Dorrance, Richard Adams 1951. "National recreation areas: Landscape planning for outdoor recreation." Thesis, The University of Arizona, 1992. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/291979.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is an examination of National Recreation Areas managed by the National Park Service, the Forest Service, and the Bureau of Land Management. It is exploratory in nature and seeks to illustrate their history, how well they are working today, and prospects for the decade of the 1990's. Included is information about the history, benefits, and trends of federal provision of outdoor recreation opportunities. Also included is a section on planning theory and conceptual frameworks--the concept of Multiple-Use, and the theory of Transactive Planning, as developed by John Friedmann. Managers of thirty-six of thirty-seven existing national recreation areas were interviewed by telephone concerning area attributes, the designation process, public support, enabling legislation, impacts of designation, and management mechanisms. A second research effort consisted of the creation of a computer database that serves as an index to the enabling legislation of all thirty-seven areas.

Abstract:
The study is concerned with an examination of outdoor recreation at three forest recreation areas situated within and at the periphery of a large and major population region in Peninsular Malaysia. It was undertaken primarily to investigate the features that describe the use of these areas and to estimate the use-demand and quantification of consumers' surplus. Initially, a brief description of forest recreation in Peninsular Malaysia is presented. This is followed by a review of techniques for estimating consumers' surplus, after which it was concluded that an application of the travel cost method was appropriate for this study. An on-site questionnaire survey was used to gather a reasonable amount of user information. The questionnaire surveys carried out were found to be valuable; the information gathered facilitated the description and analysis of the areas' consumption, travel and use patterns and the behaviour of the users. Thus the surveys also provided information which was appropriate for the application of the travel cost technique. Subsequently, a detailed description of user behaviour is presented. Difficulties of the travel cost approach, were identified and addressed through the use of appropriate sample and extra-sample data. Particular attention was paid to the problems of multi-purpose trips, travel time bias and the influence of alternative sites on participation. Problems with functional forms and the weighting of points for the trip demand model were also given considerable attention. It is believed that the model selected in this study is an improvement on previously known models. The resulting estimates of consumers' surplus for the three areas are reasonably acceptable and conform to a priori expectations. Finally, the main conclusions of the thesis are highlighted and some aspects that have a bearing on planning and management issues are discussed along with brief recommendations for further and future research efforts.

Abstract:

Riverfronts and greenways are our retreat to nature within the urban setting. They provide connections, opportunity for recreation, habitat for flora and fauna, and most importantly spaces that encourage exercise and social interaction. When these areas are located within the urban context, they are especially susceptible to the degradation that comes with the development of an area such as pollution, erosion, and in some cases lack of care or maintenance. The riverfront in Wichita suffers from three hindrances that restrict it from becoming an asset to the community and compromises human and ecological health along the river. Limited accessibility, a lack of recreational amenities, and poor environmental quality all contribute to the river being under-utilized. While these three elements compromise the site, the location makes it a prime candidate for transformation, creating a cohesive riverfront that has great potential to be utilized by the residents of a quickly growing downtown area. Through the establishment of these dilemmas a framework that focuses on the access and awareness, recreational amenities, and corridor enhancement can then be applied to the Wichita Riverfront. The Wichita Riverfront will encompass active and passive recreation that promotes human health through exercise, social interaction, and improved ecological conditions.

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis was to investigate the current status of the accessibility level of campus recreation programs throughout the United States. There were no previous studies available describing the accessibility level in the campus recreation field. This study was conducted with Electronic mail and an on-line survey. Electronic mail messages were sent to inform the possible participants about the study. The participants answered the questions on-line with An Integrated Network Quizzing, Surveying, and Interactive Testing (INQSIT) system. This system enables the researcher to collect, sort and analyze the data. A total of 81 responses were obtained. The main finding is that campus recreation is not accessible for individuals with disabilities for several reasons. Program opportunities for individuals with disabilities are relatively limited compared to the programs offered for the entire campus population. Additionally, there are not enough staff available who are specifically trained for recreation and physical activity programs for individuals with disabilities.

