Garst, John. "The Recorded Legacy of Enrico Caruso and its Influence on the Italian Vocal Tradition." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2016. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc849763/.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation presents evidence for the influence which tenor Enrico Caruso had on the Italian Vocal Tradition. This impact was clearly boosted by the revolution realized in the fledgling recording industry, and the recordable disc. In the years of 1902-1920 gramophones became commonplace, and collecting recordings became an interest for many. This new technology required specialized skills, and was especially suited to certain qualities of voice. Caruso enjoyed immense success in this medium, in recording over 250 records. Italian vocal style at the turn of the century was changing, and Caruso employed a new "modern" style in his singing. His interpretive decisions, vocal method, and repertoire which he championed had an impact on the vocal tradition of future generations. Comparison of his recordings with tenors Fernando de Lucia, Giuseppe Anselmi, and Alessandro Bonci shows a marked contrast in styles of "the old school" and Caruso's "more straightforward" approach. A collection of historical documents for those who succeeded him include many biographies, reviews, and quotes to demonstrate the extent of his influence. Recordings also show a movement toward "the Caruso Sound." Jussi Bjoerling, Franco Corelli, Richard Tucker, Mario Lanza, and Luciano Pavarotti were all influenced by the great Caruso. Almost 100 years have passed since he sang his last performance. He continues to inspire singers to this day, through his recordings and legacy passed on by many generations. He is the ideal, the measuring stick for all tenors to follow, and continues even to today.

Cross, Edward William. "Musical timing in the Adagio from Brahms' Violin Concerto, Op. 77 : an empirical study of rubato in recorded performances dating from 1927-1973." Thesis, University of Newcastle upon Tyne, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10443/2452.

Abstract:
The inter-war period of the twentieth century represents something of a ‘golden age’ in solo violin playing. In addition to an unprecedented degree of technical prowess, a huge amount of variety existed between different performers, with the majority of well-known artists exhibiting their own unique sound and manner of delivery. One area of expression in which a divergence of approach is most evident is that of musical timing, whereby performers utilise what is generally termed ‘rubato’ in order to convey either the structure or emotional character of the music. This thesis utilises specialised computational methods of empirical analysis in order to investigate how rubato is used in thirty recordings of the Adagio from Brahms’ Violin Concerto, Op. 77, made by eminent performers who were active during this period. By comparing these recordings in detail, the principle aim is to ascertain just how much performers differ in their approaches to musical timing and, conversely, where there is some degree of common practice. Literary sources pertaining to rubato from the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries are also scrutinised, in order to determine to what extent these written descriptions of rubato relate to use of the device in real-life performances. Key stylistic traits are identified and categorised, in order to inform performers who are looking to incorporate something of this twentieth-century style of rubato into their own playing. To date, the vast majority of empirical studies of performance have been conducted in the field of music psychology, with musicological approaches tending to favour closelistening methods in order to identify key stylistic traits. This study has attempted to use both empirical analysis and close-listening in tandem, which allows for the identification of common timing patterns across all thirty recordings, as well as the detailed examination of idiosyncrasies within their respective musical contexts. Sonic Visualiser software has been used to create a number of innovative video examples that incorporate tempo graphs with the original recorded sound, in order to see and hear what is happening in the music simultaneously.

Full text
Abstract:
The current doctoral study uncovered and revived 28 autograph cantatas for Soprano and Basso Continuo composed between 1704 and 1705 by Alessandro Scarlatti (1660-1725). The studied cantatas are held in a manuscript containing 36 cantatas (one of which misses the beginning) in Yale University, Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library, James Marshall and Marie-Louise Osborn Collection, Call Number: Osborn Music MS 2. The historical context in which the cantatas were written and performed is introduced. A physical description of the manuscript follows, with the aim to assist the reader in achieving a better appreciation and understanding of these cantatas in terms of performance practice. The relation between the text and the music, and the adaptation of the rhetorical characteristics of the text into music, are two of the most salient features of this cantata collection. These features are described in great detail and their implications for the performance of the cantatas have been explored. A major contribution of this study in the field of performance practice is the production of a modern performing edition with an editorial commentary and of a recording of the 28 autograph cantatas with harpsichord accompaniment.

