Abstract:

Abstract:
To render is to give something “cause to be” or “hand over” (from the Latin reddere “give back”) and enter into an obligation to do or make something like a decision. More familiar perhaps in computing, to render is to take an image or file and convert it into another format or apply a modification of some kind, or in the case of 3D animation or scanning. To render is to animate it or give it volume. In this issue, we ask, what it means to render research? How does the rendering of research typically reinforce certain limitations of thought and action? We ask these questions in the context of more and more demands on researchers to produce academic outputs in standardised forms, in peer-reviewed journals and such like that are legitimised by normative values. So, then, how to render research otherwise?

AbstractWe present near-infrared images and spectra of the peculiar radio galaxy Centaurus A. The images reveal extended emission regions at the longer wavelengths and show colours characteristic of reddened starlight. We believe we are seeing stars within the warped disc of Cen A, which are obscured in the optical by dust. Both images and spectra indicate the presence of a compact core, whose colours are much redder than those of the surrounding stars. In the spectrum of the core, detections have been made of [Fe II] 1.644 μm, H2 2.122 μm and Br γ. These lines appear to peak on the nucleus and their presence and width suggest starburst activity.

Abstract:
Theory suggests that traits under positive selection may introgress asymmetrically across a hybrid zone, potentially driven by sexual selection. Two subspecies of the red-backed fairy-wren ( Malurus melanocephalus ) differ primarily in a sexual signal used in mate choice—red versus orange male back plumage colour—but phylogeographic analyses suggest asymmetrical introgression of red plumage into the genetic background of the orange subspecies. We hypothesized that this asymmetrical introgression may be facilitated by sexual selection if red males have a mating advantage over orange males. We tested this hypothesis with correlational data and a plumage manipulation experiment where we reddened the back plumage of a subset of orange males to mimic males of the red subspecies. There was no correlational evidence of a mating advantage to naturally redder males in this population. Experimentally reddened males sired a similar amount of within-pair young and lost paternity at the same rate as orange males, but they sired significantly more extra-pair young, leading to substantially higher total reproductive success. Thus, we conclude that sexual selection via extra-pair mating is a likely mechanism responsible for the asymmetrical introgression of plumage colour in this system, and is potentially driven by a sensory bias for the red plumage signal.

Abstract:
The present research, divided into two parts, is aimed analysing the function of the interdictal protection in the Roman legal experience, both in terms of content, through the analysis of the individual cases under its cover, and in a dynamic perspective, trying to give a temporal location, however approximate, to its origin and studying the regulation within the different phases of Roman procedural history. The first three chapters examine the overall scope of this remedy, which was accorded to protect a heterogeneous group of legal situations and, according to the most recent epigraphic and papyrus findings, did not remain an expression of the praetor's court in Rome, but was applied in different places of the Empire. In the second part of this work we focus on the procedure that, following the postulatio of the interested party, could lead to the granting of an interdictum. This procedure was not a mere preliminary contingency to the well known iudicia ex causa interdicti but that an autonomous and essential procedure within the interdictal system as a whole.

Rawlings, Mark Graham. "Heavily-reddened lines of sight in the galaxy." Thesis, University of Central Lancashire, 1999. http://clok.uclan.ac.uk/20307/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis presents an investigation into the reddening effects of the diffuse ISM using a subset of stars from the Stephenson (1992) objective prism survey. The survey contained approximately 400 stars, which were originally reported to be heavily-reddened, early-type objects. (B)VRJ photometry of 101 of the stars is presented. Intrinsic colours are inferred, based on the spectral types identified via subsequent optical spectroscopy. These are then used to obtain colour excesses and hence visual extinctions (Ar), using a standard diffuse interstellar reddening law (R= 3.05). Subsequent 6100 - 6900 A spectra of 193 of the Stephenson (1992) stars are then presented. 87% of the spectroscopic sample are K - M stars, 3% are S-type, and 8% are of genuinely early type. Visual extinctions of these fifteen early-type stars are found to lie between 8 and 18'". In addition, measurements of the strengths of four Diffuse Interstellar Bands (DIBs) towards these stars suggest a previously unseen correlation between fl6284 and 6614. II genuine, this correlation does not show a strong dependence on A. Spectroscopy at 3.4 pm of twelve of the genuinely early-type sources is also presented. Aliphatic C - H stretch absorption band strengths at 3.4 pm are listed for eleven of the sources, and found to be consistently weaker per unit extinction than previously measured (e.g. Sandford et al. 1995). This result supports earlier suggestions of 3.4 pm band enhancement towards the Galactic Centre. No global dependence on Galactic longitude is evident in the 3.4 pm band strengths towards the Stephenson stars. Profile fining of the hydrocarbon band towards these sources indicates some variation between lines of sight, but appears to preclude several previously proposed carriers (e.g. photolysed ice residues). No correlations are found between the hydrocarbon band strengths and those of the DIBs, suggesting that if the DIBs carriers are indeed carbonaceous, there is little direct interaction between them and the solid-phase, aliphatic material in dust grains.

