Abstract:
How can I, as a teacher-researcher, read my own practice? How can I, as a teacher-researcher, theorise my practice? These are the central questions pursued in this thesis. They are pursued through three action research projects. The research took place in Firhouse Community College, a second-level school in Dublin. Each of the projects was concerned with exploring the potential of conversation in a number of different school contexts. Chapter one relates my research to the literature on action research and to the literature on dialogue in education, and relates my work to the ethical concepts of friendship and care. The chapter also outlines the methodological approach and the data used in the research. Chapter two relates the interpretative reading of my own practitioner accounts to critical theory and the emancipatory ambition of its reflective practices. A project on student friendship groups is discussed in chapters three and four. These chapters highlight friendship as an important social and educational phenomenon and identify conversation as a concomitant communicative form. These chapters theorise the concept of pedagogical conversation and relate this concept to Aristotle's theory of friendship. Chapter five gives an account of a project with a third-year English class, developed around the ideas of dialogue and friendship. In the course of the project, students organised themselves into reading and discussion groups that were largely autonomous and self-regulating. Chapter six reviews the role and place of the teacher in the discourse of the classroom, in a dialogic teaching situation, and explores the potential of dialogue as means of enquiry and reflection. Chapter seven contrasts the peaceable conversation of professional friendship with the disputatious debate that often occurs at formal staff meetings. Chapter eight offers some reflective comments on the research. This thesis lays the foundation for a theory of teaching as a form of social practice, characterised by a disposition of care that is associated with friendship, and expressed through conversation. In doing so, it makes a valuable and original contribution to the literature on teaching and school culture. In its development of a dialogic model of research, the thesis makes a contribution to the literature on action research and practitioner enquiry.

Abstract:
This ethnographic study explored everyday lived experiences of a group of Latina women in school and in the community in an Adult Basic Education (ABE) setting. I examined the functions of discourse in ABE in literacy events (Heath, 1983). In this way, I gained insights into literacy practices through ethnography of communication (Heath, 1983; Hymes, 1972, 1977; Philips, 1993; Saville-Troike, 2003). Narratives provided insights about what was communicated in everyday interactions. In a "teaching to the test" ideological environment, the Latina participants in this study shared knowledge and experiences and created a unique sociocultural (Vygotsky, 1978) context for learning. Over time, a community of practice (Wenger, 1998) developed through mutual engagement, joint effort, and shared repertoire which included in and out of school literacies. Salient was the collaborative effort among a local community center, community college, and school district which strived to meet the needs of Latina/o students and their families. These multiple communities of practice provided a support network integral to sustaining a community of learners. The backdrop of this study, an American-Mexican Southwest border region, was the cultural context in which American education and Latinas' Sonora Mexican world views met. This hybrid space or borderlands Anzaldua (1987) described as a place where two cultures merged to form a third culture. In practice, this hybrid space was explored in discursive practices which provided an alternative space, a third space (Moje, Cicechanowski, Kramer, Ellis, Carrillo, & Collazo, 2004) in which identities were negotiated. Participants negotiated to find balance, a synergy between change and maintenance, which was ongoing as they struggled to maintain a traditional world view while accommodating new ideas.Integral to ongoing identity construction were the relationships with language, learning, and conversation. A story emerged from daily acts and events that reflected negotiated individual and social identities in the practice of literacy, teaching, and learning. This study demonstrates the insights ethnographic investigations can bring to understanding the functions of discourse in the construction of identity and socialization into learning.

Abstract:
The assertion of this dissertation is that teachers engage in conversation as a way to construct and reconstruct knowledge in their teaching of reading. In this study I investigate this claim by exploring the experiences of eight elementary/middle school teachers enrolled in my online reading course. Narrative, which is the telling of stories, is the form of inquiry that I use in this dissertation. It is a methodology where the data set consists of stories which are constructed by the participants and the researcher. In this case, stories are created from online discussion threads where teachers engaged in ongoing conversation about reading. In analysing these discussions I attend to two overriding questions posed to participants prior to each discussion: 1) what connections does the reading bring forward with my experiences as a reader or as a teacher of reading? and 2) what new wonders, insights, and possibilities does the reading raise for me as I consider it in relation to my understanding of the reading process? These two components-the stories of teachers' experiences in the teaching of reading, and the analysis of these stories-form a large part ofthe study. Along with narrative inquiry into teachers' stories of practice in reading, I consider a further question: How might the analysis of what is uncovered through this study serve to inform novice teachers as they enter into the teaching profession? I examine teacher knowledge and the role of dialogue to enhance such knowledge in order to contribute to the development of teachers beginning their career.

