Abstract:
This body of work operates at the border between fashion and performance, with the intention to explore the performativity of body, inrelation to forms of dress. The work presented in this thesis sets out to examine the ways the performed act of making may inform theoutcome through designing new activities of getting dressed as producers for dress, while questioning the static systems of makingdress that develops form mainly with an approximation of a bodily form. The work is not about dance, it is not about theatre, it is not about choreography. This work is about the activity of getting dressed andwhat potential knowledge in dress that may be extracted from simply shifting the established order of the relationship between bodyand dress. However, from a methodological point of view, the work is developed through choreography and performance in relation toarranged space as tools to design the activities, and these may well be viewed as a danced or theatrical and dramaturgical play of body, motion, material and dress. These aspects are part of the outcome that suggests not only new formal relationships between body and dress and new methods formaking dress, but also new ways of looking at, and consuming the art of dress.

Abstract:
The incorporation of functional ingredients on breading products has grown very much lately, because of the preoccupation with the consumers\' health. The linseed has awakened the interest by its high level of fiber, lignin, omega-3 and antioxidants compounds. The objective of the present work is evaluate the ionizing radiation effect of 60Co on the physical-chemical, sensorial and microbiological characteristics of bread with addition of different concentration of brown linseed. There were elaborated 3 types of bread: French roll, form bread prepared with the mixture and form bread produced with conventional ingredients. It was added smashed brown linseed on the bread dough, with concentrations of 8% and 12%. After the preparation, the three kinds of bread packed with polypropylene packages and taken to the IPEN/USP (Institute of Nuclear Energetic Research/University of São Paulo) and irradiated with doses of 6, 8 and 10 kGy. Treatments were elaborated without the addition of linseed and without irradiation, for control, totalizing 12 distinct treatments, to each bread formula tested. Chemical analyses were made (centesimal composition, anti-nutritional compounds, anti-oxidant activity, glycemic index, fat acids, complex B vitamins and minerals); physical analyses (cooking index, volume, color and water activity); sensorial analyses (preference tests and Descriptive Quantitative Analysis - ADQ); microbiological analysis and a survey about irradiated products. It could be seen that the addition of linseed was efficient to increase the level of alimentary fiber and the level of lipids on the 3 bread formula. The three kinds of bread that received the linseed addition and that were not irradiated presented increase on the level of total phenolic; however, when the samples which received the linseed addition were submitted to the irradiation process, it could be noticed the decrease of the antioxidant capacity. There was an increase on the level of omega-3, depending on the percentage of linseed added to the bread. The linseed addition was effective to raise the level of potassium, phosphorus and magnesium. But, the irradiation decrease the level of vitamin B1 and vitamin B6 of the three kinds of bread. The irradiation did not influence the quality of the obtained bread. The sample tasters, not trained, accepted the bread independently of the doses of applied radiation. The ADQ test evidenced that the sensorial characteristics of the samples depend on the ingredient variation used on the formulas and on the radiation. The irradiated samples presented mold counting considerably lower than the non-irradiated samples, which increased the shelf-life of those products. The survey reveals that the majority of the people interviewed has little or any knowledge about radiation and believe that the irradiation can generate some kind of harm for human beings. Therefore, the bread production enriched with mashed linseed and submitted to gamma radiation is promising, given that the chemical and sensorial properties were considered satisfactory, besides the increasing of the shelf-time

Tian, Feng Sabrina. "Is Auckland ready for Chinese travellers?" Click here to access this resource online, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10292/377.

Full text
Abstract:
The Chinese tourists market has become the 4th largest inbound market for New Zealand in 2007; it also ranks 6th in terms of expenditure. Chinese visitors spent a total of NZ $352 million to the year December 2006, an average of NZ $3,340 per person (Ministry of Tourism, 2006). The latest statistics released from New Zealand Tourism Research Council show that 122,045 Chinese visited New Zealand by the year ended January 2008. These crucial statistics – market size, length of stay and average spend – indicate the necessity for the New Zealand tourism industry to understand and provide for Chinese expectations and requirements. Auckland is New Zealand's key gateway, and it is vital that Auckland provides a first good impression for the rest of country. Chinese travellers visit New Zealand with great desire and expectations of experiencing an exotic land. They expect Auckland, as the biggest city in New Zealand, to provide them with a memorable city experience in a developed country. The purpose of this research is to study Chinese tourists' expectations and travel experiences, with a particular focus on investigating whether Auckland can provide suitable services and experiences which match their requirements and expectations. The research will build on the study by Bull (1991) and Ryan (1995), which looked at supply demand relationships and at the tourism industry attempts to balance the supply with the actual demands. It will also build on work by Zhao (2006) and Qu (2006) which explored the dimensions of Chinese demand and distribution channel factors at both origin and destination. The goal is to establish which factors are adequate or inadequate. A synthesis of the demand supply situation will enable the development of recommendations. It is envisage that these recommendations could be adopted by local government and the tourism industry, either as actions or as improvements to policy. With regards to the purpose of this research, a qualitative method was decided as the most relevant approach. Qualitative methods are useful for revealing and understanding what lies are behind any phenomenon about which little is known. Grounded theory is a qualitative research method that was developed for the purpose of studying a social phenomenon, and to generate a theory relating to a particular situation (Strauss & Corbin, 1994). The historical bases of the grounded theory approach matches the aim of this research, namely to reveal the relationships between tourists and the tourism industry and to gain a better understanding of Chinese tourists' expectation and satisfaction, and the level of the service which the Auckland tourism industry provides to Chinese travellers needs to match the Chinese market and requirements of travellers. The interviews were conducted with both Chinese travellers and the Auckland tourism industry, including hotel managers, restaurant managers, gift/souvenirs shop assistants, tour guides, and so on. The research shows Auckland is not ready for Chinese market yet. This result comes from three aspects: firstly, most Chinese tourists do not have clear requirements or expectations of Auckland before they come to New Zealand. This is mainly because of the limited promotional materials available in China about Auckland. Secondly, Chinese tourists do not have many opportunities to get to know Auckland's attractions and activities after they arrive in Auckland. Auckland city is New Zealand's most popular urban tourism destination in terms of population and gateway function provides tourism facilities and services to Chinese tourists. However, the findings highlighted most Chinese tourists found Auckland's tourism attractions to be unattractive to them due to the language barrier and itinerary issues. Thirdly, the research also found Chinese tourists have been driven away due to lack of hotel accommodations in Auckland, especially in the shoulder or high seasons. Auckland's accommodation facilities are facing a challenge. The increasing domestic and international visitors' numbers and insufficient hotel accommodations will be the major problem for Auckland for the next decade. Most of the Chinese tourists who were interviewed expressed their hope of knowing more about Auckland, however, these hopes will go unrealised until the city provides better attractions and more services for them.

