Full textUWB is serious candidate for high data rate short range communications needed by the new emerging multimedia devices. UWB is defined to be be any communication system whose fractional bandwidth exceeds 25\% or whose bandwidth exceeds 500\MHz{}. Many spreading schemes hashave been proposed for UWB. Two techniques are studied in this thesis. They are impulse radio and direct sequence spreading. The first part gives an insight into the channel models in UWB context and the maximal bits rates that can be attained. Pulse based techniques are the main concern of the second part. Such techniques are inherently sensitive to timing uncertainties which are analysed from different points of view. First the impact of desynchronization is evaluated on the capacity of PPM modulation, then a jitter compensating algorithm is proposed. Since the channel diversity is an important advantage of UWB modulations, the performance of realistic PPM receiver are studied at the end of this part. It is shown that in presence of time jitter, a tradeofftrade-off is needed between diversity and sensitivity to timing uncertainties. The second part is devoted to direct sequence spreading. The main issue of this technique is the channel length. In order to minimize the amount of inter-symbol interference we choose the sequences to be longer than the channel impulse response. The rate loss is compensated by superimposing multiple codes in synchronous way. A tradeofftrade-off between the constellation order and the number of codes allows to reachreaching higher range than current proposals for WPAN standard

Full textThe Holy Grail radio receiver architecture for Software Radio makes uses of direct RF digitization. The early RF signal digitization theoretically provides maximum re-configurability of the radio front-end to multiple bands and standards, as opposed to analog-extensive front-ends. In addition, in applications for which a large portion of the RF input signal spectrum is required to be received simultaneously, the RF direct digitization architecture could provide the most power-and-cost-effective front-end solution. This is typically the case in centralized architectures, for which a single receiver is used in a multi-user environment (data and video gateways) or in re-multiplexing systems. In these situations, this highly-digitized architecture could dramatically simplify the radio front-end, as it has the potential to replace most of the analog processing. In this Ph.D thesis, we study the trade-offs, from RF to DSP domains, which are being involved in direct RF digitization receivers. The developed system-level framework is applied to the design of a cable multi-channel RF direct digitization receiver. Special focus is provided on the design of an optimum RF signal conditioning, on the specification of time-interleaved analog-to-digital converter impairments, including clock quality, and on some algorithmic aspects (automatic gain control loop, RF front-end amplitude equalization control loop). The two-chip implementation is presented, using BiCMOS and 65nm CMOS processes, together with the block and system-level measurement results. The solution is highly competitive, both in terms of area and RF performance, while it drastically reduces power consumption

Full textOne of the major stakes in the integration of new Electronic Warfare (EW) systems into defence carriers is the reduction of the obstruction of antennas. The bandwidth of the antennas which are used in EW applications can be about 10:1 and the lowest frequency can be close to the hundred of MHz, which makes the integration of the antennas very difficult even impossible according to cases. EW antennas are usually placed above an absorbing cavity. The manufacture of absorbing material is today still "handmade" and thus very expensive. Moreover, these materials are heavy and they do not exhibit the same electric characteristics of one manufacture at the other. The work presented in this report is devoted to the realization of wideband antennas with very low thickness and without absorbing material. We proposed and validated a new structure based on Electromagnetic Band Gap substrate. The new structure makes it possible to remove absorbing materials, to reduce the thickness of the antennas and to reduce the manufacturing costs. The new structure has contrary to all other EBG structures the advantage of being ultra broad band and compact (about 1/100th of wavelength thick). We showed the interest to use such a device to reduce the thickness and to improve the performances of the planar antennas of form and unspecified polarization

Full textThe thesis is devoted to the problem of the naval target characterization when seen by a broadband, surveillance costal radar. Two essential aspects of this problematic are considered: the realistic modeling of naval targets radar echo in marine environment (direct problem) and the representation/identification of the targets in a naval scenario using echoed radar signal (inverse problem). For each target orientation, the electromagnetic echo is computed using a Scattering Center Model (SCM), extracting using CLEAN technique For all target orientations, SCMs are combined in a Global SCM model. Target dynamics is simulated using virtual reality models of small-sized objects floating on the sea surface. Wave-introduced target masking and sea clutter are also accounted for. Target identification is performed using 2D and 3D ISAR images, constructed using broadband scanning signals and superresolution methods. Different kinds of descriptive targets features are issued from ISAR images essentially using Active Deformable Contours. KNN, MLP, SART or SVM classifiers are used to identify scanned targets. Finally, the joint application of all developed simulation tools illustrates modeling and representation of a few radar targets in a simplified naval scenario

