Abstract:
Pre-inoculating soybean seeds can make sowing faster and provide additional benefits to farmers. However, it needs to guarantee the nitrogen supply to maintain the viability and sustainability of the technique. In this study, we evaluated the agronomic efficiency of SIGNUM® inoculant in the pre-inoculation at 20 and 35 days before sowing chemically treated soybean seeds. Experiments were conducted in four field experiments located at Paraná, Brazil, with a history of soybean cultivation managed under no-tillage systems, with crop rotation according to regional edaphoclimatic conditions. Agronomic efficiency in fields were compared with standard inoculation with a registered product used by farmers. Chemical treatment of soybean seeds with Standak Top® or Maxin XL® + Cruiser® associated with pre-inoculation of the inoculant SIGNUM® for 25 and 30 days reduced the concentration of viable Bradyrhizobium cells recovered from seeds. However, no significant difference was observed regarding nodulation, biological nitrogen fixation, and yield between the soybean inoculated with standard inoculation on farm or pre-inoculation with SIGNUM® in most studied areas.

Abstract:
A serious problem of the Magadan region – the northern region of resource specialization with a leading gold mining industry – during the development of market relations is the ongoing process of devastation of the territory. In order to identify spatial transformations at the level of municipalities in the region, a retrospective analysis of changes in 1990–2020 in key areas of the economy and social sphere was carried out. The specific features of the transformations in the municipal context are: large-scale outflow of population from the areas of the main type of activity; the formation of an urban agglomeration (82% of the population of the region); changes in the spatial localization of economic activity and budgetary self-sufficiency due to the beginning of the development of ore deposits of precious metals by the shift method; deterioration of the standard of living of the population

Abstract:
The article deals with theoretical and methodological issues of the influence of various research approaches to improving the techniques and methods of state regulation of intersectoral / interregional relations and proportions in the areas of primary development of the natural resource potential of the Far Eastern Arctic. Emphasis is placed on the role of infrastructural elements of natural and economic formations, the advanced formation of which acts as a kind of «core», a «framework» for the consistent development of regional complexes, their system formation, self-survival and ensuring economic sustainability at each stage of formation. Traditional and system-evolutionary approaches to regional research, issues of systemic balance of spatial development based on the infrastructure approach and the role of the backbone infrastructure in improving the efficiency of spatial formations are analyzed. An approach to the study of the Far Eastern Arctic territories and water areas in close connection with the «near-Arctic» regions of the North-East, which historically, naturally, together form the North-Eastern mesoregion as part of the Far Eastern macroregion, is put forward and substantiated

Abstract:
A total of seven field studies were conducted in southwestern Ontario from 2018 to 2020 to evaluate S-metolachlor/mesotrione/bicyclopyrone (Acuron Flexi®) and S-metolachlor/atrazine/mesotrione/bicyclopyrone (Acuron®) for the control of glyphosate-resistant (GR) Canada fleabane in corn. Acuron Flexi® and Acuron® applied preplant (PP) controlled GR Canada fleabane 90-97% and 99-100%, respectively. Commonly used PP herbicides in Ontario, dicamba/atrazine + glyphosate and tolpyralate + atrazine + glyphosate controlled GR Canada fleabane 97-99%. Acuron Flexi® and Acuron® applied postemergence (POST) provided 75-92% and 92-99% control of GR Canada fleabane, respectively. Dicamba/atrazine + glyphosate and tolpyralate + atrazine + glyphosate applied POST provided 84-97% and 94-98% control of GR Canada fleabane, respectively. Glyphosate applied POST at 900 ae ha-1 provided only 35-38% control of Canada fleabane in corn. Orthogonal contrasts indicated that herbicides applied PP provided up to 10% greater control of GR Canada fleabane than POST. There was no significant difference between the low and high rates of Acuron® or Acuron Flexi® in controlling GR Canada fleabane. Acuron® controlled GR Canada fleabane 14, 9 and 7% greater than Acuron Flexi® at 4, 8, and 12 WAA, respectively. GR Canada fleabane interference with corn reduced yield up to 42%. However, there was no difference in corn yield between herbicides treatments evaluated. Orthogonal contrasts indicated that reduced GR Canada fleabane interference with PP herbicides evaluated provided 0.9 t ha-1 greater corn yield than the POST herbicides evaluated. There was no significant difference in corn yield with Acuron® or Acuron Flexi® at the lower rate or higher rates. Additionally, Acuron Flexi® applied PP provided a similar corn yield as when applied POST. Based on these results, the use of Acuron® results in improved GR Canada fleabane control than Acuron Flexi® but this did not result in an increase in corn yield. The study concludes that there is potential for Acuron Flexi® for GR Canada fleabane control in corn especially in areas where atrazine use is restricted, however additional weed control tactics may be required for acceptable control.