Abstract:
Introduction Trauma and emergencies contribute to the quadruple burden of disease in South Africa and being prepared for an emergency requires rapid access to emergency equipment, drugs and emergency trolleys to optimally manage an emergency. This is the first descriptive study looking specifically at essential emergency equipment, drugs and the emergency trolley required for the provision of optimal emergency care at Community Health Centres (CHCs) in the Western Cape Metropole. Aims and Objectives The aim of the study was to evaluate whether eight 24 hour emergency units at CHCs in the Western Cape Metropole had the appropriate and essential emergency equipment, drugs and emergency trolleys necessary for the delivery of optimal emergency care, using the Emergency Medicine Society of South Africa (EMSSA) guidelines as the audit tool. Objectives included: 1. To assess availability of essential emergency equipment 2. To assess availability of essential emergency drugs 3. To assess the functionality of existing emergency trolleys Methodology EMSSA guidelines were used as the evaluation audit tool to perform a survey of emergency equipment, drugs and emergency trolleys at eight 24 hour CHCs in the Western Cape Metro pole. Data collection for the study was conducted at the eight 24 hour CHCs over a 3 month period during the months of June 2012 to August 2012. The data was analyzed using the Statistical Package for Health Sciences (Statistica, version 10 of 2012) and Microsoft Excel. Results A total of 81 emergency equipment items, 43 emergency drug items (37 emergency drugs, 6 intravenous fluids) and 78 emergency trolley items were required to be in each emergency unit. An average of 62% of all recommended emergency equipment items, 80% of all emergency drugs and 52.4% of all emergency trolley items were found to be present in this survey. Essential emergency paediatric equipment including bag ventilation devices, Magill’s forceps, masks, intraosseous needles and appropriate blood pressure cuffs were found to be absent at 2 CHCs. All CHCs had access to a defibrillator and ECG machine but these were found to be dysfunctional at 2 CHCs due to expired batteries and no tracing paper being available. Expired first line emergency drugs (adrenaline and atropine) were found at certain CHCs. The recording of emergency trolley checklists and stocking of essential emergency items were found to be incongruent, inconsistent and not up to the recommended standard. Conclusion Essential emergency equipment and drugs and the functionality of emergency trolleys were found to be generally inadequate. Considerable deficiencies of essential emergency items were found, particularly paediatric equipment and drugs and this may negatively impact on resuscitative efforts and outcome in both paediatric and adult emergency care at CHCs in the Western Cape Metropole.

Abstract:
In the rapidly changing market of today, companies need to be responsive and react quickly to changes in both their competitors’ behaviour but also to changes in their own technical environment. In this thesis I have examined the agile characteristics of a number of companies in Stockholm, with focus on three agile concepts; Scrum, eXtreme Programming and Test Driven Development. The work started off by a prestudy, in which I have identified the criteria that a company needs to fulfil in order to be considered agile. This resulted in four main categories of characteristics; Quality, Flexibility, Communication and Competence. After doing the prestudy, these characteristics were investigated through a combination of a quantitative study and a case study. While the results mostly lean towards agile behaviour rather than non agile, it was shown that a lot of work still remains, for instance regarding improvements in the communications area, and also in the way these companies apply the agile methodologies examined.

