Abstract:
Much of my artistic inspiration comes from my walks in nature. I explore the many different textures of stones, wood chips, tree bark, water ripples, lily pads, birds' feathers, and webbed feet. I find that the reflections on the surface of a pond, and the shadows and highlights on my subjects, are most beautifully captured as they are veiled by the dusk sunset. Sometimes I prefer to capture an image more inclusive of the environment. Other times I am more intrigued by the up close view of a subject, sometimes abstracting it. Through photography I can capture the quiet moments in nature, whether shooting an image of the graceful gaze in a goose's eye, or the ripples created on a pond's surface after a duck glides by. The colors of nature are quite beautiful, but often add an extra element of distraction in photos. Soft black and white nature images are my way of providing a quiet contrast to the everyday hustle and bustle we have all become so accustomed to.

Brummans, Boris H. J. M. "Dispositional reflections." Diss., Texas A&M University, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/1969.1/1396.

Full text
Abstract:
In this dissertation, I explicate how scholars implicate themselves in the subfield of organizational communication studies by engaging in antinomic language-games which make the conduct of research (and textwork in particular) possible. My analysis suggests that the studied scholars enact these games to understand a more or less common object of knowledge, but also to constitute a more or less identifiable position in this given social space. Reflection on the ontological complicity between these position and subfield occurs uncommonly, however. I illustrate, in turn, that this lack of reflexivity hinders discussion about the way academic research practices induce breaks with the social realities which these scholars are trying to understand. In light of this argument, and based predominantly on a translation and extension of Pierre Bourdieu’s ideas, this dissertation thus illustrates how the language-games of scholars in organizational communication studies sustain a limited practice of reflexivity and considers its effects on their production of knowledge.

McClelland, Lynn. "Reflections on voices." Thesis, University of Plymouth, 1997. http://hdl.handle.net/10026.1/2532.

Full text
Abstract:
Voice hearing (auditory hallucinations) is associated with multiple problems : disturbed behaviour, anxiety, depression, social stigma, and suicide ( Siris 1991 , Barnes et al. 1989, Caldwell & Gottesman 1990). Traditionally voices are seen as a symptom of schizophrenia , psychosis, and mental illness, even though recent estimates of prevalence are 2-4% of the population (Siris 1990, Tien et al. 1993). This view has been challenged by research that has shown that there are many different experiences of voices, positive and negative, and that they are not confined to particular diagnoses or clinical populations (Romme & Escher 1989, Bentall 1990). The aetiology of voice hearing is still unknown and to date a comprehensive cognitive model has yet to be elaborated. This study explores the role of metacognition in the maintenance of distress about voices and offers an alternative to the prevailing cognitive account of voices suggested by Chadwick & Birchwood (1994). Morrison, Haddock & Tarrier 's(1995) idea that voices arise because of particular metacognitive beliefs concerning intrusive thoughts is also explored. Using multiple regression analysis this study has shown that metacognitive factors can be used to make a fairly good prediction of levels of distress about voices (Rsq. = 0.64, F=9.64, p<0.001). Important elements of metacognition that were highlighted by the analysis were fears of madness as a result of hearing voices, degree of personal responsibility taken for thoughts in general, degree of responsibility for voices, perceived abnormality of hearing voices for others, desired positivity of thoughts in general, and perceived weak-mindedness. The presence of malevolent content and anxiety were also found to be important in giving a comprehensive account of distress associated with voices. Methodological limitations, theoretical contributions and implications for future research are discussed. The idea of a metacognitive therapy for voices is introduced.

Swantner, William. "Ghost focus modeling in laser systems." In OSA Annual Meeting. Washington, D.C.: Optica Publishing Group, 1992. http://dx.doi.org/10.1364/oam.1992.mq4.

Abstract:
Identification of single reflection and multiple reflection ghosts in high power laser systems is essential for the safeguard of components, equipment, and personnel. Most ray trace programs require the user to model each path of reflections as an independent optical system. The OPTIC AD program permits us to trace rays in a non-sequential fashion, to calculate the remaining energy in a ray, to split a ray at a partially reflecting surface, and to display all the ray paths simultaneously. We have used the program to look for ghost foci in high power laser systems and in interferometers. We will show the results of several of these analyses. The results will indicate how we can remove from consideration ghost rays that exceed a user specified number of reflections or whose energy is below a user specified lower limit.
