Abstract:
Since environmental benefits and supply chain resilience are commonly assumed for circular economy strategies, this study tests this hypothesis in the context of lithium-ion battery recycling and cell manufacturing. Therefore, the use of recyclates from different cathode active materials and from different recycling routes, namely hydrometallurgy and direct recycling, in a subsequent cell production is modelled with the recyclate quotas prescribed by the amended European Battery Regulation and analysed using life cycle assessment methodology. This study concludes that both, negative and positive environmental impacts can be achieved by the usage of recyclates, depended on the cell technology and the recycling process chosen. Newly constructed lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells using a share of 11.3% of recyclates, which are obtained from LFP cells by a hydrometallurgical process, achieve a deterioration in the ecology by 7.5% for the global warming potential (GWP) compared to LFP cells without any recyclate share at all. For the same recyclate quota scenario, hydrometallurgical recyclates from lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide cells (NMC), on the other hand, achieve savings in GWP of up to 1.2%. Recyclates from direct recycling achieve savings in GWP for LPF and NMC of a maximum of 6.3% and 12.3%, by using a recyclate share of 20%. It can be seen that circular economy can raise large savings potentials ecologically, but can also have a contrary effect if not properly applied.

Abstract:
This study is a contribution to the quantification of greenhouse gas emissions in the waste sector in developing countries, especially through the determination of specific emission factors. The purpose is to determine the greenhouse gas emission factors of the various waste treatment units at the waste treatment and recovery centre in Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso) using the Life Cycle Analysis method. The emission factors were evaluated and then reduced to an equivalent CO2 emission per tonne of waste. The results show that landfill has the highest emission factors, with values ranging from 751.19 to 1,818.6 kg CO2 eq/tonne of waste for direct emissions, depending on whether or not sequestered carbon is taken into account, and from 7.24 to 1.31 kg CO2 eq/tonne for indirect emissions. Composting and plastic recovery units have negative EFs over their entire life cycle (-69.69 and -1736.65 Kg CO2 eq/tonne), thus contributing to net greenhouse gas savings. This study is the first of its kind to provide data that can be used for national accounting of greenhouse gas emissions in the waste sector

According to the European circular economy strategy, all plastic packaging placed on the market by 2030 has to be recyclable. However, for recycled plastics in direct contact with food, there are still major safety concerns because (non-)intentionally added substances can potentially migrate from recycled polymers into foodstuffs. Therefore, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has derived very low migration limits (e.g., 0.1 µg/L for recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and 0.06 µg/L for recycled high-density polyethylene (HDPE)) for recycled polymers. Thus, the use of recyclates from post-consumer waste materials in direct food contact is currently only possible for PET. A first step in assessing potential health hazards is, therefore, the identification and toxicological classification of detected substances. Within this study, samples of post-consumer recyclates from different packaging-relevant recycling materials (HDPE, LDPE, PE, PP, PET, and PS) were analyzed. The detected substances were identified and examined with a focus on their abundance, toxicity (Cramer classification), polarity (log P values), chemical diversity, and origin (post-consumer substances vs. virgin base polymer substances). It was demonstrated that polyolefins contain more substances classified as toxic than PET, potentially due to their higher diffusivity. In addition, despite its low diffusivity compared to polyolefins, a high number of substances was found in PS. Further, post-consumer substances were found to be significantly more toxicologically concerning than virgin base polymer substances. Additionally, a correlation between high log P values and a high Cramer classification was found. It was concluded that PET is currently the only polymer that complies with EFSA’s requirements for a circular economy. However, better-structured collection systems and cleaning processes, as well as more analytical methods that enable a highly sensitive detection and identification of substances, might offer the possibility of implementing other polymers into recycling processes in the future.

