Abstract:
The aim of thise paper is to show how the setting out of the narrative voice determines the historical discourse. The analysis of the narrative voice leads to some considerations about memory and to the examination of recollection in these two novels. That, in turn, allows an exploration of the way in which the historical discourse is constructed. In those cases where the voice in the historical discourse is given to subaltern subjects, they contribute to a more plural history.

Abstract:
Abstract The essay concentrates on two seminal postcolonial novels by authors of African descent: Cristina Ubax Ali Farah’s Madre piccola (2007) (Little Mother: A Novel) and Gabriella Ghermandi’s Regina di fiori e di perle (2007) (Queen of Flowers and Pearls). It argues that these works give expression to an African diasporic urban generation that is changing the literary legacy of the Horn of Africa. The co-presence of multiple genres, with orality appearing as a strong influence on their written narrative forms, places these novels within the larger formation of a black African literary tradition. By looking at these two novels from an Africanist perspective, the essay takes into consideration their plurilingual interventions, the use of glossaries and linguistic borrowings, alongside the presence of Somali and Amharic cultural references. It highlights the authorial perspective as a ‘filial descent’ that addresses the complexity of a postcolonial generational shift in contemporary African literature. By placing these works within an African literary tradition and showing their critical de-centring of this tradition, the essay reconfigures a possible space of cultural autonomy for African postcolonial writing, away from the Italocentric space of discourse that has so far dominated its critical reception in Italy.

Abstract:
This article offers a comparative reading of Marie-Célie Agnant’sLe livre d’Emmaand Gabriella Ghermandi’sRegina di fiori e di perle. Acknowledging the distinct geographical and temporal contexts of the Francophone Caribbean and the Mediterranean, I argue that the authors’ employment of frame narratives and (ch)orality as a mode of collective remembrance and cultural transmission can be read as interventions in the debates on maritime perspectives and the figuration of the sea in contemporary literary studies. This argument is grounded in the mobility, fluidity, and dynamism of oral storytelling and the frame narrative’s pre-novelistic transnational path historically and in the present works, examining the authors’ stylistic and thematic practices as linked to the sea. By putting Agnant and Ghermandi in conversation, this article explores a maritime practice of reading and its potential application to other texts.

Chi avesse percorso la Sacra via tra gli ultimi decenni del I sec. a.C. e l'estate del 64 d.C. si sarebbe trovato in un profano e lussuoso quartiere commerciale: ori, argenti, perle e pietre preziose, aromi e spezie, primizie e cibi ricercati, strumenti musicali, libri, corone di fiori, cortigiane e prostitute — tutte le delizie della vita (come già ai Greci era piaciuto immaginarle) fornite dalla plebe urbana che qui gestiva il sistema di vendite al minuto più famoso e organizzato della città. Anche nelle altre zone intorno al Foro lo scenario non sarebbe stato diverso; nelle botteghe della piazza, lungo le strade circostanti e nei vicini edifici continuava il commercio di dispendiose mercanzie per una clientela di gusti ambiziosi e grandi disponibilità. La tradizione commerciale del luogo era molto antica e risaliva all'età dei re; stando alla tradizione, Tarquinio Prisco aveva per primo utilizzato la valle per attività pubbliche, facendo costruire appositi vani per artigianato e commercio (tabernae circa forum). Quando alla fine del VI sec. a.C. si impiantarono i quartieri della Sacra via, sul fronte degli isolati furono costruite una serie di botteghe tra le quali si aprivano gli ingressi alle domus. Nel periodo più remoto era lo smercio di prodotti alimentari, soprattutto le carni, l'attività primaria forse anche per la presenza di un mercato del bestiame collegato al Foro Boario (beccherie e beccai sono ricordati dal V sec. a.C). Fu negli ultimi decenni del IV sec. a.C. che un aspetto più conveniente (forensis dignitas) si sarebbe affermato per gli interventi di C. Maenius e per la trasformazione delle botteghe da lanienae in argentariae, da macellerie cioè in banchi di cambiavalute, usurai e banchieri, destinati a dominare la piazza fin agli inizi dell'Impero. I commerci più ordinari o le rivendite specializzate non dovettero scomparire del tutto almeno fino alla metà del II sec. a.C: alle tabernae argentariae si mescolavano i negozi di beccai e speziali, chiamati alla greca myropolae, i primi ricordati da Plauto e da Livio nel luogo della basilica Sempronia, i secondi soltanto da Plauto.

Abstract:
This article investigates Gabriella Ghermandi’s novel Regina di fiori e di perle (2007) through two disciplinary perspectives: the first investigates music as a historical and social practice through historical observation of Ghermandi’s characters who reference Ethiopian oral traditions; and the second explores the contemporary dynamics of migration and transnational identity through textual analysis that critiques how storytelling practices are carried into an Italian context. We argue that the novel reflects a dissemination of oral memory across generations and gender and into a postcolonial setting, and that its characters reflect adaptations to institutional and twentieth-century technological change. Crucially, and more specifically, the fate of singing and storytelling in Ghermandi’s fictional world mirrors the author’s experience of moving between orality and recorded and written forms, not as an evolutionary process but as a reciprocal process. Her fictional tradition bearers -- Aron, Yacob, and Mahlet -- embody these malleable modes of transmission, reconfiguring stories for a new generation of Ethiopians and Italians.

The chapter explores the connection between emigration and immigration through a combined reading of texts where demographic movements are defined by colonial routes: Renata Ciaravino’s script for the 2005 play Alexandria directed by Franco Però about adventurous women from the Friuli region who emigrated to Egypt in the 1920s to work as wet nurses and maids anticipates the silent yet profoundly important role of today’s domestic helpers and caretakers in Italy as portrayed by Gabriella Ghermandi’s colonial/post-colonial “The Story of Woizero Bekelech and Signor Antonio,” included in her 2007 novel Regina di fiori e di perle. The two texts highlight the forms of emancipation that women migrants develop as part of relocations abroad as well as the forms of awareness about colonial power relations that they prompt among locals.