Full textExcept high data rate applications, Ultra Wide Band (UWB) shows potential great interest for low date rate systems, in which, major constraints rely on power consumption. This thesis presents the development of critical blocs for RF receiver front end of an innovative architecture dedicated to the latter applications. First, the general context of UWB, and several pulse signal receivers are reminded. Two critical points are highlighted: the excessive power consumption of the gain stages and the difficulty to achieve precise resolution in time do main while keeping low cost devices. Thus, first work objective consisted in the development of low power LNA based on matched amplification to the signal shape. Then, we proposed a novel UWB receiver architecture based on super-regeneration. Measurements results of the chip fabricated in 0,13 flm CMOS process validate the concept

Full textIn this dissertation, a signal generation structure is proposed using which a multitone Local Oscillator (LO) signal is created by a single I/Q modulator. These LOs can be used in the CA receivers to down-convert the transmitted component carriers simultaneously. The multi-tone LO signal structure is further developed to be used at the transmitter as a CA generation solution. Using the proposed structure n-component carriers can be generated in parallel. This structures requires lower sampling rates with respect to the case where RF signals are synthesized directly by digital-to- analog converters. Moreover, less circuitry is required, because one single I/Q modulator is used to generate n component carriers, instead of n I/Q modulators. This work follows on investigating the origin of impairments and mild nonlinearities in our I/Q modulator. To overcome these problems, we focus on the functionality of the overall system rather than each component of the I/Q modulator. This method is called behavioral modeling. Once the nonlinear model is obtained, if its inverse function is applied to the input, a linearized output is expected. The generation of the inverse function is called Digital Pre-Distortion (DPD). We propose a tri-band behavioral model for nonlinearities and impairments in tri-band CA using our I/Q modulator. Furthermore, the DPD of the model is evaluated in simulations and experiments

Full textThis research is based on Ultra Wide Band (UWB) technology, in particularly for low-Rate applications such as sensor network, WPAN and WBAN (for the standard IEEE 802.15.4). The model and design of a non coherent receiver for UWB impulse radio communications has been completed. One of the most important factors in the UWB communications is the receiver sensitivity which determines the maximum transmission range. Another important factor is the energy consumption that determines the lifetime of the power source (battery). In this context, we present in Chapter I an introduction to UWB technology and its different applications. Chapter II deals with a modeling at the system level of non-Coherent receivers as well as a comparative study based on the energy detection and pseudo energy detection. In Chapter III is presented the method of design and implementation of a non-Coherent UWB receiver in the band of 3-5 GHz, as well as measurement results and performance in terms of sensitivity and power consumption. Finally, Chapter IV presents a theoretical study on the different modes of operation of the MOS transistor to understand the operation of each block of the receiver. This allows us to show the new architectures for energy detection and perform the optimization of receiver in terms of sensitivity and power consumption

Full textFemtosecond mode-Locked lasers are generators of optical frequency ‘combs’, whose distinct frequencies cover many tens or hundreds of THz. My PhD work has focused on the study and construction of a particular coupling scheme in an optical cavity, named Vernier coupling. Here, the laser comb and the cavity resonances are deliberately mismatched, as a Vernier rule. This creates Moiré pattern in the cavity spectral transmission, with a periodicity related to the inverse of the mismatch. The first part details the theory behind the coupling of laser and optical cavity modes. Two regimes are identified, called “high” resolution Vernier filtering, when the laser comb structure is probed mode by mode, and “low” resolution filtering where the linewidth of one Vernier order is given by the mismatch. The second part describes the experimental realization of this coupling scheme. It details the locking strategy used to control the resonance position of the cavity (F=3000) in regards of the laser comb (kHz scale). Finally, I present spectra recorded with this setup, focusing on molecular spectroscopy. The spectra of ambient air are recorded in acquisition times around 1 s, that cover the full bandwidth of the femtosecond laser ( 40 THz, 750-850 nm), at 2 GHz resolution. The sensitivity of the absorption measurement reaches 10−9 /cm, with averaging. This high sensitivity comes from an immunity to the frequency-To-Amplitude noise conversion of the “low” resolution Vernier coupling, leading to a signal to noise ratio better than 104. These performances give the spectrometer figure of merit of 4×10−11 cm−1/√ Hz, currently taking third place in rank international state of the art ranking

