Nygren, Modjeska Natalia. "Resolving other-anaphora." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/566.

Full text
Abstract:
Reference resolution is a major component of any natural language system. In the past 30 years significant progress has been made in coreference resolution. However, there is more anaphora in texts than coreference. I present a computational treatment of other-anaphora, i.e., referential noun phrases (NPs) with non-pronominal heads modi- fied by “other” or “another”: [. . . ] the move is designed to more accurately reflect the value of products and to put steel on more equal footing with other commodities. Such NPs are anaphoric (i.e., they cannot be interpreted in isolation), with an antecedent that may occur in the previous discourse or the speaker’s and hearer’s mutual knowledge. For instance, in the example above, the NP “other commodities” refers to a set of commodities excluding steel, and it can be paraphrased as “commodities other than steel”. Resolving such cases requires first identifying the correct antecedent(s) of the other-anaphors. This task is the major focus of this dissertation. Specifically, the dissertation achieves two goals. First, it describes a procedure by which antecedents of other-anaphors can be found, including constraints and preferences which narrow down the search. Second, it presents several symbolic, machine learning and hybrid resolution algorithms designed specifically for other-anaphora. All the algorithms have been implemented and tested on a corpus of examples from the Wall Street Journal. The major results of this research are the following: 1. Grammatical salience plays a lesser role in resolving other-anaphors than in resolving pronominal anaphora. Algorithms that solely rely on grammatical features achieved worse results than algorithms that used semantic features as well. 2. Semantic knowledge (such as “steel is a commodity”) is crucial in resolving other-anaphors. Algorithms that operate solely on semantic features outperformed those that operate on grammatical knowledge. 3. The quality and relevance of the semantic knowledge base is important to success. WordNet proved insufficient as a source of semantic information for resolving other-anaphora. Algorithms that use the Web as a knowledge base achieved better performance than those using WordNet, because the Web contains domain specific and general world knowledge which is not available from WordNet. 4. But semantic information by itself is not sufficient to resolve other-anaphors, as it seems to overgenerate, leading to many false positives. 5. Although semantic information is more useful than grammatical information, only integration of semantic and grammatical knowledge sources can handle the full range of phenomena. The best results were obtained from a combination of semantic and grammatical resources. 6. A probabilistic framework is best at handling the full spectrum of features, both because it does not require commitment as to the order in which the features should be applied, and because it allows features to be treated as preferences, rather than as absolute constraints. 7. A full resolution procedure for other-anaphora requires both a probabilistic model and a set of informed heuristics and back-off procedures. Such a hybrid system achieved the best results so far on other-anaphora.

Abstract:
This study aims to examine the cross-relations of Nabataean with other Aramaic dialects and Arabic. It also provides a syntactical study for the researchers in the field. This study focuses on the structure of the Nabataean sentence in published texts (credited in the list of references) where structures in the Nabataean examples are analysed linguistically according to the methods of the ancient grammarians and modern linguists. This study divides the sentence into the various elements of predication giving a basis for dividing the chapters of the thesis. The findings of the analysis of the sentences are compared with other Aramaic dialects and Arabic.

Abstract:
The paper aims to examine the nature of the relationship between beauty and the city. I examined this relationship by first providing a summary of relevant philosophers and their thoughts concerning aesthetics. Second, I compared their thoughts to my own creating my own abstract framework. Third, I implemented my abstract framework through the lens of architecture. This art form is the most organic to study the relationship of beauty within the city because it merges elements characteristic of one’s being like political discourse with the longing for some type of excitement or stimulation which might transfigure one’s self to a higher understanding, something that can only be achieved by experiencing beauty. In other words, buildings and the spaces around them drive the way in which humans interact with each other and their surroundings. I found that the beautiful is desirable and at a point becomes essential to a person’s happiness. To achieve a sense of beauty within the city, the ruling class must possess practical wisdom. A type of knowledge that allows them to pursue the appropriate and promote a kind of creativity that not only respects tradition but also aims to unveil some new form of experience.