In the U.S. news, healthcare related headlines frequent the covers of newspapers and make regular primetime news appearances and the U.S. is not alone. The world is awakening to a need for more equal access to healthcare for its citizens and governments believe this equality will be achieved through tighter regulation in huge healthcare markets such as the pharmaceutical industry. To sustain shareholder value, as a result of these changing price structures, Novartis sees a need to reassess its sourcing and procurement strategies, assessing the feasibility of value based procurement, through staged implementation. While all procurement organizations tend to focus on maximizing cost savings for a company, this approach can often alienate suppliers and leave untapped value on the table. This additional value can be captured through long-term supplier development and collaborative work to utilize a supplier's knowledge, while maximizing the value proposition both for the company and the suppliers. For this early research, there was a focus on packaging equipment at pharmaceutical production facilities. The goal has been to understand the types of savings which could be achieved by purchasing extending its measure of success beyond price reduction to include value, such as through enabling increased quality or flexibility. As a company formed from many individual companies with a myriad procurement maturity, Novartis has an extended geographic and physical footprint which requires many disjointed groups to come together to produce products. This project has focused on developing a new procurement strategy to help optimize and standardize the procurement of Novartis's packaging lines at the manufacturing facilities, enabling them to work more cohesively to deliver greater benefit to the company. Additionally, following a successful pilot of the proposed sourcing practices in the packaging equipment space could be replicated in other category spaces both in the Pharmaceutical division and throughout Novartis's other six divisions. Novartis will continue to develop and produce drugs, as the predecessor companies have excelled in doing for more than a hundred years but it should also realize what expertise should be core and where others outside of the company excel.

Martinez, Peter Charles. "Ready to Run: Fort Worth's Mexicans in Search of Representation, 1960-2000." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2017. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc1011835/.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation analyzes Fort Worth's Mexican community from 1960 to 2000 while considering the idea of citizenship through representation in education and politics. After establishing an introductory chapter that places the research in context with traditional Chicano scholarship while utilizing prominent ideas and theories that exist within Modern Imperial studies, the ensuing chapter looks into the rise of Fort Worth's Mexican population over the last four decades of the twentieth century. Thereafter, this work brings the attention to Mexican education in Fort Worth beginning in the 1960s and going through the end of the twentieth century. This research shows some of the struggles Mexicans encountered as they sought increased representation in the classroom, on the school board, and within other areas of the Fort Worth Independent School District. Meanwhile, Mexicans were in direct competition with African Americans who also sought increased representation while simultaneously pushing for more aggressive integration efforts against the wishes of Mexican leadership. Subsequently, this research moves the attention to political power in Fort Worth, primarily focusing on the Fort Worth city council. Again, this dissertation begins in the 1960s after the Fort Worth opened the election of the mayor to the people of Fort Worth. No Mexican was ever elected to city council prior to the rise of single-member districts despite several efforts by various community leaders. Chapter V thus culminates with the rise of single-member districts in 1977 which transitions the research to chapter VI when Mexicans were finally successful in garnering political representation on the city council. Finally, Chapter VII concludes the twentieth century beginning with the rapid rise and fall of an organization called Hispanic 2000, an organization that sought increased Mexican representation but soon fell apart because of differences of opinion. In concluding the research, the final chapter provides an evaluation of the lack of Mexican representation both in Fort Worth education and in the political realm. Furthermore, the finishing chapter places Fort Worth's Mexican situation within the context of both Chicano history as well as identify some key aspects of the history of modern empire. This investigation poses pertinent questions regarding the lack of Mexican representation while African Americans end the century well-represented on the school board, in education jobs, and on the city council.

With the current absence of a REIT-styled vehicle in China, this thesis examines the potential opportunities and obstacles pertaining to the future introduction of REITs in China. The thesis provides a comparative analysis on major REIT regimes around the world, in terms of formation, structuring and operation guidelines, to identify their level of similarity and variance. The thesis then shifts its focus to China, examining the development background of China's real estate sector and analyzing China's market fundamentals and regulatory environment. Lastly, the thesis provides a closer look at the REIT sector in Singapore and Hong Kong and discusses their operational experience of the assets in China. The thesis finds that REITs are regulated differently among countries. However, a number of core criteria must be maintained to ensure the success of REITs in China. Commercial real estate, although accounts for a small share of the real estate market currently, has grown rapidly in recent years and is at the beginning of a boom as China continues to grow and mature as a market economy. On the capital side, the Chinese real estate companies are heavily dependant on bank loans to finance their development projects and there is a strong need for alternative and diversified financing vehicles for future growth. However, China also proves to be a complex market with a unique state-owned land system, with many social issues to confront as a developing country and with a constantly changing and evolving regulatory framework. All of these pose numerous challenges to the adoption of REITs in China. It is clear that a REIT-styled investment vehicle fits the current and future needs of the Chinese real estate sector. Although China is not yet ready to adopt REITs by international standards, China must pursue the experiment of such practice amid of the challenges. China's growth path in the past thirty years with its remarkable economic reform has just proved this point.

Ghumra, Shamir. "Developing a sustainability assessment framework for ready-mixed concrete." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2012. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/12135.