Abstract:
The aim of the study is to investigate how theories of close reading and literature conversations can be used in the practice of teaching. As a way to achieve insight into this, I have applied the method of action research to study different strategies for reading comprehension. Action research is a suitable method to acquire knowledge about one’s own work for purposes of development. The result indicates that a classroom where more than one voice can be heard and where different forms of conversation can be represented can further the pupils’ experience of and engagement in the teaching. The pupils’ evaluations allow me to draw the conclusion that the methods by which I worked – close reading, whole-class discussions and group discussions, and individual writing – appear to have had a positive effect on the development of the pupils’ reading comprehension.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to examine teachers' thoughts about literature conversations. The study amied to find out what theachers think a succsessful literature conversation look like, what opportunities and challenges the method has and what significance the literature conversation has for students' development of reading comprehension. To collect data for the study, semi-structured interviews were conducted with ten certified and active teachers who teaches in grades 4-6. The study is based on Lev Vygotsky's theories of learning, which means that people learn in interaction with others. The results of the study show that teachers believe that the literature converastion is the method that benefits students the most when it comes to developing reading comprehension. The teachers believe that in a successful literature conversation the students learn from each other. This should be done in small groups as the students get a greater opportunity to exspress their thoughts and opinions about the text. The literature conversation is important for students' development of reading comprehension. In conversations, the studnets can help each other to get further in their cognitive thinking. This can be linked to the zone of proximal development, which is a concept in the sociolultural theory of learning and means that children learn in interaction whit others.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to investigate how six primary school teachers work with reading strategies along with reading aloud and text conversations. The study also aimed to find out what kind of questions teachers use during these conversations in order to assess students' understanding, and the benefits of the teaching method from a teacher's perspective. The theoretical approach of the study is based on the sociocultural perspective, which means that pupils learn through dialogue with others. An interview study was conducted with six licensed primary school teachers. The result showed that all teachers use reading aloud and text discussion along with reading strategy daily. The teachers use different models and a majority of the respondents are inspired by the reading strategy model “En läsande klass”. The result also evinces that the teachers use questions on, between and beyond the lines to verify students understanding during text conversations at an early age. The teachers experience that reading aloud together with text discussion develop students reading comprehension and their use of reading strategies. All respondents also believed that this type of teaching would have been more developing for pupils in smaller groups.

AbstractThis is an essay about Chambers book talk, how Chambers describes them and how they beenpracticed in reality, that´s my purpose. In Chamber´s book Tell me – Children, Reading andTalk, I look specific for Chambers arguments for this kind of literary education and comparethis with teacher’s description of book conversations. I finally compare this result withactually scientific arguments that supported Chambers arguments.Sten-Olof Ullström proclaims the meaning of social interactions as a prerequisite forreading and writing development. He says that the reading education must offer various formsof interaction for pupils to challenge each other. Ullström´s theoretical discussion is mytheoretical point of departure in this essay.I found out that book conversation is a reprehensible method to reach a literarycompetence. I also find out that the interviewed teacher work in an experienced based way, where their educations are founded from pupils experience and conditions. Keywords: book conversation, literary education, reading competence, social interaction

Abstract:
The objective of our work was to examine if reading loudly has any importance for the development of children’s language. In the beginning we looked in a retrospect at the children literature’s history and continued to describe the development of children’s language according to various theories. At this point we describe how reading loudly can develop language, creating inspiration to learn to read or to write and language’s consciousness. Additionally one needs to consider the effect of children’s difference in experiences and awareness. We interviewed teachers of preschools and elementary classes where we examined how and why they apply the usage of reading loudly, if the teachers acknowledge the importance for the development of children’s language including their view on reading loudly and what it has for an importance on their work. We as well were present at classes and observed their activities with the objective to examine how teachers work with children’s language development. The result of these observations showed that teachers apply the usage of reading loudly at class but in different extends.

