Abstract:
Television static represents the absence of a legible image and the presence of something iconic and disturbing - a sinister abstraction. These repeating rhythms also occur in the Hail Mary prayer, in the houses in my neighborhood, in large crowds, and in my mother's crotchet patterns. The unsettling aspect of repetitive mark making in my drawings mirrors in part my psychotherapy, in which the past is revived over and over, as well as the idea of penance absorbed through my Catholic background.Since moving away from Mexico I have been using imagery related to the United States: rivers, mountains, and landscapes. But in the final drawings this subject matter remains distant to me; I connect to the work only through making marks on paper. On one level, specificity is important: which river? or which mountain?, but another kind of connection is made when the images cease to be legible. As information accumulates on the surface, I am interested in a purely visual and phenomenological effect that briefly defies the emotional nature of my source material.

Abstract:
This document explains the use of different metrics involved with record linkage. There are two forms of record linkage: deterministic and probabilistic. We will focus on probabilistic record linkage used in merging and updating two databases. Record pairs will be compared using character-based and phonetic-based similarity metrics to determine at what level they match. Performance measures are then calculated and Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curves are formed. Finally, an economic model is applied that returns the optimal tolerance level two databases should use to determine a record pair match in order to maximize profit.

Abstract:
The music industry is in turmoil. As physical sales are failing, digital sales are increasing rapidly. As a result, traditional business models in the recording industry are rendered insufficient and even obsolete. At large, the industry is spending money and effort on trying to control and limit the current development, but it is getting increasingly obvious that the future of music is digital. The main subject to this study, is to take an unbiased look on new and alternative business models that take advantage of the digital revolution. The underlying question is what can be done to exploit the developing situation – and is it at all possible to make a living as any kind of record company in the future music industry? There is precious little research done in regard to the digitalisation of music, but traditional theories as well as experiences from other industries do apply. The Business Model framework allows for a combined strategic perspective (of both RBV and positioning effects and activities) to be broken down in practical solutions. In this report, it is used to both analyse existing models and propose new ones. It is clear that the recording industry is a victim to its own traditions, that previous investments have them collectively rooted. However, by applying traditional strategic thinking and taking creative use of new technologies, new business models could be identified and old ones adapted. Strategic and management theory is combined with a small survey to supply the foundation of the study. In all, it is mainly a work of creative thinking and strategic business development. The survey is used primarily as a backup to support conclusions based on articles, and although small it successfully describes the feelings of more than 85% of the recording industry in Sweden. It draws a picture of a business in change, where the actors do understand that digital music is a necessity, although the actual activities still revolve around the traditional, physical market. As facts and theories are applied, new business ideas are proposed. Various payment solutions are explored; PPU, subscriptions and indirect financing. There are a multitude of ways to do business in the digital domain, a few are studied in this thesis: Concepts such as access providing, mobile content, content indexing and artist development are explained and analysed. It must be concluded, that even though the future of the traditional record company business model is far from bright, there are several openings available to the conventional companies. Ways to exploit existing skills and advantages, yet adapting them for an altogether new playing field. The future of the music industry might look very different from the past, but everything points to a strong future where new, ambitious and creative actors have the opportunity to claim strong, defendable positions with revenues resembling or even surpassing those of the current industry.

