Mattsson, Cecilia, and Ida Hermanseter.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This study has presented in detail statistics and research related to the elderly and aging population and the many housing options that are currently available to this age demographic. The research has shown that Assisted Living Facilities are rapidly becoming the preferred method of Elder Care in the US, so much so that they have begun to offer nursing care which is typically offered only by nursing homes. Further exploration demonstrated that there is a lack of consistency in these facilities, and the evidence points to the need for a new model of Assisted Living that will focus more on the individual while still providing necessary care. This discovery has lead to the concept of creating an Assisted Living Development as the new model to be considered by future designers and Assisted Living planners. The creation of this model has helped to outline a new methodology for the planning and organization of Assisted Living.

Full text
Abstract:
The relationship between population changes and economic growth has been debated since Malthus. Initially focusing on population growth, the notion of demographic dividend has shifted the attention to changes in age structures with an assumed window of opportunity that opens when falling birth rates lead to a relatively higher proportion of the working-age population. This has become the dominant paradigm in the field of population and development, and an advocacy tool for highlighting the benefits of family planning and fertility decline. While this view acknowledges that the dividend can only be realized if associated with investments in human capital, its causal trigger is still seen in exogenous fertility decline. In contrast, unified growth theory has established human capital as a trigger of both demographic transition and economic growth. We assess the relative importance of changing age structure and increasing human capital for economic growth for a panel of 165 countries during the time period of 1980-2015. The results show a clear dominance of improving education over age structure and give evidence that the demographic dividend is driven by human capital. Declining youth dependency ratios even show negative impacts on income growth when combined with low education. Based on a multidimensional understanding of demography that considers education in addition to age, and with a view to the additional effects of education on health and general resilience, we conclude that the true demographic dividend is a human capital dividend. Global population policies should thus focus on strengthening the human resource base for sustainable development.

Abstract:
Delegating responsibilities for ensuring data quality to employees close to operations is generally regarded as beneficial according to academia, rather than allowing the IT department full authority. The business employees are suitable for this task, as they have both a practical understanding for the business and a role that often is regarded as data-driven. However, delegation of responsibilities is argued to be one of the biggest barriers concerning data quality. This study examines this phenomenon by connecting delegation of responsibilities for ensuring data quality to research on the motivational aspects of controlling data, which lays the foundation for the empirical investigation.  This single case study was conducted qualitatively using semi-structured interviews. The data sample consisted of a business department, including six business controllers and their manager, at a large Swedish manufacturing company. Further, the data collection was complemented by conducting an interview with a representative at the IT department.  The study shows how business controllers are dependent on the quality of data, and due to their awareness of the benefits in avoiding data errors they are autonomously motivated to ensure good data quality. This strengthen the argument of delegating control of data quality to the business department, which gives the study practical significance.

The objective of this study was to investigate the composition of sympatric carnivores diet living in forest fragments of Atlantic forest interspersed with Pinus sp. e Eucalyptus sp.The study was conducted in the county of Vargem Bonita and Ponte Serrada, state of Santa Catarina. The information regarding diet were obtained through analysis of feces collected during the period July 2006 to July 2008. The first chapter discusses the composition of the diet of the coati Nasua Nasua, in a subsequent period of fruiting Merostachys skvortzovii, that due to massive seed production causes a higher population of small rodents phenomenon popularly known as ratada, the hypothesis that this event may have influenced the composition of the diet. As there were no data on the composition of the diet for the study area in the period before fruiting M. skvortzovii, the hypothesis was tested based on other studies on the feeding ecology of the species in an Atlantic forest. The results indicate that mammals are the most important (62.1% ii PO) and more frequent items (FO = 100%). The Cricetidae family stood out based on frequency of occurrence (FO = 95.1%) and percentage of occurrence (PO = 59.0%) and Lutreolina crassicaudata based on biomass consumed (PB = 52.2%). In 39.0% of samples were found plant material, but is category was composed exclusively of foliar blades of grass. The observed results show that the fruiting of M. skvortzovii, may have influenced the diet given that the consumption of mammals differs from that recorded for the species in previous studies in the area Atlantic forest. The second chapter of this study evaluated qualitatively and quantitatively the composition of the diet, the width and dietary overlap of five species of felines and they: Leopardus tigrinus, L. wiedii, L. pardalis, Herpailurus yagouaroundi and Puma concolor. For this 460 fecal samples were analyzed and it was found that mammals are the most important items in the diet of cats with emphasis on family Cricetidade which occurred in 386 samples was expected especially for species with smaller. Overall, the results indicate high overlap values for the pairs L. tigrinus -L. pardalis and L. tigrinus -H. yagouaroundi. Despite high overlap valuesobserved during the sampling period we cannot say that competition for resources, species may occupy similar niches, but not identical to exploit food resources in different proportions over time. Furthermore, the abundance of rodents in this period may have allowed high dietary overlap, fact that can be investigated by analysis of the recent carnivorous diet of these, once not there previous study to the region investigated.

