Abstract:
Published Article
According to Wills reflexology entails the division of the body into ten zones, concentrating on the pressure points on the feet, with each foot representing five zones (2006: Online). Colour therapy uses the vibrational frequencies of colour to restore the client's health. Colour zone therapy on the other hand, is a combination of reflexology and colour therapy. Zone refers to the working of key points on the feet, where colour refers to the assessment of the condition and treating it with the correct colour's frequency (Gimbel, 1993: 2-3). Reflexology uses a physical stimulus and colour therapy, emotional stimulus, thus colour zone therapy addresses both. In this study the researcher's objective was to investigate treatments with reflexology compared with treatments of colour zone therapy, by treating chronic sinusitis to explore the influence of colour on the outcome of reflexology treatments. Ten chronic sinusitis-suffering clients were treated with reflexology in a white cubicle. Another ten clients were treated with colour zone therapy (thus colour therapy as well as reflexology). They had indigo coloured paper in their hands. Results were obtained as case studies, with clients reporting how they felt before and after each treatment. Each client received five treatments. The results indicated that the reflexology clients did experience an improvement after the fourth treatment. By the fifth treatment three of the ten clients had discharged some mucus. However, clients treated with colour zone therapy showed results after the second treatment. At the fourth treatment, already seven of the ten colour zone therapy clients had discharged a large amount of mucus. This concludes that treating a condition with colour, in combination with another treatment provides better and quicker results.

Abstract:
Two thirds of pregnant women experience low back pain and one fifth experience pelvic pain, which can adversely affect daily lives. Reflexology may be helpful for general low back pain. Therefore, the aim of this research was , to investigate reflexology for the management of low back and/ or pelvic pain (LBPP) during pregnancy. Ninety primiparous women, were randomised to receive usual care, six reflexology or footbath treatments. Primary outcome measures were the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) for pain frequency and intensity. Saliva samples were analysed for beta endorphin and cortisol concentration. Heart rate (HR), blood pressure (BP), intervention expectations and satisfaction and labour duration were recorded. Sixty-four women completed the trial. Adherence to the reflexology, usual care and footbath groups were 80%, 83.33% and 50% respectively. The reflexology group demonstrated a Mean Clinically Important Change in VAS pain frequency (1.64cm). Second stage of labour was significantly shorter (p=O.05) in the reflexology group compared to usual care (44.3 minutes). Beta endorphin and cortisol were reduced along with a significant reduction in systolic blood pressure (p=O.03) in the reflexology group but an increase in diastolic blood pressure (p=O.Ol) was observed in the footbath group. Reflexology was more helpful than footbaths (p=O.OOl), however, treatment satisfaction in both groups was high (p=O.07). Findings indicate a fully powered RCT in this area is feasible; however, a footbath is not a suitable sham treatment. The results suggest that reflexology acted to reduce pain, disrupting the cycle of pain and stress, leading to a reduction in BP, cortisol and beta endorphin. It is likely that reflexology acts by deactivating the HPA axis and sympathetic function and enhances the vagal pathways, having an overall effect on the psychoneuroimmunological functioning. Reflexology may be helpful for managing pregnancy related LBPP, by reducing physiological and psychological stress and enhancing positive emotions.

Abstract:
Reflexology is one of the top six complementary therapies used in the UK. Reflexologists claim that massage to specific points of the feet increases blood supply to referred or 'mapped' organs in the body. Empirical evidence to validate this claim is scarce. This three-phase RCT measured changes in haemodynamic parameters in subjects receiving reflexology treatment applied to specific areas of the foot which are thought to correspond to the heart (intervention) compared with reflexology applied to other areas on the foot which are not (control).

