Abstract:
This Thesis collection contains a critical preface and five stories. The preface, “Reflejos y Reflexiones” (translated: Images and Thoughts), addresses the issues of writing the cultural or gendered Other; these issues include methodology, literary colonialism, a dialogue between works, and creating distance through defamiliarizing the self. “Perennials” is the story of Noemi Tellez, an immigrant to the U.S. who must choose between working and taking care of her family. In “Load Bearing” Luis, the eldest child, faces his family and friends on one of his last days before moving away to college. “La Monarca” deals with Lily's, the youngest daughter, struggle to mediate a place between her friends and her family. In “Reflections in the River,” Arabela, the second youngest, faces the ghost of an unwanted pregnancy and La Llorona. “La Cocina de Su Madre” is the story of Magda, the oldest daughter, and her own teenage girl, Natalia, as they attempt to find themselves in a new town after moving a thousand miles from home.

Abstract:
Much of my artistic inspiration comes from my walks in nature. I explore the many different textures of stones, wood chips, tree bark, water ripples, lily pads, birds' feathers, and webbed feet. I find that the reflections on the surface of a pond, and the shadows and highlights on my subjects, are most beautifully captured as they are veiled by the dusk sunset. Sometimes I prefer to capture an image more inclusive of the environment. Other times I am more intrigued by the up close view of a subject, sometimes abstracting it. Through photography I can capture the quiet moments in nature, whether shooting an image of the graceful gaze in a goose's eye, or the ripples created on a pond's surface after a duck glides by. The colors of nature are quite beautiful, but often add an extra element of distraction in photos. Soft black and white nature images are my way of providing a quiet contrast to the everyday hustle and bustle we have all become so accustomed to.

Abstract:
In this dissertation, I explicate how scholars implicate themselves in the subfield of organizational communication studies by engaging in antinomic language-games which make the conduct of research (and textwork in particular) possible. My analysis suggests that the studied scholars enact these games to understand a more or less common object of knowledge, but also to constitute a more or less identifiable position in this given social space. Reflection on the ontological complicity between these position and subfield occurs uncommonly, however. I illustrate, in turn, that this lack of reflexivity hinders discussion about the way academic research practices induce breaks with the social realities which these scholars are trying to understand. In light of this argument, and based predominantly on a translation and extension of Pierre Bourdieu’s ideas, this dissertation thus illustrates how the language-games of scholars in organizational communication studies sustain a limited practice of reflexivity and considers its effects on their production of knowledge.

McClelland, Lynn. "Reflections on voices." Thesis, University of Plymouth, 1997. http://hdl.handle.net/10026.1/2532.

Full text
Abstract:
Voice hearing (auditory hallucinations) is associated with multiple problems : disturbed behaviour, anxiety, depression, social stigma, and suicide ( Siris 1991 , Barnes et al. 1989, Caldwell & Gottesman 1990). Traditionally voices are seen as a symptom of schizophrenia , psychosis, and mental illness, even though recent estimates of prevalence are 2-4% of the population (Siris 1990, Tien et al. 1993). This view has been challenged by research that has shown that there are many different experiences of voices, positive and negative, and that they are not confined to particular diagnoses or clinical populations (Romme & Escher 1989, Bentall 1990). The aetiology of voice hearing is still unknown and to date a comprehensive cognitive model has yet to be elaborated. This study explores the role of metacognition in the maintenance of distress about voices and offers an alternative to the prevailing cognitive account of voices suggested by Chadwick & Birchwood (1994). Morrison, Haddock & Tarrier 's(1995) idea that voices arise because of particular metacognitive beliefs concerning intrusive thoughts is also explored. Using multiple regression analysis this study has shown that metacognitive factors can be used to make a fairly good prediction of levels of distress about voices (Rsq. = 0.64, F=9.64, p<0.001). Important elements of metacognition that were highlighted by the analysis were fears of madness as a result of hearing voices, degree of personal responsibility taken for thoughts in general, degree of responsibility for voices, perceived abnormality of hearing voices for others, desired positivity of thoughts in general, and perceived weak-mindedness. The presence of malevolent content and anxiety were also found to be important in giving a comprehensive account of distress associated with voices. Methodological limitations, theoretical contributions and implications for future research are discussed. The idea of a metacognitive therapy for voices is introduced.