The Test Resource Management Center's (TRMC) Spectrum Efficient Technologies (SET) S&T program is sponsoring development of the Enhanced Query Data Recorder (EQDR), a network flight recorder that is intended to meet the future needs of the networked telemetry environment. EQDR is designed to support the "fetch" of recorded test data during a test without interrupting the ongoing recording of data from the test article vehicle network. The key benefits of the network data recorder as implemented in EQDR are increased flexibility and efficiency of test in an environment with increasing demands on spectrum available for telemetered data. EQDR enables retrieval of individual recorded parameters on an as-needed basis. Having the flexibility to send data only when it is required rather than throughout the duration of the test significantly increases the efficiency with which limited spectrum resources are used. EQDR enables parametric-level data retrieval, based not only on time interval and data source, but also on the content of the recorded data messages. EQDR enables selective, efficient retrieval of individual parameters using indexes derived from the actual values of recorded data. This paper describes the design of EQDR and the benefits of selective data storage and retrieval in the application of networked telemetry. In addition it describes the performance of the EQDR in terms of data recording and data retrieval rates when implemented on single board computers designed for use in the aeronautical test environment with size, weight, and power constraints.

Alessandri, Elena. "Evaluating recorded performance : an investigation of music criticism through Gramophone reviews of Beethoven piano sonata recordings." Thesis, Royal College of Music, 2014. http://researchonline.rcm.ac.uk/352/.

Full text
Abstract:
Critical review of performance is today one of the most common professional and commercial forms of music written response. Despite the availability of representative material and its impact on musicians' careers, there has been little structured enquiry into the way music critics make sense of their experience of performances, and no studies have to date broached the key question of how music performance is reviewed by experts. Adopting an explorative, inductive approach and a novel combination of data reduction and thematic analysis techniques, this thesis presents a systematic investigation of a vast corpus of recorded performance critical reviews. First, reviews of Beethoven's piano sonata recordings (N = 845) published in the Gramophone (1923-2010) were collected and metadata and word-stem patterns were analysed (Chapters 3 and 4) to offer insights on repertoire, pianists and critics involved and to produce a representative selection (n = 100) of reviews suitable for subsequent thematic analyses. Inductive thematic analyses, including a key-word-in-context analysis on 'expression' (Chapter 5), were then used to identify performance features (primary and supervenient) and extra-performance elements critics discuss, as well as reasons they use to support their value judgements. This led to a novel descriptive model of critical review of recorded performance (Chapters 6, 7, and 8). The model captures four critical activities - evaluation, descriptive judgement, factual information and meta-criticism - and seven basic evaluation criteria on the aesthetic and achievement-related value of performance reliably used by critics, plus two recording-specific criteria: live-performance impact and collectability. Critical review emerges as a highly dense form of writing, rich in information and open to diverse analytical approaches. Insights gained throughout the thesis inform current discourses in philosophy of art and open new perspectives for empirical music research. They emphasise the importance of the comparative element in performance evaluation, the complexity and potentially misleading nature of the notion of 'expression' in the musical discourse, and the role of critics as filters of choice in the recording market. Foremost, they further our understanding of the nature of music performance criticism as a form of reasoned evaluation that is complex, contextual and listener specific.

Bowman, Peter. "Microtonality and the recorder 1961-2013 : repertoire, tone colour, and performance." Thesis, Canterbury Christ Church University, 2014. http://create.canterbury.ac.uk/15736/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigates the development of the recorder's microtonal repertoire from 1961 through to 2013. The artistic impulses for the use of microtones are discussed and selected pieces studied and performed. An investigation is also undertaken into the relationship between pitch, dynamic, and tone colour. This leads to the development of a method for objectively identifying the changes in tone colour that result from using various microtonal fingerings. Very little substantial research has been undertaken into the recorder's contemporary repertoire, and even less so with regard to its engagement with microtones. The skills for producing the expressive effects of dynamic and tone colour, and thus microtones, were known in the early 16th century, lost, and then revived during the period of musical experimentation in post-war Europe. The application of this knowledge, however, has remained limited. This thesis addresses these shortcomings. Following consideration of intonation and interpretation in Chapter 2 a survey of writings analyzing changes in tone colour and dynamic, and the relationship between them, is undertaken in Chapter 3. These include a number of foreign language texts, whilst others appear in American journals, or conference papers not generally available to the British reader. They highlight the tendency for writers to discuss tone colour and dynamic in vague and subjective terms, and in relation to the performance of early music but rarely in the context of contemporary music. This strand of my inquiry is brought to fruition in Chapter 5, where research leading to the development of a method for identifying and quantifying changes in tone colour, through the application of different fingerings, is applied for the first time. The results of an investigation into the evolution of microtonal repertoire composed since the 1960s are recorded in Chapter 4. Different compositional approaches to both instrument and microtonality are reflected in my choice of seven pieces, plus my own composition, that are the subject of detailed study in Chapter 6. The analyses of the pieces discussed in this thesis, and the contexts in which they were composed, represent a significant step forward in the understanding of the instrument and the use of microtones in compositions of the period. My thesis concludes with a live performance in which a selection of microtonal pieces is presented. This serves as a demonstration and confirmation of the principles discussed in this thesis, drawing together the threads of my research, and applying the insights gained in the course of this study.