Barr, George K. "Scale in literature : with reference to the New Testament and other texts in English and Greek." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 1994. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/26245.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation explores "scale" in literature in general, and in the New Testament epistles in particular. All creative activity has its locus at an appropriate point within a wide scale spectrum: literature is no exception. This became apparent in 1965 when scale relationships were observed by the author in cumulative sum graphs of the Pauline epistles. Such scale differences are familiar to architects who use scale as a creative tool, but a wide search through standard reference books, surveys of work on statistical stylometry, linguistics and Biblical studies failed to provide any evidence that scholars were aware of scale in literature. Further investigation revealed that scale differences were to be found in many fields of creativity, in architecture, art, photography, music and engineering. Also explored was an interesting parallel found in the multi-layered scaling associated with the mathematics of chaos. To provide a broader perspective through which to view the Pauline epistles, 80 works by six modern authors and the writings of three ancient Greek authors were selected as test material. Graphs were prepared showing the sentence sequences and distributions of these works comprising over 400,000 words, and scale differences were found, not only between works, but also between sections of individual works. These were related to differences in genre, and this raised serious questions concerning the statistical homogeneity of samples containing scale differences. Care was taken to relate patterns directly to the content of the text and to the findings of Biblical scholarship. Links with theology revealed that the sense of the numinous presence, and the sense of the sublime in art, were on occasion directly reflected in sentence length. Human moods and feelings were found to have unpredictable but measurable manifestations in terms of scale in literature.

Full text
Abstract:
There are Jewish literary traditions of Isaac's prayer which are different from the Biblical narrative in Gen 22. In the story of Aqedah, it looks as if Isaac's obedience and willingness together with Abraham's have been accepted in God's sight as sacrifice and something which forgives people's sins and which redeems people from all distress. This was done even without Isaac literally being sacrificed according to the tradition. If Jesus was familiar with these traditions, it could be that Jesus thought that his death and sacrifice might be accepted even without the actual performance of it. The last words of Socrates and his acceptance of his death without any compliant had been influential in the Hellenistic culture. As the Greek literature had a great influence on whatever happened in the literary world of the first century, it is just possible that Jesus was familiar with the story of the heroic death of Socrates and his words. In addition, our observation has brought us to the conclusion that the gospel writers have been influenced to some extent by the Greek writings. In any case it is likely that Jesus knew that to be troubled in the face of death was not considered honourable in the sight of wish people. Our reference to Eleazar sheds some light on the life of Jewish martyrs. We have noticed that the certainty and the willingness of Eleazar were exemplary for the other martyrs. There is no question of escape from his torture in Eleazar's mind. It is also to be noted that the tradition of martyrs is not new to Jesus. Eleazar prayed that his death may be accepted in expiatory sacrifice. There is a possibility of influence between the prayer of Eleazar and either Jesus or the Gospel writers.

Clark, Sarah. "On the other side of the reference desk| Exploring undergraduates' information search mediation experiences through the acrl framework." Thesis, Oklahoma State University, 2016. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10189014.

Full text
Abstract:

Information seeking, a key aspect of information literacy, is relevant to student academic success as well as to leadership, organizational and public policy issues within higher education. Although librarians contend that students should consult formal mediators for help during an information search, students are much more likely to prefer consulting what are defined in the literature as informal mediators. This contradiction suggests the current literature of information seeking may not fully depict the aspects of search mediation that are actually the most important to student information seekers.

Purpose and Questions: The purpose of my study was to explore lower-division undergraduates’ thoughts, feelings, and actions as they engage in and reflect on their information search mediation encounters over the course of an information search process. My study was guided by two central questions: 1. What are the characteristics of information search mediation encounters as experienced by lower-division undergraduate students? 2. How do students use search mediation encounters to navigate the information search process?

Methods and Theory: To explore these questions, I employed Stake's (2006) multiple case study methodology. Each student's assignment-related experiences of information search mediation and information seeking were considered a case for the purposes of this study. After analyzing individual cases in isolation for key findings, I considered them as a set to identify cross-case assertions that describe the essence of the topic under investigation. I then examined and discussed the cross-case through the lens of the Association of College and Research Libraries' (ACRL) Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education, the primary theoretical framework for the study.

Findings: Six cross-case findings emerged from the data. These findings describe aspects of mediator selection, the mediation encounter, the role of information search mediation in the information search process, the influence of lessons learned via mediation on the final research assignment, and the ways that mediation encounters influenced later information searches, as well as search mediation as a whole. These provocative findings both support and problematize the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy, and have important implications for information literacy theory, research, and practice.

Janari, Barbara. "From race to grace : the other J M Coetzee." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/8020.

