Full textThis thesis aims to evaluate and analyse the direct and indirect effects of the Rhône-Alpes Technological Research Institutes (IRTs), which are one of the innovation policy devices based on science-industry transfers, created in France as pait of the Future Investment Programme. By applying a difference-in-difference model combined with matching methods, the results show a direct positive effect on turnover and financial autonomy and indicate that this effect varies according to the duration of participation and the type of assistance received. In addition, the type of assistance would play a more important role than the duration of treatment in the effectiveness of TRis. The results also indicate that the TRI had positive indirect effects on turnover, financial autonomy and the share of executives of non-directly beneficiary SMEs but located in the treated area and that these effects do not appear immediately after the treatment but a few years later. In addition, this research work assesses and analyses the direct effects of TRis by focusing on the R&D performance of large companies. Using the random trend model and the synthetic control model, the results of the first model indicate that participation in TRis has had an additional direct effect on total net R&D expenditures and that these expenditures are largely self-financed and used outside the company through collaborations and outsourcing. The results of the second model show that a single company has almost systematic effects on all R&D performance indicators

Full textRockfalls are a common type of fast moving landslide, corresponding to the detachment of individual rocks and boulders of different sizes from a vertical or sub-vertical cliff, and to their travel down the slope by free falling, bouncing and/or rolling. Every year, in the Alpine environment, rockfalls reach urbanized areas causing damage to structures and injuring people. Precise rockfall risk analysis has therefore become an essential tool for authorities and stakeholders in land-use planning. To this aim, quantitative risk assessment (QRA) procedures originally developed for landslides have been adapted to rockfall processes. In QRAs, rockfall risk for exposed elements is estimated by coupling the hazard, exposure and vulnerability components. However in practice, the estimation of the different components of risk is challenging, and methods for quantifying risk in rockfall-prone regions remain scarce. Similarly, the few studies which so far performed QRAs for rockfall assume stationary, precluding reliable anticipation of the risk in a context where environmental and societal conditions are evolving rapidly and substantially. Moreover, rockfall risk remains - as for most of natural hazards - always defined as the loss expectation. This metric offers a unique risk value, usually inconsistent with short/long term constraints or trade-offs faced by decision-makers.On this basis, this PhD thesis therefore aims at (i) reinforcing the basis of QRA, (ii) assessing the effect of environmental changes on rockfall risk, and (iii) proposing method for quantifying rockfall risk from measures of risk alternative to the standard loss expectation. In that respect, we propose a QRA procedure where the rockfall risk is quantified by combining a rockfall simulation model with the physical vulnerability of potentially affected structures and a wide spectrum of rockfall volumes as well as release areas. The practicability and interest of this procedure is illustrated on two real case studies, i.e. the municipality of Crolles, in the French Alps, and the Uspallata valley, in the central Andes mountains. Similarly, the effect of environmental changes on rockfall risk is considered by comparing rockfall risk values in different land-use and land-cover contexts. Last, we implement in our procedure on an individual basis two quantile-based measures, namely the value-at-risk and the expected-shortfall, so as to assess rockfall risk for different risk-management horizon periods. All in all, this PhD thesis clearly demonstrates the added value of QRA procedure in the field of rockfall, and reinforces its basis by implementing analytical, statistical or numerical models. The resulting panel of risk maps, also proposed under non-stationary contexts, are of major interest for stakeholders in charge of risk management, and constitute appropriate basis for land-use planning and prioritizing of mitigation strategies

Full textEmblematic sectors of the coasts of western France and peri-urban areas, vegetable production and farming are undergoing some major transformations : agribusiness integration, internationalization of markets, phytosanitary regulation, increased need for hired labor, installation outside the family-owned organisation, development of organic farming and short food supply chain food territorialization.Faced with the recent changes impacting this historically diversified productive sector, this social geography work is based on a typology of farms at the scale of Lower Normandy, resulting from the multivariate statistical analysis of the Agricultural Census, and complemented by a regional press review. The field survey complements the methodological approach in order to link the structural study to the functional analysis of farming systems. The results constitute a prerequisite for the analysis of the sectors through the localized coordination of market gardening and vegetable farms in the form of zones (peri-urban productions) or (micro) agricultural production basins (Créançais and Val de Saire, Baie du Mont-Saint- Michel, Lingreville, Plaine de Caen and Perche Ornais). Complementedby field surveys, the diachronic and systemic analysis of these localized agrifood systems reveals varied productive trajectories between adaptation, crisis, reconversion and emergence. These dynamics arise from the interrelationships between local agricultural worlds, rural and urban worlds which take place at different scales, from the localized production region to the political region, and according to national and supranational political and economic frameworks. The thesis analyzes vegetable basins or market production areas as a constituent element of different types of localized social spaces. The socio-territorial configurations identified define contexts of socialization with different class relations. Based on interviews, direct and participatory observations and ethnographic immersions, the thesis sheds light on the stratification of the vegetable and market growing worlds in Lower Normandy, from established fractions of the agricultural bourgeoisie and others in the process of gentrification, up to to the professionalization of popular vegetable practices, through the fractions of a degraded or renewed bourgeoisie. These different agricultural fractions are not considered or integrated in the same way by local public policies for land use planning and economic development. Moreover, the greater or lesser weight of these groups in the local space is the product of small-scale political and economic strategies. As a result, certain basins constitute popular places in the territory of agribusiness companies