Wethers, Clare. "The host galaxies of luminous reddened quasars at z~2." Thesis, University of Cambridge, 2018. https://www.repository.cam.ac.uk/handle/1810/287575.

Full text
Abstract:
The work in this thesis concerns the host galaxies of a class of luminous, yet heavily-obscured, quasars at z$\sim$2 - a peak epoch of both star formation and black hole accretion. Here, we seek to characterise the star-forming properties of these obscured quasars to improve our understanding of galaxy-quasar coevolution. A key issue facing host galaxy studies among populations of the most luminous quasars is being able to disentangle the galaxy emission from that of the quasar. With combined observations from the Dark Energy Survey (DES), the VISTA Hemisphere Survey (VHS) and the UKIDSS Large Area Survey (ULAS), we exploit the quasar dust extinction in our sample to demonstrate that the quasar and galaxy emission can be separated via SED-fitting in these systems. By isolating the galaxy emission in this way, we estimate instantaneous SFRs for the galaxies in our sample, based on the restframe UV emission. In general, we find obscured quasars to reside in prodigiously star forming hosts with 25 $\lesssim$ SFR$_{\rm{UV}}$ $\lesssim$ 365 M$_{\rm{\odot}}$yr$^{-1}$. Furthermore, we show that the most luminous quasars reside in the most actively star-forming galaxies, potentially indicating the same gas supply is fuelling both star formation and accretion on to the black hole. Having isolated the galaxy emission via SED-fitting, we test our ability to model the restframe-UV emission of obscured z$\sim$2 quasar hosts in 2D. Until now, morphological studies of luminous quasar hosts have typically been limited to low redshifts or relied on space-based imaging. By making use of a multi-band modelling code however, we demonstrate that it is possible to accurately infer several galaxy properties (i.e. the position of the galaxy in the image, (X,Y), its radius, R$_{\rm{eff}}$, axis ratio, q$_{\rm{GAL}}$, angle of orientation, $\theta$, and S\'rsic index, $n$), based on current ground-based imaging, accross the full range of galaxy and quasar luminosities considered in our sample. This potentially opens the door to future ground-based morphological studies of obscured quasars at high redshift. At sub-mm wavelengths, thermal emission from cold dust peaks, meaning these wavelengths can be used to probe the dust heating by star formation, effectively giving a measure of the obscured star formation in the galaxy. Using targeted observations from SCUBA-2, we trace the 850$\mu$m emission in a sample of obscured quasars, finding evidence for prodigious star formation $ > $ 2400 M$_$yr$^$ in three of the 19 quasars in our sample. The detection rate of our obscured quasar sample is found to be consistent with that of both more heavily-obscured Hot-DOGs and UV-luminous quasars, once the samples have been matched in luminosity and redshift. Furthermore, we find evidence that several of the obscured quasars lie in overdense regions of the sky ($\sim$ 3 times denser than sub-mm blank fields).