Full text
Abstract:
One of the notable features of JM Coetzee's work is the portrayal in his novels, particularly in his 1999 Booker Prize-winning novel, Disgrace, of worlds that often seem bleak and bereft of redemption. In this dissertation I will argue that there is a resonance in Coetzee's writing that goes beyond the political and historical and that adds another dimension to his work. The focus of my dissertation will be an attempt to account for this other 'dimension' within the broader socio-political-historical nexus that informs much of his work. I will argue that this other dimension represents an ongoing conccrn with the questions of redemption and salvation, particularly as they are manifested in his latcr works, Disgrace and Elizabeth Costello. These concerns, however, are not just a consequence of Coetzee's evolving thought. As I will show, they are present in his earlier texts as well. To this end, I will consider the ways in which the themes of redemption and salvation, in the specifically religious and Christian sense of these words, also resonate in In the Heart of the Country (1977) and Life and Times of Michael K (1983).

Doyle, B. J. "Disability, discrimination and equal opportunities : a comparative study of legal models addressing the employment rights of disabled persons, with particular reference to Britain and the United States." Thesis, University of Salford, 1993. http://usir.salford.ac.uk/14834/.

Full text
Abstract:
Against the background of growing demands in Britain for anti-discrimination legislation covering disabled persons, the study examines the case for reform, and the shape which such legislation might take, in the employment field. Using the socio-legal tradition, the meaning of disability is explored and the demography, nature and experience of disability is described. The evidence of employment discrimination against disabled persons is evaluated and their position in the labour market is plotted. Existing law on disabled employment rights in Britain is set out and its strengths and weaknesses weighed. The employment rights of disabled workers in the European Community, the United States, Canada and Australia are narrated. Then, using comparative legal methodology, a number of problems and issues in the regulation of disability-related employment discrimination (and the promotion of equal opportunities) are recounted and critically analysed. These problems and issues include the definition of disability discrimination, identification of the protected class, fitness for work and employment qualification, use of reasonable accommodation and positive action, preferential treatment and the role of quotas, and enforcement strategies and remedial action. The experience of the United States is recruited as the primary basis of comparison and lessons for suggested legal reforms in Britain are pointed out. Some general conclusions on the efficacy of disability discrimination laws are drawn. The study surveys a wide variety of primary and secondary legal materials, including legislation and case law, and reviews the pertinent literature drawn from legal scholarship and other relevant disciplines. It does so in the context of a theoretical perspective that borrows from the body of legal theory and concepts developed in race and gender discrimination law.

Yakin, Orhun. "Translation of humour with special reference to the cartoons in 'Leman' and other popular weekly humour magazines of Turkey." Thesis, University of Warwick, 1999. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/4367/.

Full text
Abstract:
In this dissertation, the various strategies of humour translation have been analysed by taking various cartoons with speech bubbles from the popular Turkish humour weekly magazine Leman and other similar publications. Generally considered as an extremely problematic, sometimes next to impossible, task within the translation studies, humour translation requires and deserves special attention since, as it was explained in the related sections, it may unite or separate people within the context of one single joke. As we also have stated elsewhere in the text, the description of both humour and translation, as two separate concepts, are not available in certain and decisive terms. This is especially true for the concept of humour which also covers the areas of laughter, jokes, wit, satire, irony and many others which are all interchangeable with each other. This fact makes an all-round definition very difficult. We also tried to show that, the visual humour or the visual aspect of humour could be a valuable asset for a foreign recipient who genuinely wishing to understand humour products from a different and remote culture. We wanted to show, and to some extent share, that the cartoons, provided they are not strictly political or crammed with regional issues and accents, could be fathomed by an outsider with the help of a decent translation and an adequate amount of contextual and cultural background information. We have assumed, from the very beginning of this project, that the contemporary Turkish humour, particularly cartoons that are represented in Leman and other similar publications, was interesting enough to become a dissertation subject, particularly those with stock types or characters since they have the potential of becoming snapshots of a country which is still considered as alien (or other) by the West. As far as this writer concerned, the main points of interest concerning Turkey by the British public could roughly be summarised in two points: a bargain trip to the seaside during the summer season and some occasional football matches Manchester United plays against Turkish teams in Istanbul. Especially the latter always attracts heavy press coverage during and after a match. We wanted to show that there are other cultural aspects exist in Turkey as well and such aspects could be transferred to other cultures by ways of translation. The material we have chosen is both visual and prose at the same time and although they function as a unity, they also complement each other. It is proposed that, although a perfect translation is always a desirable concept in almost every field, the translation of humour is possible within certain frameworks. The visual side of cartoons, as in situation comedies, contributes immensely to the comprehension of the message, which should be considered as the most important feature of the joke. To this end, a variety of cartoons are selected from both Lenicyn and other similar humour weeklies and translated with an adequate amount of background and contextual information that provided beforehand. This background information also includes, as far as the material in question permits, a close analysis of the language and the subject matter. To provide a better insight for the reader, a summary of Turkish humour and humour magazines are added alongside a section on the issue of humour itself.

