Abstract:
Methods and models of optimization of solutions under many criteria are considered, which are conditioned by modern tasks to improve the operation of supply chains and logistics systems. Attention is paid to their specifics in relation to the tasks of organizing transport supply support. The anomalous phenomena of "blindness" to the indicators of individual particular criteria and the phenomena of "blocking" the choice of alternatives when optimizing such systems are analyzed. Special modifications of traditional selection criteria for optimization are presented, allowing to eliminate these phenomena in order to more effectively adapt the selected best solution to the preferences of the decision-maker. The analysis of filtering possibilities of the initially specified alternatives is given so that optimization procedures can be implemented in real time. Meets the requirements of the federal state educational standards of higher education of the latest generation. For students of institutions of higher education. It can be useful for graduate students, logisticians and entrepreneurs who want to organize their business more efficiently.

Abstract:
This chapter considers the notion of news time. News producers, researchers, and observers agree that American life has become busier, with little time to spare. The time crunch seems to have led reporters and editors to focus on the real present instead of the modern tasks of gathering background, spotting trends, or ferreting out future problems. It is argued that the commitment to modern time made news producers resistant to new kinds of information practices and options for conceiving of time. The emergence of other media has been an important element in how the press became entrenched in its version of modern time. The main alternative to newspapers appeared at midcentury: television, a medium that broadcasts in real time and opens the possibility of a return to the realist present.

Prado, Raquel. Multistate models for mental fatigue. Edited by Anthony O'Hagan and Mike West. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780198703174.013.29.

Full text
Abstract:
This article discusses the use of structured, multivariate Bayesian dynamic models in the analysis of experimental data involving large-scale electroencephalography (EEG) signals or time series generated on individuals subject to tasks inducing mental fatigue. It first provides an overview of the goals and challenges in the analysis of brain signals, using the EEG case as example, before describing the development and application of novel time-varying autoregressive and regime switching models, which incorporate relevant prior information via structured priors and fitted using novel, customized Bayesian computational methods. In the experiment, a subject was asked to perform simple arithmetic operations for a period of three hours. Prior to the experiment, the subject was confirmed to be alert. After the experiment ended, the subject was fatigued. The study demonstrates that Bayesian analysis is useful for real time detection of cognitive fatigue.

Abstract:
This article focuses on the use of Bayesian statistical methods in audio and music processing in the context of an application to multipitch audio and determining a musical ‘score’ representation that includes pitch and time duration summary for a musical extract (the so-called ‘piano-roll’ representation of music). It first provides an overview of mainstream applications of audio signal processing, the properties of musical audio, superposition and how to address it using the Bayesian approach, and the principal challenges facing audio processing. It then considers the fundamental audio processing tasks before discussing a range of Bayesian hierarchical models involving both time and frequency domain dynamic models. It shows that Bayesian analysis is applicable in audio signal processing in real environments where acoustical conditions and sound sources are highly variable, yet audio signals possess strong statistical structure.

Manohar, Sanjay, Valerie Bonnelle, and Masud Husain. Neurological Disorders of Attention. Edited by Anna C. (Kia) Nobre and Sabine Kastner. Oxford University Press, 2014. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199675111.013.027.

Full text
Abstract:
Attention deficits are a frequent and particularly disabling consequence of many neurological disorders, from patients with focal brain lesions through to individuals with traumatic brain injury or neurodegenerative conditions, such as Parkinson’s disease. They are often associated with apparent confusion, fatigue, irritability, and increased time and effort to perform even simple everyday tasks, and constitute a real challenge for rehabilitation. In many cases, attention deficits may be crucial factors underlying failures of memory and higher cognitive functions, contributing to difficulties in resuming previous activities and independent daily living. Here the authors first consider four aspects of attention—selective, sustained, executive, and divided—together with brain regions and networks considered to underpin normal attention and disorders of attention. The authors focus on focal brain lesions, traumatic brain injury and Parkinson’s disease as important examples illustrating the effects of different brain pathologies on attention function.

Gayer, Laurent. The Sunday Fighter. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190656546.003.0005.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter by Laurent Gayer examines one part-time fighter or ‘intermittent combatant’ in the Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM) in 2013. The case of “Iqbal” both updates existing accounts of an older vanguard of MQM militants, and offers a window onto ways violence may serve as a form of labor exchange in Karachi neighborhoods. Gayer characterizes militancy as a type of ‘dirty work’ that includes collecting extortion money, land grabbing, creating public disturbances and fighting enemy groups when necessary. Whilst Iqbal joined the MQM to access opportunities for labor and reward, as a non-Mohajir he was relegated to the least appealing tasks of MQM militancy. Iqbal strategizes to avoid rather than embrace becoming a killer. Gayer elaborates on ways violence is intrinsic to and regulates political conduct in a compelling account of how one young man gains a sense of purpose and agency in a real and imagined battlefield, by living life on the edge—but not too far.

