Full textThis dissertation adds to the online household behaviour on switching effect and price premium on the Internet. In particular the analysis looks at the context where households make purchase decisions for books and CD online on different retailers Web site. The approach here combines theory and data to examine how such purchase decision and choices of retailers Web site vary with different factors affecting the online business environment. Part one addresses a theoretical aspect of price dispersion, search costs, and transaction costs on the Internet and in conventional markets. In Part two, I explore two interrelated empirical research questions by using clickstream data in the online retail industry: what retains consumers to a retailer Web site? And, for any particular book/CD and based on household characteristics what make households pay for a price premium? How much is price sensitivity to any particular book/CD? Our results point to a low incidence of switching among retailers with an evidence of consumer loyalty. I also argue that some factors might affect the choice of retailer and the willingness to pay for a price premium. Each retailer can offer a homogeneous product in a sense that the same product is also available at another retailer site. I propose a random utility/discrete choice framework (McFadden 1974) and develop hypotheses about the effect purchasing economies of scope on price premium for homogeneous books/CD, as purchase appears to be driven by economies of scope in shipping costs across a diverse basket of goods. I develop hypotheses about the effect of economies of scope, household characteristics and past behaviour, and bundle characteristics (e. G. , shipping and discount) on the price premium for homogeneous products. The purpose of this research is threefold. First, I apply a discrete choice modeling framework (McFadden 1974) to study different low-cost items and not only one industry. Second, there is no empirical analysis on extending the analysis to the full basket of goods that consumers purchase. Our analysis aims to contribute to the previous empirical literature findings where amazon. Com has a price advantage over generic and brand retailers, i. E. Amazon. Com closest rivals. (i. E. , Brynjolfsson and Smith, 2001). The extant literature has sought to focus on product categories in understanding purchase loyalty rather than focusing on consumers as the unit of analysis. In directing attention at product categories we obtain only a partial picture of how consumers make purchase decisions across product categories. By ignoring the full basket of goods that consumers purchase we run the risk of erroneously inferring the absence of loyalty when consumers may be using systematic rules in making purchase decisions across the basket

Full textThis dissertation consists in three essays related to the online advertising industry. In the first essay (chapter 2), I study the targeting-through-keywords mechanism that is characteristic of search engine advertising. I show that such a mechanism improves market efficiency and intensifies competition between advertisers, which benefits consumers. However, search engines' strategic behavior introduces distortions which can be amplified by competition between search engines. In the second essay (chapter 3), I study the consequences of the privacy policy chosen by a platform. When the platform discloses information about consumers to advertisers, consumers are shown more relevant ads. However, a drawback of such a policy is that it leads advertisers to charge higher prices, since they expect to face a more elastic demand. The third essay (chapter 4) is about the question of integration between a search engine and a web publisher. Such a merger may lead to results that are biased towards the publisher that is owned by the search engine, but this bias may be more than offset by a reduction in the amount of advertising consumers are exposed to. We provide sufficient conditions for the merger to be beneficial or detrimental to consumers

Full textMore and more online environments dedicated to the dissemination of academic knowledge are integrating videos into their multimedia corpus. Compared to static or animated text or graphics, video usability has not yet been the object of scientific studies in psychology and cognitive ergonomics. Video search is part of the information seeking process. The theoretical framework of this dissertation is the Information Foraging theory (Pirolli & Card, 1999), which describes information seeking in a stochastic environment, based on a search built on intermediary information. Our main goal is to provide knowledge about users, with the initial hypothesis that a variety of video-seeking goals can coexist among users. This knowledge can help improve the usability of online environments. An exploratory study using a multi-methodological approach was carried out on the usability of an audiovisual online platform for higher education and research and on a multimedia virtual museum dedicated to the history of crime justice and punishments. The results show that: (a) the difficulties related to online video publishing directly impact video search on the user side, (b) it is relevant to distinguish the video as a media from the audiovisual document. The characteristic common to both platforms is that a majority of users use the platform as a way to educate themselves, which directly questions the interest and use of video as a vehicle of knowledge acquisition for specific purposes