Abstract:
This study sets out to analyse the teaching skills of an effective Australian teacher of French in a primary school in Canberra. Chapter One provides an overview of the primary education in Singapore with particular emphasis on the language policies. The purpose and scope of the study and the approach used in carrying out the study are also described in this chapter. Chapters Two to Six present descriptive features of the teacher's teaching approach. Clarity in her goals and instructions to her Year 3 and Year 5 classes were analysed through extracts of the classroom discourse. The way the teacher provided encouragement and feedback on errors to her Year 3 class were also described. The variation in the pace of her speech in relation to the activities and the adjustments made when she posed questions according to the language proficiency of the pupils, also form part of the data analysed. In Chapter Eight, conclusions were made of the possibility of transferring the teaching approaches to the teaching of English as a second language in primary schools in Singapore by comparing the French program described in Chapter Seven with the primary education system in Singapore. The study concludes with an overview of the areas that need further research and study.

Abstract:
Quarterly samples were used to estimate assemblage-level (all species combined) fish production within three minimally-impacted, southern West Virginia streams. The total annual fish production estimate was highest in Slaunch Fork (37.52 kg∙ha-1∙y-1), a tributary of the Tug Fork River, and lowest in Cabin Creek (10.59 kg∙ha-1∙y-1), a Guyandotte River tributary. Creek Chub Semotilus atromaculatus, Mottled Sculpin Cottus bairdii and Blacknose Dace Rhinicthys atratulus were the most abundant species among sites, accounting for >90% of all sampled individuals. Reference condition criteria were also selected and metrics calculated for each of the three stream sites using a variety of established metrics. According to established criteria, all three of our sites scored high enough to be listed as “reference” sites. Third, a comprehensive GIS analysis was conducted in order to determine land use patterns and predict where similar assemblages would be present using various climatological and physical characteristics of our stream sites. These analyses revealed rapid expansion of surface mining activities putting many stream systems at risk.

Abstract:
Electroanalysis offers cheap and selective analysis of interesting solutions. However, one of the most common drawbacks is the accessibility for electrochemical sensing. By using high-pressure microfluidics with an integrated three-electrode system, new possibilities open for increased accessibility. Therefore, there is a need to fabricate sustainable reference surfaces into highly pressure tolerant microchannels. In this thesis, Ag/AgCl reference surfaces were in-situ fabricated in high-pressure microfluidic chips. This was performed by electroplating Ag on thin film Pt in microchannels and then chlorinating the silver into Ag/AgCl. Electroanalysis of ferrocyanide was carried out in a microfluidic chip using one of the in-situ fabricated Ag/AgCl references. The half-wave potential showed to be around +251 mV and the electrochemical water window was measured to 1400 mV with a range between -300 mV and +1100 mV. The obtained values show to be comparable to reference data of similar experiments performed elsewhere. For some applications of electrochemistry, a catalysis surface is beneficial. Nanoporous Pt black has proved to generate high catalytic performance in electrochemistry. Therefore, attempts have been carried out to fabricate Pt black onto Pt thin films, with the vision to succeed with such fabrication within microfluidic channels. To summarize, this project work has showed a possibility to in-situ fabricate Ag/AgCl reference surfaces. The project has also showed how to use such surfaces as reference electrodes for electroanalysis in high-pressure microfluidic chips. Lastly, new challenges and ideas to fabricate catalysis surfaces on thin film electrodes in flow channels have been presented. By this thesis, one more step has been taken to increase the accessibility for electroanalysis.

