Abstract:
Māori communities have in the past had a strained relationship with many researchers who found New Zealand Māori communities to be fruitful sites for research. Māori researchers have developed over time and joined the research community often with some reluctance and with pressures from those communities to make positive contributions to the preservation of their own family history. The development of Māori tertiary institutions such as Te Wānanga o Raukawa now have the potential to make a significant contribution to research and knowledge as every student undertakes research projects within their own communities, building research capacity. Tensions and opportunities are created together for these new and emerging researchers who build on the idea of historical research being a “spiritual journey” yet are challenged by research directions and teams which build their research on different foundations. New opportunities are presented to be involved in large multidisciplinary research teams, yet tensions also arise with ethical issues, supervision, research partnerships, differing priorities and identifying who the recipients of the research will be. The priorities and challenges which face community-based researchers are explored in this paper particularly those who are new and emerging as researchers from Māori based educational institutions.

Abstract:
Molecular genetic analyses were used to reconstruct phylogenetic relationships and estimate divergence times for Raukaua species and their close relatives. A monophyletic group identified as the ‘greater Raukaua clade’ was circumscribed, with eight representative species; its basal divergence was estimated at c. 70 Mya, possibly after Zealandia had separated from Gondwana. Raukaua is paraphyletic because of the placement of Motherwellia, Cephalaralia, Cheirodendron and Schefflera s.s. The phylogeny supports a more narrowly circumscribed Raukaua that includes the New Zealand but not the South American or Tasmanian representatives. Ancestors of the monophyletic South American and Tasmanian Raukaua and the mainland Australian Motherwellia and Cephalaralia diverged at c. 66 Mya and their current disjunction may be vicariant, with overland dispersal between Australia and South America, possibly via Antarctica. Vicariance is also a likely mechanism for divergence at c. 57 Mya of the monophyletic Motherwellia, Cephalaralia and Tasmanian Raukaua. The common ancestor of New Zealand Raukaua¸ Cheirodendron and Schefflera s.s. is inferred to have existed c. 62 Mya in New Zealand, before the marine incursions during the Oligocene, implying that New Zealand Raukaua and Schefflera s.s. survived the inundation period or speciated outside New Zealand and subsequently colonised. Ancestors of Cheirodendron split from New Zealand Raukaua c. 43 Mya and dispersed over vast expanses of the south-western Pacific to Hawaii.

Abstract:
Aims The purpose of this study was to compare the radiological outcomes of manual versus robotic-assisted medial unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA). Methods Postoperative radiological outcomes from 86 consecutive robotic-assisted UKAs (RAUKA group) from a single academic centre were retrospectively reviewed and compared to 253 manual UKAs (MUKA group) drawn from a prior study at our institution. Femoral coronal and sagittal angles (FCA, FSA), tibial coronal and sagittal angles (TCA, TSA), and implant overhang were radiologically measured to identify outliers. Results When assessing the accuracy of RAUKAs, 91.6% of all alignment measurements and 99.2% of all overhang measurements were within the target range. All alignment and overhang targets were simultaneously met in 68.6% of RAUKAs. When comparing radiological outcomes between the RAUKA and MUKA groups, statistically significant differences were identified for combined outliers in FCA (2.3% vs 12.6%; p = 0.006), FSA (17.4% vs 50.2%; p < 0.001), TCA (5.8% vs 41.5%; p < 0.001), and TSA (8.1% vs 18.6%; p = 0.023), as well as anterior (0.0% vs 4.7%; p = 0.042), posterior (1.2% vs 13.4%; p = 0.001), and medial (1.2% vs 14.2%; p < 0.001) overhang outliers. Conclusion Robotic system navigation decreases alignment and overhang outliers compared to manual UKA. Given the association between component placement errors and revision in UKA, this strong significant improvement in accuracy may improve implant survival. Abstract:
The Raukaua genus of the family Araliaceae consists of 3 species, R. anomalus, R. edgerleyi and R. simplex, all endemic to New Zealand. The essential oil of R. edgerleyi and R. simplex consisted largely of monoterpenes. Limonene was the most abundant (23%) in R. edgerleyi and myrcene the most abundant (34%) in R. simplex. The oil of R. simplex lacked any significant sesquiterpenoids whereas bicyclogermacrene constituted 12% of the oil of R. edgerleyi. The oil of R. anomalus contained monoterpenes in low abundance and the sesquiterpenoids germacrene-B (15%) and γ-muurolene (16%) dominated the composition of this oil. The oil of R. edgerleyi had a pleasant fresh green aroma but the low yields of all three oils excluded them from potential commercial use.

