Abstract:
Air quality is a growing public concern in both developed and developing countries. Over the years, there has been an increase in the number of vehicles on major roadways. Vehicles release particulate matter (PM) into the atmosphere, which adversely affects air quality and, consequently, the health of the population. This study was conducted to measure ambient PM concentrations of size 2.5 microns (PM2.5) along two streets in Georgetown, Guyana; namely Regent Street and Woolford Avenue.

Abstract:
Through the Municipal Tree Restoration Program, cooperators planted three tree lilac (Syringa reticulata) cultivars in 13 Pennsylvania and New York, U.S. communities for evaluation as street trees, comparing two in each community. Standardized measurements in years 1, 2, 3, 6, 9, and 12 revealed that ‘Ivory Silk’, ‘Regent’, and ‘Summer Snow’ grew well and remained healthy at all locations. Average heights of the cultivars in the 12th year ranged from 4.8 to 5.1 m (15.8 to 16.8 ft). Differences in average height and crown width were small. In one community, the tallest cultivar, ‘Ivory Silk’, attained an average height of 6.4 m (21.1 ft) in the 12th year. ‘Summer Snow’ grew more slowly in height initially, and ‘Regent’ had narrower crowns. Foliage health ratings were somewhat lower than those of other species in some years, probably reflecting earlier yellowing of leaves in the autumn. If the tree lilac cultivars continue to grow at the same rate, they would not grow into overhead utility wires until the 18th year or later.

Abstract:
Three Japanese tree lilac (Syringa reticulata) cultivars, 2 each in 11 communities, were planted for evaluation as street trees. Cooperators in the Municipal Tree Restoration Program using standardized methods measured them annually for 3 years, and periodically afterwards. 'Ivory Silk', 'Regent', and 'Summer Snow' performed well at all locations. All 3 cultivars grew slowly initially, and their foliage tended to turn yellow in late summer. Height growth of 'Summer Snow', reputed to be slower than 'Ivory Silk', was not slower at all locations.

Carroll, J. L. "Renaissance to Regent Street : Harold Rathbone and the Della Robbia Pottery of Birkenhead." Thesis, Liverpool John Moores University, 2017. http://researchonline.ljmu.ac.uk/7287/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the ways in which the unique creativity brought to late Victorian applied art by the Della Robbia Pottery was a consequence of Harold Rathbone’s extended engagement with quattrocento ceramics. This was not only with the sculpture collections in the South Kensington Museum but through his experiences as he travelled in Italy. In the first sustained examination of the development of the Della Robbia Pottery within the wider histories of the Arts and Crafts Movement, the thesis makes an original contribution in three ways. Using new sources of primary documentation, I discuss the artistic response to Italianate style by Rathbone and his mentors Ford Madox Brown and William Holman Hunt, and consider how this influenced the development of the Pottery. Rathbone’s own engagement with Italy not only led to his response to the work of the quattrocento sculptor Luca della Robbia but also to the archaic sgraffito styles of Lombardia in Northern Italy. Thirdly, the thesis identifies how the Della Robbia Pottery established a commercial presence in Regent Street and beyond, demonstrating how it became, for a short time, an outstanding expression of Italianate style within the British Arts and Crafts Movement.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis is on the transformation of Regent Street in London in the early nineteenth century. Regent Street was conceived within the London Metropolitan Improvements, and its design and execution are considered a different model from every other street. Within its history, Regent Street suffered several transformations, adjustments and at last complete rebuilding. Currently, even if the street has been completely rebuilt, the original Regent Street perspectives left a sign that remains not only in the plan but also in the image and the imaginary of the city as part of Cultural Heritage. In this research, the street is studied in the context of several proposals and ideas of improvements. The study looks to the new and to the old city. The new project enlightens also some aspects of the old city thanks to the kind of sources written and illustrated produced. It enlightens the process of construction by surveying the procedures and the pre-existing conditions. The study discusses time, causes and events that from an idea of project led to a demolition. Finally, it also aims to discuss if this interruption represents a fail within the project. Some questions still remained open by the published literature. The thesis, through the discovery of new documentation by the author, aims first to enlighten the conceiving and constructing processes of Regent Street. It also aims to study the relationships between the project of John Nash and the other projects, the receiving of the street and issues and matters after its construction. Therefore, the most emblematic part of Nash’s project, the Regent’s Quadrant, had never been a specific object of study before. Thanks to an unpublished sketch by hand of Nash found during this research, new inputs emerges in order to understand the peculiar shape of the Regent’s Quadrant. Another corpus of unpublished documents, related to the modifications to the original project of the street, has been found during this research in the archives, then dated and contextualized by the author in order to create a new chronology of the street building site.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Physical activity is one of the most basic human functions, and it is an important foundation of health throughout life. Physical activity apports benefit on both physical and mental health, reducing the risk of several diseases and lowering stress reactions, anxiety and depression. More specifically, physical activity is defined as "any bodily movement produced by skeletal muscles that require energy expenditure" (World Health Organization), including in this definition several activities. Among them, walking has been shown to improve physical and mental well-being in every age group. Despite that, insufficient walking among university students has been increasingly reported, requiring walking promotion intervention. In order to do this, dividing students based on their intention to walk might be useful since the intention is considered as the best predictor of behaviour. In this work, we carried out a study on university students' intention to walk and some of its predictors by exploiting Item Response Theory (IRT) models. In particular, we inspected the predictors of intention by mean of Rating Scale Graded Response Model (RS-GRM). Then we used the Latent Class IRT model to divide students according to their intention to walk, including predictors' scores as covariates. We chose the intention's predictors according to an extension of the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB), with both classic and additional variables. The formers are attitude toward behaviour, subjective norms, and perceived behavioural control, whereas we used risk perception, self-efficacy, anticipation, self-identity and anticipated regret as additional variables. Data was collected administrating a self-report questionnaire to undergraduate students enrolled in the Psychology course at Federico II University of Naples.

Abstract:
<p>The Somers Town Bridge crosses the Regents Canal in central London and was opened in 2017. It is a bridge of extreme simplicity - almost impossibly slender – but meeting the structural demands with the very minimum of materials.</p><p>Designed for cyclists and pedestrians to cross from Camley Street into the King’s Cross development; a landmark redevelopment project by the developer client, Argent (on behalf of King’s Cross Central Partnership Ltd); the bridge spans 38m and is only 1100mm deep at mid-span and 400mm deep at the ends. In keeping with the Victorian heritage of the area, the bridge is unadorned and streamlined, focusing attention on extremely detailed and precise craftsmanship and high-quality materials.</p><p>With such a slender deck form this bridge would normally be sensitive to pedestrian induced vibrations, but for the inclusion of 3 sets of tuned mass dampers at mid-span that are hidden by a cover plate that provides the bridge identification number – 34B.</p><p>This paper presents the story of the bridge development and its response to several challanges.</p>

Abstract:
Bayesian optimization (BO) has been broadly applied to computational expensive problems, but it is still challenging to extend BO to high dimensions. Existing works are usually under strict assumption of an additive or a linear embedding structure for objective functions. This paper directly introduces a supervised dimension reduction method, Sliced Inverse Regression (SIR), to high dimensional Bayesian optimization, which could effectively learn the intrinsic sub-structure of objective function during the optimization. Furthermore, a kernel trick is developed to reduce computational complexity and learn nonlinear subset of the unknowing function when applying SIR to extremely high dimensional BO. We present several computational benefits and derive theoretical regret bounds of our algorithm. Extensive experiments on synthetic examples and two real applications demonstrate the superiority of our algorithms for high dimensional Bayesian optimization.