Abstract:
Thesis (Ph. D.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, School of Architecture and Planning, Program in Media Arts and Sciences, 2005.
Includes bibliographical references (p. 258-273).
Reading and writing have become the predominant way of acquiring and expressing intellect in Western culture. Somewhere along the way, the ability to write has become completely identified with intellectual power, creating a graphocentric myopia concerning the very nature and transfer of knowledge. One of the effects of graphocentrism is a conflation of concepts proper to knowledge in general with concepts specific to written expression. The words 'literate' and 'literacy' themselves are a simple case: their connotations sometimes focus on the process of reading text and sometimes on the kinds of knowledge that happen to be associated in our culture with people who read many books. This thesis has a conceptual and an empirical component. On the conceptual side a central task is to disengage certain concepts that have become conflated by defining new terms. Our vocabulary is insufficient to describe alternatives that serve some or all of the functions of writing and reading in a different modality. As a first step, I introduce a new word to provide a counterpart to writing in a spoken modality: speak + write = sprite. Spriting in its general form is the activity of speaking 'on the record' that yields a technologically-supported representation of oral speech with essential properties of writing such as permanence of record, possibilities of editing, indexing, and scanning, but without the difficult transition to a deeply different form of representation such as writing itself. This thesis considers a particular (still primitive compared with might come in the future) version of spriting in the form of two technology-supported representations of speech: (1) the speech ·in audible form, and (2) the speech in visible form.
(cont.) The product of spriting is a kind of 'spoken' document, or talkument. As one reads a text, one may likewise aude a talkument. In contrast, I use the word writing for the manual activity of making marks, while text refers to the marks made. Making these distinctions is a small step towards envisioning a deep change in the world that might go beyond graphocentrism and come to appreciate spriting as the first step--but just the first--towards developing ways of manipulating spoken language, exemplified by turning it into a permanent record, permitting editing, indexing, searching and more. The empirical side of the thesis is confined to exploring implications of spriting in educational settings. I study one group of urban adults who are at elementary levels of reading and writing, and two groups of urban elementary school children who are of different ages, cultures and socioeconomic status, and who have appropriated writing as a tool for thought and expression to greater or lesser extents. One effect of graphocentrism in our culture is the very limited and constrained developmental path of literacy and learning. This has not always been the case. And it does not need to be so in the future. This thesis discusses some small ways in which we might re-value modes of expression in education closer to oral language than to writing. This thesis recognizes three ways in which spriting is relevant to education: (1) spriting can serve as a stepping stone to writing skills, (2) it can in some circumstances serve as a substitute for writing, and (3) it provides a window onto cognitive processes that are present but less apparent in the context of producing text.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis examines performance style in commercial recordings of the works of Anton Webern. Considering style not as a ‘surface’ issue but one essential to questions of musical meaning, I explore the relationships between the sound of Webern recordings and the ways in which people have understood his music. This question is addressed from both historical and psychological perspectives and using both critical and empirical methodologies. In Chapter 1, I argue that Webern favoured a particular kind of pre-war performance style for his works, before moving on in Chapter 2 to an historical survey of Webern recordings and reception from the 1930s to the present day. I outline the idea, proposed by Timothy Day and others, that performers have moved away from the dry ‘pointillism’ of Robert Craft’s pioneering 1950s LP set towards a more ‘lyrical’ and ‘expressive’ Webern style. In Chapter 3, I analyse this trend in more detail and relate it to broader changes in twentieth-century performance styles and recording practices. Chapters 4 to 6 are case studies of particular passages or works by Webern based on recording data. Chapter 4 examines string quartet intonation in a passage from Op. 5 no. 5, Chapter 5 discusses timing in the first movement of the Op. 27 Piano Variations and Chapter 6 considers vocal portamento in recordings of the Op. 14 Trakl songs. The empirical results in each of these chapters are related to wider critical issues such as the ideological significance of equal temperament, the relationship between musical structure and expressive performance and the construction of a lyrical voice. Studies on music perception, record reviews and material from interviews with performers are used to inform discussions of the links between sound and meaning. An original and extensive Webern discography is included on the accompanying DVD.