Abstract:
In Southern Brazil, the National Forests (NF) are protected areas of sustainable use; however, most of them present a significant cover with old plantations of Pinus spp. established to foster commercial forestry. Nowadays, the NF management plans propose the conversion of Pinus stands into native forests. Pinus spp. are worrisome invasive plants whose spontaneous recruitment is a challenge to forest restoration. This paper aims to analyze seed rain and woody community composition in a stand where Pinus trees were eliminated to drive spontaneous regeneration (REG) in an NF in the Southern Atlantic Forest. The seed rain was measured in the restoring area and inside an adjacent Pinus stand (PIN). The tree community structure was analyzed comparatively in REG, PIN, and in a Native Araucaria Forest (NAT). One year after Pinus cutting, the seed rain of woody species was 1,802 and 1,502 seeds m-2.year-1 in REG and PIN, respectively. REG’s seed rain had higher diversity than PIN and absence of Pinus seeds. REG and NAT presented higher diversity of tree species than PIN, although REG had the lowest basal area and tree density. Nevertheless, 188 Pinus seedlings.ha-1 were observed in REG, which indicates that complementary restoration actions are needed.

Abstract:
Are there prospects for diversifying the economy of the country’s «eternally» problematic areas? The question is relevant. The purpose of the work is to study and reveal the main reasons for the systemic lag, to formulate proposals for creating the necessary conditions (mechanisms) for the industrialization of the economy of the depressed East Siberian border region – the Republic of Tyva – which, if effectively implemented, can be used in other similar spaces of the Russian Federation. As a result of the research, the stages of development are shown, the facts of achieving an 87-fold increase in the volume of industrial production in the region from 1945 to 1990, and the main reasons for the lag in subsequent periods are identified. It has been suggested that it is necessary to consider the peculiarities and selective approach when developing regulatory laws regarding problematic Russian border territories. It is proposed to create stimulating legislative and legal conditions for the industrialization of the economy of the Republic of Tyva (in a pilot version) as necessary tools for attracting investment in the production sectors, increasing the volume of gross regional product, increasing the standard of living of the population, including per capita monetary income to the average Russian level, and in in the future – up to 60 thousand rubles per month. The results obtained in the study were partially applied in the development of sectoral and strategic development programs for the region (including the Individual Program for Socio-Economic Development of the Republic of Tyva for 2020–2024) and can subsequently be used in the formation of legislative mechanisms to ensure the effective implementation of diversification programs economy of the country’s problematic border areas

Abstract:
ITC/USA 2006 Conference Proceedings / The Forty-Second Annual International Telemetering Conference and Technical Exhibition / October 23-26, 2006 / Town and Country Resort & Convention Center, San Diego, California
For several decades, the military has used the Multiple Integrated Laser Engagement System (MILES) with a series of iR sensors along a belt fastened to a vehicle for training and simulation. Now, an alternative to this legacy system, a solar rechargeable battery powered wireless IR sensor is replacing wired sensors. The use of short-range RF communications network, allows the MILES sensors strategic placement about a combat vehicle without the umbilical cabling normally required for power and signal coupling from the players processing unit. The RF network operates in the 340 to 380 MHz band, has channeling capability of over 1600 channels, and coexists with the vehicles on board high-powered radios without interference. The wireless sensor implements a custom designed IR sensing amplifier, designed for maximum sensitivity and minimal power dissipation, along with advanced semiconductor IC’s for signal processing and power conversion. Solar recharging enables the sensor to operate for extended time, on a single battery that should last for years without replacement. A proprietary software protocol, developed for communication integrity, is a critical part of the overall system and supports other sensor types and control elements with low data rates for a wireless Vehicle Area Network. The system, successfully installed on several military training platforms, proves to be a viable product for military training and simulation systems for the 21st century.