Full textIn recent years, the sustainable development, especially the control of the electrical appliances' consumption, has became a major issue in our society. The optimisation of each electrical devices' energy is needed to reduce the consumption of home appliances. The objective of this thesis is the realization of a low noise amplifier (LNA) that offers two modes of operation depending on the quality of the received signal: a high performance mode and a low consumption mode.In order to meet the problem related to multistandard systems, the distributed architecture is selected for low noise amplifier. Indeed, it is known for its wide bandwidth and tunable power gain. A design method is proposed, which is based on GaAs technology of TriQuint Semiconductor Texas foundry. The LNA's high performance mode measurement results is at the level of the state of the art. For the low consumption mode, LNA shows good performance while reducing power consumption by 91%.Finally, an innovative reconfiguration strategy is defined. It's applied to a homodyne receiver based on the integration of our LNA. It reduces significantely the receiver's consumption in case where the received power allows the receiver operates in low power mode (constraint of the Bit Error Rate (BER) is verified). Considering each received power is equiprobable, our reconfigurable receiver saves consumption by 77% compared to a conventional receiver that has a single mode (high performance mode)

Full textThe significant development of telecommunication, due to the conception and the deployment of wireless networks always more efficient in term of subscribers’capacity and transmission bit rate, shows a real need of our current society. Thus, the systems planed in order to conform to the new requirements have to work in environments more and more complex (indoor and/or dense urban environments). Nevertheless, these kind of environments present the constraint to generate a wave propagation through a multi-path mecanism. This phenomenon induce, during a numerical transmission, some risks about inter-symbols interferences, a great loose of power reception, etc. . . In order to overcome this drawback, a concept wich exploits the spatial diversity of the radio channel and using both antennae at transmitter and receivers’side (ie. MIMO : ”Multiple Input Multiple Output”) was developed. This last one allows, in a context of personal and metropolitan networks, to conform to the demands of subscribers in term of speed and quality of numerical communication. As a consequence, the transmission channel become the central element and the analysis of these properties is an important stake and an active research subject. This thesis is part of a collaboration between the Department of SIC-XLIM of the University of Poitiers and the Department of Micro-waves of Telecom Bretagne (Brest). His aim is double and concern – in one hand, the influence of environment modeling in MIMO channel caracterization by the intermediary of a propagation simulator using a 3D ray-tracing. More precisely, this work focus on the geometrical description and to a lesser extent on the influence of electrical properties of materials ; – in other hand, the matter of the coupling between antennae, produced by their nearness. The modeling of these last ones, coming from previous investigations made by the Micro-wave department, is firstly reminded. Secondly it is applied to results obtained by a ray approch. Finally, the modeling of mutual coupling beween antennae is improved in order to include fully the polarization properties of antennae. This study is extended to the Ultra Wide Band (UWB) context for which high bit rates is considered. This ultimate step allows to evaluate the beneficts and limitations of the antennae modeling developed in order to give some possible perspectives to this thesis work

Full textThis work is concerned with the characterisation of the sea bottom by means of a constant beamwidth wideband sonar. The originality of this work is: firstly, the development of an experimental wideband sonar system which transmits linear chirp signal (20-140 kHz). Secondly, modelization, identification and classification methods adapted to the bottom backscattering signals have been developed. In the first part, backscattered signals from 5 types of bottoms have been analyzed by the ambiguity function. The performances of the wideband ambiguity function and the narrow band ambiguity function are compared for the chirp signal, and the relationship with the time-frequency representations is presented. In the second part, la distribution of the bottom backscattered energy is analyzed in the time-frequency plane which permits to consider the acoustic diffusion phenomena. In order to improve the comprehension of the Wigner time-frequency representation, we propose an original time-frequency representation adapted to chirp. The comparison with other Cohen's class representations shows the improvement given by our method. At last, in the third part, a rough surface backscattering model is developed. We have shown that the statistical average of the impulse response is a convolution between the impulse response of a plane and the probability density function of the roughness. A roughness estimation method is therefore proposed. This model is well adapted to sand, gravel, and pebbles bottoms. For the silt bottom, a volume backscattering model is developed. In each situation, the results of the estimation are compared with the geotechnical analysis

Full textThis thesis studies different aspects of the correlation process for a new TR-UWB detection method called Time Delayed Sampling & Correlation (TDSC). The TDSC concept is based on inter-correlation between two waveforms captured by two time delayed samplers. This method overcomes the major difficulties in a traditional TR-UWB detection methods based on wide band delay lines. The concept first has been validated by simulation with real data from an experimental setup in 300MHz band. Then, the objective has been to determine different design parameters for silicon integration. A study has focused on the length of the correlation window of the receiver. We give an optimum size of the register file in the waveform samplers which insures optimal detection performances and a large bandwidth for the low cost 0. 35µm CMOS technology with indoor communication channels. We proposed a synchronization scheme with lowest complexity for TDSC. A multiple correlator acquisition structure in conjunction with a training sequence is used to estimate the signal correlation. We also presented an analytical expression for the synchronization probability. Finally the performance of the synchronization solution in a multi-user environment has been verified with a theoretical analysis