It speaks by itself that in order to find oil, one must know where to look for it. In this thesis I have investigated and created new tools to find salt in the bedrock, and to recreate images according to some parameters, (fractal dimension and lacunarity). The oil prospecting company Schlumberger gathers nowadays a huge amount of seismic information. It is very time consuming to interpret the seismic data by hand. My task is to find a good way to detect salt in the seismic images of the underworld, that can then be used to classify the seismic data. The theory indicates that the salt behaves as fractals, and by studying the fractal dimension and lacunarity we can make a prediction of where the salt can be located. I have also investigated three different recreation techniques, so that one can go from parameters values (fractal dimension and lacunarity) back to a possible recreation. Harris, Lisa Kim. "Recreation in mountain sheep habitat." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1992. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/186064.

Full text
Abstract:
I described recreational use in mountain sheep (Ovis canadensis mexicana) habitat in the Pusch Ridge Wilderness (PRW), Tucson, Arizona. I also examined human attitudes held by PRW recreationists and homeowners within 1 mile (1.6 km) of PRW boundary towards several mountain sheep management options. I used geographic information system modeling and social science survey methodology. Recreational use along two trails that traverse mountain sheep habitat was frequent (66 individuals/day use Pima Canyon trail, 26 individuals/day use Romero Canyon trail) and primarily limited to the lower 3 miles (4.8 km) of the trails. Compliance with existing dog leash regulations is low (41.8% on Pima Canyon trail, 62.8% on Romero Canyon trail). Recreationists and homeowners within 1 mile (1.6 km) of PRW support the elimination of dogs within PRW and support planned burns of PRW to improve mountain sheep habitat. Recreationists and homeowners also support closing all or parts of PRW to protect the long term viability (>100 years) of the sheep population. Homeowners within 1 mile (1.6 km) of PRW primarily enjoy passive recreational use of PRW (i.e, viewing the wilderness).

Abstract:

This study assessed the motivation and interest in outdoor recreation activities as facilitated by a campus recreation center. The sample consisted of college students enrolled in recreation and kinesiology general education courses at a four-year public California university, and student users of the Student Recreation and Wellness Center. The study assessed each student's previous twelve month participation in outdoor recreation activities, their preference of who they would like to participate in these activities with, the reasons why they participate in outdoor recreation activities, and demographic information. The questionnaire used to collect data was the Motives for Physical Activities Measure – Revised (MPAM – R) modified to MPAM – R + Nature, which assessed the motivational factors of Interest/Enjoyment, Competence, Appearance, Fitness, Social, and, Affinity for Nature.

Results revealed that there was not a difference in the six motivational factors and high versus low motivation to participate in outdoor recreation activities. However, when respondents were grouped as having a high score on intrinsic factors (interest/enjoyment, competence, nature, and social) versus high scores on the extrinsic factors (fitness and appearance), those respondents who were highly motivated showed more interest in outdoor recreation participation. The research also showed most respondents preferred participating with friends or in groups, regardless of the outdoor activity. The evidence from this study suggests that students who are interested in outdoor recreation activities are not distinct or unique based on demographic variables. However, the results did reveal that males were more motivated by competence. Overall, students who participate in outdoor recreation activity are motivated more by companionship preferences. This research supports the idea that social interactions, whether with friends or with a group or class, are important to students.

Peters, Natasha. "Management competencies of managers in community recreation centres in Johannesburg : a recreation perspective / Natasha Peters." Thesis, North-West University, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/4727.

Full text
Abstract:
In 2008, 75% of municipal sport and recreation facilities in South Africa were underutilised, while 62% of these facilities were reported to be poorly managed (SRIMP, 2008). A possible reason for these reported findings can be the lack of managerial skills. However, Goslin (2003:39) mentions that little research on recreation management and education has been done in South Africa, which highlights the increasing need for knowledge to establish and maintain future management practices (Goslin, 2003:40). Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the management competencies applied by recreation managers for effective management of local community centres. In addition, this study compares the gaps between the recreation managers’ qualifications and the requirements for successfully providing the public with quality recreation opportunities in community centres. A qualitative method was applied as a practical guide for the research. The seven regional recreation managers of the City of Johannesburg were selected for the case study. The sample size (n=5) was determined through data saturation. Data was gathered by means of a semi–structured interview with each regional manager (De Vos, 2005:296; Veal, 2006:386). Through the process of data analysis two main categories were identified. The first, Tasks and limitations experienced by regional managers in Johannesburg pointed out that the daily tasks of facility, programme and human resource management is seen as essential responsibilities to recreation managers and it is unfortunate that the majority of problems relating to these tasks are due to unskilled staff that must be supervised on a daily basis. The second, Training needs of recreation staff at recreation centres: Regional managers’ perspective indicated that the staff’s inability to understand the term recreation may in fact be caused by organisations’ bad choices regarding employment or the lack of setting clear criteria for job positions (Mull et al., 2005:227). The answer to training needs for already employed personnel, saving both money and time, may be short courses. By working with each specific centre’s problems and training needs, as well as with each individual employee’s competencies, the short courses could be designed to specifically help better equip the staff member and in turn provide better recreation services to the community.