Davenport, Thomas H., and Steven M. Miller. Working with AI. The MIT Press, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.7551/mitpress/14453.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Two management and technology experts show that AI is not a job destroyer, exploring worker-AI collaboration in real-world work settings. This book breaks through both the hype and the doom-and-gloom surrounding automation and the deployment of artificial intelligence-enabled—“smart”—systems at work. Management and technology experts Thomas Davenport and Steven Miller show that, contrary to widespread predictions, prescriptions, and denunciations, AI is not primarily a job destroyer. Rather, AI changes the way we work—by taking over some tasks but not entire jobs, freeing people to do other, more important and more challenging work. By offering detailed, real-world case studies of AI-augmented jobs in settings that range from finance to the factory floor, Davenport and Miller also show that AI in the workplace is not the stuff of futuristic speculation. It is happening now to many companies and workers. These cases include a digital system for life insurance underwriting that analyzes applications and third-party data in real time, allowing human underwriters to focus on more complex cases; an intelligent telemedicine platform with a chat-based interface; a machine learning-system that identifies impending train maintenance issues by analyzing diesel fuel samples; and Flippy, a robotic assistant for fast food preparation. For each one, Davenport and Miller describe in detail the work context for the system, interviewing job incumbents, managers, and technology vendors. Short “insight” chapters draw out common themes and consider the implications of human collaboration with smart systems.

Amann, Edmund, Carlos R. Azzoni, and Werner Baer, eds. The Oxford Handbook of the Brazilian Economy. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780190499983.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Brazil constitutes a globally vital but troubled economy. It accounts for the largest GDP in Latin America and ranks among the world’s largest exporters of critical commodities including iron ore, soya, coffee, and beef. In recent years Brazil’s global economic importance has been magnified by a surge in both outward and inward foreign direct investment. This has served to further internationalize what has been historically a relatively closed economy. The purpose of this Handbook is to offer real insight into the Brazil’s economic development in contemporary context, understanding its most salient characteristics and analyzing its structural features across various dimensions. At a more granular level, this volume accomplishes the following tasks. First, it provides an understanding of the economy’s evolution over time and the connection of its current characteristics to this evolution. Second, it analyzes Brazil’s broader place in the global economy, and considers the ways in which this role has changed, and is likely to change, over coming years. Third, reflecting contemporary concerns, the volume offers an understanding, not only of how one of the world’s key economies has developed and transformed itself, but also of the ways in which this process has yet to be completed. The volume thus analyzes the current challenges facing the Brazilian economy and the kinds of issues that need to be tackled for these to be addressed.

Full text
Abstract:
In the publication, the basics of the methodology for analyzing investment projects in the real sector of the economy are presented in an accessible way and in a brief form. The main purpose of the manual is a consistent explanation of the rules used in international practice. These rules, which form the essence of the methodology for analyzing investment projects, are quite natural and could be rediscovered by anyone who has faced such a task and is trying to solve it competently. At the same time, it makes no sense to spend efforts on "inventing a bicycle" if you can apply the experience of those who have already successfully solved these problems, understanding the logic of their actions and checking its compliance with their goals. The manual, according to the authors, could be useful for a wide range of interested readers, for example, for those who want to start their own business or just deal with modern approaches to the fashionable concepts of "real investments", "investment projects", "risk assessment", as well as in-depth study of related disciplines.

Ungemah, Joe. Punching the Clock. Oxford University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190061241.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Punching the Clock takes the best of psychological science to explore whether humans will effectively adapt to the gig economy and the Future of Work. Although the world of work is changing at unprecedented speed, the drives and needs of workers have not. Technology in the form of artificial intelligence and robotic process automation continues to transform jobs, taking away routine tasks from workers, both cognitive and physical alike. Work is broken down into smaller and smaller packets that can be seamlessly reintegrated into broader work products. Workers no longer need to be full-time employees or even reside on the same continent. Rather, tenuous relationships with contractors, freelancers, volunteers, or other third parties have become the norm, using talent platforms to find and complete work. Yet, inside the minds of workers, the needs and biases that govern behavior continue as if nothing has happened. Like any other social environment, workplaces key into deep psychological processes that have developed over millennia and dictate with whom and how workers interact. Psychologists working across disciplines have amassed a great deal of insight about the human psyche but have not always been adept at articulating the practical implications of this insight, let alone how the human psyche will likely react to the gig economy. This book fills this void in knowledge by explaining what is really going on in the minds of coworkers, bringing this to life with a few surprising stories from the real world. Unlike the external world, the human psyche is a relative constant, which raises questions about just how much of the Future of Work can be realized without breaking down the social fabric of the workplace.

Vance, Jim. Triathlon 2.0. Human Kinetics, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9781718219298.

Full text
Abstract:
Serious triathletes may be the most tech-savvy of all athletes. You have the latest devices and know that data to improve your performance are at hand, but putting it all together can be a daunting, confusing task. Triathlete, coach, researcher, and author Jim Vance maintains that, despite access to the relevant information, most triathletes start a race undertrained or overtrained. That's why he's developed Triathlon 2.0: Data-Driven Performance Training, the first program to take advantage of the latest science and technology. Triathlon 2.0 examines the sport's most popular devices, including cycling power meters, GPS trackers, and heart rate monitors. Capture the most accurate readings, learn what they mean, and, just as important, what they don't. Then, put the numbers to work for you, translating your data into a comprehensive program based on your performance needs and triathlon goals. With Triathlon 2.0, you will learn these skills: • Establish and identify optimal aerobic fitness base. • Determine the exact number of intervals for the most effective training and quickest recovery. • Identify performance markers to track training results. • Develop a tapering plan for peak performance. • Monitor pace and progress in real time. If you're serious about maximizing performance, then turn to the only program built around your personal performance data. With Triathlon 2.0, the power and plan are in your hands.