Abstract:
Aims This systematic review aims to compare the precision of component positioning, patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs), complications, survivorship, cost-effectiveness, and learning curves of MAKO robotic arm-assisted unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (RAUKA) with manual medial unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (mUKA). Methods Searches of PubMed, MEDLINE, and Google Scholar were performed in November 2021 according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis statement. Search terms included “robotic”, “unicompartmental”, “knee”, and “arthroplasty”. Published clinical research articles reporting the learning curves and cost-effectiveness of MAKO RAUKA, and those comparing the component precision, functional outcomes, survivorship, or complications with mUKA, were included for analysis. Results A total of 179 articles were identified from initial screening, of which 14 articles satisfied the inclusion criteria and were included for analysis. The papers analyzed include one on learning curve, five on implant positioning, six on functional outcomes, five on complications, six on survivorship, and three on cost. The learning curve was six cases for operating time and zero for precision. There was consistent evidence of more precise implant positioning with MAKO RAUKA. Meta-analysis demonstrated lower overall complication rates associated with MAKO RAUKA (OR 2.18 (95% confidence interval (CI) 1.06 to 4.49); p = 0.040) but no difference in re-intervention, infection, Knee Society Score (KSS; mean difference 1.64 (95% CI -3.00 to 6.27); p = 0.490), or Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Arthritis Index (WOMAC) score (mean difference -0.58 (95% CI -3.55 to 2.38); p = 0.700). MAKO RAUKA was shown to be a cost-effective procedure, but this was directly related to volume. Conclusion MAKO RAUKA was associated with improved precision of component positioning but was not associated with improved PROMs using the KSS and WOMAC scores. Future longer-term studies should report functional outcomes, potentially using scores with minimal ceiling effects and survival to assess whether the improved precision of MAKO RAUKA results in better outcomes. Abstract:
Essential oils from three of the eleven endemic New Zealand species of Pseudopanax, P. arboreus, P. discolor and P. lessonii, were found to have a fairly uniform composition which was different from that of the oils of Raukaua species that were formerly classified in the Pseudopanax genus. Oils of the three Pseudopanax species all contained significant proportions of viridiflorol and a closely related unidentified hydroazulene alcohol in common. In addition, the oil of P. arboreus contained bicyclogermacrene, linalool and long chain hydrocarbons. The oil of P. discolor contained nerolidol in abundance (36.3%) together with linalool and epi-α-muurolol. The oil of P. lessonii contained a complex mixture of sesquiterpene alcohols including epi-α-muurolol and a mixture of long chain hydrocarbons. Nerolidol and linalool provided the oil of P. discolor with a pleasant floral aroma, but the yield of oil was very low (0.01%).

Abstract:
AbstractPollen analyses and radiocarbon dates from the bottom sediments in the Kaali main crater suggested that the crater group is at least 4000–5000 years old. Investigations of silicate impact micro-spherules in surrounding mires (Raukas et al. 1995) put the age about 7500–7600 yr BP. Recently we found both silicate and iron microspherules from organic sediments below well-dated beach ridge in Reo site what supports the conclusions that the most realistic age of the Kaali craters is 7600±50 14C BP (8335–8537 cal BP) and the meteorite fall was from SSE to NNW.

Abstract:
Brassaiopsis angustifolia K.M. Feng belongs to the family Araliaceae, and is an endangered shrub species in southwest China. Despite the importance of this species, the plastid genome has not been sequenced and analyzed. In this study, the complete plastid genome of B. angustifolia was sequenced, analyzed, and compared to the eight species in the Araliaceae family. Our study reveals that the complete plastid genome of B. angustifolia is 156,534 bp long, with an overall GC content of 37.9%. The chloroplast genome (cp) encodes 133 genes, including 88 protein-coding genes, 37 transfer RNA (tRNA) genes, and eight ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes. All protein-coding genes consisted of 21,582 codons. Among the nine species of Araliaceae, simple sequence repeats (SSRs) and five large repeat sequences were identified with total numbers ranging from 37 to 46 and 66 to 78, respectively. Five highly divergent regions were successfully identified that could be used as potential genetic markers of Brassaiopsis and Asian Palmate group. Phylogenetic analysis of 47 plastomes, representing 19 genera of Araliaceae and two related families, was performed to reconstruct highly supported relationships for the Araliaceae, which highlight four well-supported clades of the Hydrocotyle group, Greater Raukaua group, Aralia-Panax group, and Asian Palmate group. The genus Brassaiopsis can be divided into four groups using internal transcribed spacer (ITS) data. The results indicate that plastome and ITS data can contribute to investigations of the taxonomy, and phylogeny of B. angustifolia. This study provides a theoretical basis for species identification and future biological research on resources of the genus Brassaiopsis.