Abstract:
As baby boomers age, the population of the United States moves toward a higher proportion of elderly than ever before. These seniors retire earlier, have more discretionary income, active lifestyles and education. They also have a growing interest in fitness--challenging future outdoor recreation planning. Providers of public outdoor recreation, including the U.S.D.A. Forest Service, are under pressure to accommodate all population groups--including seniors. An emerging problem for recreation planners is how to address the special needs generated by this important demographic shift. To explore this issue, the author studied the retirement community Green Valley, Arizona's influence on the Forest Service's Madera Canyon Recreation Area. The study identified Madera Canyon as a model for successful recreation planning by enlisting volunteers, encouraging user participation, providing trails with different experiences, benches, wildlife viewing, and educational opportunities in natural areas, to meet senior's needs. The author provides planning guidelines.

Walker, Gordon James. "Conceptual Development and Empirical Testing of an Outdoor Recreation Experience Model: The Recreation Experience Matrix (REM)." Diss., Virginia Tech, 1997. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/30474.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation examines four issues, including: (a) whether outdoor recreation experiences not included in the Recreation Experience Preference (REP) scales exist; (b) whether these experiences can be categorized using a framework called the Recreation Experience Matrix (REM); (c) how well the Recreation Opportunity Spectrum (ROS) variables of activity, setting, and expertise explain the types of experiences outdoor recreationists receive; and (d) how well two new variables--primary mode and mode dependence--explain the types of experiences outdoor recreationists receive. In order to address these issues, an on-site questionnaire was distributed at Mount Rogers National Recreation Area in Virginia during October and November, 1995 A total of 410 people completed this questionnaire. Of these, 336 provided useable addresses for a follow-up mail-out questionnaire, with 169 (50.3%) actually returning it. After performing a variety of statistical analyses, it was found that: (a) some outdoor recreationists did report having non-REP experiences involving identity, cognition, absorption, and self-concept; (b) indirect support does exist for classifying outdoor recreation experiences using the REM framework; and (c) the ROS variables of activity, setting, and expertise, do explain some outdoor recreation experiences, as do the new variables of primary mode and mode dependence.

Melville, Lauren Marianne. "Recreation planning for mountain resort communities." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1988. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/28173.

Full text
Abstract:
Recreation planners at mountain resort communities must decide what types of recreation facilities and activities to provide in order to meet the diverse needs of the community. This thesis attempts to answer this question specifically for the Resort Municipality of Whistler. Determinants of participation in recreation are highly psychological. Thus, description of potential client groups must rely heavily upon attitudes, perceptions, and behavior. Theories of recreation serve as a useful planning tool helping planners understand peoples' recreation desires. A clear understanding of what people want recreation to accomplish for them is crucial when deciding what type of recreation facilities and activities to provide. However, as discovered when examining resort communities, it is not enough for planners just to take into account functional considerations when planning recreation facilities. Planners must be aware of the resort's image. People typically visit a resort community because they identify with its image. Images are based upon peoples' impressions of the entire resort community, including the facilities offered and both the natural and built environment. The challenge for the planner is to translate peoples' recreation desires into facilities that serve as concrete expressions of the resort's image. This thesis develops as framework to consider such a challenge. This is achieved by: a review of recreation theory and resort planning literature; review of resort communities similar to Whistler; informal interviews, and by a survey of Whistler property owners administered by the author. There are three main findings. First, recreation theory is an invaluable planning tool in helping planners decide what type of recreation facilities to provide. Second, recreation planners can help create a particular type of resort by providing facilities; however, the market eventually determines the resort's status. Third, more substantial market research is required to determine what type of resort the Municipality of Whistler should strive to become.

