Abstract:
Arbetet delades in i tre huvuddelar: sensormodul, avlivningsanordning, och hissanordning.
This thesis is a continuation of a previous project where a concept for a mechanical sewer mountedrat-trap was developed. As more and more people are moving into cities, rats are becoming a bigger issue. Rats cancarry diseases and they can cause extensive damage. The goal of this thesis has been to developsubsystems for a mechanical sewer mounted rat-trap. Focus has been on developing the mechanismfor detecting rats and the mechanism for killing rats. The other subsystems have been developed inparallell in another work. The thesis was done in collaboration with the company Nomor, a swedish service company thatworks primarily with pest control. The work was split into three main parts: sensors, killing mechanism, and height adjustmentmechanism. CAD-models and mathematical models were produced for the three subsystems. A testrig and physical prototypes were produced to test the subsystems. The result ended up with a prototype consisting of the three mentioned subsystems. Some of thepurchased components did not work the way we anticipated wich meant some parts of the prototypedid not work

Abstract:
Urbanisation has historically led to issues with property damage and sickness, due to pests such as rats. Traditionally, rats have been exterminated using poison and manually loaded traps. As of late however, more effective and humane means of control have been developed, such as automatic and connected traps. As rats use the sewer system as we use the highway, connecting properties together, it is natural to place traps there. Nomor, a service company that performs pest control among other services, is interested in developing their own automatic mechanical sewer mounted trap for their own specific needs. In this thesis, the fastening mechanism and enclosure for such a trap are developed, with a concept developed in a previous collaboration used as a base. In this concept, a fastening mechanism is used to fasten the trap to the open pipes located in the sewer manholes. Rats passing underneath the trap are executed by the striking of a carbon dioxide driven cylinder. The enclosure surrounds the fastening mechanism and provides an interface between it and the executional unit, which is developed separately. The final prototype, which was made mostly using 3D-printing of PLA parts and some light metalwork, was tested and evaluated using a testing rig made from layered MDF pieces. The rig was constructed with an optimal scenario in mind, with dimensions like those in pipes which Nomor are likely to want to mount the trap in. The main use of the rig was to evaluate the dimensions and fastening abilities of the trap. Tests and analysis of the construction gave that the fastening mechanism and enclosure had potential to meet the requirements from Nomor in a reliable manner, if a more sophisticated method of mounting and a better mechanism for keeping the trap fastened was developed.

Myers, Rodd. "Access in a global rattan production network : a case study of rattan originating from Central Sulawesi, Indonesia and upgraded for sale in international markets." Thesis, University of East Anglia, 2015. https://ueaeprints.uea.ac.uk/58546/.

Full text
Abstract:
Forests and forest users are increasingly engaged in global scale markets that connect different stages of commodity production and retail. This thesis adopts a Global Production Network framing in order to investigate the case of rattan cane and furniture. I examine the ways in which actors benefit from rattan (a non-timber forest product) and elucidate power dynamics that explain how some actors are better positioned to benefit from rattan than others. My conceptual framework combines the literature on access with global production networks. I explore access starting in the forests of Sulawesi, Indonesia, moving to processing in larger centres in Sulawesi and Java, and ending in retail shops in the UK. This approach enables an analysis of rich mixed-method empirical data. My main findings centre around Indonesia’s rattan export ban, which benefited only elites and served to support the overall decline of global rattan furniture markets. Further, I elucidate the influence that access at one phase of production has on another and highlight understandings of access within the context of the greater production system. While most actors engage in activities and trading relations that serve access to markets, non-actors enable these actions, but for different benefits, such as strengthened authority. Lastly, I link aspects of materiality to access, demonstrating how the biogeophysical features of rattan shape actors’ ability to benefit from natural resource products and how markets shape material features of rattan. These findings are significant to the greater bodies of knowledge around the power dynamics of production networks and show the specific mechanisms by which elites capture benefits of rattan. They demonstrate the importance of appreciating the complexity of production networks, which in this case was ill-considered by policy makers and even industry elites themselves.

Full text
Abstract:

Shahimi, Salwa. "Systematics and evolution of the rattan genus Korthalsia Bl. (Arecaceae) with special reference to domatia." Thesis, University of Reading, 2018. http://centaur.reading.ac.uk/80258/.

Full text
Abstract:
Korthalsia is a genus of palms endemic to Malesian region and known for the several species that have close associations with ants. In this study, 101 new sequences were generated to add 18 Korthalsia species from Malaysia, Singapore, Myanmar and Vietnam to an existing but unpublished data set for calamoid palms. Three nuclear (prk, rpb2, and ITS) and three chloroplast (rps16, trnD-trnT and ndhF) markers were sampled and Bayesian Inference and Maximum Likelihood methods of tree reconstruction used. The new phylogeny of the calamoids was largely congruent with the published studies, though the taxon sampling was more thorough. Each of the three tribes of the Calamoideae appeared to be monophyletic. The Eugeissoneae was consistently resolved as sister to Calameae and Lepidocaryeae, and better resolved, better supported topologies below the tribal level were identified. Korthalsia is monophyletic, and novel hypotheses of species level relationships in Korthalsia were put forward. These hypotheses of species level relationships in Korthalsia served as a framework for the better understanding of the evolution of ocrea. The morphological and developmental study of ocrea in genus Korthalsia included detailed study using Light and Scanning Electron Microscopy for seven samples of 28 species of Korthalsia, in order to provide understanding of ocrea morphological traits. The new phylogenetic hypothesis allowed homology of ocrea types to be tested. Ancestral reconstructions revealed that the inflated ocreas are not homologous; based on these reconstructions, it is suggested that ocreas that provide domatia for ants evolved more than once. Despite their non-homology, ocreas are remarkably uniform developmentally. New time calibrated trees estimated the divergence time for the Korthalsia crown node to be 19.89 MYR and ocrea to appear 17.06 MYR consistent with the published estimates for other groups. A taxonomic treatment of the ant Korthalsia species was based on material gathered from four herbaria and during the two field trips. Ten species were recognised in the treatment. Descriptions, keys and distribution maps to all species are presented.
