Abstract:
Abstract For a maximal torus in a quasi-split semi-simple simply-connected group over a local field of characteristic 0, Langlands and Shelstad constructed a cohomological invariant called the splitting invariant, which is an important component of their endoscopic transfer factors. We study this invari- ant in the case of a split real group and prove a decomposition theorem which expresses this invariant for a general torus as a product of the corresponding invariants for simple tori. We also show how this reduction formula allows for the comparison of splitting invariants between different tori in the given real group.

Abstract:
In this thesis we study real structures on compact toric varieties. After proving that their number (up to conjugation) is finite, we limit ourselves to toric real structures i. E. , real structures that normalize the action of the torus and define equivalencies between them. Then we calculate an upper bound of the number of non-equivalent such structures. We list explicitely the groups generated by toric real structures in dimension 2 and 3 and determine some minimal models for surfaces. We are also interested in the real toric variety. We prove that it is pathwise-connected when it is non-empty and give the complete list of its topological types in case of surfaces and fano-threefolds. We end this work by the application to the toric threefolds equipped with their canonical real structures of a Kollar's conjecture:Is a real hyperbolic connected treefold the real part of some complex projective rational variety ?

Abstract:
The essay makes a case for the use of the Nobel Prize-winning (1993) author Toni Morrison's novel The Bluest Eye (1970) in the English language classroom. The essay argues that the novel is an excellent reading choice and to what is appropriate according to the learning goals stated in Gy11's course syllabus English 6. Since the course English 6 syllabus is new some aspects different from previous course syllabus English B are mentioned by way of comparison.  In order to develop the arguments for using the novel, different perspectives of reading and the learning process are discussed and how they match the curriculum Gy 11. Some points about how Morrison has managed to voice the former unspoken experiences of African American society are made to make it clear why reading The Bluest Eye is such a superb text in relation to the learning goals that are outlined in Gy11.The essay focuses mainly on mother - daughter relationships because most pupils will easily relate to this theme since they have experiences of this relation themselves, and therefore they will find it easy to find issues to discuss after reading the novel.

The main goal of this work is to study global analytic regularity properties of certain differential operators acting in the torus. A main tool that will be used to achieve our goals are the partial Fourier series, which allow us to characterize objects such as periodic distributions or periodic real analytic functions in terms of the growth of their partial Fourier coefficients

Walker, Kimberley. "Clearing the Brownfields: Offsetting the Risks to Sustainable Development of Contaminated Land." Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/37477.

Full text
Abstract:
This research develops eight recommendations for amendments to key Ontario legislation affecting Brownfield redevelopment that, if implemented, will reduce the liability and risk associated with the development of contaminated land and benefit stakeholders, such as, municipalities and developers. Utilizing the methodology of law and economics, this research examines the legal landscape in Ontario and expands the dialogue regarding the risks of developing contaminated land. Through this examination, this research uncovers the origins of the risks of Brownfield redevelopment and extrapolates recommendations for amendments to legislation and policy that balance the liability of Brownfield redevelopment with the protection of the environment. Recent developments in environmental law appear to increase environmental protection, but actually limit Brownfield redevelopment in Ontario by increasing liability and costs. The polluter pays principle that has been entrenched in Canadian law has governed the law in respect of contaminated lands for decades. However, as society evolves, the common law is forced to re-evaluate environmental protection in the face of contaminated lands. This evolution of the law is an attempt to intervene to correct a market failure that exists with respect to contaminated lands. The increased liability associated with Brownfield redevelopment translates into heightened costs to redevelop the land, which also severely threatens environmental justice in Ontario. The recommendations in this research will benefit stakeholders, the public, and the environment. With respect to stakeholders, it will be of assistance to municipalities, cities, developers, corporations, secured lenders, mortgage insurers and the government. The risks associated with Brownfield redevelopment can be offset by the recommended corrections to legislation regarding liability and stronger policies that create accessible programs and incentives to promote just, innovative, and sustainable redevelopment.