Abstract:
Nature has been shown to be beneficial for numerous individual outcomes and this article investigates the link between of individual's nature recreation and couples' relationship satisfaction. First, we outline the theoretical underpinnings of nature recreation and couples' relationship satisfaction. Then we examine the following hypotheses: (1) nature recreation has a positive direct effect on relationship satisfaction, (2) there is a positive indirect effect of nature recreation on relationship satisfaction through the environmental effects, and (3) the relationship between nature recreation and relationship satisfaction will be moderated by the recreational factors. These were examined using data obtained from a cross sectional MTurk survey from a diverse group of 520 participants. Structural Equation Modeling was used to analyze the hypotheses. The results showed that the hypotheses 2 and 3 were non-significant but that the indirect effect was significant. These findings were explored, possible explanations for these findings discussed, and future implications were outlined.

Full text
Abstract:
Supply of recreation areas is an important aspect of recreation planning, and this thesis examines one specific aspect of it. In a recent demand and supply study done for the Lower Mainland region, supply was studied by dividing it into two parts, formal and informal. Formal supply of recreation areas are those that have formal designation, such as BC Parks, Regional Parks, municipal parks, BC Forest sites and trails, and BC Hydro Recreation areas. All other areas used for recreation are considered “informal”, and it is these that are discussed in this thesis. The value of informal recreation areas within the recreation opportunity spectrum is examined from a variety of perspectives. Theoretical considerations of recreation planning are presented as background to the remainder of the thesis. The topics: “The Importance and Value of Recreation, Recreation Planning Themes, Relationships and Linkages of Recreation to Other Aspects of Life, and Recreation Place Systems”, are discussed. Following this, a methodology for inventorying them and the most predominant land types used as informal recreation areas are described. Pertinent aspects of inventories and the importance of choosing appropriate activity categories are also examined. The thesis centres on discussions of the non-tangible, psychological and emotional aspects and benefits of outdoor recreation that should be incorporated into recreation planning. Suggestions on ways to achieve these non-tangible objectives using concrete and practical steps are offered.

The development of water-based activities provides varieties for recreationists. However as the demand increased and get stronger, in a limited space, the conflict occurs because of the different behaviors and objectives. The purpose of this study is to investigate the recreational conflict, coping behavior and recreation satisfaction of coastal recreationists of South Bay offshore region in Kenting National Park. The study used convenient sampling method and obtained 418 effective responses. The results of this study suggest that recreation conflict have a direct negative effect on recreation satisfaction, and coping behavior are important to the relationship between recreation conflict and recreation satisfaction. The results are utilized for managerial implications to minimize or prevent further recreational conflicts and to assist future study.

Based on the theories building in the fields of social psychology, consumer and recreation behavior, this research discussed the concept of involvement an individual had for a recreational activity and the properties of its components in the context of entirely social environment. The research tried to measure the construct of recreation involvement with regard to domestic travel from both social psychological and behavioral aspects, explored the impact of touristic socio-demographic characteristics on the dimensions of recreation involvement, and understood the relationship between recreation involvement and recreation attributes evaluated, which could be for marketers to hold the sophisticated interaction between an individual and recreation attributes and for recreational service agencies to provide reference with developing marketing strategies. The results showed that recreation involvement was the multidimensional nature of the construct and its characterstics would be specified simultaneously in terms of social psychological and behavioral involvement profiles. Second, as hypothesized, through the analysis of variance, the results indicated that individual differences might affect the structure related to involvement. With the exception of the variable, the number of children being present at home, recreation involvement was found to be related to sex, age, marital status, occupation, education, income, and the differences in involvement are also significant among the groups. Third, one-way ANOVA of the factor scores confirmed that four subgroups of domestic travelers, each of which showed different recreation involvement profiles, had significant differences in evaluating recreation attributes when making recreaional trip decisions. Furthermore, through a discriminant analysis, findings revealed that recreation involvement was moderately conducive of choice of recreation setting. In the study area, the derived measure of importance-meaning was the most powerful contributor and social connection was the least one. As a whole, this research demonstrated that involvement had potential effect on individuals evaluating recreation attributes and making decisions about travel destinations, and its nature might be grasped through personal variables. Therefore, it was a critical factor to study the leisure experience. Besides, researcher also proposed communication strategies to different target markets and the directions of the future research. It hoped to contribute to drawing marketing plans and understanding certain aspects of leisure behavior in future.