Nesti, Mark Stephen. "Anxiety and sport : time to ask what rather than why." Thesis, University of Hull, 1999. http://hydra.hull.ac.uk/resources/hull:8055.

Full text
Abstract:
Approaches to the study of anxiety in sport have tended to rely on the use of questionnaires to assess levels of competitive anxiety. The development of the Competitive State Anxiety Inventory-2 (Martens et aI., 1982) has according to Jones (1995) led to considerable research investigating the relationship between anxiety and sport performance. Study 1 reported here utilised the CSAI-2 with an additional directional scale to examine individual differences and competitive state anxiety in sport. Results revealed that there were no significant differences (p<.05) between three achievement levels of competitive swimmers (n=89) for intensity scores, however, significant differences were found for cognitive anxiety and somatic anxiety directional scores across levels. Further, unexpected correlations between CSAI-2 intensity and directional scores for several items, highlighted the importance of considering individual differences in the interpretation of anxiety symptoms. Study 2 was based on Davidson and Schwartz's (1976) Matching Hypothesis which claims that interventions, to be effective, must be matched to the individual's dominant mode of experiencing anxiety. Female high level skaters (n=15) were assigned to a control group (n=5), a cognitive anxiety group or a somatic anxiety group based on interview data, CSAI-2 scores, coach reports, and performance at a simulated competitive event. Results revealed that there was no support for the Matching Hypothesis, and that greater attention should be devoted to using methods that allow for a more individualised approach to understanding anxiety in sport. A diary-based methodology incorporating Watson and Tellegen' s (1985) concept of mood, was employed in study 3 with high level Netballers (n=8) and Super League Rugby League Referees (n=8), to examine the relationships between anxiety, mood and sport and other life events for a 4 week period. Results suggested that this methodology can be used to allow data to be analysed ideographically and from an inter-individual basis as well, and helps to place sport anxiety into a broader context in relation to other mood states and life events. Finally, study 4 further developed the use of the diary based methodology by investigating the relationship between mood, anxiety and performance in International Student Rugby players (n=Il). Whilst no clear relationship was found between anxiety, mood states and match performance scores, several interesting findings revealed that much more could be achieved by re-directing focus at what anxiety means to an individual both before and after sport performance. The findings from the diary-based studies are discussed in terms of the need to address the meaning of anxiety in sport, in part, by drawing on the approach taken within existential-phenomenological psychology.

Abstract:
Applications and extensions to the Rathie-Swamee models are presented in this work. Proposed by Rathie and Swamee (2006), the Rathie-Swamee models were developed as a generalization to the logistic distribution. These models have great flexibility, assuming unimodal and multimodal shapes, and have some of its applications exemplified with bimodal data of shrimp fishing and geyser eruptions. By the use of simulations, the performance of different methods to obtain confidence intervals are compared. The extensions presented for the Rathie-Swamee models refer to the inclusion of covariates, creating regression models. These new regression models are fitted to fishing and eruption data, to exemplify some applications of the models. A new probability distribution is presented as the resulting distribution of quotients and products between independent random variables with Rathie-Swamee distributions. For this new distribution are presented some simulation results along with a table of quantiles for some percentage points of interest.