Full text
Abstract:
Assessing the sustainability of construction products can help to identify particular characteristics and benefits which can then assist decision makers by allowing comparisons between products. Existing mechanisms and tools to make such assessments are associated to project-level assessments or have a bias towards environmental issues, rather than incorporating social, environmental and economic aspects of sustainability. The growing popularity of sustainability rating schemes and standards has created an imbalance for product manufacturers that are increasingly seeking ways to gain competitive advantage on the basis of producing more sustainable products. Aggregate Industries, a construction products manufacturer and the Building Research Establishment (BRE) therefore instigated this Engineering Doctorate (EngD) to address this lack of a holistic sustainability assessment methodology for construction products for manufacturers. The EngD research developed a sustainability assessment framework for ready-mixed concrete. The development of the framework was influenced by existing assessment schemes such as the BRE Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) and Ceequal (The Sustainability Assessment Scheme for Civil Engineering projects). The BRE BES 6001 Framework Standard for the Responsible Sourcing of Construction Products was also a factor in this research complimented by primary research. The assessment framework addresses a range of sustainability issues such as community engagement (social), waste (environmental) and whole life cost (economic) amongst others tailored to ready-mixed concrete. These issues are assessed against three product life cycle stages; raw materials; manufacture and use. The outputs of the framework will then inform the manufacturer about areas for improvement and present a profile of each product for a given manufacturing site in a more holistic way than current methods allow. The trialling of the assessment framework both in the UK and Canada has shown that the output of the EngD is a viable mechanism to assess the sustainability of concrete from a manufacturer s perspective. This research has given Aggregate Industries an opportunity to evaluate current objectives and targets within the business and helped to shape the future sustainability strategy. Aspects of the framework are also being considered for inclusion in the future development of the BRE s BES 6001 Framework Standard for the Responsible Sourcing of Construction Products. This EngD has also identified an emergent need for a shift in future focus from individual products to a systems level assessment approach. Product sustainability tends to focus on the embodied impacts whereas the sustainability of construction systems has a much broader focus over the entire life cycle of the system. This area of work will require further research.

Yasim, Yasmeen. "Effective cartel enforcement : getting Malaysia ready for what lies ahead." Thesis, University of East Anglia, 2013. https://ueaeprints.uea.ac.uk/47920/.

Full text
Abstract:
Cartel enforcement is challenging, particularly for developing countries with young competition enforcement regimes as cartels are illicit in nature and competition authorities are faced with connected firms that sometimes enjoy close links with policy makers. So, why should developing countries be concerned with effective cartel enforcement? This thesis answers the question by explaining it from international perspective – international cartel enforcement via regional trade agreements between developed and developing countries. This work argues that in order to encourage the utilisation of competition related provisions in regional TAs there are prerequisites to be satisfied. One of the prerequisites is there has to be incentives for the regional TA signatories to cooperate in international cartel enforcement by invoking the competition related provisions under regional trade agreements. Incentives arise out of the existence of credible competition enforcement regimes and the strength of trade relationship between the regional trade agreement partners. Without domestic competition law in place, there is no legal basis for cooperation. Even if there is a competition law in place, the absence of a credible competition enforcement regime would not incentivise a developed country with an advanced competition jurisdiction to invoke competition related provisions in a regional trade agreement to address cross border competition infringements. Therefore, it is important for trade reliant developing countries to have a credible competition enforcement regime in place, lest international cartels continue to thrive and adversely impact the domestic market of developing countries and international trade. This includes ensuring that effective cartel enforcement exists in their jurisdiction. In this regard, this work focuses on Malaysia to illustrate how it can be done. Malaysia, a middle income developing country which had fairly recently adopted a competition law with the enactment of the Competition Act 2010. Although the law is already in place, Malaysia is yet to formulate a coherent and formal cartel enforcement policy for the country. The policy is important for effective cartel enforcement because it complements the law and provides clarity and transparency in regard to legislative implementation. In determining an appropriate cartel enforcement policy for Malaysia, the discussion encompasses the following aspects: an appropriate cartel enforcement policy for Malaysia; exemptions of horizontal agreements; limitations of the Competition Act 2010 in light of tougher cartel enforcement. These are the pivotal aspects in cartel enforcement which ought to be focused on to facilitate Malaysia in formulating its cartel enforcement policy. At the end of the discussion, this work suggests the form and contents of Malaysia’s cartel enforcement policy which account for Malaysia’s limitations as a middle income developing country with a young competition jurisdiction. The work also finds that there is insufficient empirical evidence available on market concentration in Malaysia and therefore recommends the necessary studies which ought to be undertaken in order to facilitate the competition authorities to formulate an accurate competition enforcement policy.

Slabbert, Helgard. "Strategic vision for the South African ready to drink market." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/50453.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (MBA)--University of Stellenbosch, 2005.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The global RTD market was one of the fastest growing drinks categories in the world in 2002 and many brewers and spirits companies have entered the new market. The RTD category gained most of their volume from the young adult consumers and across the boundaries of wine. spirits and beer. The strategic vision of the RID market determine whether this is a short intense fashion or a permanent feature in the drinks market, given the historical precedence of the mid to late 1980's when the wine cooler boom and later the alcopops (alcoholic carbonates) phenomenon passed as quickly as it came. The purpose of the research report sets out to investigate the global RTD markets in order to determine the strategic vision for the South African market. The study did a review of the top tcn RID markets and then focussed on the strategies and performance of the Australian and United Kingdom markets, due to the level of development and similarities in culture of these markets with the South African market. The analysis of the global RID markets showed the three successful RTD models are female, androgynous and male RIDs and consumers perceived and use the three types of RTDs differently. Amongst the most important suggestions the author recommends that the biggest opportunity for the South African R TD category is to gain market share from the beer market in the male sector, which is by far the biggest seller of alcoholic beverages in South Africa. The current successes in the South African market came from female and androgynous brands, but it is very difficult to maintain brand loyalty within these segments due to the nature of the young adult consumers and female drinkers.