The development of camper vehicles in Taiwan began to accelerate rapidly in the early 1990s. After over a decade of evolution and effort, many camping vehicle agents began to compete in the Taiwanese camper vehicle market. This study aims to explore the personal, psychological, and behavioral aspects of camper recreational participants. The traits, selection, and assessment of the properties of the environmental base for these activities are primarily based on the theories of recreation specialization proposed by Bryan (1977), and the concept of extension proposed by Kristof (1996), Cao Shengxiong, and Lin Wei (2012). This project proposes the idea of recreationist-environment fit (also called RE fit or recreational fitment), which extends the theoretical concept of the interaction between man and the environment to the recreational field, and involves specialization in recreation, recreational and environmental attribute variables, demographic statistics, and participation in variable activities, using empirical research methods such as questionnaires to collect data. A total of 377 valid questionnaires were obtained, and hypotheses were put forward through a literature review and an evaluation of related theories. The hypotheses of this study were tested using the collected data. The results of the study show that participants in the camper car activities analyzed by this survey have a background variable distribution of socio-economic background, mainly as pertains to gender, which focuses heavily on the male population; an age range from 41–50 years old; academic qualifications primarily of university graduates; a marital status of married with children; an average monthly income between 20,001–40,000 yuan; an occupation of primarily military police; and a place of residence mostly in the northern region. The time for camper activities is mostly 2-4 years. The cost of camper-related vehicles is generally less than 20,000 yuan. This study found that participant population changes (age, gender, academic qualifications, marriage, average monthly income, occupation, place of residence, duration of camper activities, average annual cost of camper-related activities) affect recreational involvement (self-fulfillment, attraction, centrality, recreation specialization, commitment, technology and knowledge, behavior, choice of recreational environment attributes, facility, wilderness, reception, management, socialization, congestion). The study also found that recreational involvement (attraction, self-actualization, and centrality) positively affects recreational specialization (commitment, technology, knowledge, and behavior). Recreational involvement (self-actualization, attraction, and centrality) can also affect recreational property selection (facility, wilderness, reception, management, socialization, congestion). Furthermore, the recreational activities of participants in recreational vehicle camping activities affected specialization (promise, technology, and knowledge), and their behavior influenced recreational property selection (facility, wilderness, reception, management, socialization, crowding). Finally, these research results can provide important insights into effective regulations for government agencies, as well as management methods for camper vehicles and related businesses to plan camper car sites and promote camper car activities.

Rae, Kimberley. "Management of a River Recreation Resource: Understanding the Inputs to Management of Outdoor Recreational Resources." Thesis, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10012/3169.