Abstract:
The aim of this study is to gain more knowledge about the preschool teachers own descriptions of how and why they are working with reading aloud and storytelling and if it is different depending on the age groups in the preschool. The study's methodology is qualitative and consists of four semi-structured interviews of preschool teachers at two different preschools. The result shows that the preschool teachers converses with the younger children, talking and asking questions about the pictures in the literature and lets them retell what was read for them with the help of for example story bags and with the older children also converses about the text in the literature. Reading aloud is something that all preschool teachers do for children in all ages and it occurs primarily spontaneously throughout the day. The preschool teachers say that they use reading aloud, storytelling and conversation because they believe it promotes children's language development and build a foundation for their future learning of reading and writing. The results also show that the literature is available to all children in the preschool regardless of age and that all preschool teachers, in some way, are working with literature together with the children in the different ages.

Abstract:
Reading and especially the practice of reading aloud are crucial elements in the education of children’s earlier years. Amounts of previously conducted research is tackling reoccurring problems around reading and literacy, but just relatively few relate their work to the practice of reading aloud in the classroom setting.  This study is hereby focusing on reading aloud in the context of the large classroom and examining question types of observed conversations. By taking three different student and teacher groups (years 1, 2 and 3) into account, the small-scale study attempts to answer concerns on how, where and about what these conversations are taking place. With a backdrop on related research, the study makes use of three different researchers as a framework to respond to this. Because the narrow scale of the study it can’t be seen as representative as such, but provides suggestions for further reflections.

Abstract:
In my workplace, the pupils' shortcomings in reading comprehension were noticed after a teacher at theschool noticed that only a few students actively participated in the whole class teaching and that few pupils could answer questions related to the text that was read in the whole class. The pupils in year sixat the school already have uneven results in reading comprehension and the reading lessons that has been conducted in the two classes has for the most part consisted of whole class tutoring and individual work.  Based on the development needs that I have noticed in my workplace, the purpose of this study is to analyze four student groups' work with text conversations and find out what role support has in text conversations to develop students' reading comprehension. Furthermore, the study intends to investigate whether text conversations in small groups can increase students' participation in reading instruction inthe the swedish subject. Based on this, the following questions have been formulated:  How can text conversations in small groups serve as support for students and promote the use of reading strategies? How can text conversations in small groups increase students' participation in reading lessons?  The analytical tools that has been used to analyse the empirical data is scaffolding, reciprocal teaching and the participation model. Qualitative methods have been used to collect empirical material. These arefocus group interviews and observations. The results show that support, participation and interaction are important concepts that can, to a large extent, effect students' reading comprehension development.

Abstract:
In this dissertation literature discussions which include students of Vehicle Engineering at a Swedish upper secondary school will be discussed. The students are all boys. The study is focused on these boys’ small-group literature discussions, and the aim of the study is to describe what happens when they discuss four of the novels that form an integral part in the context of their Swedish studies. Principal fields of interest are the readings and the reception that the boys give utterance to in the literature discussions, as well as the identity-constructing processes which set in when they interact in the light of what they have read. The empirical material consists of eleven video recorded small-group discussions, and a conversational analytic perspective is combined with a reception theory perspective in the dissertation. The study shows that a sense of community is vital to the core of the boys’ literature discussions, and this has an influence on the reception and the readings that come up in the discussions. The boys are anxious to come to an agreement and voices which threaten to shatter the sense of community that has been constructed in the discussions are opposed in different ways. The literature discussions are not only arenas where the boys construct themselves as readers but are also considered as a forum where various identity-constructing practices take place. As readers these boys are bound to what can be read, and what cannot be read, in literary texts, but it is possible to see a certain development in their readings towards a more complex attitude, such as they find expression in the discussions. The boys also carry out the literature discussions, and the constructed sense of community is based on the reading of the novel to be discussed in a small-group discussion. Thus the boys take on the responsibility for their own learning as well. Many of the processes in which the boys are involved during the literature discussions could be described as processes of social reproduction, but various dividing lines which could be identified in the study also show that there are openings for other directions of the discussions.