Abstract:
“Rather than be Suffered to Perish:” James Oglethorpe, the Founding of Georgia, and Capitalism in the Early Modern British Atlantic This paper examines the foundation of the Georgia colony through the lens of early capitalism. It argues that Georgia was founded both as a response to the expansion of capitalism in the British Atlantic, as well as a possible solution to the societal ills caused by said expansion. This paper argues that James Oglethorpe both feared the deleterious effects of capitalism, yet he still recognized the need to foster the legitimacy of the Financial Revolution on which the legitimacy of the British government post-Glorious Revolution rested. As a colony intended for debtors, but focused on relieving the suffering of those who lost their wealth due to the vicissitudes of the market, Georgia’s founding represented a move by the state to assume the responsibility of secular welfare administration. At the same time, it represented an understanding of the dangers of capitalism’s growth. Courage & Cowardice, Virtue & Vice: The Gendered Language of Revolution in Philadelphia, 1793-1800 This paper reveals how the discourse on the French Revolution in the United States was gendered to reinforce traditional roles for men and women. It argues that both supporters and opponents of the French Revolution used gendered language to advocate for traditional gender roles despite their vast political differences. Taken in the context of the early United States, where revolution at home and abroad opened up the possibility of reimagining all aspects of society, Americans debated the French Revolution to finalize their own social questions. Men on both sides of the debate cast their opponents as effeminate and charged them with perceived negative feminine traits. At the same time, they cast themselves as manly and possessing perceived positive masculine attributes. In so doing, both supporters and opponents of the French Revolution used that event to advocate for an exclusively male political environment, in contrast to the expansion of women’s political potential in Europe.

