Abstract:
The art of reconstructing a real-world scene digitally has been on the mind of researchers for decades. Recently, it has attracted more and more attention from companies seeing a chance to bring this kind of technology to the market. Digital reconstruction of buildings in particular is a niche that has both potential and room for improvement. With this background, this thesis will present the design and evaluation of a pipeline made to find and correct approximately flat surfaces in architectural scenes. The scenes are 3D-reconstructed triangle meshes based on RGB images. The thesis will also comprise an evaluation of a few different components available for doing this, leading to a choice of best components. The goal is to improve the visual quality of the reconstruction. The final pipeline is designed with two blocks - one to detect initial plane seeds and one to refine the detected planes. The first block makes use of a multi-label energy formulation on the graph that describes the reconstructed surface. Penalties are assigned to each vertex and each edge of the graph based on the vertex labels, effectively describing a Markov Random Field. The energy is minimized with the help of the alpha-expansion algorithm. The second block uses heuristics for growing the detected plane seeds, merging similar planes together and extracting deviating details. Results on several scenes are presented, showing that the visual quality has been improved while maintaining accuracy compared with ground truth data.

Abstract:

Binagui-Casas, Anahi Liliana. "Analysis of the role of Flk-1 during mouse haematopoietic stem cell development." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/31134.

Full text
Abstract:
In the mouse embryo, the first definitive haematopoietic stem cells (HSCs), capable of repopulating adult irradiated mice, emerge at mid-gestation by embryonic day E11. At this stage, the aorta-gonad-mesonephros (AGM) region is able to initiate and expand HSCs. Recently, it has been shown that the development of HSC in the AGM region results from the maturation of haematopoietic precursors called pre-HSCs. Mounting evidence points at an endothelial origin for these cells, the haematogenic endothelium. Analysis of VEGFs mutants, a critical pathway for endothelial developement, suggested that it also plays a role during early haematopoiesis. The main receptor of the pathway, FLK-1 (also known as VEGRR2 or KDR), is expressed in early hematopoietic and endothelial cells in the mouse embryo. Knock-out mutants for Flk-1 showed a decrease of endothelial and intra-embryonic haematopoietic progenitors. Although Flk-1 has been identified as an essential gene for HSC emergence, its exact point of action in HSC development remains unknown. In this thesis, I investigated the role of FLK-1 signalling in haematopoietic development and defined precise stages and cell types during HSC emergence in which FLK-1 is critically involved. by using a reporter line and antibody staining, I demonstrated that FLK-1 is expressed in the pre-HSCs/HSC lineage. Germ-line Flk-1 knockout results in embryonic lethality at around E9.0, before HSC emergence, mainly due to defects in vasculogenesis. Since arterial specification precedes HSC formation, it has never been elucidated whether the haematopoietic defects found in the knockouts are a secondary effect of the loss of vasculature or it FLK-1 is directly involved in haematopoietic specification. Therefore, to determine the role of the receptor in HSC development, I used a conditional inducible mutagenesis approach that allowed the deletion of Flk-1 precisely when pre-HSCs mature into HSCs at E10.5 and E11.5. My data showed that Flk-1 deletion at these stages affects both endothelial and haematopoietic progenitors, as well as HSCs. This suggests that the VEGF pathway is not only essential in early stages of haematopoietic development, as previously demonstrated, but it may be also involved in the maturation of pre HSC into HSCs at later stages.

Beatty, Robert L. "Legacy to the people : community and the Orange County Regional History Center." Master's thesis, University of Central Florida, 2002. http://digital.library.ucf.edu/cdm/ref/collection/RTD/id/797.

Abstract:
University of Central Florida College of Arts and Sciences Thesis
The development and birth of the Orange County Regional History Center is perhaps unlike any other local history museum in the United States. Its story is worth telling because of its long gestation, the difficulties in bringing this center to life, and the goals of the people who made it possible. All of these elements are a vital part of the history of Orange County, Florida and should not be overlooked. In this light, this thesis will discuss more fully three topics in relation to the creation of the new History Center. First, it will look at the American museum field and its role as a community-building enterprise in American society. Second, it will examine the history of Central Florida, a region that sorely lacks a strong sense of community. Third, it will trace the transformation of the Orange County Historical Society and Museum from a small volunteer-run museum into the Orange County Regional History Center, the largest history museum in Central Florida. The ultimate goal of the History Center is to foster a sense of community in a region with little feeling of connectedness. This community building goal has evolved from both a renewed emphasis on community service in the museum field, and the desire of the History Center's leaders and staff to serve more effectively the Central Florida region. My thesis tells the story of the history and development of the Regional History Center, an institution dedicated to bringing the diverse community of Central Florida together for discussion, dialogue, and reflection. It also identifies some of the new roles and functions it must assume in the future and the new tasks that await it as it strives to become more useful and relevant to its community. In that way, and through that resource, the institution can help build the foundation for a more promising future for present and future residents of Orange County.