Abstract:

"A bio-socio-economic simulation model for management of the red sea urchin fishery in Chile." Thesis, University of Stirling, 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/1893/69.

Full text
Abstract:
This study focused on the management of the red sea urchin Loxechinus albus fishery in Chile. The main objective was to design, construct, implement and assess a computer-based simulation model to analyse the biological effects, socio-economic consequences and spatial dynamics resulting from coastal management plans applied to this resource under the system of AMEBR. This was accomplished by using systems dynamics (SD) and geographical information systems (GIS) modelling, in a process of model development, run, optimisation, sensitivity analysis and risk management, and a series of field-based activities carried out at the cove of Quintay. The GIS model developed for allocating sea urchins restocking sites offered a flexible, cost-effective, user-friendly and descriptive technique for support decision-making on management of this species and other benthic resources. Final site selection for restocking was based on the identification, quantification and selection of higher suitability¦availability combinations (site categories). This map showed 16 different suitability¦availability combinations or site categories, ranging from 4¦100 to 8¦100 (suitability points¦availability %). These had an average of 6.44¦69.37 (covering an area of 82.5 Ha overall equivalent to 81.21% of the study area. This site classification demonstrated high heterogeneity between options, and revealed the full variety of alternatives for decision-making. More importantly, the generally high suitability indexes as well as available area emphasised the prospects for restocking sea urchins in this study area. Over and above of the quantitative outcomes obtained from running the GISRM (suitable and available restocking sites) and the BSESM (alternative strategic management plans), the case study-based analysis made it possible to disclose the wider issues related to the red sea urchin coastal management. These results demonstrated the biological inefficiency of traditional size/seasonal restriction-based approach (macro-scenario 1) for sustainable management of the target species. More importantly, final outcomes strongly suggested that a combination of adaptive restocking-based enhancement activities and flexible exploitation constituted a highly attractive approach (macro-scenario 3) for stock management of this fishery in terms of harvestable stock and related incomes. However from the economic analysis, stocking was also found to be economically unfeasible, being a rather cost intensive exercise negatively affected by high natural mortality rates. A single-variable optimisation analysis demonstrated that a higher survival rate is needed to generate sufficient profits to cover major restocking costs and a positive payment, or a cost reduction is essential to make up for the loss. On top to these practical constraints, based on the distinctive modest economic situation prevailing for most Chilean coves and hence their limited capacity to pay for stocking material, unless adequate and constant funding is available to support artisanal associations, they are very unlikely to develop mass release programmes. Given the economic (i.e.: high operating costs) and technical (i.e.: low survival rates) limitations conditioning stocking-based management cost-effectiveness and applicability, wide implementation of mass releases as a major approach for management of the red sea urchin fishery is very unlikely to take place in Chile. This study presents a methodology and offers a tool to design, evaluate and optimise coastal management plans for the red sea urchin in a dynamic, interactive, systematic, integrated and flexible way. The optional strategic management plans proposed on this study may not be applied equally to any AMEBR, as they are the outputs arising from a single cove-specific analysis. Still, the complete methodological framework and analysis procedures developed may be applied to run the BSESM and optimise management of a red sea urchin fishery at any other AMEBR case of study.

There are not clear figures regarding the group of Nigerian women who are lured annually in the sex market in Italy. Facing such a dark number, several questions on the lives of these unknown women arise: What happens to the trafficking victims who do not find any form of social aid or assistance? What happens when the former trafficked women are not able to exit from the trade industry? According to eyewitness accounts as well as official sources, some current madams were trafficked women in the past. They made a career in the trafficking hierarchy and its organised crime groups. The female mobility towards the organisational side of the trafficking offence represents the most striking characteristic of Nigerian trade industry; that is, the victims are included by their persecutors as active part of a more complex criminal project. Such a distinctive element of Nigerian criminal model needs to be analysed through new approaches aimed at highlighting: a) the grey areas in the trade industry; b) the intermediate roles within the victim/offender model; c) the female vertical mobility in the trafficking hierarchy. Through an ethnographic methodological framework, this study wants to analyse the multiple female roles in the trafficking industry.