Abstract:
Romaldas Rubikas, Paulius Gradauskas, Diana SamiatinaKauno medicinos universiteto Torakalinės chirurgijos klinika,Eivenių g. 2, Kaunas, LT-50009El. paštas: romaldasr@email.lt Įvadas / tikslas Ryklės ir stemplės sandūros užpakalinėje sienoje virš ryklės apatinio sutraukiamojo raumens, musculus constrictor pharyngis inferior, atsiradęs gleivinės maišelis vadinamas faringoezofaginiu arba Cenkerio (vok. Zenker) divertikulu. Reikšminiai žodžiai: faringoezofaginis (Cenkerio) divertikulas, rezekcija, fiksacija, stemplės viršutinis raukas, įpjova Surgical treatment of pharyngoesophageal (Zenker) diverticula Romaldas Rubikas, Paulius Gradauskas, Diana Samiatina Background / Objective Pharyngoesophageal (Zenker) diverticulum is a mucosal pouch presenting posterolateral to the hypopharynx just above the level of the cricopharyngeal muscle, i. e. in the main part of the upper esophageal sphincter. The primary pathway in the pathogenesis of Zenker diverticulum appears to be failure of coordinated relaxation of the upper esophageal sphincter at the time a food bolus reaches that position in the hypopharynx. Surgical care of this disease involves mainly two methods: resection of the diverticulum and myotomy of the cricopharyngeal with esophageal muscles combined with diverticulum suspension to the prevertebral fascia or posterior wall of the pharynx. The aim of this retrospective study was to analyse postoperative results and reveal advantages and disadvantages of both these methods. Patients and methods From 1990 to 2004, 58 patients were operated on due to Zenker diverticulum. Resection of the diverticulum, myotomy and diverticulum suspension were performed for 43 and 15 patients, respectively. Perioperative data were collected from case reports. Results Hospital stay was shorter (p = 0.004) in patients who underwent myotomy and diverticulum suspension than in those who had resection of the diverticulum (10.8 ± 4.6 days versus 6.3 ± 1.6 days). Esophageal fistula occurred in two (4.6%) cases after resection of the diverticulum. This complication caused one (2.3%) patient death. There were no severe postoperative complications following myotomy and diverticulum suspension. Conclusion Myotomy and diverticulum suspension is technically more complicated than its resection. However, myotomy and diverticulum suspension have significant clinical advantages and, therefore, should be recommended as the main method for the surgical care of Zenker diverticulum. Keywords: pharyngoesophageal (Zenker) diverticulum, resection, suspension, upper esophageal sphincter, myotomy

Abstract:
The concept of the Māuipreneur is a metaphor that brings together two apparently unrelated domains interacting to create new meaning or insight that did not exist before the metaphor was encountered. In this case the two unrelated domains are the Māui stories of Aotearoa New Zealand and that of the entrepreneur thus creating the Māuipreneur. The Māuipreneur is the entrepreneur who seizes the opportunity created in the space left void in the movement from tapu (restricted space) to noa (unrestricted space) and through research, development and planning fills it with product. The paper presents a discussion about the Māuipreneur and explains how the theory and associated model relating to the Māuipreneur is found in the stories of the ancestor hero, Māui-Tikitiki-A-Tāranga. This paper was first presented at the Tauira-a-Māui Symposium, Te Whare Wānanga o Raukawa, Otaki, New Zealand, 11-13 November 2009.

Abstract:
Artikkelin keskeiset tutkimuskysymykset koskevat tekstuaalisten keinojen käyttöä loitsuaineistossa. Kyseiset jaksot muodostavat rekisterin, jolla tietäjä korostaa omaa auktoriteettiaan. Eri rekisterien piirteet muodostavat rekisteriytyneitä tunnuksia, jotka viittaavat esittäjien ja puhuteltavien välisiin sosiaalisiin suhteisiin. Artikkeli osallistuu niin ollen keskusteluun emootioiden esittämisestä tietäjien loitsuissa ja jatkaa rekisterinäkökulman hyödyntämistä kalevalamittaisen runouden tutkimuksen kehyksessä.

