Sonesson, Göran. "Meaning Redefined." American Journal of Semiotics 34, no. 1 (2018): 65–86. http://dx.doi.org/10.5840/ajs201851436.

Full text
Abstract:
From the point of view of semiotics, the essential contribution of John Deely consists in having made us all aware of the richness of the Scholastic heritage, and to have explained it to us latter-day semioticians. Even for those, who, like the present author, think that semiotics was alive and well between the dawn of the Latin Age, and the rediscovery of Scholastic realism by Peirce, the notions coined by the Scholastic philosophers are intriguing. To make sense of scholastic notions such as ens reale and ens rationis is not a straightforward matter, but it is worthwhile trying to do so, in particular by adapting these notions to ideas more familiar in the present age. Starting out from the notions of Scholastic Realism, we try in the following to make sense of the different meanings of meaning, only one of which is the sign. It will be suggested that there are counterparts to ens rationis, not only in the thinking of some contemporary philosophers, but also, in a more convoluted way, in the discussion within cognitive science about different extensions to the mind. The recurrent theme of the paper will be Deely’s musing, according to which signs, unlike any other kind of being, form relations which may connect things which are mind-dependent (ens rationis) and mind-independent (ens reale). The import of this proposition is quite different if is applied to what we will call the Augustinian notion of the sign, or to the Fonseca notion, which is better termed intentionality. In both cases, however, mind-dependence will be shown to have a fundamental part to play. Following upon the redefinition of Medieval philosophy suggested by Deely, we will broach a redefinition of something even wider: meaning even beyond signs.

LESHEM, DOTAN. "OIKONOMIA REDEFINED." Journal of the History of Economic Thought 35, no. 1 (January 21, 2013): 43–61. http://dx.doi.org/10.1017/s1053837212000624.

Full text
Abstract:
The paper argues that oikonomia was defined by the ancient Greek philosophers as a sphere in which man, when faced with excessive means, acquires a theoretical and practical prudent disposition in order to comply with his needs and so as to generate a man-made surplus that is to be found outside economy’s boundaries. In order to extricate this meaning, I focus on how the following categories are presented in ancient texts dedicated to the study of the oikonomia in its meaning of household management: i) oikonomia’s form of knowledge; ii) the essence of wealth and its end; and iii) the origin of the excess that appears in the economic sphere.

Hoch, Matthew. "Singing Redefined." Journal of Singing 80, no. 1 (August 15, 2023): 43–50. http://dx.doi.org/10.53830/tzen2570.

Full text
Abstract:
Associate editor Matthew Hoch revisits Walter C. Foster’s 1998 book Singing Redefined, reconsidering its arguments within a twenty-first century context. Hoch uses Foster’s compendium of historical writings on various aspects of voice pedagogy as a starting point for examining the challenging task of defining pedagogic terms and concepts. Hoch argues that published definitions are a product of their era and the endeavor of defining pedagogic concepts is a perpetually moving target that always involves the periodic redefining of terminology as new science emerges and society evolves, recontextualizing our knowledge of the singing voice. The author concludes by speculating on several emerging trends that may inform pedagogic discourse and expand our lexicon moving forward.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper aims at exploring the dramatic utopias staged by Shakespeare in order to reassess the playwright’s ambivalent use of geography and to better understand the function of his imaginary landscapes. I therefore briefly comment upon eight overlapping categories of Shakespearian utopias before studying one of them, i.e. Navarre’s academic utopia, in more detail. Indeed, in Love’s Labour’s Lost, the King significantly banishes all feminine presence from his “little academe”, which is all the more ironical as the real King of Navarre was considered as a womanizer by Shakespeare’s contemporaries. I will then argue that in fact, the playwright uses King Ferdinand’s utopia in order to rehabilitate women and promote a form of Babelian universe instead of the closed, protecting space of his library.