Abstract:
The rapid growth of Louisiana's coastal restoration science and technology assets is paralleled by the growth of business resources to fulfill myriad project needs. Many institutions and organizations in Louisiana seek to further develop the state's research, education, engineering and related restoration assets into a globally competitive set of industries with exportable expertise and products that help the state capitalize on its water challenges. Globally, similar efforts are identified (and often branded) as water technology innovation clusters (or more simply water clusters). This paper explores the phenomenon of the development of water clusters by public-private partnerships and initiatives, nationally and internationally, in a comparative analysis with Louisiana.

Abstract:
The European Union as well as Governments all around the world, including the Swedish Government, are putting a lot of time, money andeffort into facilitating the implementation of Automated Vehicles (AVs).The majority of these efforts tend to focus on either the technicalaspects, action plans or the legal scope. However, little attention isbeing drawn to the practical implications of these efforts. Hence, this thesis investigates the road operators’ willingness to act and their readiness in regards to data and information provision for AVs, as well as how the readiness can be improved. In particular, focus is geared towards the three largest road operators in Sweden: the city of Stockholm, the city of Gothenburg and the Swedish Transport Administration. The primary segments of data consists of information gathered through semi-structured in-depth interviews and benchmarking against international road operators. The results show a gap between the official visions of being at the forefront in automated mobility, and the actual practical implementations of these visions in the road operator organisation's. The author assigns this gap to a lack of incitements, decision-making,and monetary assets. Moreover, the findings suggest a correlationbetween the approach towards automated mobility within the organisationsand the actual level of readiness. This correlation is intensifiedduring the second data collection, when benchmarking international road operators against the Swedish. Further, the author underlines theimportance of managing this gap in order to achieve the strong coordination needed to reach the set up goals. The paper conclusively suggests, by comparing how road operators work with such matters in theNetherlands, Norway and Finland, how to overcome such obstacles.

Sun, Zhiyu. "Generating analysis-ready NURBS models of cloth for isogeometric analysis." Thesis, University of Iowa, 2015. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/2015.

Full text
Abstract:
Non-uniform rational basis spline (NURBS) is a geometric language which has been commonly used in computer graphics and Computer Aided Design over years, due to its great flexibility and precision for handling modeled shapes. In computer-aided design, NURBS has become part of industry standards. In most CAD programs every solid model is described by NURBS and stored in NURBS data structure. Recently, the geometric basis function of NURBS is directly used in analysis, leading to the birth of a new area of computational mechanics called isogeometric analysis (IGA). Compared with the traditional finite element analysis, IGA eliminates the disconnection between analysis and design at the geometric level, showing superiority on efficiency and accuracy over the traditional finite element method. This thesis focuses on the development of an IGA preprocessor for converting an original CAD model (2D-NURBS model) to an ASG (analysis suited geometry) model. ASG means models with mesh quality suitable for analysis. Core technologies utilized during the development include the well-developed NURBS algorithm of knot insertion and knot removal, and a self-developed technology of constructing and utilizing “multi-patch tree”. The developed IGA preprocessor is utilized to process a body armour model consisting of multiple NURBS patches with overly dense meshes. After the processing, the output model has a relatively reasonable elements distribution; the uniformity of the mesh across presumably contact patch boundaries is rebuilt.

Abstract:
This research had its initial motivation the theoretical debate on ready-made, pop art and conceptual art, which comes up from criticism of intellectual and aesthetic closure present in the canons required by the school curriculum in Brazil. The implications of these concepts are discussed in parallel with a critical view of the European and American statements of these matrices for understanding the creation of Arthur Bispo do Rosário, Brazil (1919-1988) and Georges Adéagbo, Benin (1942). In addition, the path of the researcher-artist himself, participates on the understanding and analysis proposed. The focus lies on the one hand, in the everyday objects materials used in the work of Arthur Bispo do Rosário and in the routes of Georges Adéagbo, who is a self-taught artist that exposes his ideas and narratives shaped objects \"sculptural\" and public spaces interventions. They still have in common, their methodology that mirror their own concepts and archaeologies of knowledge linked to their own cultures and societies as well as constant construction of their identities. These thought processes involve mental action (concept or mental project) and implementation of the ideals reflected in his works of art. Both have as their main concern the everyday life presented by fused endogenous and exogenous objects that generate different materiality, narrative and even the deconstruction of the object itself as phenomenology of its metamorphosis, once it was removed from its place of original of meaning, reframed in space-being for Bishop, or in reverse self-archeology for Adéagbo.