Full textThis work is dedicated to the integration of ferroelectric BaxSr(1-x)TiO3 thin films in microwave devices. Initially, the dielectric properties of B0.3S0.7TiO3 films deposited by radiofrequency magnetron sputtering were determined. It has been demonstrated the influence of a buffer layer in the control of orientation films and the impact in the evolution of dielectric properties. The realization of optimized coplanar waveguide has permit to determine the frequency evolution of permittivity, loss factor and tunability up to 67 GHz. The characterization of the dielectric properties has enabled the realization and qualification of the basic element in the design of tunable microwave devices: the ferroelectric capacitance. The agility property has been highlighted within this structure. Subsequently, a complete analysis was conducted on a resonator. An analytical study coupled with the demonstrator realization highlighted the configuration allowing us to exploit the properties of BST films

Full textDue to the nature of their signals and their architectures, Impulse Radio Ultra Wide Band (IR-UWB) systems show interesting features to compete with existing technologies (Zigbee, Bluetooth and RFID UHF) for low cost and low power applications. In this context, this thesis evaluates the potential of UWB systems for the realization of miniature communication devices. The thesis presents UWB communicating devices realized with a System in Package (SiP) technology. Devices incorporate one or several CMOS chips and an antenna directly printed on the board (PCB). Transitions between the PCB and the chips are made with standard wire bonds. The thesis especially focuses on packaging of UWB dice and on the design of UWB front end radio frequency.Due to important parasitic elements limiting its bandwidth, wire bonds transition is problematic for UWB applications (3-10 GHz). This thesis proposes several methodologies to interface integrated circuit and PCB to obtain a broadband transition without increasing cost production. The integration in standard CMOS technology of main components comprising the UWB radio frequency front end (LNA, pulse detector and pulse generator) is studied. The interest of a co-design between silicon and PCB to design these elements is pointed up. Integration and miniaturization of the final system in a SIP technology are also presented

Full textThe rise of wireless communication systems and the big demand of high bit rate links have entailed researches to lie over new communications systems. With this diversity of wireless systems, flexibility for operating between different standards is strongly needed. Cognitive radio (CR) consist the future system that can offer this flexibility. The new features of CRs remains many challenges to their antennas. Miniaturization, isolation and bandwidth improvement, are all real needs and effective challenges. Especially when the geometry of the antenna become more complex in order to fit the terminal chassis. The use of metamaterials (MTM) has been introduced to overcome physics limitations in order to undertake these needs. The analysis of MTM in presence of radiating elements such antennas prove to be a challenge. In this thesis, an new approach to address these challenges is proposed. It is based on a modal concept using the theory of characteristic modes (TCM). It proves to be useful to analyse and design of electrically small antenna (ESA), metamaterial-inspired antennas and metamaterial-based antennas. Furthermore, the same approach is used to evaluate the antenna performances when surrounded by complex artificial materials by proposing closed formulas for the quality factor. This remains into a huge advantage in the antenna shape optimisation in the antenna industry. As a proof of concept, an extremely-wide-band antenna for underlay CR (sensing antenna) is developed using the proposed approach in order to have stable radiation pattern an high efficiency in the electrically small regime. An experimental validation of the performances of all the presented designs is also provided

Full textMost current wireless LANs and future Beyond 3G and 4G mobile networks involve the multicarrier OFDM transmission, based itself on the digital processing of the fast Fourier transform. These systems should cover bandwidths in the order of several tens or even hundreds of MHz. The aim of this thesis was to study the architectures of integrated circuit for a high speed and multi-standard OFDM digital processing. These architectures require both higher speed processing to meet the required throughput, and reconfiguration for multi-standard applications. Moreover, these architectures should meet the requirement of reduced power consumption due to the embedded environment of mobile terminals. In terms of advanced solutions, one considers two different OFDM modulation patterns, the OFDM/ QAM and OFDM/OQAM. This latter requires a pulse shaping polyphase filter implemented in our study on the IOTA prototype function. One considers also SISO/MIMO functionalities. A comparative analysis of various FFT algorithms and architectures has led to identify the best approach which gives a good algorithm architecture adequation. This solution also incorporates the pulse shaping filter, more precisely implementing the IOTA function. One has therefore proposed a memory-based architecture using a time multiplexed operations on a coarse grained matrix optimized for the treatment of the FFT and of the pulse shaping filtering. This time approach allows a realization of advanced OFDM modulation for values of the parameter N, the number of subcarrier, from 64 to 8192 and the parameter L, the truncation length for pulse shaping filter, equal to 2, 4 and 8. The architecture of the matrix applies the same treatment on two or four streams of different samples, for modes MIMO 2x2 and 4x4 respectively. A strategy to manage memories has also been proposed. It is based on a memory banks approach to obtain various memory sizes and to enable the turn of the unnecessary memories. A first FPGA prototyping and an ASIC layout design have validated the functioning and the feasibility of the architecture. The FPGA prototyping platform used was the ML402 from Xilinx incorporating the FPGA XC4VSX35 from the Virtex-4 family. The ASIC layout design has been done using the submicronic 65 nm CMOS technology from STMicroelectronics. The performances obtained out of this architecture makes it a good candidate to cover the different standards based on OFDM modulation