Lethal control of red foxes is often implemented on restricted areas where immigration from neighbouring sources is expected to make it difficult to keep local fox density low. The justification of lethal wildlife control should include demonstrating its effectiveness. To this end, population dynamics modelling may help to assess the performance of different control strategies in a range of real-world circumstances. A Bayesian state-space model for within-year fox population dynamics was developed that could be fitted to data on daily culling effort and success obtained from gamekeepers on shooting estates in Britain. The estimation model included parameters for key population processes within the culling area: immigration, cub recruitment and non-culling mortality. A simulation-estimation study showed that given a minimum of three years’ data the estimation of fox density and demographic parameters was reliable. Informative priors for the key model parameters were constructed using empirical data and meta-analysis. Data from 22 estates were modelled on a two-weekly time-step. Most estates achieved some suppression of the fox population relative to estimated carrying capacity, but few maintained consistently low densities. The number of foxes killed was a poor indicator of culling effectiveness, highlighting the need for modelling. Estimated immigration rates onto estates were typically high, indicating rapid replacement of culled foxes. There was unexpectedly high spatial variation among estates in estimated carrying capacity and immigration rate. There was evidence from a limited subset of estates that the variable density of released game birds may explain this. The food requirement of the fox population during the nesting period was assumed to indicate predation pressure on wild birds. Alternative culling strategies to reduce this requirement were evaluated using posterior parameter estimates from some estates. Culling concentrated in spring and summer only was more effective than culling uniformly throughout the year. Autumn-only culling was not an effective strategy for wild birds. Open-loop strategies were most effective as culling effort was used all the time. However, closed-loop strategies, where culling effort was conditional on feedback from simulated field-sign searches, achieved similar effects on food requirements using less effort. This revealed trade-offs between effectiveness, cost and animal welfare.

Abstract:
AbstractAfrican urbanisation is at the crossroad. Despite the ever-growing urban challenges and rapid transformation of cities in Africa, there is a positive trend of knowledge production and dynamic policy reforms aiming at a better management of urbanisation and related development fields. The discourse on current African urban challenges and prospects is calling for a change of perspective in understanding urban Africa from its own sociocultural and historical context. Scholars, for instance, (Connell, Plan Theory 13:210–223, 2014), (Robinson, J. (2006) Ordinary cities: between modernity and development. London; New York: Routledge (Questioning cities); Robinson, Int J Urban Reg Res 35:1–23, 2011)) and (Watson, V. (2009) ‘Seeing from the South: Refocusing Urban Planning on the Globe’s Central Urban Issues’, 46(11), pp. 2259–2275; Watson, Plan Theory Pract 15:62–76, 2014b) argue that the diversity and uniqueness of each urban context developing at the intersection of local, regional and global challenges, threats and production of knowledge. In light of this, the chapter gives an insight into the conceptual framing of this book, including the key thematic areas; and an overview of topics covered by the chapters. The book has three thematic areas: planning theories and Models; the state of planning education and capacity; participatory and multi-governance approach towards current urban challenges. Under these themes, the chapter introduces several cases from various cities across Africa.