Full text
Abstract:
As an Irish farm boy turned educated poet, Seamus Heaney navigates a liminal space between the world of agriculture and the world of letters. Many of his poems draw upon his rural childhood experiences, infusing them with firsthand accounts of life on an Irish farm. As a result, most scholars label Heaney's poetry as antipastoral, noting its failure to provide the idyllic look at the countryside that is characteristic of traditional pastorals. However, reconsiderations of the pastoral mode reveal a unique aspect to Heaney's poems that is derived from his liminal existence as both a rural Irishman and as an educated writer. This thesis aims to analyze Heaney's particular version of the mode, noticing not only specific characteristics of his pastoral but also charting his development as a pastoral poet throughout his career. Through close readings of select poems contextualized by events in Heaney's life, I demonstrate not only why Heaney should be considered a pastoral poet but also how he transforms the pastoral mode.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigates the possibility of improving World Wide Web (WWW) proxy cache performance. Most published research on proxy caches is concerned only with improving the cache hit rate. Improving only the hit rate, however, ignores the actual retrieval times experienced by WWW browser users. This research investigates removal algorithms that consider the time to download a file as a factor. Our experiments show that a removal algorithm that minimizes only the download time yields poor results. However, a new algorithm is investigated that does provide improved performance over common removal algorithms using three factors --- the speed at which a file is downloaded, the size of the file, and the number of references to the file (the number of hits). Experiments are conducted with a modified version of the Harvest Cache which has been made available on the Internet from the Virginia Tech Network Research Group's (VT-NRG) home page. WWW traffic from the ".edu" domain is used in all of the experiments. Five different removal algorithms are compared: least recently used, least frequently used, document size, and two new algorithms. The results indicate that the new three factor algorithm reduces the average latency experienced by users.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Australia is regarded as a healthy nation, with life expectancy one of the highest in the world. Yet the latest National Health Survey tells a very different story. Almost 50% of Australians are now living with one or more chronic conditions, with arthritis and other musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions representing the most expensive chronic disease group in Australia. As the leading cause of chronic pain and second most common cause of disability and early retirement due to ill health in Australia, Arthritis is costing the economy over $7 billion a year, in addition to over $1.1 billion in extra welfare costs and lost tax revenue. Although personal, social and economic burdens of arthritis are immense they tend to be poorly recognised, with government investment considerably lower than for any other major disease group, with the exception of asthma. While very common, arthritis is not well understood. Prevailing myths inaccurately portray arthritis as an old person's disease and an inevitable part of aging. More than 150 types of arthritis and related MSK conditions have been described; classified as either inflammatory, or non-inflammatory. Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common type of non-inflammatory, characterised by progressive damage to cartilage and other joint tissues. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is the prototypical inflammatory arthritis, followed by gout, psoriatic arthritis (PsA), ankylosing spondylitis (AS), juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) and systemic lupus erythematosus (lupus), among others. Classified as chronic autoimmune disorders, the symptoms of inflammatory arthritis (IA) are not localised to the damaged joint, and individuals may also experience fever, weakness, and organ damage, in addition to the stiffness and pain in the joints. As the sample size of this pilot study is small, it was decided to not recruit from the entire target population but rather to focus on those individuals living with IA. The measure of prevalence of arthritis and other MSK conditions in Australia poses a challenge as there are wide variations in condition specific data. A snapshot from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) and the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) indicates almost 4 million Australians, 1 in 6 people, live with some form of arthritis – this number has almost doubled since the 1950’s and is expected to significantly increase by 2030. Limited national statistics and publications show an estimated 456,000 Australians (1.9% of the total population) with RA; JIA as affecting around 1 child in every 1,000 aged 0–15; PsA occurring in up to 30% of people who have psoriasis, a common skin disorder that affects approximately 2% of the population; and suggest AS affects one in 200 Australians. The limited data relating to incidence, treatment, costs and outcomes of the many types of arthritis is seen as a major barrier to recognition of the impact and potential severity of the disease group by the general public, clinicians and policymakers. statistics and publications show an estimated 456,000 Australians (1.9% of the total population) with RA; JIA as affecting around 1 child in every 1,000 aged 0–15; PsA occurring in up to 30% of people who have psoriasis, a common skin disorder that affects approximately 2% of the population; and suggest AS affects one in 200 Australians. The limited data relating to incidence, treatment, costs and outcomes of the many types of arthritis is seen as a major barrier to recognition of the impact and potential severity of the disease group by the general public, clinicians and policymakers. The study investigated whether individuals living with various forms of IA could improve levels of self-management by participating in a drumming intervention based on the Holyoake DRUMBEAT (Discovering Relationships Using Music -Beliefs, Emotions, Attitudes, & Thoughts) format, that uses hand drumming to allow participants to explore and engage connections between making music together as a group and development of emotional skills, such as self-regulation and self-confidence. The initial aim of the study was to help understand the unique experiences of those individuals living with IA, as expressed by research participants in this study. The subsequent and overarching aims of the research were to investigate what benefits persons living with IA might derive through their participation in innovative and novel hand-drumming programs such as DRUMBEAT. Seven participants with varied forms of IA were invited to take part in a 6-week hand-drumming intervention based on the Holyoake DRUMBEAT program. The 2.5hour weekly sessions were held in 2019 at the headquarters of AOWA. Each session consisted of playing djembe drums and/or percussion, and discussions to facilitate effective interaction between participants. Additionally, the inclusion of breaks before, after and during the sessions was an important consideration to encourage social interaction with others possibly facing similar challenges in life. Ad hoc adaptations led to change in peripheral delivery components of the program so as to suit the participants’ abilities, rather than their disabilities. Modification was about flexibility and this is inherent in the way the sessions were delivered. The core content of the program remained the same. Exclusion criteria included presence of a major depressive disorder, or a previously diagnosed depressive disorder that had not been stabilised through treatment; or presence of any co-existing musculoskeletal conditions that prevented participation. A sequential mixed-methods action research design was adopted for this exploratory health promotion intervention. The integration of mixed methods and action research allowed for various research tools to be used: researcher observations; weekly transcripts; one-on-one interviews; final focus group transcripts; and pre, interim, and post – program questionnaires. Depression, anxiety and quality of life (QoL) were assessed using the RAND 36-Item Health Survey 1.0 and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression scale (HADS). In analysing the results, each participant’s general self-efficacy was assessed using the Rheumatoid Arthritis Self-Efficacy (RASE) questionnaire and the Locus of Control of Behaviour Scale (LoCBS). The UCLA Loneliness Scale (Version 3) was utilised to measure loneliness and social support, together with a simple, four-item Session Rating Scale (SRS) administered, scored and discussed at the end of each session, to get real-time feedback from participants. The Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) was also completed at the end of each session to help capture any differences in pain intensity and / or severity, pre- and post-drumming. Quantitative results show depression was significantly lower from baseline to follow up. Depression had decreased from a mean (Median; SD; IQR) of 6.29 (7.0; 3.15; 5.0) to 4.42 (5.0; 2.82; 5.0) during the 6-week intervention. Anxiety reduced from a mean (Median; SD; IQR) of 7.86 (7.0; 4.98; 10.0) to 7.14 (7.0; 4.91; 9.0). Statistically significant improvements in QoL scores were observed in physical functioning from a mean (Median; SD; IQR) of 55 (65; 20.41; 30) to 65 (75; 18.26; 25). Trends in improvement in role physical / role emotional scale was noted, together with reduced bodily pain. There were smaller non-significant improvements in energy / fatigue, emotional wellbeing and general health. All QoL measures appeared to improve, though all but physical did not reach statistical significance due to small sample size and inadequate exposure to the intervention for some participants. The study encountered poor participation rates, with fatigue and lack of confidence identified as the main reasons for non-attendance. Only 28.57% (n=2) of the participants completed the full 6-week DRUMBEAT program, with 57.14% (n=4) completing four, or more sessions. Social function and differences in loneliness, as measured by UCLA scale (version 3) were the only scales to remain unchanged. The degree of change was also not significant in self‐report measures of locus of control. The majority of participants (n=6) indicated small non-significant improvements in self-efficacy. Qualitative analysis revealed a significant sense of community and by week two there was a noticeable sense of bonding within the group. In addition to community features the qualitative analysis revealed some positive signs of improvement in multiple domains of social-emotional behaviour. We conclude that the drumming intervention may have a beneficial effect on both mental and physical self-reported health, in the short term, in an IA population. These findings add to the growing evidence on how engagement in a group drumming intervention, such as DRUMBEAT may influence participants to utilise experiences drawn from their own lives to find solutions to challenges, and promote healthy behaviour changes. To support these results, further studies are needed to measure outcomes and the potential usefulness of incorporating DRUMBEAT into a successful management strategy of IA. This will allow for the opportunity to produce more evidence and determine the effects of outside factors. While appreciating the role of medications to alleviate symptoms, clearly the current approach to the management of chronic conditions, such as IA, is not working and therein presents an opportunity for innovative interventions such as DRUMBEAT. Based upon the findings and recommendations of this study, DRUMBEAT appears to be an easily accessible, fun, sustainable program that may help participants gain the social support and skills necessary for them to thrive, learn, work, earn and participate in community life.