Full textMy thesis work is focusing on the RF signal direct sampling reception after the antenna in a software-defined radio applications and cognitive radio context. The purpose of this technique is to treat the signal whatever the modulation used and in a wide range of frequencies, directly after the antenna while minimizing at maximum the analog part. For this, a passive sampler architecture has been used. The originality of this architecture consists in the implementation of a passive differential sampling system working in quadrature, consisting of a switched capacitors network. By setting the time system constant to a high value compared to the minimum frequency of the RF signal to be demodulated , the sampler acts both as a filter and a frequency mixer. This allows the rejection of interferers outside the reception band and contributes to improve significantly the receiver system dynamic, for a very low consumption. Also, the system is flexible in frequency, which permits to receive the RF spectrum over a wide band of frequencies and detect different types of modulated transmitted signals. It has been integrated into a complete front-end 130nm CMOS technology receiver dedicated to ISM bands applications (433MHz and 868MHz bands) whose transmission data rates are limited to 1Mbit/s. The developed architecture is suitable for software-defined radio or cognitive radio applications where frequency agility, high dynamic and very low power constraints are targeted

Full textPassive Optical Network (PON) representing one of the most attractive FTTH access network solutions, have been widely deployed for several years thanks to their ability to offer high speed services. However, due to the dynamicity of users traffic patterns, PONs need to rely on an efficient upstream bandwidth allocation mechanism. This mechanism is currently limited by the static nature of Service Level Agreement (SLA) parameters which can lead to an unoptimized bandwidth allocation in the network. The objective of this thesis is to propose a new management architecture for optimizing the upstream bandwidth allocation in PON while acting only on manageable parameters to allow the involvement of self-decision elements into the network. To achieve this, classification techniques based on machine learning approaches are used to analyze the behavior of PON users and to specify their upstream data transmission tendency. A dynamic adjustment of some SLA parameters is then performed to maximize the overall customers’ satisfaction with the network

Full textThe aim of this thesis is the design of a wide-band RF analogue front-end for a cellular multi-standard and multiband receiver. The main limitation of receivers today is the need of external SAW filters to protect the LNA and mixer from out-of-band interferers. In this thesis we propose a new technique of positive feed-back which transposes the filters transfer function in RF. Thus, a selective RF filter is created in the LNA input to improve non-linearity performances of the receiver. This RF filter is also configurable in bandwidth and center frequency. An experimental prototype has been made in 65nm CMOS technology. The positive feed-back improves the LNA out-of-band IIP3 by 17dB. The center frequency is configurable from 1.3GHZ to 2.85GHz. Power consumption is of 30mW, while maximal NF is of 6.5dB

Full textBy making possible unprecedented user-centric services (monitoring/smart inventory of personal goods, context-aware indoor navigation, etc.), new radiolocation capabilities are on the verge of modifying in depth mobility-based usages. In this context, the impulse radio - ultra wideband technology (IR-UWB), which theoretically enables to estimate the arrival time of transmitted pulses at the nanosecond scale and hence, the relative distance between a transmitter and a receiver within a few tens of centimeters, has been regularly put forward for the last past decade. In spite of these good intrinsic properties, the obstruction of radio links, either by the carrying body itself or by surrounding obstacles (walls, pieces of furniture. . . ), can result in significant errors on unitary range measurements, degrading the overall positioning performance accordingly, in particular in confined environments (e.g., indoor). In the frame of this PhD work, the main idea was to rely on an integrated IR-UWB receiver architecture, which has the capability to finely estimate the entire multipath profile, in order to improve the localization functionality. An in-depth study of the mobile multipath channel, as perceived by the previous receiver, has been conducted first, leading to the deterministic interpretation (i.e., from a geometric point of view) of the relative temporal evolution of multipath components, as well as to the modelling of their mutual interference. Based on these preliminary investigations, adapted multipath detection, association and tracking algorithms have been proposed (e.g., multi-hypothesis Kalman filters in parallel). All these proposals benefit from the receiver specificities, aiming at capturing the space-time correlation of multipath components under mobility, while minimizing harmful interference effects in dense channels (e.g., by means of combined multi-band channel estimations). In particular, for each non-line-of-sight link independently, the previous solutions allow to correct the estimated arrival time of the missing direct path out of the tracked secondary paths, while enabling the use of a conventional structure for the mobile tracking filter (i.e., fed by several "corrected" links with respect to distinct base stations). These algorithmic developments were first validated by means of simulations (using a semideterminist tool including a complete model of the receiver), before being applied to a measurement data set issued by IR-UWB devices commercialized by the BeSpoon company