Abstract:
This paper focuses on a referring expression generation (REG) task in which the aim is to pick out an object in a complex visual scene. One common theoretical approach to this problem is to model the task as a two-agent cooperative scheme in which a ‘speaker’ agent would generate the expression that best describes a targeted area and a ‘listener’ agent would identify the target. Several recent REG systems have used deep learning approaches to represent the speaker/listener agents. The Rational Speech Act framework (RSA), a Bayesian approach to pragmatics that can predict human linguistic behavior quite accurately, has been shown to generate high quality and explainable expressions on toy datasets involving simple visual scenes. Its application to large scale problems, however, remains largely unexplored. This paper applies a combination of the probabilistic RSA framework and deep learning approaches to larger datasets involving complex visual scenes in a multi-step process with the aim of generating better-explained expressions. We carry out experiments on the RefCOCO and RefCOCO+ datasets and compare our approach with other endto-end deep learning approaches as well as a variation of RSA to highlight our key contribution. Experimental results show that while achieving lower accuracy than SOTA deep learning methods, our approach outperforms similar RSA approach in human comprehension and has an advantage over end-to-end deep learning under limited data scenario. Lastly, we provide a detailed analysis on the expression generation process with concrete examples, thus providing a systematic view on error types and deficiencies in the generation process and identifying possible areas for future improvements.

Full text
Abstract:
The overall cooling effectiveness(ϕ) is used to provide the actual temperature on the surface of the turbine vane, which is measured using IR thermography with high resolution and dynamic range in current study. The effects of geometrical parameters of turbine vane leading edge on ϕ _are experimentally and numerically investigated. Three specimens of turbine vanes are investigated including two wall thicknesses (2.28mm,5.7mm) and two film cooling hole diameters (0.95mm,0.66mm). In addition, the total areas of the film holes outlets for specimens are the same to ensure similar flow resistance characteristics. The experiments are modelled in a low-temperature state(Tg=583K, Tc=293K). The mainstream Reynold number (Reg) is 165,000, and four typical mass flow ratios (MFR) are designed, 0.35%, 0.52%, 0.69% and 1.02%. Results show that: the hole diameter plays a pivotal role on ϕ _distirbution. Two vanes with smaller diameter of film hole have higer overall cooling effectiveness than the model with larger diameter at all MFR conditions. The ϕ _distributions are nonhomogeneous along the streamwise and lateral direction, especially at low MFR conditions for three vanes. This is mainly caused by the uneven coolant flow distribution at low MFR. However, the ϕ _distribution will be more uniform as the MFR increases due to the denser coolant outflow at each hole row. Furthermore, the influence of wall thicknesses on ϕ _is different as MFR increases from 0.35% to 1.02%, and the ϕ _of thicker wall model has a greater increase.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Turbulent flow in a homogeneous porous medium was investigated through the use of numerical methods by employing the Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) modeling technique. The focus of our research was to study how microscopic vortices in porous media flow influence the heat transfer from the solid obstacles comprising the porous medium to the fluid. A Representative Elementary Volume (REV) with 4 × 4 cylindrical obstacles and periodic boundary conditions was used to represent the infinite porous medium structure. Our hypothesis is that the rate of heat transfer between the obstacle surface and the fluid (qavg) is strongly influenced by the size of the contact area between the vortices and the solid obstacles in the porous medium (Avc). This is because vortices are regions with low velocity that form an insulating layer on the surface of the obstacles. Factors such as the porosity (φ), Pore Scale Reynolds number (Rep), and obstacle shape of the porous medium were investigated. All three of these factors have different influences on the contact area Avc, and, by extension, the overall heat transfer rate qavg. Under the same Pore Scale Reynolds number (Rep), our results suggest that a higher overall heat transfer rate is exhibited for smaller contact areas between the vortices and the obstacle surface. Although the size of the contact area, Avc, is affected by Rep, the direct influence of Rep on the overall heat transfer rate qavg is much stronger, and exceeds the effect of Avc on qavg. The Pore Scale Reynolds number, Rep, and the mean Nusselt number, Num, have a seemingly logarithmic relationship.

