Abstract:
A polymer-based capacitive micromachined ultrasonic transducer (CMUT) is developed to measure surface roughness. The transducer is designed with two groups in a ratio of two to one. By using air-coupled ultrasound, the transducer can evaluate surface roughness in five modes: full transmission/ full reception, majority transmission/ majority reception, majority transmission/ minority reception, minority transmission/ majority reception, and minority transmission/ minority reception. Experimentation shows the CMUT can identify the surface roughness using a sample of sandpaper with surface roughness Rrms ranging from 11.4μm to 179.8μm. The results indicate that the full transmission/ full reception mode has maximum signal output and the minority transmission/ majority reception mode can obtain a good signal output with a better energy efficiency rating.

This article demonstrates that both the historical hypothesis and the hermeneutic hypothesis are misleading in the approach regarding the problems of reception. Studying certain performance practices of American silent film, the author concludes that instead of positing cultural conditions for audiences as the basic catalyst for changes in reception, we need to pay greater attention to the capacity of texts to contain and control their own reception.

Abstract:
This paper completes an exploration analysis of onshore ballast water treatment alternatives at major ports. e authors had presented results for option (1) ballast water treatment onshore installed in two iron ore ports in 2012 applying the discrete events simulation model. Now, two more options are presented: (2) mobile and (3) desalination reception facilities. e previous simulation model developed called TRANSBALLAST, was adapted to consider these two new alternatives. is model was applied to the same ports presented in 2012 and this evaluation also includes one more port with 50 million tons annually (Mta) of iron ore transport capacity. e results uncovered that for (2) there is an increase of 1.90 days on the average waiting time of ships that moored at Port 1. In (3), the average waiting time and berth occupation rates were observed to remain the same presented in (1). One of the major differences between the systems consists in catching sea water to increase the desalination plant operational capacity. Among those three onshore ballast water treatment alternatives, (2) does not impact port terminals infrastructure. Additionally, option (2) could be offered to ports users as a ballast water treatment service and ship-owners might not need any onboard ballast water treatment system. (3) Might be feasible to ports regions without enough water supplies solving two issues: transfer of invasive species from ballast water and water recycling.

Abstract:
Millimetre-waves offer the possibility of wide bandwidth and consequently high data rate for wireless communications. For both uni- and dual-polarized systems, signals sent over a link may suffer severe degradation due to antenna misalignment. Orientation robustness may be enhanced by the use of mutual orthogonality in three dimensions. Multiple-input multiple-output polarization diversity offers a way of improving signal reception without the limitations associated with spatial diversity. Scattering effects often assist propagation through multipath. However, high path loss at millimetre-wave frequencies may limit any reception enhancement through scattering. We show that the inclusion of a third orthogonal dipole provides orientation robustness in this setting, as well as in a rich scattering environment, by means of a Rician fading channel model covering all orientations for a millimetre-wave, tri-orthogonal, half-wave dipole transmitter and receiver employing polarization diversity. Our simulation extends the analysis into three dimensions, fully exploiting individual sub-channel paths. In both the presence and absence of multipath effects, capacity is observed to be higher than that of a dual-polarized system over the majority of a field of view.

Abstract:
With the aim of improving the quality and expanding the functions of digital terrestrial television broadcasting services, we have been developing an advanced transmission system that inherits key features of the current Integrated Services Digital Broadcasting-Terrestrial (ISDB-T) system, which employs hierarchical transmission based on frequency division multiplexing (FDM) and a segment structure. The advanced ISDB-T system has a new signal frame structure that enables bandwidth to be flexibly allocated to multiple services for different reception scenarios, such as fixed reception and mobile reception, compared with ISDB-T. By introducing transmission technologies such as the latest forward error correction and modulation scheme, this specification has high spectral efficiency and transmission robustness, i.e., the transmission capacity increases by about 10 Mbps for the same required carrier to noise ratio (CNR) in comparison with the current ISDB-T system, or the required CNR can be reduced by about 7 dB for the same transmission capacity. We describe the channel coding scheme and evaluated the performance of bit-interleaved coded modulation (BICM) in simulations. This paper provides a BICM selection guideline based on the simulation results for fixed reception scenarios toward the practical application of advanced ISDB-T.