Abstract:
AbstractRobotic-assisted unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (RAUKA) is an emerging area of interest. The purpose of this study was to compare (1) different patient demographic profiles; (2) annual primary and revision utilization rates; (3) risk factors for revision procedures; and (4) survivorship between RAUKA and manual UKA (MUKA). Using the PearlDiver database, patients who underwent RAUKA or MUKA between 2005 and 2014 within the Medicare database were identified, yielding a total of 35,061 patients (RAUKA = 13,617; manual = 21,444). Patient demographics (age, gender, comorbidities, Charlson-Comorbidity Index, and geographic region) were compared between cohorts. Annual primary and revision utilization rates as well as risk factors for revision procedures were also compared. Kaplan–Meier survivorship was also calculated. The Pearson χ2 test was used to test for significance in patient demographics, whereas the Welch t-test was used to compare the incidence of revisions as well as the revision burden (proportion of revisions to total sum of primary and revision procedures). Multivariate binomial logistic regression analysis was performed to compare risk factors for revision procedures. There were statistically significant differences in RAUKA versus MUKA patients with respect to age (p < 0.001), gender (p < 0.001), and region (p < 0.001). RAUKA procedures performed increased over 12-fold compared with manual, which increased only 4.5-fold. RAUKA procedures had significantly lower revision incidence (0.99 vs. 4.24%, p = 0.003) and revision burden (0.91 vs. 4.23%, p = 0.005) compared with manuals. For patients undergoing RAUKA, normal (19–24 kg/m2) and obese (30–39 kg/m2) body mass index (p < 0.05), congestive heart failure (p = 0.004), hypothyroidism (p < 0.001), opioid dependency (p = 0.002), and rheumatoid arthritis (p < 0.001) were risk factors for a revision procedure. Kaplan–Meier survival curve 3 years following the index procedure to all-cause revisions demonstrated that RAUKA patients maintained nearly 100% survivorship compared with manual patients who had 97.5% survivorship. The data demonstrate increased utilization of RAUKA in the United States. The current data indicated that RAUKA has significantly lower revision rates and improved survivorship compared with patients undergoing non-RAUKA within Medicare patients.

"Accuracy of Intraoperative Mechanical Axis Alignment to Long-Leg Radiographs following Robotic-Arm–Assisted Unicompartmental Knee Arthroplasty." Abstract:
AbstractImproper alignment and implant positioning following unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA) has been shown to lead to postoperative pain and increase the incidence of revision procedures. The use of robotic-arm assistance for UKA (RAUKA) has become an area of interest to help overcome these challenges. The accuracy of intraoperative alignment compared with standing long-leg X-rays postoperatively following medial RAUKA has been in question. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to (1) determine final mean intraoperative coronal alignment in extension utilizing an image based intraoperative navigation system, and (2) compare final intraoperative alignment to 6-week weight-bearing (WB) long-leg X-rays. Patients who underwent RAUKA for medial compartmental osteoarthritis were identified from January 1, 2018, to August 31, 2019, through our institution's joint registry. The query yielded 136 (72 right and 64 left) patients with a mean age of 72.02 years and mean body mass index (BMI) of 28.65 kg/m2 who underwent RAUKA. Final intraoperative alignment was compared with WB long leg X-rays 6 weeks postoperatively by measuring the mechanical alignment. Statistical analysis was primarily descriptive. Pearson's correlation coefficient was used to determine the relationship between intraoperative alignment to 6-week alignment. A p-value of <0.05 was considered statistically significant. Mean intraoperative coronal alignment after resections and trialing was 4.39 varus ± 2.40 degrees for the right knee, and 4.81 varus ± 2.29 degrees for the left knee. WB long-leg X-rays 6 weeks postoperatively demonstrated mechanical axis alignment for the right and left knees to be 3.01 varus ± 2.10 and 3.7 varus ± 2.38 degrees, respectively. This resulted in a change in alignment of 1.36 ± 1.76 and 1.12 ± 1.84 degrees for the right and left knees, respectively (p < 0.05). Pearson's correlation coefficient demonstrated a correlation of 0.69 between intraoperative to long-leg-X-ray alignment. RAUKA demonstrates excellent consistency when comparing postoperative WB long-leg X-rays to final intraoperative image-based non-WB alignment.