Abstract:
Background The incidence of hypertension is increasing in developing countries such as Thailand (Chaiteerapan et al 1997; Ministry of Public Health 2001; National Library of Thailand Cataloguing in Publication Data 2001) as a result of sociological, political and economic changes. These changes are producing enormous alterations in peoples lifestyles, following similar trends in western countries (National Economic and Social Development Board 1997). Negative changes in food consumption, alcohol consumption, level of physical activity, smoking, stress and tension have led to an increase in chronic health problems for Thai people (National Economic and Social Development Board 1997). Age, gender, ethnicity, genetic background, family health history and hyperlipidaemia are likely to influence hypertension (Kaplan, Lieberman & Neal 2002; Mancia et al 2002; Manger & Gifford 2001; National Heart Foundation of Australia 2003). It has been found that health care professionals and patients with chronic disease have increased their use of complementary therapies to help relieve uncomfortable symptoms and suffering (Long, Huntley & Ernst 2001). Foot reflexology is a well known complementary therapy which claims to help the body achieve homeostasis (Byers 2001; Dougans 2002). It is believed that pressing specific areas on the feet related to specific glands or organs of the body can help these glands and organs to function at their peak, allowing the body to heal itself (Byers 2001; Dougans 2002). The principle difference between massage or touch and foot reflexology is that foot reflexology provides not only the relaxation effect obtained from massage or touch is said to also improve bodys immunity contributing to healing process (Byers 2001;Dougans 2002). Foot reflexology has been scientifically researched in many studies to explore the claimed benefits (Bishop 2003; Kohara et al 2004; Oleson & Flocco 1993; Siev-Ner et al 2003; Yang 2005). Some studies have supported its ability to reduce anxiety and pain (Gambles, Crooke & Wilkinson 2002; Launso, Brendstrup & Arnberg 1999; Stephenson, Dalton & Carlson 2003; Stephenson, Weinrich & Tavakoli 2000). However, there has been little scientific evidence to support the claim that foot reflexology can reduce blood pressure and serum lipids, and can improve the quality of life in patients with hypertension (Hodgson 2000; Milligan et al 2002; Park & Cho 2004). The purpose of this study was to begin to fill this gap by investigating the influence of foot reflexology on blood pressure, serum lipids and quality of life. Aim The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of foot reflexology on reducing blood pressure in patients with hypertension. To this end, patients receiving reflexology were compared with patients receiving a light foot massage, thus controlling for any effects contributed by massage or touch alone. Null hypotheses 1. There is no difference in mean blood pressure level between the foot reflexology group and the light foot massage group at the end of four weeks of treatment. 2. There is no difference in mean low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and triglyceride levels between the foot reflexology group and the light foot massage group at the end of four weeks of treatment.3. There is no difference in mean quality of life scores between the foot reflexology group and the light foot massage group at the end of four weeks of treatment. Sample A sample size of 128 was required to yield a power of 80%, if the difference in mean diastolic blood pressure between the two groups was 5 mmHg. One hundred twenty eight patients with hypertension who attended the hypertensive clinic in the medical outpatients department of Phramongkutklao Hospital, Bangkok, Thailand were enrolled and participated in the study. Methods Data collection This study used a randomized controlled trial design. Participants were randomly allocated into one of two groups 64 participants in the foot reflexology group (intervention) and 64 in the light foot massage group (control). Data collection took place over 4 months between 26 July and 9 December 2004. Ethics approval was obtained from both the university and hospital ethics committees. Prior to randomization, participants were asked to complete a demographic data questionnaire and the World Health Organization Quality of Life-BREF (WHOQOLBREF) (World Health Organization 1996) questionnaire. Blood was drawn to test LDL cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Using an intervention protocol based on previous literature (Byers 2001), participants in the foot reflexology group received their usual medical treatment and a 50-minute foot reflexology treatment twice a week for four weeks. Participants in the light foot massage group received their usualmedical treatment and a 30-minute light foot massage session without pressure on specific reflexology areas twice a week for four weeks. Blood pressure was recorded before and after each treatment. At the end of the study, participants were asked to complete the WHOQOL-BREF (World Health Organization 1996) again and blood was once more drawn to test LDL cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Data analysis An independent samples t-test followed by analysis of covariance was used to test for difference in mean diastolic blood pressure between treatment groups both unadjusted and adjusted for baseline values respectively. Descriptive statistics were used to present the demographic data. Results Demographic data Control and intervention groups were similar in gender, age, educational background, economic factors, lifestyle characteristics, co-morbidities and medical treatments. Demographic data which were substantially different between groups were marital status, the length of time experiencing hypertension and the length of time having treatment for hypertension. The study showed that fewer participants in the foot reflexology group (57.8%) were married than in the light foot massage group (70.3%). The foot reflexology group also had a higher rate (32.8%) of divorced/separated/widowed compared with the light foot massage group (20.3%). Participants in the light foot massage group had almost nine times the number of participants who had had hypertension for more than 15 years, and almost eight times the number of participants who had been having treatment for hypertension for more than 15 years, compared with those in the foot reflexology group. Outcome variables For both the unadjusted and adjusted analyses, there was no statistically significant difference between treatment groups post-intervention. Conclusions The results from this study did not support the claim that foot reflexology can decrease blood pressure, LDL cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Similarly, there was no evidence that it could improve the quality of life in patients with hypertension.

Abstract:
This is an integrative literature review of the utilisation of reflexology as complementary and alternative treatment modality in adults with chronic disease. Anecdotal evidence has claimed potential health benefits of reflexology for patients with various chronic diseases. In this study, selected databases that were accessible were searched using keywords such as reflexology therapy, zone therapy and combinations thereof. Databases such as SA Nexus, SAePublications, ProQuest, Web of Knowledge, EBSCOhost Platform, ScienceDirect, Cochrane Library and Google Advanced Scholar were searched for primary studies and reviews of primary studies from 2000 until the end of 2008 (N = 1171). Primary experimental and non-experimental studies in any language with an abstract in English were identified. Only studies that complied with the inclusion criteria were reviewed and appraised (n = 35) for study quality with appropriate tools from the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme (CASP) and the American Dietetic Association's (ADA) Evidence analysis manual. Evidence extraction, analysis and synthesis were done to review available evidence by means of the evidence class rating and evidence grading of strength prescribed in the ADA's manual. Study findings represent a statistical significant reduction in the frequency of seizures of patients with intractable epilepsy, an improvement of sensory and urinary symptoms associated with multiple sclerosis and a clinical significant reduction of pain and anxiety in patients with cancer and fibromyalgia syndrome to increase overall well-being and quality of life. No statistical significant evidence was reported on benefits of reflexology for irritable bowel syndrome, menopausal symptoms, chronic low back pain and asthma. Thus there appears to be fair evidence of the effectiveness of reflexology, in addition clinical evidence supports the utilisation of reflexology to promote well-being and quality of life in adults with chronic disease.

Wu, Bao-Kuan. "Effect of foot reflexology on dysmenorrhoea in adolescents: A randomised controlled trial in Taiwan." Thesis, Griffith University, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10072/365413.

