With mirror neurons and simulation theories, recent findings in neuroscience on inter-subjective relations offer new data to literary theory about fictional narrative. They help restore literary bovarysm of which cognitive version, the fictional empathy, is the subject of this thesis. It appears that, in a world created by fiction, the fictional empathy that the reader feels for characters allows him to understand their mental states and anticipate their behavior. Thus, the fictional emotions, real catalyst of the simulation process that allows the reader to physically experience the perspective of the character, fully participate in the process of understanding and interpreting the story. The objective is therefore to rethink the mental activity of the reader of fiction, with a focus on how the reader grasps the fictional world and gets involved emotionally. The capacity for fictional empathy then becomes a reader’s skill, essential to immerse himself in the fictional universe. This approach raises a question about the teaching of literary reading. When reading fiction, in which way and how is it advisable to seek the students’ fictional empathy for the characters? To address this issue, this thesis proposes that a reading-cum-writing support mechanism be envisaged: the "character’s diary". The experiment conducted in CM2 and 6th grade classes, relates to the diary of Gilgamesh, mythological hero whose adventure stories belong to our founding texts. Through the observation of students' written along with the analysis of interviews and individual questionnaires, it would appear that fictional writing requested from students in the first person are a means to exercise their capacity for fictional empathy and as a corollary develop their skills in literary reading

The so-called “Moorish novel” was born in 16th and 17th-centuries Spain. It includes four main works: the anonymous Historia del Abencerraje y la Hermosa Jarifa, the two parts of Guerras Civiles de Granada by Ginés Pérez de Hita, the “Historia de los dos enamorados Ozmín y Daraja” by Mateo Alemán, and the episodes involving Ruy Pérez, Zoraida, Ricote and Ana Félix in Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes. These texts stage peaceful relationships between Moors or moriscos and Christians, which arouse a lot of interrogations: what is the meaning of this idealized (asepticised, maybe?) representation of relationships between members of different religious communities at a time when discriminations towards the morisca community are increasing, and will soon lead tothe drastic decision of the expulsion in 1609? We intend to study the representation of the morisco Other in these works: the authors reutilise and question discourses and images linked with the morisca community. Thus they include their texts in the contemporary polemic. By doing so, they have to question every literary convention, especially the intercalation or narrative embedding. These poetic considerations allow them to embody an incontestable modernity in literature