Abstract:
Computational cloud computing is more important than ever. Since time is literally money on cloud platforms, performance is the primary focus of researchers and programmers alike. Although distributed computing platforms today do a fine job of optimizing most types of workflows, there are some types, specifically those which are not computation-oriented, that are left out. After introducing important players in the world of computational cloud computing, this paper explores a possible performance enhancement for these types of workflows by reducing the overhead that platform designers assumed was acceptable. The enhancement is tested in two environments: an actual distributed computing platform and an environment that simulates that platform. Along the way it becomes clear that computational cloud computing is far from perfect and its use can often deliver surprising results. Regardless, the presented solution remains viable and is capable of increasing the performance of particular types of jobs by up to twenty percent.

Full text
Abstract:
A Standardized Patient (SP) is a trained actor who portrays a particular illness to provide training to medical students and professionals. SPs primarily use written scripts and additional paper-based training for preparation of practical and board exams. Many institutions use various methods for training such as hiring preceptors for reenactment of scenarios, viewing archived videos, and computer based training. Currently, the training that is available can be enhanced to improve the level of quality of standardized patients. The following research is examining current processes in standardized patient training and investigating new methods for clinical skills education in SPs. The modality that is selected for training can possibly affect the performance of the actual SP case. This paper explains the results of a study that investigates if there is a difference in the results of an SP performance assessment. This difference can be seen when comparing a virtual human modality to that of a pre-recorded human modality for standardized patient training. The sample population navigates through an interactive computer based training module which provides informational content on what the roles of an SP are, training objectives, a practice session, and an interactive performance assessment with a simulated Virtual Human medical student. Half of the subjects interact with an animated virtual human medical student while the other half interacts with a pre-recorded human. The interactions from this assessment are audio-recorded, transcribed, and then graded to see how the two modalities compare. If the performance when using virtual humans for standardized patients is equal to or superior to pre-recorded humans, this can be utilized as a part task trainer that brings standardized patients to a higher level of effectiveness and standardization.; In addition, if executed properly, this tool could potentially be used as a part task trainer which could provide savings in training time, resources, budget, and staff to military and civilian healthcare facilities.

Digital-based linear-array chart recorders are replacing conventional stylus recorders in telemetry data stations everywhere. They offer advantages in virtually all respects, and are becoming indispensable. But because of the completely different writing method and technology employed, it is difficult to make completely analogous performance comparisons between analog and digital chart recorders. This has led to some confusion when replacing aging stylus recorders is contemplated. Objectives: Establish a set of universal, standardized performance characteristics for digital chart recorders. Introduce appropriate terminology, allowing valid, repeatable comparison of old and new systems.

Abstract:
The purposes of this study were to analyze the set of choral arrangements elaborated by the conductor Samuel Kerr and establish possible connections between his production and his artistic career. Thereunto, we presented a biographical text originated from bibliographic research, and we realized that an interview with the conductor was needed to raise his background which led to his choral writing. Afterwards, we listed and exemplified the fourteen procedures recurrently found during the process analysis of a set of one hundred and ninety nine arrangements. At last, we choose five representatives arrangements from the set for a further detailed analysis, performed by Silva Ramos Benchmark, process that allowed us to understand clearly the application of the procedures. Throughout the dissertation we pursue to relate the quantification of the application of procedures writing to creative thinking and pedagogical research that we have identified in the research and we have evidenced in most analyzes.