Iordanou, Grigorios. "Flat-plate solar collectors for water heating with improved heat transfer for application in climatic conditions of the Mediterranean Region." Thesis, Durham University, 2009. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/174/.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this research project is to improve the thermal performance of passive flat plate solar collectors using a novel cost effective enhanced heat transfer technique. The project work focuses on the process of energy conversion from the collector to the working fluid. This is accomplished by employing an aluminium grid placed in the channels of a collector to induce a gradient of heat capacitance. This novel technique is tested both theoretically by means of simplistic designs using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and experimentally using two unglazed collectors. One collector has the aluminium net inserted in its channels and it is tested against an identical conventional collector in order to have a direct comparison at the same time. The obtained CFD data and the experimental findings are coupled and show a good agreement. All the obtained results are validated with the literature. The results both theoretical and experimental demonstrate an enhancement in the heat transfer coefficient by 9 % resulting to an increase in the output temperature of the working fluid in the collector with the metallic insertion. Other parameters such as the Nusselt and Raleigh numbers supported these findings. Three novel expressions that correlate the Nusselt and the Rayleigh number, for different heat fluxes, were developed using data from CFD and experimental results. These correlations can be applied on any flat plate collector with an aluminium grid in its pipes, in order to predict its performance. Furthermore an existing lumped parameters model that predicts the output temperature of a collector was simplified and improved.

Elseragy, Ahmed A. B. "Architectural and solar potential of curved and flat roofs in hot arid regions (with reference to Egypt)." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2004. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/12383/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigates the effect of, various vaulted and domed roof geometries on their solar behaviour under given summer and winter conditions. Roof is the building-envelope element that is most exposed to the sun as it receives a high amount of solar radiation, which is the main cause of summer overheating in hot-arid climates. In addition, to other climatic and physical factors, indoor thermal comfort in hot-arid climates is also influenced by the intensity of solar radiation received by roof surfaces. Therefore, roof form and geometry should be designed with careful consideration to insolation parameters. Domed, vaulted, and curved roofs have been used for a long time in hot-arid regions for historical, cultural, climatic, and structural reasons. The review of previous research work showed that different explanations have been given to the climatic effects of their forms and the environmental behaviour of their enclosed spaces. The research explores the previous attempts that discussed the relevant principles of solar radiation and solar geometry on horizontal and tilted surfaces with different orientations. The previous work that applied these principles and theories to evaluate the solar behaviour of architectural elements with arbitrary forms was also investigated. In order to evaluate the solar performance of flat and curved roofs geometrical configurations, a parametric study testing the received solar radiation intensity (W/m2) on flat, vaulted, and domed roofs with different span-to-height ratios and orientations was carried out using a published solar computer model. The results of this model were followed by validation tests using other two commercially available computer tools to carry out a brief solar and thermal analysis of selected curved-roof geometries. The evaluated curved-roofs solar performance and main findings of the present research have been compared with recently published independent research. It is believed that this research establishes a sound theoretical basis for the validity of various claims of the climatic advantages of different curved-roof forms in hot-arid regions. As part of this research outcome, solar and architectural design-guidelines for curved-roofs are introduced. The research concludes with a discussion of the architectural and solar potential of curved-roof forms, which is believed to be novel contribution to the knowledge and the understanding of curved-roofs solar behaviour and architectural applications in hot-arid climates.

Mayer, Christian Sebastian Jakob. "Numerical Investigation of the Nonlinear Transition Regime in Supersonic Boundary Layers." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/193993.

Full text
Abstract:
The nonlinear transition regime of supersonic boundary layers at low to moderate supersonic Mach numbers (Mach 2-3:5) under wind-tunnel conditions is studied using linear stability theory (LST) and direct numerical simulations (DNS). Two main flow configurations are chosen, a flat-plate boundary layer and a cone boundary layer. Previous investigations of the early nonlinear transition regime have mainly focused on two nonlinear mechanisms, the so-called "oblique breakdown" mechanism and "asymmetric subharmonic resonance". The first mechanism has only been investigated numerically while the second mechanism was first observed in experiments. This dissertation discusses three open questions related to both mechanisms: (i) Can oblique breakdown be identified in old wind-tunnel experiments published in the literature, (ii) what is the most dominant breakdown mechanism for a supersonic boundary layer, oblique breakdown or asymmetric subharmonic resonance, and (iii) does oblique breakdown lead to a fully developed turbulent boundary layer? By adopting the flow conditions and the disturbance generation of a specific experiment from the literature, in which asymmetric subharmonic resonance in a wave train was studied, it was possible to show that oblique breakdown might also have been present in the experiment, although oblique breakdown was not reported by the experimentalists. Hence, this experiment might provide the first experimental evidence of oblique breakdown for a supersonic boundary layer. The second question was addressed by performing DNS of a wave packet. A wave packet is typically used as a model of a broadband disturbance environment. If a nonlinear mechanism is dominant, it should leave strong imprints in the disturbance spectrum of the wave packet. In the DNS of the wave packet, oblique breakdown was visible in the disturbance spectrum while subharmonic resonance played only a minor role. To study the last question, a set of DNS of the entire transition path from the linear regime to the turbulence stage was conducted. Some of these simulations demonstrated that the ow reached turbulence near the downstream end of the computational domain.