Tandis que l’un (Gatti), interdit de représentation au Théâtre National Populaire, s’éloigne toujours davantage des lieux où le théâtre institué se fait et promeut de nouvelles modalités d’écriture (une « écriture avec » des hommes et des femmes réels, un théâtre portatif, en quête de formulations inédites), l’autre (Vinaver) y fait retour. Opérant la jonction entre ses activités professionnelles à la direction d’une entreprise multinationale et ses activités créatrices, il renonce à dissocier la libération (physiologique, psychique, politique, économique) du recyclage et prétend opposer aux spectres de l’absorption généralisée un objet dramatique insoluble. On-site greywater recycling and reuse is one of the main ways to reduce potable water requirement in urban areas. Direct membrane filtration is a promising technology to recycle greywater on-site. This study aimed at selecting a tubular nanofiltration (NF) membrane and its operating conditions in order to treat and reuse greywater in buildings. To do so, a synthetic greywater (SGW) was reconstituted in order to conduct experiments on a reproducible effluent. Then, three PCI NF membranes (AFC30, AFC40 and AFC80) having distinct molecular weight cut-offs were tested to recycle this SGW with a constant concentration at 25°C at two different transmembrane pressures (20 and 35 bar). The best results were obtained with AFC80 at 35 bar: the flux was close to 50 L m−2 h−1, retentions of 95% for chemical oxygen demand and anionic surfactants were observed, and no Enterococcus were detected in the permeate. The performances of AFC80 were also evaluated on a real greywater: fluxes and retentions were similar to those observed on SGW. These results demonstrate the effectiveness of direct nanofiltration to recycle and reuse greywater.

The development of next-generation energy storage devices and systems for electric vehicles (EVs) relies on materials with significantly improved performance and lower cost. The increasing amount of lithium-ion battery (LIBs) consumption will result in the resource shortage and price increase of lithium and precious transition metals (Co, Ni etc.) that are critical for making high-performance LIBs. Also, future batteries that mainly use low-cost materials (Na, Fe, Mn) will have limited economic benefits to recycle even though the wastes generated from disposal of used batteries can cause severe environment pollution. In this context, design of low-cost and energy-efficient recycling and regeneration process for spent batteries is attracting growing interest. From a reversible chemistry point of view, this talk will focus on a potential strategy to directly recycle and regenerate spent LIBs using a “non-destructive” approach, which will lead to new electrode materials that can show the same level of performance as the native materials. We will show successful recycling of various battery materials, including cathode (LiMO2, LiMn2O4, and LiFePO4) and anode (graphite) using the direct regeneration approach. Such a strategy combines fundamental understanding and process optimization for remanufacturing of energy materials. Therefore, it can potentially offer a sustainable solution for future energy storage.

Polymer composites are materials that are used in many industries. Their wide application has a direct impact on the amount of post-production and post-consumer waste. The global problem with recycling, especially of fiber-reinforced polymeric materials, has prompted research into methods of their use. Previous research on composite materials with polyester–glass recyclate showed a decrease in mechanical properties. The construction material should have the highest mechanical properties. Based on the literature, it was found that the use of nanoadditives may have a positive effect on the parameters of the materials. The use of gamma aluminum nanopowder, in a small amount can significantly increase the mechanical properties of composites with polyester–glass recyclate, and thus can affect the application of these materials to structural elements. The article is devoted to the research on the hardness of composite materials with polyester–glass recyclate and gamma aluminum nanopowder. The main goal is to investigate the possibility of using a nanoadditive as a material, increasing the mechanical properties of composites with polyester–glass recyclate, so as to create a recycled material with the highest possible strength parameters. Hardness tests were performed using the Barcol method. For each composite material, 30 measurements were made in order to subject the results to a statistical analysis. Using parametric statistical tests it was shown that the obtained hardness values at the assumed level of statistical significance pv = 0.05 for comparisons for the samples of the reference material (B0) do not differ by chance, while for the comparisons in the configurations of the reference material (B0) with the modified materials, (R10, A2, R10A2) they do not differ by accident. Studies have shown that the addition of 2% gamma aluminum nanopowder slightly lowers the hardness of a pure polyester–glass composite, but the same additive allows the hardness of composite materials to be increased with the addition of glass recyclate. High costs of recycling operations have kept recycling rates low for many consumer electronics. Meanwhile, increasing the adoption of more recyclable electronics among consumers remains a challenge. Motivated by Best Buy’s decision to charge consumers a flat fee to accept their used TVs/monitors for recycling, we study how charging for recycling would influence consumer adoption of recyclable electronics. Through experimental studies, and building on relevant behavioral insights (nudging and the theory of planned behavior), we compare the charging for recycling scenario with free recycling and recycling tax as current baselines. We find that, compared to the baselines, charging for recycling increases the adoption of recyclable electronics as long as consumers are not in emergency purchase situations. Our results suggest a potential alternative to unsuccessful direct green marketing and cast doubt on prohibiting retailers from charging for recycling.