Abstract:
My artwork is inspired by philosophical questions and personal experiences that are prompted from the colors and textures of weathered and worn metal, the changing scenery of the landscape, or from the recollections of childhood memories. The sum of these inspirations are unified by the concepts of growth and change, my own and that of the body of work. The translation of my experiences provides the opportunity to discover new variations in theme, process, and media. For example, monotype printmaking allows me to present the often overlooked beauty of metal eroding, revealing its story layer by layer. Digital photography encourages me to revisit the places of my childhood and consider the effects of the passing years. Painting provides a playground for the exploration of line, shape, texture, and color in a symbolic and nonobjective manner.

Casto, Heidi McKay. "Reflections on motherhood." Thesis, University of Iowa, 2011. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/932.

Full text
Abstract:
I had dreamed of being a mother for some time. These dreams were complete with expectations of how and when I would give birth, and what motherhood would look and feel like. Now that I am a mother, I realize that my projected expectations in light of my true experience provide a conflicting story. While adjusting to reality has not always been easy, the experiences in unknown territory have brought beauty, joy, sadness, pride, and love in ways I never imagined. I believe that the only way to fully grasp the intensity of the experience of motherhood is to actually live through it. In this sense, the significance of documenting the motherhood experience is to capture the emotions and the reality of being a mother. I hope to put images to the continual conversation, conflict, and emotional battle that wages inside of me. I feel driven to document this experience not only to preserve these feelings for my own sake, but also to shed light on what I see as a misperception of motherhood. My experience with motherhood as subject matter for my artwork has led me to feel a sense of judgment; that to talk about motherhood in a fine art context is almost by nature taboo. I find this strange, as certainly we all have, or have had mothers. I hope to question this perceived negativity in the discussion of this relationship. I also desire to give those who share my feelings regarding motherhood a voice; to be confident in their experience, their love for their children, and to celebrate the common, yet extraordinary role of being a mother.

Achkar, Morhaf Al. "Critical Dialogues and Reflections." Thesis, Indiana University, 2018. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10930832.

Full text
Abstract:

Medicine and medical education have become technicized. Aspects of the subjective and normative worlds are shoved to the side or annulled. Doctors and medical students are reduced to “specialists without spirits.” Patients are objectified and dehumanized. “Critical dialogue and reflections” is an attempt to call out the inadequacies of our current framework of thinking about medicine and medical education, written by someone who is a patient, a doctor, an educator, and a researcher. This is a two-paper dissertation. The first paper is a conversation in critical theories. In the first part, I present dialogues and reflections on Foucault’s Power/Knowledge and Habermas’s Theory of Communicative Action. In the second part, I advance the conversation on Habermas’s distinction between communicative and strategic actions, leveraging Hegel’s early writings on morality. This paper develops a methodological framework that gives the theory of communicative rationality a central position. It is a methodological framework in three interrelated senses: methodological foundations for conducting research on the social aspects of medical education and medical practice; methodological framework to guide pedagogy in medical education; and methodological framework for doctor-patient relations. In the second paper, I use the communicative rationality framework to propose a developed method of learning for doctors in training. The theoretical features of this method are articulated through qualitative data analysis of video-taped doctor-patient interactions. It argues for general principles as they are implicitly embedded within the interactions that I analyze through the framework presented in the first paper. In this method, resident physicians review videos of their work through dialogues with their peers. Attending physicians also review the videos and dialogue with one another as they reflect on resident performance. In this work, I restore the normative evaluative and let the subjects speak. It is my belief that medical education and medicine are in desperate need of an alternative theoretical framework. My work here comes to provide just that.

Kelly, Ute. "Studying dialogue - some reflections." Journal of Dialogue Studies, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10454/17551.