Full text
Abstract:
Dysmenorrhoea is the most common gynaecological complaint among adolescent females. Although many drugs are available and approved for the use in treatment of primary dysmenorrhoea, Taiwanese adolescents are influenced by traditional Chinese beliefs and tend to choose more natural ways to manage primary dysmenorrhoea. Foot reflexology, a non-pharmacological folk therapy, has been claimed to alleviate primary dysmenorrhoea. To date, no randomised trials have been conducted to investigate the effect of foot reflexology on primary dysmenorrhoea. This randomised controlled trial was designed to examine the effect of Father Josef‘s method of reflexology on primary dysmenorrhoea in Taiwanese adolescent students. Data were collected from three secondary high schools and one junior college in 2008 in Taiwan with approval from Griffith University Human Research Ethics Committee. Participants aged 15 to 19 years with a pain score of 40 or more on the 0 to 100 Numeric Rating Scale for Period Pain (NRS for Period Pain) were asked to participate. One-hundred and twenty-two adolescent students were randomly allocated to a reflexology group or a massage group. The reflexology group received Father Josef‘s method of foot reflexology (n = 61); the massage group received foot massage with light touch (n = 61). Both groups received one treatment of 30 minutes duration within the first 48 hours of menstruation for two menstrual periods. Outcome measures included the Demographic Information Questionnaire, the NRS for Period Pain, the Chinese Menstrual Distress Questionnaire, the Chinese Menstrual Attitudes Questionnaire, and the Self-Care Scale for Dysmenorrhic Adolescents, along with eardrum temperature, heart rate and blood pressure. Ninety-seven participants completed this study with 50 in the foot reflexology group and 47 in the foot massage group. The average age of menarche was 12.2 years. The majority of adolescents experienced their first episode of painful menstruation within two years after menarche. In addition, the prevalence of dysmenorrhoea positively correlates to a family history of dysmenorrhoea. The physician consultation rate in this study (46.7%) is higher than in previous studies (7.1% to 23.4%). Adolescents‘ attitudes toward menstruation and self-care behaviours for dysmenorrhoea are multidimensional and influenced by cultural factors, health beliefs, educational background and menstrual discomfort. The use of the Internet to search for health information among Taiwanese adolescents is becoming more popular. The study also found that the most frequently reported methods perceived as effective in managing dysmenorrhoea were heat application, rest and pain medication. In addition, Taiwanese adolescents most frequently turned to their mother for advice regarding methods for dealing with dysmenorrhoea. Among health professionals, nurses are most frequently asked for help by adolescents with dysmenorrhoea. Using a mixed between–within subjects analysis of variance, NRS for Period Pain decreased significantly over the two treatment sessions and the six menstrual cycles in both the foot reflexology group and foot massage group. In treatment session 2, changes for NRS for Period Pain were statistically significantly lower in the foot reflexology group as compared with the foot massage group. Menstrual distress symptoms, heart rate and systolic blood pressure decreased significantly over time but group differences were not significant. Furthermore, there were no significant differences observed between the two groups on eardrum temperature or diastolic blood pressure; however, a within-group comparison identified that foot reflexology significantly elevated eardrum temperature and reduced diastolic blood pressure immediately after the treatment. In comparison, an increase in eardrum temperature in the foot massage group was not significant. Furthermore, a decrease in diastolic blood pressure in the foot massage group was significant in treatment session 1, but it was not significant in treatment session 2. No serious adverse events occurred during this study. Additional benefits of receiving foot reflexology are relaxation, improving quality of sleep and improving bowel habits. In conclusion, this study has contributed to the body of knowledge about gynaecological characteristics, attitudes toward menstruation, self-care behaviours in managing dysmenorrhoea and effect of foot reflexology on Taiwanese adolescents with primary dysmenorrhoea. Although duplication of this study is needed, this is the first controlled study to provide evidence that foot reflexology and foot massage can be effective non-invasive interventions for relieving dysmenorrhoea. Findings from this study provide nurses with additional nursing interventions to offer young women with primary dysmenorrhoea.

Abstract:
Reflexology incorporates the use of specific pressure techniques to the feet, hands or ears. There are many anecdotal claims for reflexology in the treatment of various conditions such as migraine, arthritis and multiple sclerosis but very little clinical evidence exists for reflexology in the management of pain per se. Pain is a worldwide concern and 10% of the UK population suffer from chronic pain, making demands on an already overstretched NHS service. Members of the public seek more control over their wellbeing and there is a growing trend towards complementary medicine. Reflexology, one of the many complementary medicine modalities available, may be a suitable adjunct to pain management by helping to reduce the number of medications and associated side-effects from continued drug use. This research therefore, enters at a time when the call for scientific evidence is sought and offers new evidence for the efficacy of reflexology in acute pain. The principal aims of these experiments were to investigate the acute effects of: i) Chapter 3 - standard reflexology on changes in basal physiological parameters, such as blood pressure (mmHg), heart rate (bpm), and core body temperature (°C). Fourteen healthy subjects were recruited to a crossover design study in which they participated in one 30 min session of standard reflexology and one 30 min session of sham Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) given one week apart. The results showed a significant decrease in heart rate (bpm) during and post standard reflexology when compared to a sham TENS (control). ii) Chapter 4 - standard reflexology in an ice pain experiment. Outcome measures were recorded for (a) pain threshold (s) i.e. the time it takes for the subject to find the experience painful, (b) pain tolerance (s) i.e. the time it takes until the subject can no longer keep his/her hand in the ice water and c) heart rate (bpm) pre and post ice plunge. Sixteen healthy volunteer subjects were recruited to this crossover design study to participate in one 45 min session of standard reflexology and one 45 min session of sham TENS (control) given one week apart. The results revealed a significant increase in both pain threshold (s) and tolerance (s) following standard reflexology when compared to the sham TENS (control). There was also a decrease in heart rates (bpm) following standard reflexology prior to and post ice immersions which were maintained for 60 min, although the effect was non-significant for the post ice immersion. iii) Chapter 5a - standard and light reflexology in an ice pain experiment. Thirty healthy volunteer subjects participated in this study to compare the effects of standard and light reflexology with a ‘no treatment’ control. Outcome measures were recorded for pain threshold (s), pain tolerance (s) and post treatment pre and post ice plunge heart rate (bpm). Subjects participated in one 45 min session each of standard and light reflexology and one 45 min control session consisting of no treatment given one week apart in a Latin square design. The results showed a significant increase in pain threshold following both standard and light reflexology and significant increases in pain tolerance for standard but not light reflexology. Pre-ice plunge, post treatment heart rates (bpm) were significantly lower following both standard and light reflexology and there was a transient decrease in heart rate post-ice plunge, post treatment for light reflexology. iv) Chapter 5b – An alternative statistical analysis on the effects of standard and light reflexology in an ice pain experiment. This chapter represents an alternative method of analysing the data where there are large interindividual variations in responses. The results showed significant biphasic responses, e.g. nociceptive and anti-nociceptive to the effects of both standard and light reflexology when compared to a no treatment control. These results extend the observations made in Chapter 4 and 5a. v) Chapter 6 - mechanical reflexology in an ice pain experiment. Twelve young and healthy subjects were recruited to participate in one 20 min session of mechanical reflexology and one 20 min session of sham TENS (control), give one week apart in a crossover design. Outcome measures were recorded for pain threshold (s), pain tolerance (s) and heart rate (bpm). The results showed no significant effects of mechanical reflexology treatment when compared to sham TENS (control) on either pain threshold or pain tolerance, although there were some transient benefits of mechanical reflexology on pain threshold during stimulation and on pain tolerance post stimulation. vi) Chapter 7 - repeated standard reflexology treatments in an ice pain experiments In this experiment eleven healthy female subjects were recruited to participate in three consecutive weeks of 45 min standard reflexology and three consecutive weeks of 45 min sham TENS (control). The treatments were given in a crossover fashion and there was a minimum one week break between treatments and crossover. Outcome measures were recorded for pain threshold (s), pain tolerance (s), pre and post ice plunge heart rate (bpm) and blood pressure (mmHg). The results showed no significant differences between the two treatments, but there was a general trend for an increase in the mean pain threshold and tolerance following standard reflexology. There was however, some drop-off in the effect on pain tolerance. This result should be interpreted with caution due to the small number of subjects and the large interindividual variations. Furthermore, there were no cumulative effects of treatment on either blood pressure or heart rate. vii) Miscellaneous Chapter – pressure applications in reflexology. This study was carried out using the Tactilus® Freeform Sensor system to measure the effects of three distinct pressure modes of reflexology: a) static, b) standard dynamic and c) light dynamic on four different regions of the foot sole: i) medial edge, ii) arch, iii) heel and iv) the ankle on different foot types. The data showed variations in average maximum pressure values according to the foot type and area treated. Conclusion Manually applied reflexology increases pain threshold and tolerance which seems to be independent of any changes in autonomic function.