Abstract:
It is often assumed that the benefit of hearing aids is not primarily reflected in better speech performance, but that it is reflected in less effortful listening in the aided than in the unaided condition. Before being able to assess such a hearing aid benefit the present study examined how processing load while listening to masked speech relates to inter-individual differences in cognitive abilities relevant for language processing. Pupil dilation was measured in thirty-two normal hearing participants while listening to sentences masked by fluctuating noise or interfering speech at either 50% and 84% intelligibility. Additionally, working memory capacity, inhibition of irrelevant information, and written text reception was tested. Pupil responses were larger during interfering speech as compared to fluctuating noise. This effect was independent of intelligibility level. Regression analysis revealed that high working memory capacity, better inhibition, and better text reception were related to better speech reception thresholds. Apart from a positive relation to speech recognition, better inhibition and better text reception are also positively related to larger pupil dilation in the single-talker masker conditions. We conclude that better cognitive abilities not only relate to better speech perception, but also partly explain higher processing load in complex listening conditions.

Abstract:
The so-called refugee crisis in 2015/2016 created opportunities for faith-based organizations, community initiatives, volunteers and refugees to get actively involved in refugee reception in Amsterdam. This study investigated the resilience potential of three refugee reception approaches that were taken during that transformative period: those of a semi-governmental organization (COA), a faith-based organization (The Salvation Army) and a community initiative ( Hoost). Based on qualitative data, the article shows that the nexus of regulations and flexibility in crisis responses impacts the ability to employ multiple local resources and thus predetermines the capacity to adopt resilient solutions to refugee reception during crises. The authors plead for daring governmental efforts that acknowledge, connect and facilitate the innovative power of local communities, faith-based organizations, volunteers and refugees in the refugee reception process without further withdrawals of state responsibility for refugee reception. However, it is crucial that such innovative efforts integrate and learn from existing knowledge to prevent mistakes from being repeated.

Abstract:
The aim of this study is to increase the capacity of the 1090 MHz secondary surveillance radar (SSR) channel by novel transmission and decoding techniques. In particular, multilateration stations have omni-directional antennae; hence considering aircraft traffic and including the extension of surveillance to cooperating vehicles, the reception of superimposed signals is more and more probable. We propose mitigating this problem by combining frequency agility and source separation techniques; we analyze the pertaining channel capacity improvement, and then evaluate the detection and timing estimation for frequency-shifted and separated signals.

Abstract:
Background: The need to identify, analyze and establish relationships between destinations and tourist emission, as terminus points between which the tourist circulation takes place, arises from the structural and functional complexity of tourism, on the one hand, and from its unprecedented expansion, on the other hand. Material and methods: Within the present study, which concerned Romania as a tourist destination, a number of specific, determinative indicators for the emission areas and the tourist destinations were identified and analyzed. Results: The obtained results focused on the analysis of: capacity, hierarchy, spatial distribution and establishment of relations between tourist emission / reception centers. They pointed out that Bucharest is the most important center of emission and tourist destination, followed by big urban centers of Constanța, Brasov, Mangalia, Cluj, Sibiu, Iași, etc., with some oscillations in what supposes their capacity of emission respectively tourist reception. Conclusions: The spatial distribution of the tourist emission-reception centers at the level of Romania is a discontinuous, individualized nuclei of utmost importance (the mountain area, the Black Sea coast and the Bucharest area) and the poor areas in infrastructure and tourist objectives, which determines a low flow of tourists.

Abstract:
The emergence of new 2.0 net collaborative economies has brought an increase in the number of tourists, changing the paradigm of the tourist-housing sector in the main cities around the world. This has directly impacted inhabitants and land-use planning, and there is no general agreement yet between different public and private agents on how to deal with the problem. In this document, a model supported by scientific approaches is presented to assist in planning for sustainable land use through assessing its reception capacity to host tourist housing. The area of study is a medium-sized city in Spain with four UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The methodology is based on the application of the multicriteria decision paradigm in the geographical information systems’ field to deal with complex problems with several alternatives and various criteria to be evaluated. As a result, we obtained a classification of every part of the study area, depending on the reception capacity of the considered uses. The main conclusion is that tourist housing must be regulated, although its effects cannot be generalized, since specific analysis for every neighborhood in a territory is needed.