Full text
Abstract:
Yes
In this paper, I would like to share some thoughts provoked by the idea of establishing ‘dialogue studies’ as a distinct academic field, as suggested in the inaugural call for contributions to the new journal. These are not meant to be exhaustive of all the relevant questions that could be considered under this heading. I do not, for example, consider the question of disciplinary contributions or boundaries. My emphasis, rather, is on questions to do with ethos and coherence. In particular, I am interested in exploring the possibility, and the challenges, of cultivating a dialogic approach to the study of dialogue itself. My reflections begin with a look at the tendency, within academia, to privilege debate as a form of communication and the question of whether we might conceive a Journal of Dialogue Studies as a forum for a different kind of exchange. I then reflect on some of the difficulties of studying dialogue itself, particularly where this involves outside observers. The final section raises some issues around ‘studying dialogue’ in relation to teaching, learning and assessment. My overall intention here is to share some current, tentative thoughts in the hope that this contributes to a dialogue on the idea, and perhaps the practice, of ‘dialogue studies’.

Miners, William Dingle. "Electromagnetic reflections inside ice sheets." Thesis, Open University, 1999. http://oro.open.ac.uk/57988/.

Full text
Abstract:
When radio echo sounding polar ice sheets weak stratified reflections are visible deep inside the ice sheets. These reflections are often called internal layers. Previously it has been suggested as a result of glacier flow models that these reflections can be treated as surfaces of equal age. In order for a reflection to be related to a single age feature in an ice sheet a one dimensional wave model must be adequate to model the propagation of a wavelet down to the feature and back to the surface. In this thesis four different one dimensional models are constructed each including different physics. It is shown that for the frequencies of interest to radio echo sounding it is sufficient to use the non-dispersive high frequency values of permittivity and conductivity for the ice in the models. The models are used on data from two drill sites. The first site is Berkner Island where I constructed an instrument to measure the electrical conductivity of the 181 metre long ice core. The second site is the Greenland Ice Core Project (GRIP) site at Summit of length 3028 metres. For both sites permittivity and conductivity profiles inside the ice sheet are calculated and put into the models with an estimate of the transmitted wavelet to produce expected radio echo profiles at the sites. For Berkner despite altering many parameters no match between model result and radar data was obtained. For GRIP a satisfactory match was obtained between model result and radar data. It is concluded that the weak, specular (plane like), st Ratified reflections at depth can be treated as isochrones. The strong reflections at shallow depths are a result of a combination of spherical reflection surfaces and interference between many closely spaced layers and cannot necessarily be treated as isochrones.

Pietsch, Christopher Alexander. "Reflections of Color and Light." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/50419.

Full text
Abstract:
An integral part of human vision is the perception of color through the reflection of light. At any moment the human eye is receiving a complex polychromatic reflection of its environment, and the human mind is perceiving many hundreds or thousands of colors. In architecture, light is often a primary consideration in a design, but color is rarely discussed. It makes its presence known, however, as the light entering into a building will carry with it the reflections of the environment. The elements of architecture appear quite different at varying times of the day; at varying times of the year. Even at the same time of day two walls painted the same color will appear as two different colors if placed in different light conditions. This thesis attempts to capture this phenomenon and elaborate on the possibilities of working with light through reflection. It is not meant to give a specific answer, but rather to show the results of a search to find a way of working with light through color.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is an exploration of print within contemporary art that has been motivated by a perceived lack of current theoretical and critical dialogue concerning print practice. Beginning with a discussion of writings of critic Walter Benjamin , specifically the ‘Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction’ I will highlight the nuanced and paradoxical aspects of reproducible print in an age of visual saturation. In the presence of rapidly renewed technologies and digital culture, this complicates how one experiences print in the world and allows older technologies and practice to escape critique. By drawing on French philosopher Gilles Deleuze’s theoretical frameworks of the event and series, I will synthesize these paradoxes and examine printed works beyond their reproducibility and linear timeline. I will argue for print media’s multifaceted material configurations by making connections between modern and contemporary modes of print. Lastly, I will explore these relationships within my own practice, and posit that the understanding of these varied medias will further enrich our understanding of print in contemporary art.