Abstract:
Background: Currently, body composition (BC) assessment is usually performed to diagnose disease states and accurately estimate certain types of tissues. In athletes, performing BC assessments helps gauge training and nutrition programs to see if they are adequately meeting the athlete’s needs to improve performance. Annual Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA) scans before the start of an athlete’s season can help identify an athlete’s preparedness or health before training begins. Objective: To assess the preseason BC of four collegiate sports: Men’s basketball, men’s baseball, women’s volleyball, and women’s soccer, for Fat Mass (FM), bone mineral density BMD), Fat-Free Mass (FFM), and visceral adipose tissue (VAT). Methods: DXA (Lunar iDXA, GE Healthcare) scans were performed before the start of pre-season training for Men’s Basketball, Baseball, Women’s Volleyball, and Women’s Soccer. End-season DXA scans were performed after the end of the regular season for Men’s Basketball and Baseball athletes. Visceral Adipose Tissue was measured using CoreScan software provided by GE and Fat Mass Index (FMI) and Fat-Free Mass Index (FFMI) were calculated from scanned values. Results: Between the various sports, there were several significant differences that were apparent. Height and percentage of Fat Mass (%BF) were significantly different between all sports except Women’s Volleyball and Women’s Soccer. BMI, VAT, and FFMI were significantly different between males and females. Changes over a season showed increased BMD in Men’s Basketball (2.79 to 2.99 Z-score, pre to end of season scan respectively; p < 0.001). No other observations were noticed to be significant. Conclusions: Sports-specific training and sex have large influences on the body composition of athletes. FMI and FFMI are two indices that may have a stronger indication to health than parameters considered for those who are sedentary and non-active. Female athletes have little to no amounts of VAT and this warrants further investigation.

Cardakli, Ismail Seckin. "Production Of High Carbon Ferromanganese From A Manganese Ore Located In Erzincan." Master's thesis, METU, 2010. http://etd.lib.metu.edu.tr/upload/12612604/index.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
Main purpose of this study was to investigate the production of high carbon ferromanganese by smelting a manganese ore located in Erzincan. Time, charge basicity, fluorspar addition and coke to ore weight ratio were used as experimental variables. After characterization of the ore, a mixture of 100 grams of uncalcined manganese ore and carefully weighed amounts of coke powder, lime, fluorspar and scrap iron were put into a conical graphite crucible. The graphite crucible with its contents was covered with a graphite lid and placed in an electronically controlled muffle furnace. The furnace was heated to 1600 oC and held at this temperature for a predetermined time and cooled to room temperature. The crucible was taken out of the furnace and the metal and slag phases formed were removed from the crucible by breaking the crucible and carefully weighed. Finally, the metal and slag phase were subjected to chemical analysis. The experimental results show that Erzincan manganese ore can be used in the production of high carbon ferromanganese.

Abstract:
This dissertation studies models of belief-dependent motivations in three essays. The first essay studies the Koszegi-Rabin model of reference-dependent preferences in a laboratory experiment. The propose a model where the reference point to which consumption outcomes are compared is endogenously determined as a function of lagged, probabilistic beliefs. This paper presents an experiment designed to test some predictions of the Koszegi-Rabin model. The experimental design controls for potential confounds suggested by their theory. The experimental results support their prediction of an endowment effect but do not show the attachment effect predicted by their model. The second essay, coauthored with Martin Dufwenberg and Matt Van Essen, studies how revenge may mitigate the hold-up problem from contract theory. When contracts are incomplete or unenforceable, inefficient levels of investment may occur due to hold-up. If individuals care for negative reciprocity these problems may be reduced, as revenge becomes a credible threat. However, negative reciprocity has this effect only when the investor holds the rights of control of the investment proceeds. We explore this issue analytically, deriving predictions for hold-up games which differ as regards assignment of rights of control. We also test and support these predictions in an experiment.Revenge may be driven by anger. The third essay proposes two belief-dependent models of anger: frustrated anger and anger from blame, which correspond to differing views of the emotion in the psychology literature. Both models build upon the idea that anger occurs when outcomes differ from players expectations. They differ in that anger from blame also incorporates updated beliefs and a notion of other-responsibility. The models are compared with each other and with existing models of negative reciprocity in several examples.