Abstract:
This thesis is the result of practice-based research concerning the analysis and performance of solo recorder repertoire composed during the 1990s. Its purpose is to demonstrate that recorder music can support critical scrutiny, and that knowledge gained from analysis can develop a deeper understanding of the rational and empirical aspects of both structure and content, leading to compelling performances governed by, and reflecting, informed choices. This work includes a catalogue of solo pieces for the recorder composed during the 1990s, totalling 326 items, from which five have been selected for detailed analysis and performance. They are by: Peter Crossley-Holland; Calliope Tsoupaki; Donald Bousted; Gerhard Braun, and Maki Ishii. These pieces have been contextualised with reference to some of the important aesthetic concepts prevalent in the 1990s, particularly those regarding conservative and progressive ideas. Three methods of analysis have been used for the repertoire in focus: structural, paradigmatic, and parametric, leading to an understanding of the compositional process at both macro and micro levels. The repertoire demands a vast range of instrumental techniques, many rediscovered from historical treatises as much as from avant-garde style experimentation, including microtones, percussive, and vocalized sounds, providing a serious challenge to both the performer and the instrument. Each is discussed within the context of the selected pieces. The effects of globalisation at the end of the twentieth century are evidenced in the selected composers' use of ideas from many cultures, including historical references to early Western music, as well as to those of Japan and Indonesia. Specific references are made to Derrida and 'différance', and the influence of the Japanese aesthetic and structural principles of 'wabi sabi' and 'jo ha kyū'.

Abstract:
The dissertation deals with the effects of leadership, LMX and transformational leadership on the various organisational and business performance of enterprises in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Of business performance, key financial and success of new product development performance are considered to be key, while as organisational performance we consider: job satisfaction, organisational commitment, organisational communication and mutual trust at work. In addition, the dissertation also explains other organisational outcomes that are in a cause-and-effect relationship with leadership: organisational behaviour, organisational culture, motivation and stress. The research part of the dissertation is based on data obtained from two simultaneously conducted research. The first survey included a survey of N = 334 mid-level managers from 103 enterprises in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The statistical methods used are: descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, regression analysis and hierarchical regression analysis for moderate effect testing. The basic conclusions of this research are: (1) Leaders in Bosnia and Herzegovina have high expectations in terms of performance, with little support and feelings for employees. The penalties are more frequent than the rewards, the LMX is around the average, the distance of power above the average, and the organisation's commitment has a low average grade. (2) Employees in Bosnia and Herzegovina do not like a great distance of power, preferring good interpersonal relationships, both with their superiors and their counterparts. In addition, employees highly value and reward strategic abilities of leaders. Insistence of leaders on high-performance, as well as the application of the punishment system, do not yield positive effects. (3) Job satisfaction, satisfaction with organisational communication and mutual trust in work are around the average. Employees are more satisfied with aspects of work related to social relations in the companythan the existing and potential benefits. Generally speaking, they are happy with organisational communication, especially with middle-level managers, and mutual trust is more intense when it comes to the intentions and actions of colleagues than the intentions and actions of enterprise management. (4) Ownership structure and national origin of enterprises are not significant moderators of observed relationships. The moderate effect has only been demonstrated in a small number of cases. (5) Leaders should reduce the distance of power, reduce high performance expectations, reduce punishment, improve their relationship with employees, nurture good relations among employees, increase rewards, and improve their strategic knowledge, thinking and action. Also, in order for the dissertation to provide comprehensive information on the effects of leadership on organisational and business performance of enterprises in Bosnia and Herzegovina, in addition to the aforementioned research of mid-level managers, an additional parallel study was carried out on a sample of 127 top managers in the same companies, on the principle of one company one top manager. Bearing in mind the fact that modern business imposes on leaders the need to create and permanently introduce changes to existing business practises, which in essence represents transformational leadership, this research was intended to determine the scope and intensity of the transformation leadership effects of top managers on business performance of enterprises in Bosnia and Herzegovina. We consider financial performance and performance of new product development as business performance. The results of this research show that transformational leadership has a positive influence on achieving a high level of financial performance and the performance of developing a new product. Also, research has shown that leaders and top managers of the highest level in enterprises in Bosnia and Herzegovina have a greater focus on tasks than on people. In this regard, the recommendation to them is to pay more attention to the design and implementation of changes in the existing business model, the future and long-term plans, but also to its employees as the main carriers of all business processes.