The second topoi' explored is how human beings and zeug-tools (1) should be interweaved to have a good-enough production of knowledge documents. The "ideal figure" to be explored is a compound of humans and tools that would fit with the two objectives. This future oriented experiment led us to study wiiat we call "hypermodern paradigm" or best "hypermodern espisteme". The three key works for defining the way people view the world in a time after modernity and postmodernity are Michel Foucault's The order of things. , Bruno Latour's We Have Never Been Modern and Peter Sloterdijk's Spharen. Within this episteme it is possible to describe a "method for discourse production". This method is applied for the description of a practical case building a knowledge garner experiencing collaborative learning. Full textThe goal of this thesis, conducted within an industrial framework, is to pair textual media content. Specifically, the aim is to pair on-line news articles to relevant videos for which we have a textual description. The main issue is then a matter of textual analysis, no image or spoken language analysis was undertaken in the present study. The question that arises is how to compare these particular objects, the texts, and also what criteria to use in order to estimate their degree of similarity. We consider that one of these criteria is the topic similarity of their content, in other words, the fact that two documents have to deal with the same topic to form a relevant pair. This problem fall within the field of information retrieval (ir) which is the main strategy called upon in this research. Furthermore, when dealing with news content, the time dimension is of prime importance. To address this aspect, the field of topic detection and tracking (tdt) will also be explored. The pairing system developed in this thesis distinguishes different steps which complement one another. In the first step, the system uses natural language processing (nlp) methods to index both articles and videos, in order to overcome the traditionnal bag-of-words representation of texts. In the second step, two scores are calculated for an article-video pair: the first one reflects their topical similarity and is based on a vector space model; the second one expresses their proximity in time, based on an empirical function. At the end of the algorithm, a classification model learned from manually annotated document pairs is used to rank the results.Evaluation of the system's performances raised some further questions in this doctoral research. The constraints imposed both by the data and the specific need of the partner company led us to adapt the evaluation protocol traditionnal used in ir, namely the cranfield paradigm. We therefore propose an alternative solution for evaluating the system that takes all our constraints into account

Full textIn the standard setting of online computation, the input is not entirely available from the beginning, but is revealed incrementally, piece by piece, as a sequence of requests. Whenever a request arrives, the online algorithm has to make immediately irrevocable decisions to serve the request, without knowledge on the future requests. Usually, the standard framework to evaluate the performance of online algorithms is competitive analysis, which compares the worst-case performance of an online algorithm to an offline optimal solution. In this thesis, we will study some new ways of looking at online problems. First, we study the online computation in the recourse model, in which the irrevocability on online decisions is relaxed. In other words, the online algorithm is allowed to go back and change previously made decisions. More precisely, we show how to identify the trade-off between the number of re-optimization and the performance of online algorithms for the online maximum matching problem. Moreover, we study measures other than competitive analysis for evaluating the performance of online algorithms. We observe that sometimes, competitive analysis cannot distinguish the performance of different algorithms due to the worst-case nature of the competitive ratio. We demonstrate that a similar situation arises in the linear search problem. More precisely, we revisit the linear search problem and introduce a measure, which can be applied as a refinement of the competitive ratio. Last, we study the online computation in the advice model, in which the algorithm receives as input not only a sequence of requests, but also some advice on the request sequence. Specifically, we study a recent model with untrusted advice, in which the advice can be either trusted or untrusted. Assume that in the latter case, the advice can be generated from a malicious source. We show how to identify a Pareto optimal strategy for the online bidding problem in the untrusted advice model

Full textBarbuda is a small, relatively isolated, calcareous island in the northeastern West Indies. Since it is sparsely populated, it has been less affected by the large scale changes that were the result of European colonization. Therefore, it offers an exceptional opportunity to research intact prehistoric archaeological sites. This master’s thesis examines the earliest human occupation on Barbuda. During the 2011 and 2012 field campaigns of the Islands of Change project, directed by Dr. Sophia Perdikaris and funded by the National Science Fundation (USA), three Archaic Age sites were identified and excavated by an international team. The analysis of these sites and their respective collections which were solely composed of shell and lithics, helps to better understand Barbuda’s place in the Archaic Age of the Northern West Indies. This thesis presents these excavations, discusses the results of the analysis and contextualizes the importance of Barbuda in the regional economy.