Yördem, Özer. "Cosmopolitan Reflections in the European Parliament." Thesis, Linköping University, Department of Management and Economics, 2007. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:liu:diva-8278.

Abstract:

The problem of world poverty is appalling in human terms. Almost half of all the humankind lives below the poverty line of $2 per day, whereas affluent parts of the world continue to enjoy enormous technological and economical progress. In the light of such discrepancy, the debate in political philosophy regarding “global justice” has renewed significance. The current debate between those who agree global justice is important, is those who think that positive duties towards poor is enough, and those who think that morality requires a re-designation of the ground rules operating at the global level.

The Cosmopolitan view grounds its theoretical framework in this second view. This study aims to analyse if, and how, the normative debate in the European Parliament reflects the assumptions, arguments and considerations of the Cosmopolitan approach. This study identifies central concepts of the Cosmopolitan approach, and then analyses how these concepts are discussed in the European Parliamentary debates. In addition, I identify who discusses what in the parliamentary debates. The analysis reveals how Cosmopolitan ideas are reflected in the discourse within the debates, and the second dimension identifies which party groups discuss and hold which key concepts of Cosmopolitanism.

Logan, Maley. "On Shock Reflections in Fast Flames." Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/32227.

Full text
Abstract:
The present work investigates the structure of supersonic turbulent deflagration typically observed as precursors to the onset of detonation. These high-speed flames are obtained after detonation interaction with cylindrical obstacles. Two mixtures having the same propensity for local hot spot generation were used, namely stoichiometric hydrogen-oxygen and methane-oxygen. It was shown that the methane mixture sustained turbulent fast flames, while the hydrogen mixture did not. Three visualization techniques, Schlieren, shadowgraph, and direct chemi-luminescence were implemented to record the evolution of the structure following the detonation interaction with the obstacle. Detailed high-speed visualizations of the nearly two-dimensional flow fields permitted the identification of the key mechanism involved. It was found that the shock reflections in methane permitted strong forward jets behind periodically formed Mach shocks on the front of the deflagration. These hot spots in the re-circulation zones of the jets provided local enhancement of the reactivity through mixing, supporting the formation of new generations of new hot spots. The hot spot formation was identified as the prominent difference between the different mixtures. These reactive pockets further sustained the shock reflection processes. As the methane-oxygen fast flame propagates along the channel, the wave front was observed to organize into fewer modes and eventually led to a reflection capable of the transition to detonation. In the hydrogen mixtures, at similar thermo-chemical parameters, self-sustained fast flames were not observed. Following detonation interaction in the hydrogen mixture, reactive reflections were observed. As the wave propagated downstream after a limited number of reactive reflections, the wave developed a planar wave front and decayed as the reaction zone trailed with an ever-increasing distance. It is postulated that the absence of the forward jets did not allow such fast flames to establish. This jetting slip line instability in methane shock reflections was recently found to be correlated with the low value of the isentropic exponent and its control of Mach shock jetting described by Mach & Radulescu. The lack of the forward jetting of the slip line in the hydrogen mixture with the higher value of the isentropic exponent is in agreement with the Mach & Radulescu.

Draper, Janet. "Reflections on teachers' work and careers." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/29090.

Full text
Abstract:
This commentary reflects upon a set of papers relating to teachers’ work which are significant for a number of reasons. Firstly they begin to fill a gap in the understanding of the experience of Scottish teachers, and how they see their work and careers in teaching. Secondly the research has impacted, with other forces, upon policy at national level, by raising awareness of teachers’ experiences of employment and support within a context where the focus of rhetoric is long-term professional development. Arrangements for the support of new teachers have now changed. The analysis presented here sets the papers’ findings in a wider context of the changing nature of work and of career, and of the shape these take in teaching, and questions assumptions made about the current and future nature and length of teachers’ careers. Teachers’ work is work, public sector work and professional work and each additional characteristic shapes its nature. Contextually, globalisation and new managerial agendas have brought changes in work and career and the findings of the papers are analysed within this framework. The Scottish context, with its educational history, ways of working and recent changes in teachers’ work, provides its own unique setting for understanding teachers’ work and the impact of modernisation. It is concluded that while some common effects of modernisation are clearly identifiable for Scottish teachers’ work, satisfaction with autonomy unusually remains high. The new arrangements for teachers following from the implementation of the McCrone agreement are considered as a force for sustaining that satisfaction.