Abstract:
The present research traces the recorder learning process in a group of seventeen people, between the ages of nine and thirteen, which participate in an extension program held by a public school in Porto Alegre city. This research aims to understand how musicality is developed, based on the concept that this is a human characteristic, constituted by the capacity of creating musical meaning through expressive performance. The methodology applied has a qualitative approach. A group case study was made through class observation and collective recorder presentations. Semi-structured interviews were conducted as a complementary procedure. Data collection occurred between September 2007 and August 2008 by a total of 16 meetings registered in a field diary and in audio files. The observation of indicators such as sonority, musical phrasing, instrumental fluency and musical interaction optimized the analysis and interpretation of the results. The development of musicality in these seventeen people was characterized by the dynamic process of gradual acquisition of musical knowledge and ability, which promotes, at every progress, a new know-how wholeness that favors performance expressivity. The results demonstrated that: repertoire; practice and study; sociocultural context; access to technique, composition, improvisation, and musical reading; and the occurrence of musical presentations are factors that influence musicality development.

Abstract: The present work is divided into three parts. The first is a critical exposition of the formation of the music performer, forged in the methodology of the Conservatory after the French Revolution and settled in Romanticism. Here it will be compare this "mentality" to the notion of "disciplinary society", "society of docile bodies", developed by Michel Foucault (2007), as the structure of musical training, giving rise to an "transparent" interpretation (HAYNES, 2007), called here "neutral interpretation". The axis of this training focuses on the musical text as an absolute value, the authorship of the text and the decoding logic abstraction made by the neutral interpreter, through an automated technical training. The second part will consider the Historically Informed Performance of music (HIP) and at the same time, the contact of performers with interpretation of compositions of contemporary authors containing instable contours, the main factors that deviated the musician from "canonical" interpretation settled in Romanticism and consolidated today. Both factors led the musical performer to shift the axis of 'textcentrical' interpretation, in which the performer took the post of "Ambassador of the will of the author" (DUNSBY, 1995) and musicology assumed the function of regulatory performance. Without detriment to the musical text (whether written or oral transmission), this displacement drives the notion of performance as an operation of perceptual order, not logical, which occur in the space of performance, at the moment of performance, whose axis is the interpreter and audience. In the third part of this study aims primarily to intensify the experience of the performer through the concept of 'mouvence' of the text, a term coined by medievalist Paul Zumthor (1993), facing the 'intervocalicality' which structures the texts of the Middle Ages, showing mobility and 'flexible edges' of the text. It is proposed to apply the concept of 'mouvence' for reading / interpretation of any text. Starting from the awareness of the mobility of the text, in the present work it will be considered the opening of a dialogue, by the musical performer, with other performing arts, contemporary theater and contemporary dance. It is suggested that the finding of common denominators between these arts - especially the meeting with the fundamental concepts in the theater of Jerzy Grotowski, the Theater Anthropology of Eugenio Barba and the KlaussVianna Technique of "Body Hearing." This dialogue will propose that the structure of the performer, for musical perceptive performance, should be based on the inclusion of the concepts developed in Grotowski and Barba's theater and in the principles of the KlaussVianna Technique as: drive the attention of the body through deautomatization of everyday body and the consequent generation of dilation of the body and the presence of the body in the musical Act. It will be exposed the author's experience as recorder player together with Grupo ANIMA, as a synthesis of the proposals brought in this theses, that conduce to a lively musical Act through the living presence of the musician and its body in communion with the audience

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to develop, implement and test a tool designed to help transient students gain the basic musical knowledge and skills needed to successfully complete a fourth-grade unit of recorder study. The project resulted in the development of a hypermedia-based application. The seven-week study consisted of 49 fourth-grade students. Students were given pitch reading and rhythm pattern identification pre-tests and post-tests. Students participated in weekly tests and tutorial sessions via the hypermedia-based application. At the conclusion of the study, the students were given post-tests and a performance test. The pre-test and post-test scores for the transient and established populations were analyzed. A t-test analysis revealed a significant improvement in the scores of the established and transient populations. It appears that the hyper-media application may be an effective tutorial for transient students.