Muyingo, Henry. "Are listed property companies in Sweden ready for fair value accounting?" Thesis, KTH, Bygg- och fastighetsekonomi, 2002. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-59602.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this Masters thesis has been to find out if, and how, listed Swedish property companies have prepared themselves for the regulation passed by the European Parliament that requires all EU companies listed in a regulated market as well as companies preparing admission to trading, at the latest from 2005 onwards, to prepare their consolidated financial statements in accordance with a single set of accounting standards, International Accounting Standards (IAS). The thesis work has been concentrated on the analysis of the fair value model in IAS 40, investment property and how companies will measure the fair value of their property. The data and results for this study were collected through interviewing various actors in the real estate market in Sweden, the UK and the Netherlands on the use of fair value accounting for investment properties. Results from the study show that: • 57% of the listed Swedish property companies have started preparations to apply IAS by the year 2005 but it is not likely that any of the companies will change before 2005. • Currently there is significant divergence between some of the IAS and the RRs, which is causing some problems in the conversion process. However there is a general misconception that Swedish laws will need to be revised before the EU regulation can come into effect. • Changes in accounting principles will not affect the underlying cash flows and financial analysts will probably not take much notice of the new " IAS profits". • Unlike in the UK and the Netherlands, use of the fair value model will not affect the dividend payouts or remuneration policies in Sweden. But it will affect the accounting for long leasehold property investments in all of the three countries. • The fair value model was considered to have a lot of advantages over the cost model. • Listed Swedish property companies, unlike the English and Dutch companies, are not ready to adopt the use of the fair value model mainly due to the uncertainty surrounding the measurement of the fair values. • Measurement of the fair values will be based mainly on the discounted cash flow method. • In contrast to the companies studied in the UK and the Netherlands, Swedish property managers were distrustful of the exclusive use of external valuers.

Between April 16, 2007, and December 14, 2012, the United States has seen 25 mass shootings, seven of which occurred in 2012. A report by United States Department of Homeland Security, in 2009, suggested that the United States will be the target of a terrorist act that could cause a high number of casualties. The November 26, 2008, attack on Mumbai is a transparent example of how determined terrorists, trained to die fighting, can bring a large metropolitan city to its knees. It is entirely probable that Mumbai-type attacks could occur in the United States. Since the local law enforcement respond to attacks in progress, any active shooter event would be handled by the local jurisdiction. Many law enforcement agencies have begun to incorporate tactical plans to respond to Mumbai-type terrorist attacks. This thesis focused on police preparedness of select large metropolitan law enforcement agencies for potential Mumbai-type terrorist attacks. A comparative analysis of these police agencies was conducted, which showed that the frequency of training was found to be varying and inadequate by these agencies. A similar concern was that none of the agencies had equipped all the police officers with rifles, which were deemed critical to engage well-equipped active shooters. It is the conclusion of the thesis that gaps in preparedness exist and law enforcement organizations have room for improvement. It was also concluded that agencies need to enhance communication capability between neighboring jurisdictions and focus on triage of the victims during the early stages of attacks when medical personnel would be unable to approach

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to explore whether non-profit immigration organizations are ready for a comprehensive immigration reform. Social workers need to recognize that a lack of readiness among non-profit immigration organizations for a comprehensive immigration reform will lead to a lack of required services for undocumented populations. The sample consisted of twelve religious and non-religiously affiliated non-profit immigration organizations. A qualitative research method was used to analyze the data. The results of the study concluded that non-profit immigration organizations are not ready for a CIR. Although the organizations are not ready, several factors were found to affect their readiness for a comprehensive immigration reform. Factors that negatively contributed to their readiness included learned experiences with Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), directors’ perceptions, and funding. Recommendations for better service delivery to undocumented populations include the recommendation that organizations reviewing their plans by addressing these factors.

Lam, Yow Thim. "A knowledge-based system for planning and scheduling ready-mixed concrete." Thesis, Loughborough University, 1995. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/11138.

Full text
Abstract:
The use of ready-mixed concrete primarily involves two parties, the supplier and the customer (who is usually a construction contractor), although others may be involved. Ready-mixed concrete is not only a product, it is also a service. This implies that the supply of ready-mixed concrete should satisfy the customers' needs in relation to both quality and supply. To satisfy quality requirements, ready-mixed concrete must contain suitable materials, and be produced under conditions of quality control by experienced staff using reliable equipment To meet the supply requirement, it must be delivered at the time and rate required. Based on the findings in several surveys and studies, the UK ready-mixed concrete industry appears to meet the quality requirement quite well. However, the service provided to the customers could be improved. In addition, the industry's efficiency is not satisfactory when compared to its counterparts in other European countries such as Germany. Due to the peculiar characteristics of the product, which has a "shelf life" of only a few hours, and the unpredictable nature of the operating environment, the planning and scheduling problems of the production and delivery activities are usually unstructured and complex. In practice, UK ready-mixed concrete companies rely on their shippers' personal experience or intuition to make their planning and scheduling decisions. This research explored the feasibility of using a knowledge-based decision support system for planning' and scheduling the production and delivery of ready-mixed concrete. A prototype called ISRMC has been successfully developed as a result of a study of the operations of concrete production and construction as well as the ready-mixed concrete production and delivery process and detailed collection of knowledge from various sources.

Leggett, Mark J. "Bacterial community adaptation to chlorinated pollutant challenge : implications for ready biodegradation testing." Thesis, Cardiff University, 2010. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/54121/.