Full textUltra-wideband impulse radio (IR-UWB) is a relatively new communication technology that provides an interesting solution to the problem of RF spectrum scarcity and meets the high data rate and precise localization requirements of an increasing number of applications, such as indoor communications, personal and body sensor networks, IoT, etc. Its unique characteristics are obtained by transmitting pulses of very short duration (less than 1 ns), occupying a bandwidth up to 7.5 GHz, and having an extremely low power spectral density (less than -43 dBm / MHz). The best performances of an IR-UWB system are obtained with Rake coherent receivers, at the expense of increased complexity, mainly due to the estimation of UWB channel, which is characterized by a large number of multipath components. This processing step requires the estimation of a set of spectral components for the received signal, without being able to adopt usual sampling techniques, because of the extremely high Nyquist limit (several GHz).In this thesis, we propose new low-complexity approaches for the UWB channel estimation, relying on the sparse representation of the received signal, the compressed sampling theory, and the reconstruction of the signals with finite rate of innovation. The complexity reduction thus obtained makes it possible to significantly reduce the IR-UWB receiver cost and consumption. First, two existent compressed sampling schemes, single-channel (SoS) and multi-channel (MCMW), are extended to the case of UWB signals having a bandpass spectrum, by taking into account realistic implementation constraints. These schemes allow the acquisition of the spectral coefficients of the received signal at very low sampling frequencies, which are not related anymore to the signal bandwidth, but only to the number of UWB channel multipath components. The efficiency of the proposed approaches is demonstrated through two applications: UWB channel estimation for low complexity coherent Rake receivers, and precise indoor localization for personal assistance and home care.Furthermore, in order to reduce the complexity of the MCMW approach in terms of the number of channels required for UWB channel estimation, we propose a reduced number of channel architecture by increasing the number of transmitted pilot pulses. The same approach is proven to be also useful for reducing the sampling frequency associated to the MCMW scheme.Another important objective of this thesis is the performance optimization for the proposed approaches. Although the acquisition of consecutive spectral coefficients allows a simple implementation of the MCMW scheme, we demonstrate that it not results in the best performance of the reconstruction algorithms. We then propose to rely on the coherence of the measurement matrix to find the optimal set of spectral coefficients maximizing the signal reconstruction performance, as well as a constrained suboptimal set, where the positions of the spectral coefficients are structured so as to facilitate the design of the MCMW scheme. Finally, the approaches proposed in this thesis are experimentally validated using the UWB equipment of Lab-STICC CNRS UMR 6285

Full textOver the last few decades the world has undergone a major revolution that has deeply affected the way we use communication networks. New services and applications have appeared demanding a constant increase of the channel capacity. In this period, optical systems have been upgraded at pair with advanced signal processing techniques which have permitted the increase of the spectral efficiency approaching the system capacity to the fundamental limit. It is because is becoming extremely challenging to keep growing the system capacity by this means. In this work, an orthogonal direction is studied to further increase the fibre capacity: extending the optical bandwidth. With this purpose, the use of semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOA) is investigated to be implemented in future ultra-wideband (UWB) systems. The use of SOA amplification changes completely the paradigm in the design of an optical system since all the impairments added by the SOA must be considered. In this work, we assess the reservoir model, a simple yet powerful model, to analyze numerically the nonlinear regime of the SOA for WDM systems. We also show for the first that the linewidth enhancement factor of an SOA can be estimated with a coherent receiver. Finally, it is also studied how the correlation between channels degrades significantly the performance of the SOA and the inclusion of a decorrelation fibre is investigated. The conception of a UWB system is then studied. We characterize a novel ultra-wideband SOA developed by the French project CALIPSO which presents high gain in a 100-nm optical bandwidth with high output saturation power and 6-8 dB of noise figure. We analyze its nonlinear regime for WDM systems and we show for QPSK and 16 QAM modulation formats that the input saturation power can be overtaken by serveral dBs without important nonlinear penalty. On the other hand, a novel technique is studied to compensate fibre nonlinearities in UWB systems: the multicarrier multiplexing, which tries to exploit the concept of symbol rate optimization. Finally, we assess the capabilities of this novel UWB SOA for data-centre interconnection applications with two experiments transmitting up to 113 Tbps data troughput in a 100-nm continuous bandwidth link over 100 km of fibre and then testings is stability with real-time line cards between two points of presence (POP)of Facebook deployed in the Paris area