Abstract:
This study aimed to evaluate the effect of foot reflexology on the tissue integrity of the feet of people with the nursing diagnosis \"Risk For Impaired Skin Integrity\". This was a randomized, controlled and masked trial, developed in an outpatient clinic of specialties at Ribeirão Preto, State of Sao Paulo. Given the susceptibility to the nursing diagnosis mentioned, the population of this study consisted of people with diabetes mellitus. In the pre-test (T0) were collected the characterization variables, evaluated the result of nursing \"Tissue Integrity: skin and mucous membranes\" and their indicators related to the feet of people with diabetes mellitus (accompanied by their definitions), established the diagnosis of nursing \"Risk For Impaired Skin Integrity\", applied the Nursing Diagnosis Accuracy Scale (version 2) and completed the evaluation instrument of the eligibility criteria. Eligible participants were divided into Intervention Group and Control Group. The Intervention Group received, in addition to the service routine information, 16 sessions of foot reflexology, since the Control Group received only routine information service. The post-test (T1) and the post-test (T2) occurred after the scope of the implementation of 12 and 16 sessions of foot reflexology, respectively, and consisted of the evaluation of nursing outcome \"Tissue Integrity: skin and mucous membranes\" and their indicators related to the feet of people with diabetes mellitus (accompanied by their definitions). The final sample consisted of 78 participants, 40 of the Intervention Group and 38 of the Control Group. In the post-test (T1) and post-test (T2), when comparing the groups, there were differences in the scores of nursing outcome \"Tissue Integrity: skin and mucous membranes\" (T1 and T2: p < 0.001) and indicators: Skin temperature (T1 and T2: p < 0.001) Hydratation (T1 and T2: p < 0.001), Texture (T1 and T2: p < 0.001), Tissue Perfusion (T1: p value = 0.008; T2: p value = 0.001), Hair growth on skin (T1: p = 0.039; T2: p = 0.031), Skin scaling (T1 and T2: p <0.001) and Edema (T1 and T2: value p < 0.001). In addition, when comparing the post-test (T1) and the post-test (T2) with pretest (T0), the Intervention Group showed improvement in the scores of these indicators, while the Control Group worsened or maintenance. In the other indicators - Sensation, Elasticity, Thickness, Skin integrity, Abnormal pigmentation, Skin lesions, Scar tissue, Skin flaking, Erythema, Blanching, Necrosis, Induration and Varicose veins - in the absence of differences between the groups in the post- test (T1) and post-test (T2) was not observed effect of therapy. By comparison, however, the post-test (T1) and the post-test (T2) with pretest (T0), the indicators \"Sensation\", \"Elasticity\", \"Induration\" and \"Varicose veins\", the Intervention Group showed improvement in scores, while the Control Group showed worse in score of \"Elasticity\" and maintenance of the others. The effect size of the intervention on the tissue integrity of the feet of the participants was of great magnitude in both the post-test (T1) (ES = 1,370) and the post-test (T2) (ES = 1.538), suggesting maintenance of therapy effect of 12 sessions with 16 sessions. Concludes that, by highlight the effects of foot reflexology on the tissue integrity of the feet of people with \"Risk For Impaired Skin Integrity\", this research deepened knowledge about the therapy and its use as a possible health care strategy. At the same time, the use of conceptual definitions and definitions and operational magnitudes in the evaluation of the effects of the tested intervention contributed to greater reliability of the findings, since the use of such definitions help in the reduction of subjective interpretations of the nursing outcome indicators \"Tissue Integrity: skin and mucous membranes\"

