Huang, Yu-Hui. "Crisis management : a case study of China Airlines' 1998 crash in Taiwan." Virtual Press, 2002. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/1231402.

Full text
Abstract:
The researcher conducted a case study analysis of China Airlines' crisis management during its 1998 crash in Taiwan, the worst in the airport's history. The researcher looked for evidence of Gonzalez-Herrero and Pratt's crisis theory in China Airlines' crisis management by identifying the following parts of the theory: issue management, planning prevention, the crisis, and the post-crisis.The researcher sought to suggest the use of Gonzalez-Herrero and Pratt's crisis theory in the formative research of China Airlines crisis management and to help public relations planners in the airline industry understand how crisis management incorporating Gonzalez-Herrero and Pratt's crisis theory could be presented and disseminated.Procedures began with collection of facts and interviews with the key public relations personnel of China Airlines. Next, the researcher applied Gonzalez-Herrero and Pratt's crisis theory to the China Airlines case for analysis. In addition, by viewing the other two airlines crash cases, this study provided a comparison of their crisis management strategies. The researcher followed Miles and Huberman's (1994) guidelines for addressing reliability and validity.Recommendations for improving China air's crisis management would be to use issue management, planning prevention, the crisis, and the post-crisis, the four steps of Gonzalez-Herrero and Pratt's crisis theory, for managing crises. The researcher also recommends periodical internal drills for different crises, and establishment of organizational legitimacy and authority.Limitations of the study included the legitimacy of qualitative research, that the study included the legitimacy of qualitative research, thus the study may not be considered a case study in the strictest sense, and that crisis management did not intentionally incorporate the process of Gonzalez-Herrero and Pratt's crisis theory in China Airlines' crisis management because of the company's culture issue.Further research on the China Airlines' crisis management should be conducted to evaluate its effectiveness and the culture issue.

Abstract:
With the rapid and large increase of waste quantities, China, surpassed the USA as the world’s largest municipal solid waste (MSW) generator since 2004. The phenomena and critical issues of MSWM in China inspired this paper to investigate and analyse the MSWM in an urban area of China. Comparing with the increasing rates of MSW generation, little has been done concerning the municipal solid waste management (MSWM). Not only the local government and authorities are responsible for the MSWM, but also the individuals are playing a significant role in MSWM. An integrated waste management system should be built in order to improve the holistic MSW system and reduce the waste production. The aim of the study is to investigate and analyse the current status and problems of MSWM in an urban area of China and to analyse to what extent a viable reduction of the MSW can be implemented and management systems to be improved in the near future. In this study, two case studies of Shanghai and Linköping are employed and compared to explore the challenges and potentials for improving the MSWM system in China. The result indicated that inadequate facilities and infrastructure, less advanced technology, insufficient public participation, low awareness of environmental protection, problems in policy and laws are the major barriers for the improvement of MSWM. Involving international environmental cooperation activities, planning a sustainable and comprehensive policy and framework for MSWM, introducing economic incentive approaches, promoting the capacities of waste management technologies, raising public environmental awareness are believed to be viable solutions to improve the MSWM system in China.

Online retailing has been a significant part of people's daily life. Research shows that 85% of internet users have purchased online. In China, with the increased penetration rate of internet and adoption of online payment, the online retailing is accounting for a larger percentage of overall retailing volume year by year. However, the lower barrier to entry of online retailing compared to traditional retailing makes the competition more intense than ever. In addition, several leading online retailing companies in the US experienced unprecedented obstacles when attempting to expand in China. This leaves an open question- what is the right strategy in online retailing? The objective of this thesis is to identify to best online retailing strategies in China by examining the online business environment of US and China and distilling current strategies of successful online retailing companies in both countries. The research has been based on case studies of leading online retailing companies. Four lenses, including operational excellence, customer intimacy, product leadership and platform leadership, have been used to explore the unique positions these companies have chosen, and the different set of activities they employed to achieve the positions.

Cong, Xioming. "Towards a framework of knowledge management in the Chinese public sector : a case study of China customs." Thesis, Northumbria University, 2008. http://nrl.northumbria.ac.uk/701/.