Full text
Abstract:
Research into the use of natural resources and protected areas for the pursuit of outdoor recreational opportunities has been examined by a number of researchers. One activity with growth in recent years is river recreation, the use of rivers for rafting, kayaking, canoeing and instructional purposes. These many uses involve different groups of individuals, creating management complexity. Understanding the various inputs is critical for effective management The Lower Kananaskis River, located in Kananaskis Country in Southwestern Alberta, was area chosen to develop an understanding the inputs necessary for effective management. Specifically, this study explored the recreational use of the river in an effort to create recommendations on how to more effectively manage use of the Lower Kananaskis River and associated day-use facilities in the future. Kananaskis Country is a 4,250 km2 multi-use recreation area located in the Canadian Rocky Mountains on the western border of Alberta. Since its designation, the purpose of the area, has been to protect the natural features of the area while providing quality facilities that would complement recreational opportunities available in the area. Over the years, the multi-use goal of the area has led to issues surrounding the management of the recreational opportunities available, including the multiple use of the Lower Kananaskis River. The Lower Kananaskis River is a section of the larger Kananaskis River, one of six rivers flowing through Kananaskis Country. The Kananaskis River flows for 84 km. northward in the Kananaskis Country from the Upper Kananaskis Lake through the development of the Lower Kananaskis Lake and Barrier Lake to the Bow River. This thesis was only concerned about a small section of this river, the lower portion. The Lower Kananaskis River is a 2 km stretch of the river located within Bow Valley Provincial Park, with an additional 4 km of river outside of the park that many users utilize. This river has become a widely used and well-known recreational paddling destination in Kananaskis Country and Bow Valley Provincial Park and with this has come concerns over its use and management. A mixed methods approach was implemented to examine current use levels Both surveys and participant observations were used to develop a better understanding of current use levels (i.e. time, type) and to gather information from users. At the same time, structured interviews were held with key policy leaders to further explore current management issues and concerns surrounding the Lower Kananaskis River. Analysis of the data collected from river users revealed that the area is widely used by both commercial and recreational users. These two groups of users have learned to adapt to one another’s activities. Both groups expressed high level of satisfaction, but continued growth in use will probably pose problems with user’s experience and satisfaction. In many cases, users also recognized the need for improvements to river infrastructure both on and off the river. Users indicated that changes were needed in the parking areas to accommodate all of the vehicles and users, work was needed at the put-ins and take-outs to accommodate the increases in users along with work on the river features and at the day use sites. Users also recognized that the area is becoming more widely used and feel that changes are needed in how the area is maintained and managed in order to deal with its continued growth. The interviews with policy leaders emphasized the well-known nature of the issues of the area and emphasized issues within the current management structure. Policy leaders were more critical of the current management structure of the river than the users. The critical comments from the policy leaders were expected, as they are more aware of the management issues than recreational users. The policy leaders made many insightful comments for change in the interviews and recognize that park management has shown low levels of understanding and responses to the expressed needs of the users, and recommendations of previous research. This research found several examples of management ineffectiveness. It was concluded that the low levels of response from management is due to the lack of management capability. With the continued growth of the area new management demands can be expected. This in tern will require improved management framework and guideline. With this, it was recommended that increased management capability is required. In order to assist in the development of this capability the research developed an adapted outdoor recreation management framework. Application of this framework would help to ensure that the area is managed more effectively in the future.

As leisure time and per capita increase﹐and especially now people have two days off every two week, more leisure time is available to get enough relax. Since the situation changed , estimation of recreation resource become the most important and necessary work. However, the recreation effects are non-market goods which price cannot be obtained from the real markets. The value of recreational effects has to be evaluated by the non- market goods valuation approach. The travel cost method (TCM) have been widely used and improved since it was developed in 1966. TCM assumes that the cost, which includes travel cost, time cost, fees, lodges, etc., are the price of using recreation effects. Thus, the demand function can be obtained from the regression between cost and visiting times. Then the values of recreation benefit can be measured from this demand function. This study investigate travel cost of visitors in Au-Wan-Da forest recreation area, divide all data into two groups, purposeful visitors and meander visitors, and compare the recreation benefit of these two data sets by using linear-log function. The benefits of Au-Wan-Da forest recreation area are NT 1021 dollars for purposeful and meander visitors and NT 878 dollars for purposeful visitors.

This dissertation focuses on the applications of game theory and optimal control theory to the study of tourist’s recreation choices, revenue management, and recreational specialization in a recreation and leisure industry. The applications present the process of model building, the process of transforming an informal description of recreation-related decision issues to a formal game theory and optimal control problems. There are three essays in the dissertation. The first essay investigates the effects of tourist’s recreation choices and lifestyle, the numbers of local habitant, and agricultural product differentiation upon local habitant benefits, recreational firms’ profits, and the share of firm’s profit with local habitants in a scenic area. It develops a recreation economics model to address the above effects. It shows that when the tourists belong to the positive bandwagon group and choose the firm-specific scenic resort, the firm’s profit is higher as compared to that of under the scenic-specific area effect. The second essay applies the game theory to set up a recreation economics model in which the effects of differentiated tipping systems on firms’ profits, tourist’s consumer surplus, and social welfare are investigated. It demonstrates that firms exert the differentiated tipping systems can increase both consumer surplus and social welfare. The third essay uses an optimal control approach to analyze the case under which a tourist invests his recreation specialization input in pursuing tourism experience and taste to get valuable tourism cognition and the sense of place attachment. It shows that the tourist may not invest recreational experience input in the period of his recreation lifetime as the recreational experience input is relatively harder.