Abstract:
Constipation is common in childhood, rarely life threatening and' therefore might be expected to have little impact on health care provision. The reality is somewhat different, with many children requiring medical and nursing management for this condition that causes great misery and discomfort. Many families consider the use of complementary and or alternative medicine (CAM) as a treatment option when conventional treatment 'fails'. The use of Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) in paediatrics is increasing and is popular with parents/carers but there is currently little evidence to support its use in general and no randomised clinical trials investigating the use of reflexology in children in particular. The thesis presents the development of a randomised controlled study to investigate the effectiveness of reflexology when taught to parents and delivered as adjunct to standard treatment. It includes a systematic review of the literature pertaining to childhood idiopathic constipation and reflexology; the rationale for the choice of method and the development of the clinical trial. The study that was undertaken compared the way in which children with chronic idiopathic constipation (Cre) respond to reflexology treatment or foot massage when these treatments are taught to their parents and carers, and used as part of their standard medical treatment. The optimal way to manage childhood idiopathic constipation is still unknown however this trial has demonstrated that reflexology has a role in improving outcomes for children when taught to parents and used as an adjunct to standard treatment. This is the only RCT of reflexology as practised by parents in paediatric practice to date and further well-designed studies are needed.

Abstract:
Two thirds of pregnant women experience low back pain and one fifth experience pelvic pain that can adversely affect women's lives. There is evidence demonstrating benefits of reflexlogy for managing general low back pain. Therefore, this research aimed to investigate the feasibility of conducting a randomised controlled trial (RCT) investigating reflexology in the management of low back and/ or pelvic pain (LBPP) during pregnancy. Overall 90 primiparous women (mean age 30.9 +/- 5.6 years) participated in a feasibility RCT in an inner-city maternity unit. Women were randomised to usual care, a reflexology or footbath intervention. Primary outcome measures were; the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) for pa in frequency and intensity. Qualitative data on women's experience of the RCT and their experience of LBPP were collected via focus groups after the intervention period. Biochemical physiological and labour data were also collected. In total 64 women completed the study period; retention rates for the reflexology group were 80%, usual care group 83.33% and footbath group 50%. The reflexlogy group demonstrated a Mean Clinically Important Change (MCIC) in VAS pain frequency (1.64cm). Second stage of labour was shorter in the reflexology group (73.56 minutes +/-53.78) compared to the usual care group (117.92minutes +/ -56.15), th is was statistically significant (p=0.045). A lesser increase in cortisol and decrease in beta-endorphin were found in the reflexlogy group. There was a statistically significant reduction in systolic blood pressure (p=0.03) in the reflexology group and a significant increase in diastolic blood pressure (p=O.Ol) in the footbath group. Qualitative data indicate that women perceive health-professional management of pregnancy-LBPP as insufficient. Results indicate it is feasible to conduct an RCT in this area, although a footbath is not suitable sham treatment. Reflexology may be helpful for pregnancy-LBPP; however to confirm this, a fully powered trial is required. Furthermore, management of pregnancy-LBPP needs to be re-evaluated.

Abstract:
Background: Use of complementary methods has increased in Sweden. It calls for increased knowledge about complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) in primary care in the encounter with patients. Previous research has shown that reflexological treatment can completely or partially alleviate including headaches, back- neck pain and stress in some patients. Headaches are a major public health problem in many countries. In addition to causing patient suffering, it is a great cost to society. If more patients were to use the reflexological treatment, their suffering is likely to decrease. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to describe the reflexologers activities and their experience in the treatment of headaches. Method: The method chosen was interviews using a qualitative approach with an interview guide for support. The material was analyzed using qualitative content analysis. The selection was appropriate and included eight informants in Skåne and Småland. The results identified two categories and eight subcategories describing reflexologers activities and their experience of treating clients. It was revealed that reflexologers perform treatments in different ways, they give advice, the clients looking for various reasons and that many continue treatment as a precaution because they feel good by the treatment. Conclusion: Those performing reflexological treatment believe that treatment is a great addition to the traditional health care and that it includes all or part relief of headaches, stress and pain. The traditional health care should consider the benefits of reflexological treatment and offer more research in this area.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Healthcare professionals, specifically nurses, plays a key role in the implementation of interventions that aim to control plantar changes arising from diabetes mellitus. In this context, appears to reflexology therapy, which by means of pressure points in the feet, may act to control or prevention of complications arising from the plantar disease. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of reflexology on the feet of patients with diabetes mellitus type 2. This is a prospective clinical trial, randomized, controlled, masked, with anteroposterior design. The final sample consisted of 45 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus for at least five years, registered in the System of Registration and Monitoring of Hypertensive Diabetics - HIPERDIA. Through stratified randomization, after the initial assessment, the volunteers were divided into two groups: Treated Group (n = 21) who received self-care guidelines with their feet and underwent 12 sessions of reflexology, and Control Group (n = 24) who received only self-care guidelines with their feet. All participants were evaluated by a trained evaluator, in three stages: first (before any intervention), after the sixth and twelfth session of foot reflexology. In the evaluation, the blood glucose at random was checked using a portable glucose meter, the temperature of the tissue with the legs thermography cutaneous plantar pressure engagement with the feet and baropodometry by a rating scale. Statistical analysis was performed by means of tests: Chi-square, Fisher exact test, Mann-Whitney, Wilcoxon, Logistic Regression and Log-Linear. The results show no significant differences between groups with respect to blood glucose, tissue temperature and plantar pressure. However, in some variables related to plantar pressure, more specifically the average pressure, maximum pressure distribution and center of gravity of the foot contact time with the ground, although they were not significant differences between groups at study the volunteers who received twelve sessions of therapy tested showed results closer to normality than those who were part of the control group. The patients in the intervention showed significant differences in some indicators related to the skin and, when compared to the control group. Accordingly, after six sessions of foot reflexology, the treated group showed better scores for hair growth / hair growth , elasticity / tugor , hydration , perspiration, texture and skin integrity / desquamation . Thus, it is believed that this study has contributed not only to the inclusion of reflexology in nursing care for patients with diabetes, but also to the knowledge of the technique and method of application to and use in many different health care services. Furthermore, it is expected that this research, by proposing tools that enable more precise analysis of plantar changes, have contributed to improving the assessment of the feet of people with diabetes. It is recommended, however, studies with a longer duration, in which the application of the intervention is more frequent and occurs in a larger sample, allowing the detection of small differences between the groups, allowing to confirm the effects of therapy and ensure the application of foot reflexology on foot care for patients with diabetes mellitus type 2.