Abstract:
This essay examines the early reception of Scheler’s anthropological thought in Spain. The article traces the two main ways of reception of Scheler’s work in the School of Madrid and the School of Barcelona. I argue that, on the one hand, the Spanish translations of the works of the early phenomenologists – Scheler was a central figure among them – contributed to the diffusion of Scheler’s thought; and that, on the other hand, the Spanish authors subjected Scheler’s thought to a critical assimilation and further developments. Scheler influenced the Spanish philosophy of the human affectivity, in which the capacity to feel, the values and love as a kernel of the human being occupy an exceptional position. This reception shows the originality of Spanish authors that incorporate Scheler’s ideas to their anthropological interest and develop these ideas in the direction of their own phenomenological anthropology.

Abstract:
A kind of minimum mean square error linear equalizer (MMSE-BLE) algorithm is presented for the solution on channel capacity of single-carrier code division multiple accesses (SC-CDMA) system, this algorithm received data symbol vector multiplied by covariance matrix by using Wiener estimator, and gets the decorrelation of multiple access interference (MAI), inter-symbol interference (ISI) and noise. MMSE-BLE algorithm calculates the channel capacity with MMSE criterion algorithm, so that it can analyze the multi-user uplink channel capacity of space-time coding SC-CDMA system under the multipath conditions effectively. The simulation results show that the number of user, path, transmitting and receiving antennas, multipath diversity gain, etc. All of them have an impact on the capacity of multi-user system, it seems that multiple antennas should be used for reception to get single-path diversity gain in frequency selective channels.

Abstract:
The need for strengthening fishers' adaptive capacity has been proposed in the literature as an important component of effective fisheries governance arrangements in the presence of rising numbers of external drivers of change. Within the context of small-scale fisheries, government subsidies have been the main tool used for increasing adaptive capacity. We examine the relationship among adaptive capacity, subsidy programs, and fishers' participation in fisheries management, as a potentially important mediating factor affecting outcomes using a data set from two periods of a fishing community in Baja California Sur, Mexico. Our results show a correlation between those fishers with access to decision-making venues and their reception of subsidies, yet the effect of participation and subsidies on fishers' adaptive capacity is limited. This appears to be due to the authorities' lack of commitment to strengthening fishers' adaptive capacity through subsidies programs, and fishers' lack of trust in the governance processes.

In a cognitive radio network, the secondary users place the packets to be transmitted on a queue to control the order of arrival and to adapt to the network state. Previous conceptions<br />assigned to each secondary user a single queue that contains both received and forwarded packets. Our present article divides the main queue into two sub queues: one to receive the arrived packets and the other to transmit the available packets. This approach reduces the transmission delay due on the one hand; to the shifting of data placed on the single queue, and on the other hand; to the sequential processing of reception and transmission, in theprevious designs. All without increasing the memory capacity of the queue, in the new approach.

Abstract:
The increase in grain production causes a significant increase in the demand for suitable places to receive and store these products for a more extended time and preserve the harvested grains' properties. The drying system in the storage units has become the bottleneck for grain reception. One solution to reduce bottlenecks in the reception of grain storage units is adopting the dry-aeration operation. This work aims to present a bibliographic review of grain drying and the drying system called dryeration, based on prospecting in textual and referential databases of good factors and impact. The use of the dryeration system allows to increase the flow in the reception of the storage units, which, compared with conventional drying methods, generates an increase of over 50% in the capacity of the dryer, reduces energy consumption by up to 30%, removing up to 2% additional grain moisture and provides grains less susceptible to cracking and breaking.

