Kornienko, Natalya V., ed. “I beg you to reply me to the point...” Readers’ letters to M.A. Sholokhov. 1929–1955. Scientific edition. А.М. Gorky Institute of World Literature of the Russian Academy of Sciences, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.22455/978-5-9208-6619-2.

Full text
Abstract:
The book represents the collection of reader’s letters addressed to M.A. Sholokhov — it is one of the largest and most unique in the history of Russian literature. These first published readers’ letters, 1929–1955 from the archives of Moscow and Veshenskaya stanitsa (M.A. Sholokhov Museum-Reserve and Sholokhov family archive) recreate in a new way the picture of the historical and literary process of the twentieth century, reveal the content of dialogue between Sholokhov and his readers, expanding and deepening not only the perception of the history of Russian literature of the Soviet era, but also the twentieth century as a whole in Russian culture — as the century of a reader. The book is addressed to philologists, historians, sociologists and to a wide general readership.

Bianca-Jeanette, Schröder. Couriers and Conventions in Cicero’s Epistolary Network. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198804208.003.0003.

Full text
Abstract:
There was no postal service in antiquity: transmission of letters therefore always involved someone who carried the letter from sender to addressee. This chapter shows that the courier has to be inserted, as an important figure in his own right, into the complex and fascinating picture of etiquette and interaction that defined ancient epistolary communication. With special reference to the correspondence of Cicero, Schröder demonstrates that the author of a letter had to take into account not only the letter’s recipient and other potential readers within his circle (and beyond) but also, and every bit as much, the courier, who loomed over the potential contents of any letter as an inevitable frame and first filter. Detailed readings of passages from Cicero’s epistolary corpus illustrate the implications of this hitherto much-neglected aspect of letter-writing for our understanding of his correspondence.

Niebuhr, Karl-Wilhelm. The Communities Configured in the Letter of James. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198804208.003.0013.

Full text
Abstract:
The chapter explores how the Letter of James configures communities, distinguishing between the real (or historical) readers, the implied readers, and the letter’s reception history. During late antiquity and the Middle Ages the letter was perceived as a foundational instruction from James, the brother of the Lord, one of the leading figures of the Jerusalem church. At the level of the implied readers, the text makes use of the genre of Diaspora letter, which allows for the creation of a sense of common values and shared faith with the addressees. Finally, at the level of historical communities, the Letter of James appears to address a community of Jewish origins searching for a specifically ‘Christian’ identity in the midst of a dominant Mediterranean culture.
