptian dystopian novels stand out as particularly relevant: Utopia (2008) by Ahmed Khaled Towfik, and The Queue (2013), by Basma Abdel Aziz. Due to the absence of studies that pay attention to how gender relations are portrayed in Arabic dystopian novels, this study focuses on the literary representation of men and masculinities in Utopia and The Queue. This thesis uses narratology and content analysis in order to show that, although patterns of local masculinities are different in both novels, regional and global models of masculinity clearly point out men as controlling, violent and hypersexual, which is supported by multiple institutions, such as the state, media, and the religious establishment. The inclusion of relevant ethnological studies of masculinities in Egypt confirms that the social criticism of the novels include gender relations, and refers to the time in which the novels were written. This study points out the need for recognizing Arabic dystopian fiction as a valuable instrument that carries meaningful and intricate social criticism, as well as the need for the inclusion of gender as a category of literary analysis.

The present work makes some comments on the scattered productions of Gilberto Freyre and Lu?s da C?mara Cascudo, in the period which includes the early years of their intellectual performance, the second decade of the twentieth century. The corpus of the research is delimited on the texts published by Gilberto Freyre, from 1918 to 1926, which were gathered in the book Tempo de aprendiz (1979), and from the ones published by C?mara Cascudo in Natal local newpapers, such as A Imprensa and A Rep?blica, in 1924, 1927, 1928 and 1929. Concerning C?mara Cascudo s texts, the delimitations of these years is due to they had a relevant importance for the literary and cultural history of Rio Grande do Norte. The included discussions in these writers texts mainly happen around the modernist and regionalist ideas that happened restrictively in the Northeast region of Brazil, and are based on the relationships between literature and culture. Thus, the set of collaborations of both writers is useful as a sample of the intellectual thinking of the mentioned region. Besides, it is representative in the way the cultural debate got along in the country, which in turn, demanded the inclusion of the local realities in order to follow the renewing process of the worldwide thinking, and as matter of fact, arrange a new process in the Brazilian literary tradition. In this way, the study goals to set the positions taken by the two writers faced to the new challenges that the Brazilian reality of that moment was imposed on. The theoretical basis of this work is focused on the accumulated studies about the Brazilians modernism, regionalism and literature, pointing out the Candido s texts, (2006, 2004, 2002, 1995, 1993 and 1989), Schwarz s (1999, 1997a and 1997b), Perrone- Moys?s s (2007), Pallares-Burque s (2005), Azevedo s(1996), D Andrea s (1992), Ara?jo s (2006, 1998, 1997 and 1995), among other authors. Therefore, It is relevant the participation of both writers in that moment which highlights the renewing of the national thinking and the formation of the Brazilian cultural modernity, even the positions taken by them reveal, at times, different views concerning literature and tradition without being disagreeing, however

The present research aims to analyze how literature and memory can be related. In addition to other objectives such as: to understand the role of the State in the construction of the memory of the West of Paraná, mainly in Foz do Iguaçu and as the migratory phenomenon, before the construction of the great architectural works - Ponte da Amizade and Itaipu Binacional, for example - affected the process of formation and sedimentation of memories. For these objectives to be achieved, one voice was especially significant: The voice of José Alexandre de Oliveira, or Tio Bahia. The methodology used was based on the qualitative method. Firstly, bibliographical research was carried out in order to know the memory of Foz do Iguaçu, as its main source the book written and edited by the municipal administration of 1997: Foz do Iguaçu: retratos, besides the contributions of Luiz Eduardo Pena Catta (2003 and 2009) and Maria Aparecida Bento Ribeiro (2002). In a second moment, field research was used, specifically the interview. The scripts elaboration and analysis were anchored in the oral history method. The first chapter revisits the memory of Foz do Iguaçu bringing with it the memories of former residents of the city and reaffirming the official reports about the constitution of the municipality. For the second chapter, the influence of the State manifests itself through the construction of Itaipu monument, whose work established a landmark in the memory of city, since the pre-1970s interior scenario suffered intense structural and population changes, in which the phenomenon impacted directly on social life. Tio Bahia, one of these thousands of migrants narrated his history and some of the work in the Itaipu. The 80-year-old lord became the voice of marginalized writers and to interpret this senile voice the work Memória e Sociedade: lembranças de velhos by Ecléa Bosi (1994) was paramount. In the third chapter, through the produced literature, Tio Bahia presents his memories - of migrant and dam worker - reinvented in the form of poetry, in which it was tried to evidence that the literature can be a strong ally of the memory to vivify the memories of those who are at the margin of society. The link between marginal literature, migration and senile memory presents itself as a possibility for understanding what is valued as memory and history of Foz do Iguaçu.