Full text
Abstract:
This study aimed to investigate the RBT outcome as a function of the bacterial inoculum during adaptation to degrade the HAs dichloroacetic acid (DCA), trichloroacetic acid (TCA) and 2-monochloropropionic acid (2MCPA). The HAs investigated were ranked, in order of greatest recalcitrance; TCA > 2MCPA > DCA.  DCA degradation was associated with enrichment of a Ralstonia like phylotype and dehII expression.  TCA degradation in replicate RBTs was consistently associated with a Bradyrhizobium like phylotype and dehI gene expression, regardless of the inoculum concentration used, suggesting that TCA imposes a highly selective pressure on the community. TCA degradation was affected by the inoculum concentration, as the rate of degradation was slower at the lowest inoculum concentration used, implying that TCA degradation was accomplished by cometabolism. 2MCPA was associated with various Alpha-, Beta- and Gammaproteobacteria, and the presence and expression of both dehI and dehII genes. Biodegradation of 2MCPA was strongly influenced by inoculum concentration. At lower inoculum concentrations, 2MCPA was commonly associated with a biphasic dechlorination curve, which has not been reported previously.  Biphasic dechlorination curves were attributed to the enrichment of an initial degrading organism, always associated with dehII expression, which was succeeded following 50% dechlorination by a second organism, in association with dehI expression, which were supposed to act sequentially on the L- and D-2MCPA isomers, respectively. The delayed enrichment of a dehI containing organism was attributed to their low environmental abundance, relative to dehII containing organisms. This study highlights the utility of cultivation-independent methods to link more precisely community structure and function during adaptation to degrade xenobiotic compounds.

Abstract:

This program evaluation examined students that entered kindergarten not ready on the Brigance screener and received research based reading interventions to determine if an elementary school was successful in closing the achievement gap so that they would have the literacy skills needed to be successful in first grade. Evidence of success was based on progress monitoring through Brigance and MAP testing. The researcher concluded that while 50% of the students were ready at the end of kindergarten only 7% returned to first grade ready. Other results indicated that the achievement gap was closing for students in special education but not low income students as well as gains for students receiving intervention and those not receiving intervention were equivalent. Implications for practice include the importance of preschool and full-day kindergarten as well as ensuring that summer learning is considered between kindergarten and first grade.

Schaal, Jennifer. "Ready for the future: assessing the collaborative capacity of state emergency management agencies." Thesis, Monterey, California. Naval Postgraduate School, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10945/34242.

Full text
Abstract:
Emerging needs of the emergency management discipline are outlined in recent presidential directives, national strategies and federal emergency management strategic initiative documents. Meeting these needs requires collaboration as a core capability. Collaboration with diverse communities, volunteers and the private sector are essential, as are strategic and operational actions for collaboration, building social capital, and using social media for collaboration. The future of our nation’s resilience to disasters depends on a collaborative network of partners that reaches from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to individual citizens and the communities they inhabit. State emergency management agencies are the hub of this network and must lead the effort to effectively collaborate at all levels. The research findings of this thesis show that state emergency management organizations have not yet fully developed the collaborative capacities necessary to meet emerging needs. In addition, data shows that organizational structures of state emergency management organizations are impacting collaborative capacity development. In particular, military-based organizations lag behind their civilian-based counterparts in every area of collaborative capacity building. Reasons for these differences, and research into more effective structural models, should be explored.

Vélez, Gallego Mario César. "Algorithms for Scheduling Parallel Batch Processing Machines with Non-Identical Job Ready Times." FIU Digital Commons, 2009. http://digitalcommons.fiu.edu/etd/276.

Full text
Abstract:
This research is motivated by a practical application observed at a printed circuit board (PCB) manufacturing facility. After assembly, the PCBs (or jobs) are tested in environmental stress screening (ESS) chambers (or batch processing machines) to detect early failures. Several PCBs can be simultaneously tested as long as the total size of all the PCBs in the batch does not violate the chamber capacity. PCBs from different production lines arrive dynamically to a queue in front of a set of identical ESS chambers, where they are grouped into batches for testing. Each line delivers PCBs that vary in size and require different testing (or processing) times. Once a batch is formed, its processing time is the longest processing time among the PCBs in the batch, and its ready time is given by the PCB arriving last to the batch. ESS chambers are expensive and a bottleneck. Consequently, its makespan has to be minimized. A mixed-integer formulation is proposed for the problem under study and compared to a formulation recently published. The proposed formulation is better in terms of the number of decision variables, linear constraints and run time. A procedure to compute the lower bound is proposed. For sparse problems (i.e. when job ready times are dispersed widely), the lower bounds are close to optimum. The problem under study is NP-hard. Consequently, five heuristics, two metaheuristics (i.e. simulated annealing (SA) and greedy randomized adaptive search procedure (GRASP)), and a decomposition approach (i.e. column generation) are proposed – especially to solve problem instances which require prohibitively long run times when a commercial solver is used. Extensive experimental study was conducted to evaluate the different solution approaches based on the solution quality and run time. The decomposition approach improved the lower bounds (or linear relaxation solution) of the mixed-integer formulation. At least one of the proposed heuristic outperforms the Modified Delay heuristic from the literature. For sparse problems, almost all the heuristics report a solution close to optimum. GRASP outperforms SA at a higher computational cost. The proposed approaches are viable to implement as the run time is very short.

Endrikat, Sarah Ann. "Risk Assessment for Listeria monocytogenes in Ready-to-eat Meat and Poultry Products." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/35058.