Our dissertation focuses on a two-part literary corpus. The first group contains four novels dedicated to the wars of the collapse of Yugoslavia in the 1990s. Created either by French journalists or by exiles from the former Yugoslavia, these texts include: Jean Hatzfeld’s Robert Mitchum ne revient pas (2013), Étienne de Montety’s La route du salut (2013), Saša Stanišić’s Le soldat et le gramophone (2008) (original title: Wie der Soldat das Grammofon repariert) and Dubravka Ugrešić’s Le ministère de la douleur (2008) (Ministarstvo boli). For its part, the second group consists of five literary works on the massacres of the Rwandan genocide which took place in 1994. Produced by African, French or Belgian writers, these include: Tierno Monenembo’s L’aîné des orphelins (2000), A. Waberi’s Moisson de crânes: textes pour le Rwanda (2000), Boubacar Boris Diop’s Murambi: le livre des ossements (2000), Véronique Tadjo’s L’ombre d’Imana: voyages jusqu’au bout du Rwanda (2000) and Huguette de Broqueville’s Uraho? Es-tu toujours vivant (1997). It seems there is no justification for linking the context of the wars in the former Yugoslavia with the events of Rwanda. Additionally, in both cases the writers who have sought to bear witness to these conflict with their pen all come from very different backgrounds. But whether knowingly or unknowingly, all of them did seize a central issue of these recent conflicts, beyond the horror of what happened: their ambivalent nature, the fact they reflect heterogeneous, uncertain and sometimes contradictory realities. While resorting to a kind of History that is closely interwoven with a porous present time, the authors have thus imagined some forms of ‘exteriority’ that play on these possible variations, bringing them into existence. They created literary scenes that are at odds with the events of the war or the genocide they refer to. For example, Hatzfeld raises in his book Robert Mitchum ne revient pas the issue of a sports competition taking place in the midst of the siege of Sarajevo. Through the Olympic paradigm, a supranational space arises. It conflicts with the national logic of war in Bosnia. In this way, the face of war changes. By using the tools of rhetoric and their application to fictional narrative, we propose to question the implications of these narrative shifts away from the conflicts reality, whether in its political, media, cultural or even economic relevance (as it happens with Ugrešić). If most of the writers want to fight what these violent realities involve, we shall see that the literary answers they bring have sometimes a contradictory nature. Indeed, they can revive the same logical patterns that they criticize elsewhere. Despite everything, these narratives help us better understand the place occupied by fiction in our societies, whether the authors choose to focus on utopia or demystification. Basically, it is always about changing the dispositions of an otherwise essentially fictional reality. Thus, it may be possible to escape the return of the same, a continuous collapse of which we are all witnesses.
Electronic Thesis or Diss., Paris 8, 2020. http://www.theses.fr/2020PA080034.
Between the early 2000s and the early 2010s, four contemporary Western artists Christoph Büchel, Mike Nelson, Jonah Freeman and Justin Lowe built gigantic and enigmatic multi-room installations in Europe and the United States. Our initial hypothesis was that there were relationships between the labyrinthine super-productions of these artists, both in terms of their conceptions and their receptions. Our study describes and analyzes the specificities (construction, visitors reception, themes and references ...) and the issues (exploration, elaboration of a story, visitors’ endangerment and risk-taking...) of the aesthetic experiences offered by these works of art, nowadays invisible. The gathering and assessment of unpublished archives concerning ten of these artistic devices and their geneses as well as a field survey carried out among their spectators have enabled us to reconstruct mental images of these works. The plans and ekphrases, illustrated fictions, presented in this thesis reveal the spatial and temporal dimensions of these aesthetic walkthroughs and bring to light a set of similar set ups, materials, and themes. Based upon the scenographic strategies of the artists and the feelings of the spectators, our analysis leads us to consider these works as emotional installations and as dystopian narrative spaces. Walking across these, as if journeying through a voyage of initiation, sparks the spectator’s imagination and makes him fully conscious of his individuality and ability to take action

The present study offers a guide line to enter the complex and profuse work of Peter Greenaway. It focuses on his fictional features, from " the Draughtsman's contract " (1982) to " the Pillow Book " (1996). We try to demonstrate that Greenaway's films are structured by an inherent dichotomy that is conveyed by a fascination /repulsion towards reproduction. This dichotomy is illustrated by sexual reproduction which confines humans in the antagonism of the sexes as well as in the biological cycle uniting birth and death. But the notion of reproduction itself is dealt with in a dual way. The duality of sexual reproduction is counterbalanced by a monism characterising a " cerebral " reproduction, which would allow humans to escape their biological cycle, thus denying time. This mental reproduction is a constant temptation for the male characters, the more so as it corresponds to their artistic preoccupations. However, the tension established by these two modes of reproduction conditions not only the set of themes, but also the narrative structures , which respond to the dual movement of inner repetition and outer references, as well as the medium of the cinema itself, which proves to be a place of tension between the establishment of a spatial order in a fixed moment and the constant flow of film progress

This research investigates the literature of the Great War as well as Iran-Iraq war, instigators of shock and disruption, narrated by a myriad of novels and fictions which are shared between restitution and invention. It focuses on the expressive capacity of fiction to illustrate the phenomenon of war. By unraveling contexts of the comparing literatures, the major tendencies of poetic of the novel of war are established first. Then the frontline stories are studied. In the core of the action, the first movement of the texts has testimonial and realistic concern. Under fire of Barbusse is a realistic and symbolic novel, while Journey of Dehghan is more brief and documentary. Despite their differences in terms of style and axiology, both have been contributed with the same desire to demonstrate inexpressible fire and horror of war. This part of literary war novels follows the mimetic pattern of the logic of memories and expected to be legible. But the second movement of texts – written following the end of main battles - favors the fictional to factual form. Screams of Gaudé and The Scorpion of Abkénar with their post-apocalyptic perspective comprise a new kind of fiction. The staging of war - far from being accurate and verifiable - is fragmented and even lacunar with signs of bursting and incoherency. The soldier rises through wandering and nightmare. Almost based on the new image of war, the contemporary narratives challenge the possibility of depicting a complete panorama of war and denounce the vacuum it leaves behind. The novelistic fiction, however, avails itself of such vacuum to revive the aesthetics of the subject

