Cahir, Fred, Ian Clark, and Philip Clarke. Aboriginal Biocultural Knowledge in South-eastern Australia. CSIRO Publishing, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1071/9781486306121.

Full text
Abstract:
Indigenous Australians have long understood sustainable hunting and harvesting, seasonal changes in flora and fauna, predator–prey relationships and imbalances, and seasonal fire management. Yet the extent of their knowledge and expertise has been largely unknown and underappreciated by non-Aboriginal colonists, especially in the south-east of Australia where Aboriginal culture was severely fractured. Aboriginal Biocultural Knowledge in South-eastern Australia is the first book to examine historical records from early colonists who interacted with south-eastern Australian Aboriginal communities and documented their understanding of the environment, natural resources such as water and plant and animal foods, medicine and other aspects of their material world. This book provides a compelling case for the importance of understanding Indigenous knowledge, to inform discussions around climate change, biodiversity, resource management, health and education. It will be a valuable reference for natural resource management agencies, academics in Indigenous studies and anyone interested in Aboriginal culture and knowledge.

Moyal, Ann. Koala. CSIRO Publishing, 2008. http://dx.doi.org/10.1071/9780643096226.

Full text
Abstract:
The koala is both an Australian icon and an animal that has attained ‘flagship’ status around the world. Yet its history tells a different story. While the koala figured prominently in Aboriginal Dreaming and Creation stories, its presence was not recorded in Australia until 15 years after white settlement. Then it would figure as a scientific oddity, despatched to museums in Britain and Europe, a native animal driven increasingly from its habitat by tree felling and human settlement, and a subject of relentless hunting by trappers for its valuable fur. It was not until the late 1920s that slowly emerging protective legislation and the enterprise of private protectors came to its aid. This book surveys the koala’s fascinating history, its evolutionary survival in Australia for over 30 million years, its strikingly adaptive physiognomy, its private life, and the strong cultural impact it has had through its rich fertilisation of Australian literature. The work also focuses on the complex problems of Australia’s national wildlife and conservation policies and the challenges surrounding the environmental, economic and social questions concerning koala management. Koala embraces the story of this famous marsupial in an engaging historical narrative, extensively illustrated from widely sourced pictorial material.

Rivett, DE, CW Ward, LM Belkin, JAM Ramshaw, and JFK Wilshire. Lennox Legacy. CSIRO Publishing, 1996. http://dx.doi.org/10.1071/9780643105072.

Full text
Abstract:
The Lennox Legacy: The history of the CSIRO Laboratory at 343 Royal Parade Parkville records many of the events and incidents associated with the genesis and development of the Division of Protein Chemistry over a period of more than fifty years. This book has been titled in honour of Dr Francis Gordon Lennox, the Laboratory's founder and a man who believed that science has an important part to play in bettering the well-being of all Australians. His vision, over the years, of the critical importance of protein chemistry to Australian science and industry, was central to the Laboratory's national and international achievements. The book has been written three parts: Part 1 attempts to trace the historical record of appointments and changes in research direction that have occurred in the laboratory from 1940 to the present day. Part 2 presents a more detailed description of the major scientific activities that have been carried out in the Laboratory. It reveals how fundamental studies went hand-in-hand with applied research and thereby contributed greatly to the understanding of practical problems and their possible solution. Part 3 provides a complete list of Patents and Publications arranged in decades for easy perusal. As former chief Gordon Crewther states in his foreword: "Of necessity, the story is incomplete, but because it records the stresses, exhilarations, frustrations, rewards, good fellowship, team spirit, irritations and humourous interludes arising from the research objectives of the Division and their accomplishment, there is something of interest for all present and past members of staff of CSIRO. The less technical sections, the occasional insights into/behind the scenes' activities, the glimpses of individual personalities, and the occasional reflections on science management, provides worthwhile reading for a more general audience."

Garnett, Stephen, and Donald Franklin, eds. Climate Change Adaptation Plan for Australian Birds. CSIRO Publishing, 2014. http://dx.doi.org/10.1071/9780643108035.

Full text
Abstract:
This is the first climate change adaptation plan produced for a national faunal group anywhere in the world. It outlines the nature of threats related to climate change for the Australian bird taxa most likely to be affected by climate change, and provides recommendations on what might be done to assist them and approximate costs of doing so. It also features an analysis of how climate change will affect all Australian birds, explains why some species are likely to be more exposed or sensitive to it than others, and explores the theory and practice of conservation management under the realities of a changing climate. Species profiles include maps showing current core habitat and modelled climatic suitability based on historical records, as well as maps showing projected climatic suitability in 2085 in relation to current core habitat. Climate Change Adaptation Plan for Australian Birds is an important reference for policy makers, conservation scientists, land managers, climate change adaptation biologists, as well as bird watchers and advocacy groups. 2014 Whitley Award Commendation for Zoological Management and Conservation Resource.

Australian Soil and Land Survey Field Handbook. CSIRO Publishing, 2009. http://dx.doi.org/10.1071/9780643097117.

Full text
Abstract:
The Australian Soil and Land Survey Field Handbook specifies methods and terminology for soil and land surveys. It has been widely used throughout Australia, providing one reference set of definitions for the characterisation of landform, vegetation, land surface, soil and substrate. The book advocates that a comprehensive suite of land and soil attributes be recorded in a uniform manner. This approach is more useful than the allocation of land or soil to preconceived types or classes. The third edition includes revised chapters on location and vegetation as well as some new landform elements. These updates have been guided by the National Committee on Soil and Terrain, a steering committee comprising representatives from key federal, state and territory land resource assessment agencies. Essential reading for all professionals involved in land resource surveys, this book will also be of value to students and educators in soil science, geography, ecology, agriculture, forestry, resource management, planning, landscape architecture and engineering.

Briggs, JD, and JH Leigh. Rare or Threatened Australian Plants. CSIRO Publishing, 1996. http://dx.doi.org/10.1071/9780643105270.

Full text
Abstract:
The Rare or Threatened Australian Plants (ROTAP) list and associated coding system was developed and has been maintained by CSIRO since 1979, and lists taxa that are Presumed Extinct, Endangered, Vulnerable, Rare or Poorly Known at the national level. This edition provides the most up-to-date list for conservation purposes. A significant number of endangered and Vulnerable taxa are included, which have not yet been considered for inclusion on either the Australian and New Zealand Environment and Conservation Council list or the Commonwealth's Schedule 1. This is the first ROTAP publication to include subspecies and varieties, and the list now includes 5031 taxa. There have also been at least 3270 amendments to data for listed taxa. A total of 2012 additional records of regional data for tax already listed has been included. A key factor in the development of public opinion, and the design of effective management schemes, lies in the production of accurate data to tell the story. What is threatened? Where is it found? These are two of the most fundamental questions to answer before any strategic plans can be drawn up. Obtaining such apparently simple statistics is a huge task. Rare or Threatened Australian Plants is therefore an important reference for the national status of threatened species, particularly for Rare and Poorly Known species.