Abstract:
The main objective of the present study is to establish possible approximate and distant points among Lev Vigotski Cultural-Historical Theory and one of its most prominent contemporary intellectual known as Soviet Reflexology. To achieve this aim a bibliographic review was perceived with the purpose of giving more visibility to Vigotski intellectual and political paths and of three Soviet Reflexology leading proponents: Ivan Séchenov, Vladimir Bechterew and Ivan Pavlov. Some philosophic, scientific and ideological conditionings of intellectual production from both thinking schools were analyzed considering grant gathering for the beginning of the investigation subsequent phase. Such phase consisted of quantitative and qualitative content analyses of reference made to Soviet Reflexology authors in texts present at Lev Vigotski Selected Works publishing. It was possible to conclude that Soviet Reflexology shows relevant presence in collected texts on Vigotski Selected Works. It was also noticed that there are relevant qualitative changes in Vigotski regards to reflexologists although the critical content related to reflexological denial attribution of scientific statute to conscience study consisted in constant position in the texts analyzed in this work. Moreover, it was confirmed that Vigotski references to reflexologists show fundamental trait in cultural-historical theoretic conjectures, considering that reflexologists presence is one of the most significant among others present in the selection which was the object of this analyses. It was verified that Vigotski seemed to agree with the reflexological statement that reflex learning consists in cognitive development basis, though it emphasizes that in case of human development, verbal signs usage is predominant in cognitive processes build up if compared to more elementary learning and not mediated by culture, which are typical in reflex responses conditioning described by reflexologists.

In recent years, the booming economy and technology have aroused people’s awareness toward foot reflexology. It is not only recognized by the society but also developed into a systematic skill training program due to the market demand. In order to follow the global trend, the government has issued occupational skill certification standards to excute foot reflexology certification system to qualify this professional skill. However, there is still a lack of objective approaches to evaluate the standard to issue foot reflexology certification. Through literature review and expert questionnaires, our study built four aspects of foot reflexology certification evaluation index. We applied the AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process) to calculate the relative weight between each assessment criterion to further decide the key assessment index. According to the study result, people in the business give high value to whom possessing a foot reflexology certification. They are seen as having not only good professionl ability but also high occupational ethics. To consumers, it is very important for service providers to get this certification. This certification represents high service quality and good curative effect. We expect that in the future, people in the business will reach consensus on how to recognize professional knowledge and skills of foot reflexology. We hope people will see this skill certification as a way to train skillful experts and help promote the employment of citizens. This certification will become an index of the employment market of this industry. It will build up specialists, improve technique levels and service quality, as well as speed up industry upgrading and increase competence.

Abstract:

The aim of this study was to determine the effects of the application of therapeutic reflexology as a complementary medicine, in women with cervical cancer who were receiving radiation therapy with curative intent. Therapeutic reflexology is a therapy that involves stimulating specific reflexes in the hands, feet, body and ears by applying pressure to these reflexes with the thumbs and fingers, using specific techniques. All the body’s organs, glands and other parts of the body are reflected in the feet, body, hands and ears can be stimulated by working over the skin surface with the thumbs and fingers for a specific effect. These specific reflexes have been mapped in miniature on the feet, hands, body and ears (Graham, 1998: 5). Therapeutic reflexology promotes homeostasis within the body, by stimulating reflexes pertaining to organs and glands, and achieving normalisation of organs and glands in the receiver of the treatment. The therapy is non - invasive and non - pharmacological, and has no contra-indications (Graham, 1998: 8). Therapeutic reflexology is often used as a complementary or alternative medicine, yet very little information is available on its effects, which requires further research (Milligan, 2002: 489-96). The number of cancer patients using reflexology as a complementary therapy to allopathic medicine is rapidly rising (Apostolides, 1998: 71-95) It is because of this rise in the number of patients seeking complementary therapy that it is of vital importance that more accurate, results-orientated information is made available to both the patient and the medical practitioner. These findings will allow the patient and medical practitioner to make an informed decision regarding the choices available to complement allopathic medicine, to enhance wellbeing, and achieve better results for the allopathic protocol. A sample group of forty-four women were chosen by simple random selection. Twenty three were treated with therapeutic reflexology, and twenty one were given the placebo treatment for six weeks, while undergoing radiation therapy. The patients chosen for the sample group had stage IIIb as well as stage IIb cervical cancer, and were receiving radiation treatment. The result of the study has been determined by evaluating a questionnaire answered by each patient, after each treatment. The control group who received placebo treatment answered the same questionnaire, formulated in accordance with the Likert Scale, for means of comparison.

