Abstract:
Includes bibliographical references.
A memory is inherently subjective and personal; contained within but not confined to the mind. The recollection of any memory unveils individual and collective identity attributed to a familiar space. Subsequently, retrieving an identity from a space converts that space into 'place'; a consequence of attaching significant experiential quality against a space. The body, and thus the mind, continuously interact with the immediate surrounding spatial environment. When encountering a space of familiarity, the mind is prompted with specific memories linked to that space. Prompted memories are memories of recollection. The theory of 'Re-collective memory' is drawn upon to substantiate the interactive process between memory and space. This theory outlines personal and collective memory as an association with a particular experience, bringing oneself into direct contact with past events or places. Therefore a non-physical memory no longer remains contained within the mind but is manifested into the physical world; collective and individual identity is obtained and space is transfigured into 'place'. The research conducted is an investigation into the relationship between space and memory; how a physical, tangible space manifests a non-physical, intangible memory. Underlying aspects of memory are uncovered to establish its value as a significant design tool in landscape architecture for the acquisition of individual and collective identity in a place. My understanding of memory begins at a personal level. As a child I grew up observing the memories of my mother pertaining to a very specific town; Cathcart, Eastern Cape, South Africa. This small town will serve as the case study for investigating the relationship between memory and space. As a methodological approach, a series of ethnographic interviews were conducted with my family and community members in Cathcart. Key memory locations were then identified, exhibiting significant positive and negative place-making characteristics. An analysis of the memories led to an understanding that Cathcart is currently socially and physically divided. This is rooted in apartheid planning, where major emphasis had been placed on social and spatial segregation according to race. Post-apartheid however, the separation between spaces is still highly prevalent and discourages integration. Consequentially, precarious socio-economic issues are revealed including sanitation, housing, education and job security which continually threaten the town's existence. A weakened sense of belonging and a fervent desire for identity becomes apparent. This is perpetuated through a loss of economy and inadequate service delivery resulting from a lack of spatial and social connectedness throughout the town. These issues are typical phenomena widespread across similar small towns in South Africa. However, one observation of significant importance is that of timber collection by the local Xhosa people of Cathcart who rely on the wood for cooking, warming their homes and for constructing new dwellings. This process provides an opportunity to link memory locations aimed at decreasing socio-spatial disconnect while providing spaces with amenity to stimulate socio-economic growth. As an overarching framework, the process of timber collection will utilise strategic memory locations as spaces for design implementation. Woven together along an experiential route, these memory locations will be transformed into celebrated spectacle moments. The route seeks to reunite the town, providing opportunities to re-establish individual and collective identity. In this way, memory is used to facilitate spaces for place creation while simultaneously providing a platform upon which new memories can be created. As a model, such an approach for design could be applied to other small towns in South Africa that display similar conditions.

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the recall, mechanism for revocation of mandate by popular decision, in the way it is used in the United States. It aims to examine how this participatory mechanism can contribute to the improvement of political representation. First, the stages of the democratic process in the United States have been observed since its formation, in order to understand how the political and social dynamics of the country influence the behavior of government and the posture of citizens. Given the complexity of current societies whose practice of direct democracy proves to be nonstarter, it is through representatives that the population can exercise popular sovereignty. In a purely representative democracy, however, popular sovereignty and representation are merely fictitious as the population is kept from decision-making without being able to participate. Hence the relevance of the instruments of semi-direct democracy to correct the failures of political representation. In Brazil, there is legal provisions for plebiscite, referendum and popular initiative, but none of them presented significant practical results. There is no legal provision for recall in the Brazilian legal system, but the US model was analyzed based on its requirements and procedures. What was observed, therefore, was that its indiscriminate use poses serious risks to political stability, since the expected standard behavior is the conclusion of the mandates in the foreseen term. However, used exceptionally in cases where the representative does not play his role satisfactorily, he can serve as an important ally of the population to constrain political agents to face the administration of the public thing in a serious manner when there is a possibility to recall.

Hirn, Mueller Dana Elizabeth. "The Effects of Post-Recall Feedback: Examining Witness Recall Quantity, Accuracy, and Confidence." FIU Digital Commons, 2015. http://digitalcommons.fiu.edu/etd/2169.