Abstract:
Book talks have become widespread in school as they are considered to be beneficial for pupils’ potential to develop their analytical and communicative skills. The study aims to investigate book talks from a teacher’s perspective in order to compare different teachers’ experiences of book talks in relation to research. To explore this, interviews were conducted with four teachers who have experience of book talks in the intermediate level of compulsory school. To identify the teachers’ perspectives on book talks and what they value in the method, their interviews were analysed, among other things, in relation to Michael Tengberg’s concept of readings and Louise Rosenblatt’s theory of efferent and aesthetic reading. The result shows that the teachers’ descriptions of the conversations encompass a variety of readings and reading activities. They choose to highlight different themes from the literature, ranging from questions of basic values to word comprehension. The teachers support their pupils through scaffolding in the conversations so that they can potentially develop new knowledge and become more autonomous in their way of working. Autonomy in the conversations among older pupils can also be identified as a difference between grades four and six. The teachers think that book talks are rewarding because the pupils have a chance to speak and share each other’s experiences. The challenges include finding good books and getting the pupils to feel a sense of engagement.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to establish a staff development model that would assist teachers to: (1) develop a deeper understanding of their diverse student population; (2) develop a deeper awareness and understanding of their perceptions of the teaching/learning process; and (3) help teachers use their enriched knowledge and skills to promote instructional techniques that enhance all students' linguistic, academic and cognitive development. Guiding this process were three research projects: Langer and Applebee's (1987) work on teaching and learning; Goldenberg's (1991) instructional conversation (IC) Rating Scale and; Au's (1990) interpretations of Vygotsky's (1962; 1978) work on mediation in practice. Underlying these works, and also incorporated into this study, were Vygotsky's ideas on mediated assistance within one's zone of proximal development. Seven data sources were collected and analyzed for this study. These included: pre-post surveys and interviews, teachers' scripted lessons, individual discussion sessions, whole group in-services, IC Rating Scale, and ethnographic notes. Four formats were used to analyze these data: IC scoring, graphs, charts and triangulation of various data sources. Results of these procedures afforded the following findings: (1) there were substantial changes in both the quantity as well as the quality of teachers' instructional practices based on teachers' central or main concerns for their students; (2) teachers gained deeper understanding of their instructional practice through mediation and discussion; and (3) teachers noted that changes in their instructional practices enhanced learning for their diverse student population.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to explore what happened when literature and literature discussions were added to an eighth-grade history curriculum. I examined what occurred in the process of change as the teacher and researcher negotiated a new curriculum with the students, and what the effects of literature were on the historical understandings of middle school students. The theoretical framework of this study is embodied in the social constructivist theory of learning and the transactive theory of reading as explained by a reader-response perspective. It rests on the premise that approaching history through literature and encouraging an aesthetic stance toward the response to historical literature will enable students to enter into the process of historical inquiry. During this year-long classroom study the researcher, acting as a participant observer, gathered a variety of data including field notes, student journals, audio tapes of the small group literature discussions, student self-evaluations, and teacher interviews. The data were analyzed by developing and describing initial coding categories from the data, refining or adding to the categories as the analysis process continued, and counting frequencies for the various categories which emerged. The findings suggest that change is challenging and complex. There was a creative tension in the process with some factors that promoted teacher and curriculum change and other factors that acted as obstacles to change. Although each factor played an important role in the change process, the key to change was in the collaboration between teacher and researcher. It was in the conversations and collaboration between teacher and researcher that change was invented. In addition, the findings suggest that reading the historical literature, writing in their journals, and working out their understandings in small groups was well-received by students. They enjoyed this way of doing history and used the different activities to work their way into meaningful engagements with history. Student responses included: (1) purposeful retellings, (2) numerous connections among books, movies, historical themes, and life experiences, (3) thematic statements, (4) wonderings and wanderings, and (5) historical understandings that integrated facts and stories.

This project investigates how four teachers work to encourage their pupils’ love of reading. The study was conducted with the focus on teachers working in grades 1–3. The teacher’s view of their own role in furthering love of reading is also considered. It is hoped that other teachers will gain inspiration and ideas about how to work to motivate their pupils to read.To ascertain the four teachers’ opinions and thoughts I conducted qualitative interviews which I then analysed with the help of sentence concentration. The study shows that the teachers work in similar ways, but what they all have in common is that they further love of reading through methods that include conversation and communication with classmates and teacher. It has also been found that the teachers think that the responsibility for encouraging children’s lies not just with the teacher but also in the children’s home.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract  The aim of the study is to gain an understanding of how two teachers in the lower level of compulsory school, through the way they organize the teaching of reading with a focus on reading aloud, give pupils a possibility to converse about texts in order to develop an understanding of the texts. The study builds on two observations that focus on the possibilities that teachers give the pupils for conversation and the activities that deepen their understanding of the text they have read. Supplementary material consists of interviews with the two teachers. The collected material has been analysed with two analytical tools, sequential reading elements and textual mobility. The theoretical premises for the study are the sociocultural perspective (Säljö, 2012), reception theory (Rosenblatt, 2002; Langer, 2005) and Christie’s (1998) view of the teaching process in terms of macro-genres. The teachers’ comments from the study show that both teachers have the intention to ask reflective questions which give the pupils a chance for conversation at both associative and interactive level, but the observations showed that most of the teachers’ questions gave the pupils a possibility to move within the text through text-based mobility.