Patients undergoing a lumbar disc operation reported a moderate to severe pain in the postoperative period while pain control was used. The purpose of the study is to investigate the efficacy of the foot reflexology in pain perception, anxiety, and quality of recovery in the post-operative patients with lumbar diseases. The study is an experimental pre- and post-test design. Data were collected from three surgical units of a medical center in Taipei, Taiwan. Sixty patients participated in the study. Subjects were randomly assigned to the experimental or the control group equally in number. Thirty patients in the experimental group received 30 minutes of foot reflexology therapy during the post-operative day 1, 2 and 3. Thirty patients in the control group received only usual care. Measures included McGill Pain Questionnaire, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale –Anxiety subscale (HADS-A), and the short form Quality of Recovery (QoR-9). Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics and the Mixed Effects Model. The result revealed that there’s moderate to severe pain with mild anxiety and poor quality of recovery in our study subjects through the post-operative days. Three outcome variables were improving by time from day 1 through day 4. After our intervention with foot reflexology, however there’s no statistically significant improvement in the rest pain, activity pain, anxiety and relaxation by Visual Analog Scale. Nevertheless, patients received reflexology had first bowel movement earlier than the control group patients postoperatively (p=0.007, p=0.037). Results of this study provided vital information for caring patients with lumbar surgery.

This study aims to explore the effects of foot reflexology on functions of daily living in patients of ischemic stroke. We performed a 4-week, randomized, double-blinded study recruiting 50 patients from Neurology ward of a regional teaching hospital in Taipei County. Half of the patients received daily physical therapy (control group, n=25) and the other received a 30-minute session of foot reflexology trice a week in addition to the daily physical therapy. Outcome measures included Barthel Index (BI) and National Institute of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS). The results were analyzed with descriptive statistics, Independent T test, GEE (Generalized Estimating Equation) and Paired T Test. We have found that as compared with the baseline NIHSS score, the treatment group scored significantly higher than the control group, obtaining statistical difference. Using GEE analyzing interaction between groups and NIHSS scores, significant difference was noted with the treatment group. Secondly, in subjects receiving foot reflexology, their BI scores were measured significantly higher than that of the control, showing statistical difference. In addition, their blood pressures and pulses exhibited greater significance than that of the control, with statistical significance. This study established that addition of foot reflexology to the usual physical therapy in patients of ischemic stroke improved their functions of daily living. We therefore recommend that foot reflexology be used to augment physical therapy in order to improve rehabilitation and quality of life.

A Research on the development of Father Josef’s Foot Reflexology in Taiwan (1979~2005) 【Abstract】 The purpose of this research is to study the historical development of Foot Reflexology, which was evolved by Father Josef in Taiwan. In order to understand its developments, information drawn from literal documents were adapted and his historical background was included. The historical development of Fr. Josef’s Foot Reflexology can be divided into three periods. Since 1979-1981, Fr. Josef used the name: “Foot Massage” during the “Initial Period”. The “Formation Period” was during 1982-1993, when the news of Fr. Josef’s method was reported by the broadcasting stations and media. Foot Reflexology had reached nearly every household. In this period the idea: “the more painful the better”, was predominant. The third period from 1994-2005 was called “Fr. Josef’s New Method of Reflexology”. This period brought forth the concept of “Sequential Zone Therapy, Comprehensive Treatment and the Breaking Up of Reaction Material”. The correction of the old ideology (“the more painful the better”) and the use of tools were also encouraged. He also integrated the Chinese Philosophy of Yin and Yang and The Five Elements and the concept of Meridians into his health method. In the initial period the reflexology work was limited to the feet only. The formation period extended the work up to the knees. The main goal of the work in the early stages was to eliminate the waste and poison in the body, therefore the treatment started with the reflex-zone of the kidney. However, later in the formation period it became clear, that the brain is the directing center of the whole body and therefore the treatment should begin with the reflex-zone of the brain. In the initial period the number of reflex-zones grew to 59 and further increased to 83 in the formation period. In the beginning the treatment was mainly manual work using the tips and joints of the fingers and gradually the use of a stick was later introduced. In the early stages the pathological reaction material was seen as uric acid, but later on Fr. Josef realized that this was the crystallization of the uric acid found in the bone joints and was not identical with the detected reaction material in the reflex zones. Therefore through the first and second period of research, the method gradually developed to what we now recognize as “Fr. Josef’s New Method of Reflexology”. Cancer is the leading cause of death in Taiwan. Among all types of cancers, gastrointestinal cancers most frequently occur. The purpose of the study is to investigate the efficacy of the foot reflexology in relieving pain, anxiety, depression, nausea and vomiting in the post-operative patients with gastric cancer and hepatoma. The study design is an experimental pre- and post-test. Data were collected from four surgical units of a medical center in Taipei, Taiwan. Thirty two patients who received surgery for gastric cancer or hepatoma, and subjects were randomly assigned to the experimental or the control group equally in number. Sixteen patients in the experimental group received 20 minutes of foot reflexology therapy in the post-operative day 2,3 and 4. Sixteen patients in the control group received only usual care. Measures included McGill Pain Questionnaire, Visual Analog Scale for pain (VAS), the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), and the Rhodes Index of Nausea and Vomiting. Data were analyzed by Chi-square test, independent t test, and S-plus. The result revealed that there’s moderate to severe pain with anxiety and depression in our study subjects through the post-operative day 2 to day 4. After our intervention with foot massage, there’s statistically significant improvement in the pain perception (t=2.39, p=0.02). However, there’s no significant statistical difference in other outcome variables. By the study result, we suggest that foot reflexology may be included as part of the post-operative nursing care to relieve the pain.

Patients with prolonged mechanical ventilation often experience severe anxiety and dyspnea that interfere the effectiveness of weaning off from mechanical ventilation (PMV). The purpose of this study was to investigate the efficacy of foot reflexology on anxiety, dyspnea and weaning parameters in prolong mechanical ventilation patients. The study is a repeated measure experimental design. Data were collected from respiratory care centers of medical center in northern Taiwan. The sampling criteria include diagnosed respiratory failure patients who have been dependent on ventilator for more than 21days but less than 63 days, and had an unsuccessful weaning process. A total of twenty qualified subjects were enrolled and randomly assigned either to an intervention group (n=8) or a control (n=12) group. Patients in an intervention group received the usual nursing care plus 45 minutes of foot reflexology therapy daily for five consecutive days. Patients in the control group received the usual nursing care only. Outcome measures included visual analogue scales of dyspnea and anxiety, and physiological parameters. Using generalized estimation equations (GEE) and controlling for confounding variables, results indicated that patients in the intervention group significantly decreased anxiety and dyspnea, improved physiological indicators and weaning parameters compared with those of the control group (p < .05). The findings of this study provided an alternative intervention for nurses who are taking care patients with prolonged mechanical ventilation.

