Abstract:

Abstract:
To render is to give something “cause to be” or “hand over” (from the Latin reddere “give back”) and enter into an obligation to do or make something like a decision. More familiar perhaps in computing, to render is to take an image or file and convert it into another format or apply a modification of some kind, or in the case of 3D animation or scanning. To render is to animate it or give it volume. In this issue, we ask, what it means to render research? How does the rendering of research typically reinforce certain limitations of thought and action? We ask these questions in the context of more and more demands on researchers to produce academic outputs in standardised forms, in peer-reviewed journals and such like that are legitimised by normative values. So, then, how to render research otherwise?

AbstractWe present near-infrared images and spectra of the peculiar radio galaxy Centaurus A. The images reveal extended emission regions at the longer wavelengths and show colours characteristic of reddened starlight. We believe we are seeing stars within the warped disc of Cen A, which are obscured in the optical by dust. Both images and spectra indicate the presence of a compact core, whose colours are much redder than those of the surrounding stars. In the spectrum of the core, detections have been made of [Fe II] 1.644 μm, H2 2.122 μm and Br γ. These lines appear to peak on the nucleus and their presence and width suggest starburst activity.

Full text
Abstract:
Theory suggests that traits under positive selection may introgress asymmetrically across a hybrid zone, potentially driven by sexual selection. Two subspecies of the red-backed fairy-wren ( Malurus melanocephalus ) differ primarily in a sexual signal used in mate choice—red versus orange male back plumage colour—but phylogeographic analyses suggest asymmetrical introgression of red plumage into the genetic background of the orange subspecies. We hypothesized that this asymmetrical introgression may be facilitated by sexual selection if red males have a mating advantage over orange males. We tested this hypothesis with correlational data and a plumage manipulation experiment where we reddened the back plumage of a subset of orange males to mimic males of the red subspecies. There was no correlational evidence of a mating advantage to naturally redder males in this population. Experimentally reddened males sired a similar amount of within-pair young and lost paternity at the same rate as orange males, but they sired significantly more extra-pair young, leading to substantially higher total reproductive success. Thus, we conclude that sexual selection via extra-pair mating is a likely mechanism responsible for the asymmetrical introgression of plumage colour in this system, and is potentially driven by a sensory bias for the red plumage signal.

AbstractA Last affiliation changed 3 to 4 against MS. Please check and confirm if it is fine. small number of the sample of 184 carbon stars in the Magellanic Clouds show signs that they are in the act of evolving off of the asymptotic giant branch. Most carbon stars grow progressively redder in all infrared colors and develop stronger pulsation amplitudes as their circumstellar dust shells become optically thicker. The reddest sources, however, have unexpectedly low pulsation amplitudes, and some even show blue excesses that could point to deviations from spherical symmetry as they eject the last of their envelopes. Previously, all dusty carbon-rich AGB stars have been labeled “extreme,” but that term should be reserved for the truly extreme carbon stars. These objects may well hold the clues needed to disentangle what actually happens when a star ejects the last of its envelope and evolves off of the AGB.

Abstract:
Receiver bias models of signal evolution are typically regarded as alternatives or complements to ornament evolution due to coevolving mate choice, whereas sexually or socially selected agonistic signals are rarely studied with respect to receiver psychology. Against the background of convergent evolution of red agonistic signals from yellow ancestors in the genus Euplectes (widowbirds and bishops), we experimentally test the function of a yellow signal in the montane marsh widowbird ( E. psammocromius ), as well as a hypothesized receiver bias for redder (longer wavelength) hues. In a field experiment in southern Tanzania, males that had their yellow wing patches blackened lost their territories or lost territorial contests more often than controls or reddened males, which together with a longer wavelength hue in territory holders, indicates an agonistic signal function. Males painted a novel red hue, matching that of red-signalling congeners, retained their territories and won contests more often than controls. To our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of a receiver bias driving agonistic signal evolution. Although the sensory or cognitive origin of this bias is yet unknown, it strengthens our view that genetically constrained signal production (i.e. carotenoid metabolism), rather than differential selection, explains the carotenoid colour diversification in Euplectes .

Abstract:
We have recently discovered evidence for a population of radio-loud quasars that is reddened by dust. The dust is either along the line of sight to the quasars or is associated with the quasars. In the latter case the dust may be in molecular clouds in the quasar’s host galaxy, or in a molecular torus around the nucleus. We are planning to use 3 mm observations to search for molecular absorption lines (CO and HCO+) associated with dust at the redshift of these quasars. If any absorption systems are detected we will be able to deduce detailed information about the physical state of the molecular gas, hopefully showing which of the proposed locations of the dust is most likely.

Abstract:
Red clump (RC) stars are one of the best stellar tracers of the structure of the Milky Way (MW) bulge. Here we report a new view of the double RC through luminosity and color distributions of RC stars in nine bulge fields (l = 0.0°, ±4.5°; b = −6.0°, −7.5°, −9.0°) from the Blanco DECam Bulge Survey (BDBS), which covers near-ultraviolet to near-infrared bandpasses. The bright and faint RCs show contrasting distributions in (u − g)0 and (u − i)0 colors but similar distributions in (J − Ks)0 with a variation depending on the Galactic longitude, where the bright RC is typically redder than the faint RC. In particular, the RC stars are clearly divided into the bluer and redder populations when using the (u − g)0 color ((u − g)0 < 2.5 for the bluer RC; (u − g)0 ≥ 2.5 for the redder RC). The bluer stars show a single clump on the faint RC regime, whereas the redder stars form double clumps on both the bright and faint RCs. The bright clump of the redder stars is dominant in the positive longitude fields, while the faint clump of those red stars is significant at negative longitudes. We also confirm that the bluer and redder stars have different peak metallicity through comparison with spectroscopy (Δ[Fe/H] ∼ 0.45 dex). Therefore, our results support a scenario whereby the MW bulge is composed of a spheroid of metal-poor stars and a boxy/peanut shape (X-shape) predominantly made up of metal-rich stars.

