Full textProfessional investors advertise some of their investment ideas to other investors at investment conferences, on social media, or on their own website. In doing so, they disseminate various arguments and estimates to support their stock recommendations. In this thesis, I document the nature of professional investors’ equity research and examine the economic implications by particularly focusing on the unique role of target prices. In the first essay, I study whether the stock ownership of fund managers improves or impairs the informativeness of their equity research disclosed at investment conferences. Overall, I find that fund managers’ ownership improves the informativeness of their equity research. However, as fund managers’ incentives are uncertain and they sometimes trade against their own stock recommendations and target prices, investors learn and discount their equity research. In the second and third essays, I restrict my analysis to equity research disclosed by activist short sellers. In the second essay, I examine activist short sellers’ target prices and find that they are pessimistically biased, but informative, as they predict future returns in various windows. Target prices are informative, as activist short sellers have reputation concerns and target prices are summary statistics of their investment theses. Finally, I find that including target prices accelerates price discovery, that activist short sellers exhibit differential abilities to forecast stock prices, and that retail investors seem not to understand the informativeness of activist short sellers’ target prices. In the third essay, I investigate how earnings announcements are critical events for activist short sellers and attacked firms. On the one hand, I find that activist short sellers use investors’ fixation on earnings and increase their Twitter activity at earnings announcements. On the other hand, I provide evidence that attacked firms manage earnings to deter short sellers from disclosing allegations and reclaim the control of the investment narrative surrounding their stock

Full textWith the arrival and development of digital banks, retail banks, and in particular private banks, must evolve, adapt, to retain and attract new customers. To do so, they must develop operational strategies that can meet these challenges, while ensuring and even increasing their competitiveness. In this context, quality of service seems to be an essential key factor for success and sustainability. For private banks, this is even a key differentiating factor in the face of a demanding clientele eager for advice. From a literature view, several studies have shown that service is one of the ways to achieve customer satisfaction, customer loyalty and positive word of mouth. Thus, focusing on customer retention and attracting new customers is a winning strategy to generate profits. The purpose of this research is to identify the factors that increase the referral rate of clients in the context of private banking and thus offer managers tools to increase referral rates. From a literature review, the dimensions of quality of service are identified, in order to pinpoint the most important aspects for customer satisfaction. The selected methodology begins with a case study in the exploratory phase, then continues with a quantitative study with clients. To test the conceptual model, the recommendation, satisfaction and perceived quality of the service are measured. Constituting reflective constructs, their operationalization is carried out by a questionnaire. The perceived quality of banking service is assessed in terms of its tangibility, reliability, reactivity, assurance and empathy of staff. A quantitative survey is conducted of a sample of private bank clients. Model validation by structural equations highlights the relationship and influence of service quality on dependent variables, perceived value, satisfaction and recommendation. The dimensions of Responsiveness, Assurance, and Empathy contribute most to the importance of quality of service. Following these results and the exploratory study, actions are proposed that constitute managerial contributions to improve the Net Promoter Score

Full textThe management of patients with severe mental illnesses needs a better understanding of thefactors affecting the behaviours of clinicians and patients toward therapeutic strategies. The main objective of this thesis was to assess and identify the role of the clinician’s attitudes and patients’ attitudes toward the medication use behaviour. We conducted several studies to address this point in different mental disorders and for different type of treatment. Concerning the patients ‘attitudes toward treatment, we reported data from a study assessing the beliefs toward antipsychotics of schizophrenic patients and from a qualitative study assessing the patient’s attitudes toward the management of bipolar disorder in euthymic periods. We showed that the negative attitudes had a marked impact on the level of adherence of patients and could determine individual targets of interventions to improve them. Concerning the psychiatrists, we reported two studies assessing the clinician’s attitudes toward guidelines and long-acting injectable antipsychotics. Some specific attitudes were associated with a lower use of guidelines or long-acting formulations. These findings showed that the adherence of patient to treatment and the medical decisions of clinicians were related to their attitudes. The assessment of attitudes or beliefs in the field of mental health appears to be an essential step to promote a better comprehension of some treatment use behaviours. Our results and from other recent studies support a new paradigm for the patient adherence to treatment and the medical decision of clinicians focused on their attitudes as predicting variables