Full textThis thesis focuses on the conversion of static images of offline handwriting into temporal signals of online handwriting. Our goal is to extend neural networks beyond the scale of images of isolated letters and as well to generalize to other complex types of content. The thesis explores two distinct neural network-based approaches, the first approach is a fully convolutional multitask UNet-based network, inspired by the method of [ZYT18]. This approach demonstrated good results for skeletonization but suboptimal stroke extrac- tion. Partly due to the inherent temporal mod- eling limitations of CNN architecture. The second approach builds on the pre- vious skeletonization model to extract sub- strokes and proposes a sub-stroke level modeling with Transformers, consisting of a sub- stroke embedding transformer (SET) and a sub-stroke ordering transformer (SORT) to or- der the different sub-strokes as well as pen up predictions. This approach outperformed the state of the art on text lines and mathematical equations databases and addressed several limitations identified in the literature. These advancements have expanded the scope of offline-to-online conversion to include entire text lines and generalize to bidimensional content, such as mathematical equations

Full textThe lightning effects on the fastening assemblies of an airplane may be critical. One of the most critical phenomenon is the sparking effect around the fasteners. This effect is usually associated to the contact resistances. Due to the standards, the lack of knowledge about this multiphysics issue and the inability to follow only an experimental approach, the aircraft manufacturers have chosen a modelling way. In this manuscript, we model the fastening assemblies in order to understand the local constraint on these assemblies. The finite difference time domain (FDTD) method mostly used for the lightning issue in the aircraft industry is chosen as the solving method. Several fastener models are developed and validated. We present simplified models, as the resistive wire model for instance, up to complex one with all the contact resistance of the fastener. Furthermore, due to the large uncertainties from one fastener to the other one in the same family, the fastener models are supplemented with statistical models. Thanks to a data base measurement created from several measurement campaigns made by Dassault Aviation, distribution laws are established to characterize the lightning injection effects or the state after lightning injection on the fasteners. Using this statistical models, a stochastic study is presented in order to evaluate the uncertainties in a fuel tank modelling

Full textEven if the concept of Public indemnisation is developping significantly in the Public Law domain, the French doctrine seems to ignore it, despite the fact that an overall approach of this concept must be implemented. First of all, the global identification has to be formal and material. The formal undescores many cases of public indemnisation in which the fact that the payer is a public person or a private person with a public activity is a common denominator. The material way identifies the public indemnisation by its function (the reparation) and by the different interest which explain it : the public interest, the public money protection and the victim interest. On a second hand, the analyse of the public indemnification underlines a compensation plity which is really turning out the victims. Judges and lawmakers changed their point of view; they are now concerned about compensation possibilities and about indemnity itself. However, this policy does not know a total bloom because of limitation which concerned these possibilities and the indemnity efficiency
Gréau, Fabrice. "Recherche sur les intérêts moratoires." Paris 12, 2004. http://www.theses.fr/2004PA122008.
Full textTraditionally, the moratory interests are analysed as a form of damages to which the debtor of a monetary obligation is bound owing to late payment of interest or principal. They are therefore justified by the debtor's contractual liability. This idea must be deepened, because it is too often ignored in the implementation of such interests. However, it alone does not account for the diversity of the matter. Indeed, some interests cannot be justified by the debtor's responsability, either because they relate to a period during which the delay is not legally ascribable to the debtor, or because their compensatory function is supplanted by a punitive function. This is why the substantial analysis must be complemented with a process-based analysis. By dissociating some interests from civil liability, a process-based analysis allows for a better understanding of the function of interests on arrears and paves the way for reforms in keeping with the new perspective

Full textThe thesis is based on a historical and empirical analysis of the problems generated by the development of s&t cooperation projects in europe and, in particular, the role played by france. The objective is to elaborate and finalise an original data base and a methodology which would serve as tools to identity and monitor the actors involved in cooperation activities, and assess their scope and effects. The main purpose is to draw a precise and global picture of french laboratories involved in european programmes in order to highlight a reality that was so far ignored, and to try to answer some important questions : who benefits from european fundings? How are the funds broken down in terms of activity sectors, institutions, size, location, level of involvement, partnerships? Since the launching of the first r&d framework programme in 1984, the eu has funded more than 7,000 research projects, involving some 25,000 participations (restricted to shared cost actions). Together with the uk and germany, france is one of the most active country. Within the frame of our investigation, 3,000 projects with french participations were identified between 1988 and 1993, representing more than 5,200 national participations, covering extensively the french research system. They gather more than a thousand institutions. Over the last decade, the wide range of actors mobilised has proved that european fundings have played an increasingly decisive role in national r&d systems. National involvement in european programmes has now becom a "system" in itself. This system is precisely the subject matter of the survey on which the thesis is based