Abstract:

Abstract:
ABSTRACT We examine four ancient Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) globular clusters (GCs) for evidence of multiple stellar populations using the Advanced Camera for Surveys and Wide Field Camera 3 on the Hubble Space Telescope Programme GO-14164. NGC 1466, NGC 1841, and NGC 2257 all show evidence for a redder, secondary population along the main sequence. Reticulum does not show evidence for the presence of a redder population, but this GC has the least number of stars and Monte Carlo simulations indicate that the sample of main-sequence stars is too small to robustly infer whether a redder population exists in this cluster. The second, redder, population of the other three clusters constitutes $\sim 30-40{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$ of the total population along the main sequence. This brings the total number of ancient LMC GCs with known split or broadened main sequences to five. However, unlike for Hodge 11 and NGC 2210 (see Gilligan et al. (2019)), none of the clusters shows evidence for multiple populations in the horizontal branch. We also do not find evidence of a second population along the red giant branch.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT We report the discovery of a resolved (0.9 arcsec) substellar companion to a member of the 1–5 Myr Taurus star-forming region. The host star (2M0437) is a single mid-M type (Teff ≈ 3100 K) dwarf with a position, space motion, and colour–magnitude that support Taurus membership, and possible affiliation with a ∼2.5-Myr-old subgroup. A comparison with stellar models suggests a 2–5 Myr age and a mass of 0.15–0.18M⊙. Although K2 detected quasi-periodic dimming from close-in circumstellar dust, the star lacks detectable excess infrared emission from a circumstellar disc and its H α emission is not commensurate with accretion. Astrometry based on 3 yr of AO imaging shows that the companion (2M0437b) is comoving, while photometry of two other sources at larger separation indicates that they are likely heavily reddened background stars. A comparison of the luminosity of 2M0437b with models suggests a mass of 3–5 MJUP, well below the deuterium burning limit, and an effective temperature of 1400–1500 K, characteristic of a late L spectral type. The H − K colour is redder than the typical L dwarf, but comparable to other directly detected young planets, e.g. those around HR 8799. The discovery of a super-Jupiter around a very young, very low-mass star challenges models of planet formation by either core accretion (which requires time) or disc instability (which requires mass). We also detected a second, comoving, widely separated (75 arcsec) object that appears to be a heavily extincted star. This is certainly a fellow member of this Taurus subgroup and statistically likely to be a bound companion.

Abstract:
We have found that 4 new, bright IRAS quasars, out of 7 observed, have strong, non-variable, wavelength-dependent polarization. Three show degrees of polarization, pλ, increasing from infrared to UV wavelengths (Fig. 1), which implies a combination of a polarized, scattered spectrum and a much redder, unpolarized spectrum. Detailed IR and optical polarimetry and spectrophotometry of one, IRAS 13349+2438 (Wills et al.), shows a polarized flux spectrum, pλxFλ, (continuum and Pa α, Hα, and Hβ broad hydrogen lines) typical of unreddened, luminous quasars. This suggests that the path of scattered light from a central, luminous quasar is low in dust and that the polarization of the scattered spectrum is wavelength independent. The latter is most easily explained by electron scattering although the data do not exclude dust scattering. When this polarized flux spectrum is subtracted from the total spectrum, we are left with a very reddened line and continuum spectrum, E(B-V) = 0.3 to 0.7, which we attribute to the same luminous quasar seen through a thick dusty torus. The angle of polarization is parallel to the major axis of the r-band image, presumed to be that of the host galaxy. If the torus is in the plane of the galaxy, the axial ratio suggests a viewing angle of 40° to the plane of the torus. Fig. 2 illustrates the geometry. The appearance of the quasar at optical and UV wavelengths will depend strongly on viewing angle, suggesting that present samples of quasars selected by colours, optical flux density, or quasi-stellar appearance, may be seriously biased, with important consequences for studies of the space density and evolution of AGN.

Abstract:
We investigated the effects of a hematophagous nestling mite (Pellonyssus reedi, Acari: Macronyssidae) on the reproductive biology of the house finch (Carpodacus mexicanus) in east-central Alabama, U.S.A. Mites were absent from nests for the first half of the breeding season, but after their initial appearance they increased in number and were present in almost all nests. High nest-mite levels were associated with decreased nestling mass and hematocrit, but not with decreased nestling tarsus length. Experimental elimination of mites from some nests confirmed that the effects observed were mite-induced, not seasonal. The plumage colour of breeding adult male house finches was not correlated with nest-mite levels, nor did it appear that redder males' offspring suffered less from the effects of mites. Adult house finches fed nestlings from highly parasitized nests less often than those from nests with few or no mites. It appears unlikely that mites are directly involved in the sexual selection of bright male plumage coloration in this population of house finches. However, it is known that early-nesting females preferentially pair with redder males, therefore the benefit of nesting early and avoiding mite infestations is greater for redder male house finches.