Full text
Abstract:
The normalization of drug consumption has become a sociocultural phenomenon in the last twenty years in Western European countries. This normalization encompasses both the historic process and the present drug consumption scene. After the heroin crises of the eighties the pattern of drug consumption changed. The consumption of ecstasy, cocaine and cannabis spread among the young at parties, where consumption only played a secondary role in people’s lives. The new pattern of consumption moved away from the underground world of heroin and meant less problematic consequences. Over the last twenty years drug consumption has stopped causing alarm and an established cultural acceptance has come about. This means that for people involved in the world of drug consumption, taking drugs at a specific time and in a certain context is a functional act, which is accepted and does not bring about rejection. The present situation is a product of the process of normalization. The vast majority of consumption is compatible with having responsibilities as it causes few problems and the consumers are able to remain socially integrated. As a result, normalization is more and more accentuated and this happens even more so as a higher and higher number of the adult population, for generational reasons, has had satisfactory contact with drugs. As a result of the process of normalization, ideas about normalization have appeared. These delimit acceptable and normal consumption as well as that which is potentially problematic. Each individual consumer carries out a subjective interpretation of the idea of normalization in order to consume but avoid undesirable harm. This interpretation has been called the concept of regulation. The acceptance or rejection of consumption is a result of the idea of regulation, which continually evaluates consumption for pleasure. In order to consider consumption to be normal, the concept of regulation evaluates the context, time, frequency and the consequences it causes. The inter-connection of the factors must be compatible with the consumer’s responsibilities if consumption is to be kept within the limits of normality. If consumers practise problematic consumption, they will be labelled as problematic and they will have to modify their consumption to keep within normality. In the framework of the consumer society, apart from the concept of regulation, the desire to keep institutionalized helps the vast majority of consumers to avoid developing problems. The whole process of the normalization of drug consumption continues to be stigmatized in different formal contexts (workplace, family…) and this is why consumers have to know how to handle this. When faced with interaction, the vast majority choose to compromise, which means that they prefer to hide their consumption to avoid negative consequences, even though they consider the stigmatization to be out of proportion. Others put themselves in the situation of auto-stigmatization because while they themselves are consumers, they also consider drug consumption to be negative. And the last ones, the “transformers”, maintain a political commitment aimed at de-stigmatizing the consumers, considering that consumption forms part of society and the fact of consuming should not be hidden. They present themselves in society as consumers in spite of the possible stigmatization they might suffer. These are the ones who work towards the normalization of drug consumption. In the present scene of drug consumption, policies related to drugs continue with the prohibitive model. In spite of the introduction of risk and harm reduction as an effective practice to tackle consumption, moves towards the normalization of consumption continue to be only a minority. Therefore, in view of the present position of the normalization of consumption and the normality of consumers, a revision of drug policy has become necessary.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to map out and analyse the competitiveness of the clothing-manufacturing sector in Rwanda on a local, regional and international level. The research was carried out as a case study of the Rwandan clothing-manufacturing sector through a two-months field study in Rwanda. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with local fashion designers, clothing manufacturers and ministry representatives. Observations in manufacturing plants, local markets and tailoring studios were also carried out. The findings were analyzed through an analysis model based on Porter’s diamond model, enhanced with the notions of country of origin effect (COO), corporate social responsibility (CSR) and customer-based brand equity (CBBE). The findings show a sector that is struggling with its competitiveness on a local, regional and international level. Lack of relevant factor conditions such as cheap labour and energy as well as low local demand indicates that the country is not suitable for mass-production of clothes. The emerging fashion scene shows abundance in creativity and entrepreneurship, but there is a need for more developed tailoring skills, product quality level and knowledge in management and marketing. Rwanda is not competitive for mass-production of clothing, but the sector could profile itself on high-end fashion and products with craftsmanship qualities. Allocating resources to education and investments in supporting industries could help the Rwandan clothing-manufacturing sector to profile itself on a regional and international market. No studies on the Rwandan clothing-manufacturing sector and its competitiveness have been done since 1989. Due to the shifting focus towards East-Africa as a textile and clothing-manufacturing hub, an update of the situation in Rwanda was found relevant. The study contributes to the existing literature on competitiveness in the textile industry and forms a relevant stepping-stone for further research.