Abstract:
Environmentalists see the protest against the Jabiluka uranium mine in Australia's Northern Territory as an example of positive green-black relations. The formation of an alliance between Aboriginal owners and greens to protest against the mine resulted in a lengthy campaign that included maintaining a camp near the leasesite and organising a long series of mass protest actions in a remote location over an extended period from March to October 1998. However, some tensions between greens and the traditional Aboriginal owners became evident as the campaign went on. This thesis traces the origins of these tensions to past conflicts between environmentalists and Aboriginal people and shows that they are largely related to their conflicting perceptions of the environment. Those perceptions arise from different knowledge systems and are encapsulated in the terms 'wilderness' and 'country', used to describe the physical world by environmentalists and Aboriginal owners respectively. I discuss the attitudes towards the environment that accompany those perceptions and consider the way they were manifest in some of the tensions that arose at Jabiluka. The close relationship between influential strands of environmentalism and Western science is a related source of conflict. My analysis of that relationship shows that environmentalism, via 'green science' is more closely aligned with the developmentalist worldview than the Aboriginal worldview. The thesis is an analytical reflection upon the Jabiluka Protesters' Camp based on the personal experience I gained from my fieldwork there and informed by the literature of feminism, ecofeminism, social constructionism and anthropology. I discuss the manifestations of ecofeminism I observed at Jabiluka. I argue that the Jabiluka Protesters' Camp functioned successfully because it utilised ecofeminist principles and practices, that as a consequence the relationship between greens and blacks has been strengthened and therefore that ecofeminism can continue to have a positive effect on those relations in the future.

Abstract:
When the Sun Hits is a feature length film concerned with the delicate relationship between the individual and the whole. A young man named John has fallen into a state of social paralysis since his father's death. He no longer knows how to relate to others and the world around him. Rather than looking to friends and family for support he closes himself off. After the mysterious disappearance of his mother, John blames himself for her leaving. He tries his best to reconnect with his old life, but finds himself making the same mistakes over and over. When his friend Tracy reaches out to him, he bitterly rejects her and once again finds himself alone. It is then that John puts his old life behind him and sets off to make amends with his mother. John has no idea where his mother might be or if she will accept him. Nonetheless, he reaches into the abyss to see if someone is there, waiting for him. The structure of the film is nonlinear as it deviates from traditional narrative form. The intent of this thesis is to serve as a post-film reflection that discusses the relation between my views on cinema and the film I made. The paper will shift between the general themes of the narrative and the film theory working behind it all. It will explore the idea of cinema as an extension of the mind and how this is present in the film. By using specific examples from the film this theory of cinema can be fleshed out and an insight into my process may be gleaned.

The purpose of this thesis is to reflect on questions relating to the autobiographical genre within the contemporary perspective of biographical studies, a perspective that has been legitimizing these discourses situated at the margins of literary canon. The object of analysis is a testament/letter and a few photographs. The 317-page document was written by Camilo Cândido de Araújo, my maternal grandfather, between September 14, 1969 and January 26, 1970, and it was addressed to his eldest son. The epistle - a memoir in content - is a legacy from a father to his son; it is a form of autobiography that, besides having been written in the final years of the authors life, played a fundamental role in his own life history. Based on this recently found material, reflections are made on matters pertinent to literature as epistolary and autobiographic writings, the necessity of writing, and memory. The relationship between the biographer and his subject is the starting point for highlighting the maternal lineage. The family photographs serve as a counterpoint to the text, as a supplement to the material in question.