Full textMetamorphic HEMT, regarding its performances, appears very promising for amplification applications for the transmitter and receiver modules of long distance and high bit rate (50 Gbit/s) optical systems of telecommunications. Indeed, it presents good performances in term ofbandwidth (Ft∼160 GHz), ofbreakdown voltage (8 V) and allows possibilities of effective gain control. This research bas been developed within the framework of project RNRT HEMERODE. First, it consisted in studying, experimentally, the misfunctioning (parasitic effects) related to the operation of the MHEMT on the whole of the structures available. An impact ionisation mechanism, which contributes to the kink effect and influences the breakdown areas of the transistors because of excess gate current, was observed. A comparison of the results according to the structure (simple or double channel) and of the gate recess was reported. The "on-state" and "off-state" breakdown voltages were measured and appear to be weak, because of the strong influence of the impact ionization mechanism. The MHEMT were also evaluated in term of trapping/detrapping mechanisms. Measurements of gate-lag and drain- lag highlighted the presence of traps of which typical signatures of AlInAs were found by isothermal drain current relaxation experiments under gate filling pulses. Then we modelled the various parasitic effects (excess gate current, kink effect, gate-lag and drain-lag) obtained by experimental measurements and security area model of the transistors was defmed. These models were developed using ADS® software

Full textIn this work of thesis, we propose an original communication system allowing to reach high data rate and to fulfill the requirements of quality of service necessary for the communications short range dedicated to intelligent transport. This system is based on the Ultra Wide Band Impulse (IR-ULB) technology and on new modulation scheme named M-OAM (M-states Orthogonal Amplitude Modulation). M-OAM modulations are based on the principle of modulations M-QAM by replacingthe carriers used for QAM modulation with orthogonal waveforms ULB type MGF (Modified Gegenbauer Function). These modulations were evaluated under the conditions of AWGN channel and IEEE 802.15 channels which take account of the real parameters of the road. Besides the high speed required by inter-vehicular communications, it is necessary to ensure simultaneous information exchange between several users of the road. Accordingly, new adaptive multiple access system is proposed. Each user has the possibility to use the adequate modulation OAM according to the desired speed. The receiver of this system is characterized by an intelligent aspect thanks to the integration of the principle of Cognitive Radio (RC) which makes it able to detect the signal arrival and to identify the parameters of the used modulation in order to adapt the demodulation in an autonomous way. A good quality of service is ensured by the proposed novel demodulation method based on the Higher Orders Statistics (HOS) to eliminate the Gaussian noise. The good performances of M-OAM communication system M-OAM as well as the whole of the suggested aspects are validated in experiments within IEMN-DOAE laboratory. In the last part of this document we presented the realization of prototype using real time processing developed on FPGA plateform and exploiting parallelisable algorithms on reconfigurable architectures

Full textClock and data recovery circuits are required in many wireless communication systems. This thesis is about development of such circuits with: firstly, the realization, in HCMOS9 0.13 μm of STMICROELECTRONICS technology, of 1 and 54 Mb/s analog CDR circuits, and secondly, the implementation of programmable digital circuits at low rates. In the aim of an impulse UWB transceiver dealing with video transmission, a CDR circuit at 54 Mb/s rate has been realized to provide clock signal synchronously with narrow pulses (their duration is about a few nanoseconds) from the energy detector. Another CDR circuit has been built at 1 Mb/s rate in a non-coherent IR- UWB receiver power management context. Both circuits have been implemented as 3rd order analog PLL. In this work, a phase comparator suitable for “RZ low duty cycle” data from the energy detector has been proposed. Circuits have been sized to obtain very good performances in terms of jitter and power consumption. Particularly, measured performances of the 1 Mb/s CDR circuit allow to plan an efficient power management (a decrease of more than 97% of the receiver total power consumption). In the context of a telemetry system from aircraft to ground, two digital CDR circuits have also been implemented. A second order digital PLL has been adopted in order to provide synchronous clock and data to an SOQPSK digital transmitter. Also, a digital ELGS circuit has been proposed to work in a PCM/FM receiver. For both CDR structures, the input signal rate is programmable and varies globally from 1 to 30 Mb/s