Abstract:
In Overcoming the Regional Burden: History, Tradition, and Myth in the Novels of Cormac McCarthy, I contend that McCarthy's literary aesthetic develops and changes as he moves from Tennessee to Texas. McCarthy's conspicuous Southern and Southwestern regional affiliations have led critics to expect his works to recapitulate native history, traditions, and myths. Yet, McCarthy transcends provincial regionalism by challenging the creation of the regional and national myths we confuse with our actual histories and identities. McCarthy's fictions point away from accepted histories and point instead to figures marginalized by society and myth makers. These figures, according to McCarthy, are just as much a part of the creation of myth as those figures indelibly imprinted on our consciousness by literary and historical tradition. My dissertation, in many respects, focuses on McCarthy's debunking of both literary and historical tradition, and his concomitant revitalization of American identity.

Set mostly around the poet’s home along the Watauga River in northeast Tennessee, the poems also reach out to such distant locations as Montana, Alaska, and post-war Germany. Some of them reconstruct the poet’s childhood in rural West Virginia. Some examine his family history, the events and relatives who helped determine the way he views the world.

Abstract:
This thesis aims at analyzing how the German immigrant culture is made based on two books of current German Literature which approach Hunsrück emigration to Rio Grande do Sul. In order to make it possible, a brief revision of both German and Brazilian historical context was made related to the first half of the nineteenth century. Afterwards, the process of immigration was introduced from five places which represent this movement, from the moment of leaving the land to the arrival at the new place. Besides, based on a post-colonial perspective present in current literary theory, the research focused on highlighting the concepts of hybridization and Third Space related to culture contact and to the ensuing beginning of a hybrid culture. Then, after the presentation of the books Menschen im Aufbruch (1998) and Das Mädchen am Rio Paraíso (2010), selected as research corpus, the main elements which characterize the five places of the Romance of Migration and the elements which are connected to the German and Brazilian culture were identified. As a result, they indicate how the culture of the German immigrant is built at São Leopoldo Colony. Finally, based on the data found, an analysis of convergent and divergent elements in both novels was made. Therefore, from this analysis, it was observed that the five places which constitute the migration movement were found in both books. There are even similar aspects in the novels. The post-colonial theory helped highlight the contact between Brazilian and German cultures as presented in the literary books and, from these connections, how the hybrid culture of the German settler is built in the novels.

CAPES
In this academic work, the process of building the regional space in of D. Aquino Corrêa Silva Freire and Gabriel de Mattos works is investigated. Each author is representative and active in his generation, and designs an artistic language that recreates myths using archetypal images, in which space is poetically reconstituted, consolidating Mato Grosso's peculiar traces. Since the rise of regionalist conception in the early twentieth century, with Don Francisco de Aquino Corrêa, some concern with local identity is noticed, intertwining in the literary work a number of important elements such as: the nature, conquerors, the city, food, people, language, culture etc., in short, all the surrounding reality that populate the art imaginary . These elements, symbolically translated, that demonstrate the artist's worldview, reflecting the range of images that interpret and build the space, to emphasize the man's relationship with his "world", both in poetry and in prose. In these two possibilities of creation, we use the imaginary Gilbert Durand theory, based on the concept of myth analisys, for understanding the mythèmes that cover and recognize the particularities of each work, as well as the similarities between the thinking of the authors and process by which becomes a recurring experience in cosmicized space, which, in the twentieth century poetry, more specifically until the 50s, is the image of the paradise or the "Great Mother"; and, in the twenty-first century writing, becomes the place where the ritual transformation of being occurs, allowing a mythical aura of historical knowledge, of everyday living and the relationship between man and space.