Abstract:
Most eyewitness identification protocols recommend withholding feedback after an identification has been made, at least until a measure of confidence can be gathered. Although much research has examined the impact of post-identification feedback on subsequent witness behavior and confidence, research addressing the importance of post-recall feedback remains largely incomplete. The current study examined the effects of post-recall feedback and question type on subsequent witness recall, confidence, and reports of view of the crime. In line with previous eyewitness identification research, it was predicted that participants receiving confirming post-recall feedback would be more confident in their prior recall compared to participants receiving neutral, no, or disconfirming feedback. One hundred and fifty-eight participants viewed a mock crime video of a robbery followed by an interview which included both open-ended and cued questions. Participants were then given either confirming, neutral, no, or disconfirming feedback and asked about their confidence and the clarity of their view of the perpetrator. Under the pretense that the recording equipment failed, participants were interviewed again using the same question format. The second interview was followed by a series of suggestive questions. After the second interview, participants were again asked about their confidence and self-reported quality of view of the perpetrator. Participant interviews were transcribed and scored for quantity, accuracy, and consistency by two blind, independent coders. Analyses revealed that feedback had a systematic impact on confidence such that participants who received confirming feedback were more confident in the overall accuracy of their prior memory accounts than those who received neutral, no, or disconfirming feedback and participants who received neutral or no feedback were more confident in the overall accuracy of their prior memory accounts compared to those in the disconfirming feedback condition. In line with previous eyewitness identification research, there was no significant relationship between recall accuracy and reported confidence. Results from the current study can be used to inform real-world investigative interviewers by highlighting the consequences of offering post-recall feedback. Specifically, feedback can impact witness confidence irrespective of actual recall accuracy.

Abstract:
Abstract This research focuses on studying teacher-student relationships based on memories of teachers. It asks what and how those memories tell about teacher-student relationships. The work of teachers is understood as relational, and at its core are relationships to students. Body, gender, caring, emotions and power evolved as important concepts in studying the teacher-student relationships. Personal and professional aspects were intertwined in the relationships. In this study, student memories are approached via narrative research and thematic, holistic and narrative ways of analysis are applied. The memories are understood as related to the past, but above all as a result of storytelling. They are interpreted in the present context and through expectations of the future. Memories of teachers were written by 49 students of education. A group of seven female teachers recalled their own teachers together. In addition, 141 people of varying ages and educational backgrounds wrote about their teachers via a request published in Yhteishyvä magazine. The research revealed that from students’ perspectives, there can be different sides to a relationship with a particular teacher. Relationships can also change and some even continued after a student’s school years. Teacher-student relationships were seen evolve in the institutional context of school, but also outside of it. Participants recalled how particular moments became significant in their relationship with a teacher. Those moments could define their whole memory of it. It was found that teachers are constantly being observed by students, through their bodies, emotions and personal lives. It was also found that aspects of caring and power are intertwined in teacher-student relationships. Teachers can influence their students’ lives in many ways, both personally and professionally. Relationships need time, space and small enough groups of students. It must be assured that the structures of school institutions and the increasing demands on teachers’ work promote the development of teacher-student relationships. Relationships and challenges related to them need to be central in the content and curriculum of teacher education. Teachers also need to be aware of their own pasts. Dealing with one’s own memories from school and teachers is one part of the personal, professional and collective identity-work
Tiivistelmä Tämä tutkimus keskittyy tarkastelemaan opettaja-oppilassuhteita opettajia koskevien muistojen pohjalta. Tutkimuksessa kysytään mitä ja miten nuo muistot kertovat opettaja-oppilassuhteista. Opettajan työ ymmärretään suhteissa olemisena, jonka ytimessä ovat suhteet oppilaisiin. Keskeisiksi käsitteiksi opettaja-oppilassuhteen tarkasteluun muotoutuivat ruumiillisuus, sukupuoli, välittäminen, tunteet ja valta. Suhteet tulee nähdä niin henkilökohtaisina kuin ammatillisina. Tutkimuksen lähestymistapa on narratiivinen ja tutkimuksessa sovelletaan temaattisia, holistisia ja narratiivisia analyysitapoja. Muistot ymmärretään menneeseen kytkeytyvinä, mutta kertomisen kautta muotoutuvina. Muistoja tulkitaan tämänhetkisen kontekstin ja tulevaisuuden odotusten valossa. Muistojaan opettajista kirjoittivat 49 kasvatusalan opiskelijaa.