Abstract:
Recently, a focus by the research teams has been the conception and inclusion of intelligent systems in road tra c. Called Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), they are intended to minimize the time lost in congestion, energy consumption and environmental, human and material damage, thus trying to contribute to the sustainability of the setor. One of the known examples is the Electronic Fee Collection (EFC). EFC uses Dedicated Short- Range Communications (DSRC). Currently, there are some issues that need to be achieved to the e ective development of these systems. Because we are dealing with systems that have constant evolution, new technologies are needed for design of these terminals that make possible to be frequently updated. The best solution to meet such requirements is to use Software De ned Radio (SDR), that is, handle the radio signals as much as possible by digital domain and, eventually, using software. This dissertation aims to develop part of a BPSK receiver for DSRC using SDR. The radio receiver includes conversion of received signals from analog to digital and then the demodulation in FPGA. Therefore, it is initially made a presentation of communications involving DSRC standards at European level, such as the advantages of using SDR in this project. For the conceptualization of the project to be implemented, they are studied and simulated some of the most important architectures in the reception of BPSK signals. Analyzing the advantages and disadvantages of each one, the demodulation method chosed for the implementation was the Costas loop. Next, it is made a detailed presentation of the two main modules of receiver implementation: the construction of the ampli cation, ltering and analog to digital conversion board, and the realization of BPSK demodulator in FPGA. In a last phase, using validation and evaluation tests, several results are presented that illustrate the operation of the system. It was concluded that the receiver can demodulate the received signals. The dissertation ends with some suggestions for a maybe future evolution of the equipment.

Mestrado em Engenharia de Computadores e Telemática
This dissertation proposes and presents a technologic framework to perform record linkage. The proposed approach begins by defining a sequence of tasks necessary for record linkage. Then, several methods to split these tasks in small work units are discussed. The solution architecture is based on various executors that carry out the work units in a parallel manner, thereby making the process quicker. Finally, the benefits of using this approach in different contexts are also presented.

Music Education
Ph.D.
This research continued a line of inquiry previously established at Project P.L.A.Y. School, a play-based, Reggio-Emilia-inspired preschool in Elkins Park, Pennsylvania, the purpose of which was to explore what can happen when young children and adults co-construct music in a social, relationship- and play-based environment. Three questions initially guided this study: 1) How does musical content emerge? 2) How is music play developed in this setting? 3) How do children and their teachers story their music experiences? Using narrative and heuristic approaches to inquiry, I, along with my co-researchers, highlighted ways to make children's musical learning audible and visible. Having been a member of this community in the dual role of musical play partner and researcher since fall of 2012, I framed this dissertation study to encompass the weeks of September 16 through December 18, 2014. During that time frame, I increased my visits from once to twice weekly, with fourteen children aged 2.5 through 5 years old, five of whom I knew from the previous year, and five other adults. As both a play partner and researcher, I continued my role as music facilitator who views young children as competent and capable co-music researchers. Amidst other stories, I increased focus as I continued a pedagogy of close listening to children as music co-researchers. Living alongside each other at Project P.L.A.Y. School, children and adults generated and collected shared musical stories. Data sources for this study included audio and video recordings, photographs, artifacts such as artwork and musical notation, and my research notes and journal. I continued using narrative and heuristic approaches to inquiry, and restoried narrative vignettes highlighting children and adults as music co-researchers. From the resulting grand narrative, I found that shifting lenses and all adults mindfully viewing these young children as competent music researchers facilitated and supported children's creative, multimodal expressions of their research interests. Viewing children's and adults' interactions through the lens of co-music researchers lead to abundant, creative musical expression from children and adults alike. Musical content emerged when adults and children interacted as music co-researchers and protagonists in their shared stories. This inquiry generated the following additional questions: 1) How can adults best facilitate young children's musical research interests? 2) How can adults and young children make their collaborative research audible and visible? Implications from this study include encouraging all adults to adopt a pedagogy of listening, to notice and value children's creative musical expressions, and to value children's musical lines of inquiry as researchers.

The thesis describes and analyses post-documentary photography with emphasis on contemporary Chinese theory and practice. The traditionally defined documentary function of photography has been challenged on many sides and the technology growth of the new media has caused the structural change of photographic language. Documentary function, the core characteristics of photographic language, is rapidly falling apart in this change. As an imported tool, photography has taken a special road in its growth in China. For well known ideology reasons, the documentary function of photography has displayed some very peculiar changes in its traditional past as well as in globalized China today. This paper will try to analyze various causes that influence the documentary function of photography, compare political and cultural differences and show the post-documentary characteristics of contemporary Chinese photography.