Abstract:
English Learners experience challenges related to comprehension of science text particularly at the high school level. The language of science differs significantly from that of conversation and expository text. Students benefit from collaborative interpretation of readings. Additionally, there appears to be a need to train adolescents in the oral language skills requisite for academic discourse. This study employed a sample of high school physical science students (N = 75) whose first language was Spanish and who were currently developing English language proficiency. It used quasi-experimental methodology with treatment and comparison groups, during the normal operations of the public school classroom. It tested the effect of training with a textbook summarization method and with an academic conversation strategy on the comprehension of state-adopted science textbook readings. Posttest scores of both groups were analyzed using an ANOVA. Posttest scores of treatment group members were analyzed in relation to prior science knowledge, reading level, gender, and level of English proficiency using a factorial ANOVA. Findings suggest that the treatment had a positive impact on the achievement of students who had a low level of English language proficiency. In light of the at-risk nature of this population, given low socioeconomic status and that a high percentage of families are migrant workers, this in encouraging. The basic premise of the treatment appears promising. Evidence collected pertaining to its effect relative to students’ general ESOL level, science background knowledge, literacy skills, and gender neither confirmed nor denied the viability of the strategy. The further significance of this study is that it adds to the body of research on strategies to support English Learners.

Abstract:
This study explores similarities and differences in turntaking structures in the discourse of a group of typical children and one atypical child. Nineteen normally developing pre-school children and one atypical child were videotaped reading books with their parents. Each of the nineteen parent/child dyads were videotaped at the child's pre-school, and the atypical child (Ben) was videotaped at school both with a trained educator and with his mother. Analyses of the resulting videotapes yielded categorical data on types and structures of turntaking. The utterances of the typical children appeared most often in the category of response. This finding also applied to Ben when he was interacting with his teacher, although when Ben was interacting with his mother the majority of his utterances appeared in the category of imitation. Parents of the typical children used primarily responses, mands and turnabouts. The greatest difference between Ben's mother and the other parents is found in the categories of response and mand which were lower in the case of Ben's mother. It appears that conversational turntaking in a language delayed child is different from the pattern of conversational turntaking in a group of typical children. Abstract:
This study is based on the teaching model of reading French as a foreign language by university students who are beginners in this language in Brazil. After presenting the essential topics of this didactic approach and the issues related to the teaching-learning process when reading in a foreign language, in which the lexical acquisition plays a major role, we present the basics of lexicology and lexical semantics, and finally we portray the works developed in pedagogical lexicography, in which we place this study. Regardless of its dissemination among Latin America students and of its continuous reformulation to account for new learning situations, this teaching method contains some gaps. The gaps refer to a critical issue for a large number of readers: the lack of lexical knowledge. This issue relates not only to a lack of vocabulary knowledge, but also to the ability of word learning. In this study, this question has been further studied based on two experimental researches. The first one, using a more prospective approach, aims at identifying the role of the dictionary–especially bilingual dictionaries–in the reading process and the effects of dictionary use in the construction of meaning. The second one compares the use of two lexicographic instruments: a bilingual dictionary and a pedagogical dictionary for learners of French as a foreign language. Both researches yield important information about the integration of a lexical study with this teaching model; additionally, they are complemented by the analysis of the dictionaries available to this target audience. In this way, we can set methodological principles to build a pedagogical dictionary that helps students in reading activities and that supports vocabulary acquisition on the basis of functional lexicography

Abstract:

Abstract:
The purpose of this work is to investigate and shed light on how children’s literature is used in the after – school center, if there are any conversations with children’s literature as a starting point and if children’s literature and conversation from the books are used as tools to let students process issues concerning themselves, their lives and their thoughts. The servey was conducted in the form of a web-based questionnaire and the questionnaire responses were then analyzed from three different theoretical perspectives: a socio-cultural perspective, an environmental psychological perspective and Aidan Chamber’s model The Reading Circle. From the point of view of the socio-cultural perspective, communication and language are in focus and the interplay between the common thinking and the individual’s thinking is a prerequisite for development and learning. This perspective is set in relation to how conversation about read books can become tools for students’ development. The environmental psychological perspective in this work is about how noise affects students’ concentration and analytical ability, how the design of the room affects students’ views of both themselves and what the room should be used for and that the environment is also a matter of social impact. The reading circle offers a holistic perspective on the reading process, which is about choosing a book, reading the book, being able to reflect on and react to the book’s content, and then want to start over with the next book. Conclusions drawn from this study are that children’s literature is used in leisure centers to varying degrees, that the physical environment in the form of, for example, limited opportunities for quiet places affects the extent of student’s individual reading, and that books discussions and structured reflections based on children’s literature occur to a very limited extent.

The aim of this study is to find out how teachers describe reading and book conversations in the classroom in practice and how these can develop pupils' languages. The aim is also to investigate how teachers describe that they engage all pupils' in book conversations. In order to achieve the aim of the study, empirical material has been collected on the basis of Bryman's (2011) proposal for a qualitative method with semi-structured interviews. The study is based on the socio-cultural theory that explains that pupils learn in interaction and through communication with others. The conclusion based on the study's result is that teachers describe that reading and book conversations are of great importance for pupils' language development. Pupils' language is developed when they are given the opportunity to, in groups or individually, strengthen themselves in listening and retelling a spoken text. In order to promote language development among pupils in connection with book conversations, the teachers use different teaching aids to adapt the teaching. The teachers are crucial for enabling pupils to develop and succeed, and therefore they can adapt the reading and book talk occasions to pupils in different ways.

Abstract:
This study investigated the effects of a shared book reading professional development program on preschool educators’ ability to engage children in book-related conversations and promote word learning. 20 preschool educators were video-recorded reading two books to a small group of children at pre- and posttest eight weeks apart. Educators in the experimental group (n = 10) participated in professional development that included classroom instruction and individualized coaching. The control group remained on the waitlist. All video-recordings were transcribed and coded. Results indicated that educators in the experimental group included significantly more questions, responsive statements, and lexical diversity in their book-related talk compared to the control group. Further, they facilitated longer book-related conversations and had more long conversations (i.e., five turns or longer). Finally, conversations that included inferential talk resulted in the longest conversations. These findings suggest that professional development can enhance educators’ responsiveness during shared book reading.

Abstract:
Reading practices in high school English language arts should lead students to write richer, more developed responses to literature. Teacher-led, reflective, and performance-based instructional modes were combined with either talk or writing to produce six activities for enhancing response. A repeated measures design varied the order of the six learning activities for three classes (n=44) in a Midwest suburban high school. Later written responses were scored for interpretation, response, and appreciation. Pearson correlations revealed the task and criteria were reliable. Analyses of variance (ANOVA) found that for interpretation and response, talking led to higher achievement. Conversely, writing was nearly superior to talk for appreciation. Practice and feedback may be more significant than instructional condition for raising the quality of response.

Full text
Abstract:
This Old Man is comprised of a childhood section from a larger novel that interweaves the experiences of a group of childhood friends who, as adults, are compelled to return to their home town to face an evil they were haunted by as children. Due to word count constraints, the chapters submitted for the Thesis are from the ‘childhood section’ of the novel only. The novel in its entirety explores how adult selves are shaped by their past experiences. This first thematic drive is explored alongside another, which focusses on ideas of agency and humanity in the face of these deterministic forces. The larger work responds to Stephen King’s IT. It employs the tropes of the Horror genre to tell a story about manhood, boyhood, and what happens in between; a story about the summer when, as kids, the characters were hunted by The Farmer and his Doberman, and the summer nearly twenty years later when they return to finish the battle as adults: adults with inner demons that may prove to be stronger than the Farmer himself; adults who are facing the traumas of their past and attempting to find the capacity to forge and maintain relationships; adults who must finally grow up and accept responsibility for their actions and the fate of their lives. ‘An Act of Reading and Writing’ Why am I drawn to heroic genre fiction? Why did I choose it as a mode to explore agency? And why did Horror end up being the mode in which to do it? What is it about the reinvention of these familiar structures that on the one hand fills a deep need for stability, but on the other challenges the way I think about the world? Why do reading and writing act as a meditative process? What is it about fiction that evades essentialism, and how do prescriptive structures like the Hero’s Journey act as a meditative space that open themselves up to interpret the world around us? This exegesis explores these questions through a framework of discussions with texts that informed my work. Using a humanist framework centred on the agency of the individual to affect change, as argued for by Edward Said, I explore how literature acts as a kind of humanist theology in the post-modern world, as envisaged by Andy Mousley. I then explore how heroic structures in genre fiction might be a meditation on agency.