Abstract:
Although vasovagal syncope (VVS) is a common clinical condition the mechanisms behind VVS remain elusive. Upright posture is the major trigger of VVS and lower limb blood pooling affecting cardiac output has been proposed as a major determinant. The overall aim of this thesis was twofold. First, to develop new methodology for calculating limb venous compliance. Second, to study lower limb venous volume load and cardiovascular responses during hypovolemic circulatory stress caused by lower body negative pressure (LBNP) in healthy women and women with VVS, emphasizing compensatory mechanisms to maintain central blood volume. Net fluid filtration was associated with an underestimation ofvenous compliance. This could be accounted for with a correctionmodel. Further, a new venous wall model made it possible to adopt thevenous pressure-volume curve through the entire pressure range andthus provide a valid characterization of venous compliance. Calf blood pooling was similar between the groups and was not associated with tolerance to hypovolemic circulatory stress. Venous compliance was reduced at low venous pressures in VVS and correlated with decreased tolerance to circulatory stress. VVS women displayed attenuated sympathetic vasoconstrictor responses during graded circulatory stress, and mobilization of arm capacitance blood as well as capillary fluid absorption from extra- to intravascular space were reduced. Accordingly, more pronounced reductions in cardiac output were found in VVS. Thus, reduced compensatory mechanisms to maintain cardiac output could contribute to the pathogenesis oforthostatic VVS. In healthy women, rapid pooling in the lower limb was associated with higher tolerance to circulatory stress and more efficient cardiovascular responses, in part due to speed-dependent baroreflex-mediated sympathetic activation. In VVS however, rapid lower limb blood pooling was associated with lower tolerance and deficient cardiovascular responses. No speed-dependent baroreflexmediated sympathetic activation was found in VVS, indicating welldefined differences in cardiovascular regulation already in the initial responses to orthostatic stress.

Full text
Abstract:
Objectives: To explore if joint mobility, as a measure of connective tissue quality, could be a predictor for pregnancy-related low back pain after pregnancy and to evaluate local corticosteroid injection treatment in women with persistent pelvic girdle pain long after childbirth. Material and methods: To investigate joint mobility in relation to pain, 200 women were examined repeatedly from early pregnancy until three months after delivery. Their mobility in left fourth finger abduction in early pregnancy was compared with clinically assessed low back and pelvic pain 3 months after delivery. To evaluate local corticosteroid injection treatment, 36 women with persistent PGP were included in a randomised controlled trial (RCT) and randomised to either corticosteroid injection or saline injection on one occasion at the ischial spine bilaterally, with a follow-up after four weeks. In both studies, the women were asked about obstetric history, to complete a pain drawing, estimate their level of pain on a visual analogue scale (0-100) and estimate how they manage their everyday activities on a questionnaire, Disability Rating Index (DRI). In the RCT, the 36 women also completed Short Form 36 (SF-36), a quality of life questionnaire, six-minute walk test (6MWT), and isometric trunk flexion and extension were examined. Results: Women with low back and pelvic pain three months after pregnancy had increased finger laxity in early pregnancy. The larger the finger angle and the more pregnancies, the greater the risk of low back and pelvic pain after pregnancy. In the RCT, at follow-up, the women who received corticosteroid injection treatment improved in walking ability, estimated physical ability and isometric trunk extension more than those who received saline injections. Conclusions: Increased joint mobility, as measured by finger joint mobility, together with the number of previous pregnancies, may be an indicator of low back and pelvic pain postpartum. One single corticosteroid injection treatment to intra-pelvic structures improved function in women with persistent PGP which may indicate a source of pain.