Abstract:
AbstractThis chapter describes the role of land rights and tenure security in war-affected scenarios. Because armed conflict and tenure security both operate in the domain of spatial relationships between people, the connection between them is acutely intimate. War-torn land tenure scenarios are unique in their combination of a weakened and chaotic formal (statutory) system, vigorous but very fluid informal tenure activity, along with the presence of political demands regarding land, and international actors that have a large interest and influence in the direction of recovery. While this combination carries risks, it also represents real opportunity for practical and policy reform in support of tenure security and sustainability. Subsequent to a review of the land tenure security issues that emerge prior to, during, and after armed conflict, the chapter describes how certain forms of post-conflict land rights recovery can support tenure security and contribute to long-term sustainability. The chapter presents the case of Afghanistan to highlight the issues of conflict and tenure security.

Abstract:
AbstractNationalism remains a compelling ideological force and is the most important marker of collective identity in modern times. It inspires the idea of the nation by forging strong bonds of solidarity through the invocation of pre-existing ethnic, cultural or religious loyalties. Recurrent political conflicts in Iran have often been driven by nationalist ideologies. This chapter demonstrates the central role of the rivalry between secular and religious nationalisms in shaping Iran’s national identity. The interplay of these two nationalisms in the country has left national identity torn between modernity and tradition for more than a century. Rather than a clear break, however, what distinguishes the two nationalist persuasions are differences in the degree of religious or secular overtones respectively: secular nationalists have drawn on underlying religious support, while blatantly religious stances have had to adjust themselves to the demands of a modern secular state. Both of these nationalisms have tended to conceal the real diversity of political interests, but thus far they have failed to build an inclusive and secure national identity for Iran, leading to political instability and crisis.

Abstract:
This article aims to explore the intertextual relationships between Dante’s Divine Comedy and three pieces of creative writing: Chariklia Martalas’ “A Mad Flight into Inferno Once Again”, Thalén Rogers’ “The Loadstone” and Helena van Urk’s “The Storm”. By employing a comparative analysis, I argue that, even though decontextualised, the Comedy still represents a fruitful aesthetic source for representing particularly war-torn and violent contexts such as South Africa during apartheid and colonialism. I explore how the authors, through intertextual references and parodic rewriting, both re-configure the poem and challenge some of the Comedy’s moral assumptions and the idea of (divine) justice. I aim to show how Dantean Hell, far from being an otherworldly realm, is in fact transfigured and adapted to effectively represent (and make sense of) a historical context. In other words, through an intertextual analysis, this analysis tries to understand why and how the Comedy resonates with the South African socio-political (and literary) context.

Abstract:
The historical development of Istanbul’s gecekondu areas (informally-originated neighborhoods) can be broadly interpreted as a progression toward the center and subsequent re-peripheralization, both in sociopolitical terms and in actual urban geography. While Istanbul emerged in recent decades as a magnet for transnational migrants and for capitals pouring into the debt-fueled real estate sector, many such neighborhoods have been targeted by speculative socio-spatial restructuring projects, while also absorbing much of the migratory influx. The recent economic crisis plunged these urban redevelopment sites into a deadlock, generating a fragmented urbanscape in which multiple layers of uncertainty, suspension, and informalization overlap and interact. This chapter explores the unfolding transformation in Fikirtepe, the largest ongoing redevelopment project in the city, which has seen its social and urban fabric torn apart by the redevelopment and is currently stuck in an unstable but protracted limbo. As Fikirtepe becomes “unlivable” for many of its long-time dwellers, a number of migrants are moving in, etching out a living: a collateral effect of redevelopment failure, creating a space of opportunity for new disenfranchised populations with varied backgrounds, legal statuses, and life trajectories. Within this setting, this chapter analyzes the periphery as a condition that is articulated, reproduced, and transformed through embodied practices. With their practices, narratives, and trajectories, those who inhabit such botched urban transformation embody different layers of the periphery, contributing to shape an understanding of it as a perspectival condition with a polyvalent spatiality and temporality.

Abstract:
This chapter describes the “real world” of torts by describing patterns in the ways in which tort cases are litigated—or not. Key patterns include the high rates at which injured persons choose to lump it rather than bringing a claim; the ways in which injuries are transformed into tort claims through a process of naming, blaming, and claiming; significant attrition from the formal process (the dispute pyramid); increasingly infrequent trials, a trend known as the vanishing trial. The chapter describes the motives of litigants for bringing and defending tort cases, the ways in which attorneys and litigants make decisions about settlement, and the role of insurance throughout the process.