Abstract:
Personal Health Records (PHRs) allow patients to access and in some cases manage their own health records. Their potential benefits include access to health information, enhanced asynchronous communication between patients and clinicians, and convenience of online appointment scheduling and prescription refills. Potential barriers to PHR use include lack of computer and internet access, poor computer or health literacy, security concerns, and provider disengagement. PHRs may help those living in rural areas and those with chronic conditions such as heart failure, monitor and manage their disease, communicate with their health care team and adhere to clinical recommendations. To provide some much needed actual research, a descriptive mixed methods study of the usability, usefulness, and disease management potential of PHRs for rural heart failure patients was conducted. Fifteen participants were enrolled. Usability issues fell into three categories: screen layout; applying consistent, standard formatting; and providing concise, clear instructions. Participants used PHR features that were more convenient than other methods or that had some additional benefit to them. There was no difference between rural and urban participants. A heart failure nurse promoted recording daily heart failure symptoms in the PHR. Most participants did so at least once, but many found it cumbersome. Reasons for recording included the comfort of having clinical staff monitor the data. Participants who were stable did not find recording as useful as did those who were newly diagnosed or unstable. Participants used asynchronous communication to send messages to the heart failure nurse that they would not otherwise have communicated. The study expands the knowledge of PHR use by addressing useful functionality and disease management tools among rural patients with heart failure. The patients were able to complete tasks they found useful. The increased communication and disease management tools were useful to some.

Abstract:
Consider the following problem: given a database of records indexed by names (e.g., of companies or restaurants) and a new name, determine whether the new name is in the database, and if so, which record it refers to. This problem is called record linkage. Record linkage is a challenging problem because people do not consistently use the official title of a company, but use abbreviations, synonyms, different orders of terms, and the title can contain typos. We provide a probabilistic model using relational logistic regression to find the probability of each record in the database being the desired record for a given query, and find the best record(s). Our model addresses many of challenges of the record linkage problem and provides good results when exact term matching search algorithms fail. We evaluate our model on a large real-world data set. Obtained results show that the model is a promising probabilistic record linkage model.

Monosulcate, disulcate and zonosulcate pollen are described from fossil material and closest affinities with recent palms suggested. Pollen morphology of recent palms is summarised and discussed, and compared with pollen of selected monocotyledonous families. The bearing of pollen data on recent palm systematics is considered at various levels from subfamily to species. Angiosperm pollen evolution is re-considered and evolutionary pathways for palm pollen aperture types and exine types are suggested. In the light of recent pollen morphology for the family the fossil record of palm pollen is re-evaluated. Some widely accepted affinities are challenged while previously unconsidered affinities are suggested, particularly for the mid- Cretaceous. The need is emphasized for future fossil pollen studies to look critically for pre Late Cretaceous palm-like monosulcates, which would be more informative of the early history of the family than the apparently highly evolved, easily recognisable Spini. -onocolpiles of the Late Cretaceous. Palaeogeography, environment and distribution of fossil records and depositional environment are discussed. Probable evolutionary pathways of pollen morphology, including pollen tetrad data which suggests imultaneousra thert han successivem eiosisa s the plesiomorphics tate,o ffer further evidencet hat the palmsa re indeeda n ancient group, and support the hypothesis that the palms may have originated in South America and Africa (West Gondwana)in the Late Jurassic or early Cretaceous, prior to the complete separation of these continents.

Abstract:
Thesis (M. Eng.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, 2003.
Includes bibliographical references (p. 52-53).
Information routinely collected by health care organizations is used by researchers to analyze the causes of illness and evaluate the effectiveness of potential cures. Medical information sharing systems are built to encourage hospitals to contribute patient data for use in clinical studies. These organizations possess a wide variety of environments and risk assessments, and require sufficient assurances of patient privacy. This thesis introduces mechanisms to dynamically generate an applicable security policy for medical information sharing systems. We present implementation-independent mechanisms that are capable of interoperating with different security settings at different sites to produce security configurations with significantly different characteristics and vulnerabilities. We also present a rules-based agent to assist in the selection process. This approach gives maximum freedom to generate the appropriate system according to the tradeoffs between cost, patient privacy, and data accessibility.