Full textThe current research aims to assess how the use of online brand communication services may affect the consumer-brand relationship quality perception. An online brand communication service (e-service) is defined as a service proposed by the brand via Internet (ex. Newsletter, forum, game, blog) which reinforces the links with customers and eventually, contributes to create a community ethos. To measure this, we have used a consumer-brand relationship quality scale (CBRQ). This scale is composed of 8 dimensions: love and passion, intimacy, commitment, self-connection, attachment, nostalgia, partner quality and trust. Our research design consists of 2 main studies and 17 face-to-face interviews. The first study evaluates the CBRQ towards the brand of the favorite website in the French baby and toddler sector. The second study represents a qualitative approach of the utilization, attitudes and satisfaction towards online services. The third study measures the CBRQ towards three brands of the French food sector: two corporate brands (Nestlé and Danone) and one product brand (Blédina). The initial contribution of this research is a theoretical framework to study online consumerbrand relationships. Building on that, the next contributions are: a measurement scale of the CBRQ, an analysis of the relationship-building capacity of brands and their online communication services and a segmentation tool based on the emotional profile and the relational orientation (commercial / communitarian) of online services users. Also, this research evaluates the predictive and mediating capacity of the CBRQ, mostly in relation to the intention to buy and to recommend the brand. Key words: Consumer-brand relationship quality (CBRQ), online brand communication services, emotions, online brand community, brand attitude, brand loyalty, value creation, relationship marketing

This research on the annual percentage rate of charge concerns the law relating to this concept, the rules of its determination, its legal functions and the sanctions which are attached to the non-observance of this law. Lenders who violate these rules of law are condemned to refunds of interest sometimes high. These convictions prompt many borrowers to control the mention of annual percentage rate of charge in their credit agreement and to take legal action. Not all disputes are resolved in the same way by the courts. Some access all the borrowers' requests, others systematically refuse them. An inventory of the situation and an analysis of the rules and sanctions are necessary

Full textTheocritus' idylls appear as a poetical answer to man' metaphysical anguish. A poem should first be appreciated; so, it should be short, open to reality, with varied themes and means of expression, being reasonably erudite and above all melodiously shaped. It can thus be opened to the techniques of other arts to become a painting or a symphony as in the second idyll, or even a sculpture like the cup of the first idyll. But the pleasure we get from an aesthetically beautiful shape isn't enough in itself to make us find happiness. That's why, in his bucolic idylls, theocritus suggests to come back to daphnis' world to find again the mythical harmony which exists between the shepherd, his gods and nature. As he leads a peaceful and happy life in a well-known world, close to humanized divinities, man can either enjoy the happiness of being alive or voice his sadness through singing; he can thus sublimate his sorrow or go beyond the conflicts which could oppose him to the others. But, as a hellenistic poet, theocritus can't overshadow the tensions of his time and the pessimistic atmosphere around him which distorts the relationships between people. So his idylls on the whole suggest other forms of peace, more modests ones, like those friendship, memory, truth or even speach can bring. But it's poetical singing which gives real happiness and theocritus finds it there, enjoying carving his verses, with the egotistic conscience of a perfectly mastered talent

Full textThe uniqueness of the Vatican State is undeniable for the Holy See sovereignty in international law. A comprehensive constitutional law study of the power functions, the legal system, and the territory administration allows to analyze the Pope authority of the land. The pontifical sovereignty notion is particular to the Catholic Church. It is based on a religious authority and a temporal power. The two organizations operate simultaneously and are inseparable, nonetheless they could be distinguished. A thoroughly examination of the temporal power system in the Vatican State points the differences from other States. Expressly, the religious authority is superior to temporal power. The history of the institutionalization of the Church identifies all the numerous definitions. The Vatican City State and its elements: power, people and territory form an integral part of the pontifical sovereignty exercise. Will it need a pragmatic or theological constitutionalism? Full textStudying the lexical and grammatical uses of do means engaging with a pivotal element of predicative anaphora. Linguists fail to agree on how to categorise do as used in anaphoric contexts: some take it tobe an auxiliary, others to be a lexical verb and still others to be intermediate between those two categories whenever it seems impossible to draw a clear line between lexical and grammatical instances. Based on a diachronic and synchronic survey of the uses of do, this dissertation uncovers the specific properties of the various forms of the verb and brings to light a “factitive” meaning sharedby all those forms, provided do takes some complementation (verbal in the case of auxiliary do, nominal or adverbial in the case of lexical do). Close scrutiny of electronic corpora of present-day English reveals that this factitive meaning blurs the boundary between lexical and grammatical occurrences. If it were not for an in-depth analysis of do as it occurs in various sentential contexts, the syntactic differences between its grammatical and lexical uses might be obscured by their semantic unity

Three dimensions : relations, regulations and topics of exchanges give a global dynamic picture.