Abstract:
Anxiety and fear are described as commonly occurring feelings before surgical procedures. In many situations, music can divert people’s attention from negative factors including worries and stress. Regional anesthesia is a common surgical method with less hemodynamic effect on the patient. The nurse anesthetist has a significant profession within the team and will make the patient feel safe and the nurse anesthetist has a great responsibility when the patient is to undergo anesthesia. Music is cost-effective and has soothing effect on the patient before anesthesia. New and increased knowledge is needed to minimize the risk of anxiety but also to increase the patient’s well-being. The purpose was to examine music’s impact on patients who are undergoing regional anesthesia. The method used was a systematic literature study. Eleven articles were included in the result, one qualitative and ten quantitative. Data analysis was performed and resulted in main categories and sub-teams. The result includes two main categories: the music´s psychological effect on the patient and the music’s physiological effect on the patient as well as five sub-teams: anxiety, well-being, vital parameters, chemical parameters and pain. The patients experienced less anxiety and increased well-being before the procedure when they were listening to music. Vital parameters like blood pressure, heart rate, and respiratory rate became lower in the music groups. Music also had a positive effect on pain, blood sugar and cortisol. Some of the studies showed no significant difference between the categories. In the discussion part, the study’s selected method’s pros and cons, as well as the study’s result with a comparison of differences and similarities are discussed. Being offered to listen to music during a regional anesthesia can have both positive and negative effects on the patient.

Abstract:
Objective: To examine systematically the literature on the effect of geographical location variation on breast cancer stage at diagnosis, race/ethnicity, and socioeconomic status. Methods. Eight electronic databases were searched using combination of key words. Of the 312 articles retrieved from the search, 36 studies from 12 countries were considered eligible for inclusion. Results. This review identified 17 (47%) of 36 studies in which breast cancer patients residing in geographically remote/rural areas had more late-stage diagnosis than urban women. Ten (28%) studies reported higher proportions of women diagnosed with breast cancer resided in urban than rural counties. Nine (25%) studies reported no statistically significant association between place of residence and stage at diagnosis for breast cancer patients residing in rural and urban areas. Conclusions. Cancer patients residing in rural and disadvantaged areas were more likely to be diagnosed with distant breast metastasis. Efforts to reduce these inequalities and subsequent mortality are needed.

Abstract:
Revelations: Poems, Appalachian poet Ted Olson’s second full-length poetry collection, contains eleven chapters of seven poems per chapter. Plying various forms and exhibiting a strong sense of musicality, these poems explore such themes as childhood, family, memory, love, nature, ritual, and visions both literal and spiritual. Olson’s poems provide surprising snapshots of a shared world that is all-too-often ignored or unexplored. In the words of literary critic James Owens, “We need Ted Olson. In his truest voice, he is a visionary poet, restlessly prying at the dim everyday with the shiny edge of intelligent illumination. His poems locate the connections and epiphanies, right there where they have always been, unseen until now and waiting for the right eye to find them, the right tongue to give them clarity and form.”

Full text
Abstract:
The emergence of regional security organisations during the 1990s in Africa proved to be of great significance for the lives of many Africans, including those living in conflict-torn countries such as Liberia, Sierra Leone, Côte d’Ivoire or the Democratic Republic of Congo, but, at the same time, this phenomenon has been understudied. This dissertation explores why regional security organisations with an agenda of democratic governance emerged in Africa in the 1990s. This question is answered with two in-depth case studies on the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC). Driven by an empirical puzzle, this study is both hypothesis-testing and hypothesis generating. The study starts by laying out the different possible factors put forward by several bodies of theory in international relations to explain the emergence of ECOWAS and SADC as security organisations. These hypotheses are then tested throughout the history and the evolution of ECOWAS and SADC in order to highlight the circumstances of their creation and their qualified failure as economic communities. This is followed by a comparative analysis of the security and democracy mandates entrusted to ECOWAS and SADC by its member states based on the study of the legal texts that outline the specific objectives of each regional security organisation and the tools they were given to implement their mandates. The study finally analyses the implementation records of ECOWAS and SADC in order to assess the commitment of their member states to their new democracy and security mandate. The research concludes with the two following hypotheses: 1) A security agenda cannot emerge without the involvement of the regional hegemon. 2) What the regional hegemon can do, including affecting the speed of the transformation, is constrained by the acceptance of its leadership by its neighbours (legitimacy) and by state weakness (capability).