Drapeau, Guy. "Comparative numerical study of the intra-vessel flow characteristics between a flat and a cylindrical configuration in a stented wall region." Thesis, McGill University, 2007. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=112566.

Full text
Abstract:
Mechanical stresses and flow dynamics alteration in a stented artery region are known to stimulate intimal thickening and increase the risk of restenosis, the closure of a revascularized artery. Particle imaging velocimetry (PIV) is an optical flow visualization technique that can be used to characterize the local flow dynamics around different stent structures. However, the usual cylindrical stent geometries present visualization difficulties when using an optical measurement technique such as the PIV technique. Using a flat configuration of a stent model presents advantages over the usual cylindrical model. A planar stent model makes data acquisition easier in planes cutting through the model due to its flat geometry that is compatible with the PIV planar flow investigation technique. Furthermore, with the planar stent configuration model velocity measurements and their associated flow features can be done without inducing refraction of the laser light sheet occurring with the cylindrical model's curvature. The refraction of light should be avoided since measurement errors and reflections are the resulting effects of this laser light plane deviation when passing through the curvature of a cylindrical stent model.
The spatial and temporal distribution of the Wall Shear Stress (WSS), which is believed to be of primary importance in the development of restenosis should be comparable between the flat and the cylindrical stent configuration models. The velocity and shear strain rate distributions will be compared between the flat and cylindrical stent configurations using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations in order to analyse the feasibility of using a flat instead of a cylindrical version of the stent model for PIV experiments. It will be shown that for a physiological pulsatile flow the flat model yields results in shear strain rate spatial and temporal distribution that is comparable to the cylindrical model. A more PIV compatible, efficient and less refractive error prone validated flat model would be advantageous when several stent designs influence on the local hemodynamics around the strut geometries have to be studied quantitatively and optimized.

Abstract:

The present study explores the relation between lexis and culture through the analysis of neologisms by borrowing (Haugen, 1972; Guilbert, 1975) in lexical fields. The neologisms are verified in Portuguese in the speech of Italian descendants who live in a rural area of Caxias do Sul, RS, Brazil. The data were collected from 24 sociolinguistic interviews of the BDSer corpus (UCS - DELE - Mestrado em Letras e Cultura Regional). The 42 units which were analyzed are borrowings from Italian dialects still spoken in the area. To establish the relation between cultural practices and lexical innovation, the data are structured in lexical fields which are, in turn, integrated in a network format, according to Biderman (1981). The research implied an ethnographical study in order to make possible the identification of social practices associated to the use of the units, justifying, thus, the organization of the lexical fields. The data were divided into two semantic networks which represent the basic cultural equipment of Bevilácqua, one of the studied communities.

Van, der Merwe Johann Eduard. "Rocking shear wall foundations in regions of moderate seismicity." Thesis, Stellenbosch : University of Stellenbosch, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/1957.

Abstract:
Thesis (MScEng (Civil Engineering))--University of Stellenbosch, 2009.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In regions of moderate seismicity it has been shown that a suitable structural system is created when designing the shear wall with a plastic hinge zone at the lower part of the wall, with the shear walls resisting lateral loads and all other structural elements designed to resist gravity loads. A suitably stiff foundation is required for the assumption of plastic hinge zones to hold true. This foundation should have limited rotation and should remain elastic when lateral loads are applied to the structure. Ensuring a foundation with a greater capacity than the shear wall results in excessively large shear wall foundations being required in areas of moderate seismicity for buildings with no basement level. This study aims to investigate the feasibility of reducing the size of shear wall foundations in areas of moderate seismicity for buildings with no basement level. The investigation is aimed at allowing shear wall foundation rocking and taking into account the contribution of structural frames to the lateral stiffness of the structure. An example building was chosen to investigate this possibility. Firstly, lateral force-displacement capacities were determined for a shear wall and an internal reinforced concrete frame of this investigated building. Nonlinear momentrotation behaviour was determined for the wall foundation size that would traditionally be required as well as for six other smaller foundations. The above capacity curves against lateral loads were then used to compile a simplified model of the structural systems assumed to contribute to the lateral stiffness of the building. This simplified model therefore combined the effect of the shear wall, internal frame and wall foundation. Nonlinear time-history analyses were performed on this simplified model to investigate the dynamic response of the structure with different wall foundation sizes. By assessing response results on a global and local scale, it was observed that significantly smaller shear wall foundations are possible when allowing foundation rocking and taking into account the contribution of other structural elements to the lateral stiffness of the building.