This research study shows that young HIV sufferers undergo disturbances involving the mind, body and spirit causing a variety of future adjustment difficulties, problems and coping abilities. This is attributed to fear, loss, grief, guilt, denial, anger, anxiety, depression, stress, physiological changes, pain and hypochondria. This study indicates that they are particularly fearful about being isolated and rejected. They are overwhelmed by thoughts of loss of everything, accompanied by profound feelings of grief. Guilt and self-reproach affect their health further, having an effect on them both physically and mentally. The uncertainty of their future having contracted HIV intensifies anger with themselves as well as others. This also brings about anxiety due to lack of information and appropriate support systems in Soweto...

Abstract:
In the theoretical part, the thesis "Primitive reflexology and its relation to the evolution of locomotion" summarizes the knowledge of movement management and postural control. The main part is focused on individual components which are tested according to developmental kinesiology as spontaneous motor activity, primitive reflexology, postural reactibility. End of the main part addresses the issue of exit examinations. The practical part is focused on finding connections of the components according to the developmental kinesiology test as a screening method. In the second mentioned part of the study were found significantly important connections between the palmar grasp reflex and the Collis horizontal reaction. Other relationships which we verified weren't statistically proven. This concerns the relation of plantar grasp reflex and Collis horizontal reaction, Galant reflex and Landau reaction, suprapubic reflex and traction response and at the end the extension crossed reflex and traction response.

Abstract:
This study examines the unique cultural practices related to disease prevention and health maintenance within a Holmes County, Ohio Amish community. This research focuses on the many options for healthcare within this community and the decisions behind their use. By engaging with these Amish community members to discuss their methods of managing health, the non-Amish medical professionals who treat Amish patients can learn cultural understandings of health within the community. As we learn that there are useful techniques to health beyond the dominant biomedical model, it is valuable to incorporate more traditional methods into our existing healthcare in to boost compliance and comfort for those seeking medical help.

Коленко, Оксана Іванівна, and Oksana Ivanivna Kolenko. "Подолання дизартрії у дітей дошкільного віку засобами фізичної реабілітації." Master's thesis, 2020. http://repository.sspu.edu.ua/handle/123456789/9943.

Abstract:
Modern pedagogues have identified dysarthria as a complex defect characterized by disorders of sound pronunciation and prosodic characteristics of speech. The pathogenesis of dysarthria is based on the lack of innervation of the muscles that provide articulation, voice formation, tempo, rhythm, intonations, associated with organic damage to the central and peripheral nervous system. These pathological changes have a negative impact on the psychophysiological development of children and become the reasons for complicating the child's integration into society and mastering educational programs. The qualifying master's work is devoted to the research of the effectiveness of physical rehabilitation methods to overcome dysarthria in preschool children. The paper substantiates a comprehensive medical and pedagogical model of speech correction of children in this category. The proposed technique is based on the use of general developmental and special corrective physical exercises in combination with the influence of low-intensity laser radiation, acupuncture, individual approach to exercise programs at home and conducting dynamic control of the adequacy of physical activity and the effect of their impact. The effectiveness of the developed approach to the restorative treatment of children with dysarthria has been proven experimentally. An integrated approach has demonstrated higher rehabilitation efficiency. This is evidenced by the improvement of some indicators, namely the condition of the muscular system after treatment. Comparison of the indicators of both groups showed improvement after treatment in a hospital under the supervision of specialists. The obtained results allow to recommend to adhere to this concept of effective recovery for system correction of speech disorders. Objective indicators testify the effectiveness of such approaches to the treatment of dysarthria as a component of combined neurological disorders.

Having adopted historical analysis, archive research as well as interviews with experts and scholars, this thesis endeavors to achieve a thorough understanding and study on reflexology by conducting an overall review on its present management, the training involved, related laws and regulations as well as government policies. We realize from the archives that records witnessing such behavior equivalent to today's reflexology can be traced back to the time of Egyptian Pyramids. As such records were retained among nobles at that time, we can logically infer that such behavior had existed in the society even before the time of these records. Then we notice most scholars in recent several hundred years during the developmental period of neurology have been trying to comprehend reflexology from the angle of reflex, but unable to succeed in providing sensible explanations. In recent times, lots of information have become available to help us understand the operating ways of reflexology. As a result, various theories of different scientific categories, such as neurology, physiology, psychology, biology, and even metaphysics, have submerged, and consequently reflexology has detached from its original frame of reflex and entered a new era focusing on various theories, massage techniques and operating devices. Since then, reflexology has inevitably been criticized seriously by mainstream medicine until the rise of Prof. Eugene Cheng and Ref. Josef Eugster and some background incidents such as the open and reformative measures taken by the Chinese authorities in recent years. All these factors have made the research on the efficiency of reflexology possible. Nevertheless, even today, reflexology is still at the stage of "know what it is without knowing why it is". That is why it cannot be generally recognized following the many difficulties it encounters with respect to developing training courses and influencing government policies. This thesis presents the predicament reflexology has encountered so far, making references to the comments from experts and scholars, and comes up with a brand new strategies in changing it for the better starting from its foundation: legislation. We assert to establish and amend related laws and regulations so that reflexology can be included in mainstream systems of education, examination and recruitment, to design new occupational procedures to effectively promote training, anticipating capable people in this field would actively assist the practitioners to truly comprehend how it works.
