Abstract:
This paper is the executive summary for the research project 'Re-Engineering the New Product Introduction Process.' The project is made up of a number of portfolio submissions describing differing areas of the research. The key reason for the research was to identify a way in which a case study company could radically improve its time to market for new products by improving the process followed. An action research methodology was employed and project team used to aid the development and validation of the process and supporting tools. The result of the work was a proceduralised process for the introduction of new products, Coupled with detailed supporting tools and techniques. This paper summarises the details of the new process and describes the supporting projects. The levels of validation and implementation for all tile projects are also described as these were at differing levels of implementation within the case study organisation.

Maruping, Nkabeng Thato. "The re-introduction of captive bred cheetah into a wild environment, Makulu Makete Wildlife Reserve, Limpopo province, South Africa." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/26057.

Full text
Abstract:
The conservation benefits of animals in captivity are limited to education and genetic preservation. However, where species or sub-species are critically endangered, the release of captive bred animals into the wild can be used as a strategy to supplement existing populations or to form new founder populations. Cheetahs Acinonyx jubatus born in captivity have no prior experience of survival in wild circumstances. Captive bred cheetahs are currently the greatest source of individuals. This project worked in conjunction with IUCN reintroduction guidelines and pre-existing recommendations in an attempt to develop an ideal methodology of reintroducing captive bred cheetah into the wild. Three captive bred cheetahs, one female and two males, were reintroduced onto Makulu Makete Wildlife Reserve, a predator proofed reserve in the Limpopo province of South Africa, as part of an experimental rehabilitation project. The cheetahs had to lose their homing instinct, be habituated to researchers, become accustomed to eating venison, chewing skin, infrequent large meals and strength development within the three months spent in the enclosures. The cheetahs were habituated to the field researchers on foot and to research vehicles for ease of monitoring. A soft release methodology was used to ease the cheetahs into the environment. Upon release they were tracked twice daily to observe behavior and interaction with their environment. The duration of the project was 20 months which includes enclosure time. The establishment of a home range indicated that the resource need of the cheetahs was satisfied. Eight habitat types were identified in the study area and all cheetahs encompassed part of each in their home range. Though the hunting instinct was present in all the cheetahs, the appropriate hunting techniques and prey selection had to be learned overtime. There was no difference between what was stalked and what was caught. From the observed kills, prey weight ranged from small <40 kg to medium <160 kg. This weight range is comparable to wild cheetahs that select prey within the same range. Each cheetah hunted every four to five days and consumed three to five kilograms of meat per day. Nine prey species were identified, two of which were not detected during direct observations. In the collection of scat, the trained dog found approximately a scat per hour while each direct observation by the researchers took approximately 10 hours. These captive bred cheetahs had to learn how to hunt and how to select appropriate prey thus addressing learned behavior versus instinct. Given the frequency and intensity of injuries sustained and the extensive human influence in the form of veterinary treatment, the reintroduction was not a success. However the techniques developed and modified are relevant for future endeavors‟.

Abstract:
Single crystal (SX) superalloys have wide application in the high pressure turbine section of aero and industrial gas turbine engines due to the unique combination of properties and performance. Since introduction of single crystal casting technology, SX alloy development has focused on increased temperature capability, and major improvements in alloy performance have been associated with the introduction of new alloying elements, including rhenium (Re) and ruthenium (Ru). 3% Re-containing second generation alloys, such as CMSX-4®, PWA 1484 and Rene’ N5 have seen the greatest market utilization and have become the benchmark alloys for comparing new alloy developments. However, Re and Ru are rare elements with limited production/availability and corresponding high costs. This has resulted in significant escalation of SX alloy costs, and consequently, there has been much interest in the development of improved SX superalloys with lower Re or no Re content compared to second generation alloys. Cannon-Muskegon® has developed two new SX superalloys: 1.5% Re CMSX®−8 alloy and CMSX®−7 alloy, which contains no Re, as alternatives to first and second generation alloys for applications which require slightly less ultra high temperature capability compared to CMSX-4 alloy or the improved CMSX-4(SLS) alloy. This paper provides an overview of development and characterization of these SX alloys and alloy modifications, CMSX-8 (SLS) and CMSX-8[B/C](SLS).

Full text
Abstract:
LES (Large-Eddy Simulation) computations for a high-lift low-pressure turbine profile equipped with the span-wise groove on the suction surface are done to investigate the mechanism of the surface groove for separated flow transition control under steady inflow conditions, employing the dynamic Smagorinsky model. In addition to the baseline case (no groove), three groove positions which depend on the relative position of the groove trailing edge and the separation point on the suction surface are considered at two Reynolds numbers (Re, based on the inlet velocity and axial chord length). The results show that all grooves can reduce the calculated loss for Re = 50000, due to the further upstream transition inception in the separated shear layer. The analyses indicate two kinds of control mechanism such as the thinning of boundary layer behind the groove and the introduction of disturbances within the groove, depending on the groove position and Reynolds number. At Re = 50000, for the groove located upstream of the separation point, the reason for the further upstream transition inception location is the thinning of boundary layer behind the groove, and for the groove located downstream of the separation point, the reason is the introduction of disturbances within the groove. At Re = 100000, disturbances can also be generated within the groove located upstream of the separation point, promoting earlier transition inception.

Abstract:
Abstract The production cost is one of the most important drivers for product competitiveness. For increasing profits, a manufacturing process re-engineering is mandatory. This practice passes through systematic procedures for process selection, cost estimation and results analysis. This paper presents a method for evaluating different manufacturing alternatives for cost reduction. This method, composed of eight steps (most of them retrieved from the scientific literature), permits engineers to consider important aspects, such as the choice of cost estimation tools, the collection of data related to production processes, the impact related to the introduction of new production processes and the interpretation of results. Authors adopted such method for evaluating economic benefits of introducing a new manufacturing technology (i.e. investment casting) for three components of a food packaging machine. The adoption of the proposed method leads to compare investment casting vs. machining. The paper presents a detailed discussion of the economic benefits (return on investment, cash flows and manufacturing cost breakdown) related to the introduction of the investment casting technology.

Abstract:
Aiming at (re)thinking memory politics in contexts of ongoing total violence against non-white bodies, I propose, in this working paper, to engage with Maria Beatriz Nascimento’s multifaceted notion of quilombo. Once understood as alternative regimes of conviviality that entail existential (beyond material) aspects, Nascimento’s notion of quilombo enables critical access to the onto-epistemological basis on which memory politics generally takes place. After primary considerations about violence and the archives, I highlight three main aspects of Nascimento’s notion of quilombo to (re) think memory politics: (1) the introduction of a temporality that displaces underlying analytical assumptions of a linear, progressive and sequential time; (2) the idea of paz quilombola, which allows analytical space for “opacity” in the generation of knowledge; (3) the link between personal and collective intergenerational memory that, for Nascimento, requires the fostering of spaces of body encounters.