Abstract:
This research examined to what extent the two Muslim dynasties, the Umayyad and the Fāṭimid, applied Islamic teachings in dealing with Christian sacred places in Palestine. It also compared the two dynasties, in terms of tolerance towards Christian sacred places, with special reference to the Caliphs ‛Abd Al-Malik ibn Marwān and Al-Ḥākim Biamrillah in an attempt to explore the reasons leading to such an attitude. This research outlined a theoretical framework, which Muslims were supposed to have adopted in their dealings with Christian places based on the various opinions of the exegetes from both Sunnī and Shī‛ī interpretations of the Qur'ān besides the practice of Prophet Muḥammad and his Companions in addition to the opinions of the jurists. The outline shows that the teachings of Islamic core sources have the rules for the protection of churches and other places of worship The findings have shown that the attitude would, to a large extent, correspond with the Islamic teachings in the manner of dealing with Christian sacred places under the two different dynasties. As for the Umayyads, the historical accounts and the archaeological evidence have indicated that the old churches and monasteries were kept protected, many new churches and monasteries were erected, several of the ruined ones were rebuilt, and renovation was made. In addition, the rituals were performed publically and pilgrimage continued. The Umayyads also showed formally their respect to the Christian sacred places. However, the economic decline during that period with its natural disasters, the political situation, peaceful abandonment, and demographical changes were the main reasons behind the decline in the number of churches, rather than a passive change in the Muslims' attitude. As for the Fāṭimids, the historical accounts have proved that formally the state shared in the celebrations, permitted the Cross display and allowed the pilgrimage flow to continue. Few institutions were newly built under the Fāṭimids when compared to the number under the Umayyads. This might indicate that the Fāṭimids in particular followed a certain policy backed by the political situation. In this regard, the researcher argues that the strategic and political circumstances played a pivotal role in elevating this policy which was mainly linked to the relationship with the Byzantine Empire. Still, apart from the destruction of the Holy Sepulchre, no physical evidence showed that there was a deliberate destruction of churches and monasteries based on any formal policy. In respect to the actions of ‛Abd Al-Malik ibn Marwān and Al-Ḥākim Biamrillah, the research has revealed that the acts of both did not seem to show hostility towards the Church of the Holy Sepulchre and the other Christian sacred places. ‘Abd Al-Malik did not consider the Holy Sepulchre as a threat. Similarly, Al-Ḥākim's action was an exception among his fellow Fāṭimid caliphs and when exploring the reasons for the destruction, it has been suggested that his personal character played a major role, which together with the political and social motivations led to his actions. The Holy Sepulchre and the other churches were rebuilt during the Fāṭimid ruling, which testified that enmity was not the attitude towards the Christian sacred places. The research has also suggested that however the two dynasties appear to be tolerant in dealing with Christian sacred places, not all the motivations that led to this attitude were very alike. It has been suggested that the Umayyads' policy in keeping the political, economic, and social stability of the Muslim state made it a necessity to keep the good relations with the influential Christian community, thus, positively deal with their sacred places. While the Fāṭimids tended to positively treat the Christians because they wanted to retain the Christians on their side as a minority supporting the Ismā‘īlī Fāṭimids who were ruling over the Sunnī majority and whom they failed to convert to the rulers' own creed.

Barbau, Raphaël. "A reference architecture for archival systems with application to product models." Phd thesis, Université de Bourgogne, 2013. http://tel.archives-ouvertes.fr/tel-00924492.

Abstract:
Nowadays, a major part of the information is in digital form. Digital preservation is essential to allowpeople to access information over time. From a computer science perspective, two major objectiveshave to be met to enable digital preservation: developing archival systems to manage the preserveddigital information, and select information representations that will facilitate the preservation. For complexinformation such as product models, these two objective are particularly hard to meet. Archivalsystems have to operate in a complex environment, interact with many different systems, and supportmay different business functions. Product model representations do not use all the possibilitiesof computer interpretation.Regarding the development of archival systems, the key is to determine what has to be described toprove that the archival system can effectively support the digital preservation. The Reference Modelfor an Open Archival Information System (OAIS) proposes a terminology to describe and comparearchives. The Audit and Certification of Trustworthy Digital Repository (ACTDR) provides criteria forthe certification of archives. One issue with these efforts is that there is not guidance on how to usethem within archival system descriptions. This thesis proposes a method called Reference Architecture for Archival Systems (RAAS) to describearchival systems implementations. RAAS relies on the DoD Architecture Framework to describethe various aspects of the archival systems. Moreover, RAAS provides an archival-specificterminology inspired by the OAIS Reference Model. RAAS also explains how the archival systemdescription can help for the ACTDR certification.RAAS is applied to a product model preservation case, to describe the various aspects of the archivalsystem. This description includes the interactions involving the archival systems, the archival systemfunctions, the definition of the preserved content, and the definition of the metadata. This descriptionformally refers to the OAIS terminology, and provides ACTDR certification evidence. This thesis also address the representation of product models by proposing the translation of productmodels from STEP to OWL. STEP is a standard for product model representation. The use ofOWL enables semantic relationship to enrich product information, and improve the search and theunderstanding of this information using data integration. The methodology used in this thesis can apply to other types of information, such as medical records