Abstract:
AimThis service aimed to improve patient access to treatment for urinary tract infections (UTI), impetigo and exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and relieve pressure on general practice and out of hours services.BackgroundIn 2016, a service (Pharmacy First) was introduced in Forth Valley for the management of UTI, impetigo and exacerbation of COPD using patient group directions in community pharmacies. Trained pharmacists supplied a limited range of prescription medicines. Pathways for GP referral were defined. After 5 months of implementation, the service was evaluated.MethodsA quantitative evaluation was undertaken. Feedback was sought from patients, GPs, pharmacists and GP reception staff, using structured questionnaires. Pharmacy records were used to assess referrals and pharmacy data summarised the number and type of consultations. Basic cost data was obtained from the Health Board.FindingsIn all, 75 pharmacies (of 76), and all 55 GP practices in the area, participated in the service. Over a 5-month period, 1189 cases were managed, the majority being for UTI (75.4%) followed by impetigo (15.2%), then COPD (9.3%). Of all cases, 77.9% were prescribed medication by the pharmacist, 9.1% were given advice only and 16.7% were referred to the GP. Independent clinical assessment of a random sample of 30 GP referrals considered all to be ‘appropriate’. Feedback was received from 69 pharmacists, 34 GPs, 54 reception staff and 73 patients. Patients were very satisfied with the service, most frequently citing the ‘quick and efficient’ access to treatment, and a ‘professional service’. Two thirds of GPs (67%) and 59% of reception staff found the service useful, mainly because it reduced pressure on GP appointments. A further cost benefit evaluation would allow objective assessment of the value of this service.

In this paper, we provide an overview of MPR-related research work covering (1) the theoretically proved impacts and advantages of using MPR from a channel perspective to network capacity and throughput; (2) the various technologies that enable MPR from transmitter, transreceiver, and receiver perspectives; (3) previous work on protocol improvement to better exploit MPR. Indeed, MPR approaches have been applied in modern wireless mobile systems but the focus of this paper is to discuss MPR in random access wireless networks. Using MPR in such multihop environments calls for new adaptation on protocols, especially a cross-layer approach. To this end, we detail a scheduling method that targets full utilization of MPR capability.

Abstract:
Ethernet is a popular networking technology in factory automation and industrial embedded systems, frequently using a ring topology for improved fault-tolerance. As many applications demand ever shorter cycle times and a higher number of nodes, the popular ring endure to remain as a valid topology. In this work, we discuss the factors that determine the ring network delay and show how they affect the network cycle time. Since increasing the link capacity has limited reach, we explore a time-triggered protocol that brings the nodes forwarding delay near to the physical layer delay. Additionally, we propose hardware accelerators based on FPGA technology that minimise the packet reception delay from physical reception to delivery to an application handler, preserving Ethernet layers and being compatible with its standard. This paper explains the accelerators concept and implementation, presents measurements using standard Media Access Control implementations, and shows the solution effectiveness with experimental results. We achieved a delay, from physical reception to the triggering of a user-level handler, of 1.1 µs independent of the packet length.

Abstract:
In 2015, French writer Michel Houellebecq’s novel Submission, which depicts a future France with a Muslim president, was repeatedly cited in political discourse about Islam, French identity, and terrorism. In the year of the novel’s publication, several Islamist terrorist attacks targeted France, and Houellebecq was often named in the debate on multiculturalism, immigration and the French secularist principle of laïcité. The reception of the novel is analysed in this article, focusing on ideological argumentation and political debate. Two opposite camps can be identified in this reception structure. Interestingly, the arguments of these camps are analogous to the arguments of the prosecutor and defence lawyer in the 1857 trial of Gustave Flaubert concerning his novel Madame Bovary. One and a half centuries after that trial, questions about the reader’s moral capacity and the author’s responsibility remain at the heart of the debate. While some liberal critics praise the ambiguities of the novel, trusting the reader’s ethical faculties, other critics condemn the novel and accuse the writer of expressing dubious values. As for the ideological homes of these critics, the liberal group represents left-wing, right-wing, and uncertain ideologies, whereas the gatekeeping group largely consists of left-leaning agents. The division into two reception groups and their respective discursive patterns and practices are analysed using the Bovary trial as a basis for comparison. It is concluded that in the anxious political climate of 2015 when terror, migration, and Islam were attracting considerable attention and when the populist right was on the rise, Houellebecq’s novel functioned as a political vehicle in government-sympathetic opinion making and as a practical tool for critics who positioned themselves as safeguarding generous migration and integration policies.