Abstract:
The main goal of this doctoral dissertation is to determine the directions and intensities of two groups of effects: knowledge management (KM) on employee job satisfaction (JS) and enterprise financial performance (FP). In addition, the impact of individual control variables (national origin of the enterprise, ownership structure, the size of the enterprise, and the financial performance of the enterprise) on the dimensions of knowledge management (KM) is presented. Also the effects of the defined moderating relations (gender, age, type of job and level of education of respondents) on the relations of KM to JS are analyzed. The research was conducted via survey, on a sample of N = 520 respondents (managers of all levels) from manufacturing enterprises in Serbia. Statistical data analysis was conducted with the IBM SPSS Statistics 21 software. The following statistical methods were used: descriptive statistics, t-test, correlation analysis, regression analysis, analysis of variance (ANOVA) and hierarchical regression analysis for analysis of moderator actions. Two groups of influences were observed: knowledge management on employee job satisfaction and knowledge management on enterprise financial performance. During the analysis of these relations, significant differences were noticed. The impact of knowledge management on financial performance is clear and unambiguous: statistically significant and positive. However, the impact of knowledge management on employee job satisfaction is much more complex: it is mostly statistically significant and negative, but it also has statistically significant and positive impacts. The main limitation of the research is the fact that the research results refer to countries with specific transition conditions of the economy, and to the presence of the psychological attitude of people, which is specific in such conditions. On the other hand, it must be noted that a significant research sample included foreign companies operating in Serbia, which may imply the universality of the results. Given that the transition conditions are changing, it would be important to monitor these changes and in accordance with them set new studies and compare the results and accordingly make recommendations for further research and business improvement.

Abstract:
International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / November 04-07, 1991 / Riviera Hotel and Convention Center, Las Vegas, Nevada
Chart recorders are needed both for producing a permanent record for post-mission analysis and for providing real-time information during a test. Immediate feedback is important when test conditions may require mid-course warnings or corrections. In the traditional galvanometer based chart recorder, the operator can look directly at the pens moving on the paper and quickly judge speed and amplitude. When using a thermal array recorder, there is a small delay between the time of printing and the time when the trace is visible. This is due to the construction of the thermal array itself. Individual printing elements are deposited on a ceramic substrate which eliminates all motion from the printing process and physically blocks the operator’s view of the printhead so that for a short time there are no visual clues as to the exact waveform position. At higher chart speed this gap only represents milliseconds of elapsed time, well below human reaction time, and therefore of no real importance. At trending speeds, however, the delay could be half a second or even more and could be a problem in some situations. The first solution offered by manufacturers of thermal array recorders was a row of LED’s that stretched across the recorder directly over the printheads and reflected printing activity in real-time and indicated the actual position of the individual waveform traces. This was found to be a satisfactory solution by most telemetrists who wanted to change to the new technology in order to take advantage of the thermal array recorder’s higher frequency response and flexible formats. While the LED array satisfies basic real-time response requirements, there are many other applications for auxiliary displays which include variable chart labeling and graphic display of waveforms.

The original works of copyright holders included tangible creations, as music written on a page, thereby, extending copyright protection to songwriters and music publishers. Until 1995, absent from U.S. copyright law was protection for copyright owners of intangible sound recordings. the Performance Rights Act (PRA) seeks to amend the US copyright law in order to grant copyright holders of sound recordings the right to performance royalties from terrestrial broadcast radio. If passed, the legislation would be unprecedented in the United States. the PRA has implications for broadcast radio, record labels, and performing artists. This study includes historical and legal perspective of previous attempts at legislation of this nature and predicts outcomes of current legislation.

Abstract:
María Grever (1885-1951) overcame racism and gender bias during a pivotal era in American music history to become the first commercially successful Mexican female composer and more specifically, a pioneer of popular music during the first half of the 20th century. Though named the "Madonna of song," her legacy is largely overshadowed by other compositional giants of the era, such as the Gershwin brothers, Cole Porter, and Irving Berlin. Grever's music is sophisticated, heartfelt, and worthy of attention. Her colorful, genuine music adds distinctiveness and variety to recital programs. Grever's songs offer a high level of musical integrity and socio-cultural value. Incorporating her compositions into a singer's vocal repertoire is an excellent way to broaden the scope of styles and languages while maintaining the highest standards of musical study. The following document considers the importance of performing and studying Grever's music by analyzing nine songs representing three compositional periods. I evaluated the songs considering pedagogical benefit, performance value, and significance to her overall oeuvre.

