Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
During 2006, controversies concerningShari‘aor Islamic law seemed to dominate media reports. From cartoons to apostasy trials,Shari‘awas deemed to be at the core of controversies that attained international notoriety. Furthermore,Shari‘awas implicitly invoked by the Pope in his now infamous speech at Regensberg, in which he referred to the prophet Muhammad and an early Muslim jurist in order to define Europe as Christian and contrary to all that is Islamic. TheShari‘a-related events of 2006 raised fundamental questions not just about whatShari‘ais, but more fundamentally about the place of Muslims and their religious tradition in the international system. This article attempts to survey the aboveShari‘a-related events from 2006 in order to illustrate how references toShari‘a, whether by Muslims or non-Muslims, were embedded within a larger discourse on identity, community, and difference. This survey will not provide an in-depth analysis and critique of theShari‘adoctrines invoked in each case, as that would be beyond its scope. Rather, this article is intended to review the events in light of how “Shari‘a” was characterized, used, and positioned within a larger legal and political discourse. All of them illuminate similar problems of definition and identity that will generally arise in any critical discussion ofShari‘ain the modern day.Shari‘ahas arguably become more than a system of legal rules that can be subjected to critical legal scrutiny. Rather, it is also a symbol of political identity, such that any suggestion of legal reform may create political fall out amongst those committed to certain conceptions of identity, political and otherwise. The controversies concerningShari‘ain 2006 arguably had less to do with legal doctrine, and more to do with how “Shari‘a” can be used and manipulated to facilitate political ends concerning the definition of identity and thereby the separation (and even marginalization) of communities.

Full text
Abstract:
In the late medieval period, a prominent trade route led from Prague through Regensburg to Venice. Silver mined in the Bohemian hinterland was traded for luxury items from the Near East. The Regensburg merchant house of Runtinger made vast profits by buying cloth and luxuries cheaply in Venice—in particular spices from India—and selling them in exchange for comparatively large quantities of silver in Prague. This study treats their ledger, Das Runtingerbuch (1383–1407), as a case study for an analysis of the Prague economy. The Runtingers sold the same types of spices and cloth in Regensburg and in Prague during the same span of years, which makes it possible to use their records as sources with which to compare the two markets. The Runtingers are shown to have market power in the Prague spice market but no market power in the Prague cloth market or the Regensburg markets. The reasons for these market differences are theorized in reference to the socioeconomic positions of the Regensburg and Bohemian elites. Luxury items were traded for silver or silver coins, constituting a continuous drain of silver from Bohemia towards Regensburg, which led to a degree of stagnation in the local economy in Bohemia.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Gifts of music manuscripts continued to serve an important diplomatic function well into the 16th century. This article investigates the production, content and function of two choirbooks prepared by the Benedictine monk Ambrosius Mayrhofer of St Emmeram in Regensburg, which mainly contain sacred music by Orlande de Lassus. They were dedicated to Abbot Jakob Köplin of St Ulrich and Afra in Augsburg (1568) and the city council of Regensburg (1567) respectively. The programmatic opening motet and accompanying illuminations of the Regensburg choirbook suggest that it functioned as a politically motivated gift that helped to ‘harmonize’ the frictions within a city divided by ancient rights and new religious allegiances: Regensburg was a free imperial city with a predominantly Protestant population and council, but also harboured an episcopal see and several nunneries and monasteries (among them St Emmeram), with the Catholic Dukes of Bavaria as close and powerful neighbours. Mayrhofer’s music manuscript projects a conciliatory message that was particularly timely in the late 1560s, when the permission of Eucharistic communion under both kinds (with consecrated bread and wine) offered a short-lived hope of religious compromise.

Abstract:
Abstract The expulsion of the Jewish Community from Regensburg (Ratisbon) in 1519 was one of the last and well-known expulsions of Jews from an Imperial City on the brink of the modern era. Little attention has been paid to a lawsuit between the Regensburg City Council and the Jewish Community which was initiated three years before 1519. Both the City Council and the Jewish Community sent specially authorised delegates as attorneys to attend the trial held in front of the Regiment in Innsbruck/Austria. Hans Hirsdorfer, Hansgraf of Regensburg, was usually dispatched to Innsbruck as the Christian representative while Isaak Walch made the journey in order to represent the Jewish Community. Their powers of attorney, along with other sources such as account books, give us deep insights into their scope of action regarding personal as well as juridical matters.

Abstract:
At present, it is safe to say that alongside the Slavic, Finnish, Scandinavian, Turkic, Baltic, Iranian, Caucasian elements the Jewish element has also played its role in the early period of the ethnocultural history of the vast region to the north of the Black and the Caspian seas. According to the medieval Jewish sources, the members of Judaic communities belonged to various social and even racial groups. This fact sheds light on the Jews whom the Jewish traveler Petahyah of Regensburg met in the Land of Kedar in the 12th century. Petahyah traveled from Regensburg to the Middle East via Prague, Kiev, Crimea and Caucasus. What were the origins of these Jews?