Abstract:
It will be argued here that in the Unonia International School many students' language repertoires are central to their lives in ways that differ from those in national schools, and that these students can benefit from an enrichment of their language repertoires. I trace the issues involved which have led to a situation where there is a preponderance of monolingual input to the programmes and curriculum provided in such schools, and a failure to acknowledge bilingualism as an autonomous discipline, a case argued in the text. An assimilationist pedagogical ideology towards English at the UIS is considered inappropriate for international school students, who are seen as living in an 'international space' where English-as-an-International-Language is but one part of their language repertoires, their mother-tongue(s) maintaining a prominent position in their identities as regards sociocultural, cognitive and academic formation. This study is a natural development of my Institution Focused Study, which investigated students' views of their languages. The data collected for the present study consists of discussions with parents, teachers and administrators at the Unonia International School, and is analysed to ask how these constituent groups perceive, understand and value the effectiveness of the mother-tongue programme at the school. Sociological developments in the world at large, namely 'the new capitalism,' will also be introduced as possible explanations for ways in which more satisfactory outcomes for students are not achieved. The impact and influence of the curriculum model of the International Baccalaureate on the language choices of students, of the body responsible for accreditation, the Council of International Schools, and of the body which supports subject committees, the European Council of International Schools will be investigated and recommendations suggested which may be more positive for developing satisfactory trajectories for international students. The aim of this study is thus to investigate the views of the UIS community involved with the mother-tongue programme.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Since the first flights in Sydney in 1910, the problem of exactly where to locate Sydney's airport has preoccupied and troubled planners, politicians and residents of the city. This thesis examines Sydney airport as a space, site and symbol under contestation by major social forces - Zukin - throughout the twentieth century. In doing so, it seeks to question the claims of both planners and anti-airport protestors to resolve and manage large-scale urban developments. Via a series of case studies of representations of the airport, the thesis develops an argument for understanding the airport as a heterotopia: neither sublime nor abject, but through such an extremist spatial imaginary pointing to the production of modernist space as a highly contested process. Because it localises and materialises discourses on the nature and goals of progress, internationalisation and globalisation, it is argued that the built form of the airport is, and will continue to be, a key site of such aerial modernity. The final chapter closely reads a series of airport tales- (a film, a play and a park) in order to consider the ways in which they rework the modernist sublime in domestic space. It is concluded that these stories offer a method of representing locality that goes beyond the existing understandings of locality as an essence of place. The appeal of the narratives lies in the shift that they develop, through excessive and negotiated representations of both the domestic and the sublime, from the local as essence, to locality as practice.