Abstract:
Johnson & Johnson (J&J) has been viewed as a role model by many organizations for its successful handling of a 1982 crisis involving cyanide-laced Tylenol capsules that resulted in seven deaths. The public relations community applauded J&J for a swift response and for promptly implementing actions to prevent a similar crisis from occurring in the future. However more recently, J&J has become a poster child for poor crisis communications amidst a flood of recalls that started in November 2009. The present study used concepts from Coombs' (2004) Situational Crisis Communication Theory (SCCT) and media framing research to develop a coding scheme for a content analysis of newspaper coverage surrounding the 1982 Tylenol recall as well as current recalls issued by J&J from November 2009 through April 2012. The samples included newspaper articles from New York Times and Chicago Tribune. Results showed that most of the stories in both samples did not evaluate J&J's operational response or reputation overall. However, when the news coverage did evaluate J&J, coverage from the 1982 sample was positive and evenly balanced between favorable and unfavorable, compared to negative and unfavorable in the current sample. Additionally, when crisis type was mentioned in the coverage, the 1982 crisis was more likely described as a victim crisis while the current crises were more likely described as an accident or preventable crisis. When the 1982 sample was examined for mentions of previous recalls there were none compared to 80.5% of the current sample mentioning a previous recall. The results support the tenets of SCCT, information giving strategies and reputation management strategies. Additionally, the results provide valuable information for crisis managers regarding the media's inclusion or, lack thereof, organizations' controlled media such as news releases.

Abstract:
Explaining false memory has been a strong resource to understand how memory works in general. More than two decades of research on false memories show that false memories are a complex phenomenon that made most of the established theories of memory insufficient. Phantom recollection is a specific part of the false memory phenomena that consists of a memory illusion in which subjects have a false recollective phenomenology that resembles true recollections. Two experiments following DRM's paradigm served to study phantom recollection in adults, manipulating variables such as Level of processing, Type of voice, Retrieval time and Repetition. The three proper instructions of a mathematical model named Conjoint Recall were applied in order to have separate measures of the phantom recollection manifestations. Ninety American and 90 Mexican university students participated. The results of the experiments disconfirm IAR explanations of phantom recollection, but confirm most of Fuzzy-trace-theory's assumptions on this phenomenon (Brainerd, Payne, Wright, and Reyna, 2003).

Abstract:
This study examined factors related to word list performance predictions made by younger and older adults. A performance prediction is an estimate made prior to being exposed to the material that is studied for a specific task. The current study examined the age differences in a sample of 59 older adults (M = 76.83 years old, SD = 8.28) and 51 younger adults (M = 21.19 years old, SD = 3.22) on performance predictions for both an immediate and delayed word recall task. Memory self-efficacy and other self-rating measures were not found to influence immediate or delayed predictions. A repeated measures ANOVA revealed that older adults improved in absolute accuracy from immediate to delayed prediction whereas younger adults became less accurate. The results suggest that all metamemory skills do not deteriorate with age, as the older adults were capable of monitoring their memory accurately based on previous performance.

Abstract:

Twitch.tv is a new phenomenon in the world of gaming and online entertainment. Advertising professionals could use Twitch.tv as a new outlet to advertise brands to their audiences. To further understand brand recall of advertisements on Twitch.tv, this thesis examined different variables such as game experience, ad placement, and ad familiarity. The Limited Capacity Model of Motivated Mediated Message Processing (LC4MP) relates to effects on viewer recall of brands in advertisements seen on Twitch.tv, as it is ultimately a new form a television and this model can help understand how its messages are processed (Lang, 2000). A 2x2 factorial design was used to determine interactions between brand familiarity and advertisement placement as well as their effects on brand recall. Game experience was used as a covariate to determine if this variable further made a difference in brand recall of advertisements on Twitch.tv.

MacAndrew, Siobhan Barbara Georgia. "The structure of recall in amnesia." Thesis, University of Warwick, 1989. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/91925/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis reports seven experiments on the nature of the functional deficit in amnesia. Experiments 1 to 3 investigate patterns of recall for amnesic subjects and matched controls to investigate a hypothesised specific deficit in recall in amnesia. No significant evidence of a recall deficit in amnesia was found. However, a difference emerged between the two groups in the analyses of the stochastic relationship between recall and recognition. This revealed that in amnesic subjects recall is approximately independent of recognition, whereas in control subjects they are positively related. The second three experiments investigated a hypothesised selective deficit of spatial memory by comparing amnesic and control memory for the locations of objects or words placed on a grid. The hypothesis that intentional encoding of locations would improve amnesic spatial memory scores resulting in a trade-off of recall and recognition of the item's identities was also examined. No significant evidence of a selective spatial memory deficit in amnesia was found, nor did intentional instructions improve amnesic spatial memory scores. There was no significant evidence of a trade-off of item and location memory in the amnesic group. A further analysis comparing control and amnesic memory for the location of items scored by lenient criteria found no significant difference between the amnesic and control scores for number of items of this type, or for recall and recognition memory of these items. Fragment and schema models have been applied to normal memory for this type of contextual material. In a final experiment, the predictions of both types of model were contrasted with each other for data on singly and multiply cued recall provided by both normal and amnesic subjects. It was found that amnesics and normal controls formed fragments representing the unrelated triads and schemas representing the related triads. Both the schema and the fragment model parameters displayed uniform patterns of impairment. Thus amnesic memory may be argued to differ from normal memory quantitatively, rather than qualitatively. The implications of these findings for theories of memory and processing in amnesia are discussed.