Full text
Abstract:
There is intensive research in knowledge management study for the private sector in Western countries. However, less research has been done for the public sector, and none has been done in the Chinese public sector. The motivation is that knowledge management issues in the public sector are much neglected in the Chinese public sector. Moreover, compared with knowledge management in the private sector, knowledge management in the public sector has received much less attention. This thesis investigates issues and difficulties and important factors in the process and the implementation of knowledge management for Chinese public organizations and to help them have a better understanding of the process of the knowledge management by developing a framework that is applicable to the Chinese public sector. To address issues and difficulties in the Chinese public sector, this study explored how knowledge management can be applied to the Chinese public organization context. This involves complicated social processes such as social relationships both in and outside the organization. This research takes a social constructionist paradigm, trying to understand and interpret the Chinese public managers' unique experiences, perceived values and embedded Chinese culture that can have great impact on the application of knowledge management to the Chinese public organization. In line with this philosophical stance, Forty three Customs officers in China Customs, mainly at middle or lower level of management, were involved in qualitative interview, with data analyzed through content analysis. The research findings indicate that China Customs has been engaging knowledge management activities all the time although there is no explicit mentioning of the term `knowledge management' and staff has insufficient perception and awareness of the concept of knowledge management. Its management style is strongly influenced by Chinese political system and the Chinese traditions. Therefore, to effectively manage knowledge, it is necessary to change the mindset of leaders and gain their support financially and morally in fostering a learning and knowledge sharing culture, developing a knowledge management strategy, training and rewarding people, and building an infrastructure for information technology. The study is an in-depth analysis of one large government organization's practice of knowledge management, which has not been studied before. Contributively, this study offers understanding of applying knowledge management to the Chinese public context. By drawing upon experience of Chinese public managers, it extends knowledge management theories and offers a contribution to practice grounded in the Chinese context. Significantly, this thesis develops a framework , consisting five activities of knowledge process and six identified important factors through literature review and interviews, by integrating factors into the whole knowledge management process, providing practical guidance for the Chinese public managers to inform how knowledge will be managed in the Chinese public sector.

Zhang, Shuai. "Information management environment for engineering design in multi-location companies : four case studies in China." Thesis, University of Cambridge, 2019. https://www.repository.cam.ac.uk/handle/1810/286589.

Full text
Abstract:
Information management systems are being developed and introduced to engineering design activities to help companies reuse their information. This trend has been identified in multi-location companies, which operate design departments at various locations. Investigating how multi-location companies can configure their information management environment to fulfil engineers' information needs in design process opens up a research topic for us. A well configured information management environment will require a clear understanding of what designers need from it. A literature review has identified that only a few studies have observed the way in which design practitioners work in an industrial environment; and since these studies were all conducted 10 or 20 years ago within a specific context, their findings may no longer reflect current practice. The first phase of this research investigates the information needs of designers in the vehicle industry, and the different approaches and resources that they currently adopt to fulfil these needs. The findings of this first phase of research are then used to identify further industry-based studies. The second phase of the research focuses on the structures and operations of information management for engineering design. A case study of four multi-location companies was conducted to understand their information management environments (IMEs). Primary data was collected in fieldwork visits to the companies. Inductive grounded coding was applied to analyse the data, revealing the constructs of information management environments at the case companies studied. The analyses identified strategic orientations, structures, organisational enablers and individuals' capabilities in case companies' IMEs. A new classification of IMEs was proposed to understand their structural and operational features. The analyses have implications for how companies should configure their IMEs. The studies reported in this dissertation contribute to theory by providing an understanding of the configuration of IMEs in companies and proposing ways of configuring IMEs in practice. Researchers in the domain of information systems can develop a good understanding of how professional practitioners interact with information environments so that they can propose information management systems or methods that make tangible improvements. This study also helps engineers map out the information environment that they search to acquire information. Chief engineers or managers in companies who are in charge of information management can benefit from the understanding of their own information environment and use the proposed model as a guide to configure their own information management environments. The study also suggests future research directions, such as identifying and proposing the indicators that can be used to measure the performance of information management.

Kang, Yuanfei. "Performance and network governance in international joint ventures: case studies of three China-New Zealand JVs." Thesis, University of Auckland, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/2292/2486.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the relationships between performance, evolution and network governance of international joint ventures from a dynamic perspective. This is accomplished with a two-stage examination of case studies on the China-New Zealand joint ventures in China, involving two case studies in the first stage and one case study in the second stage. The exploratory and narrative research aims to aid theory building in the area of assessment and determination for IJV performance. In an investigation of the case IJVs between the Chinese and New Zealand firms, the study results in the development of three conceptual models of IJV performance and network relationships, namely, the Static Goal Model, the Goal Succession Model, and the Goal Emergence Model. These conceptual models adopt goal attainment as the criterion for assessing UV performance, and address goal attainment from a dynamic perspective by using a network approach. The theoretical models are illustrated and supported by the empirical evidence from the longitudinal case studies. The conceptual models differ from existing models of IJV performance in a number of important aspects, and thus contribute to theory relating to IJV performance in the following ways. These models integrate the concepts from the three research areas of performance, governance structure and dynamic evolution into a conceptual framework addressing IJV performance. Two types (organisational and interpersonal) of IJV network relationships are identified, and complex multiple tiers of network relationships in each type and their influence on JV performance and evolution are discussed. The study highlights the influence of network relationships and their evolution on IJV performance by arguing that IJV performance hinges on whether a trend of institutionalising the mechanism of trust building and conflict resolution and of balancing the network relationships within the IJV arrangement emerges from the process of IJV dynamic evolution. This research was solely undertaken by the author for the purpose of a thesis submitted in fulfilling the requirements for the degree of Ph. D at the University of Auckland.