Full textWith the exponential increase in wireless data traffic risking to overwhelm the current networking infrastructures, millimeter-wave (mmWave) networking is seen as one of the most promising paths out of the logjam. IEEE introduced a new standard, 802.11ad, that uses mmWave frequencies for delivering multi-Gigabit capacities in a wireless local area network setting. Such capacities, however, do not come for free. mmWave frequencies have poor propagation characteristics and suffer from blockage, whose consequences on the networking protocols are not fully understood. Throughout this thesis, we first aimed at an in-depth understanding of two key primitives in 802.11ad networks in environments rich with blockage: user association and reliability. Using offthe- shelf hardware and a multi-layer tracing tool allowing unprecedented granularity in the analysis of 802.11ad networks, we shed lights on blind spots regarding reliability at both link layer and transport layer. The key innovation of the mmWave standard is its beamforming training protocol. Executed periodically at the beginning of every beacon interval, it enables the formation of directional links. To address contention during the uplink part of beamforming training, 802.11ad introduced A-BFT, an Aloha-inspired, two-level backoff race. While central to initial access in 802.11ad networks, the performance of this protocol, however, remains poorly understood. We proposed an accurate analytical finite-population model for evaluating the performance of 802.11ad A-BFT under the assumption of ideal channel conditions. After using an open-source simulator to demonstrate its accuracy, we use our model to assess the performance of A-BFT. We find that a counter- intuitive, quit-easily/be-lazy approach by the stations leads to the best overall beamforming training performance

Full textThe wireless medium is a shared and limited resource. Current wireless standards always share the medium with Half-Duplex principle: the transmission and reception of signals are done in two separate time slots or two different frequency bands. Besides, the transceiver can only transmit and receive one signal at a time. This dissertation takes an alternate approach: Instead of sharing the medium with Half-Duplex principle, the entire licensed frequency band is shared for simultaneous transmission and reception, which we call Full-Duplex. Besides, the design concept for a wideband flexible radio transceiver can process two different types of signals at a time. To approach this goal, we use an active analog radio frequency self-interference cancellation (AARFSIC) method or a combination scheme of the AARFSIC and active digital self interference cancellation in time domain (ADSICT) to cancel the strong self-interference (SI) induced by the Full-Duplex principle. Based on the Full-Duplex radio, we propose a flexible Full-Duplex Dual-Band (FDDB) OFDM radio transceiver by combining it with a Dual-Band RF front-end. Building on these, we make three main contributions: We present an active self-interference cancellation (ASIC) scheme, which can cancel both the strong one-path and multi-path SI completely, based on the combination of the AARFSIC and DSICT. Next, we introduce the design and evaluation of a Full-Duplex OFDM radio, including the analysis and qualification of the impact of the thermal noise and phase noise on the system performance. Finally, we develop a FDDB OFDM radio that can work on two separate spectrum fragments. In order to eliminate the impact of the I/Q imbalance on the FDDB radio, a simple but practical digital I/Q imbalance estimation and compensation method is presented. The system level simulation conducted with ADS and Matlab software shows that this method can effectively compensate both high and low I/Q imbalance

Full textThe analog-to-digital converter (ADC) is a central component of mixed signal systems as the interface between the analog and digital representation spaces. Its performance bounds that of the device it is integrated in. Indeed, ADC linearity is essential for maintaining in the digital space the reliability of its input signal and then that of the information it carries.Wideband digital radio receivers are particularly sensitive to ADC non-linearities. Single-tone and dual-tone dynamic range (respectively STDR and DTDR) of such systems – i.e. the abilityto process simultaneously signal components with high power ratio – are limited by the spurious free dynamic range (SFDR) and intermodulation distortion (IMD) of their internal ADC.DTDR et de STDR are key metrics for electronic warfare wideband digital radio receivers developed for radiocommunication signal processing. As a matter of fact, these equipments are employed for analyzing the tactical situation of the radiofrequency spectrum in order to support military maneuvers. Hence, signal integrity is critical. This thesis deals with the ADC linearization issue in this context. Thus, it aims to study techniques for increasing ADC SFDRand IMD for the purpose of improving dynamic ranges of electronic warfare wideband digitalr eceivers. In this dissertation, the problematic of ADC linearization is approached in two different ways.On the one hand, we consider distortion compensation using pre-filled look-up tables (LUT). Wepropose an algorithm for filling LUTs that stems from an existing method by halving the numberof coefficients required for the integral non-linearity (INL) estimation. Then, based on this new method, we develop an approach for correcting ADC dynamic non-linearities using a couple ofstatic LUTs and we present an example of algorithm for operating this method. On the other hand,we study linearization solutions that rely on behavioural modelling of ADCs using discrete-time Volterra series and its derivatives. First, we address the three fundamental issues of this approach:modelling ; model identification ; and model inversion. Then, we propose three blind linearization algorithms. Finally, we consider the implementation on field programmable gate array (FPGA) of one of them for the purpose of evaluating the relevance of real-time linearization of an ADC sampling at about 400 MHz