Abstract:
We explored the role that exogenous and endogenous competitors for attention play in infants’ abilities to encode and retain information over a 6‐month period. Sixty‐six children visited the laboratory at 15 months, and 32 returned for a second visit at 21 months. Children observed models of conventional‐ relation and enabling‐relation action sequences. Half the children were distracted by a “Mister Monkey” mechanical toy during the conventional‐relation sequence, while the other half was distracted during the enabling‐relation sequence. The Early Childhood Behavior Questionnaire indexed endogenous factors at both ages. Immediate postmodel production of target actions indexed encoding efficiency, and 6‐month production of target actions indexed long‐term recall. The exogenous distracter impacted encoding efficiency (i.e., immediate recall), but not long‐term recall. Endogenous factors (i.e., temperament) were primarily associated with long‐term recall. Of special interest was our finding that endogenous factors, especially surgency, moderated the effect of the exogenous distracter. It appears that when learning conventional‐relation sequences in the presence of exogenous distracters, surgency mobilizes attentional resources toward the learning objective; however, when learning enabling‐relation sequences under the same conditions, surgency either boosts the saliency of the distracters or boosts children’s susceptibility to them.

Presently, we can notice the sprouting of many products and brands, in many sectors of the market. This hard competition leads firms to develop new communication strategies to make the public remember the advertised products and brands. One of the most used tools in advertising is humor and, in this work, we will examine and analyze the characteristics of this option, aiming at retaining the attention of the people to whom the advertising is addressed. It is noticed that products and brands advertised using humor have higher recall in television, but this doesn`t occur in print media. The proportion of advertisements correctly remembered is also higher when humor is present. It is also noticed that the majority of people prefer advertisings with humor than the ones without it, but people don`t change their attitudes because of the presence of humor, i.e., humor is not responsible for increasing the interest of the public for the advertised product.

Abstract:
The problem of this experimental study is to determine to what extent visual information may dominate over audio information. Additionally, the experimental design addresses problems with previous research in this area and emphasizes simplified approaches to the study of channel condition effects. The study does not include investigations of learning theory or short-term memory, but processes of listening and long-term memory are incorporated into the design. A stimulus of sound effects and slides was utilized in one audio and two audio-visual channel conditions, and results showed a high recall among all subjects in all three conditions. The study concludes that channel condition has little effect at low levels of information.

Abstract:
Previous laboratory research has demonstrated an encoding deficit for schizophrenics versus nonpsychiatrically diagnosed individuals. A study was conducted to examine encoding performance of these two groups in an actual apartment setting. Participants were asked to memorize a list of household tasks. Lists were either organized or random, but with identical items . Four conditions were compared: schizophrenic/ organized, schizophrenic/random, non- diagnosed/ organized, and non-diagnosed/random. It was hypothesized that the non-diagnosed participants would recall and perform significantly more tasks from the list than would schizophrenics in both the organized and random list conditions. Recall scores were also expected to be significantly higher for the organized than random list conditions for both the schizophrenic and non-diagnosed participants. A Diagnosis x List Type interaction was expected. Results for all comparisons were non-significant.