Abstract:
The importance of early childhood education programmes has been widely established by researchers, but there has been little research on the outcomes of early childhood Kaupapa Māori educational initiatives in Aotearoa New Zealand. The aim of the research project reported here, He Piki Raukura, was to define Māori child behaviour constructs that may underlie positive Māori child development. We conducted in-depth interviews with two experts and 21 whānau participating in a Kaupapa Māori early years programme in Taranaki. Five themes were identified: local Māori identity; building whānau/ community; commitment to a shared kaupapa; clear and consistent processes; and dealing with issues positively. Through wānanga, four Māori child behaviour constructs were defined: tuakiri (secure local Māori identity); whānauranga (acting as a member of whānau); manawaroa (persisting despite difficulty); and piripono (integrity, commitment and responsibility for a shared kaupapa). These constructs provide novel ways of understanding child development that can be applied to explore how Kaupapa Māori early years initiatives might impact on development.

Abstract:
Plant species diversity may be seriously threatened in ecotone zones under global climate change. Therefore, keeping updated inventories of indicator species seems to be a good strategy for monitoring wild areas located in these strips. The database comes from an inventory of climbers and vascular epiphytes conducted in the Cerro Ñielol Natural Monument, a small protected area (89 hectares) located in Chile's Mediterranean-temperate phytogeographic region, within the boundaries of the city of Temuco, La Araucaína Region. The data represent the update of the first inventory carried out between 1980 and 1984. In this current contribution, data collection was carried out in 27 quadrats using the trails as transects. The data provide the record of 45 species (16 climbers, 15 epiphytes and 10 trees), including two accidental epiphytes (Acer psudoplatanus L. and Gavilea odoratissima (L.) Endl. ex Griseb.), two species that can be found as epiphytes or terricolous (Hymenophyllum tunbrigense (L.) Sm. and Nertera granadensis (Mutis ex L.f.) Druce) and one species (Chusquea quila Kunth) that can be found as terricolous and climber. Species of interest were recorded on live trees (n = 51), snags (n = 9), stumps (n = 4), fallen log (n = 5) and on the forest soil (n = 17). The most abundant climbers were Hydrangea serratifolia (Hook. & Arn.) F. Phil. (n = 77 stems), Lapageria rosea Ruiz & Pav. (n = 70 stems), Raukaua valdiviensis (Gay) Frodin (n = 48 stems) and Cissus striata Ruiz & Pav. (n = 33 stems). In contrast, the most abundant epiphytes were Hymenophyllum plicatum Kaulf. (n = 1728 fronds) and Hymenophyllum tunbrigense (L.) Sm. (n = 2375 fronds). These latter two species represent the highest frequency and abundance in the whole inventory, respectively. Several ecosystem traits are, in fact, new reports since the first inventory was conducted in 1980-1984; for example, the presence of the filmy fern Hymenophyllum tunbrigense, the record of the climber Elytropus chilensis , fallen logs or the species-host relationship. Accordingly, the database is made available in this manuscript. This study updates the climbers and vascular epiphyte species list in the Cerro Ñielol Natural Monument, a small patch of forest under severe anthropogenic pressure. This protected area is characterised by floristic elements of the Mediterranean and temperate phytogeographic region of Chile, in a zone where forests have been severely deforested. The database includes the record of 45 species – including six species that were not recorded in the first inventory – in 211 records. The main novelty of this contribution is the systematic classification of species, on ten traits rarely reported in a floristic inventory: (i) species taxonomic identity (as usual), (ii) species abundance (number of stems and fronds), (iii) habit (herb, shrub, subshrub, tree), (iv) growth form (accidental epiphyte, epiphyte, vine, liana, terricolous), (v) climbing mechanism (tendrils, adhesive roots, twining, scrambling), (vi) microhabitat (fallen log, footpath slope, soil, stump, trunk), (vii) host species (where appropriate), (viii) host condition (live, woody debris, snag), (ix) host diameter at breast height (DBH) and (x) target species found over 2.3 m on trees. Thirty years after the first inventory conducted between 1980 and 1984, the climber assemblage has remained relatively stable over time, although there are some differences in species composition. Specifically, the climber Elytropus chilensis are recorded in the current inventory, but the Mitraria coccinea (recorded in the first inventory) is not present. On the other hand, the epiphyte assemblage showed an increase in the species richness of filmy ferns, with five previously unrecorded species: Hymenophyllum cuneatum, H. dicranotrichum, H. pectinatum, H. peltatum and H. tunbrigense. One of the novel features was the presence of Sarmienta scandens and Synammia feuillei on a Pinus radiata D. Don tree. Additionally, the introduced species Acer pseudoplatanus is included, which is new to the Chilean vascular plant catalogue. All these data are available in the present manuscript.