Abstract:
Improper use of data must be avoided, as the consequences of improper use of data can be catastrophic. In the design of information systems, ethical focus areas could help combat improper use of data. Currently, more research is available on ethical focus areas in Data Mining compared to related research fields of Data Mining, such as Decision Mining and Process Mining. For this paper, a theoretical review was conducted to identify ethical focus areas of Data Mining and their possible solutions. Seven ethical focus areas were identified focussing on privacy, collection of personal information, consent, unpredictability and inaccuracy, group profiling and biased data. Future research is needed on the ethical focus areas, to validate the possible solutions related to these ethical focus areas in the context of related research fields of Data Mining

Full text
Abstract:
Upstream of the confluence of the Red River, Atchafalaya River, and ORCC Outflow Channel are vast low-lying flat areas on both sides of the Lower Red River. During times of high water on the Lower Red—whether from upstream water in the Red or from the ORCC Outflow Channel—enormous amounts of water flow over the natural riverbanks and flood this land. The loss of this water from the river into storage affects the operation of the ORCC, which in turn affects the stages and flows down the Atchafalaya and Mississippi Rivers. An improved understanding of this area and how water is stored during flood events is required to inform ORCC water management operations. Hydraulic analyses provide a basis to assess the changes in water levels, current directions and velocities, and flow rates for the assessment area. The hydraulic model HEC-RAS is used to expand on existing models of the area and to help overcome gaps in data. Understanding the processes of how water leaves the Red River channel, the volume and timing of the water moving into storage, and when the storage area begins to drain, will greatly inform the water managers and operators of the ORCC.

This project is designed to strengthen the bridge between research and practice through which leading science developed throughout the University of Missouri system (UM) is delivered to its communities, particularly in rural areas. MU Extension’s delivery systems offer immense potential for knowledge translation given they reach every community in the state, but there are infrastructure barriers connecting research to practice that require intentionality before these systems can realize their potential. A focus area of the work is closing the health and health care equity gap with high-touch community health approaches delivered through Extension educational programs that link Missouri communities with university research. The protocol’s creation represents the confluence of research and scholarship, clinical training and practice, and public and community health needs. [Excerpted paragraph from p. 6]

Perkins, Dustin. Invasive exotic plant monitoring at Colorado National Monument: 2019 field season. Edited by Alice Wondrak Biel. National Park Service, July 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.36967/nrr-2286650.

Full text
Abstract:
Invasive exotic plant (IEP) species are a significant threat to natural ecosystem integrity and biodiversity, and controlling them is a high priority for the National Park Service. The North-ern Colorado Plateau Network (NCPN) selected the early detection of IEPs as one of 11 monitoring protocols to be implemented as part of its long-term monitoring program. This report represents work completed at Colorado National Monument during 2019. During monitoring conducted June 12–19, a total of 20 IEP species were detected on monitoring routes and transects. Of these, 12 were priority species that accounted for 791 separate IEP patches. IEPs were most prevalent along riparian areas. Yellow sweetclover (Melilotis officinale) and yellow salsify (Tragopogon dubius) were the most commonly detected priority IEPs along monitoring routes, representing 73% of all priority patches. Patches of less than 40 m2 were typical of nearly all priority IEP species except yellow sweetclover. A patch management index (PMI) was created by combining patch size class and percent cover for each patch. In 2019, a large majority of priority IEP patches were assigned a PMI score of low (46%) or very low (50%), indicating small and/or sparse patches where control is generally still feasible. This is similar to the numbers for 2017, when 99% of patches scored low or very low in PMI. Seventy-eight percent of tree patches were classified as seedlings or saplings, which require less effort to control than mature trees. Cheatgrass (Anisantha tectorum) was the most common IEP recorded in transects, found in 30–77% of transects across the different routes. It was the only species found in transects on all monitoring routes. When treated and untreated extra areas near the West Entrance were compared, the treated area had comparable or higher lev-els of IEPs than the untreated area. When segments of monitoring routes conducted between 2003 and 2019 were compared, results were mixed, due to the different species monitored in different time periods. But in general, the number of IEPs per 100 meters is increasing or remaining constant over time. There were notable increases in IEP patches per 100 meters on several routes in 2019: field bindweed (Convolvulus arvensis) along East Glade Park Road; Siberian elm (Ulmus pumila) in Red Canyon; yellow salsify along East Glade Park Road, No Thoroughfare Canyon, No Thoroughfare Trail, and Red Canyon; and yellow sweetclover in No Thoroughfare Canyon and Red Canyon. Network staff will return to re-sample monitoring routes in 2021.