Abstract:
The use of Ka and Q/V bands could be a promising solution in order to accommodate higher data rate, interactive services; however, at these frequency bands signal attenuation due to the various atmospheric phenomena and more particularly due to rain could constitute a serious limiting factor in system performance and availability. To alleviate this possible barrier, short- and large-scale diversity schemes have been proposed and examined in the past; in this paper a micro-scale site diversity system is evaluated in terms of capacity gain using rain attenuation time series generated using the Synthetic Storm Technique (SST). Input to the SST was 4 years of experimental rainfall data from two stations with a separation distance of 386 m at the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) campus in Athens, Greece. Additionally, a novel multi-dimensional synthesizer based on Gaussian Copulas parameterized for the case of multiple-site micro-scale diversity systems is presented and evaluated. In all examined scenarios a significant capacity gain can be observed, thus proving that micro-scale site diversity systems could be a viable choice for enterprise users to increase the achievable data rates and improve the availability of their links.

Abstract:
YouTube is the preferred online platform for today’s teenagers. As such, this article explores the relationship between socialization processes in adolescent peer culture and the meanings behind the production and reception of YouTube videos by teenage audiences. Two fields of enquiry comprise the data analyzed in this article. First, through content analysis, we studied the production of videos on YouTube by teenagers between the ages of 14 and 18. The discursive construction of an audience is expressed by YouTubers through intimate identity performances using specific, dialogical, and conversational modes. The second study investigated the reception of these videos by teenagers between the ages of 12 and 19 through the use of focus groups and in-depth interviews. The results explained the way young people develop a sense of closeness with YouTubers. When examined collectively, our studies reveal how teenage YouTube practices, both as production and reception of content, constitute a twofold social recognition process that incorporates a capacity to recognize oneself in others—like figures with whom one can identify with—and a need to be recognized by others as beings of value. The “intimate confessional production format,” as we have termed it, reinforces this bond.

Abstract:
This article examines the extent to which prefigurative ‘horizons of expectations’ shaped audience engagements with Peter Jackson’s 2012 film The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey ( AUJ). Whereas previous research often focuses on examining prefigurative materials, discussions and debates themselves, this article draws on audience surveys conducted before and after the film’s release to illustrate the impact of prior hopes and expectations on post-viewing responses. While Hobbit pre-viewers were often deeply familiar with various prefigurative materials and intertextual resources, AUJ nonetheless retained the capacity to delight, confound, impress and distress viewers in ways that superseded pre-existing structures of meaning. Thus, while our findings illustrate that processes of reception potentially begin prior to and continue beyond initial moments of viewing, they also affirm the need to engage – theoretically and empirically – with the complex specificity and fluidity of actual reception experiences.

Abstract:
Purpose Working memory capacity and language ability modulate speech reception; however, the respective roles of peripheral and cognitive processing are unclear. The contribution of individual differences in these abilities to utilization of spatial cues when separating speech from informational and energetic masking backgrounds in children has not yet been determined. Therefore, this study explored whether speech reception in children is modulated by environmental factors, such as the type of background noise and spatial configuration of target and noise sources, and individual differences in the cognitive and linguistic abilities of listeners. Method Speech reception thresholds were assessed in 39 children aged 5–7 years in simulated school listening environments. Speech reception thresholds of target sentences spoken by an adult male consisting of number and color combinations were measured using an adaptive procedure, with speech-shaped white noise and single-talker backgrounds that were either collocated (target and back-ground at 0°) or spatially separated (target at 0°, background noise at 90° to the right). Spatial release from masking was assessed alongside memory span and expressive language. Results and Conclusion Significant main effect results showed that speech reception thresholds were highest for informational maskers and collocated conditions. Significant interactions indicated that individual differences in memory span and language ability were related to spatial release from masking advantages. Specifically, individual differences in memory span and language were related to the utilization of spatial cues in separated conditions. Language differences were related to auditory stream segregation abilities in collocated conditions that lack helpful spatial cues, pointing to the utilization of language processes to make up for losses in spatial information.

Abstract:
The Roman Empire received goods from eastern lands through a variety of overland routes crossing the Arabian Peninsula and Mesopotamia, and through seaborne trade via the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean. In particular, the sea routes that utilized the monsoon winds of the Indian Ocean enabled a significant volume of goods to be imported from the East on ships that may often have been of several hundred tons' capacity. The scale of the trade was significant enough for Pliny to claim that 100 million sesterces were being sent annually to India, China, and Arabia. The veracity of these figures has come in for some debate, especially with the publication of a document known as the Muziris Papyrus, which reveals that a shipment of nard, ivory, and textiles received at one of the Egyptian Red Sea ports in the second centuryadwas valued at the equivalent of roughly 7 million sesterces. It is nevertheless clear, particularly from the archaeological and numismatic evidence, that Roman trade with the East peaked in the first and second centuriesad, followed by subsequent decline and a limited revival in the Late Roman period.