This thesis presents WiTrack, a system that tracks the 3D motion of a user from the radio signals reflected off her body. It works even if the person is occluded from the WiTrack device or in a different room. WiTrack does not require the user to carry any wireless device, yet its accuracy exceeds current RF localization systems, which require the user to hold a transceiver. Empirical measurements with a WiTrack prototype show that, on average, it localizes the center of a human body to within a median of 10 to 13 cm in the x and y dimensions, and 21 cm in the z dimension. It also provides coarse tracking of body parts, identifying the direction of a pointing hand with a median of 11.2°. WiTrack bridges a gap between RF-based localization systems which locate a user through walls and occlusions, and human-computer interaction systems like Kinect, which can track a user without instrumenting her body, but require the user to stay within the direct line of sight of the device.

The goal of this thesis is to produce an image processing tool that could, with limited user interaction, significantly reduce spectral reflections. The resulting process can then be used by biological researchers in the process of cataloging and recognizing individual organisms via collected images. The process involves the generation of a mask, refinements to that mask such as background segmentation and morphological dilation, and finally the inpainting of the specular regions. This method improves on existing single pixel methods by incorporating both color and texture infilling of the specular reflections. It also works on images with no special setup or preparation.

Abstract:
Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University 2005
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The aim of the current study was to undertake a phenomenological investigation on teenage motherhood and to learn how this experience forms part of the teenage mother's life. Using the snowball sampling method, five women aged between 26 and 35 years were selected to participate in the study. All the five women became mothers during their teenage years. Indepth interviews were conducted in Northern Sotho and Tshivenda depending on the language preference and fluency of the participant. The interviews were audio-taped, and later transcribed and translated. A phenomenological method of analysis was used to transform the original data into natural meaning units (NMUs) which were further interrogated so as to distil central sociological themes that were associated with the experience of teenage motherhood. Apart from the finding that the participants got pregnant when they were aged between 16 and 18, five sociological themes associated with teenage motherhood were identified. These are: • Lack of knowledge about sexual relationships contributes to teenage pregnancy and motherhood. • Early childbearing has a negative impact on the teenage mother's social relationships. • Teenage mothers tend to experience emotional problems after delivery of their babies. • Teenage motherhood has a long term disruptive effect on the teenage mother's educational and occupational opportunities. • Teenage motherhood leads to significant lifestyle changes for those who have been through the experience. In view of the above themes, sexual education both at school and at home, is suggested here as a more viable option to help minimise the risk of teenage motherhood in society. Whilst other options like abortion and the newly introduced child support grant are also available to the teenage mother, these are not considered favourable.

Abstract:
Deep seismic reflection profiling has revealed reflective upper crustal structures, often interpreted as faults or shear zones, and sometimes a strongly reflective lower crust. This thesis investigates what crustal reflections represent, and to what extent seismic sections can be used to investigate a three-dimensional Earth. The lower crust often consists of reflective bands and transparent zones. An analogy is drawn between the geometry of reflective bands seen in the lower crust and the orientation of shear zones likely to develop in a plastic lower crust during both bulk pure and simple shear. These results suggest that lower crust reflections come from shear zones. Crustal reflections are often cross-cutting and shorter than the Fresnel Zone diameter. Simple 2-D seismic modelling demonstrates that these reflection segments often do not directly represent real structure, but are rather the product of complex spatial interference, which is itself controlled by the geometrical packing of the reflecting surfaces. Intersections of orthogonal profiles and limited three-dimensional modelling are combined with these results to provide constraints on the three-dimensional shape of lower crustal reflectors. The results are consistent with shear pods and boudins within shear zones, supporting the hypothesis that lower crust reflections are from shear zones. These results are then integrated with other data to provide a model for lower crustal reflectivity and structure. The modelling results show that 3-D control is vital in interpreting crustal reflections, which must be viewed as an interference pattern, and so can only crudely define structure. These conclusions are emphasised in structural interpretations of crustal reflections observed on grids of seismic data, from the southern North Sea and the Oberpfalz region of West Germany.