Full text
Abstract:
The intrinsic colors of Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) are important to understanding their use as cosmological standard candles. Understanding the effects of reddening and redshift on the observed colors are complicated and dependent on the intrinsic spectrum, the filter curves, and the wavelength dependence of reddening. We present ultraviolet and optical data of a growing sample of SNe Ia observed with the Ultraviolet/Optical Telescope on the Swift spacecraft and use this sample to re-examine the near-UV (NUV) colors of SNe Ia. We find that a small amount of reddening (E(B - V) = 0.2 mag) could account for the difference between groups designated as NUVblue and NUV-red, and a moderate amount of reddening (E(B - V) = 0.5 mag) could account for the whole NUVoptical differences. The reddening scenario, however, is inconsistent with the mid-UV colors and color evolution. The effect of redshift alone only accounts for part of the variation. Using a spectral template of SN2011fe, we can forward model the effects of redshift and reddening and directly compare those with the observed colors. We find that some SNe are consistent with reddened versions of SN2011fe, but most SNe Ia are much redder in the uvw1 - v color than SN2011fe reddened to the same b - v color. The absolute magnitudes show that two out of five NUV-blue SNe Ia are blue because their near-UV luminosity is high, and the other three are optically fainter. We also show that SN. 2011fe is not a "normal" SN Ia in the UV, but has colors placing it at the blue extreme of our sample.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Green thunderstorms are observed occasionally. Only the severest thunderstorms are green. With one exception, they have received no scientific attention, experimental or theoretical. Fraser suggested that a thick thunderstorm provides a dark backdrop. Greenness is a consequence of reddened sunlight illuminating selective scatterers along the observer’s line of sight. Thus a thunderstorm is not green, it is a black backdrop for green airlight near sundown. An alternative explanation, more in accord with my observations, is that green thunderstorms may be a consequence of the intrinsic blueness of clouds because of absorption by pure water, liquid or ice. Most clouds are so thin that the light transmitted by them is not markedly colored because of absorption. Only the most massive clouds, large both vertically and horizontally, are thick enough to color incident sunlight upon transmission. If that incident light is reddened, the transmitted light can be perceptually green.

Abstract:
The highly successful AO program at the UH is now planning to expand the curvature technology into higher order correction systems with a unique Vis/IR WFS concept.. Computer simulation have been carried out scaling the current 13 element system now being used at the CFHT on Mauna Kea to a 36 element design. The Vis-IR WFS sensor is expected to increase the performance overall, all as it is used to study young stellar objects that are at many times deeply reddened. An example is HL Tau, in the visible it is around magnitude 14 and at the H band it magnitude 9 or 100 times brighter!

Full text
Abstract:
In the majority of studies of the Bezold–Brucke phenomenon, the observers have matched spectral stimuli of disparate luminance in hue by a wavelength adjustment. We used an asymmetric matching technique to match stimuli of disparate luminance in hue and saturation. We used a PIXAR imaging system to generate 28 equiluminant (110 effective td) colors on a Sony monitor. Two rectangular stimuli (1.3° × 2°) were presented, one to each eye, in a haploscope. One stimulus was reduced in luminance by placing a 1-log-unit filter before one eye. The observer adjusted the hue and saturation of the brighter stimulus until the two patches looked chromatically identical, although of different brightness (as if a mesh curtain obscured the dimmer side). One match per color was repeated on three separate days. The entire experiment was performed with a dark surround and with an equiluminant surround. With a dark surround, the matched colors were set redder or greener, consistent with the Bezold–Brucke phenomenon for spectral colors. Additionally the saturation was reduced for reds and greens. With an equiluminant surround, only desaturation was required.

Full text
Abstract:
Two often dramatic phenomena are occasionally seen at sunset: the green flash and the Chinese lantern sun. Special atmospheric conditions are necessary for both. The green flash deserves to be divided into two distinctly different types. The more common type arises when a distant sharp horizon feature like a mountain profile cuts sequentially the vertical spread of the solar disk from normal atmospheric refraction, thus allowing the green to be seen after the longer wavelengths are cut off, the blue portion being attenuated by absorption in the long atmospheric path. A much more dramatic green flash is seen primarily in the tropics. It generally lies distinctly above an ocean horizon and appears a moment after the last reddened direct image of the upper limb of the sun has disappeared. It can be surprisingly bright. The mechanism appears to be the ducting of sunlight in a moist layer lying above a warm sea.