Bellman, Suzanne Beth. "I would rather be happy than right: Consumer impulsivity, risky decision making, and accountability." Diss., University of Iowa, 2012. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/2821.

Full text
Abstract:
Consumer impulsivity accounts for a large percentage of purchases yet this aspect of personality is measured with a variety of instruments. Three studies were conducted to examine how measures of consumer impulsiveness relate to each other, other measures of trait level impulsivity, and a variety of decisions and judgments. These studies looked at the relationship between biases resulting from motivated reasoning and the trait of impulsiveness. Motivated reasoning and impulsiveness was considered within the context of consumer and other choice decisions. Consumer impulsivity was found to be related to both general measures of trait level impulsivity as well as containing a lot of content overlap among the three measures considered here. One measure was distinct and formed its own factor in a factor analysis suggesting it may be the most specific measure of consumer impulsivity. The other measures of consumer impulsivity overlapped quite a bit with general impulsivity. The Iowa Gambling Task was used to measure both choice behavior and anticipatory SCR, however no significant results were found. The cups task, a risky decision making task, was also administered and results mirrored classic findings such that participants were more risk averse in the domain of gains than losses. Additionally, both expected value and outcome magnitude influenced results. Individuals who scored higher on the UPPS urgency subscale made more risk advantageous choices when looking at sensitivity to expected value. The third task assessed differences in purchase time for hedonic and utilitarian items. Impulsive consumers reported they would purchase both hedonic and utilitarian items sooner than their less impulsive counterparts.