Recreation is an activity that provides amusement and satisf- action in leisure. As fast economy development in Taiwan, the qu- ality of recreation activity and the set of recreation area were considered by people. They are not only tourists'' hopes but also targets for manager, to eliminate exhaustion, to promote harmony and emotion with family, and to get wonderful experience by parti- cipating in recreation activities. In particular, the recreation area have drastically increased at present. In addition to resou- rces and characteristics of the recreation area, the location and environment quality are also important to attract tourists to co- me to get well experience and satisfaction. The allocation of recreation activities will directly influe- nce the attraction of reserves. In this research, based on viewp- oint of recreation experiences by tourists, we investigate the i- mportance of environment for the set of various activities as the analysis of recreation activity area allocation and we study the characteristics of hill land to seek for substantial environment factors which impact the distribution of recreation activities. Through questionnaire survey , we calculate the weight of factors and use the Geography Information System(GIS) to analyze. We are going to establish the suitable recreation area on hill land whe- re the assessment model of activity area location and substanti- al environmental standard for setting activity is according to t- he tourists'' experiences. We hope to advise the decision-maker to select and consider the substantial environment experience for the land use design when the recreation area was developed. To get well interactions between the location of recreation area and ex- perience of tourists and make use of the resources of recreation activities on hill land effectively. This thesis is about the “ Conflict、Recreation and Unity” . The conflict inside of my mind inspired by facing the realistic world. I expect to go over and relax the pressure of life through a kind of self-introspect or belief in religion. There are five chapters in this thesis. The first chapter is an introduction of this dissertation. The second chapter is about the three steps of creation. During this chapter, I will expound the creative thinking in every step. Section one relates the inner conflict and the confusion of mental. Section two is the “ yearn after collapse”,even the “ hope from shock”. Section three is about to return back “Unity”. All these are my feeling and thinking about the whole environment of the world. In the first step, after I had an overview of the history between the West and China, I find, in the West, “ War” made people fear and uneasy on their mind as they went through two World Wars from the Industrial Revolution to the twentieth century. So, people started to think about one question , “What’s the worth of life?” , they doubted. At that moment, “Existentialism” was proposed. It’s the same in Chinese philosophy, people got the idea under suffering the turbulence of country. “War” kept going on during the period of Han , Wei, Jin and the South & North Dynasty. Men felt painful after battle by battle. They thought all the benevolence & righteousness, virtue and morality are nothing. The meaning of human being’s existence became more important. In the second step, based on the theory of psychoanalysis, I explore the problem of how did the people depend on their dream to show the inside world of their subconscious mind. They desired much to relax pressure by means of dream. Or just like the Zhuang Zi’s philosophy to “forget” fame and wealth by learning “forgetfulness” , or just by means of religion…….In the third step, I would like to be an onlooker to see the human history of the past and in the future. In chapter three, I analyze gradually on the technique and the style of my work, including the medias, forms, compositions and signs that I used. Thus, I ponder it much over the Surrealism and Metaphysical painting. In chapter four, this is for the appreciation and analysis of my work. I present eight pieces of work. Here I explore the way of my thought , the form of my content, and the feeling I have. Chapter five comes to a conclusion of my dissertation. Making a report on the whole presentation of my work..

People are increasing the demand and frequency to experience forest recreational activities with the establishment of holiday system and the increment of capita income in recent decade. Valuation of recreational resources benefits is the first important if the best quality of service would be offered and the least resource be brocken, and raise recreational satisfaction to make participants or tourists could have a nice recreational experience. It is necessary and important to monetize the invisible economic benefits (such as interior, spirit, and esthetics) that are produced from recreational resources whatever on academic or resource and environmental mangement policy. The high and low of valuation may be affected by certain factors, interviewee’s background for example. The study value the benefits of recreational resources in Tengjhih forest recreational area, and explore the affecting factors of valuing difference. The contingent valuation method was used to value the benefits. We surveyed 414 normal tourists and 402 potential tourists with personal questionnaire interview.