The European strategy for plastics, as part of the EU’s circular economy action plan, should support the reduction in plastic waste. One key element in this action plan is the improvement of the economics and quality of recycled plastics. In addition, an important goal is that by 2030, all plastics packaging placed on the EU market must either be reusable or can be recycled in a cost-effective manner. This means that, at the end, a closed-loop recycling of food packaging materials should be established. However, the use of recyclates must not result in less severe preventive consumer protection of food packaging materials. This may lead to a conservative evaluation of authorities on post-consumer recyclates in food packaging applications. On the other hand, over-conservatism might over-protect the consumer and generate insurmountable barriers to the application of post-consumer recyclates for food packaging and, hence, counteract the targets of circular economy. The objective of this review is to provide an insight into the evaluation of post-consumer recyclates applied in direct contact to food. Safety assessment criteria as developed by the European Food Safety Authority EFSA will be presented, explained, and critically discussed.

O presente trabalho analisa a experiência de catadores de recicláveis do Projeto Novo Ciclo. Além de uma breve introdução e as considerações finais, o artigo apresenta percepções acerca do conceito de Economia Popular Solidária e discute a participação dos catadores de recicláveis na gestão dos resíduos sólidos. Algumas percepções e reflexões sobre a experiência de catadores de recicláveis do Projeto Novo Ciclo, subsidiam o confronto teórico-prático, ou seja, o conceito de economia popular solidária e a experiência desses trabalhadores da reciclagem. A metodologia utilizada consistiu na observação direta e observação participante, além da presença e intervenções nos eventos realizados. Os resultados, ainda parciais, apontam que as atividades realizadas possibilitaram a implantação e fortalecimento de programas de coleta seletiva solidária em municípios da região sul e sudoeste de Minas Gerais. Apontam também o aprimoramento da formação de catadores e de técnicos gestores públicos municipais da Região, bem como ações voltadas para a educação ambiental e mobilização social. Ações e intervenções que resultaram na criação da rede de comercialização de material reciclável denominada Rede Sul Sudoeste MG.Palavras-chave: Economia Popular Solidária; Catadores de Recicláveis; Projeto Novo Ciclo; Participação e Cidadania.ABSTRACT The Popular Solidarity Economy reveals a reality marked by heterogeneity and diversity. This paper analyzes the experience of recyclable waste collectors of the New Cycle Project. In addition to a brief introduction and the final considerations, the article presents the perceptions about the concept of Popular Solidarity Economy and discusses the participation of recyclable waste collectors in the management of solid waste. Some perceptions and reflections about the experience of recyclable waste collectors of the New Cycle Project, favor the theoretical-practical confrontation, that is, the concept of popular solidarity economy and the experience of these recycling workers. The methodology used consisted of the direct observation and participant observation, besides of the presence and interventions in the events held. The partial results indicate that the carried out activities allowed the implementation and strengthening of selective and solidarity collection programs in municipalities of the south and southwestern region of Minas Gerais. It was also possible to improve the training of collectors and municipal public management technicians in the Region, with actions aimed at environmental education and social mobilization.