Abstract:
Falls are the second leading cause of accidental or unintentional injury deaths worldwide. Many factors contribute to an increased risk of falling, such as age, disease state, and medication use. The purpose of the current investigation was to compare an electronic medical record (EMR) fall risk calculator, the theoretical Timed Up and Go (T-TUG), which utilizes gender, age, BMI, and prescription and OTC drug counts as variables, to other established performance- and paper-based assessments of fall risk. The National Social Life, Health, and Aging Project (NSHAP) Database was used to develop the T-TUG. Data was analyzed from participants in Wave 1 of the Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing (TILDA) to validate the T-TUG. Performance-based assessments included mean grip force for both dominant and nondominant hands, Timed Up and Go (TUG), and a paper-based assessment titled the Steadiness Index. The latter is a series of 3 questions assessing steadiness when walking, standing, or getting up from a chair. Those participants of the TILDA cohort passing the inclusion criteria were divided into those who reported a fall in the previous year (N=1159) and those reporting no falls (N=4746). Two group comparisons were analyzed by Mann-Whitney U Test (p<0.05) and a Receiver Operator Characteristics (ROC) curve analysis was used to detect separation of fall and non-fall groups. For the Mann-Whitney U test the fall and no fall groups were statistically different for the T-TUG (p<0.001), TUG (p<0.001), dominant and nondominant grip forces (p<0.001), and the steadiness index (p< 0.001). In the fall group, the grip forces were weaker, T-TUG and TUG time longer, and the steadiness index scores lower. For the grip force assessments and steadiness index, lower scores are more likely to be associated with a higher fall risk. In the T-TUG and TUG, longer times are more likely to be associated with a higher fall risk. In the ROC curve analyses, the T-TUG (0.567, p<0.001) demonstrated similar outcomes compared to dominant (AUC=547, p<0.09) and non-dominant (AUC=0.550, p<0.01) grip forces, and the TUG (AUC=0.558, p<0.001). The steadiness index ROC analysis was slightly better than the T-TUG (AUC=0.579, p<0.001). Sensitivity (52-58%) and specificity (50-57%) ranges were equivalent for all performance-based assessments, whereas for the Steadiness Index, the sensitivity (40%) was lower than the specificity (75%). The EMR fall-risk calculator (T-TUG) is a valid triage tool to estimate fall risk in older community dwellers. The EMR calculator has the potential for real-time assessment of patients using current data compared to other performance- and paper-based assessments, which would allow the healthcare team to spend more time with higher fall risk patients.

Thomas, Holly Ellen. "Applying the linear concept of contemporary drumming: a portfolio of recorded performances and exegesis." Thesis, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/2440/85973.

Full text
Abstract:
This submission for the degree of MPhil in Musical Performance at the Elder Conservatorium of Music, University of Adelaide, is the outcome of a performance-based research project that aims to identify, explore and apply the Linear Concept of contemporary drumming. The investigative approach has been one of analysis followed by synthesis. The initial stage had a focus on aural analysis of existing sound recordings. The creative synthesis was achieved through new performances, in a contemporary jazz setting. The significance of the project is in the creation of performances that develop this interesting but hitherto underdeveloped rhythmic principle. The direct outcomes are presented through the medium of two, 60-minute audio-visual DVD recordings, supported by an explanatory 5,000-word exegesis.

Rickard-Ford, Paul. "Portfolio of recorded performances and exegesis: the late piano works of Robert Schumann." Thesis, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/2440/63083.

Full text
Abstract:
This doctoral submission consists of 4 CD recordings of my performances of Schumann’s piano works (from Opus 72 to the last piece he composed) supported by an exegesis. The works performed and discussed are: Vier Fugen Op. 72 (1845), Vier Märsche Op. 76 (1849), Waldszenen Op. 82 (1848/9), Bunte Blätter Op. 99 (1836-49), Albumblätter Op. 124 (1832-45), Drei Fantasiestücke Op. 111 (1851), Drei Klavier-Sonaten für die Jugend Op. 118 (1853), Sieben Stücke in Fughettenform Op. 126 (1853), Gesänge der Frühe Op. 133 (1853), and the Geistervariationen WoO 24 (1854). Recent scholarship suggests that Schumann’s late piano works have been unreasonably neglected. This neglect has been justified by reference to his mental condition, which has often been assumed to have deteriorated as he got older, allegedly affecting the quality of his composition. Empirical evidence from the 1980s onwards supports a burgeoning school of thought that casts misgivings on the once commonly held belief that Schumann’s late works are inferior in quality. These recordings provide a fresh interpretation of the material and are intended to contribute towards a 21st century Schumannian renaissance as we approach the 200th anniversary of his birth in 2010. The exegesis discusses the process of researching, learning, performing and recording these works. Interpretative decisions are described and validated through an examination of the implications of the score, and specific pianistic issues arising through the maturation of Schumann’s late style are also discussed. The works have been examined on the basis that historical prejudice may have prevented a fair assessment of the quality of the composer’s music of this period.