Abstract:
Radiotherapy is one of the indicated treatments against cancer. In women, exposure to ionising radiation (IR) can induce a failure in the ovarian function. Therefore, there is a need for an exhaustive analysis of the X-ray effects in the female gonads and to search for a radio protector agent, so as to decrease these secondary effects.
This Ph.D. thesis attempts to infer conclusions from fundamental research and to apply this in a clinical capacity. Its four prime objectives are focused on the existence of effects of IR (X rays), of chemical mutagens (aphidicolin) and of possible radio protectors (triptorelin); and the determination of unstable genomic regions in the species Rattus norvegicus.
The basis of this study was the germinal line of female rats. However, the objects of analysis were the somatic cells (foetal fibroblasts) originating from the oocytes I of adult females from different treatment groups. In this way, transgenerational radiation-induced chromosomal instability (RICI) was studied with different cytogenetical parameters. At the same time, a reproductive study was performed directly on the treated females.
The existence of transgenerational RICI was demonstrated. Effects of the IR exposure of oocytes I from adult female rats are transmitted to their offspring. This RICI is present in acute and fractioned dosage administration, with similar results. Relating to the reproductive study, no radiation effect was seen with our parameters.
Foetal fibroblasts of R. norvegicus present spontaneous chromosomal instability. It is observed with both the quantitative and qualitative parameters and it is maintained in all the experiments performed.
Chemical mutagen aphidicolin administration to the foetal rat fibroblasts cultures causes cytogenetical damage. These direct effects are clearly superior when the chemical mutagen is applied to cells with transgenerational RICI, which indicates that RICI enhances its effects.
The GnRH hormone agonist studied, triptorelin, confers radioprotection to the oocytes I from the primordial follicles of adult irradiated females. The degree of radioprotection of this drug depends on the analysed parameter, and on the dose and type of administration of ionising radiation. Relating to cytogenetical parameters, radioprotection of this analogue is much more pronounced at an acute dose (up to 44%). If we relate our results to the human species, they would indicate that prepubertal ovaries and those from adult patients treated with this GnRH agonist are more radioresistant than those from non-treated adult patients. This would confirm former histological and clinical studies.
Triptorelin also affords protection from spontaneous chromosomal instability that would be translated into an improved gonadal function. This effect is evident relating to the cytogenetical parameters and it is observed as a tendency with respect to the reproductive conditions of the females.
Concerning to the study of unstable regions, seventeen interstitial telomeric-like sequences, classified as frequent and very frequent, and seven aphidicolin-induced fragile sites in rat foetal fibroblasts were detected. Both types of sequences are involved in evolutive processes and in chromosomal instability events of this species.
To finish, it was determined that chromosomal bands in rats do not break at random. There are chromosomal regions more unstable than others, as they suffer more chromosomal aberrations than others. The more unstable zones of the rat karyotype are located in chromosomes RNO1, RNO2 and RNO3, taking into account the transgenerational effects of IR, the effects of a chemical mutagen, the spontaneous chromosomal instability, fragile sites and interstitial telomeric-like sequences. Furthermore the more unstable chromosomal bands of this species are RNO1q22, RNO1q43, RNO2q32 and RNO3p12.

Abstract:
Saquinavir and ritonavir belong to the protease inhibitors family, being currently used in combination in the management of AIDS. Saquinavir is characterized by a low and variable oral bioavailability which can be increased by the addition of ritonavir. Although the interaction between these drugs has already been reported in previous studies, to date, there is still lack of information regarding the roles of liver and intestine in their first pass metabolism. Thus, the aim of this study was to assess the pharmacokinetic profile for these drugs and their interaction, determining the participation of the metabolic organs. To achieve this aim, assays in rats subjected to the jugular vein cannulation were performed, administering different doses of the drugs by IV, IP and oral routes. The amount of drug in plasma samples was quantified by HPLC/UV technique. The population approach by means of NONMEM showed as main conclusions that the intestine plays the most important role in saquinavir first pass metabolism. In addition, it showed the interaction between these two drugs at the hepatic and intestinal biotransformation level, so that ritonavir inhibits saquinavir metabolism. As well as a displacement of ritonavir plasma protein binding produced when saquinavir is coadministered.

Abstract:
Set within the framework of the newly established field of variational pragmatics (Schneider and Barron, 2008), this study investigates pragmatic variation between two different regional varieties of English, namely American English and Singaporean English. Specifically, the speech act of compliment responses is compared. The data were collected through written discourse completion tasks (DCT) and responses were analysed and coded using an adapted version of Holmes’ (1988) categorization system for compliment responses (CRs). The CRs come from a total of 40 participants and a total of 320 compliment responses were analysed. The DCT was supplemented by an introspective-recall with six participants. The findings demonstrate that the preferred strategy for both groups is in the order of accept, evade and reject. Even so, the Singaporeans use more reject strategies and less accept strategies than the Americans do. Further, the Americans employ more combination strategies than the Singaporeans. The Singaporeans however, employ more non-verbal and paralinguistic cues than the Americans. The results also show differences in the two varieties’ attitudes to and perceptions of compliment responses. In addition, the study suggests that compliments in Singapore might be undergoing a change. The findings are particularly important for pedagogical purposes.