Full text
Abstract:
Various control methods used in the meat and poultry processing environment to mitigate listeriosis were evaluated using a dynamic in-plant Monte Carlo model. These control methods included food contact surface testing, sanitation, post-processing lethality treatment, and product formulation with microbial growth inhibitors. The dynamic in-plant model served as an input into the risk assessment model developed by the FDA and FSIS in 2003 which predicts the number of deaths and illnesses resulting from the use of each control method. The use of growth inhibitors combined with a post-processing lethality step was estimated to save over 200 more lives than the FSIS proposed minimum sampling standard. An analysis of data collected by the National Alliance for Food Safety and Security (NAFSS) found that retail-sliced deli meats have a greater prevalence and concentration of L. monocytogenes than prepackaged deli meats. Cross contamination at the retail level is suspected due to clustering of sample positives by store and the influence of sampling time of day on the prevalence of L. monocytogenes. The comparative risk of Listeria monocytogenes in retail sliced versus prepackaged deli meats was evaluated using a modified version of the 2003 FDA-FSIS risk assessment model which considered slicing location and the use of growth inhibitors. The comparative risk ratio for the number of deaths from retail-sliced versus prepackaged deli meats was found to be 9.1 and retail-sliced product with a growth inhibitor was found to be at greater risk for listeriosis than prepackaged product without growth inhibitor.

Brooks, Bradley A. "CORRELATION OF READY FOR TASKING TO FULL MISSION CAPABLE METRICS FOR F/A-18E/F." Monterey, California. Naval Postgraduate School, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10945/32798.

Full text
Abstract:
Historically, the U.S. Navy has utilized Full Mission Capable (FMC) as the standard metric in assessing aviation readiness, but an alternative to FMC has been introduced by air wing commanders: Ready for Tasking (RFT). RFT is a less demanding standard for readiness that provides a better representation of mission success than FMC. Since FMC is used as an input to aviation repairable sparing models, before RFT can replace FMC in funding models it is necessary to analyze the linkage between RFT and FMC. This thesis explores the relationship between RFT and FMC based on five years of data from the East Coast Carrier Air Wings flying F/A-18E/F Super Hornets. Linear and logistic regression models are developed to analyze the impacts 11 common variables have on RFT. It also examines readiness trends throughout the Fleet Response Training Plan.

Swift, Chelsea. "Negotiating contexts for reading : becoming 'someone who reads'." Thesis, University of York, 2016. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/15327/.

Full text
Abstract:
In the current English education context, it is not enough just to be able to read; what young people read is what sets them apart as being more - or less - literate, cultured or educated than someone else. It is often specific texts, their literary value, and whether or not they represent certain groups, which are central to debates played out through education policy, research, and in the media. This focus on the text is responsible for persistent unsuccessful attempts to redistribute cultural capital and level the playing field through education, failing to take into account the different social and cultural resources young people bring to the classroom. It has led to a deficit model of reading in education which places blame on the individual for failing to understand and appreciate these texts and authors in particular ways, rather than on the school for failing to value their reading lives within the education context. In this research, I shift this lens onto readers themselves, the act of reading, and the contexts in which it takes place. It is concerned with young people's development of a ‘reading habitus’; the extent to which they view reading as being ‘for the likes of them’ and their ways of ‘being’ a reader. I explore how young people negotiate the various ways of reading and being a reader they are exposed to as they move between and within fields, in order to develop a sense for themselves of what counts as reading and what it means to be a reader. Although this research is not concerned with academic outcomes, reading for pleasure is a strong predictor of these outcomes. This, in addition to the social and emotional benefits of reading for pleasure, and the important role that identity plays in motivation and engagement, highlights the importance of researching reading identity in cultural and educational contexts which privilege particular types of reader. In order to generate data, 96 young people (aged 13- 14) completed a whole class critical incident charting activity, mapping out their 'reading journeys'. 28 of these then participated in a series of 2 semi-structured interviews. My findings challenge the broader neoliberal agenda in education and its promises of social mobility through access to a culture of which certain young people have been deprived. Placing emphasis on readers and reading rather than on specific texts, acknowledging the role of the social in acts of reading and learning, challenges the dominant model of reading, and the inequalities it maintains. It demonstrates not only the rich reading lives that many of the young people lead outside of school, but how the current deficit model serves to make these lives invisible, not only in education policy and in the classroom, but often to the young people themselves.

Jones, Michelle R. "An Investigation of Fit, Style, and Accessibility of Ready-To-Wear Clothing for Tall Women." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1996. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/36799.

Full text
Abstract:
Tall women's satisfaction with Tall clothing was examined in regard to fit, style, and accessibility. In addition, anthropometric measurements (stature, neck to waist, waist to ankle, shoulder to wrist) of tall women were compared with reported fit problems with Tall clothing, with the measurements from commercial standard PS 42-70, and with two racial groups. Data were gathered from 75 women who were at least 5 feet 8 inches and between 18 and 54 years old.

The subjects were satisfied with the overall fit of Tall clothing, but were dissatisfied with the style, and reported buying Misses' size for most clothing. The subjects rated style as more important than fit and were more satisfied with the overall style of Misses' clothing than with the style of Tall clothing. The subjects appeared to buy Misses' clothing despite their dissatisfaction with fit, in order to have the desired styles.

The reported fit problems with Tall clothing were too short hiplines in skirts and too short hemlines in button-up blouses. When compared with the measurements for Tall in PS 42-70, the subjects' measurements were significantly larger. Comparisons of measurements between Black subjects and White subjects revealed no significant differences.

Style appeared to be a major influence in tall women's dissatisfaction with and the purchase of Tall clothing. Therefore, manufacturers need to consider aesthetic qualities when developing garments for this market and should revise sizing systems to accommodate the fit needs of Tall women.