Abstract:
This dissertation examined the relationship between the acquisition and recall of English language vocabulary. This study explored 2 different learning recall strategies to determine which approach was the quickest or more efficient way to remember vocabulary words. Previous researchers had focused on learning a second language phonetically and had not explored different instructional strategies to study the most useful or quickest way to learn a second language for adults. However, there remains an important gap in the current research regarding how to present different methods of instruction to acquire a new second language more rapidly. The purpose of this study was to determine which method was easier and quicker to assist the second language learner to recall and acquire vocabulary. The sample came from 3 different adult second language classrooms. The participants completed a pretest to assess their English word knowledge before the treatment. The participants had a timed 15-min or 30-min period to learn the cards for recall using flash cards with words only or with words and pictures. Once the period was over, the participants completed a posttest measure of language acquisition. There were no statistically significant differences in posttest scores based on method of learning, length of time for learning, or the interaction between the two. The results of the study added to the research on determining whether different instructional methods assisted an adult second language learner to acquire a second language more swiftly.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the similarities and differences between two widely-used immediate memory tasks: immediate serial recall (ISR) and immediate free recall (IFR). Until recently these two tasks were explained by separate theories, but recent researchers have encouraged greater integration by showing considerable similarities under identical list lengths (LL) and methods. Eight experiments are presented in three chapters. Chapter 2 examines strategy use in the two tasks. Participants were shown not to use LL-specific strategies in IFR (Experiment 1) or ISR (Experiment 2). Indeed, encoding strategy use was similar in both tasks: participants showed no effect of test-expectancy (Experiment 3). These findings show that participants encode ISR and IFR in similar ways, irrespective of knowledge of the LL, and that differences between the tasks are due to retrieval. Chapter 3 examines why participants tend to initiate IFR of short lists with the first word in the list. I looked at three putative mechanisms for generating the primacy effect in IFR: covert rehearsal (Experiment 4), selective attention (Experiment 5), and temporal distinctiveness (Experiment 6). I found that no manipulation abolished primacy. Chapter 4 showed similar effects of modality (Experiment 7) and temporal isolation (Experiment 8) on ISR and IFR when examined under the same methodology. In summary, this thesis has shown that when LL is equated ISR and IFR are more similar than previously thought. Due to the growing evidence that both tasks are underpinned by common memory mechanisms I conclude that there is a need for greater theoretical integration between the two tasks. I relate my results to different theories of ISR and IFR, and provide a verbal description of a preferred explanation of the data.

Abstract:
To minimize devastation and maximize opportunities provided during a corporate crisis, public relations professionals should collaborate with lawyers on crisis response strategies. The purpose of this study was to examine coverage of the Ford Motor Co. and Bridgestone/ Firestone, Inc. tire recall from May 2000 through May 2001 to determine whether there was a difference between the strategies used by each company and whether Ford Motor Co. and Bridgestone/Firestone, Inc. used more traditional public relations than traditional legal strategies during each crisis stage.A content analysis was conducted of articles covering the crisis from The Wall Street Journal and The Washington Post containing sentences attributed to each company's spokespeople. The search yielded 234 usable articles with 2,192 sentences.Coders identified strategies as traditional public relations, traditional legal, mixed, diversionary, or other. A chi-square was used to test the hypotheses. The first hypothesis, which said there would be no significant difference between strategies used by each company, was rejected. The second and third hypotheses, which said Ford Motor Co. and Bridgestone/Firestone, Inc. used significantly more traditional public relations than traditional legal strategies during each time period, were accepted.

Abstract:
Throughout a typical day, people complete myriad tasks and activities such as locking the front door as they run errands around the neighborhood, preparing meals and drinks, taking care of family, pets, plants, and so on. In managing the progress of these everyday activities, people may nd themselves needing to recall what they have already done. In this research, I explored how to design an unobtrusive memory aid that reduces the cost of distraction and general multitasking by fluidly supporting memory recall of repetitive actions. I built the Cook's Collage as one example system that captures close-range photographs of ingredient additions during everyday home cooking to display as an ongoing visual summary of the open-ended activity. I contribute this augmentative technology as a memory aid in contrast to more directive, obtrusive, and yet constrained systems that seek to remove human error through automation and scripted guidance. I explored how to evaluate memory augmentation by simulating real-life situations of multitasking and interruptions that distracted cooks participating in my experimental study. From examining their behavior and attitudes with and without the Cook's Collage, I demonstrated that 1) Visually summarizing activities by capturing items used within the activity in the same physical surroundings can provide sufficient context in recalling memory for actions, 2) User interaction with accurate memory support that complements and supplements rather than interferes with memory practices, activity constraints, and environmental surroundings can effectively augment memory recall, and 3) Barriers to using provided memory support can include unawareness of memory need and predilection to own memory ability and routine.

Amin, Md Shahnoor. "Developing a Recall Mitigation Framework for Complex Systems." Thesis, The George Washington University, 2018. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10689922.