This thesis proposes a two-fold examination of the literary writing of slavery in France and its former colonies, and in the United States, using both a diachronic and comparative approach. It also takes into account the perspective of the construction and transmission of the memory of transatlantic slavery. The diachronic dimension adopted in this work aims to enlighten on the contemporary writing of slavery. Indeed, several hundreds accounts of slaves– known as “slave narratives” – had been published in the United States, more rarely in England, as early as the 18th century, but there were no such narratives in the francophone world. This striking disparity turned out to be a case worth analyzing to find out about its causes, its origins and its consequences on both the memory and the writing of slavery. As a matter of fact, African American literature bears the direct influence of these testimonies. Identified as “neo-slave narratives”, African American novels dealing with slavery have been collected and analyzed by critics since the 1960's. The last part of this dissertation focuses on the Francophone Caribbean writing of slavery. It is examined in comparison with the African American production and the striking difference noted in the historic and discursive heritage of the slave narratives. This lack in the francophone critical field led us to prepare the ground for the analysis and the review of the contemporary Francophone Caribbean writing of slavery, and for a generic expression: francophone slave narratives
Kosch, Arlette. Thesis, Paris 4, 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017PA040022.
The ultimate goal of this work is to clarify the precise definitions of Wanderschaft and Wanderung in non-fictional writing in the German language between 1770 and 1850. Those two concepts refer to any journey, mainly done on foot, undertaken for a variety of motives, but they can also take on a metaphorical sense, primarily religious. By use of both synchronic and diachronic analysis of the lexical network, as well as with the help of a multidisciplinary approach to a variety of documents, integrating literature, linguistics, theology, historical texts, visual arts, music and journalism, it has been possible to establish, not only the polysemy of the two words, but also which functions these terms cover, by putting them into their global context. Preference has been given to non-fictional writing (accounts by travellers, correspondence, educational works). The authors of accounts of travels on foot in this period come from two distinct social classes: on one hand, the cultural elite (a composite group, just coming into being and originating mainly from the affluent bourgeoisie) and on the other hand, the Companions, ranging in different cases from the middle to the working class, suddenly given social validation by the publication of their travel notes. They all come from German-speaking countries, including parts of the Kingdom of Denmark as well as of Switzerland. The evolution of the use and functions of those two words, as well as their associative fields, mirrors that of the social, economic and cultural structures between 1770 and 1850. At the same tine, the scaling down and virtualisation of the pedestrian journey, initiated in aristocratic English-style parks, continue in urban panoramas, the rooms or the garden of grand houses, as well as in society's games. Finally, the analysis is completed by examining how the two notions are dealt with in newspapers, periodicals and almanacs, as well as in didactic literature for young people, popular songs and the visual arts

Thesis, Poitiers, 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017POIT5020.
This thesis analyses the various stages of the work of Argentinean writer Juan José Saer (Serodino 1937-Paris 2005) from a genesis map of narrative projects that exposes the preeditorial and editorial phases of all the edited works. Therefore, the chronology this study follows is not that of the editions, but that of the development phases of each project. Based on this map, we study the overlaps, continuities and disruptions between the writing processes of the projects. The common thread is the diegetic and textual space of la Zona, present in one way or another throughout the whole work of the author. This recursive space, its characters and its stories, motivate the reading of the work of Juan Jose Saer as a "whole". The study of the dynamics that define its construction also clarify the socio-historical stakes that determine its representation