Abstract:
The influence of a 60-day strength training regime on the flat walking Tennessee Walking Horse (TWH) yearling performance was determined using behavioral, physiological, and biomechanical measurements. Four TWH yearlings participated in a 60-day strength training regime. Documentation was made on behavioral responses, and measurements were taken on respiratory rates and standing and flat walking kinematics. Means (SD) were determined for physiological and biomechanical variables, and paired t-tests (P=0.05) were performed. Morphometrics, kinematics, and temporal variables remained constant through training. The flat walk shared similar kinematics and temporal variables with the walk, except for the rhythm, bipedal support, head displacements, and hind fetlock joint motion. While respiratory rates were not significantly different in training response, the TWH yearling demonstrated more efficient respiration compared to the non-gaited trot. Training impact was limited to improved, desirable behavioral responses. Through survey responses by TWH trainers, additional training variables were indicated for future training protocols.

Skorpen, Sarah Anne. "The Application and interpretation of linear finite element analysis results in the design and detailing of hogging moment regions in reinforced concrete flat plates." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/40823.

Abstract:
Structural engineers have used finite element methods for the design of reinforced concrete plate type structures for decades. The theory behind this method is well researched, however, there is still a lack of direction on how to use the information obtained from this type of analysis to practically design reinforced concrete structures for strength and serviceability criteria. The literature study reviews the analysis of concrete plate type structures using traditional and finite element methods and highlights the difference between linear and non-linear finite element analysis. It is apparent that when designing and detailing using a FE analysis, a great deal is left up to engineering judgement, especially in areas of the structures where peak load effects (singularities) are experienced. In this thesis these peak areas are investigated, in an effort to provide insight into the actual behaviour of the structure as opposed to the theoretical results obtained from a FE analysis. The research consists of both numerical, (linear and non-linear FE analyses) and practical experimental work performed on different types of concrete plate type structures, including concrete pad foundations and simply supported flat slabs. The response to loading, i.e: cracking characteristics, softening of the concrete, moment redistribution, variation of the strain in reinforcement across the section, and deflection is observed and discussed. The results show that the traditional simplified methods are adequate with respect to overall strength. Finite element peaks or singularities may be averaged or smoothed without compromising durability and serviceability. Suggestions on how the reinforcement obtained from linear finite element methods be detailed are given.

ABSTRACT: The Gatun Structure, (Latitude N 09° 05&softsign; 58.1", Longitude W 79° 47&softsign; 21.8", situated in the triple-canopy rainforest 10 km to the WSW of the Gamboa and about 2 km south of the Isle of Barbacoas, Republic de Panama), is a partially inundated, quasi-concentric surface feature 2.2 - 3km in diameter, which appears in aerial photographs and in radar imagery as an arcuate chain of islands with a raised center. Although the structure has been heavily weathered and altered, it has retained morphology consistent with complex craters: an elevated circular central uplift 500-600 m in diameter and 50m high, and arcuate boundary ridges (a rim structure?) ranging from 50-100 meters high. Within the central peak, highly altered and fractured siltstone of the Gatuncillo (?) formation (Eocene) (+-) older rocks are uplifted and exposed through surrounding calcareous units of the Caimito formation (Oligocene) and the Las Cascadas formation (Miocene), the major target rocks in the region.
ABSTRACT: Lithologies in the structure include highly fractured siliciclastic rocks (siltstone, sandstones and greywackes), limestones with anomalous spherical glass inclusions, both black and white hypocrystalline glasses (possible melt rocks), lithic fragmental breccias, and melt-bearing breccias (possible impact melt breccias and suevites), some of which contain flow banding and evidence for selective melting of minerals. Three types of spherules (glass, fluid-drop and lithic), a pyroxene-quartz "necklace" disequilibrium structure (coronas), plagioclase feldspars exhibiting mosaicism and partially amorphization, possible liquid immiscibility between melts of calcite and felpspathic glass, as well as decomposition of titanomagnite or ulvospinel, are all petrographic indicators of a hypervelocity impact event.
ABSTRACT: The structure is crosscut by numerous dikes of unshocked basalt and basaltic andesite related to volcanism along the Panamanian segment of the Central American arc to the south. However, the lithologies of the Gatun Structure are chemically inconsistent with the regional volcanic rocks and the unshocked volcanic rocks that crosscut the structure. The lack of an igneous relationship between the Gatun structure and the explosive volcanism of Panamanian arc the presence of classical shock lithologies within the site, and the occurrence of spherules, maskelynite and other disequilibrium shock features in the rocks, an impact origin is our preferred interpretation for the Gatun structure.