Abstract:
Recently meshes of engineering objects are easily acquired by 3D laser or high energy X-ray CT scanning systems, and these meshes are widely used in product developments. To effectively use scanned meshes in engineering applications, such as inspection, CAD model reconstruction, and convergent-type CAE, we need to segment meshes and extract desirable regions and their approximating surfaces as preprocessing. Engineering objects are commonly represented as a set of analytic surfaces, such as planes, cylinders, spheres, cones, and tori. Therefore, the mesh surface of engineering objects needs to be approximated as a set of analytic surfaces. Moreover, a mesh surface should be approximated with a minimum number of analytic surfaces and their approximating error should be minimized as a result of segmentation. We call the segmentation that satisfies these two conditions the optimal segmentation as proposed in [1]. However, optimal segmentation algorithms need a long calculation time. Today’s high energy X-ray CT scanning systems generate large meshes with millions of triangles from objects including hundreds of regions. Thus, computationally expensive algorithms, such as [1], cannot be directly applied to these large and complex meshes from the aspect of efficiency. In this paper we propose an efficient new quasi-optimal mesh segmentation algorithm via region growing and region merging. First, our algorithm robustly and accurately estimates mesh principal curvatures using the local surface fitting by two-pass algorithm. Second, it uses the curvatures to appropriately create seed regions, and then it quickly grows each seed region and extracts grown regions and their approximating analytic surfaces from a whole mesh. Finally, our region merging algorithm efficiently merges extracted regions in order to minimize the number of regions while keeping the user specified tolerances of the surface fitting, and it results in quasi-optimal segmentation. We demonstrate the performance of our algorithm with scanned meshes acquired from real engineering objects by 3D laser and X-ray CT scanning systems.

Abstract:
The enhancement of the towers of the Imperia coastThe complex structure of the Ligurian territory has found a precise correspondence in the development of the defensive structures. If the main cities were able to provide themselves with “closed” defence systems (the most important of which –the Genoese city walls– are second only in size to the Chinese Wall), the smaller cities and the poorly built areas were equipped with a real “network” of widespread and punctual defensive elements. These are the defence towers and watchtowers that were built mainly to face the Saracen invasions and were strongly related to the morphology of the territory. These are now a vast heritage that is in danger of being lost because of the urban transformations that have characterized the last decades, that have changed the territory and that have led to radical transformations of the artifacts that still exist today. The objective of protecting the heritage of the towers present in the Ligurian territory –and in particular on the coasts of Imperia– was the vector that suggested the research conducted at a multidisciplinary level and that led to the census and knowledge of what remains of this complex system of defense spread over the Ligurian coastal territory. The elaboration of a detailed census of the existing artefacts has allowed the analysis of the recurrent typologies, the study of the connections with the geography, and has brought to the knowledge of the state of conservation of this singular architectural patrimony that still today connotes suggestive ambits of the Ligurian territory and represents a great potential for the development of tourist and cultural activities. Subsequently, a number of projects have been developed which, starting from the dissemination of knowledge of the heritage in question, have as their objective the enhancement of it, identifying new possible uses of individual artifacts within a landscape system of collective interest.

Abstract:
The paraxial optics of astigmatic human eyes is covered by the optics of systems with obliquely crossed toric surfaces. For these systems, the dioptric parameters in terms of the 2 X 2 dioptric matrices are: the equivalent power matrix P e (which may be asymmetric), the back vertex power matrix P v , and the neutralizing or front vertex power matrix P n .1,2 For statistical considerations where thickness is taken into account (as opposed to a thin lens model), one might compute a mean P e , P v , and P n (10 known parameters).3,4 Since the means are statistical calculations and not optical calculations, the question then arises as to whether any real system of toric surfaces has the same dioptric parameters as these means. I'll refer to such matching systems as completely dioptrically equivalent (CDE) systems. These systems might be models of astigmatic eyes or general systems consisting of toric surfaces.