Rodrigues, Cláudia Susana Tavares. "Feminine/ Feminist Reflections on Fairy Tales." Master's thesis, Universidade de Aveiro, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10773/15244.

Abstract:
Mestrado em Estudos Ingleses
To analyse some fairy tales such as Beauty and the Beast and Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs from the perspective of modern feminism is like revising the paradigms which form our romantic expectations and illustrate psychological ambiguities that frequently confuse contemporary women. Portraits of adolescents waiting and dreaming, patterns of enchantment, and the romanticism of marriage contribute to the power of fairy tales. However, such fantasies praise the heroines’ incapacity to act independently, the reliance on exterior rescue and the binding to the father or to a prince. Although many readers recognise obvious elements of fantasy, they sometimes still identify themselves with the heroes and especially with the heroines. Unconsciously, women can transfer from the fairy tales to the real world cultural norms, which exalt passivity, dependency and self-sacrifice as feminine virtues. Intrinsically, fairy tales perpetuate the male status quo, making female subordination seem a desirable fate from which it is impossible to escape. It is this feminine perspective and feminist criticism that I intend to expose in my thesis, touching on the importance that fairy tales still have today, in the 21st century, not only on child rearing but also on the adults’ behaviour. In this thesis, I briefly explain how fairy tales emerged several centuries ago and how they evolved until our time in several versions, with several perspectives. My purpose is to analyse how fairy tales, on the one hand can influence us positively, showing us what is good and what is evil, and on the other hand, can influence us negatively because they present us with the “socially” accepted behaviours expected from women. In fairy tales, women are almost always represented as stepmothers and bad witches or as sweet, passive princesses dependent on the male image (father or prince) in order to be happy. It is this representation of female image that I intend to explore and analyse, showing my point of view of how fairy tales continue to represent behavioural models considered adequate to the female sex and to mirror a female image which is still accepted and seen as the most adequate – the image of a submissive, passive woman waiting for her prince charming to save her and bring her the desired happiness.

Abstract:
The written component of my thesis will take the form of an extended artist statement in which I discuss all six paintings included in my thesis exhibition. A major theme of my work is sexuality, specifically female sexuality. This thesis will begin by looking at the three miniature paintings that spearheaded the investigation of this theme. I will examine the generalized and personal feminist symbolism that these paintings contain. The two works that followed the miniatures are depictions of sexual interactions between my husband and myself. I will explain the significance of my depictions and relate them to the work of contemporary painters who deal with the same subject matter. The last painting in this series is a seven by eight foot landscape. I will explain how it relates to my figurative work and why nature has a constant presence in all of my paintings. Lastly, I will clarify why the lighting and composition of my paintings takes the form of traditional stage sets.

Blume, Maile. "Reflections on Here: A Choreographic Thesis." Scholarship @ Claremont, 2017. http://scholarship.claremont.edu/scripps_theses/995.

Abstract:
This choreographic thesis describes the conceptual foundations underlying the development of the dance, Here. Here uses text and movement to explore the challenge of locating of locating oneself in this particular institution. It asks the questions: what happens when our personal needs conflict with the structure of this institution? How do we use our limited capacities to exist / resist / care for each other in this place? Reflections on Here describes the choreographic inquiries and discoveries that contributed to the development of Here. It includes research on desire and mourning, as well as reflections on the power of autobiographical dance. Reflections on Here analyzes the work of Bill T. Jones and Cynthia Oliver as a way of understanding how autobiographical dance and text may be used to support one another in performance. It examines how work in the studio as well as in performance can build a feeling of “compassionate power” onstage. This idea of “compassionate power” is used in this project to describe the somatic principles that may embody the loving action that takes place during collective organizing. These somatic principles include sensing and working with the weight of the body on the floor and working with momentum rather than forcing movements to take place. Reflections on Here analyzes how the idea of compassionate power infused the development of Here, and connects the work of choreographers who are concerned with showing personhood and their sociopolitical landscape onstage. Finally, Reflections on Here acknowledges the necessity for this choreographic project to be contextualized within – and connected to – the ongoing brave and compassionate organizing happening at Scripps College.