Abstract:
Besides intracellular receptors of thyroid hormones, specific binding sites for T3 and T4 were detected on plasma membranes (PM) of some cells and a relationship between membrane reception .and lipid composition of membranes shown. The parameters of 125I-T4 binding to highly purified PM of hepatic and cerebral cells of rats were studied. The hepatic and cerebral cellular membranes were found to contain two sites of hormone binding each, one of these sites being characterized by a high affinity and low capacity, and the other by low affinity and a higher binding capacity. The association constant of highly affine site of hepatocyte membranes was found to be higher than that of brain cell membranes. T4 membranous receptors may be significant in the process of cell “recognition" by the hormone. In vivo and in vitro experiments with 125I-T4 and 14C-labeled thyroxin in ganglioside fractions showed appreciable binding of the hormone to Gm3 fraction, this evidently pointing to participation of this, ganglioside in T4 interaction with membrane receptor. It is possible that gangliosides situated on membranous surface are components of or function as receptors.

Abstract:
In the traditional layered division multiplexing (LDM) system, by simply adjusting the injection level, the reception performance of the core layer (CL) mobile services will be decreased significantly, resulting in the deterioration of system coverage performance. Thus, it is necessary to improve the performance of the enhanced layer (EL) service reception without affecting the reception threshold of CL service. To achieve this, in this paper, an enhanced LDM (En-LDM) scheme that supports multi-service transmission is proposed for the next-generation broadcasting network. In this scheme, at the transmitter end, part of the low-density parity-check (LDPC) coded data stream of fixed service conveyed in the EL will be extracted out through puncturing, and then, it will be transmitted over the CL of the LDM signal along with the original CL data in a frequency domain multiplexing (FDM) manner. At the receiving end, the punctured data of the EL fixed service will be recovered with a higher signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Compared to the traditional LDM scheme, the proposed En-LDM scheme can significantly improve the reception performance of fixed services without decreasing the SNR threshold of mobile services. Moreover, the En-LDM can achieve a higher channel capacity than that of the traditional LDM for both the fixed services and the overall services. The superiority of the proposed En-LDM scheme over the traditional LDM scheme is validated by the simulation under the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) and fading channels.

Abstract:
Abstract In this paper, average channel capacity of optical wireless communication system is evaluated under the combined effect of geometrical loss, attenuation due to weather conditions and weak atmospheric turbulence using a simple closed form expression. Fading induced due to atmospheric turbulence is modeled by log-normal distribution. Considering the fact that the sum of log-normal random variables can be well approximated by another log-normal random variable, the proposed expression has been utilized to compute the channel capacity for spatial diversity reception employing maximum ratio combining and equal gain combining over uncorrelated turbulence-induced fading conditions. It is shown that spatial diversity is an effective technique to mitigate the impairments caused by various atmospheric conditions such as haze, rain and fog. The quantitative improvement in channel capacity achieved by using diversity techniques is investigated and compared. Accuracy of the results is validated with exact results computed using Monte Carlo simulation.

Abstract:
This paper presents the development of the conceptual design of a coastal Patrol vessel with the capacity to receive and deploy a helicopter, in order to increase the efficiency of coastguard operations developed by the Colombian National Navy. As a starting point, the design of the coastal patrol vessel built by Cotecmar and named CPV46 was taken, on which modifications were implemented in its main dimensions and distribution of spaces, which allowed to include a flight deck to receive a BELL 412 EP helicopter, complying with the regulations for this type of operations. This design was developed based on the design spiral method, where each turn of the spiral includes estimates and performance calculations influenced by each other and corresponding to the different stages of the design. For this work, the conceptual design was divided into eight booklets containing the state of the art, mission profile, capacity sizing, naval architecture, propeller selection, generator selection, stability study and cost estimation, concluding in the feasibility of the design based on its cost at a conceptual level.