Abstract:
Recent research has revealed a gender gap in reading attitudes and achievement. Broadly speaking, when compared with girls, boys display a more negative attitude towards reading and perform less well on measures of reading achievement. Yet, why boys appear to have such difficulties with reading and why girls appear to have fewer difficulties with it has yet to be fully explored. This thesis examines the talk of a group of grade five and six students at a multi-cultural, multi-lingual, mixed socio-economic urban elementary school, concerning their ideas of gender normative behaviour, gendered reading practices and the consequences of non-normative gender performances or gender crossing behaviour. Using Critical Socio-Cultural theories of literacy and learning and Feminist Post-Structuralist theories of gender and identity, this year long ethnographic study reveals that students' investments in their gender identities may help to create and maintain the gender gap in reading attitudes and achievement. In particular, boys' investment in maintaining a heteronormative masculine identity may interfere with their participation in school based print literacy. The implications of these findings for bridging the gender reading gap are discussed. In addition, this thesis raises questions about the simplicity of current conceptions of the gender reading gap that depict boys as victims and girls as victors in school. This thesis adds to research that calls for a more complex understanding of issues of gender, "race" and class in .contemporary classrooms.

Paterson, Marnie Leigh. "Writing work as social practice: examining instructional conversations within a Reading Recovery® lesson." 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/1993/30384.

Abstract:
Framed by Social Constructivist theories of learning, this project employed a descriptive case study approach to investigate the types of social and verbal interactions that occurred as four Reading Recovery teachers worked with their respective students to devise and record a brief message during the 10-12 minute writing section of a Reading Recovery lesson. Data was collected over a period of two months and each teacher was observed working with the same student on two separate occasions. The conversations that transpired were audiotaped and transcribed and the cognitive and affective dimensions of the teachers’ communications were specifically examined. Findings indicate that effective teaching interactions more often arose when the teachers continually endeavored to understand the meanings behind their students’ words and actions. When teachers considered their students’ perspectives, when they gave them cognitive space to think, speak, and act, and when they designed literacy activities that centered on children’s demonstrated understandings, they ensured their students’ continued motivation thereby fostering cognitive development.

Abstract:
Abstract The purpose of the 6-week qualitative study was to explore how Grade 1 children responded to five picturebooks by Anthony Browne during interactive read-alouds. The 13 participants and the other non-participants were organized into four mixed gender and mixed reading-ability groups. Data included transcripts from 20 small group read-aloud sessions and field notes that documented additional student affective responses to the texts. Other data included the children’s drawings that were completed after each picturebook small group read-aloud session, as well as transcripts of the students’ individual interviews about their artistic responses. Coding of student conversation turns during the read-aloud sessions revealed the identification of six categories of statements. These six categories were then applied to the students’ individual interview data to facilitate comparison between the two settings. The artwork and interviews of three students were analyzed as three individual cases and represented a sample of student readers of differing abilities. Data analysis of the read-aloud session transcripts revealed that labeling statements accounted for approximately one-third of all student comments. The remaining students’ statements were categorized as following: approximately one-quarter were character description, one-fifth were ‘other,’ (i.e. indecipherable statements and/or off-topic comments), approximately one-tenth were character feeling, less than one-tenth were autobiographical, and a small amount were intertextual in nature. The comparison of the three focus children’s individual interviews to their small group conversations revealed that the children generated a greater number of autobiographical statements during the individual interviews about their art. Implications for research and pedagogy included teaching and conducting research about visual literacy that involves pre- and post-treatment study, and examining children’s conversations about characters in picturebooks by numerous authors.