Full text
Abstract:

A product is recalled when it is deemed to pose a public safety hazard. As systems become more complex, identifying what factors influence recalls becomes increasingly important for engineering managers and systems engineers. With this in mind, this research endeavor highlights a novel safety framework that assists engineering teams in identifying recall risk factors early in the systems engineering process. The framework is applicable to complex systems, which usually have several stakeholders with requirements, and their needs are to be satisficed. Existing system engineering tools such as Failure Mode and Effects Analysis and Fault-tree Analysis are incorporated to identify risks. Five sequential activity phases are integral to the framework: Stakeholder Identification, Data Acquisition, Statistical Analysis, Safety Analysis, and Risk Review. The framework is especially useful in identifying and evaluating factors that could be associated with recalls prior to the next system design revision. For example, the framework can be applied by the engineering team during the redesign phase of a vehicle model (e.g. 2018 Toyota Camry), using historical data from the previous generation (e.g. 2011 Toyota Camry). Validation of the recall mitigation framework is highlighted through a case study involving the engineering of a new vehicle model in the automotive industry. Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) of complex systems like cars issue recalls whenever the vehicle is perceived to have defects impacting public safety, whether due to airbag issues or excessive emissions. For over four years (2010–2013), the influence of recall factors for each automaker was analyzed. An additional, more qualitative, case study was performed of Lithium-Ion battery recalls, based on learnings from Sony’s woes in 2006. These case studies further validate the framework. Utilizing the framework within a new project environment can greatly assist engineering managers and their teams in identifying recall risk factors early in the systems engineering lifecycle.

Abstract:
Some computer users employ large displays, 6 or more monitors, in order to view a large amount of data on a single desktop at one time.  This layout can be useful when the user is performing tasks in which they must view several different information sources at a time.  For example, a user may be writing a paper in which they may be simultaneously typing a document, reading another paper, and view a spreadsheet.  After the task is completed, the user may close all of the windows, however sometime later they may want to view a document associated with that task.  A possible scenario is for the user to know that they were viewing an important document in their top left monitor, but they cannot remember which document.  SpatialHistory looks to allow a user to recall which windows and documents were open at a certain time spatially.  The user may query a particular region of a large display and SpatialHistory will report the windows that were open in that area.  Through a user study, we conclude that i) some users organize their large displays in a spatial manner placing certain types of documents and windows in certain places and that ii) our tool has the potential to help users recall previously viewed windows based on a spatial memory of their desktop.

Abstract:
Omission errors made by 186 older adults were compared to those of 96 younger adults on a nonverbal delayed recall task, the Wechsler Memory Scale - Revised Visual Reproduction II subtest (WMS - R VR 2, Wechsler, 1987). Older subjects failed to reproduce both figures A and B significantly more often than younger subjects, with the greatest between--group variance occurring on figure A. The results suggest that age-related declines in nonverbal memory and delayed recall may have contributed to this pattern of performance. Furthermore, inattention and retroactive interference effects may have also been particularly relevant. Suggestions are made for subsequent research to rule out order effects by reordering the presentation of VR2 subtest stimuli and employing other measures of visual memory, visuoconstructive performance, and interference. Further understanding of older adults' performance on the WMS - R Visual Reproduction subtest would prove valuable, since it is used extensively in a variety of research and clinical settings.

Full text
Abstract:
There is an age-shift in neurotypical children: younger children tend to remember information in a verbatim manner so they store item-specific surface characteristics; between nine and ten children engage in gist recall where they store meanings of presented information. The aim of the present study was to explore false memory in children with Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD), as some research suggests that they develop gist recall at a later age than neurotypical children. We are also interested in the role of working memory. One approach to understanding false memory creation is activation-monitoring (AM) theory. Working memory can play a role during both the activation (encoding) phase, as well as during the monitoring retrieval phase. When working memory is overloaded or suboptimal, source monitoring is compromised at the encoding phase. In this study, we tested high-functioning children with ASD on working memory capacity. In addition, simple sentences were presented to be recalled, each one followed by a short word list that contained a thematically related distractor item. If a child used gist memory to recall the sentence, they would likely substitute the target (e.g., rabbit) word with the distractor (e.g., bunny). However, if they depended on verbatim recall, the distractor would not affect sentence recall performance. Children with lower working memory scores were more likely to incorrect answers to gist questions than those with high working memory. These findings have important implications for everyday social functioning. Though debatable, working memory impairments may encourage false memories in children with ASD.
